The wearing of self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, although relatively safe if proper precautions are taken, is dangerous if defective apparatus -is worn, if men with inadequate training, experience, and physical requirements are used, or if improper procedure is followed. This is proved by the fact that at least 26 men are known to have lost their lives while wearing-oxygen breathing apparatus since its introduction in this country about 35 years ago. Self-contained oxygen breathing apparatus, commonly called "mine rescue apparatus" and sometimes improperly referred to as "oxygen helmets," is the only equipment that can be used for respiratory protection against poisonous mine gases, regardless of concentration or against an atmosphere containing little or no oxygen.3/ Apparatus of this type was introduced in this country in 1907, and since that time it has been widely used in conducting rescue and recovery work after mine fires and explosions and in some other work. All oxygen breathing apparatus used in this country before 1918 was imported from Europe, and although this equipment provided safer, more rapid means of conducting recovery work after mine disasters, there were many mechanical deficiencies in the apparatus which resulted in the death of some of the wearers. This led to the research and experimental work by the Bureau of Mines that resulted in the development and manufacture of more reliable and efficient types of apparatus in this country.

"Current understanding of the mechanisms by which glassy and crystalline thin ribbons are formed in high speed continuous casting processes is considered. A computer model of the combined heat and momentum transfer during melt spinning has been developed. The influence of roll velocity and of heat transfer coefficient (between the melt and the roll) on the temperature and velocity distributions within the melt puddle is analysed and the thickness of the extracted ribbon computed. The relative importance of heat and momentum transfer under different conditions is assessed and differences between the casting of crystalline and amorphous strip highlighted.IntroductionHigh speed continuous casting of thin metallic ribbon and strip is currently of considerable interest both to metal processers and to those studying process mechanisms. The practical interest arises both from the potential economic benefits to be gained from a shorter and more energy-efficient production route and from the ability to obtain extended and uniform thin strip having a metastable microcrystalline or amorphous structure with enhanced or unique properties. The latter arise from the rapid solidification associated with the cooling of very thin sections of melt brought into intimate thermal contact with one or two rapidly moving heat sinks.The principal processes for casting thin strip include free jet, chill-block melt-spinning (GBMS) (1), melt drag (MD) (2), planar flow casting (PFG) (3) and twin-roll casting (TRG) (4). For the first three of these, all essentially variants of melt-spinning, melt flows through a nozzle onto the circumferential surface of a rapidly rotating roll, whereas for TRG the melt passes into the nip between two contra-rotating rolls. We shall be concerned in this paper with the single-roll melt spinning processes only. For these, a puddle is established where the melt contacts the roll surface and the length of this puddle l is a function of the process conditions, notably the circumferential velocity of the roll Us and the volumetric flow rate of the melt Q. The contact time between any point on the roll surface and this puddle, or residence time eR(= l /Us) determines the thickness of ribbon t extracted from the puddle. This thickness, in turn, partly governs the cooling rate T and the amount of undercooling in the melt and thus the microstructure of the solidified ribbon."

Transporting coal by means of conveyor belts is very common in Australian underground coal mines. Major conveyor belt-related mining incidents are now relatively infrequent as a result of recent improvements in engineering standards and use of fire-resistance materials. However, conveyor belts have the potential for incidents capable of causing either personal or structural damage. In addition, any unexpected break down of rolling components or failure of belts creates a significant interruption to the production that is a major concern for operators whose responsibility is to achieve the optimum mining production.Currently, underground coal conveyor belts are examined for the presence of any overheating, smouldering or unsafe conditions likely to cause a fire. Periodic inspection of operating conveyor belts is carried out with the aim of detecting any local heat sources in an early stage. This includes temperature measurements of the driving head, idlers and rollers using hand-held temperature sensors such as infrared cameras or laser temperature sensors. The disadvantages of current conveyor belt temperature monitoring systems include high labour and equipment costs, safety risk to personnel who are in close proximity to moving conveyors, the ability to take line of site measurements only and potential for missed overheated idlers. Some of the conveyor idlers in underground coal operations cannot be accessed for traditional temperature measurements. This introduces a significant risk to the operation of critical infrastructure.A distributed temperature sensing (DTS) system can be used to develop an advanced conveyor belt temperature monitoring system that provides real-time, accurate and continuous temperature measurements along a conveyor belt particularly at the rolling components. The DTS system comprises of fibre optic detection cable, DTS controller and interfacing module. The advantages of the system include the accuracy, low-cost, easy installation, robustness, safety, immunity to radio frequency and electromagnetic interference, real-time data collection, and secure data transmission. This paper presents a scoping study on the development and utilisation of a fibre optic-based DTS system for underground coal conveyor belts. The mechanism of heat generation, the operation temperature range and the installation issues of fibre optic cable along the conveyor belt particularly in close proximity to each end of the spindle on every idler will be discussed.CITATION:Aminossadati, S M and Yang, B, 2013. Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

Safety and health professionals recognize that training is a critical element of any effective safety and health program. An extensive literature survey has led the authors to conclude that we are at the beginning of a revolution in training due to changes in the demographics of the workforce, the rapid growth of technology, and the universal ascendance of the information age. Of present major concern in the mining industry is how to provide appropriate training for an aging workforce and concurrently develop training for the expected influx of new and less experienced miners as older workers retire. This report explores the key issues in the changing safety and health training area as identified by the multidisciplinary team of NIOSH researchers who conducted the literature survey. Issues include generational differences between newer mine workers and the present workforce with respect to their physical, psychological, social, and cultural characteristics; their learning styles and work expectations; and the impact of technology. Some preliminary conclusions are offered for future training needs.

"Up to the last 10 or 15 years, responsibility for accidents in mines was generally, though not universally, placed upon the person or persons immediately involved. Present-day thought is rapidly veering toward holding the industry responsible for accidents, with ultimate payment of the bill by the consumer, if financial expenditure should be necessary. While it is undoubtedly correct in principle that responsibility for accidents in and around mines should be shouldered by the employer and while it is probable that as time passes the burden will become even more definitely than now that of the mining companies, on the other hand it is an undeniable fact that large numbers of accidents occur through acts of omission or of commission of some person, very frequently the victim of the accident being the offender.Out of about 3,000 persons killed every rear in our -mines and quarries, nearly half or approximately 1,500 of the fatalities are due to falls of overlying material or of persons, about 500 to haulage, about 350 to fires and explosions, about 125 to explosives, approximately the same number to electricity, and about 300 to various miscellaneous accidents.Generally the accidents from falls involve but one or two persons at a time, and the tendency is now as it always has been to charge the victim or possibly a coworker with the responsibility. Usually this sort of accident occurs at or near a working face (statistics indicate that about 80 per cent of fatalities from falls of roof or rib occur near the face), and as it is Generally agreed that it is the duty of the worker to keep his working place safe, the worker and especially the face worker is given the blame in case of accident."

ALL the mining machinery of the Penn Iron Mining Co. has been operated by electric power for several years and when another shovel for stockpile loading was required the advantages of an electric shovel were naturally considered. After considerable study, serious objections suggested themselves the use of a shovel operated directly by electrical apparatus by reason of the complicated control, severe service on the motors FIG. 1.-ELECTRO-HYDRAULIC SHOVEL FIG:. 2-THE SHOVEL AS IT WAS OPERATED CINDER CONSTRUCTION. It was finally decided to construct an electro-hydraulic shovel using water under pressure to perform all the necessary operations except that of propelling, for which a separate motor was best suited. A car body with boom, dipper handle and dipper of late design, but without any of the steam machinery, was purchased. A motor-driven centrifugal pump, a pressure tank, an air tank, a small air compressor and water cylinders with plungers, pistons and valves, were installed in place of the; steam equipment. CONTINUED expansion of gold mining in 1935 led to further developments in treatment methods. In base metals and non-metallics progress is also noted, coincident with greater activity. Statistics are not available yet for 1935 but the trend is shown by 1934 when nonferrous ore mined in the United States was 35,840,737 tons, or 45 per cent more than in 1933. The amount concentrated was 27,167,530 tons or 75.80 per cent of the ore mined, and flotation was used in whole or part on over 96 per cent of the ore subjected to concentration. In the crushing field a new model of the Fahrenwald crusher is promised soon. The Symons fine-reduction cone crusher and Traylor secondary crusher continue to gain as intermediate crushers. A new book entitled "Crushers for Stone and Ore" by William T. W. Miller appeared. Coal production and coal use for electric power generation are diminishing worldwide. Germany will phase out lignite mining as well as lignite and hard coal-powered electricity generation by 2038. In the United States, coal production has dropped by more than 50% since 2006, including in key coal production states like West Virginia and Wyoming (EIA 2021). Closing mines and power plants across entire mining regions has significant socio-economic impacts. Existing industries must be focused on the post-mining economy by attracting new industries, and implementing job retraining programs for displaced workers, as former mining regions transition towards agricultural, industrial and recreational use. This paper examines the German “exit from coal” under the 17 UN Sustainability Goals and illustrates the complex procedures, interrelationships, risks, and rewards of the transition towards renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydrogen, and bioresources.

"Agnico-Eagle (AE) has been operating their Kittila Mine in Northern Finland since 2008. The mine has experienced considerable ore flow problems with ratholing, bridging and freezing in their mill feed bin since start up. In the first winter of operation, the entire central portion of the contents of the cylindrical flat-bottomed 2000 tonne mill feed bin froze. Flow was erratic and could only be achieved through small diameter ratholes. To maintain a reasonable, albeit limited, feed to the mill, the bin had to be kept less than ½ full and a portable steam generator was brought in to melt the frozen agglomerates that frequently blocked the outlets. The combination of limited surge capacity and frequent outages required the crushing plant to operate 24/7 and resulted in inconsistent production levels and high operating costs.AE had planned to expand the processing plant to increase throughput by about 30% when they transitioned from open pit to underground ore. These plans presented an opportunity to improve the material handling.To avoid the problems experienced with the original mill feed bin, AE enlisted Jenike & Johanson Ltd. (J&J) to test samples of the ore, and based on the measured flow properties to provide design recommendations to ensure that the new mill feed bin would operate reliably. The new 2000 tonne expanded flow mill feed bin and apron feeder were installed in 2014 and are now supplying almost 93% of the total mill feed with the remaining coming from the original bin.IntroductionIn early 2009, AE engaged J&J to visit their then recently opened Kittila mine and mill in Northern Finland (Figure 1). Over the first half-year of operation, production had been restricted in the ore handling and storage system by flow problems such as ratholing, bridging and freezing including blockages of chutes and hoppers as a result of frozen fines buildup and large frozen agglomerates. AE wanted to increase production in the existing open pit mine and mill feed operation and also wanted to avoid similar ore handling problems when they commissioned the new underground mining system under development at that time."

The coal-mining industry of Nova Scotia, particularly of the island of Cape Breton, today faced as no other industry with economic problems calling for progressive engineering with production on an economic basis, must soon enter upon a phase of reorganization wherein all factors conducive to the cost of producing coal relative to the prolongation of the life of the collieries with the ultimate winning of the maximum submarine area must be closely reviewed. Bearing this in mind and applying the process of elimination to coal-mining costs generally, we are left with only three channels through which we may approach the problem of cost reduction in producing coal: (a) intensive mechanization (b) reduction in the cost of labour (c) reduction in the cost of materials. Assuming that mechanization has reached an economic stage and that labour costs have reached an economic limit, we must turn our attention to the general material costs, which may be classified as 'live' and 'dead' costs. The former take in all things which can be accredited with a fractional depreciation and written off the balance sheet over a period of years. On the other hand, the ?dead'costs-of which the cost of supporting the underground workings form part must be completely written off: for these, no return may be expected, other than the economic return in the reduction of the cost per ton of coal produced.

There is a saying, ?If it moves, it vibrates.? This is especially true in our modern industrial environments, where workers use powered tools, machinery, vehicles, and heavy equipment. How workers are affected by these elements of the industrial working environment is a concern of health professionals, govern­ments, and scientists around the world. How to adequately assess the effects of human vibration exposure is an equally important issue. The human body comprises a dynamic structure that is living, intelligent, and complex. Consequently, it is not unreasonable to consider that exposing the body to an array of vibration environments would result in outcomes that are not necessarily simple or easily predictable. Sensations caused by vibration may include nausea, annoyance, discomfort or pain, and exhilaration or pleasure. Many factors contribute to the effects of vibration on humans, including the characteristics of the motion and the exposed indi­vidual, the activities of the exposed individual, and various elements of the environment. There have been attempts to summarize the effects of occupational vibration exposures by simply recommending the avoidance of certain frequencies of vibration or by providing a graphical method, i.e., a single curve displaying all human responses to all frequencies. However, such efforts have not withstood the scrutiny of scientific research and analysis. Thus, attendees and participants at this professional gathering now have the rare opportunity to benefit from the technological advances and new scientific research to enhance their understanding of human responses to vibration that suggest more than a simplistic approach. In the tradition of the First American Conference on Human Vibration (1st ACHV) held in Morgantown, WV, June 2006, the 2nd ACHV provides a forum for scientists, engineers, medical doctors, industrial hygienists, and educators to learn and advance research and education in the specialized area of human body vibration. The conference was organized by the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, University of Illinois at Chicago, with support from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. As with the first conference, the 2nd ACHV provides the unique opportunity to learn about the current activities of peers and colleagues and to exchange information on topics of interest such as human response, human modeling, experimental design, sensors, new technologies, and epidemiological studies of human responses to hand-transmitted and whole-body vibration. The conference organizers hope that the publication of these conference proceedings continues to foster new research and technological advances to reduce health hazards associated with occupational vibration exposures.

MINERAL production in almost all European countries suffered a sharp setback because of the war. Plants were damaged, transportation facilities disrupted, and labor dispersed and demoralized. Since the war, due to lack of confidence and economic stability, there has been little incentive to rebuild and expand the mineral industries even though a big demand at high prices exists for mineral products. Most mining and metallurgical companies in Europe hesitate to invest their capital because of the tendency towards nationalizing industry, high taxes, and low output of labor, as well as the deficiency of mine supplies and equipment within their countries. In short, they do not have faith in the future, and for these same reasons and fears most of the mining companies in America will not risk capital investment in Europe. In Europe, including the United Kingdom, free enterprise has been losing ground and as a result the foundation of their economic welfare is being undermined. American mining interests willing to take the initiative could help in counteracting this influence if a way were found for them to co-operate with the European producer without too great a risk.

Most tailings storage facility (TSF) failures occur in active, upstream-type TSFs, often due to extreme and unexpected weather conditions—specifically, heavy rainfall and strong winds. This case study of a TSF in southern Arizona examines the use of the optimum safe beach distance (Doptimal, the optimum distance between the crest and decant pond) as a tool for monitoring geotechnical stability and reducing catastrophic failures. A digital model of the TSF was used to determine the critical beach distance (Dcritical) under normal weather conditions, and Doptimal was then determined by adding incremental distances to account for the effects of heavy rainfall (Drainfall) and strong winds (Dwind). To overcome accessibility issues, a drone was used to map the TSF geometry and create a digital model. This model served as the basis for conducting a coupled stress-seepage, finite-element (FEM) analysis with a safety factor of 2.0 to assess geotechnical stability (Dcritical). The safe beach distance increments were determined using the PMP (probable maximum precipitation) and possible maximum wind speed. Based on this analysis, the optimal safe beach distance at the study site was identified as 202.2 m. Since the current beach distance (371 m) exceeds this value, the TSF was considered to be stable and satisfied the design safety factor of 2.0. However, this distance should be reassessed periodically to account for changes in the TSF geometry and other conditions. Furthermore, it applies only TSFs that are well-managed and feature a smooth, non-undulating beach surface with a consistent slope.

Since 2003, there has been an unprecedented growth in the demand for engineering, technical and project services in the mineral industries. This demand for services became evident in Australia earlier than many other markets and has since spread globally. This growth has created significant issues for the strategic direction and planning by the service provider. Such strategic questions include:- how fast to grow, how to recruit, train and integrate new staff, what market sectors to service, the selection of targeted customer sectors and managing strategic growth with short term demands and commercial reality. These factors are discussed using in depth experiences and examples that illustrate these strategic approaches. The relevance of this new industry environment to New Zealand services will be highly discussed.

INTRODUCTION CHURCHILL river was named for John Churchill, first Duke of Marl-borough and third Governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the latter part of the 17th century, some fifty years after the ill-fated Danish expedition, led by Munck, had abandoned the site of the now famous seaport of Churchill, as a worthless, cold, disease-ridden country. No other attempts were made to explore the interior until the river basin became a part of the grant to the Hudson's Bay Company and began to play its part in furnishing the luxury of fine furs to civilized people as it had furnished the necessities of food and dress for untold centuries to uncivilized natives. This was the sole contribution of the region to the economic life of the country for some two hundred and fifty years, until 1926, when the power site at Island Falls was discovered by engineers seeking a cheap power source to make possible the development of the great ore-body at Flin Flon. DRAINAGE BASIN OF CHURCHILL RIVER The river is some 1,325 miles long. Rising in the headwaters of the Beaver river, in east-central Alberta, it flows in an easterly direction across Saskatchewan and northeasterly across Manitoba to Hudson bay, through a remarkable basin of some 115,500 square miles, only 6,000 square miles less than the area of the British Isles. A journey down this river leads one through three distinct belts of country, each vastly different from the others geologically and in surface characteristics. For the first five hundred miles the river flows through a basin of 36,000 square miles of the great central-plains country, which is covered with fertile soil and carpeted in its southern part with prairie grass, which gradually gives way to the mixed forests of poplar, spruce, birch, and jackpine in the northern and eastern sections: About midway across Saskatchewan, bald-headed knolls and ridges begin to make their appearance as the river meets the western margin of the Canadian Shield. Then, for some seven hundred miles, it passes through country underlain by the pre-Cambrian rocks of the Shield, which continue to within one hundred miles of Hudson bay. Here the character of the country again changes to a low, clay plain underlain by sandstone, and through this 'clay belt' the river flows between steep clay banks, to empty into Hudson bay.

Uranium activity has introduced a comparatively new hazard to United States mining. In addition to the hazards common to all mines, uranium mines have a complex health problem of radiation damage. Like many new processes, radiation and nuclear energy can be made to serve man in many useful ways when properly understood and handled; but, like fire, gases, and electricity, their potential dangers must be known and respected, and appropriate precautions must be taken or death may result. Since 1950 the Public Health Service has been conducting basic investigations on exposure to radon and its daughter products and the effect of exposure upon the health of miners in uranium mines of the Western States. The Bureau of Mines assisted in several of these investigations, especially in mines on Indian lands. The studies have shown that a serious health hazard exists from radioactive exposure that might cause lung cancer if continued over a number of years. The Public Health Service report, Control of Radon and Daughters in Uranium Mines and Calculations on Biologic Effects,6/ shows that 55 percent of the uranium mines employing 64 percent of the miners had atmospheric concentrations more than five times the working level now accepted as reasonably safe for industrial exposures. Extensive control measures are necessary to reduce these concentrations to the suggested working level of less than 300 micromicrocuries of total radon daughter products per liter of air.

The initial evaluation of a coal deposit often raises uncertainty with regard to the accuracy of the reported Resources and Reserves. Reconciliation of results from mining and beneficiation with the original raw field data highlights deficiencies in original estimations. Credible Resource and Reserve estimation forms the basis on which an entire mining enterprise is motivated, initiated, funded, and established as a commercially viable proposition. This is required for sustainable extraction purposes and to support vital downstream industries such as power generation. Accurate determination of the density of the matrix of the material being evaluated is the key to credible values being obtained for Resources and Reserves. Losses between 15% and 20% of the Resource/Reserve can be realized if incorrect densities are applied to the tonnage derivation. Coal plies and particles have different relative densities, determined by the maceral composition, rank, and mineral and moisture content. These factors in turn contribute to the moisture, volatile matter, ash and carbon contents of a coal, which affect the overall density of the raw coal. More specifically, the relationship of ash to density and the effective matrix porosity were found to be critical in solving the greater majority of the problems in predictive calculations. A major deficiency identified is the inability to determine effective porosity, allowing absorption of adventitious moisture and altering the mass of the core sample. Although the volume of the raw material is altered through crushing, the change in mass after controlled air-drying, used with the original geometrical volume of the raw material, provides a credible air-dry density and allows the determination of the volumetric change related to effective porosity. This parameter can be validated through the evaluation of proximate ash using the ash-adjusted algorithm and a correction for the inherent moisture applied to also give a credible relative density value for an air-dried sample. A combination of theoretical, empirical, and reconciliatory evaluations of the available data, taken from the exploration phase through the mining process to final production, has shown that an integrated approach using the ash-adjusted density (AAD) methodology, in conjunction with other evaluative techniques, provides credible results with a considerably higher degree of accuracy than is currently possible.
