Production of advanced linepipe steels with strength levels of 685MPa (100ksi) and higher requires excellent control of runout table cooling to produce the desired final fine-grained microstructures, which may include acicular ferrite. Cooling is exerted on the runout table by applying water jets onto the hot surface of the strip and heat is removed from the steel by forced convective boiling. The associated boiling mechanisms are complex and include film, transition and nucleate boiling. A pilot-scale runout table test rig has been built to systematically study boiling heat transfer from a moving steel plate by employing industrial scale headers. Experiments were conducted using test plates moving at speeds between 0.3 m/s and 1.4 m/s. The plates were cooled down from 850°C to temperatures below saturation by a single water jet supplied through an industrial size circular nozzle. Based on these experiments heat fluxes were determined and further used to develop improved runout table cooling models.

The world nowadays faces many challenges associated with excessive utilization of fossil, fuels, such as poor air quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen appears to be an attractive alternative to the conventional, fossil, fuels with better energy efficiency and less environmental, impact. Pd and Pd-based alloy are the most often used membranes for hydrogen separation due to their superiority over other membranes. However, the stability of the commonly-used thin Pd-based composite membranes at high temperatures still, remains a big challenge. In this presentation, we will, report our progress on thin Pd-Ru alloy composite membrane by electroless plating high temperature applications.

JEWELL, Dominion Foundries and Steel Ltd., Hamilton, Ont.The disposal of acidic waste liquors from pickling processes has always been a problem for the steel industry. With increased awareness toward environmental control and the problems acidic wastes create, processes utilizing recovery and regeneration of the waste acids are becoming more popular. This paper describes the Keramchemie/Lurgi process for regenerating hydrochloric acid from waste pickle liquor using a fluidized bed reactor system. The process parameters are outlined, together with a brief description of the equipment. This is followed by a discussion of the operating problems and concludes with economic data."

Application of integrally bladed disks (blisks) is of increasing interest in compressors of aero engines. Blisks are preferred due to their potential for size and weight reduction, for increased performance and for reduced manufacturing costs compared to conventionally bladed disks. Erosion of the blisk aerofoils in service reduces engine performance, and can result in short shop visit cycles. This significantly increases the life cycle cost of these components, particular when considering that eroded aerofoils can't be exchanged easily for blisks during refurbishment. Shop visit cycle times can be extended and maintenance costs can be reduced through the application of an effective protective coating. The ongoing development of an erosion resistant coating and deposition process suitable for coating complex blisk geometries is described here. The coating is a multilayered W /TiB2 system exhibiting superior erosion resistance compared to known single- and other multilayer concepts. A modified sputter process is used to enable coating even of blisk geometries with shadowed surface to competitive recurring cost.

"Evaluating resources and reserves requires the reliable modelling of geological domains and their grades. “Multiple point statistics” simulation is a relatively new geostatistical method to generate complex, high-resolution geological models by extracting high-order spatial relations from training images. A method based on combining multiple training images is developed to obtain the correct amount of large-scale continuity and short-scale variability. A calibration process matches the geological spatial variability between the final realizations and the drillhole dataset. A case study with data from the Red Dog mine, Alaska, United States, shows an appropriate reproduction of short-scale variability along boundaries between geological units.RÉSUMÉ L’évaluation des ressources et des réserves exige une modélisation fiable des domaines géologiques et de leur teneur. La simulation par « statistique multipoint » est une méthode géostatistique relativement nouvelle pour générer des modèles géologiques complexes à haute résolution par l’extraction de relations spatiales d’ordre supérieur à partir d’images d’entraînement. Une méthode basée sur la combinaison de multiples images d’entraînement est développée afin d’obtenir la bonne quantité de continuité à grande échelle et de variabilité à petite échelle. Un processus d’étalonnage fait correspondre la variabilité géologique spatiale entre les réalisations finales et l’ensemble des données de forage. Une étude de cas avec des données de la mine Red Dog, Alaska, États-Unis, montre une reproduction adéquate de la variabilité à petite échelle le long des limites entre les unités géologiques."

The kinetics of the oxidation of uranium(IV) by oxygen gas in aqueous systems is dependent on acid concentration, oxygen partial pressure, and temperature. In order to better understand the relationship between these variables and the speed of oxidation, a series of experiments have been conducted where each parameter has been varied in turn. Data were collected continuously using UVVis spectroscopy, allowing for a detailed examination of the reaction rate over the course of each experiment. The data fit an overall apparent rate law that is 1.5order in uranium(IV), -2order in H+, first order in oxygen, and unaffected by uranium(VI). This relationship does not appear to hold for solutions with <0.2 mol/L initial acid, where a different kinetic mechanism appears to be dominant.

The mechanism of thiosulfate decomposition and the products formed were investigated in the presence of pyrite or pyrrhotite in copper-ammonia solutions used for leaching gold. The presence of the sulfides significantly increased the decomposition of thiosulfate. The sulfide-surface-catalyzed oxidation of thiosulfate to tetrathionate by dissolved oxygen or the cupric tetra-ammine complex was proposed to be the dominant thiosulfate decomposition mechanism. The catalysis of the sulfides in this reaction could originate from their strong affinity for aqueous sulfur species and their semiconducting properties. Oxygen was found to be the initial driving force for thiosulfate decomposition in the absence of cupric ions and the driving force for the continuous decomposition of thiosulfate in the presence of cupric ions. Under an oxygen free atmosphere, the decomposition of thiosulfate was limited to reduce the cupric ions and the catalytic effect of the sulfides was also marginal. The dominant oxidative product of thiosulfate was trithionate in alkaline solutions especially in an oxygen rich or cupric ion rich environment. Tetrathionate was found in relatively smaller amounts in an oxygen and cupric ion deficient environment. Tetrathionate was not stable and would further decompose after extended periods. Trithionate concentrations increased almost linearly with time.

THIS PAPER describes the re-grind section in the 2,000-ton per day, lead-zinc flotation mill of Canadian Exploration Limited, near Salmo, B.C. There are two re-grind units in operation, one in the lead circuit, and one in the zinc circuit. In each unit, the rougher concentrate is re-ground ahead of the cleaning circuit. These re-grind units have made valuable improvements in the concentrate grade, and with no loss in recovery by over-grinding galena or sphalerite. Since the initial installation of this re-grind section, the plant throughput has been increased gradually from 1,600 tons to 2,000 tons per twenty-four hours, and, as shown by the screen analysis of mill tailing, a coarser overall grind has been accepted, from 55 per cent to 45 per ?cent minus 200 mesh. There has been no increase in grinding capacity, but two mills have been taken from the main grinding circuit and used for the re-grind circuit.

"This paper is based on a statistical analysis of the Smallwood iron ore mine (6). In this mine, the prediction of magnetite is especially difficult because of strong trends. Recognizing the statistical limitations of the sample data, the paper approaches the basic statistical analysis of the magnetite by endeavouring to obtain a first approximation of its sample density function. The knowledge of the distribution of a random variable is essential for several reasons, but particularly: (1) to obtain reliable estimators of the population parameters -for example, mean and variance; and (2) to use these estimators in hypothesis-testing concerning future experiments -sample points and sample intervals."

This paper presents the shielding effectiveness (SE) of woven continuous carbon/epoxy composite materials. The theoretical and physical concepts behind the experimental results are demonstrated in details. The influence of frequency, the overlapping angle between overlapped layers and the number of overlapped layers upon the EMI shielding of composite sheets are discussed. In this work, in particular, the epoxy layers are considered as dielectric apertures of the conducting carbon fiber slab for the interpretation of the experimental results. The experimental results, using ASTM standard D4935-89, indicate that the SE can reach values greater than 90 dB above 500 MHz.

"This work investigates the early stages of precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys using a combination of high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Quenching from a high temperature (solution) treatment leaves an alloy in a high-energy unstable state, with solute and vacancies in supersaturation. Thus, already at room temperature (RT) a large driving force exists for solute atoms to cluster and order on the Al matrix positions. DFT calculations indicate that strain alleviation is important at this stage. We observe larger regions of Mg-dominated L10 ordering together with a Si-dominated ordering of smaller clusters in a particular geometry connected to the Si-network found in all the precipitates. In addition, building blocks of the main hardening phase ?'', stabilized by vacancies, are observed at higher, typical pre-aging temperatures.INTRODUCTION Al-Mg-Si (6xxx) alloys are widely used in industry due to a combination of favorable properties such as strength, ductility, corrosion resistance and lightweight. They undergo a complex production route, usually consisting of the following thermo-mechanical steps: casting, homogenization, extrusion or rolling, solution heat treatment (SHT) and artificial aging (AA). The SHT takes place at temperatures above the solvus line in the phase diagram, usually between 500°C and 570°C, followed by a rapid cooling to RT. This ensures that high amounts of solute atoms, uniformly distributed on the cubic face-centered (FCC) Al lattice, together with a large amount of vacancies, are quenched-in. The material is therefore in a super-saturated and unstable state. During the subsequent AA, at temperatures usually between 150°C and 220°C, the solute atoms diffuse and cluster, forming metastable precipitates with needle/ lath/ rod morphologies having the main growth direction along <100>Al. With a maximum alloy solute level (Mg + Si) of only 2%, these precipitates increase material strength up to three times that of pure Al, and are essential for the final material properties. To understand and make better use of this phenomenon, it is imperative to research the nature of the precipitates (such as their atomic structure), measure their key parameters (number density, size, volume fraction) and connect it to material properties (Marioara, Andersen, Zandbergen & Holmestad, 2005; Marioara et al., 2014). ABSTRACT A significant factor in evaluating bitumen recovery from an oil sands mine is the particle size distribution (PSD). Increased understanding of mined ore quality and improvement in predictions of recovery can be achieved through PSD modeling. This paper addresses PSD modeling using geostatistics. PSDs may be described using many discrete particle sizes, making this a challenge. The approach parameterizes PSDs with a few statistics. A lookup table is used to reconstruct the PSDs based on models of the statistics. The workflow is applied to Total E&P Canada’s Joslyn Lease and yields good results that reproduce input statistics without introducing artifacts.

"A pyroxenite-carbonatite complex containing extensive pyrochlore mineralization was discovered during January, 1966, within an exploratory license area held by Consolidated Morrison Explorations Limited. Located 32 miles south of Moosonee, Ontario, the deposit was found under 100 feet of glacial till and Paleozoic sedimentary cover using airborne and ground magnetometer surveys. Exploratory and detailed drilling, totalling 47,625 feet in 85 holes, was completed in outlining the deposit to a maximum depth of 900 feet. Pyrochlore reserves are estimated at 62,000,000 tons averaging 0.52 per cent Cb,05 to a depth of 825 feet. Included in this tonnage is a high-grade section containing 10,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.82 per cent Cb20 5• The deposit is still open at depth and the intrusive complex has by no means been fully explored.The columbium (niobium) mineralization occurs in a lineated calcite-dolomite host rock which has been intruded along a fault zone within a northeast-trending granulite belt. Potassium-argon dating indicates an age of 1655 million years.Preliminary studies suggest that the complex was intruded in a series of pulses in the form of a partially crystallized mush. The James Bay intrusive is unusual in that it is linear in form and contains only two main rock types - p•yroxenite and carbonatite. Nepheline-bearing syenites and associated rocks are notably absent. Moreover, the pyrochlore is essentially non-radioactive and free from many of the impurities generally associated with other pyrochlores. A test shaft to investigate soil conditions and to provide a 250-ton bulk sample was completed during 1968. Subsequent pilot-plant operations indicate that good quality pyrochlore concelttrates can be produced from this deposit."

The AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction) industry is an information intensive industry and all related processes employed during different phases of a project, including planning, designing, building, manufacturing, occupying, and maintenance, involve vast amounts of data that is used for a wide variety of purposes. Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a powerful shared knowledge resource which stores this data to support decision making about a facility through all these different phases in its life cycle. Nowadays, BIM is mostly used in the design and construction phases while it can also be highly beneficial beyond those stages. For example, in the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) phase, BIM could be used for automated facilities management or robotic inspection to provide semantic knowledge for navigation. For any implementation not related to the original intent of the BIM (design), organizations need to be able to represent their project data in a common interpretable form, which provides the possibility of an accurate exchange of data among different software products and platforms, known as interoperability. This study has investigated the current state of interoperability between software products used as Building Information Modeling tools. The main focus has been on a popularly used format for BIM models, Industry Foundation Classes (IFC), since it has been specifically developed to enable standardized data exchange. The research methodology involved a comprehensive literature review and the gathering of all fragmented prior research related to the field in order to develop a consistent understanding of the current state of knowledge. This was accompanied with a detailed case study that evaluated and compared two dominant pieces of BIM software, Revit and Bentley, and examined their interoperability strengths and weaknesses while using the IFC format.

"In the present study, the reduction behavior of composite pellets comprising of iron oxide, synthetic graphite and slags were investigated in a laboratory-scale horizontal tube furnace. Two different types of slags indicating silicate base and aluminate base slags were chosen to examine the effect of slag chemistry on the reduction behavior of pellets. Slag composition of binding materials has influences on the reactions occurring in composite pellets during direct reduction. In-situ high temperature visualization approach was used to observe the slag / iron / carbon interactions at 1773K (1500°C). The off-gases were measured by means of infrared analyzer to determine the reaction rates of the pellets. Different physical appearances during the in situ reaction inferred a strong correlation between the slag composition and internal reactions. In addition, compression tests were conducted to examine physical strength of the pellets. This investigation was carried out to establish feasibility of physical property control of pellets by selecting optimum slag compositions of binding materials INTRODUCTIONCurrently, most of the iron ore mines have facilities that make an ore more usable for the blast furnace operation by improving its physical properties (e.g. pelletizing and sintering). However, during the process, a large amount of fuel is supplied to indurate materials which consequently deteriorate energy efficiency and produce more CO2 emission. Along with increased interests, direct reduced iron (DRI) making process; simply without coke oven or sintering process, has opened the era of clean and environmental friendly iron making process. While some of the established DRI technologies such as Midrex and HYL were restricted to certain locations where natural gas is abundant, coal based technologies using Rotary Hearth Furnace (RHF) such as FASMET and ITmk3 have been developed with regardless of expensive fuel deposit. In addition to the direct use of pulverized non coking coal and fine iron ore, RHF process also has advantages of utilizing waste materials such as EAF dust, biomass and recycled plastics. Nevertheless, there are still many challenges in the coal utilizing technologies as the unprocessed coal and the waste materials contain huge volatiles and ashes. Although recent investigations on volatiles in a RHF process (Sohn and Fruehan, 2005, 2006) have indicated the benefits of coal in terms of iron oxide reduction and have shown feasibility of multi-layer process, carbon composite pellets still have disadvantages because of its weak mechanical bonding strength. As the mixed system with carbon and oxides generates intermediate gases (e.g. CO and CO2) between solid particles, it is difficult to keep its physical state without the help of binding materials. In this reason, industries have been tried to use various binding materials such as bentonite, kaolinite and Portland cement. However, they are still struggling to find out new materials that provide not only sufficient mechanical strength but also metallurgical properties, such as porosity, reducibility and swelling throughout the reduction reaction. Recently, Canadian researchers (Aota et al, 2006) observed enhanced mechanical strength of pellets by using high alumina cement as a binder and concluded that the method could be used to recycle EAF dust as well, but in depth mechanism of reinforced strength has not been concerned. Most of the ashes coming from binders formulate certain type of slag during the reduction process due to its incombustibility. Thus, observation and regulation of slag property is an essential for the control of carbon composite pellet. Yet, only a little thermodynamic consideration from the perspective of slag chemistry has been adapted in the iron and steel making industries as ash has been easily ignored for its tiny proportion. "Uranium may be leached to some extent in situ from the Blind River conglomerate uranium ores by using the products of bacterial activity from the bacterium Thio-bacillus ferrooxidans his paper describes some of the laboratory techniques used to investigate the characteristics of the bacteria, and to utilize their properties in uranium leaching. The application of some of the laboratory results underground at the Milliken mine of Rio Algom Mines Limited are de-scribed, along with the method of uranium recovery from the mine waters."

The economic evolution from an agrarian society to an industrial and service-oriented economy is apparent to most students of history. The long-term trend is almost taken for granted, it does not require explanation — it is accepted as the nature of man to improve his standard of living. However, there are fluctuations around this trend line which have provoked a great deal of thought. The ability to understand and control these fluctuations would yield many benefits, it would eliminate economic waste and public hardship, and would no doubt make a few fortunes. I f it is not possible to control or eliminate these fluctuations, then a reasonable forecast of the tinting, rate of change and magnitude of the fluctuations would be invaluable to industry and government.

This paper deals with the selection and design of a belt conveyor handling steam coal between a mine and a barge loading terminal, and extending for some 5 ¼ miles over some of the most rugged terrain in the state of West Virginia, U.S.A. After a thorough analysis by consulting engineers and the owner's engineers, a single-flight cablebelt conveyor was chosen as representing the alternative of greatest reliability and lowest over-all cost. The value analysis and design features of the system are covered in this paper along with an updated report on the performance of the system since its start-up in the spring of 1969.

"Adsorption isotherms of hexyl mercaptan vapour on synthetic sphalerite, zinc sulphide and zinc oxide were de-termined with a gravimetric McBain-Baker micro balance incorporated in the B.E.T. apparatus. Isotherms are given for hexyl mercaptan on synthetic sphalerite at 25°C, 0.5°C and 50°C; on zinc sulphide at 25°C and 1.5°C; and on zinc oxide at 25°C. All these isotherms are sigmoidal, with a definite change in slope at or close to the mono-layer. The amount of mercaptan adsorbed below the monolayer increases almost linearly with relative pressure to P/P0 = 0.8.Above this value, the amount adsorbed increases very rapidly with relative pressure. Hysteresis loops appear in the isotherms for all adsorption-desorption cycles. These loops are completely reversible. It is not possible to desorb the mercaptan monolayer from any of the adsorbents, even at elevated temperatures."
