The research employs logistic regression analysis to reveal the relationship between hearing loss and these factors. The findings suggest that occupational groups and duration of noise exposure significantly affect hearing loss. Miners in production groups and those exposed to noise for 10-14 years have a higher risk. The study concludes that age does not significantly increase the probability of hearing loss.

Past research showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture. Rock dust must disperse with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion. Non-treated rock dust readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while anti-caking treated rock dusts can remain dry. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health contracted the Central Mining Institute in Poland to conduct large-scale testing in their Experimental Mine Barbara to determine if a treated rock dust can be as effective as non-treated rock dust in attenuating or quenching coal dust explosions under the same experimental conditions. INTRODUCTION One of the goals of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is to conduct research to reduce the risk of mine disasters and provide workplace solutions to reduce the risks associated with accumulations of combustible and explosible materials; the most common form of which is the generation of coal dust during the mining process and its subsequent distribution downwind. Dispersible rock dust is a primary defense for preventing coal dust explosion propagation in underground coal mines, and its properties are defined in 30 CFR 75.2. “Pulverized limestone, dolomite, gypsum, anhydrite, shale, adobe, or other inert material, preferably light colored, 100 percent of which will pass through a sieve having 20 meshes per linear inch and 70 percent or more of which will pass through a sieve having 200 meshes per linear inch; the particles of which when wetted and dried will not cohere to form a cake which will not be dispersed into separate particles by a light blast of air; and which does not contain more than 5 percent combustible matter or more than a total of 4 percent free and combined silica (SiO2), or, where the Secretary finds that such silica concentrations are not available, which does not contain more than 5 percent of free and combined silica.” An earlier NIOSH investigation of rock dust revealed two significant concerns with the supply of rock dust to U.S. coal mines: 1) insufficient particles <200 mesh (75 μm) and 2) all rock dusts when wetted and dried formed cakes and were not easily dispersed with a light blast of air (1). Past research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and others showed that bituminous coal dust remains dry and dispersible in the presence of moisture (2). Rock dust must also be dispersible in concert with the coal dust to effectively inert a propagating coal dust explosion (3, 4, 5, 6). Non-treated rock dust, however, readily absorbs moisture, limiting its dispersibility, while a rock dust treated with long-chain fatty acids (such as stearic acid) can remain dry and dispersible. Stearin-treated rock dust has been used in British coal mines (7) and is commonly used in Polish coal mines.

Miami Copper Company began a block-caving operation in 1911 using a gravity mill to separate copper minerals from the Pinal Schist host rock. The tailing was deposited by the upstream method using perimeter launders and spigot valves in six canyons adjacent to the mill until 1932. In 1928 the larger and more distant Solitude tailing pile was developed which by 1932 was receiving all tailing except for upsets. In 1925 Miami Copper converted its gravity mill to flotation which began to produce higher sulfide copper recoveries.

This study is a survey of the current "state-of-the-art" of commercially-available sonar tools to monitor the true shape of man-made cavities within the Hutchinson Salt of south-central Kansas. The work entailed ferreting out the available information, most of which is proprietary in nature; then examining actual existing conditions and arriving at a reasonable scientific evaluation of the method. Our studies were confined to one LPG field and two brine well operations in south-central Kansas. No field testing of any devices was performed, only questioning user firms, and studying cores, logs, and sonar surveys graciously made available by the companies we have contacted. Since these data are still somewhat proprietary, the company participants have asked that their company names be omitted from this presentation.

The economics of open pit mine design are dictated by three basic elements: cut-off grade, stripping ratio and slope angle. Although these elements are functions of a number of independent parameters, they are interrelated through their influence on the overall economics. The optimum slope angle is the most uncertain element to determine, because rock mass properties are difficult to obtain. However, for preliminary estimation, the slope angle can be determined from the relationship between the probability of failure and the safety factor. The economics of the slope selected will depend on a profit versus risk judgment. In this paper, the author will present an actual case of application of this postulate.

"Stainless steel castings are used in abundance in the mineral processing industry. In rotary kiln-based processes, these castings are typically exposed to high loads, corrosive elements, mechanical abrasion and cyclical temperature exposure. In the processing of iron ore pellets, it is typical to use a traveling grate preheater or a straight grate furnace to heat the pellets. Both machines have a conveyor that is mainly comprised of high temperature stainless steel castings. It is these castings which are the focus of this study. The expected life of these castings can be quite short, their cost quite high and the effort to replace them very labor intensive. The goal of this study was to gain a better understanding of the failure modes of these castings. With that basic understanding, modifications to the alloy content could be made to achieve a new operational paradigm. That paradigm could be a cheaper casting, a longer lasting casting or a casting tailored to special operating conditions (for example, highly corrosive gases or sudden temperature shocks). Over the past 4 years, Metso Minerals has sought to achieve a better understanding of the failure modes through modeling, laboratory testing and sampling of used castings from various end-users. In addition, we have tested new alloys in a laboratory setting and also in the field to see how they would perform compared to the existing ""standard casting"". Our testing has revealed interesting data concerning the impact toughness, sigma phase content and formation, chloride attack and other performance attributes of various grades of stainless steel when exposed to cyclical temperatures. Interesting results were also obtained concerning the addition of rare earth elements (Niobium, Boron, etc), nitrogen and manganese to a typical ASTM A297 grade of stainless steel. To date, a few hundred test castings have been installed in iron ore pellet plants worldwide. Many of these test castings have already experienced a year or more of operation with good results.INTRODUCTION Cast stainless steels (ASTM A297 and similar) are a main constituent used in the construction of iron ore pelletizing equipment. A typical straight grate pelletizing machine would contain upwards of 160,000lbs of ASTM A297 Grade HH castings. With a typical casting lasting only two to four years, and a casting costing around $35USD, it is easy to see that the castings are a main contributor to the overall cost of producing the pellets. Grade HH and HI (see chemical composition listed below) became the “go to” materials in the 1960’s and very few changes have been made to this day (the exception being plants that switched to flux pellet production in the 1980’s)."

The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica&apos;s future agricultural productivity. Investigators have attempted to develop lime refractories on a scale for broad applications in the metal and ceramic industries for several decades. There was a flurry of activity in the early to mid-fifties but no commercial developments were forthcoming. The literature of that period yields little information on plant trials. A major factor suppressing past interest in lime has to have been the high success with the application of magnesic and dolomitic materials. These materials, usually tar-bonded or impregnated, have become the refractories success story of the past two decades, especially in BOF applications. It is safe to say that their development and application has essentially plateaued, and that work today is focussed on finding cheaper paths to produce MgO-based refractories. For example there are efforts underway to extract MgO from mineral magnesite and to combine natural dolomite with MgO1. Beginning in the late sixties, rather intensive research began on the development of CaO brick, especially in East and West Germany, in Poland, and other communist bloc satellites, &apos;and also in Italy and Spain. One speculates that the motivation was a regional shortage of good magnesia and dolomitic material. Of course, There has always existed the prospect of cost savings should it be possible to use raw limestone as the starting material. Quite a large literature has appeared treating of these developments which in the early seventies had already reached full plant scale trials and uses. Some of the directions followed in the research have led to novel methods of brick manufacture.

This is an introductory paper on a new method of prospecting for mineral deposits which has been developed by Scintrex Limited. The method, which we call Luminex, for luminescent mineral exploration, is based on time- resolved mineral luminescence created by an ultraviolet light source. It has the ability to detect and resolve a group of key minerals which are either ore minerals themselves, or more often, are accessory or pathfinder minerals for certain types of economic ore deposits. Fortunately, these minerals are commonly found at the earth&apos;s surface, even in areas of considerable weathering. The method extends the range of mineral deposits which are remotely detectable from the air to include those such as tungsten, tin, molybdenum, gold and bedded lead-zinc deposits and, is therefore, a natural supplement to our three classical methods of airborne geophysics.

In the mining industry and particularly in the processing plants, we use some large and unusual equipment. Understanding what it is and what it does is important to good operations, but how do you teach a new employee. When I started out in this field, the information on the processing equipment was easy to come by. Equipment manufacturers readily supplied it; their salesmen, often engineers themselves, knew how important the availability of this information was. Old engineers used their notebooks to train the new engineers. Over time this has changed. Equipment manufacturers have changed hands or gone out of business, and often the older engineers are gone. As a start in reversing this, this presentation will be an introduction to sizing, selecting, and operation of some of this equipment, in particular gravity separating equipment. Major portions of this have been excerpted from A Mining Engineers Notebook: Mineral processing (2).

THE ROLE OF MANAGEMENT IN PLANT SAFETY Safe Production In plant management, safe production is an ideal. It becomes reality when: 1. Plant employees work in healthful and safe conditions. 2. Plant safety is in harmony with productivity. 3. Worker absenteeism and turnover are low-the work force is stable. Plant management must apply its talents, skills, and resources to build and maintain the foundations of safe production on a system of policies, procedures, and attitudes. It must do so by marshaling all managerial functions - staffing, direction, control, innovation, and representation-toward that goal. Ideally, a plant safety program is proactive. Management should plan and implement safety activities that are aimed at prevention. Past accidents-accomplished facts-should not be the sole guide of future actions. In other words, positive preventive measures, not the fewness of accidents are the criteria for safety production. An ideal safety program is one which is cost effective. Management should view plant safety as part of a broader program-loss control. Loss control includes prevention of fires and other accidents, unhealthful conditions, and occurrences that cause bodily injury, illness, property loss, or damage. Management evaluates the employees&apos; productivity and safety. An effective training program aimed at loss control is the hallmark of safe production. Ideally, both labor and management should be well versed in safety. They believe in the premise that work-related injury and illness, as well as property loss and damage from fire and other accidents, are manageable and preventable. Such belief prompts them to learn more about the work process and potential hazards associated with each job. They also learn how to expect and prevent fues and other accidents, and respond to emergencies at the plant. Adequate planning for the development, operation, and reclamation of a surface mine requires attention to present and future uses of land, both on the mine site and in the mine vicinity. This paper outlines land use implications of surface mining, and suggests procedures that could link mine planning, mine operation, and reclamation to more general land use concerns. Mining is viewed as a temporary use of land that may irretrievably commit land resources away from some future activities, but may allow other uses, some of which may have been impossible without mining. A process consisting of leach, continuous countercurrent decantation, resin-in-column ion exchange, evaporative crystallization of beryllium sulfate, and decomposition of the sulfate was developed for Spor Mountain, Utah, ores. The process is metallurgically sound, has a minimum of process steps, and is applicable to a wide variety of beryllium ores. The most novel aspect of the process is a resin system of ion exchange which is highly selective for beryllium and which rejects substantially all impurities except for minor amounts of aluminum, magnesium, fluorine, and sulfate in addition to beryllium. The oxide from sulfate decomposition meets specifications of potential users.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in opencut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints, such as spoil heaps and rivers. Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near-horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only.

In July 1997, Krupp Canada obtained the contract to design and supply the conveyor system for Chile&apos;s Los Pelambres copper mine expansion project. Progress on the overland conveyor system is currently on schedule. It is a challenging task to convey copper ore from an open-pit mine located on a mountain site 3,000 m (9,840 ft) above sea level down 1,300 m (4,265 ft) to the processing plant at the valley floor below. The Los Pelambres conveyor system moves copper ore at a rate of 8.7 ktlh (9,600 stph) and at a speed of 6 ml sec (1,180 ftlmin) for 12,750 m (41,830 ft). The distance is divided in three conveyors, each 1,800 mm (71 in.) wide. The largest conveyor is 6 km (3.7 miles) long. To protect against avalanches and rockslides, the conveyors run through a 12-km- (7.4-mile-) long tunnel system. The lowest of the three conveyors is equipped with a shuttling head end. With this, the conveyor discharge point can be moved back and forth by 100 m (330 ft), allowing it to build up a longitudinal stockpile at its end. To meet the extreme design parameters, the limits of conveyor design had to be pushed to record-setting marks. For instance, the ST-7800 steel cord conveyor belt is the strongest belt ever installed in a conveyor system. A total drive power of 25 MW (33,535 hp), consisting of 10 2.5-MW (3,352-hp) drives, is included in the design plans. In loaded condition, the electric motors act as generators and feed electric energy back into the power grid. The motors are controlled by variable frequency inverters that provide an infinite adjustment of motor speed. This technology allows starting and stop- ping the conveyors precisely along predetermined acceleration and deceleration ramps. This is done so harmful belt jerking and stress waves can be avoided.

Ore reserve estimation at the Syncrude Canada Ltd. open-pit oil sands mine in Northern Alberta has evolved since the project&apos;s inception. Early techniques followed a conventional petroleum reservoir analysis format, with relatively widely-spaced drill holes and semiquantitative grade data. Experience has developed a more standard mining approach, including classification of geological materials by both lithology and sedimentary origin, timely and multi-purpose drill holes, precise analytical data, empirical recovery factors, a computerized geological data base, and an ore body block model. Future efforts will involve enhancement of existing techniques, use of geostatistical algorithms, quantification of confidence limits, and improved control of the ore model by geological parameters.

John Marks said in his acceptance of the Hartman Award in 2008, “I guess that without the occasional complaint, your mine is probably over-ventilated” (Marks, 2008). Miners are seldom in this situation and spend much of the time trying to find enough air to keep an operation running. With examination, there are usually changes that can be made to increase the efficiency of ventilation systems. Mine ventilation air is a costly commodity, especially by the time it has been heated or cooled and moved to the bottom of the shaft and through the mine airways. Modifications that result in surplus mine ventilation air could bring financial and environmental benefits. Some issues mine operators have needed to address recently are increased airflow requirements to dilute diesel particulates in metal and nonmetal mines, to ventilate reserves that are deeper, hotter, and further away from fans and shafts, and to meet demands from increased production. This paper discusses successful methods to find additional usable air when there is no extra ventilation capacity. Most of the options presented in this paper are useful for metal/ nonmetal operations but some may be applicable to coal as well.

The trona deposits near Green River, in southwestern Wyoming are world class in size and quality. They contain more than 25 times the reserves of the next largest trona deposit at Lake Magadi in Kenya. Based on present rates of production, the Green River reserve should last for more than 500 years. Since their discovery in 1938, the Union Pacific Corp. has been instrumental in the promotion, development and production of soda ash in Wyoming. Union Pacific spent several years drilling the deposits and trying to promote them to chemical companies. In 1947, Westvaco and Union Pacific entered into what became the first trona lease agreement. Today, the Green River Basin leads the world in soda ash production, accounting for about 25% of the world&apos;s supply. Green River producers process more than 14.5 Mt/a (16 million stpy) of trona to produce more than 8 Mt/a (9 million stpy) of soda ash. The future for Green River soda ash looks good, with more of the world looking towards the cheaper and higher quality source of soda ash coming from the natural deposits. Production from the Green River deposits should continue to grow as trade barriers and tariffs begin to fall in Europe and energy and environmental costs force the synthetic producers to exit the market.
