Paradoxical is the word. The coal industry, despite reach- ing a 22-year high in production (590 million tons), has been tagged as having its back to the wall vis-a-vis its valiant attempts to quench the nation's still unabated craving for coal. What must be even more reassuring to the industry, infected once with rumors of a uranium takeover, is a nation's almost insatiable appetite for electricity. Between 1967 and the summer of 1970, utility stockpiles were being gobbled up, diminishing to 79% of the January 1968 level.

As a result of a changing market pattern for anthracite, there is now an increasing demand for steam size and a decreasing demand for domestic sizes. To help the producer meet this new demand, the authors present the technical aspects of the problem of crushing domestic sizes to steam fineness and size. The market pattern for anthracite coal has changed considerably in recent years. The demand for domestic sizes has been gradually decreasing and the demand for the steam sizes has been increasing. The companies however aim for a maximum production of domestic sizes, since these sizes command premium prices. To meet the market demands, particularly in certain periods of the year, further size reduction of the coarse clean coal is necessary. The present practice of multistage crushing in toothed rolls leads to complicated flow arrangements and is high in cost. Data presented herein indicate that crushers with high reduction ratios could be used with a resulting simplification of crushing flows and an appreciable reduction of capital and operating costs. The different types of crushing equipment investigated included the rotary-type breaker, the jaw crusher, the impactor-type crusher, and the Aerofall mill. CURRENT PRACTICE The standard sizes of anthracite are presented in Table I and market specifications require that any given size be maintained with only a limited amount of oversize and undersize material. The 1958 prices of the various sizes also are presented, so it may be seen that size reduction is only performed when dictated by market demands. At the present time the general practice of crushing anthracite consists of removing the top size and crushing it in a toothed double roll crusher to the next largest size. Consequently, to reduce the domestic egg, stove, and nut sizes to steam sizes of pea, buck, rice, and barley, the original material must be screened to produce the three top sizes and each size must be crushed in three separate rolls to the next largest size. Each crushed product must then be rescreened to remove the oversize for re crush ing. Thus a typical operation would consist of scalping the egg size from a mixture, crushing it to stove size, and rescreening the product. This same cycle would be repeated for the stove and nut sizes requiring three screens and three crushers as well as conveying equipment to handle the crushed products. This results in an expensive series of operations to make a product which sells for a lower price. If the three top sizes are crushed in one operation to the smaller sizes then the yield of steam sizes is low and the production of Nos. 4 and 5 sizes is large. These sizes sell for lower prices than the steam sizes. A typical operation is presented in Fig. 1. From the figure it may be seen that the original cleaned anthracite contains 67.4 pet domestic sizes, 26.4 pct steam sizes, and 6.2 pct fines. After multistage crushing of the domestic to steam sizes the composition of the product is 0.6 pct domestic sizes, 89.6 pct steam sizes, and 9.8 pct fines. I. GENERAL DISTRIBUTIONS APPEARANCE, AND RELATIONS MINING in Butte has seldom encountered covellite in commercial quantities. The notable occurrences, extending vertically and laterally perhaps several hundred feet, presented scattered, bladed lenses of this mineral in a matrix of quartz, pyrite, enargite, bornite, and chalcocite. But under the microscope covellite is seen to be widespread in the Butte ores, though in such small quantity that megascopic examination will not discover it. In early mining operations covellite was found in the Gray Rock vein, a member of the Blue vein system. As described by Sales,1 it persisted as an occasional ore mineral, associated with quartz, pyrite, tetrahedrite, bornite, chalcocite, and minor amounts of sphalerite, from the 700-ft. to the 1,200-ft. level of the East Gray Rock and Diamond mines. It has been pointed out by Stead1 that grains of considerable coarseness may be developed in steels containing from 3 to 5 per cent. of silicon, and in a previous paper2 the present author has shown that under the proper conditions of annealing single grains having an area of 50 sq. cm. may be obtained. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in more detail the conditions promoting the growth of these grains, in the hope that the experiments described may throw some additional light upon the general problem of grain growth in metals. These silicon steels lend themselves particularly' well to such experiments because of the ease with which the change in structure may be followed and because of the fact that the effect of the carbon present is largely obliterated by the high percentage of silicon. This forms a solid solution with the iron, which acts very much like a pure metal. This alloy has been found to have but one critical point, viz., Ar2. This point, determined by Roberts-Austen for Hadfield's 4 per cent. Si alloy, was found to lie at 703" C. Vigouroux3, in working with pure Fe-Si alloys, finds this point to rise from 750" C. for 0.5 per cent. Si to 860" for 6 per cent. alloy, with a flat region in the curve from 3 to 4 per cent. Si. No accurate determination of this point has been undertaken by the present author, but it has been roughly determined to lie between 730" and 750:. In the preliminary experiments, some of which have been described in a previous paper, it was found that practically all of these steels, when annealed to 1,200" C. or higher, showed grains of comparatively large size. These grains varied in size, however, from about 4 sq. mm. to 50 sq. cm. (see Figs. 1 and 2) under the same conditions of anneal, and it was for the purpose of determining the cause of this difference in size that the experiments herein described were undertaken. The application of the camera as an adjunct to topographic mapping began practically with its invention, and it has been employed with varying success since that time. With the exception of the camera to be described, the plate-camera has been universally used in this work, thus giving a projection of the area photographed on a flat surface. From such projections or photographs, by the rules of geometry and of perspective, points defining topographic features and seen from at least two camera-stations may be projected upon a ground-plane—the map.' In 1904 I employed the plate-camera for this purpose in Alaska, but found that the labor necessary to plot the maps, even in a general way, was long and tedious. In 1905 a small Eastman panoramic camera was fitted with spirit-levels, a sight-alidade and a transparent scale, introduced inside the camera to register the degree-points in the sky-line of the film-negative ; also, arrows to indicate the horizon-line. This was, on the whole, successful; but the details in the topography were not brought out in the views with sufficient clearness, aid the photographs were too small. These difficulties were overcome by obtaining a larger and more carefully constructed instrument, which was satisfactorily employed in the field during the year 1906. A panoramic view is made up of an integral number of perspective views upon flat surfaces, and logically is the most accurate and direct means to obtain an impression of a field of * Published by permission of the Director of the U. Economic deposits of barite occur in Missouri in two main districts. The most important, the Southeastern or Washington County district, is in the southeastern part of the state, mostly in Washington County with a small extension into the northeastern part of St. Francois County. Roughly, it embraces nine townships or about 200,000 acres and accounts for from 80 to 90 per cent. of the state production. The Central district, is in the central part of the state, includes most of Morgan and Miller counties, and parts of Camden; Benton, Moniteau and Cole counties. The area embraced is much larger than the Washington County district, but the deposits are more infrequent. The location and general area covered by the two districts is shown in Fig. 1. There is another small area in southern Franklin County but so far its production has been of small consequence. It might be considered as a northward extension of the Washington County field. An, area in the central part of Hickory County has also produced a small amount. The outline of the districts as shown indicates the general area in which deposits have been found. The total area covered by deposits of barite is only a small part of this, as, in the Central district especially, there may be miles of supposedly barren areas between ore-bearing areas of an acre or two in extent. The date when barite was first mined in Missouri cannot be definit stated, but the industry probably dates back to about 1860. The occurrence of barite was known long before this, as it was encountered in the lead mines in Washington County and mentioned by several earlier writers." Missouri is reported as producing 8000 tons in 1882 so it is evident the industry was well under way in the seventies in order to have arrived at this substantial production. By 1893 Missouri production had increased so that it ranked with that of Virginia, then the largest producer it increased until in 1914 Missouri accounted for about 65 per cent. of the total United States output.

First, a definition of a small scale miner is in order. The US Bureau of Mines classifies him as one who produces 360 t/d (400 stpd) of ore or less. In Canada, he would be refered to as a "junior company." Mexico identifies the small scale miner as one whose gross income from operations is less than $880,000 per year. A small surface mine in India employs less than 400 people, and a small underground mine employs less than 150. Peru considers a small scale miner one who produces less than 54 000 t/y (60,000 stpy) of ore. Obviously, the term is relative. What may be a small mine in one country is a medium or large mine in another. This lack of agreement is understandable since small scale mining does not often cross national boundaries. Rather, its effects are felt at the regional and local levels within each nation. Its importance doesn't lie with any huge contribution to the GNP or balance of trade. Instead, its value is as a local employer and as a frontrunner in geologic exploration.

An interesting development of copper blast-furnace construction has been brought about in adapting the blast-furnace to be a "burner" for sulphuric acid making. When the Tennessee Copper Co. first decided to construct an acid-plant, the standard type of brick-top furnace, supported by structural steel, was the only one in use at its plant. All the tests for temperature and strength of gas had been made on these furnaces, and had been satisfactory. When, however, the acid-plant was put on the flue, and the flue had to have a damper put in it to force the gas into that plant, troubles began. The furnaces were fairly tight, and for a few months the work was quite satisfactory. Fig. 1 shows the old type of furnace-top used at the start. It was soon found that this top would not stand the temperatures, particularly when dampered back, as was necessary to force the gas into the Glover towers. The structural steel, of which the furnace skeleton was constructed, warped and twisted so badly that it was not safe to use the furnaccs. This effect is shown by Fig. 2, which is a photograph of old No. 4 furnace, after the brick-work had been removed. It became apparent that a new type of top mas necessary and the engineering force was started on the design of a new furnace-top, with the result that a low top, with brick-lined flues at each end below the feed-floor, leading to the main concrete dust-chamber, was constructed. This furnace, No. 7, is shown in Fig. 3. The charging-doors are made of cast-iron sections, three sections to a door, and three doors to a side. A consolidated porous medium is mathematically modeled by networks of irregularly shaped, interconnected pore channels. Mechanisms are described that form residual saturations during immiscible displacement both by entire pore channels being bypassed and by fluids being isolated by the movement of an interface within individual pore channels. This latter mechanism is shown to depend strongly on pore channel irregularity. Together, these mechanisms provide an explanation for the drainage-imbibition-hysteresis effect. The calculation of steady-state relative permeabilities, based on a pore-size distribution obtained from a Berea sandstone, is described. These relative permeability curves agree qualitatively with curves that are generally accepted to be typical for highly consolidated materials. In situations where interfacial effects predominate over viscous and gravitational effects, the following conclusions are reached. 1. Relative permeability at a given saturation is everywhere independent of flow rate. 2. Relative permeability is independent of viscosity ratio everywhere except at very low values of wetting-phase relative permeability. 3. Irreducible wetting-phase saturation following steady-state drainage decreases with increasing ratio of nonwetting- to wetting-phase viscosity. 4. lrreducible wetting-phase saturation following unsteady-state drainage is lower than fir steady-state drainage. 5. Irreducible nonwetting-phase saturation 101lowing imbibition is independent of viscosity ratio, whether or not the imbibition is carried out under steady- or unsteady-state conditions. Experiments qualithtiveIy verify the conclusions regarding unsteady-state residual wetting-phase saturation. Implications of these conclusions are discussed. INTRODUCTION Natural and artificial porous materials are generally composed of matrix substance brought together in a more or less random manner. This leads to the creation of a network of interconnected pore spaces of highly irregular shape. Since the geometry of such a network is impossible to describe, we can never obtain a complete description of its flow behavior. We can, however, abstract those properties of the porous medium pertinent to the type of flow under consideration, and thus obtain an adequate description of that flow. Thus, the Kozeny-Carmen equation, by considering a porous medium as a bundle of noninterconnecting capillary tubes, provides an adequate description of single-phase flow. With the addition of a saturation-dependent tortuosity parameter in two-phase flow to account for flow path elongation, the Kozeny-Carmen equation has been used to predict relative permeabilities for the displacement of a wetting liquid by a gas. 1-5 It has long been recognized that relative permeability depends not only on saturation but also on saturation history as we11.6,7 Naar and Henderson8 described a mathematical model in which differences between drainage and imbibition behavior are explained in terms of a bypassing mechanism by which oil is trapped during imbibition. Fatt9 proposed a model for a porous medium that consisted of regular networks of cylindrical tubes of randomly distributed radii. From this he calculated the drainage relative permeability curves. Moore and slobod,10 Rose and Witherspoon,11 and Rose and Cleary12 each considered flow in a pore doublet (a parallel arrangement of a small and large diameter cylindrical capillary tube). They concluded that, because of the different rates of flow in each tube, trapping would occur in one of the tubes; the extent of which would depend upon viscosity ratio and capillary pressure. GENERAL GEOLOGY Coal is defined as a combustible rock that had its origin in the accumulation and physical and chemical alteration of vegetation. Coal can be ignited and burned like the wood that was man's earliest fuel, but coal gives more heat than the same amount of wood and has many industrial uses. Unlike wood, coal is not generally found on the surface of the ground but is mined from the solid rock of the earth. Before taking up the occurrence, formation, and the somewhat unique character of coal in the rock sequence, let us briefly consider the general character of all rocks in the crust of the earth. Relatively little is known about the very earliest history of the earth, although a number of logical theories have been developed. Manned exploration of the moon and the rocks being returned to earth will, we hope, provide some answers to questions concerning the earth's origin and history. The period of earth history with which we concern ourselves here begins after great areas of water had evolved on earth and substantial land areas of once molten (igneous) rock existed. Weathering and other processes that attacked the surface of the rocks reduced them to small particles. Water provided by rainfall transported this material, ultimately, to large bodies of water where it was deposited. Thus was initiated the geologic sequence of sedimentary rocks that lie above the once molten igneous rocks. The crust of the earth is not completely stable, and throughout the geologic past portions of the crust have moved laterally and vertically. Even today, many coastal areas are slowly rising or sinking. More sudden earth movements are recognized by the earthquakes they cause. Throughout geologic history, rises in sea level or the sinking of the land areas have many times permitted the oceans to cover much of what are now the areas of the continents. A new theory of work hardening is developed which rests on only a few simple principles and is applicable to a wide variety of materials and dislocation structures. It explains, qualitatively, the general characteristics of the three-stage shear stress-shear strain curve of fcc metals, as well as the most important features connected with easy glide. The value of, the work-hardening coefficient in stage 11, is derived quantitatively, from first principles, and is shown to be insensitive to many changes in detailed dislocation behavior. The low rate at which energy is stored during mechanical working in stage 11, the dependence of slip line length on stress, and the so-called Cottrell-Stokes law are explained. Although the theory is primarily developed for fcc metals and alloys, it is largely applicable also to some other materiuls, and in particular apparently to poly crystalline simple steels in theh linear range of hardening. FOR pure fcc metals and alloys, after many different pretreatments and under a great variety of testing conditions, the well-known three-stage work-hardening curve is commonly observed. Moreover, the work-hardening coefficient in stage 11, 011, bears an almost constant relationship to G, the modulus of rigidity, such that K = G/Brr" = 300, within a factor of about 2 either way. The very fact that the three-stage curve and the value of K are so very persistent, can hardly be understood except on the assumption that some quite simple phenomena are responsible. In this light all available theories of work hardening must be judged unsatisfactory: Each of them is based on some quite specific dislocation model, while it is known that metals with similar values of K may have widely different dislocation structures, for example, dislocation tangles in the case of pure fcc metals, and piled-up groups of dislocations in a-brasstype alloys. Thus, while a particular theory might conceivably represent a special case with a reasonable degree of accuracy, it cannot possibly have illuminated the underlying principle. Another severe criticism applying to the presently most widely discussed theories is that they employ empirical or even quite unexplained parameters in order to arrive at a numerical value of K. This indicates that some vital aspect of the work-hardening process has remained unexplained. In the present paper, a new theory of work-hardening is developed which does not suffer from the above shortcomings. It is derived from first principles, and is founded on the realization that the underlying causes for the three-stage work-harden- ing curve and for the persistence of the numerical value of O,, must be few and simple. As a first step it is shown herein that the experimental oklservations on "easy glide" can be explained on the assumption that in this stage dislocations multiply, beginning in a number of restricted area:;, and from there penetrate into crystal regions still substantially free of glide dislocations until a quasi-uniform dislocation distribution has been established. During "easy glide", the resistance to the movement of the foremost dislocations, advancing into still largely a dislocation-free regions, is believed to control the flow stress. This resistance is determined by various factors, among them the reaction of the dislocations against bowing-out into loops, which is due to their line tension. Without such bowing-out no dislocation multiplication would occur, but the corresponding contribution to the flow stress stays practically constant all through stage I. According to the present theory, stage TI begins as soon as there are no more areas left into which newly formed dislocations have not yet penetrated, i.e., as soon :is a quasi-uniform dislocation density has been attaned. Regardless of how, in detail, the dislocations should happen to be arranged at the end of "easy glide", whether in pileups or tangles, on one glide system or on several, the stress necessary to overcome the line tension of the segments must now increase, because the dislocation density increiises while the average free dislocation length decreases. It is argued that all other contributions to the flow stress stay at about the same level as in stage I, and that the said increase in the stress necessary to bow out dislocation segments into loops is responsible for the major part of work hardening in stage 11. Stage TII of the stress-strain curve is explained by largely follouing the ideas of Seeger and his co-workers; however, it is pointed out that the start of stage m may on occasion indicate the onset of "conservative climb" instead of cross slip. Indirect evidence indicates that linear work hardening persists even under the profuse action of cross slip, but at a lower rate. Only when, in addition to cross slip, climb operates extensively, does the work-hardening rat,. drop sharply, ultimately down to zero. BRIEF SURVEY OF EXPERIMENTAL EVIDENCE The stress-strain curve of crystals of many different substances are qualitatively similar. No significant permanent plastic deformation takes place below the so-called "critical resolved shear stress". IMPORTANCE OF ROCK DRILLING. IT has been estimated that the value of the mineral products of the United States is about $2,000,000,000 a year; that about $25,000,000 is expended. annually for explosives and that about double this sum is paid in wages where blasting is done. The value of the mineral products does not adequately express the importance of the industry involved in the excavation of rock and ore because of the enormous sums of money expended in tunnel driving, in quarries, and in open-cut excavation generally. We know that the Catskill Aqueduct in the neighborhood of New York, which is now nearing completion, has cost some $165,000,000 and that about one-third of this may be rated as rock excavation. These illustrations are given in order to call attention to the great importance of an industry the extension and development of which in our industrial life depend so much upon the economics of rock drilling. Reference has been made to the new Catskill Aqueduct. There are three aqueducts leading into New York, each built at periods separated by some 20 years of time. 'The first one, known as the Old Aqueduct, conveys the waters of the Croton river to New York City in a manner which reminds one of the old Roman aqueducts, the ruins of which are still in evidence. The engineers who laid out these old conduits sought to direct their lines around the hills and into the valleys, at all times avoiding the rock. When it was necessary to cross a river or a deep ravine, a bridge or causeway was constructed. High Bridge, over the Harlem river, is an arched masonry viaduct differing in no essential features from the aqueducts of the Romans. When the second Croton Aqueduct was built, about the year 1890, the art of drilling rock had been so far perfected, and the use of explosives, through the invention of dynamite, had become ,so general, that this waterway was planned and executed on straight lines, following rather than avoiding the rock. The second Croton Aqueduct is a tunnel through rock, about 32 miles in length; material gneiss, almost as hard as granite. Its construction was made practicable by sinking

The mode of high-temperature tertiary creep of 523-0 aluminum alloy was found to be strongly stress dependent. The occurrence of necking and/or fissures during tertiary creep exhibited a sequence with varying stress, wherein fissures with no necking occur at a minimum stress and necking with no fissures occur at a maximum stress. At an intermediate stress, tertiary creep begins without necking but with fissures in a region just beneath the external surface, followed by necking and the development of fissures along the axis of the specimen. The results are interpreted in terms of grain boundary gliding and the hydrostatic stresses produced by restraints to grain boundary gliding. THERE appear to be two possible reasons for the existence of a period of accelerating elongation prior to rupture during high-temperature creep in metals; namely, 1) a change in the structure of the metal itself, leading to a change in its response to loading, and 2) a reduction in the cross section of the metal resulting in a higher unit loading. Howe,' by annealing and retesting broken low-temperature creep specimens, found that irreparable damage is done once a metal is subjected to creep. Andrade2 first pointed out the association between the reduction in cross section and the increase in creep rate. The present research was designed to investigate both of these factors by retesting specimens machined from material which had been subjected to high-temperature creep testing short of rupture. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD An aluminum alloy, 52s-0, was selected for these studies because it is constitutionally simple, is strong enough to be relatively insensitive to mechanical damage during machining,3 and undergoes accelerating creep in a convenient temperature range. This alloy is hardened by 2.6 wt pct Mg in solid solution and is not subject to overaging effects; it has a very small quantity of an insoluble impurity phase, Mg2Si, finely dispersed throughout its micro-structure. Creep specimens, similar in design to ASTM 0.252-in. tensile specimens, were machined from 3/4-in. round stock and the surfaces were electro-polished. A 24-hr anneal at 500°C was then applied to stabilize the grain size to an average diameier of 0.27 mm. Subsequent heating for as long as 700 hr at the intended test temperatures produced no change in the tensile properties, indicating a well-stabilized state of the material. Corresponding to each of the typical testing conditions listed in Table I, one creep specimen was tested to destruction and this test was employed as a guide in the selection of times for subsequent tests. Duplicate creep tests were then run to various points along the creep curve to produce specimens which were used to determine changes in mechanical properties and microstructures. The latter were examined at the midsections of the specimens. Other specimens were tested to various stages of tertiary creep, after which they were remachined to new cylindrical test specimens, electropolished and re-tested in creep. RESULTS The major findings of this investigation may be illustrated by a comparison of the results of three sets of creep tests. These were run at 400°C at three stress levels, namely 750, 1000, and 1500 psi. In presenting these results in Figs. 1, 5, and 8, the creep curves are given in pairs: That curve of each pair which is drawn through filled circles corresponds to the initial test, and the curve drawn through open circles (and designated by - R) represents the result of retesting the same specimen after machining to a new cylindrical surface. The load was readjusted to the original unit stress at the beginning of each retest.

THE oil-bearing districts of Poland are found on the slopes of the Carpathian Mountains. The oil belt extends from Gorlice southeast to Stanislawow. It is approximately 250 miles long and 30 miles wide, and comprises four geological districts: the western, or Gorlice district; next, to the east, the Krosno district; the Boryslaw district; and, in the extreme southeast, the Stanislawow district. The amount of petroleum produced in Poland from the beginning of the oil industry scarcely totals 26,000,000 metric tons, or 15 per cent. of the estimated supply. Of this amount, 18,000,000 tons have been taken from the fields of Boryslaw within 25 years; and only about 8,000,000 tons from all other fields within a period twice as long, although some of these other fields represent just as good possibilities as did Boryslaw at the beginning of its development. The Polish oil industry was severely stricken by the war. The retreating Russian armies, in 1915, destroyed a large number, of the existing oil wells, nor was the post-war period favorable for the development of this industry;; the money and credit stringency interfered with the expansion of drilling. But since 1921 there has. been a slow steady increase in production and there is now every reason to believe that conditions in the industry will improve. In fact, an increase in new drillings has been reported for the current year. The production of crude oil in Poland, in 1913, amounted to 1,113,668 metric tons. In 1914, the production declined- to 655,600 metric tons. In 1921, the production was 705,596 tons; in 1922, 712,428 tons, and in 1923, 737,182 tons; or more than 5,000,000 bbl. But the fields have a much greater potential output, which could be realized were the capital available for prospecting and new drilling. The principal producing, and at present most exploited, fields are around Boryslaw and Schodnica. These fields were developed rapidly for in the first year of their modern exploitation the wells were gushers of moderate depth. However, as a result of heavy drilling, the shallow folds have been exhausted and oil can be reached now only by deep drilling. Wells of almost 5600 ft. have been drilled in Boryslaw. Because of these drilling conditions, a large number of engineers and workmen specially skilled in deep drilling are to be found in this field.

The minerals barite (BaSO4-barium sulfate) and witherite (BaCO3-barium carbonate) are the chief commercial sources of the element barium and its compounds whose many uses are nearly hidden among the technical complexities of modern industrial processes and products. Barite, the major ore mineral, is extremely vital to the petroleum industry which in 1980 consumed at least 90% of the world's production of 8.8 million tons as a major ingredient of the heavy fluid, called mud, that is circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The remaining 10% of the barite production was consumed chiefly in the manufacture of barium chemicals and glass and as a pigment, filler, and extender. Barite occurs throughout much of the world and is available from three major geologic types of deposits-vein and cavity filling, residual, and bedded-in sufficient quantity at competitive prices to meet current demands. The world's demand for barite is expected to increase, and geologic circumstances are favorable for the discovery of new deposits of commercial value. Witherite is much less common and abundant than barite, although it is more desirable in many ways as a raw material for the production of barium chemicals. The United States has not produced witherite since about 1950; England is currently the chief producer of witherite. End Uses Most of the world's barite production since 1926 has been used as a weighting agent for the muds circulated in rotary drilling of oil and gas wells. The muds fundamentally are mixtures of water, clay, and barite in different proportions that vary according to local reservoir conditions. Muds with a specific gravity as great as 2.5 are used. The mud is pumped down the hollow drill stem, passes through the bit at the bottom of the hole, and rises to the surface in the space between the drill stem and the wall of the hole. In the course of this circulation the drill bit is cooled, cuttings are removed, the drill stem is lubricated, the walls of the hole are sealed, and the hydrostatic head of the column of weighted fluid helps to confine high oil and gas pressures. The latter feature aids in prevention of gushers, thus reducing both environmental pollution and waste of oil and gas resources as well as conserving the natural reservoir pressure for greater production and rate of recovery of the products contained in the rocks. Barite is particularly well suited for drilling mud because it is clean, easy to handle, soft (nonabrasive), heavy, virtually inert chemically, and relatively inexpensive compared to many other available heavy materials. Barite is used in the manufacture of glass in continuous tanks. The addition of barite homogenizes the melt and gives greater brilliance and clarity to the finished glass. Ground barite, both unbleached and bleached by sulfuric acid, is a common industrial filler, extender, and weighting agent. The rubber industry is a major consumer of barite as a filler. Barite also is added to bristolboard, heavy printing paper, playing cards, rope finishes, brake linings, clutch facings, plastics, and linoleum, to name but a few uses. Bleached barite has long been an extender in white lead paint because of its weight. The low index of refraction of barite, however, makes its ability to cover marks poorer than some other substances, but its low capacity for absorption of oil is a good feature. Off-color or unbleached barite can be used as a filler in colored paints. In the construction industry, some lump barite is used in concrete aggregate to weigh down pipelines buried in marshy areas and to shield nuclear reactors. Because barite absorbs gamma radiation well, its use reduces the amount of expensive lead shielding otherwise

Iron oxide (FeO) plays an extremely important part in the manufacture of iron and steel. In the three major processes- blast-furnace, open-hearth, and Bessemer converter-iron oxide is the chemically predominant compound and controls to a large ex- tent the operation of the furnaces and the composition and quality of their respective products. In order to emphasize the importance of iron oxide in each process, they will be considered individually in some detail. THE OPEN-HEARTH FURNACE. Iron oxide is introduced into the open-hearth furnace in four ways : 1. The scrap charged into the open hearth is oxidized by the furnace gases, the amount of oxide formed depending primarily on the amount and type of scrap charged. It has been found' that with large scrap, 1.7 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, whereas with scrap of medium size about 5.3 Ib. of FeO is formed per 100 Ib. of scrap charged, when the period between the charging of the scrap and the addition of hot metal is 3 hours. 2. Investigations were conducted at two underground locations, foreman's room and 5702 area, of the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mining installation, Ambrosia Lake, New Mexico. The rock environment is stratified sandstone. Pressures were varied from minus 0.4 an Hg to plus 3.8 cm Hg with respect to barometric pressure, and were maintained for periods ranging from several hours to 21 days. One cm Hg overpressure (-1.5% of normal barometric pressure) produced a 20-fold decrease in Rn flux into the foreman's room as compared to the Rn flux observed during dilution ventilation. The 5702 area experienced a 5-fold decrease in Rn flux for a similar overpressure. During 21 days of continuous 1 cm Hg overpressure in the 5702 area this reduced Rn flux was maintained. The smaller reduction in flux for the 5702 area results in part from the proximity of the foreman's room to a non-pressured area and the presence of an impermeable shale lens overlying the ceiling of the 5702 area. A 0.4 cm Hg underpressure of the 5702 area increased the Rn flux into the area by 3-fold over the non-pressured value. A barometric pressure influence on Rn flux into the mine and on air Rn concentrations in non-pressurd areas of the mine was measured. A falling barometric pressure causes an increase in the flux of interstitial gas into the mine; a rising barometric pressure decreases this flux. These effects are not seen in overpressured mine areas. Radon concentrations in rock interstices show, during overpressure, decreases of all locations monitored except in the immediate vicinity of the shale lens above the 5702 area ceiling. These reductions are the result of air flowing from the mine into the rock interstices under the influence of the pressure gradient induced by the overpressure. The relative humidity of the 5702 area was reduced after 2 days of 1 cm Hg overpressure from a pre-overpressure value of 96% to 81%. The control of harmful or noisesome gases which emanate into underground mining areas from surrounding rocks is often a costly necessity. In uranium (U) mines this problem is presented by the high interstitial concentrations of radon-222 (Rn), a radioactive noble gas of 3.82-day half-period, formed in the decay scheme of U238, and the relative ease with which this noble gas diffuses from its parent rock into the interstices of the rock and then to a working area. Long-term exposure to moderate concentrations of Rn (3000 µµc per 1) and its short-lived alpha-ray emitting daughter products, RaA (Po218) and RaC (po214), has been found to result in an increased incidence of bronchial carcinomaa2 The acceptable limit of Rn daughter products in a mine atmosphere is presently set at a concentration of short-lived radon daughters which would be in equilibrium with 100 ppc of Rn per 1 of air. Ventilation of mines is conventionally accomplished by continuously diluting the mine air with fresh air brought in by fan or natural convection from above ground surface. The diluted air is allowed to vent freely to the atmosphere. This process does nothing to retard the rate at which gases (including Rn) diffuse into the mine from surrounding rock. It merely reduces the concentrations of these gases within the mine. It is suggested that in a sufficiently permeable rock environment a slight pressurization of the mine air may induce air flow from the mine into the interstices of rock surrounding the mine. The convective flow of comparatively fresh air will reduce the concentration and the concentration gradient of undesirable gases in the rock interstices adjacent to the mine. Radon will diffuse counter-current to this convective flow at a rate proportional to its concentration gradient. In time, a steady state of convection and counter diffusion will be established. The Rn flux into the mine will never be reduced to zero, and will only asymptotically approach zero as the overpressure (and hence the convective velocity of purging air) approaches infinity. During 1963 and 1964, an investigation into the effect which such applied pressures have upon the Rn characteristics of a mine atmosphere was conducted at the Kermac Nuclear Fuels Corp. uranium mines, Ambrosia Lake (near Grants), New Mexico.

This paper describes briefly the topography and geology of the region where the mica-bearing pegmatites are found and discusses prospecting, the quality of the mica, its preparation, and evaluation of the deposits. Muscovite mica occurs in a number of widely separated localities in Brazil, but production has come largely from deposits in the southeastern and eastern part of the State of Minas Gerais (Fig. I). There the deposits form a discontinuous zone, which starts at a point go km. north of the city of Rio de Janeiro and extends north for some 500 km., roughly parallel to the coast. A maximum width of 180 km. is reached along the Rio Doce. To the west in Minas Gerais, and extending east into the states of Espirito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, the mica zone proper is fringed by areas in which there are scattered occurrences of mica-bearing pegmatites. A few of these outlying deposits have produced commercial mica, but most of them are unimportant. To the southwest, in the State of Sao Paulo, there are a number of mines, which at one time produced a very considerable amount of sheet mica, largely as a byproduct of kaolin mining. These deposits, and a few others lying between them and the main productive areas to the northeast, appear to be the southwestern continuation of the strong Minas Gerais mica zone. In the vicinity of Conquista, just north of the Minas Gerais boundary in the State of Bahia, and still farther north, near Jacobina, there are several known mica deposits. Their location indicates that they may be the northern continuation of the main mica zone. The major part of Brazilian mica production has come from four areas within the mica zone proper; from north to south, Governador Valadares, Raul Soares, Espera Feliz, and Muriaé.. The first is go km. from north to south and reaches a maximum width of 180 km. The Raul Soares area extends 135 km. from northeast to southwest, and in places is 80 km. wide. The Espera Feliz area is 100 km. from north to south, and reaches a width of 35 km. The Muriai. area extends 150 km. from northeast to southwest and its width reaches 40 kilometers. Between the known productive areas, and in the areas directly to the southwest and to the north of them, little mica has been produced. These gaps, as well as certain irregularities in the outline of the mica zone itself, are to be ascribed either to lack of prospecting or to conditions preventing the discovery of mica, rather than to its nonexistence. Elsewhere in Brazil mica has been reported from eastern Goiaz, Ceará, Pernambuco, Rio Grande do Sul, Matto Grosso, and Amazonas. Production from these sources is negligible at present. Because of the inferior quality of the mica from the more accessible of these localities, and the operational difficulties occasioned by the remoteness of others, it is improbable that they will become important producers for some time to come.
