To address and mitigate discharges from combined sewer overflows in the Providence, Rhode Island area, the Narragansett Bay Commission completed a comprehensive Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Facilities Plan in 1993 which included a series of deep rock tunnels. Since completion of preliminary design of the program in 1994, the program has been reconfigured in response to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) new CSO policy. The currently proposed system consists of a deep rock tunnel with two tunnel stubs which will provide230,000 cu m (62 million gallons) of storage at depths of up to 90 m (300 ft). This paper discusses the revised 5 km (3 mile) long deep tunnel system.

Nitric acid has long been known as an effective oxidant. Nitric acid leaching is characterised by highly favourable kinetics. Process development was impeded due to the corrosive nature of the process, limited knowledge of acid recycle and complex reactions which are still not fully understood. In 1981, Arseno Processing Ltd (APL), began development of the so-called Arseno process. The technology targeted nitric acid oxidation of refractory gold ores and concentrates whose refractoriness was due to the presence of sulphide minerals. APL lodged patents in United States, Australia, Canada and several other countries covering the basic chemistry, the overall process, and reactor design. The name Arseno led to the misunderstanding that the process was only applicable to arsenic-bearing material. The name was therefore changed to the Redox process in 1988. Having played an important role in the development of Redox from 1986, SASOX recognised the great potential of the process and purchased the process in 1990. SASOX owns all the patents and other Redox proprietary know-how, licensing agreements in force, and is committed to the ongoing development and commercialisation of the Redox technology. Minproc has been granted specific marketing and engineering rights to the Redox pro_cess.

Exploration The technology of underground construction and particularly of tunneling, both now and in the future, starts with knowledge of the properties of the medium surrounding the tunnel. Although we are trying to develop machines that can excavate tunnels independently of the properties of the medium, and although we may achieve some success in this direction, we seem always to be brought up short by a paradox: With increasing sophistication of machines and with increasing complexity of construction jobs, our methods are likely to become more sensitive rather than less sensitive to changes in the medium. I suspect that the need for more precise knowledge of subsurface conditions in advance of construction will increase rather than decrease as time goes by. In the recent anniversary issue of Engineering News Record, Probing the Future, Senior Editor Bill Jacobus prophesies highly sophisticated devices to probe the unknowns of the earth's soil and rock materials. He envisions that "drill holes to obtain borings will give way to rock-melting coring devices". He may be right; it is hard to argue the accuracy of predictions of the future. INTRODUCTION The art of raise boring has seen rapid development and use in underground mines both for primary development and production during the past 10 years. The intensive full scale tests by a major mining company in the Precambrian rocks of the Sudbury district of Ontario, Canada, have lead the way to the general acceptance of the raise drills. The rock successfully raise bored in the Sudbury area has compressive strengths varying from 30,000 to 50,000 p.s.i. As a result of the intensive study, it became evident to many mining companies that raise boring could be adapted to many mining systems. Many companies have modified their planned mining methods to incorporate raise boring. The result has been a more rapid development of their mine and naturally, an economic advantage to them. In conjunction with the acceptance of the raise drills, the range of equipment has broadened in terms of size, capability and efficiency. The mining industry’s image is molded by what the public knows, or thinks it knows about mining. As Caterpillar prepared for the production of its educational video, Common Ground, the public’s perceptions about mining needed to be established. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As those perceptions were analyzed, we were able to narrow the video’s focus to relevant, realistic approaches. We found out what people did not know about mining. And, most importantly, facts they should know were singled out - facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in the final direction of the Common Ground project. What the public believes As these perceptions about mining were researched, it was found that the beliefs of the general public are dominated by four concepts. Quotations from interviewees are included with the discussion of each of these concepts. Figure 1 shows an overview of people’s beliefs before education.

PPC (Public Power Corporation) operates a new power plant at the South-West part of Crete. Recently the extension of the Power Plant started. ATHENA SA the main contractor of the project assigned to EXORIXI SA the implementation of a blast vibration monitoring program and prevention-evaluation of risks caused by construction blastings inside or very close to the operating part of the power station. Their advantages have led to use in both batch and continuous applications. The role of copper sulphate in the flotation of pyrite has been studied. A survey of a number of pyrite flotation plants using copper sulphate showed that in correct dosages, it was able to increase both grades and recoveries. This was confirmed in batch tests. Copper sulphate had no significant effect on the rate of adsorption of PNBX onto pyrite. Copper adsorbed irreversibly onto the pyrite when the latter was slurried in a copper sulphate solution. Copper sulphate had a significant effect on the maximum froth height obtained in static three-phase froth tests. Proposals to explain these observations are made.

Experimental results obtained on the recovery of below 0.5 x 10-3m coal fines by flotation employing geometrically similar columns of 0.056m, 0.080m, 0.100m and 0.220m diameter have been presented. The hydrodynamics of such a unit as well as its performance have been related to operating parameters to establish optimum conditions. The results have further been analysed critically in the light of the known relationship on the behaviour of similar systems to assign reasons for the critical factors established in a bid to reduce the empiricism required to be followed in the scale up of such a unit.

Salinity in Effluents carries a high penalty as a result of toxic­ity, corrosion, limited re-use potential, scaling and environmental impact. Although the high TDS, such as Calcium sulfate, other than metals are still being dealt with a low key non issue basis, they are receiving more and more attention from regulators. Traditional solutions to solve these problems are costly and inefficient and create therefore severe constraints on the prof­itability of mining operations and out-price in general the finan­cial resources for environmental clean up operations. Going up the technology versus cost curve the most econom­ic solution to pollution is dilution but which is difficult in a coun­t1y shoti of water. If this can't be done, the second best, at least in sunny areas, is, to pump the whole effluent on a tailings dam for evaporation. Depending on the contaminants, one may have to pond the efflu­ent to avoid re-dissolution and seepage into the ground. The next most common solution to pollution is the addition of lime to remove and concentrate any dissolved metals and then dump the product, hidden in a mass of gypsum in a convenient place. Again ponding may be required to avoid ground pollution. However the treatment costs start to rise steeply if it is not allowed to discharge the limed overflow solution because of its high calcium sulphate content. Further treatment is then required in the form of high cost and high tech membrane process tech­nology such as reverse osmosis or dialysis or even mechanical driven evaporation.

The modern era of mineral exploration in Panama began in the late 1960's, resulting in porphyry copper discoveries at Petaquilla, Rio Pito, and Cerro Colorado. In contrast, Panama's early mining history (1503 to the early 1700's) was associated with gold. A single mine, Cana, in Darien Province, produced more than one Million ounces of gold in the colonial period. Except for episodic exploration activity by British and French interests, Panama's gold potential since the 1700's has been largely ignored.

This paper reports on an ongoing exploratory research program which aims to develop an understanding of the relationships between mining companies and their stakeholders and the importance of corporate citizenship policies to reputation and hence to corporate sustainability. The findings of the first stages of this research, the results of a focus group and an expert opinion survey into the drivers of reputation for mining companies are reported. This study was undertaken to provide an understanding of the drivers of reputation for a number of stakeholder groups and the perceptions held by mining companies of these drivers for their stakeholder groups. Results indicate that drivers vary between stakeholder groups - that in the case of drivers common to a number of stakeholder groups they may vary in their importance across the groups, and that there may exist a divergence between industry?s perception and stake-holders? priorities. These results further the understanding of the relationship between corporate citizenship and reputation in the mining industry, thus assisting companies to strategically manage their corporate citizenship investments and assisting them in their transition to sustainable development.

Commercial operations at the open pit, heap leach Crofoot Mine commenced in April, 1988. Approximately 13,600 tonnes (15,000 st) of low grade pregnant solution are treated daily using a Merrill-Crowe circuit. Acceptable gold recoveries from these low grade solutions can be obtained by optimizing solution pre-treatment prior to zinc addition.

Motivated by recent EU legislation already entered into force or in preparation, this article aims at offering glimpses of the future landscape in the area of subsurface protection against contamination from point sources. Towards this end, it discusses the most salient parts of legislation for the protection of water resources. It then presents results from the wide consultation rounds organized by the European Commission in order to both receive input and help make all opinions heard on the issue of soil protection. Finally, it introduces key provisions of the recent legislation on environmental liability. From the above pieces of legislation, this paper highlights the elements that concern specifically the protection of the subsurface against spills of hazardous wastes from point sources and the requirements for subsurface restoration.

Simple observations and tests during drilling exploration can provide useful data on probable water conditions. As the prospect becomes more serious, more detailed investigation of ground water and dewatering needs may be warranted. Ignoring ground-water conditions can lead to costly mistakes.

The DART NC-1B Tunnel Project consists of two 5,100 m TBM excavated tunnels, a principal underground station, a partially completed future station, a surface station, and eight associated ventilation shafts and exit tunnels. The recovery of gold from a high grade telluride/sulphide flotation concentrate was investigated. Conventional cyanidation resulted in very slow rates of gold extraction. Historically, the refractory nature of tellurides has been overcome by fine grinding, the use of excess lime and long leach times. In some instances, pre­oxidation of the tellurides has also been necessary, to render the gold soluble in cyanide solutions. The former conditions did improve the rate of gold extraction from the present sample, but final recovery was still unacceptable. Chemical oxidation of the tellurides and leaching with oxygen improved gold recovery further. However, it was found that simple modifications to the cyanidation conditions overcame the detrimental effects of the complex chemistry involved in leaching a telluride concentrate. The incorporation of a solution change, or the application of a carbon-in-leach procedure increased the recovery of gold to over 97 percent in 96 hours. In every case, leaching was enhanced by the addition of lead salts.
