The major role of financial institutions in the free world in the development of mineral resources is to provide the necessary capital in the form of loans to underwrite the development of these resources by the industry on a stable and continuous basis. This capital provided by the depositors to the bank must be invested in sound projects where the degree of risk is relatively small, the return on the investment is reasonable and the time to retire the loan is of short duration. Money is, therefore, one of the important ingredients along with technology, manpower and an exploitable resource that will provide a sound economic base in this region of development. Canadian banks are similar to banks of other western nations, although each country has some differences in their banking systems. The basic difference between the American and Canadian systems is that the former employs unit banking while the Canadian utilizes the more mobile branch system, which is prohibited or restricted in the United States and some other countries. Canadian banks are the subject of this paper, so, subsequent material will relate to Canadian banks unless indicated otherwise. It will be realized by everyone that the mineral industry is only one area of the economy in which the banks are interested and to cover the subject matter in the time allowed, the topic is restricted to mineral resource development. In Canada this is a vital sector of our economy and before we outline some of the details of financing and services involved in various aspects of mineral development, a review of the Canadian mineral industry is a necessary part of the sequence of presentation. The writer presents this material as a resource engineer advising a major bank in mineral matters, so the presentation may relate more to the financial problems of the developer

Requirements of flue gas desulfurization (FGD) for Eastern and Western U.S. coals will not be the same because of differences in coal sulfur content, ash analysis, and beating value. The effects of these differences and of limited availability of water in the West are the subjects of this paper. Eastern and Central bituminous coals are generally high in sulfur and require removal efficiencies in the range of 70 to 90 percent to meet the Federal emission standard of 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu. Ash in Eastern coals is low in alkali content and is relatively insoluble in scrubber solutions. High sulfur content and market availability make salable product methods more attractive in the fast and Central United States than in the West. Western subbituminous coals and lignites are generally low in sulfur content, however, only a few deposits could reliably meet the Federal emission standard without FGD, Required removal efficiencies generally fall in the range of 0 to 60 percent to meet the 1.2 lb SO2/MMBtu limit. If the standard were raised to 2 lb S02/MMBtu, approximately two-thirds of Western coals could be burned without FGD. Some Western coals contain ash high in alkali, some of which is soluble in scrubber solutions. This complicates scrubber chemistry, but it also provides the meant for displacing some or all of the limestone requirements when only moderate S02 removal is required. Dry areas in the West would benefit from full commercial developement of dry processes of FGD.

The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

Hanna Mining Company's Groveland Mine is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The low grade iron ore deposit consists of a mixture of magnetite and hematite with chert, jasper, quartz and various iron silicates (1). The ore is beneficiated by magnetic separation and anionic flotation of the iron minerals with chemical depression of the silica. The magnetic concentrate makes up about 75% of the concentrate. The concentrate is pelletized at the rate of 2.0 million LTPY of pellet production. The concentrator facilities were started up in 1959 and the concentrate was marketed as sinter feed until 1963 when the concentrator was expanded and the pelletizing plant was added. The pellet plant now consists of regrinding, elutriation, filtering, balling and induration. The pellet machine is a straight grate which employs updraft drying and cooling and downdraft drying, preheat and firing. It is necessary to regrind the concentrate before pelletizing. The con-centrate is 60% passing 325 mesh, with a surface area of ±lOOO cm2/Gm, and must be ground to about 83% passing 325 mesh, 1600 cm2/Gm blaine surface area, for pelletizing. The energy for regrind has been reduced from 12.5 KW per LT to 8.80 KW ate of 2.0 million per LT. This was the result of changes made in the concentrator where originally a coarse spiral concentrate, instead of the magnetic concentrate which is screened on fine screens to reduce the coarse fraction and prevent overgrinding before flotation, was produced. Also in 1968 an additional concentrating line was added to the concentrator which employs more grinding power than the other three lines. The demand for a high iron grade and lower silica pellet resulted in the investigation of different schemes of upgrading the reground concentrate which had more iron values liberated during grinding for surface area. The reagentized material presented many problems, mainly in selectivity trying to flot the iron and with high reagent consumption having to dereagentize the concentrate for amine silica flotation, in the various flotation systems tried. The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) has committed to solve a major drainage problem in the suburban Chicago community of Griffith, Indiana. The Cady Marsh Ditch is currently undersized and on occasion spills its banks causing flooding and economic setbacks to the community. Preliminary studies have identified both tunnel and surface solutions as being attractive and viable. The USACE has decided that this project is an opportunity to use the design-build contracting approach to maximize ingenuity in project approach and to allow the market to dictate whether a surface or subsurface solution is most attractive. The tunnel would be over one-mile in length through sands, gravels and clay. Water control will be an issue during tunneling. The paper will explore the contracting approach to the project and the adaptation of Underground Technology Research Council (UTRC) guidelines for underground contracting to a design build project. The roles of Owner, Owner’s consultant, and design-build contractor will be defined as interpreted by the USACE and key contract provisions will be described and contrasted with a traditional design-bid-build approach to tunnel construction.

It is believed that sulfur and volatile matter contents in coals are the main intrinsic properties to cause the self-heating of coal. Their oxidation at lower temperatures than that of fixed carbon to initiate coal's self-heating should be quantified. This study is aimed to improve the previous mathematical model developed by the authors for studying the coal's propensity for spontaneous combustion. It enhances the model's ability to consider the effects of sulfur, volatile matter and moisture contents in the coal - three important factors affecting the coal's self-heating process. Sulfur exists in coal primarily in the form of pyrite which will be oxidized rapidly under suitable conditions. Volatile matters, higher in low rank coals, are more easily to be oxidized. Heat of water condensation provides initial energy for low temperature oxidation. Heat release rates for pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are built in the model. Finally, the simulation results in terms of time versus temperature on pyrite oxidation and moisture condensation are validated with the adiabatic testing data respectively.

INTRODUCTION The Washington, D.C. rapid transit system (METRO) when completed will consist of 98 miles of double track rail. Fifteen miles will be tunneled in rock and 12 large underground rock chambers will be constructed at station locations. The University of Illinois is under contract to Metro to provide observations and instrumentation services in the initial phase of construction. The work is coordinated through DeLeuw, Cather & Co., the General Engineering Consultant to Metro. The program is designed to monitor construction conditions as well as to provide information useful for the design of future rock tunnels and rock chambers in the Metro system. This paper presents the results of observations in the rock tunnels constructed to date. Most of the observations are in a 5000-ft-long, 30-ft-wide, double track tunnel in downtown Washington, D.C. Observations were also made in single track tunnels, shafts, enlargement areas, and pilot tunnels, and are being made in a large rock chamber 700 ft long, 76 ft wide, and constructed at shallow depth in a schistose gneiss. One of the major objectives of the observational program was to determine the orientation and character of joints and shear zones and to evaluate their effect on support requirements for various tunnel orientations and configurations. The consistency of geologic features throughout the Washington area has made the results of the initial study applicable to evaluation of support requirements on future tunnel contracts. The first section of this paper summarizes the geologic conditions in the tunnel and their effect on overbreak and rock movement.

The present study introduces a new approach to understand the copper dissolution rate and to find an adapted mathematical statement for particle shrinkage rate in a batch bioleaching system. Four size classes of a chalcopyrite concentrate, namely [D1 : (−54 + 44)μm, D2 : (−44 + 38)μm, D3 : (−38 + 25)μm and D4 : (−25)μm], were used in the batch bioleaching tests by applying a mixed culture of moderately thermophilic microorganisms. The pulp density and temperature were 8 (%w/v) and 50 °C, respectively. Findings delineated that the bioleaching time can be divided into two specific time intervals: first, the surface reactions were the prevailing controlling step; second, the prevailing mechanism was diffusion through the product layer, whereas the overall rate of the process may be related to both through a Q factor using a mixed model. A mathematical model was developed based on particle size distribution (PSD) and a kinetic model. Experimental validation of the mixed model was accomplished by the representative sample with d80 = 54 microns. Results showed that the PSD of the specific sample was in good agreement with Rosin–Rammler function. Besides, the simulation result of the conversion fraction had the best conformity with the experimental data (with a maximum error of approximately 7%). This paper should be considered as an initial part of a larger, global model for chalcopyrite concentrate bioleaching.

Repairing and replacing equipment damaged by corrosion and abrasion is a major cost throughout industry, especially in the coal mining industry. Careful study of corrosion and abrasion, and their causes and effects, often leads to the selection of alternative materials which can provide economies. What, actually, are corrosion and abrasion and how do they contribute to the cost of operating a coal-preparation plant? Furthermore, what can be done to alleviate corrosion and abrasion problems and thereby reduce operating costs? These questions will be answered in the following discussion, which will describe the destructive action of corrosion and abrasion and give several methods for controlling corrosion and abrasion losses, These methods include the substitution of stainless steel for carbon steel, the use of corrosion inhibitors, and the use of design to eliminate corrosion and abrasion. Examples will be given illustrating the benefits that have resulted in plant tests when these methods of controlling corrosion and abrasion were used.

In underground excavations, under high stress conditions, ground support systems must provide safe and effective response to dynamic events. These systems must be capable to resist dynamic impacts and yielding during the loading process. In this context dynamic testing of the reinforcement and retaining elements that compose the ground support system are required to study and improve the behaviour of these elements under dynamic load events. During the last years, Geobrugg has been working on the improvement of retaining products by testing them in a large-scale impact test facility located at Walenstadt, Switzerland. The test facility is composed of a double level platform with a square-shaped pyramidal trunk geometry, in the upper level housing a loading mass that drop from a height up to 5m. The loading mass is guided by one central steel pipe, and the impact occurs in the sample to be tested located at the lower level in a slab with an area of 3.6m × 3.6m where the ground support system is installed. During the last years, this innovative facility has been used to test several configurations of ground support systems. The results of these tests have enabled to improve the understating of the behaviour of ground support systems under dynamic loads. In this manuscript, the back analysis through numerical methods (central difference and Newmark’s method) of a ground support system tested with a double dynamic impact in 2019 is presented.

Batch leaching experiments have been performed to study the kinetics of galena leaching in fluosilicic acid solutions with oxidants. Variables studied included: fluosilicic acid concentration, oxidant type, oxidant concentration, particle size and leaching temperature. It was found that hydrogen peroxide was the most effective oxidant, compared to the others studied, and the effect of the oxidant concentration on the leaching behavior of galena was very significant. Also, decreasing the particle size and increasing the leaching temperature increased the extraction rate. The initial, apparent activation energy was calculated to be 11.72 kJ/mole (2.8 kcal/mole) and suggested that galena leaching in fluosilicic acid solution, with hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant, may be controlled by fluid film mass transfer initially. The reaction appears to be retarded by the formation of elemental sulfur and the sulfur oxidation becomes a major resistance to the overall leaching reaction.

The Stillwater District is located in south central Montana approximately 75 miles southwest of Billings, the state's largest city. It lies along the northeast front of the Beartooth Mountains and is within the boundaries of the Custer and Gelatin National Forests. The district contains some of the nation's most spectacular mountain scenery. Montana's highest peaks, including 12,799 foot Granite Peak, rise a few miles south of the area. Much of the district is located on a gently undulating plateau which averages 8500 ft. above sea level, broken by hills up to 10,000 feet and slashed by glacially carved canyons, some of which are more than 3,000 feet deep.(Fig. 1) Immediately to the north and east, the land falls away to the Great Plains, stretching unbroken to the Mississippi River. Two major tributaries of the Yellowstone River, the Stillwater and Boulder Rivers, traverse the area and several large streams originate in the district itself. Access to the high mountain country and the adjoining Beartooth Primitive Area is restricted to a few horse and jeep trails continuing from the terminus of improved roads in the bottom of the Stillwater and Boulder Valleys. Hunters, fishermen and cabin owners make intensive use of the area along its improved transportation routes, but hikers seldom venture more than three miles beyond the end of the roads. People from the Billings area are the most frequent visitors.

Deposits are global, said Barrick Gold's Smith. This means that the mineral industry, by necessity, is global. "Manufacturers have considerable freedom to decide exactly where they wish to produce whatever it is that they sell," he said. "What we sell, on the other hand, must be produced where nature chose to lay it down. The question is not so much, whether to go global, as when to do it and how to go about it." The timing of international expansion depends on external factors, often political, Smith said, and on internal ones that relate to the company's size and stage of development. "In deciding how to expand, a company is largely deciding how to adapt its existing business strategy to activity on the world stage," he said Barrick entered 1997 with 1.58 kt (51 million oz) of reserves, Smith said, annual production of 93.3 t (3 mil- lion oz) and cash flow of $463 million. Reserves in- creased 40% in 1996 and production will begin to rise again significantly in 1999. "We believe our fundamental strategy is responsible for our early development and subsequent success," he said. Barrick entered the gold-mining industry in 1983. Its corporate mandate was to create shareholder value, Smith said. From the beginning, the company took a different approach - businesslike, entrepreneurial, strategic and focused. "Many mining companies start out with a technical team and develop business and financial expertise thereafter," Smith said. "In 1983, Barrick had the business people, and then moved into mining." First, it acquired part interest in two small operations, one in Alaska and one in Ontario. Then, in 1984, it merged with Camflo Mines, which operated a low-cost underground operation in Quebec.

Tunnel segmental lining design constitutes a significant iterative process where modeling and numerical analysis are factors in deciding the number of segments, their dimensions, gasket placements, as well as the locations of dowels and bolts. Consequently, these modifications lead to revisions in the final drawing details. However, the current tunnel engineering practices lack systematic solutions that effectively bridge the gap between the iterative design process and efficient visualization of completed drawings due to the time- consuming nature of redrawing. This paper presents a pioneering application of AI-driven solutions including using Autodesk's API, for the Northside Interceptor Tunnel (NSIT) Project. It showcases the automation of drawing design and the real-time visualization of modifications, thereby streamlining the drawing process.

Feldspar, a low-alumina, and abundantly available aluminosilicate source, is explored in this study to extract aluminum and potassium values. The sample comprises lamellar layers of microcline and albite with quartz containing 17.4% Al2O3, 9.67% K2O, and 66.3% SiO2. Mechanical (milling) and thermal (alkali and acid baking) activation are investigated, followed by HCl leaching. The milling treatment up to 6 h is inefficient in phase dissociation and results in ~ 40% Al and K dissolution. The alkali thermal treatment yielded 80% Al and 71% K extraction. Direct precipitation of the dissolved Al and Si values yielded alumina purity of ~ 29%, and silica gelation separated SiO2 and improved alumina product (94% purity, 71% recovery). Acid baking yielded 98% pure alumina precipitate; however, Al and K extraction were limited to ~ 45% and 65%, respectively. The microwave-assisted alkali treatment was optimal with 800 W and 10 min processing conditions yielding 80% Al and 71% K recovery with 2.26 kWh/kg alumina of thermal energy consumption. The Three Rivers Protection & Overflow Reduction Tunnel is part of the Long-Term Control Plan of the City of Fort Wayne, Indiana (USA). The 4.9 m internal diameter tunnel, of length approximately 7.5 km, is excavated at a depth of approximately 40–60 m through carbonate rocks using a slurry TBM. Due to the high hydraulic conductivity of the rock mass and the high in-situ ground water pressure (up to 6.5 bar), the management of the water inflow during the TBM advance and standstills, represents the major challenge for the project. This paper outlines the geotechnical conditions and the hazards related to the large water inflows expected in the pre-excavation phase and discusses the experience gained during the construction of the first 8,224 feet (2,507 m), (first third of the total length of the tunnel).

In the article "Concentration of Oil Shale,"(1) Dr. N. Arbiter stated, "One of the major factors in the delayed utilization of oil shale as an energy raw material is the low grade or content of hydrocarbon (kerogen) in oil shale as compared with coal and even more so to the liquid and gaseous fuels. " When the availability of high-grade deposits decreased, mineral industries started adopting prebeneficiation procedures for the low-grade deposits. This practice, which is becoming standard in these other industries, has been largely overlooked by the oil shale industry in its drive to produce oil from oil shale. If a major portion of this mineral matter can be removed, there can be potentially large savings in the capital and operating costs of oil shale retorts. Moreover, the environmental impact, associated with recovering the shale oil, could be reduced considerably. In 1980 Roberts & Schaefer Resource Service (RSRS) completed successfully the first set of demonstration runs with a 20-ton oil shale sample from Cathedral Bluffs (C-b tract), Colorado. This relatively low grade (~12 gpt oil content) oil shale was beneficiated applying the Dutch State Mines Heavy Medium Cyclone process. (2)

Low-grade iron ore received from the West Singhbhum area of Jharkhand state in India was used to develop a beneficiation flow sheet to remove alumina (Al2O3) and silica (SiO2 ) from the ore to get iron (Fe)-rich product for steel plants. Mineral characterization showed that the main mineral constituents present in the head sample are goethite, limonite, hematite, quartz, clay and gibbsite. The head sample contained about 49.2 percent Fe, 8.79 percent alumina and 12.01 percent silica. The received iron ore sample is amenable to upgradation through beneficiation to get pellet grade concentrate. The beneficiation process was established, involving crushing, screening, jigging, spiral separation, size reduction, desliming and magnetic separation. The process showed significant enrichment in Fe values to 63.5 percent Fe in concentrate, from 49.2 percent Fe. From the developed flow sheet, it is possible to obtain pellet grade fines with 63.5 percent Fe, 2.92 percent SiO2 and 2.61 percent Al2O3 with 50.6 percent weight recovery. The overall tailing loss is 49.4 percent with 34.3 percent Fe, 21.28 percent SiO2 and 14.64 percent Al2O3

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion widens the existing I-64 four-lane bridge-tunnel corridor to eight lanes through construction of two parallel tunnels, interstate widening, and bridge expansions. The design-build contract was awarded to Hampton Roads Connector Partners with HDR and Mott MacDonald retained as lead designers in a Design Joint Venture. This paper will highlight some of the e challenges related to the design of the twin bored tunnels from spaceproong, tunnel enabling wors, segmental lining design and durability considerations.

Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.
