Although not fully accepted in South Africa, the Theory of Sampling originally proposed by Pierre Gy is fast becoming the cornerstone of sampling practice throughout the world. The growing acceptance of Gy?s Theory of Sampling in South Africa can be attributed to a number of factors, chief amongst them being the development of a tradable mineral asset market, the promulgation of the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act (MPRDA), the growing number of commercial and academic courses that are offered on sampling, and the regulation of the industry through internationally acceptable guidelines and rules for reporting and trading in mineral assets. The size of the South African minerals industry and the dependence of our economy on mineral production have also meant that correct sampling is of key importance to mineral trade. ISO standards have been the principal guides for producers of mineral bulk commodities who produce to customers? specifications, whereas Gy?s insights have been most readily accepted by precious and base metals producers whose product is sold into metal markets. Understanding of small-scale variability is essential in the precious and base-metal industries, but detailed studies of the effects of heterogeneity have not been as productive in the bulk commodities. Sampling practices at different stages of mineral development from exploration, face sampling and grade control, ore processing and handling, metallurgical sub-sampling, point of sale sampling, and sampling in the laboratory are considered in the gold, platinum, ferrous metal, and coal industries. A summary of the impact of poor sampling in these industries is presented. Generally it appears that poor sampling practice is most likely to erode mineral asset value at the early stages of mineral development. The benefits of good sampling are considered, especially with regard to the financial implications of bias and error on large and consistent consignments of bulk commodities. Redpath Australia is using a unique mining method for the Australian underground coal industry at Kestrel Mine Extension in the Bowen Basin, Central Queensland.The project involves completing two separate drifts from the surface for access to the German Creek Coal Seam located approximately 230 m below the existing surface. The scope of work is primarily the construction of two drifts; the first is 1577 m at 1 in 6 gradient and the second 1874 m at 1 in 8 gradient. Each drift has been developed by a Mitsui S200 roadheader with modifications to allow for a continuous tunnelling/mining cycle operation. A shotcrete boom has been fitted to the left hand side of the machine with the operators console located at ground level. Another operators console is elevated on the right hand side of the machine to allow operation of the rotary drill boom which is mounted on a slide rail to allow flexibility of positioning depending on the stage of the cycle. In support of the roadheader activities, an integrated conveyor system mounted on a sliding floor arrangement is able to be advanced as the mining face progresses. This sliding floor consists of four 1.5 m × 6 m sections that utilise hydraulic rams to ‘walk’ inbye, allowing room for installation of precast concrete floor panels for final floor completion. This method borrows from the tunnelling and construction industries to eliminate place-change delays in the mining cycle by enabling complete ground support installation without retreat of the primary development machine from the face. The aim is to reduce the project duration with the completion of final floor and services to within 30 m of the operating face as it advances.

The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

The Work Health and Safety Act 2020 (WA) (WHS Act; DMIRS, 2020) and associated Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 (WA) (WHS Regulations; DMIRS, 2022), supporting guidance materials and other laws, such as the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) (SD Act), have imposed new duties on every person or business conducting an undertaking (PCBU) in Western Australia, including those operating in the mining industry. These laws and associated guidance materials combine to require owners, operators and contractors to discharge positive duties and better report and manage psychosocial hazards in the workplace. For mine operators, there is a positive duty to not only identify and eliminate hazards relating to psychological harm, sexual harassment and gendered violence at work, but to also report incidents to the safety regulator that could result in serious harm, even while internal and police investigations are ongoing. Traditional mines safety teams are navigating the evolving frontier of psychological and gendered safety as the duties relating to psychosocial safety and sexual harassment at work continue to expand. This paper will review the legal obligations on PCBUs to conduct internal investigations into critical psychosocial incidents and gendered violence on mines, whilst balancing the demands and sensitivities of investigations by the safety regulator and police. There are emerging approaches to safety investigations that can aid PCBUs in managing their investigations of psychosocial incidents and gendered violence, including trauma-informed investigation techniques, collaboration with psychological experts and the use of limited legal privilege. Well managed and sensitive investigations can foster trust amongst workers, result in improved incident reporting by workers and lead to enhanced safety outcomes for the resources industry whilst preserving the legal positions of involved PCBUs. Specifically traversing the new duty to consult, cooperate and coordinate, this practical session will arm mine managers, safety professionals and human resources professionals, from mine operators and mining contractors alike, with tools and processes to bring to safety investigations, particularly on residential mine sites.

[The utilization of Western coals and lignite is a continuing study of the Bureau of Mines, and storage of these fuels is of paramount importance. Since the seasonal demand for coal in the Western States triples between the summer and winter months, successful storage of these low-rank fuels would tend to level out this variation and should reduce fuel costs. The time is rapidly approaching when the West Coast States, particularly California, will annually import several million tons of coal from the Rocky Mountain States for additional power production. This will necessitate storage of large quantities of coal, and it is thefore important to develop experience in such storage. Dry surface storage, by virtue of its flexibility and low cost, is particularly adapted to the stockpiling of large quantities of coal. This report will, therefore be primarily concerned with such storage. Inasmuch as the problems of dry, open-pit storage are quite similar to those of surface stockpiling, experiences in pit storage will be discussed briefly. Although spontaneous combustion is a hazard in storing coal, experience has proved that heats can be avoided by proper stockpiling procedures. The purpose of this report is to show that the most reactive coals can be stored satisfactorily on the surface by avoiding segregation and by thorough compaction.]

For the years 1990 and 1991, West Virginia's underground coal small-mine fatality rate « 20 employees) was approximately ten times higher than the national coal industry rate. Although the total number of fatalities decreased to 17 in 1992 (from 22 in 1991), West Virginia still led ,the nation in coal mining fatals. A team of mining and safety professionals from West Virginia University studied the problem over the past year, interfacing with the Mine Safety and Health Administration and the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training. A clear path for 'formal intervention was determined and is presented here.

NOWHERE can there be found a more misleading statement than the old one that "Iron can be manufactured cheaper in the South." During the past decade ironmakers and users of iron have heard varied and sundry stories of the wonderful resources of the Birmingham district, including abundant ore and coal fields, cheap labor, a wonderful climate and similar industrial Utopian statements. Birmingham represents the major portion of the iron business in the South, acid as Birmingham fares so goes the iron business of the South. The intent of this paper is to shed some light on the actual conditions surrounding ironmaking in the South, especially in the Birmingham, or North Alabama, district. By a presentation of facts it is desired to point out that the "cheap iron" of the industrial South is a thing of the past, primarily because of increased labor cost and because labor is radically different in performance to what it was years ago. Also, because most of the raw materials needed in ironmaking that would be classed better than inferior are gone.

In the 1989 best-seller The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, the author, Stephen Covey, highlights the importance of maintaining not only ‘production’, but also, ‘production capacity’. When operating a modern flotation concentrator, production is often measured in terms of concentrate tonnage, tonnes milled and plant utilisation. There are very few metrics that focus directly on flotation equipment condition in relation to performance, which is analogous to Covey’s production capacity principal. It is evident on many mine sites that flotation equipment condition is not monitored on a proactive basis and that the prevailing culture is to wait for a failure, before addressing an issue.This paper discusses examples of how poor equipment condition can lead to production loss through poor metallurgical performance. Actual examples are given where these problems have occurred in operating plants. De forma que se busca definir las variables geometalúrgicas del mineral de Chabuca Norte, optimizar los procesos metalúrgicos del mineral mixto mediante la investigación geometalúrgica, así como correlacionar el entendimiento de la geología y alteraciones del yacimiento con los procesos metalúrgicos y crear valor mediante la optimización de la tasa de tonelaje de tratamiento y el incremento del porcentaje de recuperación de cobre en el proceso.

Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

The determination of phase relationships and solid-solubility limits can be performed by quantitative metallography in addition to the usual X-ray and metallographic techniques. For example, Beck and smith1 redetermined the ß/ß + ?, ß + ?/?, a/a + ß and a + ß/ß boundaries in the Cu-Zn system by measuring the volume fraction of second phase of several alloys and extrapolating the volume fraction-composition curves to 0 and 100 pct. A modification of this technique is suggested for certain alloy systems, in which it is not necessary to use several alloy compositions but merely one. A single two-phase alloy may be used to determine terminal solubilities in the following manner. The method consists of equilibrating samples of the alloy in a two-phase region adjacent to the desired solid solution, at three or more temperatures, quenching, measuring the volume fraction of second phase present, and applying an analytical treatment to calculate the unknown solid solution. However, two restrictions are inherent in this technique. They are: 1) only certain types of alloy systems are amenable to it, and 2) the general features of the system must be known. The first drawback to the new technique, i.e., that only certain types of systems may be studied, necessitates that the composition at one end of the tieline must either be constant with temperature or well established as a function of temperature. Either a pure metal or some intermetallic compounds fulfill the former. If it is assumed that the volume per gram-atom of a dilute solution is unchanged by the addition of element B to element A, the composition of the solid solution in equilibrium with the second phase may be determined by a material balance and is given by where X, = volume fraction of B in a solid solution Xc = volume fraction of B in compound c X = volume fraction of B in alloy f = volume fraction of second phase The composition by weight may then be determined by the use of tables in the Metals Handbook2 when the density ratio of the solid solution constituents is known. A possible alternative treatment involving the use of the lever rule is less precise than the above tech- nique. This may be used when the density of the solid solution is either known or may be calculated from X-ray data for several compositions. The following analysis is then made. [4]. The known densities of the solid solution can be plotted for various compositions and can then be expressed mathematically as a function of composition. The use of an expression of pB = f(x)reduces the equation to one unknown—the desired solubility. In the event that the densities are unknown, they may be calculated for various compositions from Vegard&apos;s law. The calculated values are then plotted and expressed analytically. The most accurate results are obtained for Eq. [4] when fc<< 1, i.c., when (x, -x,) - 0, &/l-f, - m; but as fc/l -fc - 0, (xl-x,)- (x, - x), and x - x,,. However, the accuracy with which fc can be measured decreases as f, decreases.3 Alloys for investigation must be selected by a compromise, which is based upon an error analysis of Eq. [4] and knowledge of the accuracy of volume fraction measurements. An examination of phase diagrams in the literature showed many which were amenable to the technique described here. The zirconium-copper system was selected in order to determine the solubility of copper in beta zirconium. Pieces of an alloy which was arc-melted three times were wrapped in tantalum foil and sealed under an argon atmosphere in Vycor tubes. It is safe to assert that in cities generally, the fuel of the future for all domestic, as well as for most manufacturing and metallurgical purposes, will be gaseous fuel. The immense advantages which gas possesses in facility and cheapness of distribution, cleanliness, and economy of manipulation, and the facilities which it offers for utilizing in almost all cases a much higher percentage of the total quantity of heat produced, than it is possible to do with any kind of solid fuel, are facts which will vastly more than compensate for the comparatively small loss of heating power, which will be found necessary in the turning of the solid fuel into gas upon a large scale, and which, in the bpinion of the writer, will, at no distant day, command attention, and will ultimately result in a revolution in our use of fuel. Drilling and blasting is a clearly delineated work process, which has well defined inputs and outputs. Drilling and blasting is also a process with a number of steps each of which has measurable outcomes. Drilling and blasting is ideally suited to the application of Total Quality Management principles. Most drilling and blasting information is generally poorly managed with disjointed and unrelated Information Technology systems managing parts drilling and blasting data. Data is often moved from on system to another, sometimes manually. In the field, drilling and blasting is still very much a paper based system and which has not generally benefited from some of the recent hardware and software technology advancements now “on the shelf”. Data collected on paper rarely is transcribed back into an electronic system for further analysis. It is often difficult to collate or review historic drilling and blasting data. This paper will present a definition of Total Quality Management and demonstrate how it can be applied to the drilling and blasting work process. Total Quality Management defines the mechanisms for the application of continuous improvement to drilling and blasting. Continuous improvement will provide opportunities to modify drilling and blasting work process outcomes and generate real cost benefits within the overall mining process. A complete drilling and blasting management system frame work, called DBS, is presented in this paper. DBS provides all the components necessary to implement a full drilling and blasting Total Quality Management solution. Also highlighted will be appropriate “off the shelf” technology that can be applied to replace current paper based systems and provide the means to connect with other mine data systems. Various examples will be discussed which will demonstrate potential benefits of applying a structured Total Quality Management approach to a drilling and blasting work process.

A 3-month study in 1971 of the Essen Roof Support and Rock Mechanics Research Center&apos;s program of roof and support evaluation included 25 mine trips. German miners must adopt mining methods and environmental control measures involving methane drainage and water infusion to improve productivity under severe natural conditions. Pressing problems in ground control must be solved such as cavities in front and above the supports at longwall faces and excessive convergence in gate roads. The Center developed automatic data processing methods to quantify the results of roof and support surveys and to establish criteria. Another approach to ground control is the study of mine models. The Center&apos;s laboratory has the facilities to test elements of powered roof support and whole assembled units. Face automation and roof control by powered shields are novel developments that are under close scrutiny in the field as well as in the laboratory. Though the Essen Center&apos;s roof and support evaluation techniques are tailored to the needs of the coal mining industry of the Federal Republic of Germany under conditions vastly different from those in the United States, some application may be found here, for instance, monitoring faces and roadways and preventive maintenance of hydraulic systems.

"Since the late 1990s, increased prevalence of severe lung disease among US coal miners has been observed, particularly in central Appalachia where thin-seam mining is prevalent. While respirable silica exposures have been implicated in many cases, the available dust monitoring data from mines shows no explanatory trends. One possible factor could be differences in the relative toxicity of silica particles based on their surface condition. Previous research has indicated that particles with occluded surfaces (e.g., by a thin layer of clay) may be less toxic than those with non-occluded surfaces. However, this dust characteristic has not been investigated before now in central Appalachian mines. In the present study, 18 respirable dust samples from seven central Appalachian mines and two northern Appalachian mines were analyzed to assess the relative occurrence of surface-occluded silica. Results showed that the dust from central Appalachian mines actually had higher fractions of occluded silica, which may be due to extraction of large amounts of rock strata along with the coal. However, the central Appalachian mines also more silica particles overall (i.e., occluded + non-occluded) in terms of total number percentage of respirable particles.INTRODUCTIONResurgence of occupational lung disease among US coal miners, especially in the central Appalachian region, has been observed since the late 1990’s (Gibson, 2016; Zosky et al., 2016; Suarthana et al., 2011; Gamble et al., 2011; Antao et al., 2005; Attfield & Sexias, 1995). In addition to increased prevalence of simple Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”), the prevalence of severe and rapidly progressive disease has risen dramatically (Almberg et al., 2018; Blackley et al., 2018a, 2018b, 2016, 2014; Graber et al., 2017; Cohen et al., 2016). While exposures to respirable silica have long been known to cause or play a role in diseases such as silicosis or progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is conventionally considered as the most advanced form of CWP, it is unclear whether silica is the only culprit in the recent outbreak of severe disease. Indeed, as disease rates have risen, both total respirable dust and silica concentrations generally appear to have declined since the late 1980s, based on regulatory monitoring data in the most affected mining districts (i.e., MSHA coal Districts 4, 5 and 12, which cover central WV, eastern KY and southwestern VA, and southern WV, respectively) (Figure 1). Of course, the latency of disease can vary and may be or more 10 years, but many of the most recent cases are likely to have resulted from exposures that occurred since the late 1980s."

Understanding the interaction between rock bolts and underground rock movement is critical for safe and cost effective underground excavation design. Although early research on this subject involved a balance of theoretical analysis and field measurement, recent work has been heavily focused on analytical and numerical studies. This paper describes technologies that have the potential to redress the balance through instrumentation of rock bolts deployed under routine operating conditions in underground mines. Two new products are presented in this paper. Firstly the U-cell coupler is a load cell device that can be routinely coupled to the threaded end of a bolt prior to installation. It measures the ?series? load at the head of the bolt. Secondly, the d-REBAR involves an array of small-diameter, long-base length displacement sensors recessed into grooves along the entire length of the bolt. Both new instruments are interfaced with on-board digital signal conditioning and telemetry. Methodologies for the deployment of the new instrumentation and guidelines are presented for the interpretation of results based on data obtained from field trials. Successful field installations demonstrate the viability and practicality of these new technologies and, moreover, provide important insight in to rock bolt/rock mass interaction.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has received several reports of filters igniting when high-temperature disposable filters were used on non-cooled diesel exhaust systems in underground coal mines. Based on laboratory testing (to determine the ignition temperature of these filters, which were loaded in the field with diesel particulate matter, or DPM), MSHA determined a maximum safe operating temperature for high-temperature disposable filters. When the results of the laboratory filter ignition testing were reported to the Coal Diesel Partnership (comprised of members of the Coal Industry, Labor, NIOSH and MSHA) the Partnership charged NIOSH with investigating the safe use of high-temperature disposable filters. This paper reports on the design, fabrication and testing of a unique exhaust gas cooling device and the ability of this device to successfully lower filter inlet temperatures and thus reduce the potential for fires.

"Synthetic Aperature Sonar (SAS) is a powerful tool for ultra-high resolution marine survey. The Kongsberg HiSAS system deployed on the HUGIN AUV has a rangeindependent resolution of 3x3 cm for sonar image and ~10x10cm for the interferometric bathymetry product [1]. This resolution is achievable for areas up to 50 km2 on a single survey mission providing huge multi-attribute datasets. This technology, originally designed for military and oil-industry applications, has the potential to revolutionize scientific seafloor mapping. The extreme resolution of this technique allows for deposit mapping in and around seafloor hydrothermal systems, including the discovery of extinct venting structures. By clearly distinguishing between volcanic and hydrothermal landscapes based on features below the resolution of conventional multibeam systems, SAS enables an entirely new level of hydrothermal deposit survey. Additionally due to the extreme resolution of this survey technology, repeat survey and change detection should allow centimeter-scale changes in deposit morphology to be routinely detected over an entire hydrothermally venting region. In collaboration with the EU funded MIDAS project, the Centre for Geobiology at the University of Bergen will deploy the HUGIN AUV this summer at two distinct shallow venting systems on the Arctic Mid-Ocean Ridge system. The AUV will collect repeat bathymetry at the Jan Mayen Vent Field, and extend the SAS coverage to include newly discovered venting sites. We will present the preliminary findings of this expedition, including the first deposit estimations made from full-resolution SAS mosaics."

The Timbarra opencut gold mine is located about 30 km(19 miles) southeast of Tenterfield in northern NSW some 4 hours by car from Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia. It was a small operation designed to produce about 40000 ounces of gold per annum utilising contract mining and company owned crushing plant feeding heap leach pads. This is a standard setup except that the mine owner was in charge of all aspects of drill & blast design even though a contract drilling & blasting (shotfiring) service was being provided. The major problem was that the blasting operations were yielding massive amounts of oversize due to the jointed partially weathered nature of the granite. This was adversely affecting all downstream aspects of the operation as well reducing gold output as ore boulders were being dozed over the side of the mine as they were impinging on mining productivity. The oversize problem had to be solved as the mine was struggling to achieve design gold output. Significant design & trialing effort using minesite resources were utilised to reduce the oversize but this failed even when powder factors up to 1kg/bcm(1.68lb/yd) were used. Dyno Consult from Dyno Nobel were therefore called to investigate, review & trial options to reduce oversize from the top flitch.

"Introduction.During recent months the Bureau of Mines has conducted a detailed study of the slate industry with special reference to increased efficiency in its production, preparation and utilization. The results of these investigations will be incorporated in a forthcoming bulletin. The purpose of this preliminary paper is three-fold. A second purpose is to direct the thought of roofers toward the importance of proper laying of slate, and the third object is to acquaint the general public with its enduring qualities.Origin and character.Without entering into any detailed discussion of the origin and history of slate, a subject to be covered in the bulletin mentioned, it may be of interest to the general reader to know that slate is originally formed from mud or soft clay, carried down by streams and laid down in successive layers in deep water. The pressure of superimposed materials gradually compresses the clay into a firm rock known as shale. In many places this shale was, during the succeeding ages, subjected to intense pressure and folding due to mountain-building forces within the earth. This intense pressure, together with high temperature, changed the clay into other minerals such as mica, chlorite, and silica, which are very resistant to weathering, and also developed a very definite cleavage or splitting direction which characterizes the rock as slate. It is this property which renders slate of value for roofing, for, by using a broad chisel and a wooden mallet, a slate worker can readily split it into thin sheets which are later trimmed into rectangles of various sizes."
