Mining has always been, and still is, an activity which is vital for the development of mankind. This is because a predominant proportion of industrial products and energy is produced from raw materials that are excavated using mining methods. The need for environmental protection and the close proximity of urban settlements and mines in Slovenia have necessitated ever stricter requirements for the excavation of raw materials and introduction of more environmentally-friendly mining methods. This is achieved by implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of raw material excavation within the scope of mining methods. In surface mines, this means prompt reclamation of the degraded surfaces, and in underground mines the use of methods with minimized impact on the surface and on underground water. In underground mines, mining methods with backfilling installed according to the multi-barrier disposal system are the only ones that allow the possibility of implementing a closed eco-technological cycle of excavating raw materials. Various industrial waste materials are also included in the backfilling material in order to improve its strength properties. Backfilling consisting of several different waste materials is produced in the form of a composite. Before backfilling consisting of waste material composites can even begin to be used in mines, an environmental impact assessment of its suitability for mines needs to be made. In order to make such an assessment, a pressure leaching cell and an open diffusion cell were made, i.e. a pressure leachate test and a sorption test were developed. The two cells and the developed tests will enable the study of the influence of backfilling on the environment if installed in an underground mine. The pressure leachate test performed with the use of the pressure leaching cell simulates leaching from a consolidated backfill during the seeping of underground water into the backfilling material under pressure. The sorption test performed in an open diffusion cell simulates the flow of eluate leached from the backfilling material through the rock/geotechnical barrier. The two tests were developed in such a manner that they are performed either in succession immediately after one another, but they can also be performed separately at a certain time interval. The paper presents an assessment of the suitability of backfilling made of different waste material composites. The European Union (EU) completed a new directive 2002/44/EC1 called the Physical Agents Directive (PAD) that establishes action and limit values for hand-arm and whole body vibrations. The directive specifies that: “…workers shall not be exposed above the exposure ‘limit value’.” 1 and “…once the exposure action values … are exceeded, the employer shall establish and implement a programme of technical and/or organisational measures intended to reduce to a minimum exposure to mechanical vibration and the attendant risks…” 1 The PAD limit value is effective for new machines starting July 6, 2007 and for used machines by at least July 6, 2010. These requirements apply to the users of machines, but machine manufacturers will be challenged to provide machines and information to help the users comply with the directive. Caterpillar manufactures machines with the goal of enabling our customers to comply with all regulations dealing with health and safety. Caterpillar designs all of our machines to provide a safe, comfortable and productive work environment. This study was to determine if seat suspensions could provide a reduction in the vibration environment experienced by operators of Caterpillar mid sized (<50,000KG) Track Type Tractors Methods Seat manufacturers were asked to provide seat suspensions that provide improved isolation over and above current seat suspension. Each supplier was provided with ride profiles and was asked to demonstrate the vibration reduction on a shaker table. Two suppliers provided suspensions that were compared with the current seat suspension in a field study. Three full factorial experiments were conducted. The first experiment was to evaluate overall suspension performance for four operations. The second experiment was to determine the benefit of the adjustable vertical damper at three different levels and the third experiment was to determine the effect of the fore/aft and side/side isolators. Six operators were used for the study. Acceleration was measured at the seat base and at the operator seat pad. Both the transfer function and the ISO 2631 RMS ride values were used to determine the seat suspension’s effectiveness of isolating the operator from vibration. A structured questionnaire was used to determine the operators’ subjective assessment of the seat suspensions. Results There was significant operator-to-operator variability in the vertical direction (>35%), however there was little variability in the fore/aft and side/side direction based on seat base

It is commonly accepted that the tension of roof bolts can be used as a measure of the effectiveness of roof support performance in coal bearing strata. The conceptual base for the assumption originates from beam theory. Roof bolt tension acting across the bedding and other weakness planes increases friction, preventing potential separation and slippage within the roof strata and therefore, increases the stiffness of the roof beam between the open face and the rock-mass enclosed within the anchorage. Thus, it is important to monitor roof bolt tension, especially for research purposes, and consequently many measuring systems were developed based on numerous working principles. Research planned by the Department of Mining Engineering at the University of Kentucky required a large number of tension measuring devices of high precision. These were intended to operate reliably in corrosive mine environment over long periods of time. After evaluating the existing systems, it was decided to develop a new type of roof bolt dynamometer which would fulfill the above requirements at minimal Cost. Nearly one hundred such dynamometers were constructed, calibrated and installed in two underground mines. They remained in service for a period of one Year, producing a valuable database for the Project. In this paper the working principle of this new type of dynamometer will be described and technical considerations and samples of the collected data will be given.

Iran&apos;s petroleum industry is nearly 50 years old and the oldest in the Near East. According to published figures, Iran ranks third in production and reserves in the Near East. These reserves (including probable reserves) are estimated at 35 billion barrels and constitute about 11 percent of the world&apos;s total. Iran is the sixth largest producer of crude petroleum in the world. The 1961 output of more than 430 million barrels was 5 percent of total world out-put for the year. In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

Common water-miscible organic solvents including DMSO, DMF, methanol, ethanol, acetone and THF in combination with HCl and low concentrations of H2O2 were investigated for dissolution of gold. THF showed the best result demonstrating that gold powder could be completely dissolved in 1.5 hours in 1.0 mol/L HCl and 0.2 mol/L H2O2. No complete gold dissolution was observed for the rest of solvents even after 24 hours. The rate of gold dissolution was measured by dissolving gold wire in THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture. The rate of gold dissolution in optimised condition was 75 g m-2 h-1 at room temperature and significantly increased to 590 g m-2 h-1 by raising the temperature up to 60 oC. Although a THF/HCl/H2O2 mixture showed a slower dissolution rate in comparison with aqua regia, however the applied conditions are considerably milder which is highly promising for gold leaching in an industrial scale.

CT scanning tests were used to detect the pre-existing fracture systems of 36 cubical coal blocks. Systematic procedures were developed to construct the pre-existing fracture geometry of the cubical coal blocks from the CT images. Based on the constructed fracture systems, the fracture tensor components were calculated to capture the directional effects of the fracture system of the cubical coal blocks. The effect of the pre-existing fracture system and different combinations of confining stresses on the strength and deformability of coal masses was investigated at a preliminary level using some true triaxial test results and the computed fracture tensor components. The strength of the cubical coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be closely related to the summation of the fracture tensor components in the two perpendicular directions to the loading direction and the level of the confining stress system. The deformability of cubic coal blocks in the loading direction was found to be correlated to the fracture tensor component in the same direction.

"The crude zinc oxides (CZO) produced in any thennal process dealing with EAF dust also contain lead, cadmium, and a considerable amount of halides (chlorides and fluorides). The high halide contents make these crude zinc oxides less and less attractive, both technically and economically, and a further refining procedure is nece'ssary to meet the zinc and zinc oxide market requirements.Hydrometallurgical techniques commercially used to dehalogenate the crude zinc oxides are not effective enough to upgrade the crude zinc oxides to the required specification for their direct use in the traditional sulphuric electrolysis by primary zinc producers.The EZINEX® PROCESS has solved the problem of the halides contained in the crude zinc oxides. This process is the only proven technology electrowinning zinc from a chloridebased electrolyte in a conventional cell house. This paper discusses the process economics taking the data from feasibility studies of different size commercial plants."

Este trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a redução por hidrogênio de sínteres produzidos com coque e carvão vegetal. Para isso, foram realizados 6 ensaios de sinterização substituindo o coque por carvão vegetal como combustível do processo. As substituições foram de 0%, 8%, 16%, 25%, 50% e 100%. As amostras com substituições de 0%, 50% e 100% foram reduzidas em termobalança, durante 6 horas, em temperatura de 1000°C, utilizando uma mistura de gases contendo Argônio – 10% Hidrogênio. Os resultados mostraram que, para as misturas produzidas, o sínter fabricado com carvão vegetal diminuiu os índices de produção da sinterização e de resistência do sínter. Contudo, o sínter produzido utilizando somente carvão vegetal como combustível, apresentou maior redutibilidade.

The Macraes Gold Project, operated by GRD Macraes Limited, engaged GRD Minproc Limited to assist with the evaluation of a pressure oxidation circuit, this being the key component of a recovery enhancement project. The initial study gave sufficient confidence in the process to enter into project execution. GRD Macraes Limited was the first company to license Newmont Mining Corporation&apos;s pressure oxidation technology, which aims to improve gold recovery from the carbonaceous sulfidic flotation concentrate. This paper outlines the fundamental chemistry of the process followed by a description of the plant that was ultimately installed. A summary of the commissioning is given together with an overview of the production results to date. The project ramp-up was rapid, with design temperature and throughput being achieved within days of hot commissioning. Gold recoveries have exceeded expectations, improving from around 70% prior to the installation of pressure oxidation to above 84%. The project has increased the nominal gold output at Macraes from 120,000 oz/y to 170,000 oz/y. On-going plant optimisation for process parameters is discussed, giving rise to flexibility in gold production, with key controlling parameters exceeding design.

The reduction of manganese oxide from a basic slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron at steelmaking temperatures was studied to determine the rate-controlling step for the process. The experiments were carried out under an argon atmosphere in a resistance-heated vertical-tube furnace. The two liquid phases, slag and metal, were held in zirconia crucibles. Sampling and chemical analysis of the slag phase led to time-concentration curves for the system. Results obtained by varying parameters such as temperature, stirring rate, concentration, and melt geometry defined the limiting reaction mechanism. The reduction of manganese oxide by silicon is a fast reaction and reached equilibrium within 90 min. The rate of stirring has a marked effect on the reaction rate, while, on the other hand, the effect of temperature is very small. This identifies the rate-controlling step as diffusion rather than interfaciul chemical reaction. The variation of other parameters revealed that a) diffusion of manganese in the iron phase is the slow step, b) the value of D/6 for manganese in iron at 1550°C is 7x 10-4 cm per sec, c) the energy of activation for the apparent rate constant is 7 kcal per mole, and d) increasing the amount of silicon in the iron decreases the diffusion coefficient of manganese. THE equilibrium relations pertinent to the reduction of manganese oxide from a steelmaking slag by silicon dissolved in liquid iron have been studied, but little is known about the mechanisms that control the rate of the process. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the rate of reduction by silicon and to determine the rate-limiting step. The effects of stirring rate, temperature, composition, and melt geometry were investigated as a means of identifying the controlling step. On the laboratory scale, relatively little work has been done in the area of slag-metal kinetics, primarily because of the problems confronted in attempting to contain liquid slags and metals in laboratory crucibles at steelmaking temperatures. Since graphite is an ideal material for a crucible, several investigations have been carried out on the reduction of various oxides from a slag by carbon in graphite-saturated iron and on the transfer of sulfur between a slag and graphite-saturated iron. Most of this work has been performed in induction furnaces. Studies where the container was not graphite are extremely limited. A single kinetic study of manganese transfer between molten iron and basic slags was carried out by Sano, Shiomi, and Matsushita.&apos; These investigators prepared calcium oxide and titanium oxide crucibles to contain the two-phase system. Only a few experiments were carried out and the results had to be treated qualitatively. Despite the paucity of kinetic data, a large quantity of information is available in the literature concerning the thermodynamics2-12 and physical properties&apos;3-21 of the slags containing manganese oxide and the dilute liquid iron alloys containing manganese and silicon which were involved in this research program. EXPERIMENTAL METHOD A vertical-tube resistance-heated furnace was used in this investigation to study the slag-metal reaction Although most previous slag-metal studies were carried out in induction furnaces, a resistance furnace has several advantages including better control of temperature and stirring rate. Hence, a resistance furnace was selected for this study, and its design is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The Roof Fall Risk Index (RFRI) is a new method introduced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to assist the underground stone mine operator in 1) assessing defects the mine strata and 2) rating the relative roof fall risk these defects pose. The RFRI utilizes observational techniques to identify defects in the roof strata caused by local geologic, stress, and mining conditions. Assessment values for ten defined defect categories provides the foundation for estimating a range of risk conditions between 0 and 100 that define the potential for a roof fall. This paper examines how the defect information is collected using two field verification sites and proposes methods to analyze the RFRI data. These examples provide information on how well the method replicates observed conditions and how it might be applied in practice.

Introduction MINING IS THE BRANCH OF INDUSTRY involving the exploration and removal of minerals from the earth (figure 1). Mining is one of the oldest and most important endeavors of humankind, because it provides the raw ingredients for most of the material world around us and, like agriculture, is the lifeblood of civilization. The main objective of any type of mining is to remove the valuable material economically and safely with minimum damage to the surrounding environment. The Earth has many natural resources on which we depend that must be mined. Coal, oil, gas, and other mineral fuels are used for heating electricity, and numerous industrial processes. Nonfuel minerals such as iron ore, precious metals, and industrial metals, and nonmetallic materials like sodium and potassium are used in chemical and agricultural applications. Even crushed stone used in road building and other construction projects must be mined. Mining affects our standard of living and impacts almost everything we do. A myriad of items that we use in our homes and offices and for transportation, communications, and national defense all require minerals (figure 2). For example, more than 30 different minerals are needed to make a television or telephone! Table 1 lists several commonly mined materials and some of the end uses in our daily lives.

The Greenawalt electrolytic copper extraction process is applicable to suitable oxide ores, sulfide ores and concentrates, and low-grade matte. The process is self-sustaining in acid on sulfide ores or concentrates, on mixed ores, on high-grade oxidized ores; and on low-grade oxidized ores the amount of acid to be purchased or manufactured is greatly reduced. The ferric iron is under easy control, and copper may be effectively deposited from solutions of any acid or iron content likely to be used in copper leaching. From 60 to 75 per cent. of the copper may be removed from the solution in passing through the electrolytic department, before returning the solution to the ore. The amount of copper requiring chemical precipitation, from the waste and foul solutions, is only about 5.0 per cent, of the total copper produced, and this 5.0 per cent. is converted into the electrolytic metal in the regular operation of the process. The entire process can be made practically automatic, and can be carried out mechanically. There is no uncertain departure of any kind in the application of the process; no unusual or unproved apparatus is used. EVER since electrolytic copper refining gave promise of success, about a half century ago, efforts have been made to apply the idea to the extraction of copper from its ores. The methods of attack have, usually, been to leach with a dilute acid and then to deposit electrolytically the copper from the resulting solution with the simultaneous regeneration of the solvent used in the process. Many efforts have been made, and many patents have been taken out, both in the United States and abroad, to give this idea practical application, but only within the past few years have the difficulties been surmounted. Leaching and electrolysis, as applied to copper ores, are among the most promising fields in modern metallurgy. New conditions are arising, which will bring the wet methods into prominence; while high freight rates and increasing cost of fuel will tend to limit smelting to highly favored localities. The possibilities offered by the installation of hydro-electric plants and the greatly enlarged range of power transmission will greatly widen the field of electrolytic methods.

"Asbestos" is a name applied to a group of naturally fibrous minerals. Because it has the fibrous characteristics of silk or cotton and at the same time will not burn and has other advantageous properties as well, asbestos has specialized uses for which no adequate substitutes are yet available. Asbestos furnishes a major raw material for a great variety of essential products, the manufacture of which constitutes a vast industry. Asbestos generally occurs in irregular veins scattered throughout rock masses. Most of the fiber-bearing rock is mined in huge open-pit or underground workings. The fibers are separated from the rock and sorted into groups, according to length, in large, complex mills. The longer fibers are stripped to textile plants, where they are further fiberized and prepared in special machines and are used for spinning into yarn and weaving into unburnable cloth that has many important uses. The shorter fibers, which are much more abundant than the long ones, are used in asbestos-cement building materials in heat-insulating products and for a multitude of other applications. These processes and uses are covered in considerable detail in later sections of this report.

The gold that is not recovered by a particular process is refractory to that process. A study to determine how the refractory gold is associated in the ore constituents usually indicates the needed improvement in the process or additional methods for bettering recovery. In preliminary work, segregation of the various minerals, gangue or impurities, and data showing the reactions of each in the recovery method readily confines the refractory gold to a certain part on which extensive research can be directed. In this dissecting plan, the microscope is an important aid in locating the refractory gold but should be supplemented by chemical tests. Each ore is an individual problem until the association of the gold has been determined. Knowing the problem through the interfering minerals or elements, the solution often is only the application of part of a former known practice as an auxiliary or additional feature. In the treatment plan for most gold ores, it has been the custom to try each of the usual recovery methods or combinations thereof, accepting the best results on a basis of the lowest cost. A better plan includes knowledge of the association of the gold and the various minerals from which it is to be recovered. This presents reasonable foresight into the problems that should be expected and permits some provision for avoiding probable difficulties. The preliminary work should include: Determination of the percentage of free gold with classification showing size of gold particles to be expected; determination of the percentage of gold associated with each mineral and whether it be freed from the mineral by crushing; and an analysis of representative samples of the ore to include other valuable minerals and the form in which they occur.

The first public garage in the city of Dubrovnik has been built in highly urbanized area, on location Ilina Glavica. The excavation of the building pit has been done partly by construction machinery, i.e. by hydraulic hammer for excavations and partly by drilling and blasting. In the vicinity of the building pit there are houses, buildings and two schools. Drilling operations and blasting have been performed during the working hours while regular school classes have been held and activities in other buildings took place. The nearest structures are some 5 to 10 meters (16.4 to 32.8 ft) away from the building pit, which makes it even more difficult to perform blasting operations in the urban environment. For the purpose of determining safe and permissible oscillation velocity limits, i.e. the proportion of seismic effects of blasting, a trial blasting has been conducted. The permissible mass of explosive charge has been determined by original method respecting the requirements of existing standards (ISO 4866, DIN 4150, US BM 8507), which determine the permissible oscillation velocities in relation to their frequencies. According to measuring results of the oscillation velocity during the test blasting the design parameters of blasting field have been corrected and zones have been established within the excavation area considering the possible effect of blasting to the building pit environment. Further blasting operations have been performed in stages, in smaller blasting fields with deck charge within a blast hole while respecting the requirements of the transport possibilities for the blasted rock mass within the building pit and performance of control measurements of oscillation velocity for each blasting. Through application of all the protection measures, design solutions and systematic control of performance of activities the complete excavation by blasting has been completed without any damage on neighboring structures/buildings. This article presents these solutions and methods for reduction of seismic impact of blasting to the environment.

Les substrats organiques sont à la base des biofiltres utilisant la réduction des sulfates pour générer de l&apos;alcalinité et diminuer la concentration des métaux dans des effluents contaminés. Afin de tester l&apos;efficacité de résidus forestiers utilisés dans de tels contextes, cinq types d&apos;écorce de nature et d&apos;âge variables ont été placés dans des contenants hermétiques et mis en présence d&apos;une solution synthétique de drainage minier acide. Le pH, l&apos;alcalinité et les concentrations de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été mesurés à intervalles réguliers pendant 70 jours. L&apos;importance d&apos;un éventuel neutralisant minéral et du type de souches de bactéries sulfato-réductrices pour l&apos;initiation et l&apos;évolution des réactions d&apos;oxydo-réduction ont été évalués en utilisant de la dolomite ainsi que des inocula de sédiments portuaires réducteurs et de boues d&apos;usine d&apos;épuration. Une augmentation de pH et des diminutions de Fe2+ et SO4 2- ont été notées dans tous les réacteurs. En l&apos;absence de dolomite, le pH augmentait de 1.6 à 5-6, Fe2+ diminuait de 400 à moins de 5-100 mg/L, et SO4 2- diminuait de 2500 à 750-1250 mg/L. Les échantillons inoculés avec des sédiments s&apos;avéraient légèrement plus performants que ceux avec boues. En présence de dolomite, le pH atteignait 6.5-7.0, et Fe2+ et SO4 2- tombaient à <5 et 20-40 mg/L, respectivement. Le degré de réactivité des résidus forestiers n&apos;était pas une simple fonction inverse de leur âge. Les échantillons ayant le mieux réagi, bien que parmi les plus vieux testés (années 1980), étaient ceux contenant une proportion significative d&apos;écorces de feuillus et peu de bran de scie. Les échantillons avec des proportions élevées d&apos;écorce de conifères ou de bran de scie étaient associés à des taux de réduction moindre. Nonobstant l&apos;amélioration rapide des conditions obtenue avec la dolomite, grâce à une neutralisation initiale plus prompte, il s&apos;avère que le type de résidus forestiers éventuellement utilisé dans une barrière réactive est de première importance pour l&apos;efficacité des mécanismes de réduction. Un système basé sur l&apos;utilisation de résidus forestiers devrait utiliser des écorces (plutôt que du bois) provenant de feuillus (plutôt que de conifères).

SINCE the beginning of this century the non-ferrous mineral industry has contributed $17,809,-000,000 to the economic growth of Canada. To contemplate the vast amount of investment capital required and the resultant beneficial distribution of these billions of dollars for labour, transportation, supplies, taxes and dividends, challenges the imagination. It is the purpose of this paper, (a) to trace the development of the industry since its formative period to the present; (b) to discuss the current situation and problems; and ( c) to attempt to peer into the hazy future. Although there are 21 metals currently being produced in Canada which are classified as non-ferrous, or as alloying metals, copper, lead, zinc, nickel-the metals which will be discussed in this paper-constitute almost 60 per cent of their total value. ;The story
