Resolution Copper Mine is planned to be a 2000 m deep panel cave mine with virgin rock temperatures above 80°C in rock with a high crystalline silica content. The planned run-of-mine production rate is 120 kt/day. The project is in prefeasibility evaluation. This paper discusses features of the ventilation system design, which include multiple ventilation shafts with total flow of about 3000 m³/s and both surface and underground refrigeration systems with more than 140 MW total capacity. This will be a very challenging mine to ventilate, but this work has demonstrated that it will be technically achievable with the application of existing technology.

Coal workers’ pneumoconiosis (CWP) has re-emerged as a major concern in the Australian coal mining industry. Harmful effects from coal dust inhalation have been well documented, but the underlying causes and mechanisms of CWP are still debatable. Research conducted in the USA has proposed a plausible link between the presence of pyrite in coal and the prevalence of CWP. Reactive pyrite in coal oxidises under ambient mine conditions to produce various iron sulfate minerals such as melanterite, rozenite, roemerite and szomolnokite. Rapid reaction rates are promoted by the form (size and morphology) of the reactive pyrite present, which provides both increased surface area and increased porosity for easy air access to reaction sites. The products formed from reactive pyrite oxidation are often needle-like crystals with thicknesses in the order of 1–2 µm (eg melanterite and rozenite) and prismatic crystals with thicknesses less than 5 µm (eg roemerite) have been recorded. The densities of these minerals are significantly less than quartz, which makes them prone to becoming airborne with the normal coal dust. In fact, the mix of these mineral salts is commonly referred to as ‘fairy dust’ by mine workers due to the way they can become entrained and sparkle in the mine ventilation air, particularly if they occur in the upper part of a seam that is forming a coal roof. Examples are presented of the various products of reactive pyrite oxidation found in three Australian coal samples, which provide evidence of the physical and chemical mechanisms that would support the USA findings, particularly in terms of a source of bioavailable iron leading to increased inflammatory stress response.CITATION:Beamish, B B, Ward, C R and Chalmers, D, 2017. Fully-grouted roof bolts comprise more than 80% of the primary roof supports used in U.S. coal mines. However, nearly 1,500 MSHA reportable, non-injury roof falls occur each year, and most of these are attributable to failure of the roof bolt system. Anchorage failure is one failure mechanism for fully-grouted bolts. As roof deformation works its way upward, the bolts can become heavily loaded near their upper ends. If the applied load exceeds the anchorage, the bolts will simply pull out. Research dating back 30 yrs indicates that this type of anchorage failure is most likely when the roof rock is weak, just where roof support is most critical. In soft shale or coal roof, the small amount of data available in the literature indicates that 20-30 in of resin anchorage may be required to achieve the full capacity of the bolt. In other words, the “full resistance zone” of a 60 in bolt may actually be just 30-40 in. Despite its potential importance, there is no widely accepted anchorage test for fully grouted bolts. Standard pull tests have sometimes been employed, but they provide no information on the anchorage near the top of the bolt. An alternative, first described more than 25 yrs ago in the U.S., is the short-encapsulation pull test (SEPT). With this test, the bolt is installed with only a short (1 ft or less) tube of resin. In recent years variations of this test have become international standards. v

In spite of our deep conviction that it would be wrong for the United States to enter World War II, when, after Pearl Harbor, we were actually in it, I felt that I must do all I could to help. The country had been so good to me that I could not decently stay on the sidelines. My first thought was that I might help with supply and administration in the Air Force, as in World War I. So on the evening of Pearl Harbor I wired the chief of our Air Force in Washington saying that I had been on Gen. William Mitchell's staff in World War I and was offering my services again. I received a noncommital answer, but after a couple of weeks was told to take my physical examination. I passed it, but nothing further happened. After helping to make plans for the wartime operations of Summit King and Desert Silver, Dorothy and I went to New York to spend Christmas with Molly and Peter, both of whom were in college in the East. I had to complete a report on the Argonaut mine in California first, though the war made my recommendations of dubious validity. Before Christmas I received wires from Temple Bridgeman, Phil Wilson, and other friends who had taken positions with government agencies responsible for securing mineral products needed for war use. They urged me to join them. It was evidently a case of not whether but how I could be most useful. After six uncertain days with the family in New York I took the night train to Washington on the 28th of December. I had a hectic day there. First I saw Arthur Bunker and Phil Wilson at what became the Aluminum and Magnesium Division of the War Production Board. Their office was in an old converted barracks. During mining, crushing and handling the size of iron ore lumps decreases. Key factors in determining the amount and size of fines that are produced are the mechanical properties of the ore. In a continuation of earlier work on the same ores the mechanical properties of three Australian iron ores from Yandi, Koolan and Mt. Whaleback were determined. In particular, fracture toughness was investigated in greater detail by examining its relationship to crack length using the compact tension test. The elastic modulus and strength of the ores were also determined in flexure and compression. The results were interpreted using Weibull statistics, enabling the ores to be ranked according to strength and elastic modulus. These results, together with data on the mechanical response of the ores to stress and observations concerning the effect of mineralogy on cracking, provide a coherent understanding of the mechanisms involved when the ores fracture

The storage stability characteristics of a diesel type fuel were determined to evaluate the effect of the polar compounds in the fuel. These compounds, comprising most of the nitrogen and oxygen containing compounds and many sulfur containing compounds, were separated from the fuel with a chromatographic column. This fraction was further separated into three polar extracts by graded elution through the column. Each extract was characterized. A storage program using the depolarized fuel, the fuel as received, and blends of the extracts with both fuels, was conducted. Results showed that the removal of the more polar components stabilized the fuel. Blending the polar extracts with the original fuel and with the depolarized fuel in the same ratio as they existed originally and at two and three times the original ratio increased the amount of gum present before storage, but had little effect on the formation of additional gum during storage. Distillate fuels produced by commercial refining of petroleum contain traces of organic nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen compounds that are more polar4 than the remainder of the fuel. Recent laboratory studies by the Federal Bureau of Mines (1),6 in which these compounds were removed from a fuel, have shown that they influence its storage stability. The objective of this work was to determine the amount of these compounds present in a fuel and their effect upon its stability in storage. To evaluate the role of these polar compounds, it is necessary to remove them from the distillate fuel. Many can be removed by chemical treatment (2), but such treatment precludes reblending the polar components to approximate the original fuel composition. Solvent extraction is free of some of the criticism of chemical treatment, but it is more difficult because of the complex mixture from which compounds must be removed.

INJURY experience and employment data at all metal mines in the United States and Alaska are presented in this Information Circular for the calendar year 1958. This publication covers the metal mining industries, and contains statistical data on injuries and employment pertinent to metal mines, ore-dressing plants, and primary nonferrous smelters, refineries, and reduction plants. These operations report injury and employment information annually to the Bureau of Mines on a voluntary basis. The Bureau is authorized to make requests for such data, and the information submitted contributes immeasurably to the promotion of safety in the metal mining industry. Every effort has been made to make the annual canvass as complete as possible. This publication contains, along with production and development workers, the office employees at the mine location. The metal mines identified in this publication are classified according to the mineral ores mined; that is, copper, iron, lead-zinc, gold-silver lode, gold placer, and miscellaneous metals.

This paper will cover the problems confronting an owner when planning and estimating the cost of a proposed tunnel. Three factors are known: the length, size and the time allocated for the completion of the work. In general the difficulties encountered when driving a tunnel in California are the greatest at the lower elevations and in the Coast Range and are minimal in the Sierra Nevada mountains particularly in granitic formation. The writer will discuss the experience gained from observing the driving of about 120 miles of tunnel in California as well as the repairs of some tunnels. SIZE OF TUNNELS It is known that a small tunnel may be more costly to drive than one of somewhat larger dimensions. This fact was found to be true when a tunnel about 4,000 feet long was constructed to eliminate 7 miles of canal. The formation was lava so it was anticipated the ground would be self supporting because of the small bore. Actually the tunnel required support for most of its length and working conditions were poor. It became apparent that a larger size could have been driven at no additional cost and probably in less time. Ongoing development work on ultra-fine grinding for various applications at the Group?s concentrators has been conducted by Anglo Platinum over the last few years. Current potential applications for mainstream grinding and concentrate grinding are the subject of a group-wide research and development programme. The first 10 000-litre 2.6 MW IsaMill was jointly developed by Anglo Platinum, Xstrata Technology and Netszch for installation at the Western Limb Tailings Re-treatment project in Rustenburg, South Africa. The unit was commissioned in late 2003/early 2004, and has operated in an intermediate concentrate regrind application successfully since. This paper describes the operational performance to date, as compared with the original duty specifications and objectives. The first mainstream M10 000 IsaMill with a 3 MW drive will be operational in November 2006 at the Potgietersrus Platinum (PPL)?Platreef? Sandsloot Concentrator in South Africa?s Limpopo Province. The Bureau of Mines reviewed current technology in the refractories consuming industries and evaluated the impact of changes in technology on the supply and demand of refractories. Literature was searched and contacts were made with leading consumers and producers of refractories. The distribution of refractories by value of shipments to users was surveyed. The report shows that the percentage distribution of refractories sales to the consuming industries has remained essentially constant during the last decade but that substantial changes have occurred in the relative distribution of types of refractories. The trend in pyroprocessing technology in recent years has been toward higher temperatures, which require more costly refractories. This fact is reflected in the impressive gain in the dollar value of refractories sales, which in 1968 was about one-third greater than in 1960, and the rapid growth of refractories based on high-alumina, magnesia, zirconia, carbon, and other materials, at the expense of fire clay, silica, and chrome- based refractories. An appendix to the report contains refractories value and shipment data tabulated in a manner by which trends in the distribution of refractory types can be observed from 1955 to 1968. In addition, unit values are presented on a per-ton basis for comparison.

The mining industry responded to public concerns about use of cyanide by developing a voluntary certification to allow companies to demonstrate their commitment. The International Cyanide Code (Code) establishes standards for the manufacture, transportation and use of cyanide. Key concepts in closure planning to comply with the Code are to decommission all facilities related to cyanide operations and to provide a financial assurance mechanism for those activities. Code requirements may differ from state-specific regulations, but requirements are based on closure goals for protection of the human health and the environment. Only issues related to cyanide operations are required to be included in decommissioning demonstrations. For example, the disposal method of cyanide solution holding tanks and the cost must be included in the closure plan, but information regarding closure of roads is not required. Closure costs must be based on a third-party contractor as opposed to internal budgets. Compliance with the closure requirements of the Code allows companies to show their stockholders, lending institutions, and the public that their operations are environmentally responsible.

Accelerometers and pressure transducers, mounted in suspension components, can be used to monitor the ride of haulage trucks. Presently, it is difficult to tell what caused a jolt to the truck using either pressure or acceleration data alone. When information from a global positioning system (GPS) is recorded at the same time as shock pressures or acceleration data, the exact location of an event can be determined. Mine management can then determine what caused the jolt to the truck. This research is part of a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) project called "Engineering controls for reduction of jolting/jarring injuries in surface mines." NIOSH is investigating how the work environment of haulage truck drivers can be improved. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) notes that, between 1986 and 1995, 60% of the back injuries were to haulage truck drivers in metal/nonmetal surface mining. Personnel from Phelps Dodge suggested that combining acceleration data with information obtained from a GPS could generate results with a variety of uses. Therefore, researchers at the Spokane Research Laboratory (SRL) began investigating how to tie acceleration and GPS data together. It was originally thought that this tool would be used primarily for road and truck maintenance. However, as research progressed, it became apparent that it would also be useful in providing feedback about equipment operations and identifying unusual causes of jolting. Experimental approach Available components that function well by themselves were linked for the purpose of proof of concept. Using a Modular Mining Systems (MMS) product called Vital Signs, SRL researchers took an Aero-Marine Products (AMP) acceleration recorder and hardwired it to MMS Dispatch equipment already installed on a truck. AMP is one of several manufacturers of acceleration recorders frequently used to monitor freight during shipping. MMS Dispatch is used for production accounting and truck dispatching and uses GPS tracking. Through Vital Signs, an analog or digital alarm signal can be recorded. Steve Rhoades, of MMS, wrote unique code that links the Vitals Signs data and GPS location and stores this data in an ASCII log file. SRL researchers installed the equipment in a Caterpillar 793 haul truck. The result was a working prototype. Figures 1 and 2 show the instrument installation in the truck. The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

Our present longwall problems in Cape Breton can be grouped under five main classifications. These are: (1) Roof control on the face and on the main roadways leading thereto. (2) Transportation of coal along face and levels. (3) Mechanical loading at the face. (4) Safe method of conducting and applying power at the working faces. (5) Dust nuisance. The usual layout for longwall operation in Cape Breton is to have three, and sometimes four, faces in line with each other, the length of face being from 400 feet to 500 feet (see Figure 1), and producing between 425 and 500 tons per face. Each wall is serviced by a well constructed roadway for transportation of coal, men, and materials, and is operated as an independent unit. Each wall works under a regular cycle of operations: first, cutting and boring; second, drawing hardwood chocks, building midwalls, and shifting panlines; and third, loading. The present method of roof control and operation of longwall faces has developed through trial and error since the commencement of longwall miring in Cape Breton. The basic method of roof control in all longwalls in Cape Breton is: rigid support of the roof in the immediate vicinity of the working faces by hardwood blocks, as shown in Figure 2, accompanied by a cushion support furnished by continuous midwalls, 12 feet wide, constructed of stone obtained from the waste and spaced at 50-foot centres. These midwalls are kept forward to within 4 feet to 10 feet of the working face and allow a gradual subsidence of overhead strata, thus preventing any sudden break at the working face.

Several years ago, we used an electric analogue computer to study the effect of vertical fractures on the productivity of wells in expanding fluid-drive reservoirs. The results of this work were used both as a guide to research and as a basis for the design of actual fracturing operations. In 1958, Dyes, Kemp and Caudle' published portions of the data from this study. The results were released in 1959 to service companies for use in fracturing guides. The purpose of this note is to discuss the experimental conditions and assumptions which were made to derive the information which is already partially a matter of public record. ASSUMPTIONS This study applies to fractures which extend in a vertical plane symmetrically from the well. For simplicity, we chose to study the case of a well in a square drainage area with its fractures extending toward two of its nearest neighbors. We have assumed no migration of fluid across the boundary of this area. The quadrant shown in Fig. 1 models this system. We made the usual assumptions that the reservoir is homogeneous and isotropic, that the fluid is homogeneous and that production is effected by fluid-expansion drive. We also assumed that the fracture extends from top to bottom of the reservoir. Of more practical interest is our assumption that the fracture does not change the size of the drainage area. This premise is appropriate if all the wells in the reservoir are fractured in the same way. But where a single well is fractured, its drainage area may be enlarged at the expense of its neighbors. This could be of economic importance. The assumption that the fracture will not extend beyond the established drainage area of the well also limits the application of the results. Such long frac- tures will yield benefits in excess of those predicted here. When we assume homogeneity, we disregard the frequently observed zone of damage in the vicinity of the well. Where damage is severe, the benefits resulting from by-passing it will far exceed those predicted by this study. All comparisons were made of systems producing in the semi-steady state. By this we mean that equal volumes contributed equally to flow (pressure was dropping at a uniform rate throughout the system) when the rate of flow was observed. When establishing an underwater testing site for the energy measurements of the explosives, the dimensions of the measuring pool have to be measured to find out what is the maximum weight for the test charge. Secondly one has to decide the distance between the pressure gauge and the shooting point. Thirdly the pool has to be calibrated because of the reflections of the explosions by measuring the bubble periods of the calibration charges. The calibration shots can also be used to estimate the minimum weight of the explosive charge for the reliable energy measurements by calculating the shock, gas heave and total energy values and their standard deviations.

A mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms was enriched from Acid Mine Drainage (AMD) samples collected from several chalcopyrite mines in China,which can leach copper from chalcopyrite effectively. Its tolerance to chalcopyrite was brought up to 80 g/L after being adapted to gradually increased concentrations of chalcopyrite. The effects of several leaching variables on copper recovery in Stirred Tank Reactor had been investigated. The ore contained chalcopyrite (62.2%) and galena (25.6%) as the main sulfide minerals. The results of the tests show that it is possible, operating at 8% of pulp density to attain copper extraction of 75% in 44 days. The leaching rate of chalcopyrite tends to increase with the dissolution of total iron. Microscopic counts of microorganisms in the solution tend to be higher at low pH range. Furthermore, the analyses of leached residues indicate that the passivation of this chalcopyrite is mainly due to the formation of a mass of jarosite and anglesite (about 48.3% and 21.7% in residue respectively), other than elemental sulphur layer. The bacterial community composition was analyzed by using amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA). Two moderately thermophilic bacteria species were identified as Leptospi-rillum ferriphilum and Acidithiobacillus caldus, with different proportion in the bio-pulp, 67% and 33%, respectively.

Mr Zadkin had served on the Committee continuously since the inception of the O.F.S. Branch and records showed that he had only failed to attend three General Meetings in over nine years. The Chairman expressed the gratitude of the Branch for Mr Zadkin's invaluable services to the Institute, congratulated him on his well earned promotion and wished him well in his new position. INDUCTION OF CHAIRMAN The Chairman introduced Mr N. A. Honnet to the meeting by briefly outlining his past career and, after congratulating him on his election, called upon him to take the Chair. In congratulating the out-going Chairman on a very successful term of office, Mr Honnet said that due to the absence of many Committee Members for a large portion of the year Mr Kirchner had carried a heavy burden, and he moved a vote of thanks and appreciation for Mr Kirchner's efforts. This was carried unanimously. GENERAL BUSINESS There were no points raised under this heading. MINING AND METALLURGICAL CONGRESS The Chairman called on Mr W. R. Lawrie to give his talk on aspects of the Mining and Metallurgical Congress recently held in Britain. This presentation was illustrated with photographic slides and proved of great interest to Members. Mr D. D. Waterman proposed a vote of thanks to Mr Lawrie and the Chairman then asked Mr R. C. J. Goode to contribute to Mr Lawrie's address. Mr Goode thanked Mr Kirchner for his efforts during his very successful term of office and congratulated the in-coming Chairman and Vice-Chairman on their election. He then gave a brief talk on aspects of the Congress not dealt with in Mr Lawrie's address. These included the industry's requirements of graduates, the necessity of their rapid advancement and the desirability of sending such young men to attend future Congresses. Mr Goode announced that two symposiums will be sponsored by the Institute next year, one on Tunnelling and the other on Open Cast Workings.

The Anaconda Company, through its wholly owned subsidiary The Anaconda Company (Canada) I,td., has investigated, optioned and partially developed a large tonnage of iron ore amenable to magnetic concentration. The reserves are located in north central Ontario and occur within a twenty-two mile belt of layered and intricately folded metamorphic rocks, close to the north contact of an igneous complex of granite and pegmatite. There are two main ore deposits. Briarcliffe is a steep to vertically dipping body 100 to 500 feet wide and over a mile long. The Two Mile Lake deposit is flat dipping and confined to an open, asymmetrical syncline; it is approximately a mile wide and 250 to 4.00 feet thick. On its flat easterly plunge, it is saucer-like in shape and is amenable to open-pitting for an east-west distance of several thousand feet. Magnetometer surveys, confirmed by drilling, indicate at least a three mile eastward extension of this deposit. Location and Access: The property is located in the Kowkash Mining District of northwestern Ontario, roughly forty-four miles north of the community of Nakina on the main line of the Canadian National Railroad. (Fig. 1) Access during the exploration period was entirely by airplane from Nakina. (Fig. 2) More recently, Nakina itself was connected to the highway network in the Longlac-Geraldton area. The property is roughly 190 miles by existing and proposed railroad from the Great Lakes waterway system. The Trans-Canada pipeline moving natural gas from western to eastern Canada passes through Geraldton roughly 70 miles south of the property. Topography: The surface features in the area are typical of a sizeable portion of the Precambrian Canadian Shield area. Many lakes, low swampy areas, and glacial moraine-type features are common in this recently glaciated area. The average elevation is between 800 and 900 feet above sea level, and the relief is probably less than 100 feet with the greater portion of the area less than 50 feet. The topographic "highs" are formed either by outcrops that were resistant to glacial erosion or by moraines, eskers and drumlins which were deposited upon the recession of the glaciers. The better mineralized zones, composed chiefly of quartz and magnetite, commonly form ridges resistant to erosion and weathering. Previous Work: Because of the obvious outcrop of the magnetite-rich beds and knowledge gained from early developments within the general region, it is conceivable that the presence of the iron formations has been known for a good many years. The area is included in studies made by L. F.
