Liquid slags of the system SiO2-Ca0-MgO-A1~03 were equilibrated with liquid Fe-Si-C alloys in graphite or Sic crucibles at 1600°C in pure CO gas at atmospheric pressure, and the silicon content of both phases determined. Ternary slugs of the systern SiO2-CaO-A12O3 were also studied at 1550°C. The silicon content of the metal phase saturated with both graphite and SIC is 22.0pct at 1550°C and In the iron blast furnace, as in nearly all carbon-reduction processes, some silicon is transferred from slag to metal. The importance of this reaction is enhanced by its indirect effect on the transfer of sulfur from metal to slag, and this has stimulated a comprehensive research program on the equilibrium distribution of silicon between slag and metal. Earlier studies'-3 of this same problem provided data for calculation of the thermodynamic activities4 of the components in SiO,-CaO-A1,O3 slags. 22.4 pct at 1600°C. The temperature at which the phases cristobalite, gvaphite, $ SiC, liquid slag, Fe-Si-C alloy, and CO gas at 1 atm pressure can coexist in equilibrium was found to be 1533°C. The results agree well with earlier studies. They are shown graphically as lines of constant silicon cmtent in the metal which also are lines of constant SiO, activity in the slag.

Studies of reservoir behavior of 12 Smackover limestone oil and condensate pools are presented. Buckner, Midway, McKamie, Magnolia, Mt. Holly, Schuler (Reynolds) and Village are treated in considerable detail and subjected to analysis with an electrical device for analyzing reservoir behavior. Results and comparisons of these analyses are presented. In addition to these reservoir-behavior studies, an attempt is made to assemble trans-missibility and storage data on the Smackover limestone formation from cores and logs taken in dry holes and producers. This together with the behavior of individual reservoirs leads to a better understanding of the formation as a porous aquifer. The ultimate purpose of this type of study is to improve predictions concerning the future behavior of these pools in such a system. Predictions are presented for several pools. Introduction In 1937 the Phillips Petroleum Co. drilled its J. D. Reynolds No. I to the Smackover limestone formation at Snow Hill, Arkansas. This well found oil in the porous, permeable, upper part of the Smackover, thereafter referred to as the Reynolds lime. Since then, six oil pools and six condensate pools have been discovered in the Reynolds lime, and more than 75 dry holes have explored parts of this formation. By the first of 1943, 44 million barrels of oil and 83 billion cubic feet of gas had been withdrawn from the various reservoirs. The original reserves estimated by the Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission were 342 million barrels of oil and rzoo billion cubic feet of gas. So far all of the production has been from anticlinal structures, most of which are asymmetric and have their axes roughly perpendicular to the dip of the formation top. This is indicated in Fig. I, which shows the pools, dry holes drilled, and contours on top of the Smackover.' These pools are of particular interest for reservoir-behavior studies because the production and drilling has been controlled, and in most cases the records of reservoir data are complete. In addition to the excellent production and pressure information available, more than one half of the wells drilled were cored and all of them were electrically logged. All of the pools show evidence of water drive. While this paper is in a sense a collection of reservoir-behavior studies for several different pools, there has been an attempt to go one step further and to show the importance of the iormation as a porous continuum or a single aquifer in which the withdrawals of fluids from any pool has an important effect on the behavior of all of the pools. An effort will be made to show that the water drives of these pools are dependent upon a much larger area of the Smackover limestone than that occupied by the petroleum accumulations.

THE purpose of this paper is to direct attention to the lower part of the austenite transformation diagram, or TTT curves, where considerable uncertainty still exists as to the blending of the bainite and martensite reactions. The dissimilarities between these two low temperature trans- formations have been summarized recently by Troiano and Greninger.1 Of particular importance to the present work is the fact that martensite formation, unlike bainite formation, is not suppressed by the fastest quenching rates attainable. However, most of the investigations in this direction have been concerned primarily with the start of the martensite transformation [(M,)] during cooling, rather than with the quantitative aspects of the subsequent reaction on either further cooling or isothermal holding. Several years ago, Cohen2 suggested a form of transformation diagram which reconciled, at least schematically, the isothermal characteristics of the bainite transformation with the insuppressible nature of the martensite transfoi mation. In essence, the diagram consisted of a family of horizontal lines (representing the progress of the austenite-martensite reaction during quenching) which were interrupted in point of time by the bainite family of C-curves extending down from higher temperatures. This picture received later support by metallographic3 and dilatmetric4,5 studies, but the techniques employed were not sufficiently critical to substantiate some of the details. Elmendorf6 and Grange and Steward7 have shown that the Greninger-Troiano metallographic techniques may be used not only for [M,] determinations, but for studying the course of further austenite decomposition. In fact, the latter investigators have observed the amount of martensite formed as a function of temperature below [M,] in fourteen commercial steels. In the present paper, the Greninger- Troiano technique has been combined with the lineal method of Howard and Cohen9 to provide a unique, quantitative treatment of the austenite-martensite reaction. Furthermore, isothermal transformations have been similarly measured on holding at temperatures above and below M,, thus permitting a fairly detailed presentation of the lower part of the conventional austenite transformation diagram. EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Materials The steels, listed in Table I, were selected for study because they exhibit a satisfactory range of M, temperatures and have not received as much attention as the lower carbon grades. The present paper is a progress report on an investigation of the physical factors of oil and gas and especially of their sands,' such as pore space, size of pores or permeability, retentivity, viscosity of the oil, temperature, pressure, thickness and area of the pay sand, water relations, and capillarity. The purpose is to determine as many of these physical factors as possible, and to ascertain the relations existing, directly or indirectly, between these physical factors and the production of oil and gas. As yet only pore space2 and size of grains of pay sands have been investigated, although an apparatus has been designed to determine the permeability of a sand to oil, water, or gas under definite drops of pressure between the entrance face and exit face of the sample. Messrs. E. W. Shaw, R. Van A. Mills, D. Dale Condit, G. B. Richardson, G. C. Matson, and C. H. Wegemann collected the samples upon which the physical determinations were made. Acknowledgment is made to my colleagues of the United States Geological Survey for many suggestions and criticisms; to Mr. Mills for the production data given of the oil wells from which some of the samples were collected; to Mr. A. THIS paper describes the result of an investigation of the production of thin alloyed layers on a thicker substrate of pure germanium as one step in the manufacture of transistors.' The technique of alloying materials with semiconductors is a means of introducing small amounts of impurity elements in the alloyed regions of the crystal lattice of the semiconductor, the presence of which make possible the junction type transistor.2 Impurity elements are added which will produce regions having differing electrical resistivities and means of carrying current. Impurities are of two types: those which produce an excess of electrons (negative or n-type), and those which produce a deficiency of electrons (positive or p-type) in comparison to the pure semiconductor. The boundary between two such regions is designated a p-n junction. Elements in Group V of the periodic table, having five valence electrons, give rise to an excess of electrons when present substitutionally in the semiconductor lattice (usually germanium or silicon from Group IV). Similarly, elements in Group III create a deficiency of electrons. EARTH-REISTIVITY measurements are often of service in obtaining information regarding geological formations, particularly when applied to structural problems. In such problems the masses of the various bodies are large, and have a corresponding effect on the average resistivity of the soil. Much work has been done using such measurements, but in general the method of interpretation employed is empirical. Since certain simple cases can be investigated mathematically, it appears to be quite sound to endeavor to apply the mathematical solutions to the practical results, in order to deduce from the latter such unknown quantities as depth. This paper deals with such a method of interpretation for the simple case of a single horizontal stratum. The activities of nickel in liquid iron-nickel solutions containing from 10 to 90 at. pct Ni were measured over the temperature range .1510° to 1600°C. A special function was devised whereby activities can be computed by a graphical integration using the results of chemical analyses on the vapor phase alone. The liquid solutions studied exhibit negative deviation from Raoult's law, but they approach ideality as the temperature is raised from 1510° to 1600°C. The maximum heat of solution is less than -8.0 kcal per mole. The entropy of solution is less than —2.5 kcal per mole deg at 1510°C, and changes negligibly as the temperature is raised. The liquid iron-nickel solutions do not follow regular solution behavior. THE activities of the components of a liquid alloy system can be determined in favorable cases from the partial pressure of the vapor in equilibrium with the liquid alloy.' INTRODUCTION In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. In a previous paper,l a method was suggested for determining the depth to a bed in the simple case of a uniform overlying layer of constant thickness. The main purpose of the present paper is to show how a slight modification of that method has been used to interpret specific data obtained in the upper peninsula of Michigan by the staff of the Depart- ment of Mathematics and Physics of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The method of Tagg2 has also been used on the same data, thus furnishing a comparison of the two methods, as well as a method of using the two methods jointly. The method of measuring the apparent resistivity is that suggested by Wenner,3 and illustrated in Fig. 1. A current I enters the earth at the positive pole C and leaves it at the negative pole D. The potential V of the high electrode A, with respect to the low electrode B is measured by suitable means. The four nomograms presented in this article were designed to simplify and make more rapid the calculations connected with the compression and transmission of air. The formulae involved are rather complicated, but the graphic solutions are simple; their use requires an ability to follow explicit directions and to interpolate values on a logarithmic sca1e. † For the sake of convenience, the nomograms will be divided into two classes, and the purpose and accuracy of each will be discussed. Power foR CompREssion It is frequently desirable to determine the horsepower necessary to compress a given amount of free air from atmospheric pressure to a certain final pressure. The nomograms in Fig. 1 and 2 present a rapid method of calculating the horsepower required to compress 1 cu. ft. of free air per minute by single or two-stage compression. The general formula for the horsepower required to compress air adiabatically is: S X 144 PVn [(P')n-1/sn -1 (1) where: P = absolute atmospheric pressure at compressor, in pounds per square inch. The data for diffusion in dilute binary alloys with the Solvents Ag, Cu, Ni, Fe. Al. and Pb hare been correlated as a function of atomic volume. Linear equations of the form: Q = b - a log V are obtained with constants "a" and "b" ciuirac-teristic of each solvent metal. In most cases. 3-d In recent years measurements of diffusion coefficients in solid binary alloys. using small concentrations of radioactive isotopes. have resulted in accumulation of highly reproducible data. Such and 4-d transition elements correlate on separate straight lines from those which serve to correlate the non/ransition elements. The data for the uon-transilion elements diffusing in silver and copper liave been fitted by least-squares analysis. It is concluded that the size and charge effects which determine the magnitude of the activation energy for diffusion are a function of atomic volume. systems represent the simplest possible examples of chemical diffusion since solute interaction effects can be neglected and Kirkendall-like phenomena do not occur. Generally it is found that thc diffusion rate of the solute is within an order of magnitude of the diffusion rate of the solvent. The differences have been attributed to the effect of size and to electrostatic interactions between the solute and solvent atoms.

ARSENIC, antimony and phosphorus are now used in the brass industry as standard inhibitors in preventing dezincification in [ ] condenser tubes. This subject has been thoroughly covered by Barry,1 who described the testing procedure by total immersion of suitable specimens in a I per cent cupric chloride solution at definite temperatures. Effects of dezincification were then determined by loss in tensile strength and elongation of the test specimens after definite periods of immersion. In the crystallography of the chemical elements as tabulated by William Hume-Rothery,2 phosphorus (metallic), arsenic, antimony and bismuth are placed in group V-B and the type of crystal lattice for arsenic, antimony and bismuth is given as rhombohedral. The Metals Handbook3 [ ] lists them as "rhombohedral hexagonal," with the additional notation that for arsenic this is the ordinary form at 20°C.; other modifications known or probable at other temperatures. In view of these statements and of the fact that phosphorus, arsenic and antimony are effective in increasing the resistance to dezincification, it was natural to assume that bismuth would act in the same manner. A series of tests was therefore carried out employing the methods described by Barry. Much to our surprise, bismuth did not inhibit dezincification, but rather seemed to accelerate it. THE observation of the flow layers, or Lüders' lines, produced in mild steel when it is stressed into the plastic range often provides considerable useful information for the study of the fundamental mechanism of the plastic flow of metals. It is a commonly observed fact that as soon as the upper yield point in a mild-steel tensile-test bar is passed, an unstable condition develops in the equilibrium, the load on the testing machine drops and if the surface of the bar contains a thin mill scale, the latter begins to flake off rapidly along certain "lines." These "lines" are in reality traces of wedge-shaped flow layers and are formed by the intersection of the surface of slip and the surface of the bar. The average plane of the flow layer itself has been found by various experimenters to be inclined at an angle of approximately 45° to the axis of the test bar. In a body of more complicated shape stressed in possibly a different man-ner, the tangent planes to the flow layers at each point seem in many cases to be inclined at an angle of about 45° to the principal stress direc-tions at the point. As examples of the latter may be mentioned the logarithmic spirals obtained when a rivet hole is punched in a thin plate, or when a tube is subjected to internal pressure only, etc. Hence if the flow layers are observed from an experiment, the shear-stress trajectories -the curves indicating the directions of the maximum shearing stresses in the body-may then be approximately determined. Since the latter curves form an orthogonal family inclined at 45° to the principal stress directions, the family of principal stress trajectories, or the curves indicating the directions of the principal stresses, may be thus obtained. Although the discontinuous type of stress-strain curve at the yield point is commonly observed with test bars of mild steel, more recent experiments have shown that this is by no means the only material exhibiting this interesting phenomenon. A similar effect has been observed in zinc and cadmium crystals, by Becker and Orowan;1 in duralumin and other aluminum alloys, by Dawidenkow,2 Elam,3 Fell, and others; in copper and copper-alloy crystals, by Elam;5 in brass by Elam;5 in brass wires by deForest;6 in higher carbon steels, tungsten steel, and

It is now well known that the structure of aluminum-silicon alloys can be refined in a rather remarkable manner, with consequent improvement of physical properties, by certain treatments applied to the molten metal shortly before casting. The differences between the treated and the untreated alloys are so marked that special terms are used to distinguish them, the untreated alloys being referred to as "normal" and the treated alloys as "modified." The first practical method of accomplishing this result was that of A. Pacz,1 which consists in treating the molten metal with a salt flux of which the active ingredient is sodium fluoride. The result can also be brought about, and in a more economical manner, by the addition of small quantities of metallic sodium (or potassium) to the molten alloy shortly before casting.2 The action of the Pacz flux evidently consists essentially in the production of free sodium by the reaction of sodium fluoride with aluminum. The changing of a normal alloy to a modified alloy is referred to as "modification" and any process for accomplishing this result is a "modifying" process. Modified aluminum-silicon alloys were introduced several years ago, and it has been demonstrated both in the laboratory and in commercial practice that it is no simple matter to produce castings having the maximum or nearly the maximum properties which under favorable circumstances can be obtained. The alloys are rather sensitive to small changes in chemical composition, and the modifying process must be carried out in a very particular manner to obtain the best results. Extensive experimental work has been carried out in the laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America with the object of determining the conditions that must be observed to make these alloys of the greatest possible value. What progress has been made in rapid excavation of tunnels and shafts? Where do we go from here? To get some answers to these questions was the reason that 500 tunnel men-contractors, geologists, professors, lawyers, mining engineers--came to the University of Minnesota May 15-17. The attendance of 500 astonished conference organizer Professor D. H. Yardley, who had anticipated half that number. They came from Japan, South Africa, Austria, Sweden, and Australia to name a few, and an officer of the Corps of Engineers thought all his people should have been there. The Civil and Mining Engineering Departments of the University combined for the program, which was staged by M. K. Cragun for the General Extension Division. The Saga of the Oso Tunnel The present state of the art of rapid excavation is "good." There is little controversy about where we go from here and what's more, this reporter finds that the technical know-how to automate excavation in any kind of ground is extant, even if it will take some years to achieve this state. In a nut- shell though, the present status can be seen in its various ramifications in the saga of the Oso Tunnel, as told by V. L. "Vic" Stevens of Boyles Brothers Drilling Co. :

HOWLAND, GEORGE P. HULST, FREDERICK 1. SNYDER. There were 32 members present at the dinner of the Chicago Section which was held at the Chicago Engineers' Club on Friday Evening, December 22. At the meeting after the dinner, the Chairman called attention to the work of Mr. Hoover in Belgium and spoke briefly of the assistance which' could be given him through the Belgian Kiddies, Ltd. Mr. Alonzo Kinyon read a paper on "Burring Powdered Coal" which so interested the members that many of them participated in the long discussion which followed. Prof. Harry B. Pulsifier then described the metallurgical plants about Chicago. He mentioned briefly the equipment and interesting features of 30 metallurgical plants of importance and stated that there were also 200 foundries in the district. He said that when number, size, quality and diversity of the plants are considered, the Chicago District is justified in calling itself the greatest metallurgical center on earth. The paper was followed by a brief discussion in Which attention was called to some smaller and incipient plants of an interesting character. HENRY T. NICHOLS, Secretary.
