Good afternoon, fellow members of the international mining community. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in this special three-day, international gathering, and to join with you in honoring one of my very good friends, Doug Fuerstenau. It couldn't be more fitting to have this kind of event to mark Doug's 60th birthday. You know, in addition to his faculty position at the University of California in Berkeley, Doug is a member of the Board of Directors of our Homestake Mining Company. So it is a double pleasure for me to help pay tribute to one of the outstanding academicians of the mining industry as well as a man with whom I work closely in running Homestake. I have been asked to talk about "The Future of Precious Metals," but I will concentrate my remarks on gold. Since the theme of this Symposium is "Challenges in Mineral Processing," what I'm going to talk about is a challenge that relates especially to a major problem faced by those of us who process ores to recover gold. I noted that in the Scope of this Symposium, it stated: "the mineral industry is currently facing many challenges to improve the economics, operating efficiencies and environmental concerns of the mineral processing system." I couldn't agree more with that statement. I think that a need exists for us to address this situation as it involves gold. And who better to consider this than the worldwide leaders of mineral processing research here assembled. I start with the premise that we need a new method for cyanide use or a chemical to replace sodium cyanide entirely. An industrial mineral, says the Glossary of Geology, is "any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metallic ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones; one of the nonmetallics." Probably most geologists and engineers would accept this simple and straightforward definition, at least as a general statement. On analysis, however, certain anomalies crop up. For example, what is metallic and what is nonmetallic? Bauxite and ilmenite certainly qualify as metallic ores, but both are also raw materials of important nonmetallic substances; hence they are included in this book. Another anomaly is that, by common consent, the term industrial minerals may include not only rocks and minerals but also certain manufactured products, such as cement and lime, and even mixed groups of natural and artificial products, such as abrasives and refractories. Thus the central realm of the industrial minerals is clear enough, but its boundaries tend to be indefinable. Since a definition that allowed for every irregularity in the outer fringes would be excessively unwieldy, the one quoted above may be considered satisfactory. The expression industrial minerals is commonly equated with nonmetallics, and with the somewhat more precise phrase industrial minerals and rocks as in the title of this book.

Many methods of evaluating the efficiency of mineral separations have been described in the literature. In most cases, these present the efficiency as a single number. This paper argues that single-number measures of efficiency are inadequate because they seldom allow reliable comparisons, and are unlikely to correspond to the optimum operating conditions. To realistically make comparisons, it is necessary to distinguish the particle-induced component from the equipment- induced component. In a number of situations where the separating property can be identified (such as in gravity concentration and classification), this can often be done. However, in more complicated systems, such as flotation, this has not been possible. A technique is described whereby particle and equipment contributions to efficiency can be distinguished without the need to define the separation property. Because smelter schedules define a boundary correlation between grade and recovery, they generate some of the better single¬-number measures of efficiency, but even these have limitations.

Dredging can be traced to early times where it may have been derived by the Phoenicians prior to the 4th century B.C. The first tangible design drawings of a bucket ladder (BL) dredge can be found in the collections of Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), which he produced when he was attempting to create better methods of channel and port dredging. The perfection of the system did not commence until after the invention of the steam engine in the early 1800's; providing the impetus to progress from man-powered mud mills, horse drawn along polders or dikes in the Netherlands, England, France and Germany, to steam-driven. In the 1860's following the various gold rushes in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Siberia and South America, with placers in particular, efforts were begun to apply mechanization to achieve deeper digging. There is a recording of a dredge being installed to mine gold in Montana in the 1860's but did not include a processing system. Then in the 1880's in New Zealand, some practical engineers developed a system that is said to be the first bucket ladder mining (BL/M) dredge for mining gold placers. In studies of the New Zealand gold dredging experience, it is estimated that some 500 dredges were built to mine gold between the 1880's and 1942. The high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) is a relatively new technology which offers the potential benefits in energy savings, circuit simplicity and improved product characteristics in minerals processing applications. Over 300 machines are now operating world-wide, but most of these are used for grinding cement clinker, and relatively few are used in conventional mineral processing. One of the rea- sons for its current limited use in the minerals processing industry is that design, scale-up and flowsheet assessment procedures are seen to be relatively immature and untested. This has reduced confidence in the potential application of the technology. To help rectify this situation an industry funded research project was undertaken, one of whose aims was to develop and prove a mathematical model of the HPGR and a scale-up procedure. Data were collected from tests using laboratory, pilot and in one case a full scale unit (2.2m diameter). A range of feed types were tested including quartz, limestone, kimberlite, bauxite, iron ore and gold ore. These data were then used to develop models of the size reduction performance, power draw, throughput and operating gap for a wide range of pressures, feed sizes, and roll speeds. This paper describes the models that have been initially developed and illustrates their accuracy using some of these data.

At the 1971 Annual Meeting we presented a paper on the results s obtained by wet magnetic separation on very fine, slightly magnetic material . Considerable interest was shown in a corollary subject, namely; on the type of magnetic con¬struction of the Magnetic Engineering Associates (MEA) high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS). it is the purpose of this paper to describe the principles of this separator and to give answers to many of the questions directed at us both in session and privately since the March 1971 meeting of the AIME. It is well-known that passage of a direct electric current through a wire shaped in the form of a loop results in a magnetic field being created in the volume enclosed within the loop. The magnetic field is proportional to the amperes of electric current passing through the wire. If the wire is in the form of a solenoid consisting of 11 turns, the magnetic field is n times larger. Hence the expression ampere-turns commonly associated with magnetic separators. If a particle, free to rotate and of higher magnetic susceptibility than the medium, is placed in a magnetic field, it will orient itself within that field, and it will move within the field in such a way as to go into a more intense part of the field. The traction on the particle is proportional to its inherent magnetic property which depends on its magnetic susceptibility and its volume, to the mag¬nitude of the field at the spot where the particle is situated, and to the magnitude of the field gradient at that spot. Of the three factors that control traction on a particle in a magnetic field, the magnet designer can effectively control two, the magnetic field and the field gradient. In a wet magnetic separator such as the HIMS magnetic separator, there is another force exerting traction on the particle, and that is the force of the fluid (liquid) on the particle. It is, therefore, essential to examine the relationship of the fluid to the magnetic field. First, assume the water in which magnetic and non-magnetic particles are suspended to be stagnant. In the absence of magnetic field, the only forces acting on the particles are those due to gravitation on the particles and on the fluid displaced. This is the subject, so important in gravity concentration, discussed in elementary texts of mineral engineering'.

This semantically ambiguous title purports to describe an examination of the question of automation and its effect on the industrial worker. More explicit titles might be "Painless Automation" or "Mechanization without a Sting" or, if I may steal a few phrases from the title of a recent interview Pith John L. Lewis, "More Machines, Fewer Men -- Is the Union Happy About It?" Automation has become the biggest ?scare word? for many industrial workers and their unions since "wage stabilization.? "To many a union orator," reports TIME of January 4, "automation is the sinister business of eliminating jobs." TIME might better have phrased this description by saying that many unions regard automation as the attempt to eliminate not jobs, but workers, The recent steel dispute was hung up for so long primarily because of the problems evolved of increased job efficiency through automation and job changes. Everywhere today there is heard the cry of our need for maintaining full employment within the context of an expanding economy echoing against the sheer reality of automation's displacement of thousands of workers through a rapid acceleration of productivity.

The bentonite industry in Europe includes both the smectite and hormite groups of clay minerals. The smectites are, essentially, a compendium of cationic differentiatable montmorillonite platelets which can be expanded in liquid media, whereas, members of the hormite group are characterized by fibrous and chain structured lattices which are non-expandable. As was pointed out in the March '78 issue of Industrial Minerals, each of the minerals in these groups has acquired a variety of names due to historic or regional usage.

The Henderson Mine, a new large scale underground development, is being developed by AMAX. The mine site is located about 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, adjacent to the east side of the Continental Divide. The mine's three access shafts are in a narrow alpine canyon at an elevation of 10,400 feet. The ore body of molybdenite is to the south of the shafts, 3,000 feet below the surface of nearby Red Mountain. The ore extends over 800 feet vertically and is about 1,700 feet by 2,200 feet horizontally. The eastern and southeastern boundaries of the deposit are still to be defined at the present time. Development mining is advancing at the mine site on a three shift, seven-day basis at the rate of about 2,000 feet per month. About twelve miles of heading have been driven at the present time, and work to sink No. 3 Shaft has started. Development mining was begun in 1967 with the sinking of No. 1 Shaft. This shaft is fully concreted, 23 feet in diameter and 2,441 feet in depth. It is the mine ventilation exhaust conduit. It is also used for development muck hoisting, stand-by mine water pumping and secondary access to the 8,035 foot level. This level is the mine exhaust ventilation level and was mined principally by conventional rail mining methods. From this one station at the 8,035 foot elevation a 5% ramp was driven to the initial production horizon at 8,100 feet with diesel rubber tired mining equipment. Subsequent mining has been entirely by mobile diesel equipment at the mine site.

South Africa has adopted its own code for public reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves in 2000. The South African Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code or Code) (SAIMM 2000) is presented here in its local and global context. The main aspects of the Code are listed and elaborated upon. The Code has been written with the participation of the major South African stakeholders in the field including Government institutions, the legal confraternity and the mining industry. The Code is modelled on, and is 90% compliant with, the Australasian Code for Reporting of Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (JORC Code) (AusIMM 1999). The paper also elaborates on the duties and responsibilities of Competent Persons signing off resource and reserve reports and on the listing requirements of the Johannesburg Securities Exchange (JSE), formerly the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, which has officially adopted the Code. The listing requirements were updated in 2000 to incorporate the SAMREC Code and subsequently in 2002, effective 2003. The ongoing obligations of the JSE for the exploration and mining companies are being compiled and are expected to be effective from early 2004.

Water soluble polymers play an important role in many industries. The mining industry is dependent on these materials to help accomplish many solid-liquid (water) separations. Mechanical devices alone are not capable of achieving the degree of separation needed. Mechanical and chemical separations act in concert to accomplish the necessary separation. The history of the use of water soluble polymers has gone through several evolutionary phases and I believe we are facing another of these phases. At first, various natural products were common - starches, gums, and various polysaccharides. These were replaced by the synthetic polymers based on copolymerization of various vinylmonomers mainly in conjunction with acrylamide. The use of these polymers and their needs continues to grow. This paper will cover a brief overview followed by a look at the future of water soluble polymers. A focus will be on applications of water soluble polymers in the mining industry.

Mining is a very important economical activity in Peru which has been recently developed without considering environmental aspects. Here, we show an experience at the Milpo mine, situated 4,200 meters above sea level; a mining company that has the value of being one of few from the last decade that is engaged in consolidating a model of environmental protection. The model includes aspects of contamination prevention and control, with bioindicators such as pasture cultivation, vegetables, forests, and hydrobiological species breeding. Socially, through means of development programs in natural areas, forestation and support to rural agriculture, together with environmental education, it is being demonstrated that it is possible to ensure tangible results in environmental conservation and the well-being of the populations around the mine.

The Xinglongzhuang Coal preparation plant project was a joint effort by American and Chinese engineers and for the most part designed to American standards. The plant owner and operator is the Yanzhou Coal Mine Administration, a division of the Shandong Coal Corporation. These are state owned companies which ultimately fall under the Ministry of Coal in Beijing. The new 3.0 million ton per year Xinglongzhuang mine is located in southern Shandong province in east-central China about mid-way between Beijing and Shanghai. This is an agriculture area, flat terrain, relatively dry climate with temperatures similar to Western Kentucky. During Confucius time (551-479 B.C.) this area was known as the state of Lu. Confucius home town of Qufu is about 20 kilometers to the north-east of the mine site.

Safety management must be the number one priority of all management's production and profit objectives. Computers and communications technology have revolutionized many industries. In earthmoving, this revolution has just begun. The major changes are still to come but are just around the corner. This article presents a vision of this upcoming revolution in the earthmoving industry. This vision includes basic communication, machine monitoring and diagnostics, job and business management, planning and operations, and machine control. For the industry to realize maximum benefits from the information age, it must have a vision of the future that is shared by technologists, machinery producers and miners. History of the information age During the 1970s, the information age revolutionized retailing, starting with the grocery business. By using bar codes and laser scanners, individual items were connected to the information world of computers and communications. Once this connection was made, the data on what an item was and where and when it moved became valuable information for inventory control and marketing. Not only was the information valuable, it was easy and inexpensive to collect and manipulate. The effort required to provide the consumer with the right product at the right time was reduced. Costs went down and customer satisfaction went up. But there were casualties of this revolution. Many inventory counters lost their jobs. There were also equipment casualties. Cash registers that could not interface with the digital world were discarded long before the end of their useful life.

While the United States has been the world's largest volume producer and marketer of phosphatic fertilizers for many years, it has recently suffered heavy losses for a variety of reasons. While improved economic performance is expected, it is still at least a year or two away. But when recovery does manifest itself, it will likely yield only mediocre profits, due in part to the fact that about 50 percent of output is export-dependent. Therefore, there appears to be limited likelihood that profits will be adequate to justify the further outlay of large amounts of capital for expansion.

"The MINER Act requires the installation of post-accident, two-way communications and electronic tracking systems for all coal mines. One communication system which can satisfy this requirement is an electrode-based, through-the-earth (TTE) communication system, which sends signal directly through the overburden of a mine. The performance of these types of systems relies on several controlling factors such as earth conductivity, overburden depth, operating frequency, TX/RX antenna length, TX/RX offset, TX/RX orientation angle and TX current. In an effort to estimate attenuation through the earth, NIOSH researchers developed an analytic solution for the electrical field distribution of an electrode-based TTE communication system for the extremely low-frequency (ELF) range (< 30 Hz) or DC excitation source. The analytic model was then validated using test data measured at an operating coal mine. The validated model can be used to optimize the operating frequency, estimate the required transmitting current, choose appropriate TX/RX orientation, and predict the performance of an electrode-based TTE system at a coal mine. INTRODUCTION One of the requirements of the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act (MINER Act) of 2006 is the installation of post-accident, two-way communications and electronic tracking systems for all underground coal mines. As one of the through-the-earth (TTE) wireless communication methods available for the mining industry, the electrode-based, or linear, TTE systems establish communication by inducing a current within the earth medium by use of a pair of current probes. The resultant current is detected as a voltage by a similar set of distant probes. These probes could be an insulated piece of wire tied to two electrodes grounded at distant ends, or the grounded ends could be rails, roof bolts, or grounded electric rods. The analytical solution developed in a homogenous half-space, for this form for various transmitter/receiver (TX/RX) configurations, will be presented in this paper. The communication signals can be sent either from underground to surface (uplink) or from surface to underground (downlink). In order to achieve a successful communication link, it is necessary to understand the electric fields within the earth so that the appropriate size of transmitting antenna, TX/RX relative orientation, and operating frequency can be chosen. Hill and Wait gave the explicit forms of partial magnetic fields and partial electric fields of electrode-based TTE downlink communication with finite cable length [1]. In prior research, the E-fields of electric line transmitter were obtained for a static TX current [2] [3]. In this paper, the general and explicit forms for electrode-based TTE electric fields are developed and presented. The solutions for the extremely low-frequency (ELF) range (< 30 Hz) or DC excitation source obtained from these forms are presented. Also, factors that affect the E-field strength at RX are discussed."

Column experiments were performed to determine the ability of Madison aquifer material to adsorb arsenic and other constituents in a heavily mined watershed of the Black Hills in western South Dakota. The Madison aquifer is a karstic dolomite and limestone reservoir that is exposed on the flanks of the Black Hills. Streams that cross the Madison in the eastern Black Hills typically lose all their flow to the aquifer at sinkholes. In this work, Madison aquifer material was obtained for loading of six-inch diameter columns, which were backfilled with Madison aquifer water. Stream water then was allowed to displace the aquifer water during column testing in order to simulate mixing of the two waters at sinkholes and to determined adsorption of arsenic and other dissolved constituents. Initial results show that some adsorption of arsenic occurred when compared to more conservative tracers such as nitrate.

I. INTRODUCTION During the course of our activities in assisting mining companies, we have had access to the monitoring results for personnel from a large number of uranium mines. The results differ greatly from one mine to another. One of our objectives has been to discover the origin of these differences. It is evident that they are largely due to variations in the geological context, to mining methods, and to the organization of the work ; but we also found that the rigor with which measures are implemented to prevent the personnel from being exposed to radiations is also a cause. In order to advise mining operators effectively, we have asked ourselves the following question Given the dosimetric results of a mining site, how can it be known - if occupational exposure has been reduced to the lowest possible level (dose optimization principle recommended by the ICRP) ; - if the exposures were justified, which would not necessarily be the case following a questionable choice of the mining method, for instance, or a lack of efficiency in the maintenance and repairs of ventilation apparatus or even an excess of radiation protection. It is necessary to establish some criteria, while taking into consideration the specific conditions for each mine, in order to determine whether a mining company is adequately implementing radiation protection procedures. This need led us to attempt a modelization of the occupational exposures of uranium miners ; the preliminary phase is presented here. Although voluntarily still very basic, this model makes it possible to demonstrate the role of certain dynamic or passive variables. Moreover, the model presents the concept of specific irradiation of a mining site equal to the collective dose received per ton of uranium metal supplied to the uranium mill. The specific irradiation can therefore be used to indicate the effectiveness of radiation protection procedures at a given mining site. This model can be used for - previsional exposure studies based on the use of data gathered at each site, making it possible to compare various work methods and to determine prevention means ; - qualification of "radiation protection" procedures at a mining site ; - detection of unjustified exposures ; - research of ways to reduce inevitable exposures. 2. DETRIMENT TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH A GIVEN EXPOSURE DISTRIBUTION Respecting exposure limits ensures that delayed stochastic effects are the only health risks to workers. If the hypothesis of linearity in the dose-effect relationship is applied, the detriment to a group of workers is proportional to the sum of exposure for all the workers, or the collective exposure usually expressed as man x rem. On this point the linearity of effects hypothesis makes it possible to consider that two different standard deviation distributions having the same mean value are equivalent. It would be possible, then, to reduce the standard deviation by changing the distribution of workers at the various working places without changing the mean exposure value. In other words, without taking into consideration the practical implications, individual limits can be respected by rotating the personnel or by reducing the individual working period which would be compensated by increasing the number of workers. The collective dose would remain the same, which would justify the use of the concept of collective exposure. 3. "RADIATION PROTECTION" QUALITY INDEX AT VARIOUS MINING SITES Each mining site is responsible for its own collective dose, but it is also responsible for producing a certain amount of uranium metal in the ore sent to the uranium mill. These two quantities must be brought together in order to establish the "radiation protection" quality index of a mining site. This quality index, called-specific irradiation (Ir) is expressed in rem.ton -1 for external irradiation, in mJoule.ton-1 for inhaled [a]-energy, and in Ci.ton -1 for inhaled radon *. The specific irradiation represents the health hazard which must be associated to the extraction of one ton of uranium metal. Figures la and lb present a system of coordinates for which the axis of the abscisses is graduated in tons of U metal and the axis of the ordinates is graduated in units of collective exposures. In the EEC, the regulation is based on the measurement of the amounts of radon 222 inhaled.

The rocks and minerals of the moon will be included among the raw materials used to construct a lunar base. The lunar regolith, the fragmental material present on the surface of the Moon, is composed mostly of disaggregated rocks and minerals, but also includes glassy fragments fused together by meteorite impacts. The finer fraction (i.e., < lcm) of the regolith, the soil, is probably the most important portion of the regolith for use at a lunar base. For example, soil can be used in bulk as insulation against cosmic rays, for lunar ceramic and abodes, or for growing plants. However, beneficiation of the soil can provide other feedstocks. For example, the soil contains abundant solar-wind implanted elements, as we1 1 as various minerals, particularly oxide phases, which are of potential economic importance. These components of the soil are sources of oxygen and hydrogen for water and rocket fuel, helium for nuclear energy, and metals such as Fe, Ni, Al, Si, and Ti. The uses of the lunar materials only await a fertile imagination.
