Mercury contamination is a worldwide problem in the mining, smelting, and refining of gold, silver, and copper. In these areas, mercury may be found as a naturally-occurring material in ores and concentrates, and/or in secondary feedstocks such as leach residues, pyrometallurgical treatment residues, refinery by­products, electrowinning electrodes, autoclave discharge solids, and waste water and acid plant sludges. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has designated mercury one of the most harmful heavy metal contaminant in the environment and has implemented regulations that prohibit land disposal of characteristically hazardous wastes containing greater than 0.20 mg/1 TCLP mercury without prior treatment, thus increasing the cost of managing these materials. The presence of mercury in mine, smelter, and refinery by­products and wastes severely decreases, and in some cases eliminates, the ability to recover residual metal values from the contaminated material. The lost revenue associated with this disposal, combined with the increased direct cost of waste treatment, and/or disposal and protecting workers and the environment, can adversely affect overall profitability. The safe, efficient, and economical removal of mercury from gold, silver, and copper mining by-products requires a treatment process that is capable of liberating the mercury from the wide variety of compounds and matrices in which it may be contained, reducing the mercury content in the matrix to desired levels, and recovering the mercury in pure saleable form, without producing any secondary solid, liquid, or gaseous wastes. This paper reviews results from commercial operations and pilot scale tests using a thermal process owned and operated by Mercury Recovery Services, Inc. (MRS) to remove and recover mercury from copper acid plant blowdown sludge, Merrill­Crowe precipitate from gold/silver mining operations, and Cottrell and salt slag dusts from a precious metals refinery.

The Anshan Iron and Steel Co. (AISC) broke its steelmaking design capacity in 1978, bringing its total production of steel products to 6.86 Mt. Located south of the industrial city of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in northeastern China, it is by far China’s most important iron and steel complex, ranking twentieth among world centers. The complex represents a unique blend of old ecluipment and new ideas for increased production and improved products. Under a state plan, the Chinese hope to raise capacity to almost 15 Mt/a in the future. Originally started by the Japanese in the early 1920s, Anshan has had a rather turbulent 60-year history. It was disassembled by the Soviets after World War II, only to be reassembled by them in the 1950s. Production was also suppressed during the Cultural Revolution. Since the present-day organization, AISC, emerged, the center has experienced progressively improving conditions as well as increased production. Today, the center includes 10 blast furnaces, 24 open hearths, and two basic oxygen units, designed for 7 Mt/a ironmaking and 6.5 Mt/a steelmaking. In addition, it has six batteries of cokemaking facilities with combined 4.4-Mt/a capacity. Solid Iron Resources Anshan’s iron resources consist of a proven reserve base of over 7 Gt of 30~0 Fe, according to Kao Yang, president of the Anshan Iron Mining Co., a subsidiary of AI SC, Most of that, he continued, is amenable to surface mining. Five major mines located to the north and northeast of the city of Anshan are the principal iron ore producers. These mines trend in a somewhat circular manner and combined, represent an estimated 28.6 Ylt/a of ore capacity. In addition, some 2.2 Gt of magnesite, a necessary ingredient in steelmaking, are also part of the reserve base, according to Kao. Annual production is around .2 Mt/a of 47% magnesite, well over the steelmaking center’s annual requirements, Excess production is shipped to other steel-making centers. The largest of Anshau’s open-pit mines is the Chitashan operation with a design capacity of 8 Mt/a. Ore reserves here are well over a billion tons of 30% Fe. Earlier plans to expand production at this mine to 15 Mt/a, with the help of US Steel, have been temporarily shelved. The other mines in the district and their rated design capacity are: Kungchangling, 7 Mt/a; Donganshan, 6.4 Mt/a; Dakushan, 4.2 Mt/ti; and Yenchienshan, 3.0 Mt/a. The Kungchangling mine is the richest in terms of ore grade at 6076 Fe. Reserves are somewhat smaller at 100 Mt. The unit also operates a small shrinkage stoping operation. The Blair Athol Coal Mine (BAC) is a large open cut operation in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. Current mine capacity is about 11 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) of export coal. On-line analysis at BAC consists of two Coalscan 9500s installed directly on the output of the crusher plant and immediately before the product stockpiles, while a third Coalscan 9500 is installed on the transfer conveyor feeding the train loading bin. The two product Coals cans have a dual purpose. The first is to provide real time coal quality data directly back to the mining operations. The second is that of modeling the product stockpile with accurate on-line information. This modeling enables both production and coal quality personnel to accurately examine the coal quality of each stockpile with a degree of resolution which previously had never been achieved.

Large metallurgical complexes have more data than a small city and much of it is "real time," changing rapidly as internal and external conditions evolve. As corporations buy and sell assets and reengineer their staff, the structures and tools that were used to understand these data are lost. The lack of an integrated approach makes the profitability of metallurgical plants lag behind that of other industries despite technical advances that have occurred in recent years. This results in significant deterioration in the ability to maintain a "smart” operation. The solution is to use the sophisticated new tools built for the Internet so as to leverage information in a familiar browser format that people can use and understand. Combining real-time infrastructure with portal technology is becoming an accepted methodology. This paper introduces real-time portals and team sites to support decision making by work- groups which require both real-time and documentary information from manufacturing assets, vendors, head office and the Internet. Workers get insight from the overall process effectiveness index based on key variables such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. Real-time portals and smart clients are part of any real-time performance management (RtPM) solution. Three case studies in large metallurgical complexes are presented. The Bureau of Mines has studied 260 underground coal mine fires which occurred from 1970 through 1989. Every fire had the capacity to be hazardous to life and property, however upon closer examination some were found to be inherently more dangerous than others. Our research involved reviewing and recording specific information contained in published Mine Safety and Health Administration fire accident reports. The objective was to determine if degrees of hazard relative to fire source or location could be construed from information contained in the reports. We specifically looked at the propensity for fires to cause injuries and fatalities as well as the need to seal the area in order to extinguish the fire. Relative to all underground locations, this review found that fires occurring in main haulage-ways were most likely to cause injuries and fatalities as well as require sealing of at least the immediate area to extinguish.

In an increasingly environmentally conscious world, mining's importance to society has often been misunderstood and even maligned by the public. Extreme and impractical ideas have often been presented to children because of the lack of accurate, timely resource materials available to educators. In the late 1960s. two mining engineers, S.P. "Pi" Warren and C.L. "Lindy" Barker, became aware of this situation. They proposed to develop a summer field course to provide a factual overview of the minerals industry for teachers. The pair believed that teachers could become better informed to educate students, and future generations, about mining. These two Colorado Mining Association (CMA) members felt that such a course could reduce much of the misunderstanding about this vital industry. This could be done by providing a balanced perspective of mining, not only for kindergarten-through-grade-12 teachers, but also for the students they would be teaching during their careers. Students who better understood the minerals industry could better formulate an unbiased view of it. The course would seek recognized authorities from industry, academia and government who would lecture in their respective fields of expertise. The course would provide a total concept of the coal, aggregate, metals and industrial minerals industries. It would include geology, geophysics, exploration, mining, processing, marketing, product applications, economic, mining history, careers, and environmental responsiblity. When possible, site visits would permit educators to view operations and to meet the men and women who are industry leaders. Teachers would pay a small tuition fee. The balance of the program expenses for each teacher would be paid through scholarships provided by industry and individuals. The "total concept" idea obtained the support of the minerals industry. The support of CMA's Education Committee and the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) was obtained in 1968. Colorado's Commission on Higher Education approved teacher recertification credits through CSM's Office of Special Progams and Continuing Education for those successfully completing the program. The first six-week series of classes presenting the total concept of the indus¬try was held at CSM in 1969. In 1977, the CMA Education Foundation Inc. (CMAEF) was established as a Colorado nonprofit corporation. The "Total Concept of the Mining Industry" (Total Concept) course was placed under its sponsorship. CMAEF is dedicated toward this continuing education program (Table 1). In 1994, the course was streamlined to four-weeks for six hours recertification credit.

"In coal mines, handheld air, electric and hydraulic powered drills are used along belt conveyors, in single entry development, in entries where there are obstructions, and in longwall recovering bolting. In hard rock mines, pneumatically powered jackleg drills are typically used in narrow vein mining. Drilling and bolting in narrow confines has traditionally been performed with pneumatically or hydraulically powered hand-held drills or newer electrically powered hand- held hammer drills due to their low cost, simplicity of operation, and extreme flexibility due to their small size. Mechanized equipment has typically been too large, too expensive, inefficient due to the confined space, and too restrictive due to lack of flexibility for use in narrow confines.Although the handheld equipment is effective, it requires operator exposure to certain inherent hazardous conditions in use. These include falling rock from the roof, rib and face; tripping hazards; bending twisting lifting hazards; high noise levels and chemical fumes from the pneumatic exhaust. The operation of the hand held equipment can adversely affect the long-term health of the operator - continual jackleg operation frequently results in longterm damage to hearing, shoulders, arms and wrist joints and back injuries. This results in a reduction in life style for the operator and higher personnel turnover rates for the mining company.Hand-held drills also typically have limited thrust and torque capability that limits their ability to push long resin bolts, inadequate torque to properly install resin bolts or to properly torque mechanical or tensioned rebar bolts. Hand-held drills do not offer any type of protection for the operator from roof or rib falls. They do not offer any means for handling roof or rib mesh. Since the operator stands on the ground the maximum safe drilling height without use of a ladder or "riding the drill" is limited to 2.44 m (8 ft)."

A study has been made of wet, autogenous grinding of disseminated copper ores, including testing of a large number of samples from Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino mine. The efficiency with which the various samples could be ground was found to vary over an extremely wide range, even among samples taken from different locations within the same ore body. These variations in grindability can be qualitatively correlated with the composition of the rock and the fracturing and alteration that had occurred. Because of the large-scale non-homogeneity of disseminated copper ore bodies, extensive and careful testing of autogenous grinding is needed. An accurate correlation of the grinding data from various samples with the geology of the ore body and with mining plans will indicate if variations in grinding mill throughput can be avoided in practice by mixing or blending of mill feed and if, therefore, autogenous grinding can be applied successfully.

This paper is one of a series of presentations organized by the Conference of American Society of Civil Engineers with the goal of making significant progress toward an equitable and effective allocation of risks in construction undertakings among the principal parties - owner, contractor and designer. The role I have been assigned is principally one of identification of risk while others will devote greater attention to the allocation of these risks and the contractual arrangements necessary to properly make these allocations. Construction projects are joint undertakings by parties who bring different skills and interests toward a common effort, much as this conference does. A project is not an adversary proceeding and does not benefit from establishment of an adversary mode, as our lawyer friends seek in the resolution of legal issues. Accordingly, I urge upon this Conference the adoption of two basic precepts and guidelines as the criteria for sharing of the risks inherent in construction undertakings toward achievement through mutual effort the common goal of a successful project completed in the shortest time and at the least overall cost. These precepts are: (1) that all risks are rightfully the owners unless transferred to or assumed by another party for a fair compensation; and (2) that the principle guideline in determining whether a risk should be so transferred should be whether the receiving party has both the competence to fairly assess the risk and the expertise necessary to control or minimize it. The sponsors of the conference have provided certain guidelines to the authors. There is, however, no constraint in expressing one's bias and I suspect that my contractor's outlook may be inherent in my comments. The guidelines have suggested that I indicate whether the risks identified are ones that can or should be shared or borne by one party alone. In doing so, I will attempt to follow the precepts I have recommended.

Introduction An engineer is a builder and a problem solver. He uses knowledge of the properties of matter and energy to furnish the needs of society. Engineers form the bridge between scientific researchers and the general public, most of whom are technologically illiterate. Mining, metallurgical, and petroleum engineers extract minerals from the ground and process them into usable forms. Then, other engineers further process them into society's needs. Minerals engineers deal with more uncertainty than other engineers. Each ore deposit has its own personality and each ore is metallurgically unique. Minerals engineers, therefore, must be flexible, often applying larger safety factors and contingencies than other engineers, and frequently functioning as a jack of all trades. A minerals engineer can work in coal, oil, oil shale, base metals, ferrous metals, precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic minerals, or in exploration. Other mining jobs include banking and financing, education and research, marketing and sales, and government. As a minerals engineer, you may be among the first to work on the ocean floor or the moon. College Preparation A difference between college and industry is the type of problems to be solved. A typical college problem has an exact answer derived from given information. An industry problem is more apt to have a solution chosen from a number of alternatives. Information required for the solution is not given. It must be measured, calculated, looked-up, estimated, or otherwise derived. Solutions involve trade-offs, economics, and human factors, as well as application of physical laws and theory. When a college problem is answered, you move on to the next one. In industry, however, the headaches may just be starting with the implementation of the solution. Students often complain that they see little use for the theory they are learning. This is valid. A good professor will link theory and practice. Another difference between college and industry is the price of failure. In college, you can make a half-hearted effort in an assignment and take your C or D. On the job, however, poor engineering results in potentially effective projects being rejected and unsound projects being undertaken. Poor performance results in cost overruns, schedule holdups, oversights, disgruntled employees, irate bosses, unsafe structures, and unreliable systems. The costs are time, money, and possibly lives. The student pays the university for his work - not the other way around. So the rewards for good schoolwork often seem nebulous. But education must be viewed as an investment. Working for good grades will help you think better, learn more, receive better job offers, and perform more effectively on the job. There is no substitute for hard work. Avoid taking the easiest electives. If you desire a more liberal education or dislike rigorous physical sciences, mathematics, or engineering courses, change majors. Remember, you are training to be an engineer, not a computer programmer or market analyst. At least one summer of industry employment is necessary for minerals engineering students. The sooner you gain actual experience, the sooner you will know whether to change majors. Most large companies hire students during summer. It is best to send out applications around Christmas break. First and second year students usually work as laborers. Upper-classmen may work as engineering technicians. Students must sometimes choose between returning to a company at a higher position or trying a different company at a lower position, for more varied experience. Both alternatives have advantages. Do your best on these summer jobs. The company is watching. If you do well, the chances are good you will get a job offer when you graduate. Good references are important when you begin job hunting. Interviewing occurs near the end of your school career. The standard procedure is to send your resume with a cover letter to each company you are interested in. The resume for a graduating engineer with little experience need not exceed one page. The cover letter must be written for the individual company.

Productivity is a fascinating concept. Like motherhood or apple pie, we know it as a good thing. Just what it means is not so clear. To a coal miner we assume it means tons of coal hauled from the mine. To the company president it means profit after capital, labor, and other costs have also been reckoned. To the government economist it means output in a balance of payments. What does it mean to the biologist, and can reclamation really be productive? In this paper we discuss productivity from a biological viewpoint, give some yield data for various types of reclamation plantings, and discuss how our demand for or acceptance of differing kinds of productivity is tied up in bigger questions of land use, environmental stability, and resource allocation.

The coal mining industry is being called upon to vastly increase production in the coming years. Many mining operations will have to prepare an environmental impact report of some kind and all will have to comply with various types of environ- mental regulations. Therefore there is a great need within the industry for access to environmental data, information, and literature. This paper discusses the informational resources available, the current lack of access to these resources, and the Environmental Data, Information and Literature (EDIL) Bank of the Kentucky Institute for Mining and Minerals Research. The bank's major emphasis concerns the environmental, social and economic aspects of producing clean solid, liquid, and gaseous fuels from coal. The data bank promotes information interchange between other related governmental and private projects and the energy development community.

Bortech’s BoreClad corrosion protection system will be displayed at MINExpo. BoreClad is an innovative system for inside diameter cladding of nozzles, tubes and other circumferential devices. Pressure vessels, mud pumps and other mining equipment must be protected from corrosive caustic chemicals. Usually manufactured from mild steel, they can be clad with a protective material, such as stainless steel, to provide corrosion resistance. However, most welding processes leave voids where corrosion can damage the base metal. BoreClad provides void-free welds by combining gas metal arc welding with automated feed and rotation of chuckable parts. Workpieces of up to 915-mm- (36-in.-) long with a 460-mm- (18-in.-)swing can be clad with stainless steel, Iconel or other exotic metals. The research presented here was initiated to investigate the role of atmospheric oxygen in the leaching of copper waste dumps. The problem of increasing the recovery rate of copper from these dumps is or great importance considering there are by conservative estimate in excess of fifteen billion pounds of copper located in dumps in the western United States. At this time, there is an increased interest in recovering copper from these dumps on a large scale. Large tonnages of low-grade material are being placed on the waste dumps of most copper mining operations in the western United States each day. The size of these dumps ranges from 5.5 million tons at Mineral Park, Arizona, to 4 billion tons at Kennecott's Utah operation (1). Leach solutions are recycled and contain ferrous and ferric sulfates. Large quantities of dissolved aluminum, magnesium and calcium salts may also be present. To this solution make up water is added to maintain the solution inventory and sulfuric acid is added for pH adjustment. Iron is introduced into the leach solution by the dissolution of the iron-containing sulfide and oxidized minerals present in the ore deposit. In addition to the iron from dump leaching, iron is also introduced during the precipitation process when the pregnant solution is passed over metallic scrap iron if cementation is used to reduce the copper in solution.

My first contact with underground, bolt conveyors came when I was hired as a draftsman by the La-Del Conveyor & Manufacturing Company in 1935. At that tine relatively few nines were using haulage belt conveyors. Wore they were in use, they were usually loaded by chain or shaker type room conveyors which in turn were hand loaded at the working face. Duo to the low room tonnage, a gathering belt might receive who output of from six to eight rooms. For several years belts 26 and 30" in width were the favorites for coal mine use. Belt speeds very seldom exceeded 200 ft. per mm. at that time. Conveyor lengths for the majority of units lay between 1.000 and 2000 ft. For a number of years 25 H.P. drives were adequate for those conveyors. From 1940 until about 1950 loads and speeds went up slightly and 40 H.P. drives became the standard. Since the majority of mines were then using direct current power systems, we were able to use controllers with 3 or more steps of starting resistance. The slow belt speeds coupled with relatively long starting cycles kept the rate of acceleration low and gave us smooth, easy starts.

"Application of mechanical excavators for rock excavation in both civil construction and mining engineering fields has increased significantly in recent years. Prediction of the excavation performance of any mechanical excavators – tunnel boring machines, roadheaders, impact hammers, continuous miners and shearers for any geological formation is one of the main concerns in determining the economics of a mechanized mining and/or tunneling operation. A new portable linear rock cutting (PLCM) device was developed in the Mining Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University and supported by The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK-112M859). The PLCM is used for cutting small core or block rock samples by a real-life mini disc cutter. The results from the PLCM are compared with the results obtained from the full scale rock cutting tests and theoretical model. It is found that there is reliable correlation between test results obtained from both cutting tests and theoretical model. 1. INTRODUCTION Mechanical excavators are currently the only alternatives to drill and blast due to higher production rate, increased safety, uniform muck size, less roof support, easier ventilation, continuous rather than cyclical operation, and possibilities for automatic control. The most of large civil tunneling and some mining projects are now carried out by mechanical excavators rather than drill and blast methods. Mechanical excavators can be categorized into two main groups: full-face and partial-face machines. Full-face machines such as tunnel boring machines excavate the face in one mode at the size of the cutterhead. Due to their cutting mode, the shape of the face profile by the full-face machines can only be circular. As for partial-face machines, the cutterhead is attached at the end of a boom. The face profile excavated by the partial-face machines can be from circular to horseshoe shape due to the cutting mode of the boom."

Although calcium sulfate dihydrate, commonly referred to as gypsum, has been utilized for some time in fiberglass reinforced polyester (FRP) applications, it does not have the fire retardant filler recognition of ATH. Gypsum is more commonly known for application in cement, soil and water treatment, plaster, and wall-board. Inherent characteristics of gypsum limit its use to low temperature and, until recently, non-aqueous applications. However, as a plentiful, naturally occurring hydrated mineral, the cost effectiveness of calcium sulfate dihydrate has prompted development and yielded success in the areas of FRP spray-up and latex carpet backing.

It has often seemed to me that people are too prone to turn to new and untried materials in an effort to solve their problems, without giving sufficient consideration to the old stand-bys, except as a last resort, It?s a little like middle-aged men who are swept off their feet by the fresh beauty of a young girl without first considering the many advantages that a more mature woman has to offer. Maybe it?s because, like the older woman, the older materials have to make a determined effort to keep themselves looking young and attractive. T at?s just about the situation with which the lead industry is laced. We have to make a determined effort to keep lead looking young and attractive to industry. However, there is one difference and it is important, Lead can not only be kept looking young, but it can, in fact, actually be kept young, This results from two things. First, industry and technology are constantly changing. For example, we have known for years that the density of lead makes it ideal to stop gamma rays, but it is only recently that atomic fission as a source of gamma radiation has become an important tool of industry, That makes old knowledge about lead useful in developing a new market for it.

This paper presents the findings of a study on roof bolters' hazard exposure. A "micro-analysis" of accident data was combined with ergonomic observations of roof bolter operators to categorize bolting-related injuries and a checklist was constructed. Bolting-related problems were identified as situations that could expose bolter operators to hazards. Approaches to avoid these situations were applied at six mining operations to evaluate specific problems in roof bolting operations. The re-search emphasized the importance of analyzing worker behaviors in the context of mining situations and equipment design problems that lead to human error accidents.
