Bulkspray cooling has been economically applied in cooling the hot environment of South African gold mines for the past two decades. Its success in that country led to its introduction at Gulf Mineral Resources Co.'s Mt. Taylor Mine in 1981 when increased drifting imposed additional cooling requirements. The bulkspray cooler developed and used at Mt. Taylor has a heat transfer capability of about 500 to 1500 kW. It is compact and portable, designed to be moved as required to maintain working temperatures in the advancing drift faces.

A unique process for removing cyanide and base metal complexes from industrial waste streams was patented by Borberly et al. (1984). The process uses S0, (liquid or gas, or solutions of sulfite salts, or from burning elemental sulfur), plus air that is dispersed in the effluent using a well agitated vessel. Acid produced in the oxidation reactions is neutralized with lime at a controlled pH generally in the range 7 to 10. The reaction requires the presence of soluble copper as a catalyst that can be supplemented by copper sulfate if necessary. The process can be applied to the detoxification of gold and silver mining waste streams, such as carbon-in-pulp (CIP) tailing pulps, barren solution bleeds, pond waters and heap leach rinse solutions and also to plating shops waste waters. The S02/Air process has substantial advantages over two of the main alternative methods of cyanide destruction, namely alkaline chlorination and hydrogen peroxide. Alkaline chlorination is highly penalized in terms of reagent consumption. Chlorine is a strong oxidant reacting with species other than cyanide present in the effluent such as thiocyanate and sulfides. Furthermore, alkaline chlorination is an incomplete detoxification process. Iron cyanide is not removed and the potential for harmful byproducts species exist. Consequently, final effluents may be subject to additional treatment in order to comply with regulatory demands.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) constructed four passive biochemical reactor systems (BCRs) to treat mining influenced water (MIW) in the Bunker Hill Superfund area near Coeur D?Alene, Idaho between 2002 and 2003. Initially, the BCRs operated very effectively. However, in the past couple of years, the zinc removal effectiveness of the four BLM BCRs has declined [1]. The central objective of this study was to characterize the microbial communities and substrate present within the BLM BCRs and to use these factors to propose strategies to promote sustained sulfate reduction levels. Microbial communities were characterized by quantifying total bacteria and sulfate reducing species. Substrate was characterized by quantifying the percent organic, acid soluble organic, acid insoluble organic, and bioavailable material within the BCR. The results suggest the depletion of bioavailable organic substrates is the primary cause of the decline in zinc removal and not the microbial community structure. The ability to assess the amount of bioavailable organic substrate and microbial community is important to the understanding of the sulfate reducing capacity of the BLM BCRs and developing strategies to facilitate performance enhancement of the current BLM BCRs. The characterization of organic substrate and microbial community structure are also important to improving design of future passive treatment systems for mining influenced waters.

INTRODUCTION The use of roof and rock bolts to reinforce the strata is an established method of rock support in both underground and surface excavations. However, the need to drill a hole, extract the drill-rods, and then place the bolt is time-consuming and costly. This becomes even more significant if the bolting is repetitive and extensive as in coal mining. Though the main thrust of this development was directed towards coal mining, the basic concepts are also widely applicable to all excavations. The authors, therefore, feel that this innovation should be of interest in rapid excavation and in tunneling. In the case of coal mining, it has been established from past statistics that the roof-bolting operation is the most hazardous activity. This is primarily because of the operator being exposed to unsupported ground. It is evident that remote installation of roof bolts would markedly improve the safety of the operation, if accomplished more readily with self-drilling bolts rather than the conventional two-step variety operation. Thus, in addition to increasing productivity, this development can be considered to be a milestone towards further improvements. The objective of this program was to establish the technical and economic feasibility of self-drilling roof bolts for use in coal mines. It might be clarified at the outset that this work was, therefore, directed primarily at showing that workable self-drilling bolts with less cost can be developed, which could be effectively used in mines. It was not to fabricate a production model bolt.

MINERAL EXPLORATION 'The Function of Exploration Mineral exploration aims at locating the presence of economic deposits and establishing their nature, shape, and grade. As all ore bodies are finite, exploration is essentially the lifeblood of the mining industry. It is divided into two phases, reconnaissance and target investigation. It involves geological mapping, geophysical prospecting (aerial and ground or both), geochemical surveys, prospect drilling, and/or exploratory under-ground workings. Successful exploration is followed by development drilling, mine development, and eventually operation. In underground mining, the term "ore" is applied rather loosely to metalliferous rock that can be profit- ably mined, but nonmetallic industrial minerals and energy related materials constitute a large and growing portion of the tonnage extracted by underground methods each year. It is appropriate, therefore, to consider exploration as the search for any useful substance occurring in the earth or in the oceans that is of sufficient value as to volume, grade, chemical and physical com- position, and location as to make extraction by mining commercially profitable for the investment required. The Selection Process The search for ore includes hundreds of mineral commodities. The more successful exploration organizations tend to restrict the search to the mineral commodities for which they have strong exploration expertise and which have a high probability of being concentrated in areas open to exploration and development in sufficient volume, grade, and proximity to the surface to warrant the large expenditures of risk capital in finding an ore body. Special expertise is needed to engage in mineral exploration and development for the extended periods required for success. Individual prospectors continue to discover mineral occurrences, but it generally takes an organization with strong financial resources to carry the exploration process forward to the point of developing "ore." Still greater corporate resources in the form of management, engineering, and sales capability are needed to develop an ore body into an operating mine. In the past, companies other than those engaged in mining rarely conducted exploration, since they lacked the technical skills and know-how to bring a mine to fruition. A notable trend in recent years has been the success of other resource-oriented firms, such as petroleum companies, that have not only acquired the necessary skills to engage in exploration for hard minerals, but are doing so on a far more intensive scale than known in the industry heretofore. The desire to diversify from increasingly regulated oil and gas, the potential for the discovery of a bonanza, and the large scale of mining projects for these capital-intensive firms are the attractions. US government and certain international organizations, such as the United Nations, have fielded sizable exploration programs in the past decade on behalf of Third World countries wherein many of the world's higher grade deposits and scarce mineral resources are located. The level of overall mineral exploration in the industry is, regrettably, closely geared to the business cycle. Accelerated search during the periods of strong demand, shortages, and high prices, together with the long lead times necessary to develop mineral finds, often creates surges in supply which invariably are followed by a collapse in prices. The trend is, therefore, to exploration funding by larger better-endowed firms having the staying power to weather the cyclical nature of mining. Tax incentives, tariff policies, and other incentives have a decided impact on the level and nature of exploration. Surface mining regulations and environmental forces have fostered a renewed interest in under- ground development despite the lower average costs of surface mining. Spiraling inflation has caused mining costs to outpace prices for many mineral substances. Organizations increasingly are directing their search away from high- grade but limited tonnage occurrences toward low-grade disseminated bulk tonnages amenable to mining on a vast scale. Mining continues, therefore, to grow even more capital-intensive with half-billion-dollar mine-mill- smelter complexes now commonplace, compared with the hundred-million-dollar projects of a decade ago. Reconnaissance Exploration Having elected to search for specific mineral commodities, the exploration company narrows its focus to a reconnaissance of those regions offering the best potential. A working hypothesis which is constantly up- dated concerning the geologic controls for ore occurrence guides the search. The possibilities for discovery are best in areas of existing mines and known ore bodies, where the probabilities are high for additional ore occurrences. In such areas, published data on the trends and geologic controls of known mineral occurrences aid the search. Even in some remote territories, a variety of geologic data is available to the explorationist. The major sources of basic geologic data are the libraries of the US Geological Survey (USGS), the state geological surveys, the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the US Bureau of Mines, and various institutions such as Colorado School of Mines. Overseas, virtually all of the countries have their own geologic survey groups which are associated directly, or indirectly, with their respective ministries of mines. The objective of reconnaissance exploration is to narrow the search by pinpointing target areas having interesting mineralization. These favorable areas are then investigated in detail to delineate potential ore bodies.

Traditionally in coal processing jigs have been used to clean the coarse coal fraction, the +3/8" or +1/4" material. Today with the advent of modern fine coal jigs in the United States, its place was moved from the coarse to the inter- mediate coal circuit, the 3/8" x 100 mesh. The most economical coarse coal circuit to build and operate is a heavy media bath circuit. The following table summarizes the cost per raw coal ton processed for a coarse coal jig circuit, and a coarse coal heavy media bath circuit. The flowsheets used to compare these two circuits are shown in Figures 1 and 2.

The chemical states and ions interaction were significant interest to understanding columbite mineral/acid solution interface dissolution and reaction. The present research work was focus to explore the specific cations ( Nb5+, Fe2+, Fe3+) distribution near the ferrocolumbite mineral/acid solution interface, and determine these cations leaching sequence in sulfuric acid solution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy had the potential to provide detailed dissolution information by resolving chemical state and ion distribution of ferrocolumbite during sulfuric acid leaching process. The binding energy decreased in sequence as Nb5+- O < Fe2+- O < Fe3+- O, and increased in sequence as Fe3+- SO4 < Fe2+- SO4 < Nb5+- SO4 which revealed Nb in ferrocolumbite mineral more easily leached comparing to Fe. The ratio of Fe2+- O/Fe3+-O on leaching residue decreased, and Fe2+- SO4/Fe3+-SO4 ratio increased as sulfuric acid contraction increasing suggested that the Fe2+ oxidized to Fe3+ and released Nb from mineral and dissolved into leaching solution. The ratio of Nb/Fe was lower 0.07 with sulfuric acid contraction increasing which meant Nb dissolution promoted by oxidation of iron. The dissolution mechanism of Fe element in ferrocolumbite mineral was Fe2+- O broken and generated Fe2+. Fe2+ was oxidized to Fe3+ in concentrated sulfuric acid leaching solution. The dissolution mechanism of Nb in ferrocolumbite was that Nb5+- O was directly digested by H+, and the released Nb5+ complex with SO4 2− ion formed cation − anion pairs. The coordination of formation Nb5+- SO4 pairs and oxidation Fe2+ in mineral could promote ferrocolumbite dissolution.

A full-scale geotechnical model of a 15-foot (4.6 m) wide coal mine entry in correlation with computer finite-element analysis (FEA) is being employed at the Bureau of Mines Spokane Research Center for basic research on roof-bolt support systems. Physical and computer modeling of various coal mine roof-bolt reinforcement systems will increase our basic knowledge of how roof supports function. This information, in correlation with computer FEA and underground verification tests, will provide a basis for establishing safer, more cost- effective roof control plans and help establish guidelines for employing fully grouted and conventional bolting systems. The basic rationale for the research, research approach, methods and equipment employed, results to date, and future research plans are described in this paper.

Water is the mainstay for the beneficiation of fine-size coal and minerals, but it is also the least desirable constituent of the final product. The basic concept of the novel process described in this paper is based on the differential surface heat absorption capacity of the individual particles. When a differentially heated solid mixture is placed on a moving belt that has been coated with low-temperature melting resin, the hotter component of the mixture will stick to the belt while the relatively cooler component will stay free on the belt and fall off at the end of the belt run. Experiments were conducted with pyrite, coal and quartz particles of 6 × 18 mesh size. The goal of the test program was to find the optimum conditions at which there exists a required temperature difference between minerals and coal particles by controlling the operating and system variables. Preliminary test results show that there is a potential for separating mineral matter from coal using the thermo-adhesive separation technique.

"Scrubbing both horizontal (drum) and vertical (attrition) are considered simple unit operations in the beneficiation of phosphate ores. In general, the operating conditions are fixed at high solids content based on the experience of the engineering or equipment manufacturing company responsible of designing this beneficiation step. Nevertheless, scrubbing is a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes, break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Therefore, it is considered that as high solids content as possible should be used to enhance particle-particle interactions (impact and rubbing) without taking into consideration the rheology of the system. However, scrubbing unit operations design requires studying the balance between the increase of particle-particle interactions with the cushion effect that may occur when slimes, clays and fines decrease the availability of free water increasing the apparent viscosity of the phosphate slurry up to that of a paste consistency. This paper presents data from laboratory tests to determine the best operating conditions for the design of these unit operations based on the highest P2O5 grade obtained with the lowest impurities for different size fractions. INTRODUCTION In the beneficiation of phosphate ores, unit operations such as horizontal scrubbing (drum) and vertical scrubbing (attrition) are considered simple unit operations. Therefore, little attention is given to the design of horizontal and vertical scrubbing during the basic engineering studies, and the detail engineering stage, the manufacturers recommending “standard” units and operating conditions based on their experience. Due diligence of several beneficiation phosphate plants at industrial scale indicates that a deficient scrubbing of the phosphate ore results in significant problems in downstream unit operations, such as classification, clarification, gravity separation, magnetic separation, flotation, dewatering, and filtration. Scrubbing is in fact a complex unit operation designed to clean the surfaces of phosphate mineral particles of slimes (clays and fines), break loose weak inclusions or attached particles of impurities, and break aggregates of clayish material. Two phenomena occur, the particle-particle interaction (impact and rubbing), and the rheological effects of releasing significant amount of fines into the slurry. Therefore, high solids contents are recommended to enhance the particle-particle interactions, which may result in a change in the rheological regime of the system due to the slimes, clays, and fines decreasing the availability of free water. This increases the apparent viscosity of the system up to that of paste consistency resulting in a cushion effect that suppresses scrubbing. Under these conditions, not all fines are release and rejected (deslimed), downstream unit operations being affected by the release of clays, resulting in P2O5 losses."

As the mining industry faces increased challenges with declining ore grades and harder to access deposits, operating mine sites in an environmentally responsible and economically viable manner will require innovations that improve efficiency in energy logistics, and automation. Technological advancements in mining have been successful primarily because of the willingness and capability of these solutions to share information with one another, for example OEM payload systems sending information to Fleet Management Systems, and in turn Fleet Management Systems interfacing to ERP systems. To promote and facilitate the sharing of data, there has been a push towards open standards with initiatives led by organizations like ISO, ISA, EMESRT, and GMG. These efforts are aimed at creating a more collaborative and interoperable environment within the sector. However, when it comes to implementing autonomous solutions, a different trend dominates— closed-stack solutions. These closed stack solutions not only prohibit a mine site from selecting best-of-breed solutions, by blocking the competition from entering the market, they also risk slowing innovation that could help overcome the challenges the mining industry faces. Open Autonomy, an internationally published standard that allows any FMS to work with any Autonomous solution, breaks this closed-stack approach and invites competition from other industries. This competition comprises of autonomous suppliers from other industries and manufacturers of smaller, civil-sized haul trucks. The availability and capabilities of these smaller-sized autonomous haul trucks will help tackle the challenges of responsibly and economically mining lower quality ore grades and mining harder to access deposits.

INTRODUCTION The passage of Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA/Superfund) as well as the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and state laws, have placed added regulatory pressures on the mining industry. These laws which focus on the regulation of hazardous substances and wastes for the protection of the public health and welfare and the environment, present the potential for tremendous financial impacts and liabilities on existing mine operators and owners and/or potential mine operators/owners. This paper takes a brief look at these laws and presents an environmental audit procedure to identify environmental liabilities prior to mine land transactions. The environmental audit approach presented is an overview of the procedures that could be used to document, evaluate and inventory existing and/or potential environmental concerns. This audit procedure can be applied to developed or undeveloped properties and at active or inactive mining sites. REGULATORY OVERVIEW Mining environmental liabilities have been addressed in RCRA, Superfund, the Clean Air Act (CAA) and the Clean Water Act (CWA). Even though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has determined that mining wastes will be treated as solid wastes under RCRA and not as hazardous wastes, these wastes could still bring about a great deal of financial liability under Superfund. The catch is if the mine wastes generated contain hazardous substances such as the heavy metals arsenic, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, zinc and others as well as cyanide. Thus, it is not only important for a mine operator/owner or a potential mine operator/owner to know if the mine wastes generated are hazardous, but it is important to know if the wastes contain hazardous substances. Following is a brief overview of RCRA and Superfund and their potential implications. RCRA RCRA, which provides the basis for the regulation of solid and hazardous wastes, is applicable to active mining and milling sites. Within RCRA the definition of a hazardous waste is provided. This definition applies to owners and operators of mining and milling sites if the operator has stored, disposed or treated hazardous wastes on-site. If this is the case and if strict process control and waste management activities are not adhered to, environmental liabilities may be associated with the site. Superfund The 1980 Superfund law can be applicable to inactive mining sites or to inactive sections of an active facility. The provisions of Superfund call for the regulation of hazardous wastes and hazardous sub- stances disposal and release not only by the existing owner, but also for any previous owner. This concept of joint and several liability means that one party, as among many, can be held totally responsible for the costs of hazardous waste cleanup (Haller, 1987). Furthermore, liabilities under Superfund have also been applied back to past acts; thus, several mining properties, active or inactive prior to the 1980 Superfund law, are at risk of being placed on the EPA&apos;s National Priority List (NPL) for cleanup. Last years amendments to Superfund, known as the Superfund Reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), provided some significant developments for the mining industry. The major requirement of the amendments as it pertains to owners or operators of mining sites is that the EPA must revise its present Hazard Ranking System (HRS). This is important be- cause in most cases the primary reason for several mining sites having been included on the NPL was due to the large volume of wastes generated. As is typical at most mining sites, large volumes of low toxicity wastes are generated and the current HRS model prejudices against this. It should be noted that this provision only applies to sites that are not already on the NPL or have not been proposed for inclusion on the list.

5.1 TECHNOLOGY FOR INJECTING GROUT INTO BOREHOLES The grouting of fractured rock aquifers is carried out in separate stopes&apos; whose size is determined by the hydro¬stratigraphy and the hydrogeologic properties of the rocks. The number of grouting stopes required depends on the number of intervals in the hydrogeological section. Each grouting stope can include one or several aquifers. Com¬bining several water-producing strata into one stope is pos¬sible only when the values of their permeability coefficients are very similar. In order to achieve efficiency, as many aquifers as possible are included in each stope. In practice, the length of a grouting stope in a borehole usually ranges within 10 to 40 m, but occasionally up to 100 m or more. When conducting grouting operations through boreholes drilled from the face of underground workings, the stope&apos;s size can be determined by the thick¬ness of each fractured zone (fault) or by the length of the hole if the entire rock is fractured. Injecting grout into separate intervals of fractured rock can be done from the bottom to the top with ascending stopes or from the top to the bottom with descending stopes. Injection from bottom to top is always preferred. Injection also can be accomplished in separate fractured permeable horizons in the section. The STG integrated grouting method is based on the use of packer and injection equipment and technological schemes that facilitate injection in highly isolated fractured aquifers. For this purpose STG has developed a standard series of packers. 5.1.1 INJECTING GROUT THROUGH BOREHOLES DRILLED FROM THE SURFACE Grout can be injected according to one of four techno¬logical schemes depending on the depth of the fractured aquifers, their hydrogeologic properties and the availability of grout injection equipment if the area is remote (Fig. 43). In the first and most preferred technological scheme (1), the grout is injected from the bottom up with ascending stopes. When this scheme is employed, grouting holes are drilled to the entire projected depth based on the field investigations injection tubes is installed above the top of the first hydrostratigraphic unit to be grouted. This scheme al¬lows the grout to be injected only into the permeable stra¬tum or strata isolated by the packer near the bottom of the hole; it precludes the need to clean or redrill the hole before injecting grout into the next overlying stope. This ascending stope scheme is preferred because of its simplicity and ef¬ficiency. It is used in most of the grouting of saturated fractured rock for the purpose of isolating aquifers while excavating deep mine shafts in the USSR. The second technological scheme (II in Fig. 43) injects the grout in sequence from top to bottom with descending stopes. Injection under this scheme is accomplished through the hermetically-sealed mouth of the hole. It is most advis¬able to grout with descending stopes in saturated fractured rock wherein the aquifers constitute thick networks of frac¬tures. Under these conditions it is practically impossible to drill a grout hole to the entire depth of the underground workings due to the large production rate of ground water. In conducting isolation operations with descending stopes, additional work (relative to ascending stopes) is necessary to drill out the grout in order to create and inject the next stope. As a result, the total amount of drilling required to drill out grout can even exceed the volume of drilling of original rock. Consequently it is advisable to use this inefficient scheme only for injecting grout into holes that contain prolific frac¬tured aquifers at depths less than 150 to 200 m. The third and fourth technological schemes (III and IV in Fig. 43) are used in the selective grouting of separate aquifers. For example, these methods would be applied when a grout hole is drilled to its entire depth, wherein grouting of the upper aquifers must be done first so that the sinking of the first shaft can begin prior to deeper grouting. The third technological scheme is used for the selective injection of grout into an aquifer with a thickness of up to 5 m. For this work the DAU-1-2 removable dual packer is installed. It is lowered into the borehole on an injection pipeline. For aquifers with thicknesses of more then 5 m, the selective injection of the grout is carried out according to the fourth technological scheme; a combination of the DAU-2 hydrodynamic plug and the DAU-1 packing device is used. In order to implement this injection scheme, the DAU-2 hydro-dynamic plug is installed at the bottom of the fractured aquifer and the DAU-1 packer is installed at the top of the aquifer.

The high costs and environmental problems associated with making iron and steel in the United states is driving the development of new technologies to replace the blast furnace. A prototype reactor incorporating rocket technology was designed and built. This rapid rate reactor was operated successfully and consistently made iron metal. Minus 32s-mesh magnetite particles could be reduced to iron metal in less than 50 ms in a high temperature flow through reactor. Iron product was recovered inside the reactor and in a downstream cyclonic separator. The results of typical operation and how parametric changes affected the reduction of iron ore concentrates are discussed.

This, report presents correlative data on ash and sulfur forms for Pittsburgh seam coal from Greene County, Pa. Prediction equations were developed for sulfur form distributions and washability characteristics. The equations developed were evaluated with an independent set of exploration core samples. It was demonstrated-that both sulfur distributions and washability characteristic&apos;s can be predicted from exploration core data ahead of mining. This information can improve the efficiency of selective mining techniques for the production of a uniform metallurgical coal product.

Processing bauxite and clay ores to reduce Iron content to levels low enough for the ores to be suitable raw materials for such products as refractories and abrasives has long been regarded as a diffi9ult problem. Standard magnetic separation processing of the untreated ore has been attempted by previous investigators with only limited success due to the finely divided state and weak magnetic susceptibility of the iron minerals (hematite, geothite, etc.) present in these ores. The new process described in this paper consists of calcining the finely crushed ore at 500 to 800 C and then reducing (with hydrogen, carbon monoxide, etc.) the iron oxides present to magnetite or elemental Iron. The magnetic susceptibility of iron in these forms is enhanced 40-to 100-fold over that of hematitie and is readily removed by simple magnetic separation. Starting with a 2.7% Fe20s Alabama bauxite ore, a 1.5% Fe20s product was produced in one pass through a Davis tube magnetic separator with 95 + % recovery of the iron-free bauxite fraction and a 20% Fe20a magnetic product. These findings suggest that with the addition of light calcination, reduction and magnetic separation steps to the conventional refractory grain production process, the large U.S. reserves of high-iron bauxites could be used.

A numerical simulation study is carried out for assessment of stability of coal pillars having dirt bands by varying its size and depths. Physico-mechanical properties of dirt bands including thickness and its position in pillar system are varied in the simulation study. Results of the simulation study are correlated with the available empirical approaches of pillar strength are validated with field observations. It is observed that the presence of weak dirt bands significantly influences the strength of pillar. An attempt is made to develop correction factor for the available empirical approaches, which are developed without considering the weak dirt bands in pillar system. The findings of the study will be helpful for suitable design of different size of coal pillars at different depths and stages of depillaring operations.

"Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) is an occupational lung disease caused by chronic exposure to respirable mine dust. After decades of steady decline, CWP incidence appears to be on the rise since the mid-1990s, particularly in some regions of Appalachia. Alarmingly, many of these cases have rapidly progressed to the most advanced form of CWP, referred to as Progressive Massive Fibrosis (PMF). Most of what is currently understood about respirable mine dust has been gleaned from routine regulatory monitoring, which tracks total mass concentration of respirable dust (mg/m3) and, less frequently, silica mass content. This paper focuses on the use of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as a way to provide basic characterization of the whole composition of the dust, allowing it to be classified into three mass fractions – coal, carbonate, and non-carbonate minerals. TGA was conducted on 59 dust samples collected by miners from eight coal mines in central Appalachia, and the results are discussed in terms of differences between mines, regions, and primary occupations. Consistent with prior results on area dust samples from some of the same mines, results of the personal samples generally show that the coal mass fraction of the dust is relatively low. Carbonate and non-carbonate minerals thus tend to make up the bulk of the dust mass, and vary across occupations and specific mines. INTRODUCTION After nearly four decades of decline, the prevalence of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP, or “black lung”) in the US has been on the rise since the mid-1990s (Laney et al., 2014; Laney et al., 2010; Suarthana et al., 2011; Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016). Particularly alarming is the number of cases of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF), which is the most advanced form of the disease (Pollock et al., 2010; Antao et al., 2005; Blackley et al., 2016; Laney et al., 2017). A recent study by Laney et al. (2017) observed 192 US coal miners participating in the Coal Workers’ Health Surveillance Program (CWHSP) who had been diagnosed with PMF since 2000. Of the 163 (85%) that had a normal radiograph on file to use as a baseline, 27 (17%) of these individuals had progressed from a normal radiograph to PMF diagnosis in less than 10 years. Moreover, 162 (84%) of the individuals in that study worked in KY, WV or VA, and 169 (88%) had only ever mined underground. Blackley et al. (2016) also reported on a group of 60 PMF cases that were discovered by a single black lung clinic in eastern KY. Since seeking care at such clinics and participation in the CWHSP are voluntary, and could be influenced by a number of factors, these recent reports may well overestimate the degree of resurgence in severe disease (i.e., versus disease that was previously under-reported). Even so, they highlight a critical need to better understand the cause(s) of disease development and progression – such that effective interventions can be devised."

Robotics is topical for mining owing to deterioration of miner&apos;s safety as a depth of winning, limited functions of traditional mechanization and automation, rise of miner&apos;s labor cost. Mining robot is an autonomous mining machine with a free programmable control that provides a multifunctional use of working head. After analysis of world publications the database “Technological applications of robotics in mining" has been built. In most cases robots are suggested for imitation of miner&apos;s motions. The following shapes of robotics had been classified for mining: technological robot as a flexible controlled mining machine, remote manipulator, mine rescue robot. The problems of both non-repeated environment recognition and telepresence without direct visibility must be solved. The more a robots integration is the less investments and the more efficiency are. Computer simulation of robotics-based mining is founded on a base of 6 robots functional models, Petri nets and library of 30 robotized technologies. There are some examples of mine robotization in the paper.

Cleaning of low-rank coals can have several meanings, depending upon the definitions of the terms "low rank" and "cleaning." In general, low-rank coals would be lignite or subbituminous according to the ASTM classification. For the purposes of this summary, cleaning is defined to be any process which materially reduces the proportion of inert material in the coal. For low-rank coals, this often means a reduction in moisture content since moisture is the major inert component in these coals. A brief discussion of conventional cleaning processes is included, as is an extensive reference list.
