"Measuring mud bed level in a sedimentation device is an important control variable. Methods used to date for this purpose have had limited success providing continuous, consistent measurements at a reasonable price. This paper describes a new instrument for detecting the mud bed / liquor interface as well as bed density profiles. The state of the bed is measured directly with sensors located in the thickener. Data from bench-scale and full-scale tests show that the bed level is well defined and easily detected. In addition, full-scale testing revealed unprecedented information about thickener beds. Variation in bed density gave new insight into thickener bed dynamics, providing design and control opportunities never before possible. This novel instrument can significantly improve thickener control by providing reliable and consistent bed level measurements. It is also capable of measuring bed density profiles that can potentially identify significant operating problems early enough to take corrective action before experiencing costly shut downs. INTRODUCTION Numerous studies and papers have been devoted to the subject of thickener design and operation to achieve specified throughput and discharge densities. Mathematical models have been developed that present methods for sizing thickeners and predicting performance under varying process conditions. The compression effect of deeper beds on dewatering performance is a recognized phenomenon (Wilhelm and Naide 1981). This is one variable of many that are inter-related and influence thickener performance. For example in the steady-state, continuous operation of a thickener, if the solids feed rate increases and the bed level remains the same, the underflow discharge rate must increase with the result of solids concentration being lower. The interactions of these parameters are at the heart of thickener models. One such model (Burger and Narvaez 2007), predicts solids concentration profiles increasing downward and discontinuities between settling zones. This model uses sediment height (bed level) as a parameter that influences capacity calculations to achieve the specified solids concentration of the underflow. Knowing the bed depth is critical to maintaining stable thickener operation. Implicit in these modeling strategies are some basic assumptions such as homogeneous distribution of solids in the different settling zones, plug flow of solids through the settling zones and steady state operation of the thickener. The accuracy of these assumptions has not been verified because there has been little visibility inside the bed of full size operating thickeners. Testing of the instrument presented in this paper demonstrates that it provides a degree of visibility of the dynamics in a thickener not previously possible and indicates that the basic assumptions of the modeling strategies may not be completely accurate."

The term "rare earths" is used to designate a group of elements, Numbers 57-71 which are closely related chemically. They were called "earths" because their oxides resemble those of the alkaline earths, and the designation "rare" was originally applied because of their scarcity. Now many of these elements are known to exist in considerable quantities, and the term "Lanthanide" is applied to this group of elements, because of their similarities to lanthanum, the first element in the group. Many authorities insist on including yttrium, element Number 39, because of its extremely close association with the members of the group in nature and because of its similarity in chemical properties. It has been estimated that the combined rare earth group makes up about five-thousandth. of one percent of the Earth's crust, a higher percent than the common elements, lead, tin, zinc, arsenic, mercury, silver and gold. Cerium is by far the most abundant member comprising about half of the total amount. Yttrium, neodymium, and lanthanum are next in order; samarium, gadolinium, praseodymium, dysprosium, erbium, holmium, and ytterbium are increasingly scarce; while the elements lutetium, thulium, terbium, and europium are extremely rare. The rare earths as a group are metals, usually trivalent, forming basic oxides, and insoluble oxalates in dilute mineral acids. Their fluorides are also difficultly soluble; hence the rare earths or lanthanides may be separated, in general, from other elements by adding oxalic or hydrofluoric acid to a dilute mineral acid solution containing them. The most striking fact which characterizes these elements is the remarkable .similarity in both the physical and chemical properties of their compounds. Their main differences are in the solubilities of their salts and the basicity of their oxides, which vary between that of the alkaline earths and that of aluminum.

Four parameters of the Drais stirred ball mitt, i.e., bead load, bead size, flow rate and top feed size have been studied regarding their influence on the specific surface area. A factorially designed scheme was employed for conducting 27 mitting tests. The results show that the bead toad is the most important parameter in terms of increasing the specific surface area with less energy consumption. The bead size is also important. The optimum ratio of bead size to top feed size is found to be 14 to 80, which is much wider than in bat2 milling. The variations in flow rate and top feed size appear to influence the process insignificantly.

Much of the process control effort in the mineral industry uses proportional-integral-derivative controllers that require periodic retuning. Retuning hundreds of controllers typically employed in a single plant is a formidable task for the control engineer. Adaptive controllers offer an alternative to this problem, since they are designed to tune themselves. Four schemes of adaptive control-gain scheduling, model reference adaptive control, self-tuning regulator, and optimal adaptive controllers-are discussed with process examples. The control of a ball mill circuit with a multivariable self-tuning regulator is illustrated. This controller encompasses the advantages of the other three controllers and is applicable for a wide range of process variability.

Rising living standards and new demands for energy require increased mineral extraction, whereas the "new environmentalism" and concern over social well-being warn of the dangers to both the environment and the social system. This dilemma can only be solved by a complete understanding and analysis of all the factors relevant to human welfare which include environmental considerations, economic implications, and the social and psychological dimensions. A decision-making framework is therefore necessary which will encompass all relevant views of the problem.

The friction factor is one of the more difficult parameters to determine in ventilation planning. In practice, this can be estimated from published factors such as those of McElroy. The problem with this approach is that the selection requires some judgement, and the estimated values offer no more than guideline accuracy. This study, examines the effects of four factors on the coefficient of friction for a simulated mine airway. The factors are: airway cross-section, asperity height, flow direction, and cross-cut spacing. The study includes the modeling of a mine airway and the evaluation of the results from 13 experiments on flows of air over rough surfaces. The model, physically represented by a wind tunnel, includes a rough surface section which can be modified to simulate mine airways of various shape and asperity height. Most of the experiments were performed under controlled flow conditions during which the Reynolds number was varied between 50,000 and 300,0000. Based on this study, the friction factor for a mine opening was found to depend not only on the size and shape of the surface asperities but is also affected by the orientation of them in relation to the flow direction.

The activities of Outokumpu Oy in the mining industry span all branches from prospecting to the production of refined metals and the manufacture of semifinished products. Products include copper, zinc, mercury, cadmium, nickel, cobalt, sulfur, gold, silver, iron ore, stainless steel, selenium, ferrochromium, lead and chromium concentrates, as well as chromite foundry sand. In addition, the activities of Outokumpu Oy extend to development and production of instruments, planning of industrial projects and instrumentation as well as the manufacture of specialized machines for ore concentration. The company now operates ten mines, eight of which are underground and all of which are in sulfide deposits except one. The fully automated monitoring and control of underground mine ventilation at the Pyhasalmi mine are an important technological contribution to the industry. Development work on the ventilation control was started in 1969, and since May 1973 it has operated in a fully automated computer-controlled mode. The Pyhasalmi mine has been in production since 1962, having begun as an open-pit operation. Development of underground mining began in 1967. The present annual production is one million tons all from underground mining. The underground mine is equipped with a main shaft and an auxiliary shaft, and two raises for ventilation. There is also a rampway from the surface to a depth of 500 m. The main shaft is for ore hoisting and the auxiliary shaft is used for waste-rock hoisting and for downcast ventilation. One of the raises is for downcast ventilation and the other is for upcast ventilation. The mining methods employed at Pyhasalmi are sublevel stoping with backfill, sublevel caving, and sublevel shrinkage stoping. Copper and zinc concentrates are produced. The Pyhasalmi mine is highly mechanized with about 4000 installed diesel horsepower underground. The maximum capacity of fresh air is 150 m3/s.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

To address the problem of grade estimation in a general three-dimensional shape and the uncertainty associated with the estimate, the technique of jackknifing/ block-kriging shortcut is proposed. A new estimator called jackknife kriging is introduced first. Through the jackknife variance, a confidence limit for the reserve-grade estimate can be calculated. Unlike the kriging variance, which is more a measure of data configuration and which is independent of data values, the jackknife variance reflects the true variability of the data. This approach provides a simple way to set a confidence level for global estimation of resources.

The Pokorny sulfur deposit is located in the northwest comer of the Delaware basin in the Rustler Springs sulfur district of west Texas. To date, 57 sulfur test wells have been drilled by Addwest Minerals delineating a resource of greater than one million long tons (It) of native sulfur. The deposit, hosted by the Permian Ochoan Castile Formation evaporite sequence, is a sulfur-bearing bioepigenetic limestone replacement of banded bituminous anhydrite. Three distinct mineralized horizons are present that correlate with zones of halite dissolution in the Castile. Sulfur mineralization occurs as hydrocarbon-poor disseminated grains, and as crystalline linings of discontinuous planar voids and large vugs.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of P.T. Freeport Indonesia, Co. is located in the Jayawijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, Indonesia approximately six km west northwest of Puncak Jaya, the highest point on the island of New Guinea. Disseminated mineralization is confined to the Grasberg intrusive complex, a multiphase intrusion of dioritic to monzonitic composition which intruded tightly folded carbonate rocks of the Tertiary Faumai and Ainod formations. The high tonnage and grade of the deposit (1 X 109 tonnes at 1.4 % copper and 1. 8 ppm gold) appear to result from a succession of coincident intrusive and mineralizing events about three million years ago. This paper will focus on the history and character of these events.

Dynamic experiments were performed in a continuous open-circuit 40x40-cm ball mill using a pseudo-random binary sequence of the feed rate and measuring the variations of the discharge particle-size distribution. The impulse response is calculated by a cross-correlation technique. Then a model involving a discrete transferfunction and a time-series stochastic equation is calibrated using maximum likelihood methods. Based on this empirical model, a minimum variance controller with constrained input is designed and its performances are compared, by simulation, to the performances of a conventional PID regulator.

"A booster fan is an underground mechanical ventilation equipment installed in series with a main surface fan that is used to boost the air pressure provided by the surface main fan passing through it. As mining continues to expand and go deeper, the need for improved and efficient ventilation increases. This has led to the use of booster fans and other auxiliary ventilation devices in underground mines. This paper details experiments and results carried out at Missouri S&T Experimental Mine that investigated air leakage and recirculation caused by the use of booster fans. The results were compared with the situations where booster fans are used and not used.The variables considered were the booster fan blade angle and the fan combinations. Air quantity measurements were taken at each individual stopping under a number of scenarios and across four blade angle settings. The first set of situations examined were; the main surface Joy fan only running, the main Joy, and the west booster fan running, and the main Joy fan and east booster fan running. Observations were made which lead to the conclusion from the experimental analysis that booster fans affect the behavior of leakage and recirculation. The locations of the booster fan and the blade angle setting have the most effect on leakage and recirculation. To limit the potential for system leakage and recirculation, the location and size of a booster fan in a ventilation system should be thoroughly evaluated.INTRODUCTION Missouri S&T Experimental Mine ventilation system The Missouri S&T Experimental Mine has two shafts. One currently serves as the main intake shaft. Air is forced through the main shaft by a Joy Manufacturing Vane Axial fan and follows the direction shown on the map on Figure 1. The air is currently naturally exhausted through the Wheeler portal. As indicated on the map there are eight stoppings in the mine, with stoppings number 2 and 8 fitted with man doors. The mine also consists of three raises which are either fully or partially blocked, two portals with one acting as an exhaust and the other generally closed by a hydraulic Kennedy door."

"INTRODUCTION Use of sensor technology applied to the gravimetric beneficiation is intended for the selective preconcentration or separation of various minerals. Sensor Based Sorting (SBS) uses sensors to identify the particles and separate them by a mechanical process (flap) or pneumatic ejection valves (Wotruba et al. 2014). The principle of the SBS technology to separate mineral particles consists of three phases which cover feed,detection and separation. (killmann, 2009 Apud nienhaus et al. 2014). The applicability of the technique in an early stage of beneficiation enables free particles and poor grade to be a part of the process. The mass of tailings to be processed can be removed at the initial stage to save energy, water and equipment maintenance (Wotruba et al. 2014). Lindner (2010) suggested that the use of SBS technology would only will be possible if there exsists an electromagnetic interaction in all the wave spectra interacting with the solid ore. The interaction of electromagnetic waves depends directly on the characteristics of the material. The material receives a spectrum of electromagnetic waves by irradiation and this results in a reduced wavelength with differing types radiation such as fluorescence, reflection, remission, absorption, transmission and transmission. The frequency of the wave spectrum varies between 1000 and 1020Hz, illustrated by the data in Figure 1, which shows that each type of sensor emits a wavelength inversely proportional to the frequency ranging from 10-11pm to 104km, and the frequency that varies between EHz 103 and 1020kHz. The difference between the electromagnetic spectrum variations can only be visible to the human eye at wavelengths with intervals between 380nm and 780nm (Wotruba et al. 2014). One of the main advantages of operating with imaging sensors is the versatility of the images which can take on zero, one, two or three dimensions shown below as a point, a line, an area or a spatial image, as illustrated in Figure 2. According to Schubert (1988), to separate a mineral particle it is necessary to follow the characteristics of mineralogy, physics and chemistry with or without use of water. The use of new technologies can help reduce operating costs and improve utilization of mineral resources."

The Bureau of Mines has developed a system for dewatering waste slurries by flocculating mineral particles with polyethylene oxide (PEO) and dewatering the resulting flocs on static and/or rotary screens. This paper discusses data obtained from dewatering, rheology, and ion-exchange experiments. A possible mechanism is postulated for the attachment of PEO to claylike particles through a water bridge with the intershell waters of the exchanged ion and the polymer.

1.1 GENERALIZED METHODS OF SUPPRESSING THE INFLOW OF GROUND WATER DURING THE CONSTRUCTION OF SHAFTS, DRIFTS AND TUNNELS Various methods are used to prevent or minimize the inflow of ground water into underground workings during their excavation. The two most common methods include freezing the saturated rock and grouting using cement, sodium silicate, polyurethane and/or other chemicals. Each of these technologies for combatting the inflow of ground water is effective only under specific hydrogeological conditions. For example, although the freezing of saturated ground is among the more universally adopted methods, it is designed to provide only temporary protection during construction. Before the saturated rock thaws it is necessary to emplace a waterproof liner which is labor intensive, time consuming, and expensive. Consequently, freezing is used only in exceptionally complex hydrogeological conditions, namely in those cases where the water-bearing strata consist of unstable rock or the ground water has an anomalous hydrochemistry. The classical grouting of saturated rock, carried out from the surface or from the face of the underground workings for the purpose of limiting the inflow of ground water during excavation, utilizes both cement and a variety of chemical grouts. Cement grouting has been regarded as the main method of combatting the inflow of ground water in fractured rock throughout the world. In such countries as the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Canada, the Republic of South Africa and Great Britain, cement grouting is the main method of reducing the inflow of ground water during the excavation of mine openings. In Great Britain and the FRG, cement grouting has been used in 80% of all shaft excavations. In the Republic of South Africa cement grouting has been used in almost 100% of all the shafts that have been constructed. The installation of grout curtains into permeable water- bearing strata significantly reduces their permeability and increases the rock strength. Grouting has the greatest effect in fractured sandstones, certain well indurated shales, fractured granites, fractured quartzites, and karstic limestones or dolomites. The following principal factors must be considered when assessing the expediency of grouting rock with cement: the geometry of the network of fracture openings, the saturated hydraulic conductivity of the fractured rock, the hydraulic head acting on the water in the rock, and the chemical composition of the ground water. On the basis of the geometry of the fractures and the thickness of each hydrostratigraphic unit, the characteristics of the cement grout are selected. As a rule, the cementing of large fractured zones with high ground water velocities is carried out using inert fillers (sand, mill slag, loam, loess, crushed limestone), special types of cement, setting accelerators, and high cement concentrations in water. Calcium chloride, soda ash, sodium silicate, sodium nitrate, amino alcohols, tin bichloride, trisulphate nitrate, and lumnite are used extensively as the setting accelerators for cement grouts. In the FRG and Poland, special cement injection compounds that embody a mixture of cement and active cement metal salts, water additives and binding substances are being used for the cementing of saturated zones with rapid ground water velocities. These reagents accelerate the rate of structure-forming reactions. In spite of the wide variety of additives used for cement grouts, the effectiveness of the method in large fractures below the water table is either poor or it leads to a very large consumption of cement due to the erosion of the grout through the cracks before it hardens. At the present time, a large number of cement types and brands are being produced by various countries. These variations permit cementing to be employed in a variety of geological conditions. However, both pure cement grout and grouts with fillers constitute unstable systems with a high water loss rate. Therefore during the grouting of finely fractured rock the cement grout's premature loss of a large amount of free water causes its consistency to increase, whereupon the grout solidifies. Consequently, it inadequately penetrates into the fine fractures of the stratum. In addition the high water loss rate in the cement grout causes unreacted cement particles to remain, which greatly reduces the grout hardness and the resulting rock strength characteristics are weakened. As a result, the binding properties of the cement are utilized perhaps up to 60%. The remaining portion is left in the grout as a filler. All these conditions significantly decrease the efficiency of the isolation effort both with respect to strength and cost. In order to expand the cement grouting method, re- search is being conducted to improve the quality of cement grout, to increase its range of application with respect to permeability control, to reduce its water loss rate and to increase its capacity to withstand the erosive and corrosive effects of poor quality ground water. "Mining has always played a key role in the improvement of the quality of life, but also, it has been a source of environmental and social conflict. Despite the great progress in social responsibility and sustainability experienced in recent decades, the public image of mining remains low and mining projects and operations must face growing difficulties and demands, which results in increasing capital and operating costs. In practice, the objective of a mining company is to create value for its shareholders and therefore, the best approach to Sustainability would be to foster those drivers aligning sustainability and shareholders value, this is, the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). Only under this assumption, convergence of corporate strategy and sustainability may be assured. This paper discusses partial results of a Research Project being carried out at the Catholic University of Chile, aiming to develop a social and economic model for the effective integration of the values of sustainable development in the strategy of mining companies and their stakeholders. INTRODUCTION Mining is fundamental for the wellbeing of our everyday life. But as important as these benefits are for humanity, the mining Industry has had negative environmental and social impacts. For these reasons, a closer relationship between “Sustainable Development and Mining” is more necessary than ever. The Brundtland definition of Sustainable development does not have a clear relationship with mining, but it provides the context. Under a strict interpretation of the Bruntlandt definition, stating that “Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” [10], mining would not be sustainable because the minerals are non-renewable resources. However, this research focuses on how mining can contribute to the sustainable development in the territories where the projects take place. In other words, this research follows the publication titled “Berlin II Guidelines for Mining and Sustainable Development” [9], which stated that “A mining project that is developed, operated and closed in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner could contribute to sustainable development. Critical to this goal is ensuring that benefits of the project are employed to develop the region in a way that will survive long after the mine is closed”. The potential conflicts between mining stakeholders arises from the interpretation of the concept “developing, operating and closing a project in an environmentally and socially acceptable manner”, and the impact on the economic objectives of mining companies. Nevertheless, the ability of mining companies to control new demands and expectations of stakeholders has threatened the implementation and continuity of their projects and operations. To deal with these issues this research analyses the “Business Case for Sustainability” (BCS). It refers to the process leading to a business and social-economic environment whereby shareholders value may only be optimum under a business strategy which fully integrates the values of sustainability. In the model proposed, the Business Case will start when the benefits are higher than the costs. Benefits not only associated with efficient use of resources, also benefits associated with avoiding difficulties to continue with the mining projects such as strikes, heavy penalties, loss of investment, and so on."

Data from triaxial compression tests per- formed at confining pressures between 0 and 100 MPa are used to evaluate parameters in a contitutive model that is based on microcracking. The tensorial formulation is reduced to equations that are specific to the simple Loading imposed in triaxial compression tests. Procedures for evaluating the model parameters are described, dependence of parameter values on confining pressure is discussed, and prediction of failure is assessed.

The Macassa Mine is a mature mine with a 61 year history of continuous production. The majority of past production has been derived from a zone called the '04 Break (Main Break). Recent underground mine exploration has been successful in locating several neighbouring ninera1ized zones. This paper will characterize the spatial location, geometry and mineralogical properties of these secondary zones. Future plans for underground mine exploration to follow-up on these target zones will be outlined.

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is currently being mined in the world's largest open pit gold mine with production believed to be of the order of two million ounces per annum. The open pit measures about 3.5 by 2.5 km and extends to a depth of 350m. The gold ore resource in the Muruntau deposit, including production, is about 170 million ounces of gold (Anonymous, 1996). This paper presents a summary of the deposit geology and its regional geological setting. Information used in this paper has been generated from observations made on two visits to the mine and its environs, and a review of the Russian-and English-language literature.
