This study outlines implemented tactics and results for community empowerment through participation in questionnaire surveys, educational programs, and discussion on sustainable sourcing from new critical raw materials (CRMs) projects. Utilising questionnaire surveys, including the Public Participation Geographic Information System (PPGIS), the research gathered public opinions from Estonia, Germany, Poland, and Zambia, receiving 1,068 responses. These responses addressed various social, economic, and environmental issues related to CRM projects. Feedback from educational courses with participants from over 25 nations and public events provided additional insights. The collected data and feedback offer crucial input for advancing sustainable and responsible CRM sourcing strategies in these regions.

Exxon Minerals Company uses geostatistical techniques for ore resource evaluation of its mineral projects. These techniques provide the most reliable estimates of recoverable tonnage and grade and uniform and realistic confidence limits. A schema has been developed which categorizes the company's successive evaluation phases. Clear separation is intended between geostatistical estimates and other factors in project evaluation such as mining, metallurgy, and economics. Company management seeks consistent and reliable estimates for investment decision-making and to meet growing demands for disclosure of mineral assets.

In April 1989, Southern Company Services signed a 3.5 year contract with DOE-PETC for generic engineering development of an advanced physical fine coal cleaning technology known as selective agglomeration. This technology offers the potential for significantly higher pyritic sulfur removal (90% +) than conventional coal cleaning (30 to 50%) while maintaining high Btu recovery (90% +). Engineering development will include bench-scale process development; component development; adaption or modification of existing unit operations; proof-of-concept (POC) module design, fabrication, testing and evaluation; and small commercial facility conceptual design. The information obtained during POC operation will be sufficient to result in a technical and economic design base that can support construction and operation of a small commercial plant. The major goal of the research is to develop selective agglomeration technology to achieve 90% pyritic sulfur removal while operating at Btu recoveries above 90% based on run-of-mine quality coal. This objective will be accomplished in two phases: Phase 1 -bench-scale and component development, and Phase 2 -POC module operation and conceptual design of a small commercial plant. Currently, work is proceeding under Phase 1 (Tasks 1-7) of the project. A review of the status of Tasks 1-7 is presented in this paper.

In an industrialized nation, as the process of industrialization continues, the ratio of the value of production of non-metallic to metallic minerals normally increases gradually over a period of years. For example, in the United States, the ratio of the value of production of non-metals to metals now is approximately two-to-one. Those of us who come from California like to think that we inherit the mantle of the old hard-rock miner, but the truth of the matter is that, in California, of the total value of mineral production exclusive of fuels, 97% comes from non-metallic - industrial - minerals. Since the industrial minerals furnish a principal source of raw materials for the construction and chemical processing industries and since these two industries, in industrialized nations, generally increase directly with increasing population, the future of industrial mineral production both in the United States and throughout the world is indeed bright. Because of the importance of industrial mineral production, it often surprises those of us in the industrial mineral industry to find that industrial minerals are poorly understood by many of our colleagues in the mining industry. I think that one reason for this comprehension of the industrial mineral industry is that the education of both geologists and mining engineers still markedly emphasizes exploitation of the metals.

"In order to conserve the coal resources, many coal mines which have been mined begin to re-mine. Re-mining face is of complicated circumstances and coal spontaneous combustion is unknown, so experiments are designed to study the characteristics of multiple oxidized coal samples. The investigation into the oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. The non-caking coal is collected as coal samples. The raw coal sample with initial oxidation and the sample after second oxidation and third oxidation are obtained after a certain treatment of the coal. The temperature-programmed system, and proximate and ultimate analysis are adopted to compare the releases of gaseous products of spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of the multiple oxidized coal sample. With the increase of oxidation times, experimental results indicate that the oxygen consumption rate, the release rate of carbon monoxide and the intensity of heat release are significantly decrease. The characteristic temperature dropped and the size of the pores in coal is smaller as well. INTRODUCTION China accounts for 13% of global coal resources [1-2]. In recent years, more and more coal mines begin to re-mine in order to conserve resources. This production mode is to mine coal pillar left by last exploitation or unavailable for mining. In the process of slicing mining for coal seam groups or thick coal seams, the second or multiple oxidation due to the mining-induced effect, may take place in the goaf of the lower seam. So the spontaneous combustion is prone to occur in this area. The study on oxidation of coal is conducive to the safe mining of the coal seam groups and thick coal seams. Scholars [3-7] have discussed the workability of re-mining for coal mines, verify the feasibility of the existing mining technology for re-mining area, and set up the prevention measures of coal spontaneous combustion. But all these measures are only based on on-site observation data, instead of experiment on spontaneous combustion characteristic parameters of re-mining coal samples which have a great importance for early prediction and forecast. The authors aim at investigating the multiple-oxidated coal spontaneous combustion law, and perfecting the coal spontaneous combustion mechanism to provide a basis for the prediction and forecast."

If you build a big truck, build a big tire to match it. Let that haulage synergy aid the economics, productivity and lessened maintenance for the unit. Now, Cater-pillar and Michelin have done just that. Discussions began in 1996. Caterpillar was making plans for its 797 ultra-class haul truck. The development team realized the need for a tire that could withstand extreme loads. The 797 would weigh 558 t (615 st) and be capable of 64 km/h (40 mph) speeds. So Caterpillar approached Michelin. The two companies realized the benefits of jointly developing a tire for the 797.

Experiments conducted with limestone dusts and dolomitic marble dusts have indicated that when rock dust is wetted and subsequently dried, it becomes a solid, non-dispersible cake. However, in order to be effective, rock dust must be able to disperse as individual particles to inert. To counteract this, rock dust manufacturers created treated rock dusts that will resist caking after moisture exposure. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted a series of laboratory-scale experiments on four base rock dusts and their treated counterparts to assess the effectiveness of various anti-caking additives after being exposed to moisture and then dried. The dusts were exposed to moisture using humidity cabinets having a high relative humidity (99% RH) and by also exposing the rock dust bed to water through bottom wicking. The dusts were then evaluated for dispersibility after drying using the NIOSH-designed dust dispersion chamber. The anticaking additives were different concentrations of stearic acid, oleic acid, and xylene-based surfactants. All results were compared to a reference rock dust used to conduct large-scale experiments in the Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL), Fairchance, PA. When the untreated dusts were dried after exposure to moisture for one day, no dispersion was measured. However, rock dusts treated with anti-caking agents were readily dispersible even after exposure to moisture for six months. This report details the analysis and characterization of anti-caking additives using the NIOSH-designed dispersion chamber and the 20-L explosion test chamber. INTRODUCTION In order for a coal dust explosion to propagate, five elements are required. In addition to the fire triangle in which three elements are necessary to sustain a fire—fuel (coal dust), heat (ignition source), and an oxidizer (oxygen in air)—a combustible dust explosion requires dispersion of a dust cloud (pressure wave) and confinement of a dust cloud (underground mine entry) (1). Coal dust explosions can originate anywhere in a mine. For example, when a small volume of a flammable methane and air mixture is ignited in a closed end, the high-temperature gases rapidly expand to create a pressure wave, sometimes referred to as a “pioneer wave,” that may steepen into a shock wave as it propagates away from the ignition source. The shock wave produces a wind that disperses the dust preferentially from any elevated and exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, belt structure, cribbing, etc.). Factors that are known to affect the intensity of an explosion are the dust particle size, the location of the dust within the entry, the dust dispersibility, and the volatility of the coal dust (1). Particles less than 75 μm (< 200 mesh) in size are most reactive (2). Dusts that are located on the roof, ribs, and elevated surfaces are more readily dispersed than dusts on the floor. Therefore, application of quality rock dust in sufficient quantities is essential to inert coal dust and to prevent continued flame propagation. 30 CFR 75.402 and 75.403 require 80% total incombustible content be maintained within 40 ft of the face, and 30 CFR 75.2 defines rock dust acceptable for use in underground coal mines. It also defined that “when rock dust is wetted and dried, will not form a cake”.

The image-based On-line Particle Size Analyzer (OPSA)system has been developed at the University of Utah to measure particle size distributions under plant conditions where overlapped and segregated particles are being transported on a moving belt conveyor. Evaluation of the OPSA system at several plant sites has been completed. The results show a consistent agreement between the particle size distributions obtained from the OPSA system and those obtained from laboratory screen analysis of belt samples. These results and the stable performance of the OPSA system during the field tests suggest that continuous quality control of crushed products is possible using the OPSA system.

In producing and selling coal, the coal company is faced with many different parameters by which the quality of its product is evaluated. One type, which we choose to call the economic parameters, includes moisture, ash, sulfur, and Btu&apos;s. These are reasonably well understood by both the coal supplier and the customer, and the dollar values can be placed on them. This is the group of parameters of primary interest to most purchasing agents buying coal. A second group of parameters governs how the coal will behave in the boiler itself and is of primary concern to the engineers designing the boiler and to the men who must operate and maintain it. Since we have not yet learned to put dollar values on these parameters, they generally show up in coal contracts simply as cutoff points, the purchaser simply saying that he will not accept coal outside of certain limits.

AMPS[. has completed a rationed grinding ball test in a 2.93 m x 2.93 m ball mill at Climax Molybdenum Company. The test consisted of purging the ball distribution formed by charging 100%, 76 mm carbon steel balls with a distribution formed by charging 50% 76 mm and 20% 51 mm alloy steel balls. The resulting change in ball surface area yielded improvements in both tons ground and fineness of grind with a significant reduction in total ball consumption. This paper summarizes preliminary studies leading to the plant test, grinding efficiency results, and future plans to optimize the ball charge.

On November 1991, Homestake Mining Co. completed the installation of a $5.7-million, 2.7-kt/d (3000-stpd) flotation circuit into the flowsheet of the McLaughlin Mine in California&apos;s coastal mountain range, about 113 km (70 miles) north of San Francisco. This addition reduced overall operating costs and improved the gold recovery of the low-grade refractory reserves over that expected from direct cyanidation. In addition, flotation provided a means to generate a sulfide concentrate that is used to supplement feed to the pressure oxidation circuit. The McLaughlin operation started in 1985 as the first pressure oxidation plant for treating sulfide refractory ore. During the mine&apos;s short history, efforts have been made to reduce costs and increase production through process development.

After recent acquisitions, including Tamrock, headquartered in Tampere, Finland, the company now has annual sales of more than US$5 billion (SEK 40 billion). With the acquisition of Tamrock, Sandvik has further increased its interests in the mining industry. Sandvik Rock Tools, a familiar name in the mining industry, is one of the world&apos;s leading suppliers of rock-drilling tools. And Tamrock is one of the world&apos;s leading suppliers of drilling machinery, loaders and equipment for rock-excavation operations. Sandvik believes that the two companies combined offer customers "maximum productivity through total system solutions, including machinery, service and tools." In 1997, Tamrock posted sales of US$940 million (SEK 7.5 billion). In addition to its expertise in drilling tools and equipment, Sandvik is supported by its collective resources in specialty steel and cemented carbide. These resources include extensive research and development capabilities, with annual investments in R&D now at about US$150 million. As a result of the R&D programs, internal expansion and acquisitions, the company has nearly doubled in size during the past four years. From 1994 to 1997, nearly US$1 billion was invested in internal growth and another US$825 million has gone towards acquisitions. Return on net assets is now 22% annually. With more than 38,000 employees worldwide, the Sandvik Group is divided into six separate business areas. Each area is responsible for its own R&D, production and sales: ? Sandvik Mining and Construction. Including Tamrock and Sandvik Rock Tools, this business area boasts of offering the most comprehensive range of "rock-working" products. Seismic tomography is one of several additions to the suite of geotechnical engineering tools for use in various underground rock and mineral geologic structures. Seismic tomography is a method for reconstructing a cross section of an object based on attributes of seismic energy that have been transmitted through the object. The in-seam seismic tomogram provides a dataset that can be graphically portrayed in a color-coded format that is then used to infer relative stress concentration (Fig. 1). During the past several years, the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) at its Denver, CO and Twin Cities Research Centers in Minnesota funded several innovative hardware and software developments. These were directed toward use of in-seam seismic tomography for underground geologic strata evaluations. These preliminary investigations have matured into well-defined and field-proven technical advances for improving ground-control decision making in the mining industry.

INTRODUCTION The first phase of the Los Angeles Metro Rail Project consists of 7.1 km (4.4 miles) of subway and stations running through downtown Los Angeles from Union Station to MacArthur Park. Contract A171, the Wilshire/Alvarado Line, involves tunnel construction beneath 7th/Street from the 7th/Flower Station to the Wilshire/Alvarado Station. The project consists of the excavation and lininig of 3000 m (9900 ft) of twin-bore, 6.7 m (22 ft) excavated diameter, 5.5 m (18 ft) finished diameter subway tunnels. The location of the project is shown in Figure 1. The majority of the excavation passed through weak siltstone/ claystone bedrock; although, portions of each tunnel approaching the 7th/Flower Station passed through fine-grained alluvium. Both tunnels were excavated with a digger shield. The project also included the excavation and lining of 6 cross passages, 2 communication rooms and a sump, all at tunnel grade between the two bores. A program of geotechnical instrumentation and building monitoring was performed to detect and document the response of the ground and adjacent structures and facilities to tunnel excavation. The instrumentation program was also intended to provide information that would permit implementation of remedial measures, when and as required, to prevent damage to structures, facilities and utilities along the tunnel alignment. INTRODUCTION The City of Phoenix, Arizona is located in the Phoenix Basin watershed which is prone to flash flooding several times each year. The runoff from these storms moves from the mountains in the north to the Salt River in the south. An extension of Interstate Highway 10 (1-10) will pass through the city east to west to form an Inner Loop through the downtown business district. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The I-10 Inner Loop extension will be a depressed roadway which would intercept the surface drainage of the Phoenix Basin and separate the watershed into two regions. To prevent flooding of the depressed roadway, runoff storm water collected from the northern half of the drainage area will be conveyed beneath the roadway to its natural outlet at the Salt River. A conveyance system composed of pressure tunnels beneath the city, shown in Figure 1, was proposed to achieve this goal . Table A presents the prominent features of each of the tunnels. This paper will describe geologic and engineering parameters specific to Phoenix which were used in the design of a series of tunnels to convey storm water from the I-10 Inner Loop to the Salt River. The design of tunnel initial and final support is described along with support and construction methods used by the Contractor.

P.T. Freeport Indonesia&apos;s latest expansion has increased total mill throughput to 125,000 dry metric tonnes per day. The most recent expansion included the installation of a Semi Autogenous Mill designed to treat more ore than any other single SAG mill currently operating in the world. Also included in the expansion were two large ball mills, rougher and cleaner flotation including conventional and column cells and a regrind circuit. All equipment is supported by a modem distributed control system. This paper describes the design considerations, construction, commissioning and start-up of the SAG concentrator and support facilities and includes an overview of the oreflow and milling facilities.

Aggregate is an essential input to every economy, so governments need to ensure a sustainable supply of these resources through planning. There is also a need to shift from a linear economy to a more circular one, in which wastes are recycled rather than landfilled, so as to increase eco-efficiency. The purpose of the Sustainable Aggregates Planning in South East Europe (SNAP-SEE, SEE/D/0167/2.4/X) project is to develop a Toolbox for Aggregates Planning to assist governments and stakeholders in national, regional, primary and secondary, aggregates planning in southeast European countries. The Toolbox comprises documents on stakeholder consultation, data and analysis methodologies, a vision of best practices in aggregates planning and how to build an aggregates plan. The Toolbox will also support ongoing efforts to enhance minerals policy in the European Union (EU) as called for by the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials. In 2024, Capstone Copper Corp commissioned a new sulfide flotation plant at Mantoverde in the Atacama region of Chile to process copper ore at a design rate of 32,000tpd. The pyrite associated with the copper ore body contains cobalt in solid solution, with Co replacing Fe in the pyrite matrix. As per the existing sulfide flotation flowsheet most of the pyrite is depressed and sent to tailings via the cleaner scavenger tail stream. A new project considers the recovery of the pyrite from the cleaner-scavenger tails via froth flotation to produce a cobaltiferous pyrite concentrate, which is then leached via the existing dynamic copper leach pad to oxidize the pyrite and dissolve the cobalt. The cobalt is recovered from the solution by treating a bleed stream of copper SX raffinate through a continuous, counter-current ion exchange (CCIX) facility. This approach to by-production of cobalt confers numerous benefits, including reduced costs compared with alternative cobalt recovery processes, reduced acid consumption in the heap leach, increased copper production, and reduced acid mine drainage potential due to the removal of pyrite from the mill tailings.
