In all special branches of the chemical and metallurgical industries, in which large electric furnaces became necessary for carrying out new processes or for the improvement of old ones, the development of the electric furnaces took place on much the same lines. The endeavors to make a success of a new idea brought forth many ingenious designs, which, however, almost without exception, furnished the proof that the safest and shortest way to practical success is the utmost simplicity of construction of the necessary apparatus. Our knowledge of the qualities of materials for building electric furnaces and of the constituents of the furnace-charges, especially their electric conductivity and their chemical affinity towards one another at high temperatures, is still far from being complete, and from this fact we must conclude that the smaller the number of elements in the construction of a furnace, the fewer the number of unreliable factors both in the construction and in the operation of the electric furnace. This conclusion deserves special attention when an electric furnace for making steel has to be chosen from the constantly-growing number of inventions, inasmuch as the chief constituent of steel, the element iron, is a substance which in its liquid phase has so great an affinity for those elemen'ts which are to be removed from the charge, that it is very difficult to comply with the following conditions: 1, to heat the refining-slag to the highest point of its chemical activity ; 2, to prevent the iron from entering the slag, or, where this cannot be done, to make it enter so that it finally appears in the end-product

AT the annual meeting of this Institute held two years ago a new method, of estimating the grindability of coal was described, based on experimental work carried on by the Bureau of Mines at its Northwest Experiment Station. Since that time, several organizations concerned with the testing or utilization of coal as pulverized fuel have adopted and used the method in determining the grindability of several hundred samples of coal. In addition, a series of comparative tests of this method and three others has been carried out in five laboratories under the auspices of Committee D-5 of the American Society for Testing Materials. As a result the Committee has recommended that the Bureau of Mines method, designated as the "ball-mill method," and the Hardgrove method2, previously advanced, be accepted as tentative standards3. Since the ball-mill method was originally developed and published, an opportunity has been presented to apply it to a larger number of coals and to study intensively some of the principles upon which the method is based. This paper presents a resume of these further studies and includes a comparison with the Hardgrove-machine method. Trial runs were also made with another procedure recently proposed-the C.I.T. roll-test method4.

The purpose of this study is to present the results of a detailed survey of the financial and operating aspects of 30 oil companies comprising a major sample of the American petroleum industry. This review supplements a previous paper entitled "Capital Flow and Capital Formation in the Petroleum Industry, 1934-1941,"a and deals not only with a longer period but also gives new and more revealing analyses of the capital movements and characteristics. The data are gathered from published financial statements of the companies, especially the annual reports to stockholders and Form 10-K to the Securities and Exchange Commission, supplemented by confidential information. The 30 oil companies covered by this study are listed on the leading stock exchanges and for the purpose of analysis are grouped as follows: 9 companiesb engaged principally in crude production, 4 companiesc with production averaging in excess of refinery requirements, and 17 companiesd with refinery throughput in excess of crude production. These samples are sufficiently broad and representative to constitute norms against which individual company performances may be profitably compared. The 30 companies in 1942 produced 54 per cent of the Nation's total output of crude oil and refined 79 per cent of the country's crude run to stills. The financial data apply predominantly to the domestic oil business, although 15 of the companies have investments and operate facilities in foreign countries. The net value of these foreign holdings amounted to 724 million dollars, or 12 per cent, of the combined net assets of the 30 oil companies at December 31, 1942.

IT has been shown1 that in the absence of heavy metal salts, the nature of the alkali used to promote differential flotation-whether caustic soda, lime or sodium carbonate-is unimportant. The hydroxyl ion is the active depressant upon which differentiation depends, and the pH value determines whether a film of collector forms on any given mineral surface. Even when sodium cyanide is used in conjunction with alkalies, it is the pH value and not the nature of the alkali or its concentration that is important, for upon the pH value alone depends the fraction of the added sodium cyanide that is present as cyanide ion, which is the true depressant. When heavy metal salts become dissolved from partly oxidized ores, or are added intentionally as activators, conditions are different, and metallurgists have found that lime and sodium carbonate do not give identical results, even when added in amounts sufficient to produce the same pH value. In the few instances in which we had attempted to confirm this view, we had failed to do so, for, with nothing to guide us, we had inadvertently chosen solutions that gave contact curves of a "stand-ard type," which correspond to conditions of ready floatability. Now, however, we find that, in the presence of copper salts, and within a restricted range of reagent concentrations, the nature of the anions present is important, and that sodium carbonate does influence the results, apart from the usual effect due to its influence on pH value. With the recognition of this anion effect, and with the control of temperature already introduced,' it appears that the factors of major importance in connection with this set of reagents have been taken into consideration, and that the results obtained and the conclusions drawn from contact tests will be of more immediate value to the operator.

Important recent developments in the melting and annealing of non-ferrous metals include: 1. Melting of nickel silver in the vertical ring induction furnace. 2. Electric melting of stereotype metal. 3. The rotary-drum gas-fired brass melting furnace. 4. The low-frequency coreless induction furnace. 5. Finishing annealing of brass sheets with city gas1 replacing wood in the large brass-rolling mill. 6. Electric annealing of brass and copper tubing and sheets. 7. Replacement of oil by gas and electricity in the annealing of nickel-silver shells and stampings. Melting Nickel Silver in Vertical Ring Induction Furnace Although over 90 per cent. of the output of the brass rolling mills in the United States is now melted in electric furnaces,2 until recently a considerable part of the output of nickel silver has been the product of the pit fire. The application of the electric furnace to the melting of nickel silver has been slow for several reasons: (I) Until recently no lining has been available that gave a satisfactory life in the vertical ring induction furnace when melting nickel silver; (2) the rocking arc furnace so widely used in the foundry does not appear to have been favored by the rolling mill for melting nickel silver, possibly because the gases present may affect the quality of the alloy; and (3) the exclusive rights to the use of the high-frequency coreless induction furnace (which has proved very satisfactory for melting nickel silver) for the wrought brass industry are controlled by one concern. A little over one year ago the first vertical ring induction furnace to be used for melting nickel silver in the Naugatuck Valley was placed in operation. AT THE New York meeting of the Institute of Metals Division in February, 1927, Jeffries and Tarasov presented a paper on Tungsten and Thoria,1 in which the experimental facts were interpreted in accordance with the prevailing point of view that the thorium is present as the oxide, thoria. In discussing that paper the writer of this article stated that his own investigations, which had been unavailable to Messrs. Jeffries and Tarasov, showed that the so-called "thoriated" tungsten filament failed to disclose any sign of the oxide when subjected to X-ray diffraction analysis, but did give plenty of evidence of the presence of metallic thorium and, in certain cases, of a material believed to bean alloy of tungsten in thorium. Since these results were completely at variance with the results reported in the paper under discussion and with other papers which had preceded it from time to time in the past, it was felt that further discussion should be withheld until the new evidence could be presented adequately. Arrangements were therefore made to present that evidence at this meeting. MATERIAL EXAMINED The material examined was high-emission filament such as is used in radio tubes, supposed to contain about 0.75 per cent. thoria. The actual analysis was not stated.

INTRODUCTION The history of the development of gold metallurgy in South Africa is divisible into two periods: That preceding the introduction of the cyanide process on a commercial scale in 1890; and the 24 years intervening between that important event and the present time. The period between the discovery of the banket reefs of the Witwatersrand and the year 1890 was one of phenomenally rapid progress in mining development, but of no special interest to the metallurgist. There were no strikingly original or distinctly local advances in the treatment of gold ores. Californian practice in stamp milling and amalgamation prevailed, in mills ranging in equipment between 5 and 50 stamps, operating within a wide range of efficiency, and under the trying conditions usually en¬countered in a new and isolated field. The somewhat incomplete records of gold output of that period show that in December, 1887, there were 20 producing companies in the Witwatersrand district, of which 10 had mills, the largest being of 20 stamps. The only official record of returns for May, 1887, was that of the Wemmer mine, whose modest achievement with a 5-stamp, mill was 100 tons crushed, producing 887 oz. 3 dwt. of gold. This is interesting in view of the .present-day output of this field, which in 1913 reached 8,430,998 oz. The rapid increase of production during this first period (May, 1887, to January, 1891) is shown by the following summary for the year 1890:1 Total tons crushed 702,828 Number of stamps in operation 1,046 Average number of tons crushed per stamp per day 2.36 Yield of gold, ounces 494,817 Yield per ton, pennyweights 13.36 The stamp duty ranged between 1 ½ and 4 tons per day, according to weight of stamp, fineness of screen, and operating skill available. The prevailing weight of stamp was about 900 lb., and the screen, 900 meshes to the square inch.

During 1966, crushed stone production in the United States totaled just over 811 million tons valued at almost $1.2 billion. This represented in- creases of 4 % in tonnage and 5 % in value over that for 1965. Excluding the crushed stone used for agricultural and certain industrial purposes (cement, lime and flux), crushed stone mineral aggregate production totaled 616.3 million tons valued at almost $910 million, also up roughly 4% in tonnage and 5% in value over the 1965 figures. Limestone was by far the most widely used rock variety, followed by basalt, granite and sandstone in that order. Concrete aggregate and roadstone continued as the main uses for stone, accounting for 63% of all tonnage produced in 1966 and 60% of total stone value. Sand and gravel production in 1966 increased 3% over that for 1965. Total 1966 output was just in excess of 934 million tons valued at almost $985 million as compared with 908 million tons at $957 million for the previous year. Excluding the higher valued industrial sands, 903.2 million tons of sand and gravel valued at $891.6 million were used directly as mineral aggregates, representing a 2.9% increase in tonnage and a 2.4% increase in value over 1965.

Laboratory and plant data covering 12 different operations show that lower than "standard" ball mill speeds increase grinding efficiency. In the case of high pulp-level mills, the gain is so great that the increase in capital cost of the larger lower speed mill will pay for itself in less than a year's time.

The following summary is written for the benefit of the practical operator in the nonmetallic field who wishes to know what geophysics has done and may be expected to do in his line of work. His problem is quite different from that of the geophysicist who has operated with various or all methods and has followed the literature, and who is assumed to be familiar with the geologic possibilities and limitations of each method. This article is not written for the latter, although he may be interested in the four or five hitherto unpublished surveys described. To the operator, on the other hand, geophysics is only secondary. His problem is to determine which geophysical method is best suited to his special needs. If he wanted to know, however, which method could be used to locate a certain material of given physical properties, building stone, for instance, he would have to wade through a tremendous amount of geophysical literature, bibliographies and articles, before he could find what he wanted. Therefore, the purpose of this summary is to present the geological problems first and then to discuss the comparative merits of the geophysical methods that can be, or have been, applied. Choice of Geophysical Methods in Oil, Civil and Mining Engineering In the first two of these fields, the geological problems are not nearly so complex as in the metal and nonmetallic mining fields. The selection of the correct geophysical method in these fields is not nearly so difficult for the operator. For oil prospecting, his problems have been discussed exhaustively by E. DeGolyer.(1) † In civil engineering (foundation and ground-water work), the usefulness of electrical methods has been so well established that there is hardly any choice of other methods at present. The situation may be changed in the future with the perfection of the seismic reflection method for shallow depths. MEASURED in terms of ore tonnage, the New Quebec and Labrador iron ore fields promise to rank with the greatest iron ore districts of the world. Over 400 million tons of high-grade ore for direct shipping have been discovered to date. Much greater amounts of lower-grade beneficiating ores are indicated by outcrops. Many hundreds of square miles of iron formation await testing. By 1954 iron ore will begin to move towards American blast furnaces, and shortly thereafter the annual rate of production is expected to reach 10 . million tons. To bring this vast project into being over $200,000,000 will have been spent for exploration and development, mining equipment, hydro plants, townsites, the building and the equipping of . a 360-mile railroad, and the construction of docks and ore-handling facilities. The most important iron ore deposits are located over 300 miles from tide water, see frontispiece and also Fig. 1. The frontispiece shows principal sources of iron ores and manganiferous iron ores for the U. S. and Canadian steel industry, and the major smelting districts are shaded on the map. No navi- gable rivers lead into the interior. When work was . commenced on this project there were no roads, no railroads, no communication ,system, no inhabitants, and no adequate maps either topographical or geological. The geological field season was limited to approximately 100 days per season. The obstacles facing this enterprise were many and varied. Coal mining is a hazardous occupation, but tremendous progress has been made in reducing accidental injuries and deaths in the mines. Let us take a look at the hazards in coal mining and the accident record. COAL MINE SAFETY TODAY Underground coal mining creates underground open areas, rooms, and haulageways. The roof (top) and ribs (sides) become highly stressed, and because coal and slate are very weak in tension or compression they frequently fail and fall from the roof and ribs unexpectedly. This is the most hazardous condition miners must cope with underground, and it has consistently produced the greatest number of fatal injuries in the coal mining industry. Only very sophisticated equipment, but which is not yet practical for use underground, is able to detect the buildup of stresses that may eventually lead to a roof or rib fall. Today's miner still looks for fresh cracks in the roof or rib, listens for the "drummy" sound, and feels vibrations from loose material in the roof, when tapped with a sounding stick, in order to find material which may fall. Once located, it is barred down, but if this is not possible, it is then secured to prevent it from falling. The next great& hazard is the equipment used to mine or haul coal. It is large, heavy, reacts quickly to its controls and is operated in con- fined areas with low lighting levels. The record of the last few years shows that fatalities attributable to mining and hauling equipment are about equally divided. Thorough training as part of a complete safety program is necessary to teach employees the hazards of loose roof, rib, and machine operation in order that they can work in the safest way possible. Unless there is such a program, the trade is learned by trial and error with a resulting tragic.

The occurrence of oil or "tar" in Mexico was mentioned as early as the seventeenth century by Friar Sagahun, who gives the Indian name "chapopote," by which these asphalt seepages are still called. This asphalt was apparently used, as it has been used by primitive people in many parts of the world, in religious ceremonies and for medicinal purposes. Travellers also report that the ruins in Yucatan and the pyramids in southern Mexico show traces of the use of "chapopotel' as a building cement.l DeGolyer says that the first attempt to exploit oil or gas in Mexico in a commercial way is shown by the records of the Memoria de Fomento of 1865, when permission was granted to a Senor Ildefonso Lopez to exploit the deposits of petroliferous substances in the San Jose de las Rusias area in the State of Tamaulipas. Other concessions follow, and probably refer to surface seepages which occur in that district. This was several years after the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania. In 1868, a well 125 it. deep was :drilled by a company organized in Mexico City, in what is now known as the,, Furbero district, and a little oil was refined there. In 1873, residents of Tampico denounced seepages along the Tamesi River, and asphalt was mined near Tempoal in the Canton of Tantoyuca. No drilling was attempted. But between 1880 and 1883 several shallow wells were drilled for oil in Mexico, two of them being near the present Potrero de Llano field west of Tuxpam. The wells were drilled by a Boston company with Canadian rigs, and are said to have reached a depth of about 400 ft., while one is reported to have flowed. Several other abortive attempts were made to drill for oil between 1885 and the beginning of the present century, about which time the Mexican Petroleum & Liquid Fuel Co., Ltd., in which Cecil Rhodes was interested drilled 24 wells unsuccessfully, several of them as deep as 1,500 ft., in the State of Vera Cruz. THE name fuller's earth, which was derived from its early use in "fulling" or removing grease from woolen goods, is a term that is generally considered to designate mineral matter, containing hydrous aluminum silicates of the clay group, which has a high capacity for removing colors from oils, whether of animal, vegetable, or mineral origin. Fuller's earths are usually dried and may be "tempered" by heating or may be treated with water or reagents to improve their efficiency. For our purpose the term "acid-treated earths" will include those products from the partial decomposition of mineral water by acid which are equal to or more efficient than an untreated fuller's earth from Quincy, Fla., when used in bleaching mineral oil by the "contact" process. In general, the contact process for treating oils consists of heating and agitating a mixture of oil and finely divided adsorbent, the latter being subsequently removed by filtration. The term "adsorbent" is used because, although there has been a great deal of controversy over the mechanism of removal of impurities from oils by mineral matter, there is no doubt that adsorption, which involves the surface of the solid, plays a major part.1 The properties that make fuller's earth useful in the treatment of petroleum products by "percolation" and in the purification of edible oils by the contact process have long been studied, but the comparatively recent adaptation of the contact process to the bleaching of petroleum products has made desirable the further investigation of fuller's earth and other adsorbent earths.

An investigation, conducted by the author, was begun in September, 1889, by the United States Geological Survey, having for its object the study of the questions bearing upon the occurrence and manner of formation of the deposits of lead- and zinc-ores in Missouri and the adjoining States. The field-work was completed in December, 1891. During the first season the State Geological Survey of Missouri furnished an assistant, and in other ways co-operated in the research within the boundaries of that State. In order that the ore-deposits of the southwest might be compared with those of other sections of the Mississippi valley, an examination was made of the lead- and zinc-mining area of Wisconsin-Iowa, and of the argentiferous lead-mines of the region extending westward from Hot Springs, Arkansas, to Indian Territory. In the discussion of the general geology, and in comparisons between the ore-deposits of the Mississippi valley and those of the Rocky Mountains, the writer has drawn largely from his personal experience, having been engaged for many years in professional work as a geologist and mining engineer in that region. The Director of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Scate Geologist of Missouri have kindly consented to the publication of the present paper. While giving the more important economic results, an endeavor has been made to set forth the unity of plan which appears in the formation of the deposits of lead and zinc of the Mississippi basin, and to show their relation to the argentiferous ores of the Rocky Mountains—that the ores of gold, silver, and mercury, and also of copper, antimony, zinc, and lead, have a universal common origin, irrespective of the geological formations in which they occur.

The subject with which the Council of the American Institute of Mining Engineers has entrusted me is one of much interest. It has been so admirably treated in America by Prof. Carl Barus* that I should have hesitated to deal with it had not the adoption of pyrometric methods in England recently occupied much attention, especially in relation to metallurgical industries and research. I shall endeavor to show what is the present state of our knowledge of practical pyrometry by briefly tracing the history of the efforts which have been made to measure high temperatures. This paper will, therefore, be limited to the consideration of those forms of appliance which have either marked distinct stages of advance, or have remained in use with more or less modification through a considerable range of time. The earliest pyrometers were essentially thermoscopes, and although their graduation presented great difficulties, their importance as affording a means for the measurement of high temperatures has been recognized for centuries. It would be difficult to illustrate this better than by a brief record of the testimony which has from time to time been offered by those who have had to apply the heat of furnaces in research or in industry, and it is mainly for the sake of the light incidentally thrown on the progress of both that the following historical notes are offered. In the eighth century, Geber, the chemist, wrote a treatise on furnaces, and showed that he was familiar with many and varied means of applying heat; but he points to the difficulties that are met with in conducting operations at high temperatures, which he attributed to inability to measure heat, his actual words being: " sed quoniam non est res ignis, quae mensuari possit." t

RESULTS of investigation of corrosion-fatigue of metals at the U. S. Naval Engineering Experiment Station have been presented by the author in four papers. 1,2,3,4 In those papers references were given to the work of Haigh in 1917.5 The investigation at Annapolis included a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys. The experiments showed that even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue may cause failure at stresses far below the ordinary endurance limit. The experiments also showed that, for most metals, severe stressless corrosion prior to fatigue is much less damaging than even slight corrosion simultaneous with fatigue. The term "corrosion-fatigue" was restricted to mean the simultaneous action of corrosion and fatigue. The combined effect of corrosion followed by fatigue was called "prior-corrosion fatigue." A stress-cycle graph representing corrosion-fatigue is a curve approaching a horizontal asymptote, the ordinate of which may be called a "corrosion-fatigue limit." To avoid confusion in later discussion, the term "endurance limit" will be restricted to mean the fatigue limit obtained by tests in air with specimens as free as possible from stress concentration and from corrosion. The endurance limit as thus obtained presumably represents an inherent property of the metal.

The fact that many millions of gold have been extracted by the cyanide process, during the last five or six years, from South African tailings which could not be profitably worked by any other method previously tried upon them, lends a peculiar practical interest to this branch' of metallurgy. Numerous writers have recently made valuable contributions on the process without exhausting the many complexities of the subject. Among the first American writers on the subject in its modern aspect were two former students of the University of California, Mr. Louis Janin, Jr., and Mr. Charles Butters. Young Janin was one of the first to enter this field, and performed much useful experimental work in the early stages of the history of the process. At about the same time, Mr. Charles Butters, who had left California to erect chlorination works for the Robinson mine at Johannesburg, became interested in the cyanide process, and, after getting the chlorination plant in working order, put up, for working the tailings from the Robinson mine, a cyanide plant which achieved the first large-scale success ever made with this process. The papers which Charles Butters, together with John E. Clennell and Edgar Smart, have contributed on the chemistry of the process, were among the first to give any adequate idea of its nature.* Another important contribution to the literature of the subject is the paper of Dr. A. Scheidell, published in 1894 as a " Bulletin of the California State Mining Bureau." This contains an admirable summary of the state of the art at the time of its publication.

UNITED STATES petroleum pro-dU6tion during 1937 materially exceeded? that of any previous year. Firm control of the production rate was maintained under State and Federal laws and aided by the' Interstate Compact. During the first ten months," crude oil prices were stable, except for a slight increase early in the year. Toward the end of the year, uncertainty of price structure be-came evident and a sharp reduction in allowable production was under way. Exploration for new pools and development of .pools already discovered continued active throughout the year. Production control agencies in Texas, and to a less extent in New Mexico and Louisiana, appear to have had increasing difficulty in holding crude oil output to allowable limits. The situation elsewhere is less well known but probably the same condition exists in other important producing States whether control is by State commissions or by unofficial bodies.
