The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

Science Applications, Inc. has developed for the U.S. Bureau of Mines a rapid response radon monitor capable of accurately responding within three minutes to changing radon levels of magnitude from 100 to 10,000 pCi/1, typical of the levels in working uranium mines. The instrument weighs 17 pounds, is sized 12" x 10" x 6", and is capable of 8 hours of continuous portable operation with a self-contained, rechargeable battery power source. Residual chamber contamination from a radon level allowed to remain in the chamber for 90 minutes is about 10 percent, decaying about a factor of two in one hour. The instrument sensitivity is a nominal 0.1 cpm/(pCi/1), with a background count rate of less than 1 cpm.

The panic bars (and associated linkages and electrical circuitry) that are defined in this document are a machine operator-actuated control for the emergency deenergization of the tram motors on self-propelled, electric and diesel face equipment; including haulage equipment such as shuttle cars. There are nine basic types of panic bars (and several variations) that are recommended in this document, but all of the panic bars are characteristically of the "fire door" type that is frequently encountered on outside exit doors of many public and some commercial buildings. It is also the intent of the following panic bar designs that, when emergency brakes are added to the face equipment machinery for which they are required, that they be designed and hooked up so that actuation of the panic bar will result in automatic application of the emergency brakes (immediately following the deenergization of the tram motors). The following panic bar design requirements are a restatement of the proposed requirements defined in the Federal Register, requirements cited in 'Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Devices for Deenergization of Self-Propelled Electric Face Equipment/ Automatic Emergency Brakes" by C. E. Lester and J. D. Greenhalgh of MESA, and Bendix recommendations that were formulated as a result of discussions with personnel at the various machine manufacturers and underground coal mines that we surveyed, discussions with G. L. Judy (our consultant), etc:

"The Bureau of Mines and the State of Colorado are cooperating in an investigation of the oil shales of Colorado. in this report the yields and the results of analyses of the oil and, gas produced from a number of oil-shale samples from the principal deposits of Colorado and other oil-shale States, are compared with samples from Scotland and Australia, where the oil-shale industry has had its greatest commercial development, and also with a sample from Brazil *here extensive oil-shale deposits are found shale samples were not selected as being representative of the different deposits, but they illustrate the wide variation in the nature of the organic matter of different oil shales.A further study is being made of the chemical composition of the shale, distribution of nitrogen and sulphur. in the products, temperatures at which organic matter decomposes, and the results will be presented in subsequent Papers, With complete data available on the chemical composition of the shales, it may be possible to explain some of the differences in the nature of the products from the various shales,Most of the work described herein was done under the supervision of M. A new analytical formula for predicting ground vibrations induced by blasting is proposed. One factor accounts for geometrical spreading. One factor corresponds to inelastic attenuation. The geometrical spreading function is based on likely source geometries, idealized as either square-root, cube-root or site-specific scaling, and on the propagation characteristics of predominant wave types. The inelastic attenuation is approximated by an exponential function. The empirical constants in these functions are backcalculated from field measurements. Regression analysis has been performed on twenty-three sets of measured data in order to determine the validity and the effectiveness of the proposed method. In many cases, the proposed method gives better correlation than the conventional method. In most of the remaining cases, there was no difference between the two methods. Best-fit lines given by the proposed method fit the data trend very well, especially at large scaled distances. At large distances the proposed method gives a prediction much closer to the actual values than the conventional methods. The statistical analysis shows not much difference between square-root, cube-root or site-specific scalings.

"Automated information systems are being developed very rapidly in Europe. In France, Belgium and West Germany, more than 70% of the coal production is controlled by these installations. Information on both product ion and the mine environment is produced. For example, at one mine in France the system records the operating times of the compressors and of the refrigeration pumps, counts the number of coal cars passing the unloading point, and controls the principal conveyors and the loading /unloading of the storage bins. In addition, the ventilation air velocity, the methane content and the carbon monoxide content in the return air entry are recorded; an alarm is triggered and the current to the conveyors cut when the gas content exceeds a critical level. The recorded information is used at four levels: (1) for immediate action, (2) for daily reports, (3) for monthly reports and (4) for long-term studies. For example, when any conveyor is stopped for more than 10 minutes, the system controller immediately telephones to learn of the reason. At the end of a shift, the load factor of the conveyors is computed; then monthly an analysis of the causes of low load factors is made. The presentation describes in detail the system that has been installed in more than 20 mines in France."

It is well documented that a significant amount of the new PGM (Platinum Group Minerals) production that is coming on stream now, and over the next few years, is to come from the UG-2 reef. Clearly the reservations, or perhaps the perceived reservations, attached to the processing of this ore are no longer there. What were the metallurgical issues that delayed the exploitation of the PGM values from this reef? Traditional furnaces treating Merensky concentrates were not able to accept the concentrate produced from a UG-2 plant due to the relatively high chromite content of this product. The chromite reports to an insoluble spinel phase that accretes in the furnace, resulting in the necessity to shutdown and dig the furnace out periodically. This was clearly not an attractive economic option, so producers stayed away from it in the early days. The Merensky ore had all higher base metal credits anyway, and you needed them to get a matte fall, so there was no driving force to look seriously at the UG-2 reef. Platinum demand at this time could be easily met from the Merensky ore, so the motivation to tackle more complex ores was not there. The low price of PGMs meant that these operations were not particularly profitable and there was little effort directed at improving the operations. Concentrators were generally not run very efficiently and the emphasis was on cost reduction through increasing milling rates.

The historic Getchell property is currently being mined from the Getchell Main Underground workings, a foot wall extension of the Getchell open pit deposits along the Getchell fault. Drift-and-fill techniques are used to extract the ore through a ramp access. The adjacent Turquoise Ridge deposit is currently under development via two vertical shafts. Together, the two mines will continue to provide feed to the Getchell's 3,200 tpd mill/autoclave circuit, taking Getchell Gold from its current production rate of 200,000 ounces (Au) per annum, to over 400,000 ounces (Au) per annum by 1999.

The stability of paste fill bulkheads forms an integral part of a successful paste fill system. Bulkheads are constructed at the draw points of open stopes to contain paste fill while the initial pour cures and forms a consolidated plug. Mobilization of uncured paste fill as a result of a bulkhead failure can lead to significant consequences, including endangering the safety of personnel, property damage and production losses and delays. The loading conditions in the paste fill and the resultant lateral loads on the bulkheads are complex and are dependent on many factors. This paper presents a case study of several paste fill bulkhead failures; the results of an in-situ pressure monitoring program to ascertain the pressure loads, and the subsequent paste fill bulkhead evaluation.

Since the commencement of its activities in Huelva in 1970, Atlantic Copper has maintained a course of action that has been more demanding than the successive environmental legislations current at different times. As its primary objective it has sought compatibility between the protection of the environment and both its industrial activity and the social and economic development of the area in which its Metallurgical Complex is located. For this reason, since the seventies it has maintained a continuous programme of investments which have allowed it to attain its present environmental situation. As a consequence of the Environmental Policy of Atlantic Copper, in April 1998 it obtained certification for its Integrated System of Environmental Management (SIGMA) according to international standard IS0-14001, and under European Community Regulation 1836/93 (replaced by the 76112001) for the Eco-Management and Eco-Audit System (EMAS). The SIGMA formalises the environmental management practices of Atlantic Copper and engages it to have available a system that can be fully audited. Atlantic Copper was the first European Company in the non-ferrous metallurgical sector to obtain both the UNE-EN-ISO 14001 certification and the EMAS registration. The present paper reviews the actions by Atlantic Copper in environmental matters that have allowed it to achieve its present position. It also describes the coming stages of improvement planned and the modifications to be carried out in the near future, in particular the criteria for the selection of technologies on the basis of the concept of BAT (Best Available Techniques) introduced by the European Union, and always guided by the final objective of converting Atlantic Copper into a reference within the sector, comparable to the best designed and operated installations in the world.

The concept of a ‘critical velocity zone’ in the longwall goaf environment for the development of a spontaneous combustion event has been supported by numerical modelling. However, there is no experimental data available for Australian coals to show ventilation effects on the self-heating incubation behaviour of broken coal in the longwall goaf. A preliminary study using incubation testing has been completed on three high volatile bituminous coals (A, B and C) with R70 self-heating rate values of 3.86°C/h, 3.15°C/h and 2.09°C/h and moisture contents of 11.3 per cent, 3.9 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively. Mass to flow rates used in the adiabatic oven reaction vessel have been selected to be indicative of a sluggish, natural air leakage and medium ventilation environment. Under a sluggish ventilation flow rate all three coals incubate to thermal runaway in minimum time frames of 2.8–3.1 years, 34–42 days and 79–95 days, respectively. When the ventilation flow rate is increased to natural air leakage, coal A with the highest R70 value and highest moisture content selfheats to 28°C above mine ambient temperature before heat loss takes over due to moisture evaporation. However, both Coals B and C at this flow rate incubate to thermal runaway in a shorter time frame than under sluggish flow. At the medium ventilation flow rate, only Coal B incubates to thermal runaway, albeit after a significant extended period of time. These results show how important it is to determine the heat balance between the coal intrinsic reactivity (as indicated by the R70 value) and moisture content. The results also have implications for the possible location of the ‘critical velocity zone’ and subsequent hotspot development and migration.

The Bureau of Mines has developed rock noise source location techniques that may be used to obtain precise and practical source locations from micro-seismic field data. These techniques enable one to monitor all or any part of a rock structure and map progressive stress buildup or rock movement. Thus, the microseismic method of determining instability in rock structures is becoming an invaluable engineering tool for the mining or civil engineer engaged in rock excavation and construction.

"The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. This process also reduces the level of residual uncertainty in the valuation outcome.This paper presents a valuation methodology to pragmatically incorporate this level of valuation sophistication and statistically quantify the associated increase in the level of confidence of the valuation outcomes reported.CITATION:Holloway, E C, 2016. This report summarizes the results from the first year of an anticipated multiphase program to develop improved coal mining equipment which utilize the CAVIJET? cavitating water jet method. This laboratory parametric study demonstrated the advantages of cavitating jets over non­cavitating jets in cutting coal, by producing comparable slot depths at one-fifth of the operating pressure, at better than one-half of the spe­cific energy. These results suggest that CAVIJET-augmented mining devices can be developed with compact, low-pressure pumps. Thus, CAVIJET should be capable of operating with safer, lighter support equipment, while providing all of the advantages (reduction of dust and sparks, reduced damage to cutters) of conventional hydraulic mining methods.

Dynatec was the contract operator of the Ken Snyder Mine in Midas, Nevada from start of production in January 1999 to September 2001. This paper summarizes Dynatec?s experience and approach to the use of longhole stoping methods for mining to widths of 1.3 to 2 metres in a steeply dipping narrow vein orebody.

The paper outlines the need for high-volume ventilation in a uranium mining operation based on the design to meet environmental requirements for dust, radiation and diesel equipment. Mining methods in a highly mechanized operation, a key factor in design, are discussed. The construction and installation of major intake and exhaust fans are described briefly, together with the development of the mine airways and distribution system. Controls in the form of doors and bulkheads are important considerations in planning. Finally, the need to lower ventilation requirements in response to increasing power costs will result in future improvements.

"The study undertaken aims to investigate an ice stope heating and cooling system for its potential to be implemented in sub-arctic mines, as a low carbon alternative to conventional natural gas and refrigeration chiller systems. Its performance was simulated for a years’ worth of data, taking into consideration hourly temperature data. Results showed that to supply the required heating and cooling loads, the ice stope system had to supplement its heating with natural heating. The techno-economic performance of this system was compared to that of a conventional heating and cooling system in a mine, with the ice stope thermal storage system hawing the lowest annuitized cost and significantly lower carbon emissions.INTRODUCTIONConventional heating and cooling, in a mine is implemented using natural gas heaters and chiller refrigeration systems respectively. This results in a significant portion of energy consumption in underground mines attributable to ventilation (De Souza, 2015), including the conditioning of the air to ensure that temperatures do not exceed work comfort standards (ACGIH, 2011). Especially at depth where heat could become a significant issue. An ice stope thermal storage, using ice as the storage medium is being proposed as an alternative to provide the heating and cooling—with the ice creation resulting in heating and the ice melting providing the cooling required. A techno-economic investigation of the two systems is undertaken to identify the capital and operating costs for the two systems, and to assess the ice stope’s potential to be considered a low cost and carbon solution for heating and cooling of mines in sub-arctic climates.NATURAL STORAGE SYSTEM – CONCEPT DEVELOPMENTThe concept for the natural storage system is developed from the ice stope at Frood-Stobie Mine, ON, Canada (Stachulak, 1991). The ice stope was developed for mine air heating, with the heating occurring by spraying warm return service water onto the cold intake air—resulting in the air temperature increasing and ice being created in the stope. In summer this ice was melted by passing warm air on top of it, resulting in slight cooling of the air but no significant temperature difference which could allow effective cooling. A schematic of the Frood-Stobie Mine ice stope is provided in Figure 1."

No minerals have been produced from the McGraw Creek RARE II area. During the 1982 U.S. Bureau of Mines study, there were no active mines in the area. Limestone occurrences (fig. 1, no. 2), four copper prospects (fig. 1, no. 1, 4, 5, 6), and a prospect with no significant mineral values (fig. 1, no. 3) were examined. A moderate potential for high-calcium limestone resources was estimated between ocurrences within the study area near McGraw and Spring Creeks (fig. 1, no. 2). There is low potential for copper resources at the Argenta Prospect (fig. 1., no. 1) in the study area, and the McDougall Prospect adjacent to the area.

An extensive program of laboratory model tests was undertaken to study the effect of slope on p-y curves under passive loading in dry sand. The paper concerns the method developed in a series of laboratory model tests to experimentally determine p-y curves. Bending moment curves are differentiated by using curve fitting method of cubic polynomial function. The study includes effect of slope angle and relative density on bending moment and non-dimensional p-y curves. The non-dimensional p-y curves for piles on sloping ground under passive load are developed modifying API method by including a Reduction Factor (R) using the experimental results.
