The copper catalyzed gold oxidation and reduction mechanisms in ammonium thiosulfate solution were investigated by Eh-pH diagram based on the optimum reagent combination for 60 mass% -75 µm silicate ore at 16g/t Au with the maximum gold extraction of 92% and the minimum ammonium thiosulfate consumption of 23 kg/t-ore for 24 hour’s leaching at ambient temperature. The gold recovery by cementation was nearly 100% by Zn and Al powders at Metal/Au mass ratio of 30, and around 95% by Cu powder at Cu/Au+ mass ratio of 50. In order to oxidize the gold efficiently with the less thiosulfate consumption, the stable region of [Cu(NH3)4]2+ should be as wide as possible in the region, where [Cu(S2O3)2]3- was more stable than [Cu(NH3)2]+. In order to reduce gold from the pregnant solution with the less metal powder’s (Zn, Cu, Al) consumption, the stable region of [Cu(S2O3)2]3- should be wider than [Cu(NH3)2]+ on copper precipitation. Zinc powder may recover gold more efficiently than copper powder with the similar trend on the effect of ammonia, copper and thiosulfate. However, the large amount of copper will be co-precipitated along with gold since the stability of zinc ammine and thiosulfate complexes are higher than that of copper’s. Aluminium may reduce gold efficiently at higher thiosulfate concentration and pH. These results were confirmed and compared with the optimum reagent combination for finer grind sample at 100 mass% -75 µm, which is the optimum ore size for the standard cyanidation at 1.0 g/ l NaCN to obtain about 95% gold extraction. The optimum reagent combination was concluded as 0.5 mol/l NH4OH, 0.0001 mol/l CuSO4*5H2O and 0.05 mol/l (NH4)2S2O3 with the result of 94% gold extraction and 3kg/t-ore of ammonium thiosulfate consumption. Gold and copper stabilities were well agreed with the result of coarser grind ore thermodynamically. The lower reagent combination will reduce gold oxidation power, but significantly minimize the reagent consumption. From this pregnant solution, nearly 100% of gold was successfully recovered by zinc precipitation at Zn/Au+ mass ratio of 30. Aluminium and copper precipitations resulted in less than 40% of gold recovery at Metal/Gold mass ratio of 30. The reagent consumption cost on this lower reagent combination followed by zinc precipitation was $1.6/t-ore, while the cyanidation was $3.1/t-ore. Thiosulfate oxidation mechanism indicated the similarity to Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction.

The typical tunnel boring machine in use on today's tunnel project uses 15'2-inch diameter cutters at a nominal load of 45 kips per cutter. The cutterhead rotates at a speed of 120 over D revolutions per minute where D is the cutterhead diameter in feet. The typical machine operates about 50 percent of the time. Delivery of a new machine takes 12 to 15 months. The TBM is a specialized tool and not applicable to all jobs. There is a range of job conditions that limit the economic use of a TBM. The machine should provide a thrust per cutter at least twice the compressive strength of rock in psi and up to three times the rock strength is required if in "granitic rocks." The rock strength in psi must be at least three times the cover above the tunnel in feet or the machine may stick. For example, 2,500 feet of cover requires at least 7,500 psi rock to avoid problems. When the RQD's over a significant distance of the project are less than 50, the TBM becomes support-bound. When a large percentage of the time is spent waiting while the ground is supported, the TBM cannot perform well (See Figure 1). This problem increased inversely with tunnel diameter. We are finding that increasing the RPM's does not significantly increase progress. The increased RPM results in a substantial decrease in cutter penetration. The explanation for this decrease appears to be vibration, cutterhead drag, or lack of stiffness in the cutterhead (See Figure 2).

Introduction In the design and operation of gravity concentration circuits, the application of process models for spiral concentrators offers significant benefits. A substantial amount of work has been produced over the last 30 years in the field of modeling the metallurgical performance of spiral concentrators. It is not the aim of this contribution to add to the refinement of modeling technique but to share some of the experiences and potential improvements which can be achieved in a relatively simple way. The design of spiral circuits usually requires extensive testing. This is often conducted in batch operation only, either due to lack of suitable continuous testing facilities, the unavailability of sufficient quantities of sample, or other constraints. Typical problems arising during circuit development from batch testwork are the extrapolation of results to different feed conditions, and resolving of internal recycles. Model selection and development The classic approaches in spiral modeling technique range from fundamental fluid dynamics, based on the Navier-Stokes equations in combination with expressions for local slurry properties, to fully empirical and statistical models. With the initial objective of developing an in-house tool for gravity circuit optimization and development, mathematical model types from each category, available either commercially or in the published literature, were evaluated. Model selection For the desired purpose, an approach proposed by Holland-Batt (1990) was found suitable, which was adopted and modified. Holland-Batt reported that the shape of release curves in spiral applications could be described by a combination of a linear function in the initial recovery zone, and a power law function outside this zone. Newmont Mining’s Ahafo Mine is located in Ghana approximately 300 km (190 miles) northwest of the capital city of Accra in the Brong-Ahafo region. The nearest city is Sunyani, located 45 km (28 miles) to the north. The Ahafo Mine will process ore from seven major pits that extend along a 40-km (25-mile) strike. Four pits are in the south and three pits are in the north. The resource is currently stated at 373 t (12 million oz). But it still has the potential for growth both from new discoveries and the development of underground operations.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research at a Pittsburgh Coalbed longwall mine to evaluate and optimize bleeder ventilation and gob gas venthole longwall methane control systems. Gas flow into these two methane control systems was investigated using a combination of Sulphur Hexafluoride (SF6)tracer gas studies and gob venthole pressure monitoring experiments. The insights gained from this research has facilitated the development of a longwall subsided strata methane control system conceptual model. This model provides the basis for design suggestions to increase the efficiency of the gob gas venthole system to permit the bleeder ventilation system to become a "safety net" for methane control.

The Silver Peak Range North Wilderness Study Area was deleted from the list of US Bureau of Land Management lands in Nevada to be considered for wilderness designation. This decision was based in part on the US Bureau of Mines mineral investigation of the wilderness study area which found indications of precious- and base-metal-resources. The study area lies between the Silver Peak and Dyer mining districts of west-central Nevada. The Bureau examined 13 mineralized sites, most of which were previously unknown and unclaimed. These sites are along two zones that cross the study area from the Silver Peak mining district to the Dyer mining district. The two zones transect a volcanic center of fractured and altered rocks that contain epithermal veins of quartz and calcite with gold, silver, and base-metals. At the surface, these veins are poorly defined. Exposures of the more than forty veins examined were as thick as 17 ft and as long as 1000 ft. Samples from these veins contained significant amounts of precious- and base-metals-as much as 0.02 oz per ton gold, 2.1 oz per ton silver, 1.0% copper, 2.6% lead and 0.4 % zinc. No vein large enough or of high enough grade to be classified a mineral resource was disclosed by the sample data. However, most do have indications of precious- and base-metal-resources at depth. Subsurface exploration of some of the veins is recommended.

The western phosphate field, one of the United States' great mineral resources, lies within the western states of Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. This Permian sedimentary deposit has been known since the turn of the century and since the 1920's has been mined for its phosphate content. Isolation from markets and relatively high mining costs have restricted development as compared to eastern United States deposits, but nevertheless a significant western phosphate industry has developed. Geographically the deposit covers an enormous area of about 337 000 km2 (130 000 sq miles). It covers Idaho from Pocatello east- ward, western Wyoming to the eastern flank of the Wind River mountains, and extends well into southwestern Montana and into a large area of northeastern Utah north of the Uinta Basin and east of the Salt Lake valley.

INTRODUCTION The inherent errors of simple passive track detectors /SPTD/ used for estimation of exposure to the radon daughters /RnDP/ amount to about 30% /Do75/ while for active detectors only reach about 3 - 4% /Ph78, Du79/. The large error inherent in SPTD is the result of strong dependence of its calibration coefficient on the equilibrium Rn RnDP in the vicinity of detector /0r80/. Nevertheless the SPTD shows many advantages and seems to be very useful for to the estimation of individual exposure of miners to RnDP /Do81a/. For this reason the investigations are undertaken to improve SPTD so that it might provide information about the equilibrium Rn : RnDP during exposure. If the equilibrium would be known then one could use a suitable calibration coefficient yielding a better precision of the measurement. So far, some investigations of the improved type of SPTD have been conducted. One was based on the concept of using the so called diffusion barrier permitting to differentiate the tracks originating from Rn and RnDP /Fr77/. Such improved detector has been named a passive differentiating track detector /PDTD/. However, own investigations have shown /Do81b/ that this type of detector cannot provide precise informations about equilibrium Rn : RnDP. For this reason the investigations of the new idea of PDTD have been carried out. The new model presented below is based on the use of the absorbers of alpha particles. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS The first variant of the concept is as follows: The differentiating detector consists of two portions of detective foil /track detector/ but only one is covered with an aluminium absorber. Thickness of the absorber is carefully selected so that only RaC' particles /7.7 MeV/ can pass the barrier. The second portion of the detective foil records all alpha particles originated from Rn and RnDP i.e. works like a SPTD. The scheme of such a detector, the so called two-fields passive differentiating track detector /PDTD-2/ is shown in the Fig. 1. It is possible to introduce a parameter that can characterize the equilibrium Rn RnDP, namely, the so called track density ratio /TDR/. From the Brightwater Conveyance System in Seattle to the Second Narrows Water Supply Tunnel in Vancouver, BC, the design and construction of deep-lying tunnels in the Pacific Northwest often require the incorporation of deep portal shafts. Alluvium overlying marine and glacial deposits combined with the high regional seismicity is the common geologic setting. The latest example illustrating the development of shaft design for this scenario is the 40-m-deep shafts of the Annacis Island Wastewater Treatment Plant New Outfall System. The main components of the shafts include the initial lining, providing the excavation support system to be used for launching and receiving a 5-m-diameter TBM; and the final lining, designed to withstand all static and seismic loads and to remain viable for the intended design life. This paper presents design and construction considerations for these shafts against the background of and lessons learned from past project experiences.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in effort put to tracking progress toward sustainability. Many aspects of society are participating in this “movement” including mining. The drivers are diverse and include evolving ideas in business and public administration as well as concerns for human well-being, community robustness, environmental integrity, and overall social and ethical responsibility. The scale in question varies greatly from local to global. For the most part, there has been a pre-occupation with developing discrete measurable signals. This paper argues that the overwhelming focus on the quantitative is ill-advised and that a more effective approach is to bring together the best of both quantitative and qualitative. The mining industry in particular is well-placed to affect this shift and reap the associated benefits.

Six Sigma is a methodology that uses a structured and disciplined approach to improve process performance (higher throughput, better recovery, lower cost, shorter cycle time, etc.). Specially trained people called “black belts” lead and manage Six Sigma projects. Black belts, with assistance from their team, ensure that projects follow the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, implement and control) process phases. Timely completion of each project, with measurable deliverables, is key to Six Sigma’s significant financial success. Implementation of Six Sigma has been growing in recent years in a wide range of industries. The heavy mineral industry, like many other industries, could benefit from what Six Sigma has to offer. Specific Six Sigma project examples are included from DuPont’s Heavy Mineral Production Plant in Florida.

Many underground projects now include preparation of a Risk Register through planning and design as a tool for project and risk management. There is still significant discussion within the industry as to whether and how to best present the Risk Register through the bidding process and the construction phase of a project. While the ITIG Code of Practice for Risk Management of Tunnel Works recommends this approach of continuity in risk management procedures, it is silent on the specifics of how this should be achieved. In 2004, management at Unimin’s Gleason, TN operation began implementing ergonomic interventions specifically targeted to reduce risk of musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs). Together with corporate and site management, Unimin identified work site hazards and began to modify work practices/equipment. Some interventions were relatively simple and were implemented immediately. Others, like improvements to a mobile shredder, were more complex but were eventually resolved through a participatory approach with employees, management, manufacturers and NIOSH. This paper discusses ergonomic interventions that were successfully implemented using a bottom-up approach to reducing the risk of injury.

Ventilation survey using tracer gas measurement is one of the techniques for mine ventilation design, monitoring and investigation of movement of fresh air and contaminants. However, there has been little research into using both tracer gas monitoring and numerical simulation. In this research, tracer gas technique was used for quantitative assessment of airflows through narrow vein shrinkage stopes with various opening shapes and friction factors. SF6 was used as a tracer gas to monitor airflow through three narrow vein shrinkage stopes in order to obtain diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time. The mine ventilation simulator, MIVENA Ver.6, was used to construct the entire ventilation network of the mine to monitor airflows through the stopes. The diffusion concentration curves against elapsed time were simulated with a numerical model. The result shows that the concentration-time curve is unsymmetrical and is skewed to the front of the flow direction. From the results of history-matching between the measured and the simulated curves, volume flow rates of airways and stopes were evaluated. Importantly, the tailing effect of the concentration-time curve between the measured and simulated is greatly improved by reconstructing an equivalent airflow route to represent unused mine openings, dead end drives and other open spaces. Finally, it can be concluded that openings, dead end drives and other open spaces have no relation on flow rates, but affect the airflow quality provided from the inlet portal as shown by tracer gas diffusion characteristics.

Exposure to the microscopic particles in diesel engine exhaust can lead to serious health problems, including the incidence of cancers, heart disease and increased susceptibility to respiratory ailments such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and asthma. In Australia, mining companies and state government authorities are actively responding to this major occupational health and safety issue. Their initiatives place considerable emphasis on routine monitoring of diesel particle matter (DPM) exhaust emissions, both for engine benchmarking and as a part of routine engine maintenance. Implementation strategies follow two complementary paths: determination of individual engines? emission signatures combined with periodic engine re-certification; and co-operatively agreed industry-government engine maintenance programs, which are subject to audit. Both strategies place heavy reliance on real-time measurement of DPM concentrations in engine exhaust, using ruggedized instrumentation, mainly based on laser light scattering photometry. Adding value to this cooperative approach, industry has also collectively funded a government agency to design and manage a database, into which the results of all-routine DPM testing can be uploaded directly by individual mines. This win-win outcome is a great example of how cooperative action between governments and industry can deliver the goods: in this case, a safer working environment, more efficient energy use and the capacity to benchmark performance with industry peers.

Similar to modern day petro-chemical processes, the flotation column is a complete break from the conventional manner of floating on a batch basis in cells. The column has a reputation of being only suited for cleaning applications, particularly that of molybdenum cleaning. The original column, invented and developed by Column Flotation Co. of Canada, Ltd., was developed as a Rougher-Scavenger. Only after proving its capability in this field was cleaning allowed. One rougher-scavenger column in closed circuit with a cleaner column produced better grade and recovery than a conventional cell plant consisting of one stage of roughing, two scavenging and four stages of cell cleaning. Three cleaner columns replaced 13 stages of conventional cell cleaning and resulted in higher grades and recoveries. The gentle countercurrent action of the column itself together with complete automatic control enable this machine to produce such results.

The choice of ventilation schemes in the Northern Mujsky railway tunnel and definition of the nec-essary quantities of air ensuring regulated radiation conditions in the tunnel system has been accomplished. The influence of natural draught on the stability of tunnel ventilation has been estimated. The design of a portal venti-lation gate allowing minimal influence from natural factors is described. The dependence of pressure loss in the sliding ventilation gates on their spanning value of the vehicle tunnel section has been determined. The selection of parameters for an atmospheric air heating system in winter has been carried out. The operation regimes of air heaters, dependent on the temperature of atmospheric air, have been established.

The molecular structures of isobutyl xanthate (IBX), diisobutyl dithiophosphate (DIBDTP), O-isobutyl-N-ethyl thionocarbamate (IBETC), O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thionocarbamate (IBECTC) and O-isobutyl-N-ethylcarbonyl thiourea (IBECTU) were fully optimized using density functional theory (DFT) at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d,p) level with the integral equation formalism for the polarizable continuum model (IEF-PCM) in the aqueous phases. The effects of the polar groups in these thiol molecules on their collecting performances were determined by the energies and compositions of frontier molecular orbitals and the atomic charge values. Our results indicate that the sulfur atom(s) in IBX, DIBDTP, IBETC, IBECTC, or IBECTU molecule is the centre of reactivity. And the collecting abilities of these reagents for copper sulfide minerals follow the order as: IBX > IBECTU ? DIBDTP ? IBECTC > IBETC, and the order of their selectivities against pyrite is suggested as: IBX < DIBDTP < IBETC < IBECTU < IBECTC. The theoretical analysis provides an insight into the collecting powers of these collectors, and offers an atomic scale approach to understand the experimental data available in the literature. The development of technologies to improve mining and mineral processing is an ongoing process. These new technologies are the result of the industry’s drive to lower costs and improve productivity. Many technical conferences allow mining industry professionals to learn about these new technologies and possibly implement them in their own operations. In early November 2005, The 14th symposium on Mine Planning and Equipment Selection (MPES) was held in Banff, Alberta. It was jointly held with the Fifth International Conference on Computer Applications in the Minerals Industries (CAMI).
