A resource model serves two main purposes depending on the stage of a project. The first is to provide an early indication of likely tonnages and grades at certain cut-offs so that decisions can be made on whether continued spending on the project is justified. The second is to provide a basis for mine planning, feasibility studies and reserves. Resource models are not designed for selection of actual blocks in the ground for processing. This is the purpose of a grade control model, which is created at a stage beyond both resources and reserves.Inferred, Indicated and Measured Resources contain different levels of uncertainty with respect to the accuracy of the resulting grade and tonnage curves. These uncertainties arise from three broad areas: quality of information, geological assumptions and estimation technique. This paper focuses on known problems with the ordinary kriging (OK) estimation technique. Resource estimates often produce smoothed block grade distributions with much lower block grade variability than true selective mining unit (SMU) block grade distributions. There are two main factors that are involved in this smoothing. Firstly, where the block size used for estimation is larger than the SMU block size, this will smooth the block grade distribution and move the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves. Secondly, and less well recognised, is that smoothing is inherent in the OK estimator. This also moves the grade and tonnage curves away from the true SMU grade and tonnage curves, even when the estimate is done at the SMU block size. There are a number of techniques, such as simulation, uniform conditioning and degraded search neighbourhoods that can provide a better approximation of the true SMU block grade and tonnage curves at the expense of individual block accuracy.This paper aims to explore the extent to which OK resource estimates designed to maximise individual block accuracy can differ from (an estimate of) the true resource at SMU block size in terms of grade and tonnage curves. The differences at economic cut-offs and above are examined. In some cases these differences are significant. Both the OK estimation technique and block size play a part in the differences observed. To do this we will examine a number of commodities and deposit types using real project data.The conclusion is that the current industry standard default practice of targeting maximum individual block accuracy (conditional unbiasedness) using OK at resource stage, without consideration or evaluation of the extent of associated smoothing at SMU scale, can lead to significant errors in fundamental mine planning decisions. Hatch forecasts that an increasing share of seaborne traded iron ore will be ultrafine, being either concentrate or pellet feed. This provides several challenges for the iron and steel industries, but the principal concern is: how much ultrafine iron ore can be consumed on sinter strands and with a minimal effect on productivity?This paper will identify new supply by project through 2020. Demand will be estimated for sinter production and practical steps will be identified to increase ultrafine consumption in sinter strands. The long-term iron ore price will be forecast to balance supply and demand. The current status of battery collection and recycling schemes in Australia are explored in light of current developments in product stewardship and increasing pressure to decrease materials going to landfill by originating equipment manufacturers. Used consumer batteries, both single cycle and rechargeable contain a mixture of valuable metals and potentially toxic materials that may become a resource/revenue stream to offset the cost of disposal/recycling. Although the volume of batteries discarded in Australia is modest compared to other global population centres, the expected increase in battery use with increasing equipment portability and future developments in the automotive industry, provide an opportunity to recycle. The requirements for a battery recycling facility in Australia and the most promising processing platforms that may exploit the resource with enough flexibility to cope with battery developments and market trends, are explored.

In the present study, from experimental results, a new concept of possibility of flotation separation of quartz from feldspar is presented. The effect of the nonionic surfactant Brij 58 on the flotation behaviour of quartz and feldspar has been investigated. The effect of the surfactant adsorption at the solid-liquid interface was also studied. The results demonstrate that maximum flotability of quartz occurred at low concentration of surfactant. Feldspar is not collected by this surfactant. Flotation tests with feldspar that had previously been subjected to leaching by hydrochloric acid yielded similar flotation response as that of quartz. The effect of removal of alkali cations from feldspar surface on its flotability was investigated. The effects of inorganic and organic additives on the flotation recovery of quartz are discussed in terms of the slating-out or salting-in properties of these additives. "Falls of ground still cause around one-third of all underground mining fatalities. The recent introduction of mechanised room and pillar working into Indian coalmines is an example of the application of new design by measurement and safety monitoring strategies, which can be used to reduce falls of ground risks in mines.Rock Mechanics Technology, now part of Golder Associates UK Ltd (Golder), is providing rock bolt support and pillar design services to the mines using a design by measurement approach. This involves in situ monitoring to confirm support and pillar designs and pillar extraction sequences.Site examples are given of the support designs determined and the monitoring programs undertaken for both design and safety.Routine safety monitoring of roof movement using telltales is also described. A new auto warning telltale has been developed specifically to warn of imminent caving as pillars are extracted.The approach used by Golder has played a major role in ensuring the success of these projects. As a consequence, mechanised room and pillar working is now firmly established in India, and wider application is planned to help meet future demand for coal.The experience confirms that the design by measurement method for this application has important advantages over conventional design approaches using analytical or empirical methods. Firstly, it measures the design performance or outcome rather than trying to calculate or predict it. Secondly, it provides the opportunity for the design to be adjusted to obtain the optimum outcome. Thirdly, it can do this at a local level, so that the support design can be matched to changing conditions to give the most cost-effective design. This paper has been written collaboratively by members of the International Mining VR Group. It is the first of a series of papers. Mining in the 21st century is a high technology industry that strives to reduce risk and improve safety through the use of improved processes and procedures. This risk reduction process is aligned with the innovative use of technologies often developed for other industries. Computer-based visualisation systems and their content are such innovative technologies, in particular the use of virtual environment systems and mixed reality. A primary objective of developing virtual environment systems and the mixed reality content displayed in them for the mining industry is to allow mine workers and operators to practice mine processes and demonstrate competency in tasks that will be encountered in day-to-day mining operations at mine sites. It is anticipated that providing easy access to virtual environment systems will facilitate the avoidance of high-risk situations through improved knowledge, skills, understanding and decision making. Via virtual environment systems mine workers will also be able to practice infrequent or emergency events and maintain preparedness for such events. Day-to-day mining practices can also be evaluated. The rapid pace of technology innovation and the decreasing cost of simulation hardware and software present a plethora of technology to the uninitiated. This can be confusing. In this paper taxonomy is presented that classifies hardware, what it can display and also content that can be included or displayed on the various computer-based visualisation systems. The taxonomy provides insight into where technology can and may be implemented in the future as virtual environments are a dynamic and evolving technology. The taxonomy should also assist in the decision making process when scoping or selecting technology for a particular purpose.

Water treatment is not æcore businessÆ for mining companies.Just as mineral ores and coals are unique, each requiring detailed characterisation and pilot-testing to determine their optimum beneficiation route, so too are mine waters, each requiring careful assessment to determine the most appropriate treatment. There are many cases of æregret capitalÆ expenditure, whereby mines have installed off-the-shelf equipment only to find it inadequate for their purposes or grossly expensive and labour intensive to operate.Water may be required for potable purposes, ore processing, dust control and/or irrigation. A major driver will frequently be environmental constraints for off-site discharge. Mine water projects can become very complex, and detailed models need to be prepared and optimised to properly consider the raw water sources, the on-site storages, the on-site uses and the off-site discharges, as well as handling the residuals (by-products) of water treatment. By-products may be in the form of concentrated backwash streams or streams of elevated salt content. Careful management of the by-products is required to avoid recontamination of the source water.Regulators often drive mine owners toward reverse osmosis (RO) so that their discharges can be considered as æzero dischargeÆ in terms of potential pollutants. Such decisions need to be based on site-specific information rather than any form of æblanketÆ requirement. An analogy is that many humans like to consume mineral water rather than ænormalÆ tap water. Receiving environments also accommodate or even prefer their æmineralsÆ and so RO is neither warranted nor sustainable in many cases.This paper presents two case studies for operating mine sites, both of which have a significant excess of water requiring environmental discharge. The examples demonstrate a sensible balance between treatment type, environmental constraints, process implementation and residuals management. The iron (Fe) concentration in nickel slag is high, making its recovery and utilisation a hot and challenging topic. In the nickel smelting process, using CaO instead of SiO2 to adjust slag’s composition, and then directly reducing Fe from the output of molten slag is a more feasible method in practice for Fe recovery in nickel slag. The adjustment of slag’s composition in the nickel smelting process will have an impact on the distribution of impurity elements such as Pb, Zn, and As. In this paper, the slag adjustment of nickel smelting process was carried out with the oxygen-enriched topblowing system. The distribution of impurity elements in the smelting products with each composition slag was conducted by using thermodynamic software. Experimental verification was performed with rich oxygen top-blowing, and the distribution characteristics of impurity elements in the smelting products were characterised to explore the differences in mineral phases of impurity elements with each smelting conditions, elucidating the distribution patterns of Pb, Zn, and As in each phase. The results indicate that after slag adjustment, impurity elements are more easily to volatilisation and removal into the gas, reducing their total concentration in slag and matte. In the slag, the existence form of Pb, Zn is changed from silicate to ferrate, and As is changed from arsenate to low-valent arsenic oxide. It is easier to decompose the impurity-containing mineral phase and remove the impurity elements in the subsequent iron extraction process.

The coal mining industry is now faced with new regulatory requirements that limit the discharge of chlorides into receiving streams. To meet these new regulatory standards for treated mine water, a zero liquid waste approach was developed using advanced treatment technologies. The 3.5 million tones per annum Enterprise mine is the newest underground copper mine at Mount Isa in northern Australia. At a depth of up to 2000 metres, it is the hottest and deepest mine in Australia. In situ rock temperatures sometimes exceed 60¦C requiring the installation of substantial amount of refrigeration to provide safe working conditions for mine workers. The latest refrigeration project at the mine, R67, required the design and installation of the worldÆs largest bulk air cooler and AustraliaÆs largest chilled water plant. The plant is mounted on the surface of the mine and provides 25 MW of refrigeration to cool some 580 kg/sec of ambient air to 11.4¦C. This is equivalent to the production of 6300 tonnes of ice per day. The plant was designed for high availability, as any downtime would result in substantial production losses to MIM, and also had the potential to quickly result in unsafe levels of heat stress within the underground workplaces. The bulk air cooler has been designed for a capacity of 34 MW(R), the expected ultimate carrying capacity of the 7 m vertical intake shaft. Being located well inside the tropics, technical issues such as control of thermal pulldown required special consideration. Also, the bulk air cooler had to be designed to handle whatever demand for fresh air was imposed by the mine below, with over 100 per cent variations in airflow expected, and without loss of thermal efficiency. A substantial program of risk assessment and HAZOP studies was used to protect underground miners from leaks of ammonia into the air or water circuits. Fully automatic control systems result in a totally unmanned plant that is supervised remotely. To improve efficiency, the plant is controlled by the outlet air temperature from the bulk air cooler û the first in the world to be controlled in this fashion. Engineering solutions to address environmental considerations were incorporated at the design stage through features such as the use of ammonia (a greenhouse-friendly gas) as the refrigerant, zero atmospheric discharge and a wastewater collection and re-use system.

An investigation was carried out at Diavik Diamond Mines Inc (DDMI) to identify and quantify the mechanisms through which ammonium nitrate (AN) was entering the mine discharge water. The goal was to develop and complete an investigation of the potential AN loss mechanisms in order to assess their contribution to ammonia in the mine water system. The initial phase of the project involved the collection and analysis of blasting and water quality data that were used to determine the mechanisms by which the ammonia enters the mine water system and to establish a baseline data set for comparison with results from future trials designed to reduce AN loss. Three potential options for reducing AN loss were identified through the first phase of the project. The second phase of the project involved conducting a series of monitored trials with changes made to the drilling and blasting process. The results of these trials were compared to the baseline data set to determine if the changes introduced for the trials had reduced AN losses while producing satisfactory blast results. This paper describes the process for the collection of the baseline data, provides an analysis of the resulting data, discusses the changes made to blasting operations in order to minimise AN loss and describes the results observed subsequent to these changes.

The Athena gold deposit was discovered in 2007 by Gold Fields Australia Ltd, at the St Ives Gold Mine, 35 km southeast of Kambalda, Western Australia. Gold anomalism was identified in sheared Paringa Basalt as a result of a regional scale aircore drilling program, in association with geophysics. In the 18 months following discovery, the deposit was intensely drilled and by June 2009, it was announced that the Athena deposit contained an ore reserve of 1.7 Mt @ 5.6 g/t for 316 koz. This was followed by a feasibility study, and as a result mine development commenced in November 2009.The Athena mineralisation is hosted in a discrete, north-south striking, steep to moderately dipping shear zone within the southwest dipping Paringa Basalt. Vein intensity has a strong correlation to grade and vein type varies from early thin quartz-albite-sulfide (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) shear parallel veins to strong brecciation and irregular veining with quartz-albite-actinolite-biotite-pyrrhotite infill. The geology preproduction process developed at the Argo mine was refined and improved following a business improvement project. The aim of the process is to construct detailed geological interpretations prior to development allowing informed mining decisions to be made. The process delivers significant cost savings and revenue enhancements.The development of macroscopic classification scheme was critical to determine ore or waste in the early phases of mining. The Style of Deformation, Alteration and Veining (SAV) Code was the result, and has been enhanced as greater geological knowledge is gained over time.

"A key component of any geometallurgical investigation involves being able to predict element or mineral recoveries from simplified input data such as bulk chemistry and/or mineralogy. This relies on the metallurgist having access to accurate information regarding the chemistry of the ore and gangue minerals as well as the likely impact on processing/extraction caused by the impurities (present either as gangue or as substitutional impurities). In this study the chemical properties of two commercially important uranium minerals, brannerite (U4+Ti2O6), and uraninite (U4+O2), were characterised using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA). Significant levels of impurities were present in both samples with the uranium minerals deviating significantly from their ideal chemical formulae. Differences in chemistry were due to: cationic substitution decay of the uranium isotopes into radiogenic lead and other daughter products mixed uranium oxidation states post-depositional alteration.As well, the brannerite sample showed evidence of significant radiation-induced metamictisation. Leach tests to measure the ease of extraction of uranium from both samples were conducted over a wide range of conditions (temperature, acid concentration and oxidant concentration). For uraninite, the lower U dissolution rates observed in the natural sample compared to a synthetic UO2 sample were directly attributed to the presence of impurities. For brannerite, significant metamictisation of the natural sample led to enhanced U extraction rates compared to a heat treated fully crystalline sample. This study highlights the importance of detailed mineralogical characterisation studies in any uranium process mineralogy investigation as the compositional, textural and microstructural aspects of the main uranium phases present will likely play an important role in any process to extract uranium.CITATION:Ram, R, Charalambous, F, McMaster, S, Pownceby, M I, Tardio, J and Bhargava, S, 2013. Due to their ability to produce high-resolution images of the subsurface to great depths, seismic surveys provide critical inputs to almost all oil and gas exploration projects. However, with some notable exceptions, seismic surveys have rarely been used in mineral exploration. In the past, this was due to both technical and financial reasons. Significant developments on both fronts mean that seismic surveys can now offer substantial benefits to mineral exploration and mining, and surveys conducted for exploration can provide important data sets for mine planning over the life of a mining project.We present case history data that show that seismic surveys can greatly assist with mapping the 3D distribution of lithologies and alteration and, in favourable circumstances, directly detect mineralisation in and around mineral systems. As a result of their high spatial sampling density, seismic surveys are also highly effective at mapping structures that can remain undetected or poorly characterised by drilling alone. These structures may host or provide important vectors to mineralisation. They can also be particularly important when planning shafts, raise bores, declines, stopes and open pit walls. The design of excavations in rock must, implicitly or explicitly take into consideration the influence of small- and large-scale geological structures. For most sites the complexity of a fractured rock mass is best captured using a 3D fracture system model based on field data. A discrete fracture network (DFN) approach involves stochastic modelling of the ‘smaller scale’, nondeterministic structures. For slope stability or tunnelling projects DFN modelling provides a valuable geotechnical tool for characterisation of a rock mass and identification of likely failure mechanisms.This paper presents a suite of the DFN modelling undertaken for the design of a large open pit in Australia. The proposed pit is to encounter a 160?m thick, high strength, sheared shale unit, which overlies a crystalline basement. DFN modelling was undertaken separately for both the shale and basement units. While the model inputs and development for each unit are briefly presented, the focus of this paper is on the various applications of the DFN modelling.A key advantage of the DFN approach for design studies is its probabilistic application to structural analyses and results. Multiple realisations of the same model were generated for both the shale and basement units, with the stability analysis carried out on each iteration. The generation of a large number of DFN models and analyses allow assessment of wedge volume, factor of safety and proportion of unstable slope for a range of conditions. The DFN modelling at the case study site was also utilised for a number of other purposes. For example, investigation of likely fault lengths in the shale unit and combined rock mass and defect failure. Laboratory flotation tests on fresh cyclone overflow samples are a useful tool to troubleshoot and indeed to improve plant performance; however, reproducibility between laboratory flotation test and plant performance is important for interpretation of the laboratory tests and hence their usefulness. Chemical reproducibility can be achieved with the addition of the required reagents; however, reproducing the physics of forces and energy in a 5 L cell compared to a 50 000 L plant cell or a 500 000 L plant cell is not generally studied or discussed. For some tests such as collector evaluation the physics of the flotation process may not be critical, but for some evaluations in the laboratory, it can be important.All flotation plants suffer from losses of valuable <20 µm mineral. Selective mineral aggregation has long been recommended to improve the poor flotation recovery of <20 µm sulfide minerals; however, successfully testing any type of selective sulfide mineral aggregation’s effect on flotation recovery in the laboratory on practical plant samples requires reproducing plant cell physics. The energy input per litre and the forces in a laboratory cell are vastly different to a plant cell. Reproducibility between laboratory and plant tests requires that these differences be minimised. The Louvicourt Mine is located 600 km north of Montreal in the province of Quebec, Canada. The owners are Aur Resources Inc (30 per cent), mine operator, Novicourt Inc (45 per cent) and Teck Corporation (25 per cent). It is an underground mechanised operation with a total work of 290 employees. Since 1994, the mine production is 11 120 456 tonnes at 3.60 per cent Cu, 1.51 per cent Zn, 26.07 g/mt Ag and 0.96 g/mt Au. At a rate of 4300 tonnes per day 365 days per year. Louvicourt Mine is a copper operation since 80 per cent of our revenue is from copper. The mining method is transverse blasthole stoping, mining primary and secondary stopes. The stope dimension is 15 m wide by 30 m high and 10 m to 80 m long for primary stopes. The secondary stopes are limited at 25 m long. Close to 100 000 metres of production drilling per year is required for 115 mm and 165 mm diameter holes. Backfilling is done with pastefill from the start of the operation in 1994. The binder ratio is 4.5 per cent in primary and two per cent in secondary stopes (80 per cent slag and 20 per cent cement). Development requirement to maintain production was 5000 m from 1996, 1997, 1998, 4200 in year 1999, 3200 m in year 2000 and an average of 2500 m in 2001 and 2002. Typical 6.0 m + 4.3 m, 4.9 m + 4.6 m and 4.5 m + 4.6 m headings. In addition more than 1500 metres of development will be excavated in/under paste backfill before 2004. A total of 60 mobile units are required among which for lateral development (three two boom electric hydraulic jumbos û AC Boomer 322, four electric hydraulic roofbolters û Maclean MEM-928 and AC Boltec PL350 and two anfo loader truck û Dux) and for production (four ITH drills û MTI, one electric hydraulic longhole drill û AC Simba H1357, eight LHD û AC-Wagner ST8-B, 1 LHD ST-1000 and two haulage 30 tons trucks û Dux. The 1 January 2002 reserves are 4.1 M tonnes grading 3.1 per cent Cu and 1.9 per cent Zn at an NSR (Net Smelter Revenue) of $US 53. The operating mining costs were at an average of $US 23 from 1996 to year 2000 and $US 25 in 2001. The operating costs ranged from a low of $US 0.41 per pound of copper in 1999 to a high of $US 0.49 per pound of copper in 1998.

On the occasion of the 14th Mill Operators’ Conference and marking 40 years since the first one was held in Mount Isa in 1978, it is fitting to review the history of the Conference and its development over that time.The first 10 Conferences were irregularly held at three to four year intervals, with 9 of these in regional centres of Australasia. It is only since 2012 that the Mill Operators’ Conference has become a regular biennial event, alternating with the MetPlant Conference.The number of people attending the Conference has more than doubled to 470 delegates at the 13th one in 2016. It has outgrown its regional beginnings.Papers presented to the previous Conferences have been analysed according to commodity, country of origin, technology and theme plus the affiliation of the authors to discern any trends that may assist in planning the future events.Suggestions are made as to how the AusIMM might wish to arrange its mineral processing/metallurgical conferences.Recent changes to the structure of the Conference providing a more meaningful experience for the delegates and increasing their interaction and involvement should be vigorously pursued.CITATION:Munro, P D, 2018. Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of the two major iron ore agglomeration processes, sintering and pelletising, using life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The following agglomeration processing routes, with the fuel options shown, were investigated:sintering with combined natural gas/coke breeze or charcoal as fuel, grate-kiln pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel, and straight-grate pelletising with combined natural gas/coke breeze as fuel. Inventory data for each process derived from the literature, and in some instances supplemented by additional simulations and calculations, were used in the study and the environmental impact categories considered were gross energy requirement (GER), global warming potential (GWP) and acidification potential (AP). The results of the study showed that the GER, GWP and AP for a sinter plant are higher than those for a pellet plant for the same amount of metallic iron in the agglomerated products. These results are partly due to higher consumption of solid fuel and flux in the sintering process. However, it should be pointed out that the study only compared substantially fluxed sinters with acid pellets that may require additional flux (and hence potentially more greenhouse gases emissions) to be a balanced blast furnace feedstock. Extending the LCA to the blast furnace process stage was beyond the scope of the current study. Within the sinter plant, the sintering stage itself is the largest contributor to the GER, GWP and AP. In the case of pellet plant, the pellet induration stage is the largest contributor to the various environmental impacts. The GER and GWP of a straight-grate pellet plant are marginally higher than those of a grate-kiln pellet plant due to the higher electrical power required by the straight grate system. The substitution of coke breeze with charcoal in the sintering process results in an increase in GER but a decrease in GWP. However, a substantial proportion of the GER is derived from renewable sources (wood), resulting in a decrease in the non-renewable components of this environmental impact. Given the source of the inventory data and the assumptions and approximations made in carrying out the LCAs, it is emphasised that the results presented in this paper should be considered as indicative rather than as definitive results for the two iron ore agglomeration processing routes considered.
