An account of milling "methods and costs at Mount Isa Mines Limited up to the year 1938 has been published. The present paper outlines the methods since adopted in the milling of lead-zinc ores and presents a description of the equipment now being provided for the milling of copper ore.The programme approved for the mining, milling and smelting of both lead-zinc and copper ores involves the milling 9f 50,000 tons of lead-:-zinc ore and 35,000 tons of copper ore per month.The crushed ores will be delivered to the surface from alternate levels through No. 2 Ore shaft and conveyed to their respective crude ore bins at the crushing plant. The ores will be crushed and milled in separate circuits in common buildings and the tailings will be stored on a common tailings dump. The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

Site-based case studies (including data collected from industrial surveys) and their application in evaluating circuit performance, have a significant role in developing reliable process models. Such models are useful to both plant metallurgists and researchers. Appropriate process models enable the plant metallurgist to assess the impact of different operational parameters on the overall circuit performance. They also provide the researcher with a detailed understanding of process behaviour in response to changes in ore characteristics and process conditions (ie plant throughput, ore competence, ore type). Thus enabling the identification of effective operating factors, and allowing them to be ranked in order of their influence on the process response, which eventually develops into a process control tool in the hands of plant operators.The above approach has been developed and applied at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) separately for both comminution and flotation processes. In recent years, the JKMRC has attempted an integrated approach by developing process models that incorporate the impact of upstream processes on downstream processes. This is not possible using the traditional approach of separate comminution and flotation surveys, so conducting integrated plant surveys is crucial for success in developing integrated process models. This paper summarises industrial experience gained while conducting such an integrated plant survey at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining operation near Cloncurry in north Queensland. An appropriate approach should be taken to enable the alignment of different requirements from different processes during the plant survey. Centennial Coal operates the Springvale longwall mining operation which extracts coal beneath the Newnes Plateau in the Western Coalfields of New South Wales. Springvale, and the neighbouring Angus Place mine, have a history of difficult geotechnical conditions where combinations of a relatively high stress regime and weak, laminated roof and extensive geological faulting has led to numerous roof failures throughout the mine’s life. Following development, the mines underground roadways can experience high levels of roof movement which may lead to roof falls. Multipoint wire extensometers are extensively used throughout the mine for roadway condition monitoring, and to reactively drive remedial strata support through trigger action response plans (TARPs).As a result of the use of high-density extensometer monitoring over a long period, the mines have an extensive archive of legacy data. Data processing has evolved over time in order to accommodate the increasing data volume, including direct data entry from the recently introduced hard-wired real-time monitoring instruments. It is likely that telemetric real-time instruments will be introduced in the future, which will cause another step change in data management requirements. This paper discusses the transition to and evolution of relational database management systems for extensometer and associated data.This paper also presents case studies of the use of a new software tool for reprocessing legacy data to enable time-scaled visualisation of monitoring data in the context of longwall and development face positions and installed strata support. The software can be used proactively in the identification of geotechnical risk factors and their interaction with the mining process to allow a more robust geotechnical hazard process. It interfaces directly with the widely used ExtoChart database software and can be presented with scale drawings of geological and geotechnical data to allow correlation of monitoring data results with risk factors.CITATION:Corbett, P and Sheffield, P, 2015. Silver and gold bearing ore from the Palmarejo mine, located within the Mexican state of Chihuahua, contains a complex mix of electrum, native silver, silver sulfides and silver chlorides. This paper presents a case study that describes the selection, development and engineering of a tailored process plant for the recovery of silver and gold from this ore. Process circuit feasibility study modelling, metallurgical test work and engineering studies are outlined. Options considered to optimise the recovery of the contained silver and gold are compared, based upon cost, operability, recovery and engineering aspects. Concentration by flotation was found to be the preferred primary recovery route. Intensive leaching of the flotation concentrate resulted in solution grades sufficient to allow direct electrowinning to be evaluated against the more traditional Merrill Crowe process. The flotation tailings stream is processed through a separate leaching stage as there is sufficient economic metal extractable from this stream. The processing flow sheet, which is designed to maximise the recovery from both the flotation concentrate and tailings, and to utilise a common metal production facility, is presented.

Currently, thick single lift, simultaneous multi lift and non simul- taneous multi lift mining methods are adopted as underground flat thick seam excavations in Japan. These are now reliable and effective in increasing the extraction ratio. At Kushiro Colliery of Taiheiyo Coal Mining Co., these three thick seam mining methods have been used. According to the results, if solidification of the top lift goaf is essential, the non simul- taneous multi lift mining method is the most effective in increasing the extraction ratio without minimising productivity of each lift and it points out that further development of this method is necessary.

Appin Colliery mines the Bulli Seam with a gas composition of 98.5% methane and 1.5% carbon dioxide. Relaxation of the strata generally occurs to below the base of the Wongawilli Seam, some 40 m below the Bulli Seam, and approxim- ately 125 m above the Bulli Seam, for longwall face widths of 135 m or more. Previous exper- ience showed that when longwall faces were mined for a distance approximately equal to the face width, the mine ventilation could not provide sufficient dilution due to methane emissions from the underlying measures. Postdraining downholes were drilled to intersect the Wongawilli Seam below the operat- ng longwall. These holes were connected to an underground to surface gas range and various suction levels were applied to improve gas drainage. The resulting gas flow rates and purity from all the downholes were regularly monitored and peak flows in some holes exceeded 160 1/sec. The surface plant drained almost 20 million m3 of gas for the period July 1981 to January 1982 at an average methane purity of approximately 70%. Distinct patterns emerged for different downholes from curves illustrat- ing their variations in flow rate with distance subsequent to passage of the longwall face. Following unprecedented high market prices for tin and gold in 1980, significant advances in both mining technology and geological knowledge took place in northeast Queensland. These led to a rapid growth in mining activity. Production of these traditional metals reached levels comparable to those of the heyday of mining activity at the turn of the century.Although tin and tungsten prices have since collapsed, the geological knowledge gained and significant discoveries made during the boom, have created a potential for mine development when prices rise again. For other discoveries which are not workable because of treatment problems, future technological advances are required to raise their potential.

Geotechnical investigations have played a key role in influencing decisions for development of the Porgera Gold Project in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Porgera is located 130 km west-northwest of Mt. Hagen in steep mountainous terrain with high rainfall. Much of the site is underlain by weak mudstone of the Chim Formation and creeping colluvial soils. Landsliding is common on the steeper slopes and in the valley floors. Structures have had to be sited to avoid areas susceptible to these movements. Early stage feasibility investigations included studies of tailings dam and waste rock dump sites, processing plant sites and hydroelectriic schemes. Further studies, leading into the design stage included the Enga Highway upgrading, water supply and power supply schemes. As construction for the project proceeds geotechnical input remains at a high level, with emphasis now on maintaining viable stable sites and refining data on which designs were based.

Astute exploration on the northern Minahasa Peninsula, North Sulawesi, resulted in the discovery of the Toka Tindung, Pajajaran, Blambagan and Araren low-sulphidation quartz-adularia vein and stockwork gold-silver deposits. Combined, these deposits have estimated mineral resources in excess of I Moz gold at an average grade of 2.8 gAu/t and 7 gAg/t and are known as the Toka Tindung Gold Project. Gold typically occurs as fine grained electrum and is often associated with acanthite. The structurally controlled mineralised veins are hosted by Late Pliocene plagioclase and pyroxene-phyric basaltic andesite volcaniclastics and flows which form part of the Early Miocene to Pleistocene Sulawesi-East Mindanao Arc. Silica-adularia alteration dominates the volcaniclastic host of the Toka Tindung deposit. K-Ar dating of vein adularia indicates a 2.16 ¦ 0.04 Ma mineralisation age. Relatively narrow envelopes of silicification and argillisation surround the chalcedonic silica, quartz and adularia veins, stockworks and breccias at the other three deposits. Remnant hydrothermal breccias, chalcedony and anomalous arsenic, antimony and mercury indicate these gold deposits were part of a mineralised geothermal system.As of June 1997, Aurora Gold Ltd is finalising a feasibility study on exploitation of the four deposits and treatment of ore through a centrally located conventional CIP plant. Subsea tailings disposal is anticipated. Favourable metallurgy of the ore and logistics of the project area assist in minimising capital requirements.

It is possible from simple gas behavioral theories to develop more complex relationships which allow prediction of transport phenomena such as diffusivity and viscosity of gas mixtures. Such physical data can be used in engineering calculations for both bulk gas movement and gaseous chemical species movement. Both of these are important in the solution of mines ventilation systems. There are specific limits of flammibili!'y of some common mines gases.

Draglines have found wide application in strip mining coal seams down to 60m depth. A research Project funded through NERDDC has been underway during the past two years investigating the application of large draglines loading overburden into hoppers feeding into conveyor systems or off-highway trucks. This paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations and covers overburden characteristics, bucket spotting con- trol, bucket design, conceptual hopper systems, system application at representative mine sites, and broad process comparison. The studies have initiated new concepts in the extended use of draglines at deeper strip- ping depths. Alternate arrangements for dragline bucket rigging and bucket control aspects of dragline stripping operations offer productivity improvements. Extended use of existing draglines includes, draglines dumping into hoppers which feed large trucks or conveyors, trigger dump buckets rigging arrangements, and rear dump dragline buckets with integral grizzly bars. The paper details these suggestions, and points to specific areas where the most productive applied research is anticipated. Mine planning considerations detail the factors involved in selecting dragline bench heights in association with hopper operations.

A Swedish table of blast damage depths has, in one form or other, been in use since the late-1970s. Its history and the underlying theory are described. New experimental and theoretical findings that point out a number of shortcomings in the table and the underlying theory are presented and discussed. A revised version of the blast damage table was recently introduced in conjunction with new but incomplete recommendations for cautious perimeter blasting. The new table leaves the difficult task of taking into account factors like decoupling, water in the borehole, the rock properties, type of initiation, charge length and the actual bit diameter to the user. This paper discusses different ways of doing this, based on the experimental findings and a recent formula for the prediction of the lengths of radial cracks behind the half-casts. The material presented in this paper is meant to supplement and extend the new Swedish recommendations for cautious perimeter blasting of tunnels, shafts, pits and road cuts.

The environmental and social responsibilities of the mining industry have long been recognized by the industry itself, but during the past decade it became one of the main targets for the more radical members of the community. This came as something of a shock to an industry which had always considered that it had acted responsibly within the standards of the day. As far back as early 1968, the Australian Min- ing Industry Council (AMIC) was clipping from newspapers the odd letter written by environmen- talists and critics of mining activities. In those days every such letter was carefully studied to ensure that AMIC, if not having the answers, at least had an understanding of the types of argu- ments then starting to be used against mining activity and in favour of environmental preserva- tion. Within 18 months, the infrequent letter to the editor had become a flood of such letters and feature articles, and the environmentalists' attack on mining activities had been launched in all its Vehemence.

The Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone (ASH) has been developed for the fast and efficient flotation of fine mineral particles in a centrifugal field during the past decade at the University of Utah. Over the years, the air-sparged hydrocyclone unit has shown promising potential for the flotation of copper porphyry ore, low-grade placer gold and auriferous pyrite ores, various industrial minerals, and fine coal cleaning. Many fundamental studies including the X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis have been carried out in order to understand the multiphase fluid flow phenomena associated with ASH flotation. With data available from these studies, it is now possible to construct more accurate ASH flotation models for different applications in order to analyse the behaviour of the system and to optimise design and operating variables. The ASH flotation model developed in this paper is based on the data given in `Air-Sparged Hydrocyclone/Advanced Froth Flotation Fine Coal Cleaning', Final Report, DOE Contract No DE-AC-88PC88853, submitted by Pennsylvania Electric Company (PENELEC), December 1989. Data from several hundred experiments with the two-inch ASH-2C air-sparged hydrocyclone (capacity 0.1 - 0.3 tph dry coal) are available from the report and have been used for this analysis. In the past, a preliminary model based on limited data had been developed. The current study, however, emphasises the global behaviour of the ASH system by utilising almost all the data from the report for the purpose of scale-up and industrial application. There are two parts in the current modeling and analysis effort for ASH flotation of fine coal. The first part is the modeling/analysis of dimensionless ratio of overflow opening area to underflow opening area, A*, and the dimensionless ratio of air flowrate to slurry flowrate, Q . The second part involves the modelling/analysis of all other variables in the system and an expert system for operation and control is introduced.

Strip mining offers the advantages of high productivity from both human and capital resources as well as high rates of production. Experience suggests that it will be advantageous to extend strip mining to the maximum pos- sible depth in order to minimize costs and maximize the recovery of the in situ coal reserves. Highwall and spoilheap stability pose significant problems. Deep working in strip mines is likely to produce a change from methods which are based upon the elevation of material followed by dumping, to methods involving elevation and horizontal transport. There is considerable scope for optimizing the types of machines and minimizing the amount of double handling.

The Early Proterozoic metamorphic rocks of the Broken Hill (BH) Block have been recently subdivided into sixteen formations and four groups (Willis et al., 1983b, Stevens et al., 1983). This stratigraphic subdivision has relied upon recognition of distinctive mapped rock units and "associations" of mapped rock units, which characterize particular lithostratigraphic units. The rock units and rock unit associations define local ordered sequences which can be compared and correlated, thereby establishing the stratigraphic succession. In the Clevedale homestead, Thackaringa, BH City, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas, coherent stratigraphic successions have been interpreted. These areas illustrate the regional variability of the stratigraphic succession and facies changes within individual stratigraphic units. Stratigraphic type sections are located in the Thackaringa, Bores Mine-Freyers mine, Silver King mine, and Brewery Well areas. The principles of stratigraphic interpretation applied in the BH Block can be used in other areas of Willyama Supergroup outcrop such as the Euriowie, Olary and Mount Painter Blocks. The general technique may also have applicability to other highly deformed and metamorphosed terrains.

The need to solve the problems associated with spontaneous combustion, system of ventil- ation and methane drainage in gassy coal mines has brought about the development of mining and degassing methods which has made possible up to 80% gas recovery in retreating longwalls. Beneficial results also were obtained mostly in the double or multiple-entry systems, but for single-entry systems and for a seam thickness exceeding 3 m, gas recovery rate is still very low. With some single-heading systems, such as those where a return roadway is not maintained in the goaf behind the face line, a new methane drainage technology is practiced. Attempts were made to extract methane from roof holes drilled from offsets in the ribside of the longwall block. The inclinations and lengths of the boreholes were planned and designed on the basis of the geological and mining condit- ions encountered at the time and every second hole was terminated precisely at the point where the previous hole intersected the immed- iate roof goaf area above the face. There are mathematical relations approp- riate to the design of the above drainage systems to give optimum methane recovery under the given conditions. Some examples of drainage have reached 87% recovery and have attained 94% CH4 purity.

A number of theoretical papers have been published outlining the use of electronic detonators to limit peak particle vibrations levels, but few empirical studies have been undertaken and even fewer examples have been published of the use of such technology in the aggregates industry. This paper gives a summary of the research work carried out at two limestone quarries in the North of England, where a series of blasts were used to compare and contrast the use of electronic and non-electric detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out using the same burden, spacing and decked charge weight loadings. A methodology was established that could be used to reduce the peak particle velocities (PPVs) at two or more specific locations by using single-hole blast vibration signatures in conjunction with specific electronic detonator timing intervals. The initial study concluded that this was only possible if single-hole signature blasts were periodically recorded to establish the shape of the correct vibration envelopes as properties were approached. These wave envelopes could then be used as the basis for choosing the specific electronic detonator timing intervals to give the lowest PPV for the properties or locations concerned. This methodology was then used in the second study to access a large volume of aggregates adjacent to a working railway tunnel. The financial benefit for the company was to convert these additional tonnages of rock from being a resource to an exploitable reserve. The project involved careful blast design and the instrumentation of a number of boreholes to enable the results of blast monitoring exercises to be compared with predicted PPV results. The iterative process involved the vibration results being uploaded into æBlast LogÆ (an expert blasting database system developed by the Blasting and Environmental Research Group at the University of Leeds) and analysed to produce predictions ready for the next blast.
