The area of Canada with which we are here concerned consists of Yukon Territory and Northern British Columbia. Generally it lies west of the coastal mountain range and access to the sea can be gained at only selected points which are relatively few. It is served by the Alaska Highway as well as a provincial and territorial system of roads permitting transport of mining products to Whitehorse in Yukon Territory. This town it the northern terminus of the White Pass and Yukon Route, which system provides a rail service between Whitehorse and Skagway, Alaska a distance of 110 miles, and thence to Vancouver, British Columbia, by the coastal Motor Vessel C. J. Rogers, a distance of an additional 890 miles. At present the service between Vancouver, B.C. and Whitehorse, Y. T. is on a fourteen day basis. The coastal vessel, capable of carrying 3,200 tons of cargo, was specially designed and built in 1955 for handling containerized cargo and general cargo northbound, and containerized and palletized asbestos fibre, and palletized lead and zinc concentrates southbound.

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Wet-drum magnetic separators are used extensively for upgrading iron ore and for magnetite recovery in dense-medium circuits. In this study the performance of a continuous, laboratory wet-drum magnetic separator was evaluated with and without the application of ultrasonic energy when processing dense medium slurries. Test variables included magnetic-to-nonmagnetic ratio, solids concentration, and nonmagnetic materials. The results indicate that under certain conditions, the purity of the magnetic material increased after ultrasonic treatment.

The Vulture mine near Wickenburg, Arizona was a major gold producer from 1863 to 1942, having yielded about 11t(12.1 st) Au and 8t (8.8st) Ag. Gold occurs as coarse native metal and electrum in quartz veins and also finely dis¬seminated within a quartz monzonite sill and its silicified wall rock. The sill is semi-conformable within a Proterozoic volcaniclastic-dominated sequence, all dipping north about 35°. Early mining focused on the vein-hosted gold, particularly in the immediate hanging wall and footwall of the sill. Later efforts included some open-pit mining of the outcropping sill and adjacent altered and mineralized rock. Two sets of post-mineral faults have complicated the orebody geometry. The sill is a 350 m (1148 ft) long apophysis from a quartz mozonite stock to the west of the mine area. The stock has been dated at 85 my and contains abundant lesser gold occurrences in its core and about its margins. The Proterozoic rocks are notably lean in precious metals except where altered in proximity to the Creataceous stock and sill. Circumstances dictate an interpretation of epigenetic mineralization related to the Laramide intrusion.

This paper discusses the evolution of a modeling methodology for explaining price behavior in the aluminum industry. Three generations are described, each utilizing as a foundation a microeconomic stages-of-processing approach. The second generation represents an improvement over the initial version, by incorporating more rigorous specifications of energy cost, and market strength (demand-supply balance) as well as endogenous treatment of market strength. International linkages across prices, costs, and markets, are the major extensions in the third generation. The discussion covers theoretical considerations, data problems and limitations, and model specifications. Simulation and forecasting properties of the models are also addressed.

INTRODUCTION Newmont Gold Company's Rain operations are located in Elko County, Nevada, approximately 9 miles southeast of the Town of Carlin.The property was submitted to Newmont Exploration Limited in 1979 and underwent development drilling over the course of the next four years, culminating in the completion of a project feasibility study in October 1986. Initial project scope included development of an open pit mine, an 815,000 DSTPY heap leach, a 572,000 DSTPY mill (Mill No. 3), and associated support facilities. Approval to proceed was given by Newmont Gold Company management in June 1987. Detailed engineering began in early July, followed immediately thereafter by procurement of major equipment components through various second hand sources. PROJECT DESIGN Keep It Simple In early August, Newmont Mining Corporation, parent company of Newmont Gold Company, became the takeover target of an "investor" group headed by T. Boone Pickens. Details of the ensuing events have been well documented by the press; suffice to say their impact on this project was material and required immediate flowsheet changes. Project design throughputs were increased to 1,000,000 DSTPY and 760,000 DSTPY for the heap leach and mill, respectively, in mid- September. These changes caused major project headaches as all general arrangement drawings had been approved and structural steel as well as concrete contracts were in place. Additionally, ground breaking was to commence in two weeks time! Rain project management assembled shortly after the announced changes, to devise an engineering and construction strategy capable of handling these new business conditions. The project had been justified using a gold price of $325 per ounce with a forecasted overall cash cost per ounce of $230. Hence, strict control of capital expenditures was necessary to maintain development economics. Mill start-up had also been moved forward one month, to August 1, 1988. To meet an already ambitious schedule, construction techniques needed to be simple and proven as most of the facilities were planned for erection during winter at a site with design criteria of -40F and 90 mile per hour winds. Perhaps the most critical factor requiring consideration was that of personnel. Newmont Gold's revised business plan called for corporate-wide production increases from 587,000 ounces per year in 1987, to 1,400,000 ounces by mid- 1989. Labor requirements were forecasted to grow from 900 employees to over 2,100. This fact, in combination with the rapid growth of Nevada's gold industry, led to the expectation that turnover of operating personnel would be extremely high. It was concluded that, to meet cost, time, and operational goals, the necessary strategy could be succinctly put - "Keep It Simple." This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.

The block cutting machine is one of the most important noise sources in the stone processing factories. In this study, the assessability of the noise from the block cutting machines in the stone processing factories using the P-wave velocity was investigated. The noise levels of some block cutting machines were firstly measured during the cutting of the three different rocks. Then, core samples of the same rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. A conversion factor was obtained by dividing the site noise levels by the laboratory noise levels. Then, thirty seven different rocks were cut by an automatic cutting machine in the laboratory and noise levels were measured. The P-wave velocity of rock samples were also measured in the laboratory. A strong relation between the laboratory noise levels and the P-wave velocity was found. The noise level from the block cutting machines can be assessed using the derived relation and the conversion factor.

Kennecott Utah Copper began a modernization program in 1986 that was aimed at expanding and updating mining and ore process facilities at the company’s Bingham Canyon copper mine and concentrator near Salt Lake City, UT. Major components of the project included installation of an in-pit crusher, a transfer conveying system and a new ore concentrator with a design capacity of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd). The Copperton concentrator was commissioned in February 1988. The grinding circuit is one of its principal features. It consists of three identical lines, each with a 10.4-m- (34-ft-) diam x 4.6-m- (15-ft-) long semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill and two 5.5-m- (18-ft-) diam x 8.6- (28-ft-) long ball mills. The SAG mills are driven by two 4.5-MW (each) (6000-hp) variable- speed dc motors through a clutch-pinion gear-ring gear assembly. The ball mills are driven by 4.1-MW (5500-hp) synchronous motors coupled through a typical clutch-pinion gear-ring gear system.

Most accidents are the result of risk taking. They can happen anywhere. Our coal industry categorizes accidents by type, occupation, commodity, age, every way you can imagine. We now know, how many were injured and when, for all the different types of accidents. We have ask ourselves many times, why are we having accidents, how can we stop the accidents and fatals in our industry? Present numbers and projections do not show that this will happen. Serious accidents can result in fatalities. Fatal accident can be prevented, and the coal industry can achieve zero fatalities. How soon this happens, depends on a great number of factors. I will discuss accidents and reasons for us having accidents in an attempt to get to the root causes. The historical perspective will be touched on, and the risk and analysis of accidents will be probed.

Today the standard method for grinding ore is the wet process. This is mainly due to the fact that the downstream process is wet and considering the total circuit dry grinding is not the most eco­nomical method for the comminution of the ore. Presently in gold ore processing dry grinding is only applied in cases where whole ore roasting is required downstream from the milling plant or if organic carbonaceous matters and sulfides are the primary reasons for the refractoriness. Since dry ore can be fed to the roaster, a dry grinding mill can advantageously be applied. In cases where d1y grinding could be applied advantageously for instance if the ore contains water soluble material and wet grinding is not possible there are serious concerns prevailing within the industty against this technology due to several reasons. Besides of the aspects as discussed later in this paper, there are several plants in operation with little success and considerable operational prob­lems. The reasons for this often lie in the fact that the several com­ponents of such a plant are bought from independent sources with­out considering the system requirements. It is essential that the dry grinding plants require accurate design between drying, pneumatic transport and grinding of the ore in the circuit. This paper will address some of these concerns raised in the industiy from a mill vendor's view along with discussing the development for the selection and configuration of the various dty grinding circuits.

Sustainability of energy supplies has been an issue of general interest for a long time. Whilst in the past the continuous productive use of natural commodities was in the fore, its compatibility with the environment and climate and ultimately also social aspects have recently gained more and more attention. Today many discussions focus on the climate compatibility of individual options to act. Fossil fuels, in particular coal and lignite, are generally challenged because coal use makes a significant contribution to global man-made CO2 emissions. The drastic increase in the consumption of fossil fuels is not explained by the fact that coal utilisation technologies are not or cannot be sustainable but rather by the growing world population and the endeavours numerous national economies trying to catch up economically. Coal is the world’s No. 1 fuel and, in the view of many experts, will keep this position also in the foreseeable future. The access to its deposits plays a significant role for the economies of the emerging countries. Consequently the aspects of energy security and economic efficiency need to be considered at eye level with climate compatibility. In Germany, however, the public acceptance of fossil fuels and of large industrial projects is in the focus of attention.

Hydraulic separators are commonly used for particle size classification and gravity concentration of minerals and coal. Unfortunately, the efficiency of these processes can be quite low due to poor equipment design and variations in feed consistency. To help alleviate these problems, an industry-driven R&D program has been undertaken to develop a new generation of hydraulic separators that are more efficient and less costly to operate and maintain. Two of the most promising technologies, the CrossFlow and HydroFloat separators, have now been tested at industrial sites. The data obtained from these sites have been used to illustrate the potential performance improvements that can be realized through the application of these high-efficiency separators.

Introduction The Energy Metals Corporation (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin including the JAB Property, one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope Uranium Project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report has been completed for the JAB property. This report estimates total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 3,555,022 pounds U3O8 contained in 2,400,875 tons at an average grade of 0.073 % U3O8 at a .25 GT cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB Property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42o 14’ North and Longitude 108o 00’ West (Figure 1, Location Map). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming State mineral leases comprising approximately 2,100 acres.

The Silver Line Phase III Project is the final one mile underground segment of the new Bus Rapid Transit in downtown Boston. The project is expected to significantly reduce existing and anticipated traffic congestion. The twin one-lane tunnels and two station platforms will be built by NATM in Boston saturated soft clay, sand and till layers in proximity to several historical buildings, underpinning two existing cut and cover subway stations and several major utilities in densely built urban area. This paper presents the analysis and design of the NATM tunnels and stations detailing the excavation sequence and support system and various ground improvement and pre-support techniques used in the preliminary and final design of the project

The ground forces generated by a properly installed and tensioned mine roof truss assembly can provide permanent mine roof support, even in severe ground conditions, either by direct suspension of the rock loads within the potential failure zone above the mine opening or indirect reinforcement of the natural rock arch that tends to form within the immediate mine roof. Notable advancements in mine roof truss support systems hardware and design technology have occurred since the introduction of the in situ mine roof truss concept for permanent mine roof support in 1966. The systematic installation of mine roof truss support systems has proven to be a very effective method of mine roof control room and pillar mines under a wide variety of ground conditions, even in areas otherwise considered unmineable because of severe roof control problems. Properly designed mine roof truss systems have also been used for permanent support of mine slopes and haulage tunnels.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. Following a disaster in a mine, it is important to understand the state of the mine damage immediately with limited information. Computational fluid dynamics can be used to simulate and ascertain information about the state of ventilation controls inside a mine. This paper describes a simulation of tracer gas distribution in an experimental mine with the ventilation controls in various states. Tracer gas measurements were taken in the lab experimental apparatus, and used to validate the numerical model. The distribution of the tracer gas, together with the ventilation status, was analyzed to understand how the damage to the ventilation system related to the distribution of tracer gases. This study will be used in future research in real mine measurements to compare collected and simulated profiles and determine whether damage to the ventilation system has been incurred during an emergency situation, the nature of the damage and the general location of the damage.

Low-flow reactive-transport processes in Wightman Fork downstream of the Summitville Mine, south-central Colorado were simulated using the OTIS and OTEQ solute-transport models. The simulation was calibrated using data from a synoptic study conducted during October, 1998. Discharge over the 8-km reach from just below the mine site to the Alamosa River confluence ranged from 0.077 to 0.17 m3/s; travel time was 10.7 hours; pH ranged from 4.6 to 5.7. Simulations revealed that mass balance for SO4 was maintained, and that pH, Fe, and Al were non-conservative. Simulations allowing hydrous ferric and aluminum oxide or hydroxysulfate precipitation matched observed water quality conditions more closely than simulations without precipitation.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991; 1994). In this study, Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline) have been selected to investigate their abilities to undergo geopolymerization. The interaction between alkali metals present in the alkali-feldspars and alkali metal cations contained in alkaline solution during geopolymerization has also been studied. It has been found that both albite and microcline can be applied in geopolymerization to produce geopolymers with a high compressive strength. Although the dissolution of M-feldspar (where M = Na and/or K) in concentrated MOH solution is inhibited when the alkali metal cations of the alkaline solution differ from the alkali metals structured in M-feldspar, the resulting geopolymers are found to demonstrate a higher compressive strength. Moreover, a proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and a higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly increase the ultimate compressive strength of the geopolymers.
