The U.S. cement industry, including Puerto Rico, again set a record in terms of production and shipments. The increase in shipments came primarily from imports of portland cement as domestic production from produced and imported clinker gained only 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Clinker production as reported to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) was 88.6 Mt (97.6 million st), an increase of 1 percent. Gray and white portland cement production from domestic and imported clinker, estimated at 93.5 Mt (103 million st), was up 1.9 Mt (2.1 million st). Masonry cement shipments of 5.5 Mt (6 million st), which equates closely to production, was up 6.3 percent. Blended ce-ment shipments were up 35.9 percent from 2004 at 2.35 Mt (2.6 million st).

INTRODUCTION The Sacramento Regional County Sanitation District (SRCSD) serves unincorporated areas of Sacramento County, parts of the cities of Sacramento and Folsom, and the cities of Citrus Heights, West Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, and Elk Grove. SRCSD maintains 145 kilometers (km) (90 miles) of interceptors that convey a combined total of 0.6 million meters3 per day (160 million gallons per day) or more of waste-water, with additional miles of sewer interceptors that are scheduled to be built by 2020. Wastewater is conveyed to the Sacramento Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant in the southwestern portion of the County, also managed and operated by SRCSD, in interceptors with diameters as large as 3.0 m (120 inches.) As part of its overall expansion program, SRCSD has constructed a number of major interceptors over the last few years with tunneling methods due to concerns associated with either the impacts of open cut construction in an urban environment (traffic, safety, noise, environmental concerns) or the need to achieve a crossing of a stream, river, or transportation corridor. This paper focuses on a specific issue that affected construction of the Upper Northwest Interceptor (UNWI) Sections 3&4 project, located at the northern limit of the SRCSD service boundary and within the limits of the City of Sacramento. This project involved the construction of 3.2 km (2 miles) of 2.1-meter (84-inch) and 2.4 km (1.5 miles) of 1.7-meter (66-inch) diameter reinforced concrete pipe (RCP) using MTBM, EPBM, and 3.3-meter (130-inch) two-pass TBM methods. The owner elected to install the RCP using tunneling for a number of reasons including a desire to avoid traffic impacts in a dense urban corridor, to minimize disturbance to the neighborhood, and to avoid potential dewatering-induced settlement issues along the western one-third of the project. For the western portion of the alignment the 2.1-meter (84-inch) reinforced concrete interceptor pipe was to be installed using a 2.7-meter (105-inch) earth pressure balance machine (EPBM). No external dewatering of shafts or tunnels was permitted for reasons of concern about settlement, discussed previously. At the intersection of Elkhorn Boulevard and Natomas Boulevard (at the extreme northwest corner of the project) the 2.7-meter (105-inch) EPBM tunneled past a recently constructed 11-million liter (3-million gallon) water storage reservoir, passing within 3 meters (10 feet) of the tank?s shallow foundation while tunneling through clean sands with a shallow groundwater table. The paper will discuss the implemented solution to mitigate additional settlement risk that was developed as a joint collaboration between the owner, CM, designer, and contractor.

This is the second of a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made pursuant to a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data oil motor gasolines sold during the minter of 1935-36.3/ These gasoline surveys report results of inspections, in oil-company laboratories, of samples of gasoline obtained by representatives of oil companies from service-station pumps in marketing areas throughout the country. In the present survey are presented inspection data on 239 samples of regular- price gasoline, 166 samples of premium-price gasoline, and 157 samples of third-grade gasoline, a total of 562 samples collected during the summer of 1936.

Ultramafic soils display high concentrations of nickel (Ni) and a number of nutrient deficiencies (e.g. N, K, P). Ni-hyperaccumulator plants have evolved on such environments, developed specific metal homeostasis showing concentrations of Ni sometimes above 1% in their aerial biomass (Baker & Brooks 1989). Alyssum murale, a Ni-hyperaccumulator, is commonly found around the Mediterranean but can grow on non-ultramafic soils as well, with an altitudinal extension ranging from sea level to 2000 m.a.s.l. Rhizosphere bacterial communities associated with Ni-hyperaccumulator plants can differ from those of non-accumulating plants growing at the same site. Among edaphic factors that could influence the phylogenetic structure of the bacterial communities, altitude and metal-bioavailability and in particular nickel could be significant. However, most studies have focused on analyzing soils with techniques that provide little detail about the phylogenetic structure of these bacterial communities present in ultramafic soils. The objectives of this study were to understand the specific changes in the structure of A. murale rhizosphere bacterial community that occur across two gradients: 1°) elevation and 2°) Ni geochemistry, using pyrosequencing technique (454-pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene). It was found that the higher the soil chemically-available Ni contents, the higher the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria. On the contrary, the abundance of TM7 decreased with increasing levels of available Ni. Moreover, Chloroflexi was present with 53 to 77% of relative abundance. These results demonstrate that soil chemically-available Ni drives the bacterial community diversity in the rhizosphere of Alyssum murale regardless the elevation gradient and other different soil physicochemical parameters. These results should now be confirmed in different ultramafic edaphic environments worldwide (e.g. ultramafic lateritic covers) and in the rhizosphere of different hyperaccumulator taxa.

The production of coal from underground mines in Washington declined during the recent war owing to shortage of manpower, and coal was shipped to the Pacific Northwest from mines in the Rocky Mountain region. The movement of this coal into Washington required the use of railroad equipment that otherwise could have been used for transporting war materiel and personnel. Strip mining uses a minimum of manpower, and the development of coal areas in the Pacific Northwest that can be mined by the strip method should increase production in the area, thus releasing railroad equipment from the necessity of transporting coal long distances and also providing consumers with a lower-cost product. The development of a strip mine to supply the demand at low cost requires a large investment in heavy equipment. In order that the fixed charges due to large investment in plant and equipment may be kept at a minimum, large reserves of coal must be proved. A reconnaissance of an area near Toledo, Lewis County, Wash., indicated a large bed of lignite that could be mined by strip methods. The area is approximately midway between Portland, Oreg., and Tacoma, Wash. (refer to fig. 1), and the opening of a large mine in the area would supply fuel to these and other nearby centers.

"This paper presents a case history of a successful construction-phase pile load test program that optimized the pile design in challenging ground conditions at the Great Neck Wastewater Treatment Plant in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau County, New York. The improvements and expansion of the wastewater treatment plant included the construction of several new structures to comply with new stringent nitrogen discharge requirements and new design flow. The challenging ground conditions included up to 20-ft thick organic deposits with weight of hammer blow counts and up to 14 percent organic content and tidal ground water that was near the ground surface. The foundation design evaluated various deep foundation alternatives and selected driven closed-ended pipe piles then filled with concrete as the most suitable foundation. The selection process included considerations of cost, risk, vibrations, noise, and schedule. The contract documents utilized an innovative approach of performing an optimization load test program that was implemented during construction to optimize pile lengths and reduce potential vibration and construction schedule.This paper discusses the details of the successful load test program including static testing, dynamic testing, and the innovative contracting approach utilized to implement the construction phase load test program. It also discusses the successful development and implementation of driving criteria for production piles and construction challenges. The successful load test program resulted in savings of several hundred thousand dollars, optimized schedule, and lower environmental impacts.SITE AND PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThe Great Neck Water Pollution Control District (GNWPCD), located in the Town of North Hempstead in Nassau, New York, owns and operates a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) that discharges treated effluent through an outfall to Manhasset Bay, which is a tributary of the Long Island Sound. The site is located west of Manhasset Bay and is surrounded on three sides by local roads, and commercial, industrial, and recreational properties. The site has a gentle slope ranging from elevation +20 to +7 from west to east, respectively, based on the Nassau County Datum.To comply with new nitrogen discharge requirements and new design flows, the GNWPCD contracted CH2M HILL, Inc. and William F. Cosulich Associates as a Joint- Venture (JV) to design and provide services during construction of eight new advanced nitrogen removal facilities."

Middelburg mine is an opencast export mine operating in the Eastern Transvaal Coalfields of the Republic of South Africa (Figure 1). The mine was commissioned in 1983, to its original design capacity of 4.25 million sales tonnes which was subsequently raised to 5.5 million sales tonnes in 1989. This increase in export tonnage was brought about through an increase in the mines export allocation and the revision of management strategies. The maintenance of this increased tonnage with minimal additional capital has been achieved through improved operational efficiencies and the upgrading of planning operations through the purchase of an Enhanced Mine Scheduling Software Package (EMSSP/MINESTAR). Simultaneously with this requirement were additional factors that contributed to the implementation of the EMSSP. The mine was owned by a joint venture of two partners and is operated by Middelburg Mine services (Rand Mines Pty. Ltd) (Figure 2). This structure of ownership required the evaluation of numerous planning options to be under-taken concurrently and hence the need for an efficient streamlined scheduling pack-age that could fulfill this requirement. Compounding the EMSSP needs further, were the problems experienced in the export market, these being the external pressure from current and new suppliers in the market place which obliged management to provide solutions to rapidly changing market conditions. These fluctuating market conditions have had a direct effect upon the mine's planning strategies because of the large percentage of the mine?s sales sold on the international spot market. The sanction factor for all South African exporters has had a negative effect upon price and this was compounded further through internal competition in 1987 via suppliers attempting to maintain the market position.

"This paper describes the recent pilot-plant work carried out on two alternative processes capable of producing an effluent containing less than 10 pCi/L total radium-226 activity and very close to 3 pCi/L dissolved radium-226. The processes incorporate coprecipitation of radium with barium sulphate by the addition of barium chloride in continuously stirred tank reactors followed by either chemical coagulation with ferric chloride, flocculation and clarification, or polymer-aided dual-media filtration. IntroductionUranium mines in Canada have practiced radium removal from tailings basin effluents since 1965. Treatment consists of addition of barium chloride to precipitate radium as barium- radium sulphate and provision of natural or constructed settling ponds for sedimentation. This process, however, has been identified as being deficient in that it allows particulate or suspended radium-226 releases which are higher than the regulated dissolved values». Also, the large size of some of the settling ponds is believed to represent a real limitation of the present technology because of inferred difficulty in recovery of barium-radium sulphate precipitates.The Federal Government Mining Task Force established a Radioactivity Sub-Group in 1974 to assist in the development of effluent regulations and guidelines for the uranium mining industry. Among the recommendations of the Sub-Group was the need to seek more effective methods of radium removal, including development of physical/chemical treatment systems as an alternative to settling ponds. In response to the SubGroup recommendations, a bench-scale study began in March 1976at the Wastewater Technology Centre (WTC) of Environment Canada . The results of this study indicated that coagulation and flocculation of the precipitate from barium chloride addition is a viable alternative to sedimentation in settling ponds(3). The bench work was expanded and accelerated in 1977, with financial assistance provided by the Atomic Energy Control Board. Subsequently, a research program with a larger scope was developed; this program is jointly managed and funded by government and industry, as shown in Table I.One of the goals of the joint program is to develop, at pilot scale, a physicalI chemical process to reduce the radium-226 content of uranium mining and milling effluents. Target radium-226 activities for treated tailings basin effluents were set: namely, 10 pCil L total and 3 pCil L dissolved radium 226. Extensive bench-scale and pilot-scale work was conducted through 1978 and 1979 and has culminated in the development of two physical/chemical processes. This paper describes work carried out at a pilot plant which led to the selection of the two physical I chemical processes for demonstration. In short-term tests, the processes produced effluents meeting the radium-226 target activities."

"Under the auspices of the Commission of the European Union, a consortium composed of six European organi~ations has conducted a project to scale up the PLACID electrowinning cell to industrial size within the Placid process development. This paper is concerning the results and achievement of the industrial cell prototype after more than 1,000 hours operating time and about 10,000 Kg electrolytic lead production. In general, results have been very satisfactory, demonstrating the ability ofthe PLACID electrowinning cell to produce top quality electrolytic lead (> 99.99 %) with high current efficiency and low energy consumption.IntroductionThis paper is concerning the development of an industrial size PLACID electrowinning cell within the PLACID process development. This project began on January 1993 and was finished on April 1996.Lead metal production and manufacturing industries produce large amounts of dusts and also lead bearing slags. Spent lead-acid battery recycling also produces lead oxides from the battery pastes rather similar to those mentioned above. Those lead secondary materials are hazardous and difficult to handle by usual procedures.Existing processes to treat-lead oxides may inflict considerable damage on the environment, incur high operating costs and have limitations to produce top quality lead.The main aim of this project has been to develop a novel hydrometallurgical process able to deal with different lead bearing materials, mainly lead oxide secondaries: lead-acid battery pastes, lead fumes, furnace slags, oxide residues, etc., producing ""four nines"" pure lead in an efficient manner with a benign influence on the environment; it is called the PLACID process."

"The Bureau of Mines for some time advocated the firing of all blasts in coal mines as single shots, and this method of firing is the general practice in American bituminous-coal mines. All single shots can be fired with permissible single-shot units so designed that they will not ignite mixtures of methane and air.If several shots in a face are fired singly it is necessary to return the face after each shot. In some mines having steeply pitching coal seams, this may be dangerous or even impossible, under these conditions shots are usually fired simultaneously.Several shots cannot be fixed simultaneously with permissible single-shot blasting units, and safe types of multiple shots blasters are not readily available. This means that the firing of multiple shots in gassy mines is usually accompanied by the possibility of gas ignition as the blast occurs.Tests have been made at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station to determine the possibility of developing safe types of multiple-shot units suitable for such use, or of applying other type safely in gassy sections of mines where firing shots singly is impracticable.The tests may be divided into the following four groups:1. Tests to demonstrate hazard in the use of existing types of multiple-shot units of the portable generator type.2. Tests to show the electrical characteristics of multiple-shot generator units relative to the possibility of preventing igniting sparks and of modifying the design and application of such units in furthering safety."

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. To study the preparation process of an earthquake, we should get closer to the hypocentre. In co-operation with ISS International, we had an experimental field (~200 m x~200 m) without dykes and faults in a South African deep gold mine. We have monitored more than 20,000 seismic events (M<2) with borehole tri-axial accelerometers. We used a data acquisition system with 15 kHz sampling and 120-dB dynamic range. In a remnant area at a distance of 100?200 m, an earthquake sequence associated with an M~2 event occurred. Significant changes in seismic parameters such as stress drop, b-value, energy index were observed associated with the sequence. We installed Ishii?s borehole strain meters and could monitor as large a strain change as 10-4associated with mining. However, sampling was only 4 times per hour and 12 bit A/D. A distance from the M2 sequence was ~100 m, being not close enough. Therefore, we found another field with several crosscut tunnels excavated across a fault where an M=2-3 event is expected. We installed the strain meter within several metres of the fault to monitor both shear and normal strains on the fault. The strains are continuously digitized with a 24-bit 25-Hz A/D conversion. The Earth Tide (10-8)is clearly detected. Seismicity induced by longwall mining can be compared to earthquake swarm induced by fluid intrusion to vertical dykes. We also found a decrease in energy index in the source area of M>5events a few days before the major events. This paper describes the location and general features of the ?Red Bed? or sandstone copper deposits in southeastern Colorado and New Mexico. Most of the areas containing this type of deposit were visited, and many deposits were examined. Some deposits were not visited because of lack of information as to their location. In the large area covered a great variety of climatic, geographic, and topographic conditions exists. Some of the deposits are in arid areas, whereas others are in heavily forested regions. Altitudes range from 3,400 to 9,200 feet, and the terrain varies from flat plains to rugged mountains. Transportation is a difficult problem in most of the districts, involving long truck hauls to a railroad and long rail hauls to a smelter.

AT Josephtown, Pa., on the south hank of the Ohio River about thirty miles northwest of Pittsburgh, is the Josephtown electrothermic zinc smelter, which operates as a custom smelter receiving both domestic and foreign concentrates. Constructed in 1930, the plant was designed to produce zinc oxide and to process 124 tons per day of zinc concentrate obtained mainly from the Company&apos;s New York State mines. Zinc condensing equipment was developed in conjunction with the St. Joe electrothermic. furnace and commercial production of zinc metal started in 1936. Expansion of the plant and equipment during 1939 and 1940 brought the processing. capacity to upwards of 300 tons of concentrate per day; and the plant operated at peak capacity during the war years, earning the Army-Navy "E" award and three subsequent stars. A postwar plant expansion is now under way, designed to increase the capacity to 500 tons per day of concentrate, with an estimated daily production of 160 tons of zinc metal of various grades, about 100 tons of zinc oxide, and 425 tons of sulphuric acid as major products.

MORE ORE is mined in the Bingham District than in any other mining district in Utah. In addition to the open-pit operations of the Utah Copper Co., there have been, many large underground mines. Until recent years the principal production was from the Jordan and Commercial limestones, but in the last eight years valuable ore deposits have been developed in the so-called alphabetical or "A," "B," "C," and "D" limestones, mainly by the U. S. Smelting, Refining & Mining Co. The value of these developments has led the company just mentioned to acquire large holdings in the district and within the last year to install at the Niagara shaft a hoist capable of going to a vertical depth of 4000 ft., or 1800 ft. deeper than the present lowest level. O objetivo principal deste trabalho foi incorporar o resíduo de mármore no desenvolvimento de formulações de massas cerâmicas para obtenção de grês porcelanato. Foram preparadas quatro formulações da massa cerâmica variando-se as proporções de caulim, talco, feldspato, argila de queima clara e do resíduo de mármore nas misturas. Essas matérias-primas foram peneiradas na malha 200 mesh e as porcentagens para cada formulação foi misturada em moinho de bolas por 30 min. Os corpos de prova foram preparados em uma prensa uniaxial com pressão de 25 MPa e sinterizados em forno convencional nas temperaturas de 800°C, 900°C e 1.000°C, com patamar de 60 minutos e taxa de aquecimento de 10°C por minuto, verificando as propriedades das peças. Para obtenção de resultados foram realizados ensaios de absorção de água, retração linear nas peças sinterizadas, massa específica aparente e porosidade aparente, com o propósito de avaliar a variação de retração linear em determinada temperatura de acordo com a porcentagem de absorção de água. Foram realizados também os ensaios de flexão e microscopia eletrônica de varredura - (MEV). As composições estudadas apresentaram resultados satisfatórios dentro dos valores aceitáveis para o devido uso na indústria cerâmica.

An important consideration in any mining operation is waste disposal management. Tailings management at Macraes gold mine allows for the disposal of tailings into fully engineered embankment dams and overburden material to be incorporated as construction material into those embankment dams. This paper outlines the current tailings management practices.
