Bureau of Mines Reports of Investigations 3244, 3245, 3246 and 3264 give data of detailed studies on smelting in the lead "blast furnace handling zinciferous charges at Trail, B. C. The present paper gives more on analyses of the gases leaving the top of the charge and on accretions formed on the walls of the blast furnace. New data are presented to show the effect of the temperatures at the tuyere zone on the lead content of the slags made. The greater part of this paper, however, deals with a much debated subject, namely air used in lead blast furnaces. Original data are presented to show the effects on smelting lead 'products when air is supplied to a lead blast furnace under volume versus under pressure control.

Research was conducted to investigate how ventilation of a mining face is affected when scrubber flow is greater or less than intake flow. Tests were conducted in a full-scale surface test gallery built to simulate a mining entry with a continuous mining ma- chine at the face. Methane gas was released at constant flow at the mining face. Gas measurements taken at six locations near the face were used to evaluate how well the face was being ventilated. Increasing scrubber flow resulted in lower methane levels even when scrubber flow was much greater than intake flow.

The film you see is a slow motion view of a typical half million ton taconite blast at one of Erie's mines. This blast is made up of 220 drill holes and a total of 325 thousand pounds of blasting agent. The second view of the same shot is taken by a remote control hi speed camera located 1500' directly in front of the blast. Shortly you will see some violent camera movement as the air blast shock wave strikes the camera location. As the blasting sequence progresses the rock fly becomes evident, and if you will look closely amidst the clouds of smoke, rock fragments weighing up to 1/2 ton begin to cascade into view. These missles are the chief concern of blast security. The next camera shot at 4000 frames/second vividly describes the primacord firing lines detonating the blast. Travelling at 22,000 ft./sec., this white snake of fire travels to each hole, detonating the blasting agent. Before we get into the matter of blast security, let me locate our operation for those of you not acquainted with Minnesota's iron ranges and tell you something about our company.

The safe and efficient driving of the roadway along the gob is becoming an increasing challenge due to the influence of the integrity and bearing capacity of the side coal and rock mass in the gob under the roof cutting mining mode. The mechanism of protection of the gob-side roadway is shown by modeling the influence of roof cutting and the application of a destress technique on the lateral coal and rock mass zones. The distribution characteristics of stress, displacement, and fracture in the overburden are analyzed by numerical simulation method under the three working conditions. The results indicate (1) construction of row holes and blasting can form artificial structure’s fracture plane above the roadway, which can effectively cut the connection of overburden. The artificial structure’s fracture plane decreases the peak value of the lateral coal body’s support pressure. The peak point and the critical location of the stress reduction area are both transferred to the deep part at the same time, providing adequate space for the gob-side roadway. (2) The stress arch foot in the lateral rock mass rises to the rock layer at the bottom of the roof cutting plane after top cutting, as does the high-pressure area of deviator stress. The fracture plane prevents lateral coal and rock mass instability and limits the negative effects of roof deformation above the gob-side roadway. (3) The triangle slip fracture zone moves to over the roof cutting drilling zone due to the fracture plane, showing a high position compared to its original zone.

The Bismark Mine is located in northern Chihuahua, Mexico, 150 km (95 miles) southwest of Ciudad Juarez (Fig.1). The ore deposit was discovered in 1979 and was placed in production in 1992. The production rate is about 2.4 kt/d (2650 stpd) from an ore reserve of 8.5 Mt (9.3 million st). Grades currently average about 8% zinc, 0.5% lead, 0.2% copper and 50 g/t (1.46 oz/st) silver. Substantial inflows of water into the underground mine complicate the operation. Complex metallurgy poses another challenge for the operators. Bismark is a joint venture with 90% participation by Minas Penoles, SA de CR of Mexico City and 10% participation by Promociones Industriales Banamex, S A de C V (PIB S A) of Mexico City. Anew company, Minera Bismark, SA de CV was formed to operate the property. Cyprus Minerals was a 40% participant in the joint venture but, in early 1993, sold its share to Minas Penoles. The Bismark Mine is one of the largest new underground mining projects built in Mexico during the last 10 years. It is the country's fifth largest underground metal mine and provides about 1 % of the world's zinc supply at about 50 t/a (55,000 stpy). Bismark is a trackless operation with overall productivities of 7.6 t/manshift (8.4 st/manshift). The 2.4-kt/d (2650-stpd) concentrator started up in March 1992.

In these times of increasing costs and diminished returns, energy consumption is one source of savings that remains relatively untapped in the mining sector. Typically, 15% to 40% of operational costs can be attributed to energy in mining operations. This ?process variable? is a complex, multi-faceted variable that involves government regulations, societal pressures, cost and competitiveness. A mining company able to successfully embrace an energy efficiency program is more often than not a successful mining company. Production optimization programs, relatively common today, provide increased production, increased availability of assets and, in many cases, improved quality. They generally ignore the energy question altogether. Production Energy Optimization combines reductions in energy consumption with production improvements to reduce the cost per unit of production while improving emissions reporting. An energy strategy in mining and mineral processing operations is a critical component of Production Energy Optimization. This strategy must support the financial and operational integrity of the business. Developing a successful energy strategy requires a well structured approach such as following: ??Understanding where energy is being used and why, ??Recommending and implementing energy conservation measures, ??Driving visibility to targets and results, ??Re-evaluating continuously. A pond rehabilitation and environmental education project were proposed by Cleveland-Cliffs Michigan Operations (CCMO) and approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) as partial fulfillment of conditions for a stream mitigation permit. The goals of the project were the rehabilitation of a pond on a tributary of a local trout stream, enhancement of public access and appreciation, and the initiation of a site-based environmental educational curriculum. Cleveland-Cliffs undertook a suite of actions to rehabilitate a pond created by a previous mining operation in 1912 and make accessible to local schools the aquatic and riparian ecosystems. Cleveland-Cliffs partnered with the local governmental unit and two local school districts. The rehabilitated pond and riparian zone provide an accessible natural area that local residents can use for such activities as hiking, biking, walking, fishing and nature study. Vegetative enhancement includes the planting of native shrubs, wildflowers and showy herbaceous plants in the pond, on the riparian fringe and the surrounding area. An interpretive trail was developed around the pond with signs created by a local master watercolor artist. Local schools built and installed picnic tables, benches and a kiosk. Cleveland-Cliffs created pond lesson plans tied to the Michigan Curriculum Framework, developed inexpensive teaching kits and hosted a workshop for teachers from nine local schools. Classes regularly utilize the pond during the school year conducting environmental studies. Nesting boxes, wildflower gardens, bat houses, frog deformity surveys and water quality studies are a few of the activities that classes have conducted at the pond.

"IntroductionThe Cape Breton Development Corporation (CBDC) located in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, in eastern Canada, was established in 1967. Its mandate at that time was to facilitate a phased downsizing of the coal industry and developing viable replacement industries. The oil crisis in the early 1970s changed CBDC’s mandate and focus was modified to increase coal production to support Nova Scotia Power Commission’s “off oil” policy for their power generators. In the late 1980s the mandate to develop viable replacement industries was eliminated and CBDC became primarily a coal mining company. CBDC presently operates two underground coal mines, Phalen Colliery and Prince Colliery, using a retreat longwall method of mining. Both mines operate beneath the Atlantic Ocean. CBDC also operates associated infrastructure — central workshops, a railroad, coal preparation plant, and international pier. The Need For Substantial ChangeOver the last few years, CBDC has been facing some challenging issues, including improving labour management relations and achieving financial self-sufficiency and profitability. Recent achievements with regard to human resource issues, especially in the areas of collective bargaining, absenteeism, and attendance, show noticeable improvements. All participants should be commended for successfully concluding the collective bargaining process with all four CBDC unions, CUPE; CAW; IAM&AW; and UMWA. However, although these changes are encouraging, even critical in the short term, they are not sufficient to ensure the long-term viability of the company. Market ForcesShort- and long-term financial realities are drawing the need for further substantive changes. The corporation has a mandate to achieve financial self-sufficiency by the year 1999. This goal can only be achieved through a combination of cost reductions and productivity gains, specifically, a reduction in the workforce of 658 and an increase in production of 800 000 tonnes annually. This increase in productivity requires CBDC to re-think the way it does things.In the longer term, CBDC faces even greater challenges. The energy market is becoming more competitive. The electrical utilities across Canada are anticipating deregulation and are positioning themselves for the resultant competition. As primary fuel supplier to Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI), the corporation will have to become ever more competitive to stay in business."

Both client and end user are quite rightly influenced by their own experiences. The question is who is right, the client and his consultant, the supplier or perhaps a combination of these. This paper looks at some of the fundamental variances that often occur in the approach to the mechanical design of drum hoists, based on our experiences of recent years. Silver and cupric ions have been proven to play the roles of catalysts to promote the oxidation kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid solution. In this study, the interaction between silver ions and cupric ions during ferric leaching of chalcopyrite in sulfuric acid solution has been investigated. The electrochemical study by Tafel analysis showed a significant boost of dissolution rate for chalcopyrite dissolution in Fe3+- Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution after Ag+ was added in the solution. For 10 ppm Ag addition, the dissolution rate of chalcopyrite increased to 7.94 ×10-6 A/cm2 from 3.2 ×10-7 A/cm2, when Ag+ was absent. On the other hand, the effect of Cu2+ on the dissolution of chalcopyrite in Fe3+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solution was not obvious from electrochemical measurements. The chalcopyrite leaching tests in different acid solutions showed that silver addition had an obvious catalytic effect on promoting chalcopyrite dissolution. Comparing the leaching rates of chalcopyrite leached in Fe3+ containing, Fe3+-Ag+ containing, Fe3+-Cu2+ containing and Fe3+-Cu2+-Ag+ containing sulfuric acid solutions, it was found in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution, the leaching rate was highest among all the aqueous acid systems. Further leaching tests suggested that with increase of the Ag+ concentration from 0 to 20 ppm, the leaching rate of chalcopyrite in Ag+-Fe3+-Cu2+ containing sulfuric acid solution also increased and reached 57.62% with 20 ppm Ag+ addition after 24 h. INTRODUCTION Chalcopyrite is the most important copper mineral in copper hydrometallurgy and it accounts for nearly 80% of the universal copper resource (Olvera, Rebolledo, Mora, Dixon, & Asselin, 2018). The hydrometallurgy of chalcopyrite has been intensively studied with emphasis on solving the slow dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in acid environment. A variety of aqueous systems, such as sulfate (Hiroyoshi, Miki, Hirajima, & Tsunekawa, 2001), chlorides (Liu, Chen, & Yang, 2017), and ammonia (Hua et al., 2018) have been studied to improve copper leaching. From another perspective, chalcopyrite leaching studies have indicated that the mechanism of chalcopyrite dissolution in acid solution is essentially electrochemical (Li, Kawashima, Li, Chandra, & Gerson, 2013). Therefore, extensive studies have recently been carried out to explain the dissolution kinetics of chalcopyrite in different media by various electrochemical techniques.

Traditionally, characterisation of the mineralogy and textures of ore and rock samples were based on observations of hand specimens and thin sections using an optical microscope. The extent of the data collection was limited by the available tools and thus variations in mineralogy and texture were generally not described by quantitative data. These qualitative to semi-quantitative approaches, even though well established over the years, resulted in variable observations and data sets. The data were unlikely to be representative of a sample and limited statistical validity meant the results could not be reliably used in modern digital mining design and planning. With recently developed SEM based quantitative mineralogy tools and the corresponding methodologies, ore textures can be quantified and compared numerically. The numerical data can not only enhance the understanding of an orebody in geological terms, but can also be used in the creation of metallurgical models for mine and mineral processing design and simulation. These capabilities provide valuable inputs to risk assessment studies and the evaluation of mineral projects.

The methods and equipment developed and used at the Mount Isa mine to obtain samples of uncemented hydraulic fill lying above major horizontal pillars are described. From existing underground development, samples were obtained at distances up to 50 m, of which up to 30 m was through hard rock. Samples were used to predict fill behaviour as it affected mining security during recovery of the pillars.Specialized equipment for difficult sampling situations and also other sampling exercises are described.

The construction of Oakland Airport Roadway Project for the airport expansion requires stabilization of subsurface soils for the construction of three grade separation structures at two roadway interchanges and the intersection of a roadway and taxiway serving the airport. Loose sandy fills and soft Bay Mud were improved by Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) for the construction of a soil-cement foundation under the MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls of a roadway overcrossing and a soil-cement gravity retaining wall to maintain stability of a roadway undercrossing during and after a major earthquake. CDSM was also used to construct two cutoff walls for groundwater control. A test section was carried out prior to full production to verify that the CDSM equipment, installation procedures, and mix designs could produce the soil-cement with required strength, uniformity, and permeability to meet the design intent. Additional test sections were performed for the confirmation or modification of the mix design and installation procedure to cope with the complex subsurface conditions resulting from the historical development of the site. The test section revealed that the CDSM cutoff walls, retaining wall, and foundation improvements could be constructed to satisfy the design requirements and that the intermittent test sections alleviate the impact of the varying subsurface conditions. Based on the data obtained from the test sections, one CDSM cutoff wall was completed in July 2000. Full production of the CDSM retaining wall, cutoff wall, and foundation began in March 2001 and is expected to be complete in November 2001.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a microseismic study conducted in the Climax block cave mine at Climax, Colo. Rock noises created by caving were monitored and their sources located during a 3-month period. A planar array of seven accelerometers, located above the block of ore being caved, detected the rock noise. A computer was used to calculate the location of the microseismic activity, using a traveltime difference method. The accuracy of these locations was estimated to be ±20 feet. An analysis of the data taken during the recording period showed a concentration of microseismic events located in the wall of the cave panel. This concentration of events was found to occur in a "high-silica" geologic forma-tion that cut across the caving panel approximately 200 feet behind the undercut.

"INTRODUCTION In a previous reports results were given of a manhole investigation carried out over a period from June,- 1929, to July, 1930, in cooperation with the Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Boston, Mass., to determine the general hazards of combustible gases and vapors in manholes and other underground openings owned by this company. Considerable time was spent in this initial investigation in developing a suitable detector for determining the range of explosibility of the gases found in manholes. About 17,000 tests have been made with the detector since the investigation was started and its utility has been verified and its accuracy checked, by having complete analyses made of such samples that showed combustibles present equal to or above 25 per cent of the lower explosive limit, and those found deficient in oxygen.The initial investigation made in 1929 and 1930 demonstrated that the detection, control, and elimination of combustible hazards in manholes can best be obtained by a close cooperation of the interested parties through a systematic and continuous inspection of manholes, under proper supervision.COOPERATIVE INVESTIGATI0N DURING 1931The investigation carried out during the year 1931 has been along lines similar to that conducted during 1929 and 1930. In the present investigation the Edison Electric Illuminating Cc. of Boston and the Boston Consolidated Gas Co., have cooperated with the Bureau of lanes. The Boston Consolidated Gas Co. serves a major part of the territory under discussion with gas, but the tests covered the Edison territory irrespective of the gam company furnishing manufactured gas. A test crew consisting of two men, one an employee of the Consolidated Gas Co. and one an employee of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., has been continuously employed during the year in the testing of games in manholes served by the Edison system. The test crew was under the direct supervision of John Campbell, superintendent of the special service department of the Edison Electric Illuminating Co., and F. M. Goodwin vice president of the Consolidated Gas Co.As in the previous investigation, all manhole tests were given test numbers. The test data sheets on which the information regarding the tests were recorded were prepared in triplicate, one copy going to the Edison Company, one going to the Gas company, and the third to the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh. These test data sheets were then filed (1) according to the town, (2) the street location, and (3) the manhole number; in this way a complete record pf each manhole tested was immediately available. A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. A low volatile medium coking coal from Jharia coal field, India was used for this investigation. The proximate analysis of the sample shows that it contains about 25% ash, 21.4% volatile matter and 52.4% fixed carbon. The sizewise ash analysis of -0.5 mm coal indicates that -0.5+0.15 mm fraction contains lower ash (21.9%) than -0.15 mm fraction (29.7%). The flotation characteristics of the -0.5 mm coal were determined by release analysis. The study reveals that recovery of combustible at 15% ash is about 27% and 43% at 17% ash level. The low recovery is due to the presence of high ash in finer fraction. In order to improve the recovery, the -0.5 mm feed was classified into -0.5+0.15 mm and -0.15 mm fractions, and subjected to flotation separately. The recoverable combustible obtained from the release analysis of -0.5+0.15 mm at 15% ash level is 46%. The effect of collector dosage, frother dosage and aeration rate on flotation was studied. The responses of these variables in collectorless flotation of the -0.5+0.15 mm fraction containing low ash were also studied. A lower aeration and frother dosage favored the generation of clean coal with low ash. The ash content in the tailing stream from -0.5+0.15 mm flotation circuit is close to that of the original -0.15 mm fraction. The former is ground to -0.15 mm and the two fractions are processed together. As -0.15 mm fraction contains relatively higher ash, collector aided flotation using sodium silicate was performed to recover the clean coal with 17% ash. The products of the overall flotation circuit having different ash levels were recommended for use in different applications. The reject from -0.15 mm flotation circuit contained 56.4% ash which can be used for fluidized bed combustion (FBC). This eventually leads to complete utilization of coal.

A Deep Underground Science and Engineering Laboratory (DUSEL) is being planned at the site of the former Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota, under the sponsorship of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in cooperation with the Department of Energy (DOE). This national facility will host a variety of multi-disciplinary science and engineering experiments including physics experiments that require shielding from cosmogenic radiation. Current plans include construction of large rooms (up to 55 m in width) at depths of 1.48 km (4850 ft) and 2.25 km (7400 ft) below the surface. Preparation of the preliminary design required the development of a geotechnical characterization program including: preliminary drilling and coring, core logging, drill hole mapping with a televiewer, drift mapping of the geology and rock structure, in-situ stress measurements, and laboratory testing of the mechanical properties of the rocks and discontinuities. Overall rock quality is very good to excellent. Site investigations were followed by geotechnical assessments for the construction of caverns and laboratory modules. The results are favorable and reaffirm selection of the Homestake site for establishment of a Deep Underground Engineering and Science Laboratory.
