"The National Uranium Tailings Program was established in 1982 to develop, in part, a mathematical predictive model which would allow the assessment of the impact of uranium mill tailings on the environment and particularly on humans. . To achieve this , various studies were undertaken to establish the role played by key constituents of the tailings. This paper summarizes the findings of a study carried out under that program, to examine the leachability of barium-radium sulphate sludges produced in the treatment of uranium mill tailings decants. The investigators performed detailed chemical an alysis of the sludge, applied geochemical computer models to investigate sludge leaching behaviour, and conducted experiments to assess the impact of bacteria on leaching. The modelling showed that the redox state o f the sludge-leachant system was the most important factor. Substantial bacterially-mediated dissolutio n of the sludge and release of radium was demonstrated experimentally under suitable reducing conditions . INTRODUCTIONIn September 1981, Phillip A. Lapp presented the final report of the National Technical Planning Group on uranium tailings research to the federal government (Lapp, 1981). Lapp' s group had performed an in-depth survey of the status of uranium tailings research in Canada and, as a result, recommended that a national program be funded in the amount of $18 .6 million. Half of this fund ing was to come from the federal government, with the two producing provinces , Ontario and Saskatchewan, providing the balance. However , the provinces declined to support the program and the federal government decided to inaugurate a reduced program with $8.5 million o f funds .In late 1982, the formation of the National Uranium Tailings Program (NUTP) was announced by the minister of state for mines. A primary objective of this program was to develop a mathematical predictive model that would permit the assessment of the impact of uranium mill tailings on the environment, a nd particularly on humans. The program was to use existing information to the greatest possible extent, and then fund research to fill in gaps or substantiate data where necessary .The NUTP was established to administer this program of contract research over a five-year sunset life. By the end of the 1986-87 fiscal year the NUTP had completed about 100 contracts. One of those projects was to study the effect of placing barium-radium sludge ba ck within the tailings matrix. Th is paper gives the results of that study."

In this study, flotation of fine galena, chalcopyrite and pyrite was performed after grinding with different extent of oxidation-reduction condition adjusted by grinding media. Sodium dithionite and iron ions were added in mill to simulate pulp potentials and iron oxidation species produced by grinding media, respectively. The types and quantities of the metal oxidation species on mineral surfaces were determined by EDTA extractions, while the surface electrical properties of minerals and interaction of different types of metal oxidation species were studied by zeta potential measurements. It was found that the nature and concentration of the absorbed metal oxidation species were dependent on oxidation atmosphere controlled by the iron amount of grinding media. These species interacted with each other and had an important role in determining flotation of fine galena and chalcopyrite as well as activation of fine pyrite by lead and copper.

The extraction and concentration of nickel from aqueous solutions by emulsion liquid membranes (ELMs) using tributylphosphate (TBP) as extractant has been investigated in this research. The emulsion liquid membrane consists of a diluent (kerosene), a surfactant (Span 80), a mobile carrier (TBP), and a stripping solution (ammonia solutions). Important factors influencing the separation process including membrane composition, feed composition, and mixing speed have been examined. The results show that more than 90% of nickel in the feed solution could be extracted by ELMs under the experimental conditions, indicating the feasibility to use the designated ELMs to detoxify nickel-containing industrial waste solutions.

The SLon Vertical Ring and Pulsating High Gradient Magnetic Separator was developed to overcome multiple disadvantages associated with traditional horizontal type Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separators (WHIMS) which have been in service for many decades for recovering iron ore and other minerals. Proven successful, with hundreds of units now upgrading low-grade iron ores and maximizing recovery of fines throughout China, the technology is now being tested in the Western world. This paper will discuss the drawbacks of traditional WHIMS, explain the operation of the SLon, and illustrate its practical use in processing hematite ores.

Superconductivity is one of the most remarkable scientific phenomena ever investigated. It is the phenomenon whereby some materials exhibit zero resistance to the passage of an electric current when cooled to low temperatures, and requires a quantum mechanical explanation. Four Nobel prizes in physics have been awarded specifically on the subject of superconductivity, with many more enabled by superconducting technology. For example, particle beams are generated in accelerators and manipulated in ?particle beam lines? in the ?Big Physics? projects around the world eg. at CERN, Geneva, leading to major discoveries in fundamental particle physics. Similarly, at the JET Propulsion laboratory near Oxford, U.K, controlled nuclear fusion has been demonstrated, and magnetic containment of plasmas is key. In the chemical and biological sciences high field NMR spectroscopy has become indispensable for examining organic matter, revealing the mysteries of the workings of cells, genetics, and in the development of new polymers and pharmaceuticals. With all these very advanced uses for superconducting magnets, it is easy to forget that superconductivity is big business, not just a scientific curiosity. MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) superconducting magnets, the key component of high resolution body scanners, use approximately half of the world?s superconducting wire ? the other half being mostly used in accelerator magnets. The MRI market is about 3 billion dollars per annum, and one MRI magnet uses 200km of wire. New applications for superconducting magnets are now appearing including ?Catheter steering?, enabling much shorter timescales for life-saving brain tumour removals and ?Functional MRI?, a whole new area in patient diagnostics. Whilst the use of low temperature superconductors (LTS) is now well established commercially in superconducting magnets and niche electronic applications, the application of LTS in electric power distribution and transport has been very limited to date. It is now more than fifteen years since the so-called High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) materials were discovered: these can be operated at liquid nitrogen temperatures rather than liquid helium temperatures. However, materials processing and scale-up issues have prevented their widespread use, and in particular the required price/performance criteria are only beginning to be reached except in certain niche markets. BSCCO (Bismuth Strontium Calcium Copper Oxide) tapes up to one km long are now readily available, and have been demonstrated in high current cables for power distribution networks, but the general consensus is that 1) it is difficult to reduce the price much further because of the silver matrix required and 2) in applications where coils are required eg. motors, generators, transformers etc the properties of BSCCO are rather poor because of the critical current dependence on magnetic field. Magnetic fields are always associated with coils and windings, and such fields are of course fundamental to the operation of all electrical machines. YBCO (Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide) however, has good characteristics in field and for the last few years there has been intensive research and development costing several tens of millions of dollars worldwide into the scale-up of production of so-called ?coated conductor?. This ?second generation? tape can be produced by any of many different film deposition techniques, with more or less success for short lengths, but as yet it is unavailable in lengths more than a few tens of metres.

In 1988, Eldorado merged with Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (SMDC) to form Cameco-A Canadian Mining &. Energy Corporation. The new corporation is one of the world 's largest uranium companies.Cameco's $1.5 billion in assets include the Rabbit Lake uranium mine (Cameco 100010); the Key Lake uranium mine (Cameco 66.67%; Uranerz Exploration and Mining Limited 33.33%); the Cluff Lake uranium mine (Cameco 20%; Amok Ltd. 80%); the Fuel Services Division at Blind River and Port Hope, Ontario (Cameco 100%); and a 100%); and a 48.75% interest in the Cigar Lake uranium deposit which is now at the test mining stage (Cogema Canada Ltd . 32.625% ; Idemitsu Uranium Exploration Canada Limited 12.875%; Corono Grande 3.75%; Korea Electric Power Corporation 2%). "Surface crown pillars are important Canadian,mining structures. Mines operating in the Canadian Shield usually have several, forming a first line of protection from surface elements.Detailed technical information from twenty-four Canadian hard rock mines show that the deposits dip steeply and are generally either single or multiple veins. Considerable overburden usually cap the deposits. The rock mass is often altered and intersected by important discontinuities.The designs for these types of pillars lack basic data and are based on experience rather than a scientific approach. Regardless of the competence of the rock mass, the surface crown-pillar thickness to width ratios (an unscientific design tool used by the industry) are usually less than five. Rock bolting is, in almost every case, used as a support measure. However, there are many openings neither backfilled nor monitored.The characteristics of openings with surface crown pillars are also examined."

When applying numerical techniques to problems of deformation of rocks, the body to be analyzed is divided into small portions and is represented by a system of points linked together with the neighboring points. In the so-called distinct element modeling, the particles in the system are directly connected by springs and a contact law is used to specify forces on the particles to simulate the mechanical behavior of the body. The relation between the spring stiffness and commonly measured material properties, such as the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, should be known a priori. For the general case of a random packing of particles, the relation is found by means of a process in which a system of particles and set of parameters are prepared to simulate a set of specimen-size test and then the input parameters are chosen to match the measured material properties. The validity of the numerical result is only demonstrated by comparison model behaviors with the measured responses. The process includes trial-and-error manner, therefore, no model is complete to reproduce the mechanical properties. In this paper, a relation between the spring stiffness and the elastic constants; the Young’s modulus and the Poisson’s ratio, is introduced to a three-dimensional distinct lattice spring method. Two simple numerical examples will be presented to demonstrate the performance of the method with the procedure for the determination of the spring stiffness.

"An alternative to building new copper smelters, because of either stringent environmental regulations or in order to expand current plant capacity, could be achieved through the retrofitting of old reverberatory furnaces by making use of tonnage oxygen. The CONTOP® technology offers unique advantages over other techniques for this purpose, especially regarding substantial reduction in bath, capital and operating costs. This is possible to achieve since the reverb throughput could be largely increased with no major structural modifications to the furnace.The following options are offered to the smelter operators: dirty concentrates can be treated in an adjacent Contop system, or the cyclones can be mounted on the reverb roof for either dual operation or full Contop operation. ln the tatter case the furnace will be used as a settling chamber and f or slag c1eaning by top blowing with reducing gases.By incorporating Contop technology, the furnace throughput can be increased, higher malle grade, fixation of sulphur from furnace off-gas and substantial savings in energy consumption are possible to attain.IntroductionCopper smelting has been revolutionized during the last quarter century to such an extent that the standard type of plants consisting o f roasters and reverb furnaces seem a thing of the past, or almost. Condition-based maintenance is replacing preventive maintenance in many industrial operations as a result of gains in productivity. Preventive maintenance is strictly time-based which means that as long as the prescribed time is sufficiently short, failures are prevented. The trade-offs between shorter cycles and increased downtime is a fine balancing act. Condition-based maintenance is gaining momentum as the more cost-effective and green solution to finding the optimal maintenance cycle and improving overall productivity. In the mining industry, various parameters of heavy equipment are monitored continuously to provide feedback for maintenance events. However, strain, shock, and vibration, key factors which lead to yielding and fatigue of metal parts, are not generally monitored by built-in systems, mainly due to the complexity of sensor installation and computational intensity of data processing. Scanimetrics has developed a stand-alone, add-on wireless system for measuring strain, shock, and vibration in heavy equipment and components, the data from which can be directly used to trigger maintenance events. The present system is being deployed in tar sands mining equipment. The system consists of a portable display and control unit, a software platform consisting of data management, sensor instrumentation and data analysis, and wireless strain sensor units, which can be easily installed on equipment. Data from the sensors can be gathered throughout the mine site, processed instantly, and used to generate condition-based maintenance events, improving overall uptime of the equipment and overall productivity of the mining operation.

In this study, the behaviour of rock mass subjected to blasting load is investigated using three dimensional finite difference numerical modelling. In the analyses, Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion has been used for the characterisation of the rock mass strength. Stresses acting on the borehole boundary have been simulated by an exponential function which reaches its maximum within a short time and then falls to zero value in a considerable time period. The strain rate effect on the mechanical properties of rock material has also been taken into account in the analyses. Four different explosive-rock mass combinations have been studied to investigate blast induced damage zone. It has been observed that proposed equation for the dynamic compressive strength of rock material fits very well to general suggestions. Results have shown that blast damage analysis model recommended with this study is successful.

"Les Services TMG (Niobec) currently treat a niobium ore in the Chicoutimi area of Quebec. The mineral pyrochlore is present in a carbonatite deposit which assays 5% to 7% apatite.The ore is ground to minus 65 mesh and deslimed at 10 micrometres. Part of the carbonates are floated with a fatty acid emulsion and rejected to the tailings as a first step to ensure the proper conditions for the flotation of the pyrochlore concentrate. The carbonate concentrate is 65% minus 44 micrometres and is composed of dolomite, calcite, 22% apatite and a minor amount of silicates.A laboratory investigation was undertaken to determine the feasibility of extracting apatite from the carbonate concentrate. This led to the development of an economic flowsheet to produce high-grade apatite concentrate. The apatite is depressed with phosphoric acid, and the pH is adjusted at 4.8-5.0 with sulphuric acid. An additional amount of fatty acid is added to permit efficient flotation of the carbonates. 1n a second stage, the silicates left behind with the apatite concentrate can be removed by depressing the apatite with AIC3 while floating the silicates with a secondary amine.The results of the laboratory tests indicate the possibility of producing an apatite concentrate assaying 38.3% P2O5 (83.7% BPL) with a recovery of 66.2%. Pilot-plant tests undertaken at the concentrator yielded a concentrate of 34% P205 and recovery of 76%."

"Stillwater Mining Company (SMC), a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville Corporation, produces a copper-nickel, platinum-palladium flotation concentrate at its Nye, Montana mine. The concentrate is then toll processed in Europe. Recognizing the economic advantage of treating the concentrates at the mine site and of retaining this strategic resource in the United States, the Company commissioned Tolltreck International Limited and International Process Research Corporation to conduct pilot scale smelting tests with a flowsheet that would maximize metal recoveries while satisfying the environmental requirements of operations at Stillwater.Primary smelting was conducted in a single phase, 50 k W, submerged-arc, electric furnace. Refining the product mattes to copper-nickel ""white-metal""; containing approximately 2% iron, was accomplished in a Tolltreck, IV-litre, top blown rotary converter. Over-all platinum and palladium recoveries were approximately 99%; copper and nickel recoveries averaged 94%. INTRODUCTION(l-4)Stillwater Mining Company (SMC) a partnership of Chevron Resources and Manville, operates a copper-nickel, platinum palladium mine and concentrator at Nye, Montana, located in the valley of the Stillwater River, approximately, 100 km southwest of Billings. It is North America's only primary producer of these precious metals. The Stillwater area was mined for chrome ore during World War U and the Korean War, but it was not until 1961 that attention was drawn to the similarities between the Stillwater Complex and the Bushveld Complex of South Africa with its deposits of platinum group metals.A concentrated search for platinum was begun by Manville Corporation in 1967. Its presence, together with palladium, in mineable quantities was confirmed in the period 1976-1978, and the first partnership to develop the deposits was formed by Manville and Chevron in 1979. Anaconda joined the group in 1983, and in 1985 its share was purchased by Lac Minerals. In 1988 the interests of Lac Minerals were purchased by Chevron and Manville.The decision to develop the mine and build a concentrator was made in 1986. Construction began in the fall of that year, and the first concentrate was produced six months later, in March 1987. Underground mining is done in a two-shift, five day- week operation. Since startup, the concentrator has operated on a 24 hour/day, 7 day/week schedule, treating an average of 635 tonnes of ore per day and producing approximately 10 tonnes of concentrate."

"On the mining side the Canadian oil sands industry has become proficient in excavation and disposal of ore and overburden. Nearly twenty years of mining experience is now behind this industry. While local improvements to existing mining systems and practices will continue, it is believed that some further gains in productivity can be achieved by selectively introducing new ideas from other mining and non-mining industries. "Data from a standardized procedure for measuring methane desorption rates from samples of Western Canadian coals gave a good correlation (0.994) with the percentage of fines (-0.6 mm) found in the corresponding run-of-mine coal. The correlation was independent of the mining method and the top size of the samples. It is suggested that both methane desorption rate and the production of fine coal sizes are functions of the fissuration of the coal being mined.This relationship, in conjunction with established data of degradation by unit process equipment, may be useful in predicting the amount of fines that will be produced from new seams of coal and by planned new washeries. It also could be a valuable guide in modifying existing washery processes to minimize production of fines."

"Determining the correct mechanism of a boiler tube failure is important for the prevention of future tube failures. Proper corrective measures can be undertaken to alleviate the root cause or causes for a failure only when the correct mechanism is known. A mechanism of boiler tube failure is defined as the process which degrades the tube and produces a failure.An expert system package was developed for use by electric utility power plant personnel during investigation into the cause of a boiler tube failure. It is intended to assist their efforts to recognize and identify a basic failure mechanism that can produce the type of boiler tube failure under investigation. The program guides the user to the most likely failure mechanism by asking simple questions, answers which can be obtained by determining the failure location, type of fuel, and from visual inspection of the failed tube. Expert systems are a form of artificial intelligence which imitate the decision-making process of experts.IntroductionBoiler tube failures (BTFs) continue to be the single largest source of forced outages in fossil fired electricity generating stations. Because of this a concentrated effort is being made to minimize boiler tube failure occurrences. Eliminating boiler tube failures could be worth $5 billion a year to the electric power industry(1).The aggressive service environment of fossil-fired boilers is largely the reason for these failures because the combined effects of stress, temperature, corrosion, erosion and vibration cause deterioration of boiler tube material properties and reduction in wall thickness.Determination of the boiler tube failure mechanism is important for the prevention of future problems. The root cause for a failure can be established and proper ameliorative measures taken only when the failure mechanism is identified correctly. The correct identification of failure mechanism is a complex process which may include many individuals and institutions. Technical specialists in metallurgy, chemistry, combustion, and boiler design frequently cooperate with the station staff in a failure investigation . These individuals rely on personal experience and numerous reports , theories, studies, private communications and investigations concerning the different failure modes and mechanisms."

Aluminum alloys play an important role in the manufacturing of air and ground vehicles. However, with such alloys, corrosion damage is often found on structural components subjected to fatigue loading. The alloying provides large benefit in terms of the high specific tensile strength (ultimate strength/density ratio) to the aluminum alloy but causes the aluminum alloy to be more sensitive to localized corrosion due to complex microscopic heterogeneities such as secondary phases. This paper investigates thermal spray coating namely arc spraying to evaluate the protection against environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) and localized corrosion on Aircraft structural 7075 T651 aluminum alloys. In particular, EAC and pitting corrosion at the interface coating-substrate are a challenge for thermal spray protective coatings on aluminum alloys under cyclic load and immersion. To address these issues, different surface preparation techniques prior to arc spraying were considered such as chemical de-oxidation, laser ablation, shot peening and grit blasting. Results indicate that surface preparation and improved coating process parameters play an important role to provide a coating conferring a protection against both localized corrosion and EAC.

This study has investigated the use of blast furnace slag as functional adsorbent for metal ions in acid mine drainage treatment. This opportunity has not yet been developed into a practical process partly because of limited understanding of rates and mechanisms of adsorption process and inconsistency in interpretations of adsorption data. The overall objectives were to determine the efficiency and mechanisms of sorption process of metal ions in a multiadsorbate system. We employed standard materials characterisation techniques to analyse composition, structure and surface morphology of the slag. Batch adsorption experiments were then conducted to study the mechanisms, kinetics and efficiency of metal sorption as a function of pH, phase ratio, mixing time, mass and particle sizes of slag. Both XRF and adsorption data suggested the slag to possess acid neutralising capacity. This slag is non-crystalline based on XRD pattern, has adequate porosity and pore volume comparable to similar commercial adsorbents but it has inferior pore structure, pore size distribution and BET surface area to be effective under wide applications. Metal sorption increased with decrease in slag particle diameter, decrease in initial metal concentration and increase in the mass of slag. Although slags have demonstrated to efficiently treat low concentrations of single and multiadsorbate effluents using fine particle sizes, they have limited capacity to treat multiadsorbate systems for some metal ions. This is probably due to low affinity, competitive adsorption or limitation in material?s adsorptive properties. Sorption mechanisms probably involve precipitation and ion exchange on the basis of alkaline pH and exchangeable slag surface ions. Sorption preference is proposed as Fe2+>Cu2+>>Cd2+>Co2+>Mn2+. Despite these limitations, deeper understanding of sorption behaviour of metal ions by slags for application in dilute and large volumes of effluents is necessary where precipitation and other standard techniques are either inefficient or uneconomic. Thus, this study has established that sorption capacity of slag to remove metal ions from acidic effluents is selective, limited to certain metal ions and for other ions only at low concentrations. Further adsorption studies in multiple solutes under various experimental conditions or those that can propose an economic slag activation process are needed that improves or widens adsorption window.

"The Department of Mines and Energy is at present investigating the dimension-stone potential of the Nain anorthosite complex. These rocks are known to host occurrences of labradorite, a semiprecious gemstone known for its beautiful play of colours (chatoyance). Test blocks that contain 5% to 18% chatoyant labradorite were extracted from three prospects south of Nain. These have been slabbed and polished for further evaluation.Second-grade labradorite stockpiled around the Grenfell quarry on Tabor Island is also being evaluated as a potential source of aggregate for use in terrazzo tiles, precast concrete and epoxy-backed wall panels.IntroductionThe Nain anorthosite complex consists of approximately 10000 km2 of anorthosite and related basic rocks , which are well exposed along the coast of Northern Labrador (Fig. 1) (Emslie et al., 1972). These rocks have been known for centuries to host deposits of gem-quality labradorite. The chatoyant nature (i.e. the play of colours or labradorescence) of this semiprecious feldspar has been utilized mostly in the making of jewelry and other polished, handcrafted products. In the early sixties, Brinex Limited (now Brinco Limited) attempted larger scale commercial exploitation of labradorite, including use 'as building stone and in polished precast concrete for facings on buildings' (Brummer, 1984).
