"Simulation is the process of designing a computerized model, of a system or procedure, for the purpose of understanding its behaviour and developing strategies to control its operation. Simulation models are rapidly becoming an effective tool for mineral processing plants. Powerful software and fast hardware are more readily available than a basic understanding of the theory of mathematical probability and applied statistics that process simulation models demand.Simple spreadsheet software can be used to develop simulation models that take into account any set of conditions at a mineral processing plant. In addition to an unbiased estimate for each variable in the set on which two-and three-product formulas are based, reliable variance estimates for all variables are required. How to estimate variances, effectively and at the lowest possible cost, and how to compute variances for simple functions such as the metal content of a quantity of ore or concentrate, or more complex functions such as the percentage recovery at a mineral processing plant, are the key to useful simulation models.IntroductionSimulation models for systems and procedures have become one of the most powerful and effective applications for computers( 2.6). Simulations are applied to a wide range of scientific and engineering disciplines. Generally, a model is designed to investigate the effects of changes in and interactions between a set of variables before a system is in operation or a procedure is implemented, by simulating weeks, months, and even years of operation, in a few minutes of computer time. Along with practical and useful applications always comeabuse and misuse. For a simulation process cannot be more reliable than the methodology that was applied to design the model, to estimate variables and variances, to check performance, and to verify validity. A mineral processing plant is a dynamic system that changes continuously as a function of time but within probabilistic constraints that can be estimated by applying statistical tools and techniques to the variables and variances that interact in the system.A model should be designed to simulate not only the set of variables but also the variance for each variable. Models in which constant variances are used to generate normally distributed random numbers, are less realistic than models in which the variances are simulated first, and then used to simulate the variables."

Protect mine rescuers from heat-induced stress that drastically cuts their endurance and saps their strength. Approach To prevent exhaustion caused by thermal stress, a rescuer can wear a liquid-cooled hood and vest which absorbs heat, thereby reducing the heat-induced strain on the rescuer's heart and circulatory system. How It Works Liquid coolant is continuously circulated through a self-contained system in which the coolant is chilled by a heat sink on the wearer's belt. The coolant, which is a mixture of alcohol and water, is pumped from the heat sink to bladders inside the hood and vest where it absorbs body heat. After absorbing heat In the hood and vest areas, the coolant returns to the heat sink where it is rechilled by passing through a tube coiled around a steel can containing a block of ice. To adjust the temperature of coolant leaving the heat sink unit, a valve can be operated by the wearer, causing part of the flow to bypass the coil. A small pump and a rechargeable battery are also part of the assembly.

Addressing community concerns in relation to an economic activity, particularly when it causes significant community impacts, is especially important for the development of extractive industry projects. Pipelines comprise an integral part of many hydrocarbon developments, which may cause different effects on local economic development, communities and the environment compared with open cast mines. This paper explores community impacts associated with a case study of the oil pipeline æEastern Siberia-Pacific OceanÆ in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Russia. Based on semi-structured interviews, conducted in 2006 - 2008 in Russia, the paper investigates claims of local communities about potential impacts of the pipeline development of their environments and economic activities as well as community claims for greater involvement in sharing the benefits from this major infrastructure project. A community of Indigenous people, Evenk, is likely to be most profoundly affected by the development due to impacts on their traditional activities such as hunting and reindeer herding. The paper examines in detail the regional economic, social, environmental and Indigenous peoples concerns over the construction of the oil pipeline and investigates actions and methods adopted by community organisations to voice their concerns about the pipeline development. Finally, the paper assesses the process of interaction between the pipeline developers and regional stakeholders.

Anglo American Corporation and the University of British Columbia have developed a medium-temperature oxygen pressure leaching process for the extraction of copper from chalcopyrite concentrates in an acid-sulphate system (AAC/UBC process). Leaching is performed at 150°C and surfactants are added to disperse molten elemental sulphur from the unreacted sulphide surface to prevent liquid sulphur occlusion. Copper extractions of over 95% and elemental sulphur yields of around 60% were observed over a 2-hour average residence time in a continuous pilot autoclave. Sporadic blockages occurring under continuous conditions were found to be caused by the accumulation of molten elemental sulphur mixed with unreacted sulphide mineral. A batch programme of experimentation was undertaken to establish the reason for this phenomenon. Batch experiments were conducted at low pulp densities on concentrate samples with narrow size distributions and at similar solution compositions to those experienced in the pilot autoclave. The overall rate of chalcopyrite oxidation was shown, under approximately constant solution composition, to be a strong function of the total available mineral surface area. Initial copper extraction rates followed the shrinking particle kinetic model under intrinsic surface control. Deviation from shrinking particle kinetics was however observed after a certain oxidation time. Secondary electron images identified small (typically less than 20 µm) sulphur conglomerates at the point of deviation, which 'collected' unreacted chalcopyrite mineral particles and lowered the total mineral surface area available for oxidation. These sulphur clusters are thought to be the precursor for blockages experienced in the continuous pilot autoclave. These results emphasised the importance of fine grinding (P80 5-20 µm) and suggest that shorter residence times may minimise the formation of sulphur conglomerates in a continuous autoclave operating at medium temperature.

THIS apparatus was designed primarily to meet the demand for a quick, efficient stopping to seal off the burning area temporarily during a mine fire, but it can be used in any circumstance where an immediate brattice is required for ventilation control. In using the old style brattice, mine-rescue workers have found it difficult, in smoke-laden drifts and stopes, to erect an effective stopping with wooden frame and canvas. Stulls must first be cut to the proper length, the canvas tacked in place, and the numerous irregularities of the walls and back must be caulked. This operation requires the employment of axes, saws, and hammers, which cannot easily and safely be handled in dense smoke. The fire fighters have often been forced to abandon their brattice, unfinished, because of the rapid approach of the fire, or because of the exhausted sup- ply of oxygen in their breathing apparatus. "Rock failure process is generally recorded or measured using conventional sensors like strain gauges, seismic, micro-seismic, acoustic, electromagnetic and other techniques. The above sensors are either to be pasted on the surface of the rock sample or placed very near to it to capture the response of the sample with the increment of load. This requires precise tools to cut or polish the locations where sensors are to be placed. Moreover, deformation or acoustic or micro-seismic activities are recorded only at the locations where sensors are pasted.Recent development in Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique has shown promise to measure deformation / strain at every location of the surface of a sample. In DIC, two images (reference and deformed) are taken within a small time interval of the same object are compared to estimate the change in reflectance as a function of displacement, velocity or rate of strain at each pixel while the object is undergoing through a loading process. In this study, extended digital image correlation (X-DIC) technique has been implemented using 4-noded quadrilateral elements with a discontinuity surface in the deformed image. The continuous and enriched displacements are estimated at each node.The X-DIC method is verified using numerically generated images. The study has been further extended to evaluate the performance of X-DIC method on deformation analysis of experimental samples under uni-axial loading condition. The results of this study show that X-DIC method is an effective tool for determination of displacements of the entire surface of a rock sample having a discrete crack or discontinuity in a non-contact manner. This method demonstrates the applicability to investigate rock failure mechanism for the entire sample in a laboratory set up as well as monitoring of pillar failure mechanism in underground mines."

Lime Cement column stabilization of soft clay and sand in Salt Lake City, Utah and in San Francisco California is described and discussed. Stabilization permitted the construction, in a single stage, of a 14 m MSE wall on "medium" clay in Salt Lake City. It was used to mitigate the potential for liquefaction in San Francisco and to stabilize the Young Bay Mud beneath the BART extension to San Francisco Airport. These applications are described and the field measurements of performance are reported.

Various influences determine how an Environmental Management System (EMS) for a mining or petroleum project is developed and administered. These influences include the environmental and resource legislation applying to the project, the culture of the organisation, the environmental sensitivity of the area, and the administrative policies of the regulatory agencies involved. While financial penalties and even imprisonment may be imposed for non-compliance with environmental legislation, there are other compelling reasons for the establishment of an effective EMS. If a company wishes to be considered by Governments for the grant of exploration or mining rights, it is important that it can demonstrate environmentally responsible operations at existing facilities. The development of an effective EMS requires commitment from the Board of the company and the issue of an Environmental Policy to empower all levels of the staff and workforce to achieve environmentally responsible operations. This must be supported by the provision of appropriate human and financial resources, and environmental training of staff at all levels from the Board to the mine site, workshop and office. A regular environmental auditing programme is essential to ensure that the EMS is in place and is effective in achieving compliance with regulatory requirements, corporate policies and protection of the environment. An EMS can be developed on the basis of existing management systems, quality management systems, existing and emerging environmental management standards (such as BS7750 and ISOI4000), or sophisticated computerised systems which may incorporate international experience, standards, and codes of practice.

In this paper results from industrial trials of CaC2 injection during stainless steel production in an electric arc furnace at Sandvik Steel is presented. The main purpose of the investigation was to analyse the effect of the injection on slag foaming and final chromium oxide concentration in slag. The results show that both an increase in slag foaming and a decrease of the final chromium oxide could be obtained during the charges with CaC2injection. On the basis of the results, the economical requirements are also discussed. Both the technical and economical requirements could be achieved for steels alloyed with Mo. In order to secure the economical requirements for all steel grades of interest, the injection technology must be further developed. It would also be important to utilize the positive effect of the slag foaming on the electric energy consumption. The work has been performed as a part of MEFOS frame research programme with participants from Sandvik Steel, AKZO Nobel and Avesta Polarit. High temperatures encountered by mine rescue teams during emergency situations may cause severe physiological strain, hindering the men from carrying out rescue and recovery missions. A prototype ice-cooling garment (ICG) was developed by the Bureau of Mines to alleviate physiological strain due to heat stress. The effectiveness of the garment was tested with acclimatized and unacclimatized subjects at a typical work rate (1,200 Btu/hr) expected during rescue operations and at various hot environments (97° to 113° F dry bulb and 80° to 89° F wet bulb). During exposures with the ice cooling garment, the subjects were able to maintain a safe deep body temperature of 100.4° F or below Without the garment, the deep body temperature rose beyond values of 100.4° F, a condition considered unsafe for continuous work in hot conditions. Both heart rate and skin temperature values were lower while wearing the ICG. Subjective observation also indicated a marked benefit by wearing the ICG.

Sustained elevated metal and coal prices in 2011 continued to drive mining projects across British Columbia. The province is the top producer of copper, exporter of coal and the only producer of molybdenum in Canada. The province also produces significant amounts of gold, silver, lead and zinc and more than 30 industrial minerals. The total 2011 value of solid metal production is an estimated $8.6 billion and the outlook for 2012 is positive. British Columbia is poised to bring several new mines onstream in the next few years. Construction continues at the New Afton and Mt Milligan copper-gold projects that are anticipated to be open in 2012 and 2013, respectively. The provincial Environmental Assessment Office indicates there are 26 mine proposals in process with three currently under review and 23 in the preapplication stage. The following text briefly describes 2011 metal and coal mining activities in the five regions reported on by the provinces? regional geologists (Fig. 1).

The causes of ferrosilicon loss from Dense Media Separation (DMS) plants, and the related properties of ferrosilicon, are identified. Two characteristics, corrosion resistance and saturation magnetisation, are examined in detail. The chemistry of the corrosion mechanism is described and its relationship to plant parameters discussed. Methods of reducing corrosion losses are proposed. Lack of particle homogeneity, and its influence on corrosion and abrasion is noted. The relationship between low magnetic susceptibility-and increased magnetic separator losses is demonstrated experimentally.

The A5 road in the United Kingdom forms an ancient and well-used route through the hills and mountains of North Wales. In the 1990?s a programme of work was conducted to upgrade the road to modern standards. As part of this work a new cutting was constructed to bypass a portion of road routed through a gorge close to the village of Ty Nant. This new cutting was formed by drilling and blasting and included much pre-splitting and extensive rock bolting. This operation caused much concern to local residents relating to vibration, air overpressure and flyrock.

O trabalho estudou a formação, a interação com a escória e a solidificação de inclusões geradas durante o processamento de aços dual-phase com alto teor de silício (>1%). A composição destes aços, se não bem controlada, pode gerar inclusões sólidas de sílica pura durante o lingotamento contínuo. Para o estudo, foram feitas simulações termodinâmicas com o software computacional FactSage 6.4. As simulações mostraram que os fatores mais importantes para a composição inicial das inclusões é a relação %Mn/%Si e o teor de alumínio dissolvido no aço. Ao interagir com a escória, a tendência é que as inclusões se aproximem da sua composição ao longo do tempo. Durante a solidificação, a maioria das inclusões apresentou fases deformáveis e de baixo ponto de fusão, com exceção das inclusões sem CaO e da inclusão com 25% de Al2O3 e teor intermediário de CaO, que apresentaram as fases tridimita, coríndon e gehlenita de alto ponto de fusão e não-deformáveis.

"There is an ever-increasing demand these days for efficient methods of removing metals from solutions especially for selectively recovering a particular metal from a mixture of metals in solution.Up until the mid l 930's the only methods widely practiced for such separations involved precipitation techniques or electrolysis. Both these methods have limitations and indeed can only be used for certain metals.It is only within the last 40 years or so when synthetic ion exchange materials became available that chemists in industry and universities have been able to apply ion exchange techniques to a wide variety of separations that not only would be impossible by precipitation methods but which are now achieved with much greater efficiency.Ion Exchange TechniquesIon exchange is a unit process that can be applied using either liquid ion exchangers or solid resin particles. Liquid ion exchange - or solvent extraction as it is often referred to - is used in a number of special areas dictated mainly by the nature of the separation.On the other hand, ion exchange resins are much more widely used and consequently a great deal more is known about their application to a variety of metal separations.In both systems there is a loss of the ion exchange material which in the case of solvent extraction results in hydrocarbons going to waste. The ion exchange resin systems lose resin in the form of small particles, referred to as ""resin fines"", and these are insoluble.The loss of liquid ion exchanger is due to the fact that it is slightly soluble in water and consequently the loss is a function of the volume of liquid with which it comes into contact and is not related to the amount of metal processed."

The advent of low-quality export coal demand has brought a new range of possibilities to the South African coal industry. Products that traditionally were only of value to the domestic or combustion industry sectors now have the potential to be exported, with only minor amounts of upgrading required through beneficiation. Comparatively high steam-coal export prices can be obtained for lowquality export coal, which enhances the economic feasibility of expanding low-quality thermal coal exports. There are, however, increasing concerns about the feasibility of lower quality thermal coal exports and the broader implications. These concerns relate to the environmental impact of low-quality thermal coal production for export and the inherent threat to the security of domestic thermal coal supply in South Africa. Against this background, this paper serves to explain the extended value chain in the production of export coal. The technical and economic advantages and disadvantages of low-grade exports versus coal production for domestic use are evaluated. The value chain estimation is calculated by the beneficiation modelling and characterization of two coals. Based on the value estimation, the lowgrade export production scenario, and finally the modelling of potential pollutant distribution, are described. Rehabilitation of mining sites helps to achieve the purpose 5(2c) of The Resource Management Act 1991 û æavoiding, remedying, or mitigating any adverse effects of activities on the environmentÆ. The environmental outcomes for recent and current mining operations on the West Coast are variable. There are some exemplary mining operations which are restoring or even improving land use and environmental factors in the region, particularly those operated by the larger mining companies. There are also examples of an exploitative mentality where the environment and land have been severely degraded by mining activities. Technology has been developed to prevent a repetition of the historical destruction of the environment through mining. Failure to rehabilitate mined land is no longer acceptable to the New Zealand public in the 1990s and damages the credibility of the mining industry. Examples of successful mine site rehabilitation to pastoral farming and to production or plantation forestry are illustrated from the alluvial gold mining industry. Planning, sequencing of operations, the utilization of sailor plant growth materials, and aftercare are key factors in successful land rehabilitation to these productive uses. There is also a recent focus on restoring indigenous forests and wetlands at both coal and gold mining sites, particularly for mines on or adjacent to the conservation estate. The results of scientific research and efforts by the industry on techniques for rehabilitating rainforest and pakihi wetland after mining are presented, particularly from the Giles Creek Dunoille Coal Mine. There is a need for further research and trials to apply and extend rehabilitation techniques to other geological and environmental situations, particularly to mines in mountainous areas and to difficult environments like the coal measures ecosystems of the plateaux above Westport.

OWING to two large falls of ground which resulted in serious accidents occurring towards the end of 1908, it became evident that the "open chamber" system then in use was unsuitable for the conditions existing in the Mount lVIorgan mine. It will be admitted that in all mining operation, the first consideration is the economy of the system adopted, combined with its safety and ability to give the desired output. A sectional system with square sets has been introduced into the mine, in which due attention has been paid to these factors. In this paper a brief description of this system will be given. An outline of those previously used will be ineluded, as it is necessary to understand the eonditions which existed in the mine at the initiation of the sectional system. Outside the actual mining methods employed, various points that might prove of interest will be touched on.The square set system of mining has been in use throughout the stopes in the gold ore in the upper levels of the mine since underground operations were started in Mount Morgan.
