Keywords: Aluminum alloy 3004, Solidification rate, Homogenization, Second phase particles The effects of the fineness of as-solidified cast microstructure and temperature on the response of aluminum alloy 3004 to homogenization heat treatment (a.k.a. preheat) have been investigated. The study was conducted at 538oC and 595oC on directionally solidified laboratory-size ingots with a range of solidification rate of 0.10oC/s to 29.4oC/s. Optical and electron microscopy, quantitative image analysis, electrical conductivity, and electron probe microanalysis were used to quantify the effects of the homogenization heat treatment on the microstructure of aluminum alloy 3004. In general, increase in fineness of as-cast microstructure and homogenization temperature enhances the a-transformation reaction, dissolution of Mg2Si, elimination of dendritic microsegregation, and dispersoid formation. The homogenization heat treatment reduces the average size of second phase particles in castings solidified at <1oC/s. However, in castings solidified at above 1oC /s, homogenization causes the coarsening of the second phase particles. Mn in solid solution is independent of homogenization heat treatment temperature.

About five years ago we showed that it is possible to use the spectral in- formation in the light emitted by the off-gas flame of a PS converter for on-line production control. Very recently measurements have been performed using improved optical equipment and data evaluation software, resulting in both improved accuracy and the establishment of new optical process parameters. Using the optical signals the slag heats could be stopped at a predetermined Cu content of the white metal with an accuracy of +0.2% Cu m the range 74-78% Cu. A good correlation was found between the slag composition and optical data, providing a possibility for on-line monitoring of the SiO2 content of the slag. The measurements indicate the possibility of predicting the optimum end-point of the copper-making stage and having real time information on the impurity removal. Factors influencing the optical parameters, such as blowrate, Pb content, temperature etc. will be discussed.

"An American Iron and Steel Institute Task Force evaluated developing direct steelmaking technology worldwide to seek a replacement for the coke-oven, blast-furnace, basic-oxygen process technology now in use. To remain internationally competitive it is essential to move away from the traditional series of batch processes towards continuous processing and the associated energy savings which are possible with high technology process control systems. The group identified in-bath smelting of iron ore pellets or fines with coal as the process most sui table for domestic raw materials (including abundant scrap) and called for research to study operation with varying degrees of preheat and prereduction of the ore by the gases generated from the coal and various degrees of combustion of these gases above the melt.A coordinated, 3-year, $27 million, direct steelmaking research program is proposed. Concurrent projects include design, construction, and experimental operation of an in-bath smelting pilot plant; modeling, simulations, and laboratory-scale experiments at universities on slag-phase and metallicphase reactions and interactions; and large-scale heat transfer and reaction rate trials. Also included are modeling studies and pilot plant trials of on-stream decarbonization and desulfurization; application of circulating fluid bed technology to fine ore reduction and hot gas cleanup; and specific heat transfer and fluid flow research projects.IntroductionThe American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI), based on the Task Force studying direct steelmaking, believes strongly that a coordinated program of research on the reduction of domestic raw materials to liquid steel should be undertaken as part of the Steel Initiative program. During copper electrowinning in sulphate electrolyte, intense oxygen evolution takes place at the anode. Lead alloy anodes are progressively replaced by dimensionally stable anodes in order to avoid the cathode contamination by dissolved lead. The electroactive coating of these anodes has to be as cheap as possible, adherent to the substrate, electrochemically stable and has to be efficient at high current density and high temperature. This requirement is even demanding in case of copper electrodeposition for the production of thin copper foils for the electronic industry. The production of thin (20 µm thick) copper foils for the printed circuit boards requires high purity copper electrodeposited at a current density as high as 7,000 A/m2. The choice of a long term coating composition is driven by economics. The purpose of this paper is mainly to review the anode compositions suitable for copper electrowinning and for copper electrodeposition at high current density. A short description of preliminary results obtained with a new anode coating on a titanium substrate is also presented.

A physical model based on similarity principles was constructed for simulating the RH degasser of CST (Companhia Siderurgica Tubarao, Vitoria, ES, Brazil) to evaluate the circulation rate of the metal which essentially defines the degree of exposure of the metal to vacuum in the chamber and thus of the refining rate, The circulation rate on the other hand will influence the decarburization rate and removal of dissolved gases like nitrogen and hence it is essential to optimise this parameter to get maximum refining efficiency with minimum refining times, thus improving the productivity of the secondary refining process. Mixing characteristics in the ladle is evaluated by pulse tracer addition using conductivity-meters located at the down leg as well as at several locations in the ladle. The influence of gas injection through nozzles in the upleg with simultaneous bottom injection of gas as well as nozzle blockage on the circulation rates were investigated. Also simulation experiments of kinetics of decarburization were carried out using CO2 adsorption-desorption process in sodium hydroxide solution as circulating fluid and the effect of, bottom gas flow rate in this case was also evaluated. The results were carried over to prototype and to optimize the process.

A new assessment model has been proposed for metal production and its recycling system. The model consists of three processes, smelting of ore, cascading and upgrading of metal scrap. The present approach is to assess the total energy consumption of the system, by introducing two equations for describing the relationships between critical impurity content and the mass of production or scrap recycling. The total energy consumption in the system can be described as a function of recycling rate and performance of the upgrading process. The present model suggests that the impurity removal efficiency and yield in the upgrading process are essential to reduce the energy consumption in the systems. Especially, such points should be explicitly controlled in recycling of aluminum. The potential capability of this model was also discussed by obtaining several quantitative information required for the process design and the operational control of beneficial recycling of metals.

The mechanical properties of a low carbon low alloy steel in the austenite and _-ferrite regions have been examined by thermal-tensile tests using a Gleeble-1500D system at temperatures in the range 600oC to 1300oC and at a strain rate of 10-3/s; these being the conditions that apply to the unbending operation during the continuous casting of steel. The yield strength and tensile strength of steel decreased with increasing test temperature and the embrittlement zone occurred in the temperature range 800oC to 970oC. In the embrittlement zone, the fracture surfaces and microstructures of the tensile specimens were examined by scanning electron microscope. The results showed that the cause of the embrittlement at 950oC in which the minimum %R of A was around 36% is the second phase particles precipitated along the _ grain boundary during deformation leading to inter-granular brittle fracture.

China has abundant magnesite resource, but the low-grade and powder ores have always been rejected, which influences the comprehensive utilization of resource and often causes circumstance problems. The present work investigated the preparation of magnesia whisker using magnesite tailings as starting materials by preparation magnesium carbonate whisker as precursor firstly in the route of calcination, hydration, carbonation and pyrolysis, follows by second calcination of the precursor. The influence of pyrolysis conditions and additives on morphology of magnesium carbonate crystal as well as the influence of calcination conditions on morphology of magnesia whisker was investigated. The results showed that thermal decomposition products was MgCO3?3H2O. Magnesium carbonate whisker with length of 10~60 µm and the length-to-diameter ratio of 10~20 was prepared when soluble magnesium salt was added. While temperature was elevated at 1°C?min-1, magnesia whisker with length of 10~60µm was obtained.

The No. 3 reverberatory furnace at Phelps Dodge. Corporation&apos;s Morenci, Arizona copper smelter first received oxygen from a new oxygen plant during October 1982 and began operation with oxygen-fuel and oxygen sprinkle smelting burners which burn concentrate with oxygen. The furnace was completely converted to roof-mounted oxygen-fuel firing in October 1982. All conventional air-fuel bridge wall burners were extinguished at that time. The novel arch-mounted oxygen sprinkle smelting system began continuous operation April 1983. Since startup, unit fuel requirements decreased and furnace throughput significantly increased. Furnace off gas SO2 strength increased from an average of 1.5% SO2 to an average of 20% using only oxy-fuel burners. Oxygen sprinkle burner operation also has given excellent results, with the furnace off gas strength increasing to 35%-60% S02. There has been a reduction in overall arch temperatures, an increase in matte and slag temperatures, and a lowering of furnace bottom buildup with oxygen smelting. Furnace off gas is blended with converter off gas and treated in a sulfuric acid plant.

Allvac 718Plus is a newly developed superalloy with a good potential for use in fabricated aircraft engine structures when service temperatures exceed 650°C; the limit for standard alloy 718. Fabrication involves welding, where cracking usually is a prohibitive factor. Comparison of the solidification cracking behavior between these two alloys was made by Transvarestraint testing. It was shown that the total amount of cracking was significantly lower for 718Plus alloy, which was associated with a lower amount of ?/Laves or ?/NbC eutectic-type constituents. This in turn is believed to be due to the lower iron content of the Allvac 718Plus material. The analysis of alloying element segregation both within primary dendrite and interdendritic constituents clearly indicates that the segregation of Nb is the controlling factor in determining the final solidification microstructure in these alloys. The Nb concentrations of these constituents are significantly higher compared to the bulk alloy concentration. This was confirmed by the SEM-EDS analysis and calculations assessed with JMatPro, the latter also indicated that alloy 718 is more prone to form Laves and NbC eutectic-type constituents compared to Allvac 718Plus material.

Green chemistry principles will be discussed, and examples will be given of the use of Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) to selectively separate specialty metals such as cobalt, nickel, bismuth, rhenium, molybdenum, indium and germanium from various primary and secondary feed streams. Recovery of these metals has numerous advantages including (i) conservation of valuable resources, (ii) prevention of environmental damage, and (iii) elimination of capital and operating expenses due to re-processing or disposal of metal-bearing streams.

Due to high concentration of NaOH in the digested slurry after scheelite digestion, it is diluted to about 4N before filtration to separate sodium tungstate solution from the sludge (residue). However, in practice there may be deviations in the normality of NaOH present in the slurry. There may also be variations in the temperature of the slurry and filtration time. Slight variations in these parameters could cause tungsten losses in the sludge via the back reaction: Ca(OH)2 + Na2WO4? CaWO4 + 2NaOH This paper pertains to the effect of normality, temperature and time on the tungsten losses in the sludge that is separated from ?diluted-scheelite-slurry-in-NaOH? via filtration. Results indicated that tungsten losses in the filtered residue (sludge) were quite significant when the slurry temperature was kept at 70°C or higher. The effect of high temperature was less significant at the slurry normality of 3.6 or higher. Combination of low slurry normality (<3.6) and high temperature (>60°C) resulted into large W-losses in the sludge.

Even though there are conventional disposal methods (such as landfill and incineration) for e-waste, these methods have both economic and environmental disadvantages; recycling is a new waste management option which diverts end-of-life (EOL) electrical and electronic equipment (EEE) from landfill and incineration [1, 2]. Successful diversion strategy must be based on economic sustainability, technical feasibility and social support [3]. Synthesis of alumina-mullite-silicon carbide composite (Al2O3-Al6Si2O13-SiCw) was obtained in situ by carbothermal reduction of a mixture of kaolin and two different silica sources. The carbothermal reduction was carried out in a horizontal tube furnace under flow of argon gas. The standard Gibbs energy minimization method was used to calculate the equilibrium composition of the reacting species. The synthesized products were mixtures of alumina, mullite and silicon carbide in the form of whiskers. The effects of adding two different silica sources of rice husk ash and silica powder to the mixture of kaolin and activated carbon were investigated. XRD and SEM analyses indicate complete reaction of precursors to yield Al2O3- Al6Si2O13-SiC as product powders, with the SiC having whisker morphology.

Effect of retrogression and reaging treatment on hardness and stress corrosion cracking resistance of 7075 aluminum alloy was investigated. As received 7075 alloys in T6 temper condition were retrogressed at 170, 220, 240 and 380°C for different durations between 15 s and 60 min. Subsequent reaging was made at the T6 aging condition. Treated materials exhibited higher hardness and better stress corrosion cracking resistance than T6 temper in a wide range of retrogression temperature and time. The highest hardness was obtained after retrogression at 170°C for 210 s followed by reaging, corresponding to 20% hardness improvement. Improvement in stress corrosion cracking resistance of the alloy by as much as 85% was also observed. In this paper, improvements in hardness and stress corrosion cracking resistance are discussed on the basis of the microstructural changes during retrogression and reaging treatment.

Representative samples of the hydrothermal vein deposits of the bulk complex sulphide ore deposit, 10 km south of Ishiagu, in Ebonyin State, South Eastern part of Nigeria were collected from two small scale mining companies. The samples were mixed and successively crushed in a jaw crusher and cone crusher, and ground in a rod mill. Characterization was carried out with SEM, EDX, XRD, XRF and ICP-OES. Mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of sphalerite, galena, siderite, pyrite, quartz and chalcopyrite. X-ray Diffractometry showed that sphalerite mineral in the ore occurs as sphalerite ferrous with varied percentage of Zn and Fe within the various sizes while chalcopyrite occurs as a chalcopyrite group mineral with chemical formula Cu2MnSnS4. Results of the elemental analysis showed variations in elemental composition within the different sizes.

In Germany the automobile recycling is regulated by law. Current legislation requires that by the year 2015, eighty five w.-t. % of the components from used cars ill be materially recycled. Whilst for 10 w.-t. % of the materials a thermal utilization is certified, there are still some concrete questions that remain unanswered regarding the usability of single fractions. The recent innovative approaches to the concepts of used cars dismantling do not alter the fact that the majority of the materials of used cars still have to pass over the shredder and the connected processing aggregates. The status of the so called SLF (Shredder light fraction) which is about 25 w.-t. % w.-t. in used cars, has not been satisfactorily clarified. Furthermore questions still remain regarding the separation of the NMSF (nonmagnetic metal shredder fraction) which has to be separated in the single metallic fractions like stainless tell, copper, brass, zinc, etc. Attempts of optimization can be found. This paper analyses some of the difficulties being encountered by the automobile recycling industry in Germany, before reviewing some of the innovative approaches that the industry has introduced. Finally the paper goes on to describe the potential of automatic picking. Examples of a series of tests, utilizing this technology, in which a variety of products from a range of shredders were isolated are described in detail. This new technology provides a range of applications to the automobile recycling industry.
