In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

The mining industry is constantly taking greater cognisance of their operating costs as a strategy to counter the effects of falling commodity prices. As a result, optimal operating efficiency is more important than ever. One such operation is that of blasting. Considering the relative increasing costs of explosives and accessories it is desirable to optimise the number of blast-holes fired by maximising their individual output. This achievement may now only be possible following the advent of higher technologies in the form of modified explosives and electronic detonators. This paper reviews and introduces some techniques of blast monitoring, types of operations where each is most suited, resulting modifications to blast designs, and identifies some pitfalls to watch out for when analysing the results.

Productivity and efficiency of diesel-powered underground trucks and LHDs can be enhanced through the application of a range of advanced technologies. In addition, these machines are subject to ever more stringent emissions control requirements. This paper will review how various technologies can improve usability, maintainability, and performance of LHDs, through a number of examples. The use of instrumentation and monitoring to understand the role of operator practice on mucking efficiency, as well as the use of finite-element analysis to evaluate structural design, and the use of control techniques to modify operator inputs and hence decrease power consumption, will be presented.

CHEAP power is essential to large-scale mining and metallurgical operations, particularly where fine grinding of large tonnages has to be resorted to, as is the case with an increasing number of. mines treating disseminated copper ores, or low-grade gold ores, in the grinding of which considerable power is consumed. A comparison of the cost of generating power with Diesel engines and steam turbines and a brief discussion of the different factors governing the profitable use of either type of prime mover may be timely in view of the importance of. a cheap supply of power to the mining industry, and the prominence that has lately been given to Diesel engines in America. As many of our most important mines and largest producers of metals are located in sections where neither cheap coal nor water power is available, and the price of oil fuel is increased by long hauls, the Diesel. engine will. become a prime mover of increasing importance. This applies particularly to the Southwestern States, where an ample supply of cold water for condensing purposes is unusual and local climatological conditions interfere in securing the high vacua essential to high turbine efficiency. About 12 times as much water will be required for condensing purposes with steam turbines under general conditions as is needed for jacket-cooling of two-stroke, cycle Diesel engine; four-stroke cycle Diesel engines require only one-twentieth of the cooling water. Another condition favoring the use of Diesel engines is the high load factor at which most mine power plants operate. The influence of load factor on the cost of generating power is shown in Tables 1 and 2 and in Fig. 1.

Smelting or converting of sulphide concentrates and mattes in a batch operation presents a challenge when directing the off- gas to a conventional acid plant. The Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (a division of the Vedanta Group of companies) Chanderia Lead Zinc smelter was presented with such a challenge that was met with the adoption of the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System. The Ausmelt top submerged lance technology used at Hindustan Zinc generates a furnace gas stream that containsbetween 0.1 vol% and 12 vol% SO2 during the three stages of batch smelting. Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing Technology captures the SO2 to ensure that treated flue gas exits the facility at a concentration below 100 ppmv SO2 and it releases SO2 in a controlled fashion, to more closely match the needs of the existing acid plant. The application of a regenerable scrubbing system to capture SO2 from a batch-operated furnace and convert it to acid in a conventional acid plant was a first of its kind in the world. This paper provides an update on the design and operation of the Hindustan Zinc SO2 recovery system and suggests two improvements to the basic flow sheet that optimize the cost of SO2 scrubbing further.

The Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA) specifies that the upper 1.22 m of material on the reclaimed surface should be left as uncompacted as possible to facilitate tree root growth. One of the main concerns about applying the FRA to steep slopes is that the upper 1.22 m of material could cause the reclaimed slopes to be unstable. Successful application of FRA on flat and rolling surfaces precipitated this investigation. Details of a field investigation conducted at a steep-slope mine are available in an earlier publication (Kumar and Sweigard, 2011). A total of 70 survey monuments were driven into the slope in a regular pattern to monitor slope movement. Quarterly surveys of the monuments were done to quantify any type of mass movement either horizontally or vertically. The methodology proposed for slope movement was verified using numerical models. Analytical models based on limit equilibrium technique and numerical models based on the finite element method were developed for slope stability analysis. The limit equilibrium analysis was done using Geo-Slope software following the Simplified Bishop Method. The finite element (FEM) numerical model was developed using the Plaxis computer program following the strength reduction technique. Two kinds of slope stability analysis were performed: first with the top 1.22 m of loose material and second without top loose material. Finally, the field investigation results were compared with stability analysis results. Both of these approaches showed that application of the FRA on steep slopes is not causing any significant instability problems that would not exist otherwise for overly steepened slopes. The purpose of the work covered by this contract is to develop a ground and pilot conductor connector which will significantly improve mine trailing cable splice performance. This work compliments the work completed under Contract 00357100 on the development of crimp connectors for the phase conductors of trailing cables. A brief discussion on splice problems is presented as an introductory means and substantiates the need for the development and test programs outlined in this report. As with the phase development work, the ground and pilot connector work is essentially of an empirical nature. As a result time is devoted to explaining the derivations of the test procedures used. In order to familiarize the reader with connector terminology a section is devoted to a glossary of pertinent terms. The connector design effort includes connectors for splicing ground and pilot conductors. A distinction is made between connectors suitable for splicing round and flat ground configurations. The same also applies to the pilot conductors. During the course of this work, much time has been devoted to the question of suitability of round cable configurations for trailing cable applications. This is discussed in detail along with resulting conclusions and recommendations. A field test program was conducted in order to confirm ground and pilot connector laboratory data. This testing also determined the viability of the connector designs and recommended installation techniques in a mine environment.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Charles IV. Benton was born at Kezar Falls, Maine, Nov. 12, 1843. We have no accurate knowledge concerning the early part of his career. In 1871 he engaged with the N. Y. Honduras Rosario Mining Co., at San Juancinto, Honduras, C. A., and later was employed at the Monserrat mine at Yuscaran, and at Santa Lucia, Honduras, with the Tenero Mining Milling Co. of Pennsylvania. In 1897 he became a member of the Institute. At the time he was stricken with his last sickness he was employed at the Paymaster mine at Tucson, Ariz. He died at Fairmount, Denver, Colo., Sept. 9, 1907. William R. Boggs, Jr.-The notice in the Bulletin for January was incorrect in saying that the murder of Mr. Boggs occurred while he was employed as metallurgical. manager by Mr. W. B. A. Dingwall, at La Maroma, San Luis Potosi, Mex. Mr. Dingwall writes that in March, 1907, Mr. Boggs left him, to return to his home at Winston, N. C., whence he. subsequently went to Durango, Mex., to take, with the Topia Mining Co., a position which he occupied at the tine of his death, Nov. 17, 1907. Mr. Dingwall says that, while in his service, Mr. Boggs never had any trouble with the workmen, but was esteemed and liked by them, as by all who knew him ; and adds, injustice to the State of San Luis Potosi, that the population, even in the mining-camps of that State, is orderly and law-abiding, and that the authorities are vigilant and just. In a review of so 40 papers on damage to residential structures resulting from blasting, only 3 were found that present data on the observed amplitude and frequency of the vibration levels produced by blasting together with an observed degree of damage to a residential structure. The data from these three reports have been analyzed statistically to determine if one of the quantities, displacement, velocity, or acceleration, is more reliable than the others for estimating the degree of damage to a residential structure. From this analysis the conclusion is drawn that a given degree of damage to a structure is most closely related to the magnitude of the particle velocity of the wave motion passing thru the earth at the structure location. On the average, only minor damage it observed for peak particle velocities of 5.4 inches per second, and major damage is observed for peak particle velocities of 7.6 inches per second. When the spread of the data is taken into consideration, the following statement can be made: Wave motions that have a peak particle velocity in excess of 2 inches per second have a fair probability of producing some damage to structures, whereas wave motions that have a peak velocity less than 2 inches per second have a very low probability of causing any damage. Therefore, the recommendation is made that vibration levels in the vicinity of residential structures should be maintained below a peat particle velocity of 2 inches per second. The above criterion for safe blasting is considered to hold over a wide variety of soil and rock conditions because the original data were obtained for a wide range of soil and rock conditions and on various types of residential structures. In this study, the leaching rate of molybdenite concentrate was evaluated in sulfuric medium, and the influence of the diverse oxidants including hydrogen peroxide, manganese oxide, copper sulfate on the leaching rate was studied. Also, the effect of the addition of the ethylene glycol to the hydrogen peroxide was studied and results showed that with the addition of ethylene glycol, the leaching rate is increased 55% from 41% up to 80.3%. The optimum condition is achieved as 0.7 M of H2SO4, 4.4 M of H2O2, and 3.5 M of EG at 30 °C within 4 h of leaching time and 500 rpm. Also, inserting the oxygen with the pressure of 6 bar to the leaching autoclave, the leaching rate is increased more up to 86.4%. Finally, the leaching process was studied kinetically and the determined mode of controlling factor was specified based on the activation energy which equals 46.252 kJ/mole indicating the chemical reaction mode.

Previous studies on blast fumes (carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide) clearance and workplace reentry time have overlooked the effects of toxic gases trapped in the muck pile. The currently available models for calculating the mine reentry times assume that all post-blast fumes are emitted upon detonation. However, recent studies reported that as much as 60 to 70% [1–5] of the fumes or gases produced during an underground development blasting could remain trapped in the adjacent rock mass or in the muck pile. Trapped fumes are slowly released [1–5], and when disturbed, high concentrations are released, representing a possible risk during the loading and transportation of the muck pile. In this study, mathematical models were developed using computational fluid dynamics to understand the behavior of the trapped fumes and their effect on mine reentry time. The three scenarios considered for this study include (i) gas emission source with no muck pile volume, (ii) gas emission source with non-porous muck pile volume, and (iii) gas emission source with porous muck pile volume. The estimated reentry times in all three scenarios were compared to see how porous media affects dilution time. It was observed that scenario 3, with fumes trapped in the muck pile, took a significantly longer clearance time (more than double) as compared to scenarios 1 and 2.

The mining law of British North Borneo is entitled " The Mining Ordinance , 1927. 113 The only mining regulation or rule available is " Rules 313 , 114 passed in accordance with article 26 of the ordinance of 1927. Before the passage of this legislation , the country had no specific law governing the granting of mineral rights , although the land law contained provisions relating to mining lands . The land ordinance of 19135 still controls in a few details . All references in this paper , unless otherwise specifically designated , are to the mining ordinance .

The White Pine Copper Division of Copper Range Company is a large copper producer operating an underground mine, mill, and smelter on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Principal water discharges are from the tailings basin where these discharges are high in dissolved solids because of mine water pumped into the basin. Principal air emissions are from the smelter where SO2 emissions are uncontrolled. Although water discharges and air emissions have not had significant environmental impacts, environmental regulations could require additional control procedures. Because of low copper prices and poor profitability, cost of compliance with possible new environmental regulations could have serious impact on White Pine with no apparent significant beneficial environmental impacts.

"The mineral raw materials industry is a key-component of the Gross Domestic Product of industrialised economies, closely related to both the building and the industrial sectors. Despite this, at local level mining and quarrying are associated with both irreversible environmental damage and several visual alterations affecting the natural landscape. In this sense, SIA (Social Impact Assessment) has become a strategic tool that can not only improve the prediction but also the assessment of the social impact by involving the local communities in a participatory process. Taking into account the SIA experience, together with the examination of some relevant international case studies, it is possible to draw up a list of good practices for mining project management, from exploration through to closure and beyond, with quarry restoration. Such good practices will complement the existing studies, focusing on environmental issues, with the social issues arisen considered in SIA application."

Sustainable Development is a very broad initiative in the mining industry, with major components running over the entire life of the mine. It likely commences with pre-exploration permitting and continues to post-mining final closure and possible land reuse. Most major mining corporations embrace the sustainability initiative, either out of a sense of social responsibility or out of necessity in order to continue doing business. But many may view the overall initiative as an added ?cost of doing business.? In many elements of sustainability, there clearly can be added cost ? some as simple as complying with self-imposed sustainability reporting. Fortunately, one major element of sustainable development can clearly be shown to reduce costs ? energy resource management. This paper will describe how the mining industry sustainable development effort differs from other industries, but can benefit from their experience in energy resource management. The mining industry can utilize proven methods from other industries to further their energy management efforts. In addition, many of the resources developed and employed to promote better energy resource management in non-mining industrial settings will be listed.

Based on the results of this study, the underhand cut and fill stoping method, with mass destressing, is an effective method for controlling rock bursts and falls of ground for deep mining in the Coeur d'Alene Mining District. The procedure can be utilized to pull highly stressed pillars by converting from conventional overhand stoping methods or used as a primary recovery system. During the demonstration, only one minor rock burst occurred, with no injuries. The system facilitates accurate placement of vertical boreholes for effective mass destressing. Each mining cut is filled with cemented sandfill overlying a timbered mat that forms the back for the succeeding cut. For this demonstration, a cemented fill was mixed on the surface and piped to the stone. Costs for pillar recovery by this method are comparable and are considered cost effective over conventionally timbered overhand mining as a pillar recovery method.

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. Burning coal-mine refuse banks were surveyed in 15 States. The following characteristics were tabulated for 495 hanks: County; name, population, and distance of nearest town; size and status of bank; status and stage of fire; and topography. Ways of controlling fires were reviewed, the compacting and sealing method proving most satisfactory. Means for preventing refuse-bank fires by proper construction of banks are described.

"Gold cyanidation kinetics which are often limited in commercial operations by the rate of oxygen dissolution from gas bubbles into the slurry, are discussed. Emerging technologies for improving the rate of oxygen dissolution are compared and the gas efficiency, energy use and operating performance of inverted cones and a device based on a jet diffuser are examined. The effect of solids loading is also reviewed and a relationship between operating parameters and the kilograms oxygen dissolved per kilowatt-hour is presented.Inverted cones are shown to create slurry settling problems at high gas flow rates and surface tension lowering agents are shown not to greatly improve the overall rates of oxygen dissolution.The novel jet diffuser technology operates at a range of gas to liquid ratios that improves its energy use over conventional technology and the performance of a number of designs are discussed.Gas efficiencies as high as 35% were observed with the novel diffusers at 40 cm diffuser immersion and are expected to increase at greater immersions. Energy use of 1.8 kg 02 I kWh were estimated for prototype full size diffusers operating at 100 cm immersion.
