Explosions of methane in coal silos and coal ships is an ever present hazard. Recent investigations have shown beyond question that considerable accumulations of methane do occur in coal storage silos and numerous recent explosions in coal transport shipping strongly indicates that the same conditions also exist in ship storage holds. Investigations have shown that the main concentrations of methane occur within the actual coal pile. Within this region normal silo and ship ventilation systems are ineffective. The main 1ine of defence is therefore to exclude potential sources of ignition or to place the coal in an inert atmosphere, or both. This paper presents the results of a methane survey of all operating silos in Western Canada. These results demonstrate that a serious and widespread hazard of explosion exists. This paper also discusses various methods by which this hazard may be reduced including methods of venti1ation, inertization, microbiological control and early warning systems.

One advantage of kriging is that it provides both an estimate of the block or point grade, and an indication of the local precision via the kriging variance. If one assumes that the estimation errors are normally distributed, then confidence intervals for the grades can be calculated. But in mining, grades are rarely normally distributed; in general, they are skew. This is particularly true for precious metals. In this paper we study confidence intervals for variables with non-normal distributions. Using a non linear geostatistical technique, the grades are transformed into their normally distributed equivalents. Confidence intervals are obtained for these normal variables, and back transformed to give the corresponding confidence intervals for the grades, for either points or blocks. This approach is applied to gold data from the Witwatersrand basin in South Africa.

As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer and winter of 1975 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses and to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired. This paper describes the simulation methodology employed and presents the results of a computer study of the secondary crushing plant (1).

By-products are of greater importance in lead and zinc mining than in any of the other major base metals. While I think most mining people would accept that statement, you would probably get some widely varying estimates when attempting to quantify the value of by-products in lead and zinc mining. We are now able to do this with our lead-zinc mine cost model. This model was originally developed as a zinc mine cost model to help us forecast long-term zinc supply and price as part of a study we completed in late 1979 entitled "Zinc - The Next Decade". Before demonstrating the importance of by-product revenue to lead- zinc mines, let me first explain how the cost model was constructed. I will discuss the model as it was originally constructed - as a zinc mine cost model. It has subsequently been expanded to include lead only mines and now can Be run either as a zinc or a lead mine cost model.

The Elkhorn mining district is located 35 kilometers southeast of Helena, Montana, on the southeast edge of the Boulder Batholith. Geologically the district consists of a folded sequence of Paleozoic limestones and shales which have been thermally metamorphosed and altered by monzonite to diorite intrusives related to the Cretaceous Boulder Batholith. For the most part, the skarns are associated with metasomatic: replacement of calc-silicate hornfels, diorite and marble by iron rich, dark green pyroxene, garnet, sulfides, the district contains excess of 30,000 Kg.

Recent research by the investigators has evaluated the oxidation roasting of refractory gold concentrates in the presence of hydrated lime. (Taylor, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993). These results have indicated that it may be possible to roast concentrates in such a way as to contain nearly all of the sulfur and arsenic in the roaster calcine and that cyanidation may be possible. To further evaluate the behavior of this type of roasting system a laboratory cyclone reactor was built and operated using pyrite and hydrated lime as a .model system. Approximately 50 years ago, the principle of cyclone firing entered practical boiler construction. The appeal of the cyclone configuration was that it afforded the flash combustion process greater efficiency due to turbulence-induced increased mass transfer, heat exchange, and combustion rates.

MINERALS INFORMATION PROGRAM Mineral data collection by the Federal Government actually began in 1882 with an appropriation by Congress to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although the Bureau of Mines was instituted in 1910, it was not until 1924 that the collection, interpretation, and dissemination of worldwide information on production, consumption, and availability of minerals became the responsibility of the Bureau. The objective of the Bureau's minerals information program is to maintain and provide reliable, timely, and comprehensive data for analysis of national minerals problems. This program is implemented by a staff of specialists who cover about 100 mineral commodities and the mineral industries of 168 countries. Data are also provided on the minerals industry on the State and county level. The specialists analyze information to identify trends and problems, forecast future U.S. and world supply and demand for the nonfuel minerals, and relate trends and developments to their impact on the domestic minerals industry. Data Sources and Publications The primary sources of data concerning the domestic minerals industry are the companies that produce, use, and trade in these minerals. Approximately 60,000 survey forms are sent to industry, on a monthly, quarterly, semiannual, or annual basis, to obtain the data. Domestic trade data are provided by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce. Information on mineral developments abroad is developed by Bureau specialists from mineral reports supplied by U.S. embassies worldwide, from primary source documents, from a review of the technical mining literature, and from onsite mine and plant visits in foreign countries. The information is disseminated through a number of Bureau publications: "Mineral Industry Surveys" provide aggregated data on a monthly. quarterly, or semiannual basis to give timely information on the most important mineral commodities. "Mineral Commodity Summaries," published each January, provides preliminary annual data on supply and demand and discusses significant events of the previous year. The final data are published later in the "Minerals Yearbook," which is the definitive historical record for mineral statistics. "Mineral Facts and Problems," an encyclopedic work issued every 5 years, covers industry structure, technology, supply-demand analysis. economic factors, reserves, and forecasts of U.S. and world demand for individual commodities. "Mineral Perspectives" and "Mineral Issues" cover important international mineral developments and significant issues of current U.S. policy as they relate to minerals. Discussions and analyses of mineral trends and developments also appear in other Bureau publications, such as "Minerals and Materials" and "Information Circulars." These publications provide the basis for analysis and policy determinations by the Bureau and by virtually every Federal agency concerned with minerals, defense issues, the national economy, and foreign relations. The data are also used by industry in planning capital investments in mines and processing plants, by financial analysts, by U.S. delegations in their work with international commodity groups, and by a host of other minerals related organizations. Data Bases The data bases used by the specialists for preparing publications or in response to a continuous stream of inquiries include both those that contain individual commodity data from respondents, and those that are summary data bases on production, trade, capacity, employment and a number of other minerals-related items, not all of which are derived from data reported to the Bureau of Mines. The data bases maintained on the mainframes are not accessible by non- Bureau users. In the Mining Industry, the means of handling and transferring lubricants has been given little attention over the years. An analysis of this process indicates that this neglect has often exacted a very high price. As the costs associated with labor, equipment utilization and waste disposal soar, the need for an efficient system takes on an increasing significance. Often the focus of bulk systems has been placed on the master container itself. Certainly, there is nothing new about a large lubricant container; they have been available over a period of years, known under a variety of names, "mini tank", "super drum", ?flo-bin" and "tote bin", to name but a few.

Improvements which have been made in commericial flotation systems during the past fifty years have resulted more from trial and error methods in the mill than from research in the laboratory. Research has often provided explanations of why mill changes have improved the metallurgical process. Hopefully, in the next fifty years, changes in mill flowsheets will come about, primarily, as a result of research work. However, since minerals, in their infinite variety, cannot be reduced to a standard state, research on commercial ores will have only a local utility, and research on pure minerals will have little commercial application. What will emerge from research on pure systems are mechanisms of adsorption, and this in turn may throw some light on the very much more complex adsorption processes taking place in the pulps of commercial ores. Quartz, without a doubt, has been the subject of more research effort than any other mineral, but we are still a long way from completely understanding its behavior in flo¬tation. Hematite and calcite have received considerably less attention. Ores containing a mixture of all three minerals, however, are commercially important, and the iron deposits in Alabama have been extensively studied by the United States Bureau of Mines (1). The literature reveals no reports of research on synthetic mixtures of all three.

Deep open-pit mines invariably affect the local and regional hydrologic systems. Pit dewatering, occurring during mining operations, puts an obvious hydrologic stress on these hydrologic systems. However, post-mining hydro-logic impacts resulting from the pit refilling with ground water following the cessation of mining activity can also be significant. Prediction of the rate at which the post-mining pit will fill with ground water is a critical aspect of assessing such long-term hydrologic impacts. Numerical ground-water flow modeling prov1des a method that can be used to predict the rate at which pits will fill with ground water.

The material composition of product is defined as the quantity of metal used per unit of product manufactured during a year. The material composition of product has shown steady and persistent declines over time for most metals and materials. This tendency demonstrates the continued improvements in manufacturing technology resulting from substitutions of other materials and increases in production efficiency. The purpose of this paper is to use the material composition of product to show the impact of advanced materials on the use of traditional metals.

The San Luis deposit of Costilla County, Colorado contains 11,021,000 tonnes (12,149,000 tons) of ore at 1.4 g/t (0.040 oz/st) gold in two mineable zones. Gold mineralization is associated with silicification and quartz-sericite-pyrite alteration localized in breccias along a low-angle "detachment" fault zone in Precambrian gneiss. Gangue minerals include chlorite, specularite, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, and fluorite. Mineralization is mid-Tertiary in age and may have an indirect genetic relation to the emplacement of felsic intrusions. Portions of the ore body are unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Tertiary Santa Fe Formation. The deposit formed during the early stages of extensional tectonism along the eastern edge of the present day Rio Grande rift.

The main potash deposit at Taquari-Vassouras is contained in cycle VII, and consists of several sylvinite bodies. Cycle VII belongs to a sequence of nine cycles defined by Szatmari (1974) in the Sergipe-Alagoas basin. The sylvinite layers are separated by halite beds. They are seated on or may be laterally in discordant contact with other lithologies such as the tachyhydrites at the base, and the limestone breccia at the top. The main structural features in the deposit include numerous synclines and anticlines, salt dissolution phenomena, and open fractures associated with the axes of the anticlines.

Any geostatistical study involves (implicit) hypotheses about 1. The distribution function 2. The drift of the data 3. The (underlying) variogram Once these are known, most other results follow from geostatistical theory. However, to date, there have been few theoretical studies on testing these implicit hypotheses. Most of the published studies in this area have dealt with the fluctuation of the variogram or the sampling distribution of the variogram (Journel and Huijbregts, 1978; Davis and Borgman, 1979). Questions regarding these hypotheses regarding a given deposit arise often. Coal geologists often infer channels and washouts on the basis of thicknesses data. Zoning is recognized in a variety of metal deposits. A test as to whether these inferences are valid on just chance occurrences would have widespread application. .It is standard geostatistical practice to "eyeball" fit variograms. In the early exploration phase when just a few pairs are available, the variogram often displays wide fluctuations and there may be considerable doubt about which variogram model to use.

In conjunction with its 1993 Annual Meeting, held Feb. 15-18 in Reno, NV, SME sponsored a symposium, "Conveyor Belt Engineering for the Coal and Mineral Mining Industries." Eighteen papers were presented, grouped into four sessions: Low Tension Drives, High Tension Drives. Novel Techniques and Specifications. Three of the papers have been republished in this issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Brief summaries of the other 15 papers are presented here. Forecasts indicate that the acid rain bill currently before Congress is likely to cause an increase in demand of 30 to 40 million tons per year of compliance quality coal from Central Appalachia. This represents a doubling of this segment of the coal business. This paper will examine how this doubling can be met, what the likely implications for pricing are, the major uncertainties associated with these predictions, and the likely outcomes of the growth in compliance coal. Finally, some implications for fuel planners will be discussed.

The Richmond Hill Mine has recently completed a reclamation plan to mitigate Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) which was identified at the toe of the former waste rock pile in 1992. Reclamation activities began in 1994 with the removal of ARD material from the waste rock pile and placement of this material in the former pit. This material was then isolated from the near surface environment by a low permeability capping system designed to minimize water and oxygen flow into the material. The capping system consists of, from bottom to top, six inches of limestone, 18 inches of low permeability clay liner, 4 and one-half feet of thermal barrier/drain layer, and six inches of topsoil. This capping system was completed in 1995. An extensive program is in place to monitor the effectiveness of the reclamation plan, and includes measurements on moisture content movement, temperature, oxygen content, and groundwater impacts. Monitoring has been ongoing since the completion of reclamation. This monitoring plan is demonstrating the success in isolating the material from the near surface environment and minimizing the impacts to the surrounding environment.

Sampling is used in all scientific, engineering, marketing, and financial disciplines. The scientific theory of probabilistic sampling is a well established field, providing a general framework for basic methods that can be applied in fields that would appear to have little in common. The revolution in sampling occurred, in part, as a response to the need for quality control in industry during the Second World War. Since this time probabilistic sampling methods have been replacing pre-scientific non-probabilistic methods of sampling. This has not been the case, however, in the mineral industries in the United States. No general agreement on a theory applicable to all sorts of particulate materials has been reached. As a result, non-probabilistic methods are still widely used and the measurement of sampling precision - the hallmark of scientific sampling - is unknown. Much of the research on particulate material sampling that has been carried out over the last 40 years can be characterized by a lack of theoretical reasoning and rigor, an unwillingness to acknowledge previous work, and a lack of integration with existing, established scientific sampling theory. Non-standard statistical terminology is used and often standard statistical terms are misused. The confusion that has resulted is reflected in ASTM and IS0 sampling standards and in the practice of particulate material sampling.

"""Operational excellence"" provides a sound foundation for RWE Power AG's three strategic pillars (innovation, expansion and organic growth). The maintenance and development of operational excellence in lignite mining operations at RWE Power is supported by the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) ""immer:besser"" (getting better). Obtaining cost reductions with the aid of the CIP as a kind of value-adding self-renewal process to ensure competitive lignite mining operations and lignite-based electricity generation forms the basis for further increases in profitability and growth. Since the beginning of the 1990s, RWE Power has carried out a multitude of re-engineering projects focusing on the efficient shaping of processes with the assistance of external consultants to enable the Company to cope with the considerable need for change by swiftly implementing major efficiency levers. These also include the required adaptation and development of the organization. Since 2004, the Continuous Opencast Mine Improvement Process (""KVT"") has enabled the mines to tap significant cost reduction potential by virtue of their own strength. But there is another issue that has come into focus: the development of performance enhancement options. In 2006, the ""KVT"" process, piloted in the opencast mines, was included in the RWE Power-wide immer:besser (i:b) programme (Figure 1)."

The effects of additives, sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, sodium oleate, oleic acid and polyacrylic acid, on stirred media milling of limestone have been investigated. The results are evaluated in terms of specific surface area, specific energy and energy efficiency as a function of additive dosage, polymer molecular weight, solids concentration and relevant operating variables. Use of additives generally results in changes in specific surface area and energy efficiency, while under certain conditions a more than 100% increase in these parameters can occur. Relevant interfacial properties have been measured and milling mechanisms involved are explored particularly in terms of the effect of additives on the flow patterns at higher solids concentration.
