This paper concern the specific adsorption of sulfate anions on nonmetallic minerals and its role in flotation. The specific surface affinity of sulfate ions in various systems has been observed in the results of electrokinetic measurements that show conditions under which sodium sulfate can reverse the sign of the zeta potential. The electrical double layer model provides a means for interpreting the results and for estimating the free energy of adsorption of sulfate ions. Because of their surface activity, sulfate ions not only can function as a depressant in the flotation of oxide minerals with physisorbed anionic collectors but also can function as an activator for flotation with physisorbed cationic collectors. Their role in depressing or enhancing the flotation of the sparingly-soluble mineral barite is also explained in terms of the double layer model.

This paper briefly reviews the historical development of the Rotary Kiln-Electric Furnace Process, which was first applied commercially to the treatment of qarnieritic ores in New Caledonia in the mid-fifties. It describes various technological improvements introduced, since, in industrial plants or developed in pilot facilities where a wide variety of nickel oxide ores has been treated success- fully over the years. Major categories of ores are characterized. The effect of their physical and chemical properties on their performance in the electric furnace is discussed. The relationships between ore composition, ferronickel grade and slag composition are analyzed and their effect on slag and metal tapping temperatures, nickel recovery, and electrode voltage are discussed.

The Seismic Interactive Interpretation Workstation (S//W) provides a wide spectrum of utilities ranging from improving field acquisition techniques, data processing and interpretation of coal seismic data. The power of the workstation lies in the interpretation process where various sets of geophysical and geological data are integrated to form a network of information that is stored in a database. Computer models are generated from known borehole and geologic information and later cross-correlated with the processed seismic data. Structural and stratigraphic modeling techniques add another dimension to the interpretation process. Complex trace attributes highlight subtle features not easily observed in black and white sections. Using the computer workstation, the explorationist gains valuable insight and conducts more intelligent interpretation of seismic data through a more comprehensive network of data analysis.

This paper re-examines the mixing conditions in the collection zone of flotation columns. These have in the past been characterized with a single uniaxial dispersion coefficient, E. The relationship between E and column diameter, Dc, is examined based on residence time distributions (RTDs) in columns of Dc ranging from 5.lcm to 184cm. Results agree with published correlations in chemical engineering, i.e. E a Dc '" , Data explain why pilot columns display significant upgrading between the feed level and the interface, whereas plant columns do not. It also suggests that, for plant columns, the full collection zone (up to the interface) can be considered when calculating the residence time. A mathematical model considering two regions of different mixing was compared to the single E model. Both models adequately fitted measured age distributions inside the column and overall RTDs. Measured and simulated mixing characteristics are compared to those of flotation banks, using a tanks-in-series approach; banks of comparable mixing to columns are identified.

Bergbau AG Niederrhein, a subsidiary of Ruhrkohle AG; Essen, Germany, is working coal mines on both sides of the Rhine River. The Prosper Mine in the City of Bottrop has a production of about 13,000 tons per day and has been in operation since the turn of the century. Mining has moved to the north as coal deposits south of Bottrop are exhausted. To facilitate ventilation, material handling, and transportation new shafts are being constructed in the northern coal fields. The Prosper 10 shaft is being sunk to develop the Prosper - Haniel coal field which has reserves of 280 million tons. In October, 1976 Bergbau AG Niederrhein awarded the shaft sinking contract for the 1047 m deep, 8 m inside diameter Prosper 10 shaft to Gewerkschaft Walter; Essen, Germany. Construction costs will amount to about 40 million DM with construction completion scheduled for 1981. GEOLOGY The shaft, located near the town of Kirchhellen north Bottrop, is being sunk in the Grafenwalder Horst between two faults on the south west flank of the Kirchheller Anticline. 270 m of upper cretaceus sands and marls overlay sandstone bedrock at the shaft location. The upper 124 m of this section contain highly saturated sands interspersed with marl. In order to successfully sink the shaft through this section, ground stabilization by freezing was used.

The minerals industry, comprising producers and users of industrial minerals and metals, aggregates and ornamental or dimensional stone, oil, gas and derivates as well as coal and by-products, provides vital inputs to Europe's economy and social well-being. Because of their great diversity, minerals and their derived products are necessary for almost every aspect of life. The European Technology Platform on Sustainable Mineral Resources (ETP SMR) unites hundreds stakeholders from industry, the re-search community, public authorities, the financial community, regulators, consumers and civil society around the major technological challenges to the sector, in order to jointly act towards a common vision. The Platform will contribute to strengthening one of the fundamental pillars of the European economy and society. The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) of the ETP SMR is designed to act as a realistic and inspirational guide to defining a comprehensive research programme that will mobilise stake-holders and ensure that European competences are at the forefront of science & technology worldwide. It will help to stimulate investment in research and provide guidance for policy options. The SRA shows the way the mineral industry has to proceed in forthcoming decades if it is to serve European society in the way necessary. Without a strong European minerals industry, the future development of the EU economy risks to be curbed significantly.

INTRODUCTION The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) (Figure 1) was adopted in 1972 as the most cost-effective way to bring Chicago area waterways up to Federal and State water quality standards. TARP will significantly reduce pollution of these waterways and provide flood relief for Chicago and 53 adjacent suburban communities. These communities, covering an area of 971 sq km (375 sq miles), are at present served by combined sewers, which carry both raw sewage and stormwater. Because porous ground surfaces have been covered over in recent years by buildings, streets, and parking lots, stormwater runoff into sewers frequently exceeds the capacity of the sewers. When this happens, sewers back-up into hundreds of thousands of basements, and the overflows on the combined sewers discharge rainwater mixed with raw sewage directly into the area's waterways at 645 overflow points. The result is severe pollution of the waterways and flooding in 53 communities. During particularly heavy rains, overloaded rivers have to be relieved by opening the locks and allowing the polluted waterways to flow into Lake Michigan, the region's water source. Goals of TARP 1. PREVENT BACKFLOWS INTO LAKE MICHIGAN. 2. ELIMINATE WATERWAY POLLUTION CAUSED BY COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOWS. 3. PROVIDE AN OUTLET FOR FLOOD WATERS.

For the past quarter of century, much more effort and research have been expended in developing the "optimum" ultimate pit limit design algorithms and much less to solving the "optimum" open pit production sequencing. However, the potential economic benefit to an operating mine is far greater for the latter than the former. Unfortunately, the problem of "optimum" open-pit production sequencing has not been fully solved to date. This paper first reviews the past and currently used methodologies for developing this sequence. The staggered pit phase geometry problem of advanced stripping and operational constraints such as ore and waste tonnage requirements by period and necessary contiguity of mining faces are the main reasons why the "optimum" production sequencing problem has not been solved as yet. This paper also explains why any method which attempts to simplify the problem using ultimate pit limit design algorithm will fail to reach an "optimum" solution.

This paper details the development of a functional work index that characterises the relationship between the energy that is imparted by a Roller Press into materials, against the resultant size reduction achieved. Such a Roller Press work index is necessary for this new grinding technology to differentiate it from Bond's grinding work index, and to clear up confusion that arises with such a comparison to Bond. The energy usage in a Roller Press does not follow Bond's "Third Theory of Comminution" but rather Rittinger's theory of new surface creation. The relationships for such a work index have been developed from the viewpoint of an equipment manufacturer with the hope that they will be of assistance to the minerals industry in the design of grinding circuits incorporating Roller Press comminution. The work index contains modification factors that reflects the effect of oversize, fines, moisture. closed-circuit operation and roll surface characteristics on the energy verses size reduction relationship. It has evolved from the results obtained from testing of a wide range of ore and mineral types that include bauxite, coal, kimberlite, limestone, iron and chrome ores, base metal and gold ores. The results show that even for such a diverse range of materials, they all demonstrate similarities of behaviour when comminuted in a Roller Press.

Conventional and advanced coal preparation technologies were investigated through both a literature search and through direct contact with investigators and developers. In addition to a brief description of each process, performance characteristics including feedstock type, ash and sulfur reduction, thermal energy recovery and cost are provided in a tabular form. Seven of the most commonly utilized conventional coal preparation processes, including those respectively accepting coarse, intermediate and fine coal feed, were reviewed. It was found that certain properly implemented and well maintained conventional processes were capable of better than 75 percent ash removal while recovering 90 percent or more of the inherent thermal energy. Almost 50 advanced coal preparation processes were investigated based on biological, chemical and physical principles. Physical processes investigated included cycloning, homogeneous heavy media, electrostatic, high gradient magnetic, flotation and selective coalescence. Using pulverized coal as a feedstock, some of these processes are respectively reported to be capable of removing better than 95 percent ash. 95 percent pyritic sulfur, and 50 percent organic sulfur while incurring energy losses of less than 5 percent.

Until recently, the application of the Jameson Cell technology in North America has been restricted to minerals processing. Recently, laboratory, pilot-plant and full-scale testing has been conducted to assess the Jameson Cell's ability to effectively treat fine coal. Based on the data, carrying-capacity relationships have been developed. In addition to its operational simplicity, the Jameson Cell has the ability to provide a separation efficiency near the theoretical separation performance on the basis of ash rejection while achieving a relatively high throughput capacity Tie results obtained from the various fine coal cleaning applications in North America is presented in this publication.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, has investigated the use of rheology to provide insight into the mechanism of flocculation. A technique developed by Tattersall has been modified and used to explain the flocculation of calcium montmorillonite with polyethylene oxide. The results indicated that there are two types of bond systems operating during the flocculation sequence. Also, flocculation results are highly dependent on the shear rate and the amount of polymer added.

A brief description of the mining method and ventilation system of the San Manuel Mine?s first presented; this is necessary to an understanding of the heat problem and cooling system. The problem of heat at San Manuel is discussed. Charts and graphs showing the relationships between ambient surface air and underground temperature conditions are given. A history of attempts to cool air at San Manuel is presented, starting with the first refrigeration type air coolers which were used in development headings, and followed by the underground water chillers that were used in conjunction with cooling coils. Goals for design of a centralized cooling system with ultimate heat rejection through surface cooling towers are presented. The problems found with using the centralized system in main cooling coils are discussed. Plans for modification of the centralized system as utilized is the summer of 1987 are given, along with results obtained and problems with the system. Plans for subsequent modifications are presented.

Coal flotation has been practiced since about 1920 in Europe and since about 1926 in the U.S. Over 200 U.S. coal preparation plants now use the process to recover coal. Over the 60 year period, the fundamental principles upon which flotation is based have been enumerated, but the interaction between the parameters that affect flotation has not been quantified and a useful model which accounts for these parameters has not yet been developed. A comprehensive and user friendly kinetic model coupled with better process monitoring and control instrumentation would allow plant operating personnel to better predict flotation performance and better control the flotation process in coal preparation plants.

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines' (USBM) world reserve/consumption ratios (Table 1) indicate that, if the world is relatively peaceful in the next two decades, there should be ample world supplies of minerals to permit rising standards of living for increasing world population. But it must be remembered that most mineral reserve estimates are conservative and that normal mining practice is to develop a ton of ore reserve for every ton mined. It should be noted that "reserve," as used in this paper follows the definition given in US Geological Survey (USGS) Circular 831, 1980; "that part of the reserve base which could be economically extracted or produced at the time of the determination." In addition to accurately determining the geologic parameters of mineral deposits, a judgment as to whether that deposit is a "reserve" per se involves consideration of many other factors. These factors were recognized nearly a century ago by a well-known mining engineer and later President, Herbert Hoover. In "Principles of Mining," 1909, Hoover wrote: "Unfortunately for the mining engineer, not only has he to weigh the amount of risk inherent in calculations involved in the mine itself, but also that due to fluctuations in the value of metals. If the ore is shipped to custom works, he has to contemplate also variations in freights and smelting charges ...In a free market, the law of supply and demand governs the values of metals as it does that of all other commodities. So far, except for tariff walls and smelting rings, there is a free market in the metals under discussion. The demand for metals varies with the unequal fluctuations of the industrial tides. The sea of commercial activity is subject to heavy storms, and the mine valuer is compelled to serve as weather prophet on this ocean of trouble. High prices, which are the result of industrial booms, bring about overproduction, and the collapse of these begets a shrinkage of demand, wherein consequently the tide of price turns back." Current supplies and use There have been ample supplies of most mineral materials to permit several-fold increases of world production of common major mineral based minerals (steel, aluminum, copper, and cement) over the past three decades. Motor vehicle production is a major consumer of mineral materials. However, in the last decade, down-sizing to facilitate improved fuel efficiency and reduce harmful emissions has reduced the weight of the average US-made automobile 15%, to 1.5 t (3200 lbs). Also in the US, there are 92 million dwelling units, or on average, fewer than three persons per dwelling unit. Construction is another major consumer of materials in the industrialized developed countries. It will also be a major consumer of materials worldwide as less developed nations seek to improve their infrastructures by adding roads, bridges, railroads, airfields, ports, and housing. Fortunately, a large number of traditional common materials, many of mineral origin and also many of agricultural origin, are readily available for construction. Mine waste characterization and risk assessment currently focesses on water quality and largely ignores boththe charteristics of the wastes themselves and how wastes interact with the environment. Characterization of the parameters that control contamination of pore waters and their migration can quantitatively assess risk and remediation strategies in terms of cost effectiveness and risk reduction. Since mine waste characteristics are spatial, geostatistical methods should be used for characterization and assessment. A number of geostatistical methods are reviewed in terms of their application to mine waste sampling, modeling and risk assessment and management.

IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. has developed ligands, ?amed SuperLig®, which have specific applications in the gold mdustry. These ligands use molecular recognition technology (MRT). One ligand has been developed to selectively recover gold and silver from tailings solutions and from pregnant Merrill-Crowe solutions. Another ligand removes free cyanide, _ th10cyanate, other cyanide species, as well as copper and other base metal cyanide complexes from leached gold-ore solutions. The development of these "species selective'' SuperLig® prod­ucts allows for the more efficient operation of gold recovery processes and opens up the possibility of the economic devel­opment of high-copper gold ores. The resulting gold eluate is a high grade and a high purity stream which will simplify the need for further refming. Engineered systems based on MRT consist of a few unit operations utilizing standard equipment and mate­rials of construction. The process is simple to operate, thereby lending itself to automated modular design, which is both eco­nomic to manufacture and to operate. Test results for the gold and cyanide-copper systems are presented in order to demonstrate the high selectivity and effi­ciency of MRT technology in recovering these species from solution. . IBC Advanced Technologies, Inc. (IBC) and Fluor Daniel, Inc. formed a strategic alliance in late 1994. The goal of the alliance is to combine IBC's scientific expertise in the MRT field with Fluor Daniel's engineering capabilities in the metal­lurgical industry. The successful integration of overburden casting techniques into the mine production cycle can be an extremely cost effective use of explosives. The entire mining cycle revolves around the cast blasting and to be successful requires a great deal of planning and cooperation. Several operations of Cyprus Coal Company in the Appalachian coal fields have successfully integrated blast casting into their mine plan. This paper will detail the parameters and necessary controls to integrate an overburden casting program into a surface coal operation.

Geologists take the role of mine geologist when they apply their science to the design and operation of a specific minerals project. In doing so, they use the entire spectrum of procedures in economic geology and engineering geology to deal with a specific system of orebodies and associated environment. The objectives are established by stages in the life cycle of a mining operation as it goes from a prospect to a development project and on to a mine. This paper summarizes the elements of a mining geologist's role, with examples highlighted from the preceding papers.
