The western united States is not usually noted for the production of fluorspar; however, many significant fluorspar districts do occur in the Rocky Mountain region and constitute a resource of sizable dimension and major potential. This is particularly true within the area of the West served by the rail lines of the Union Pacific Railroad (see Figure 1). Fluorspar deposits near the Union Pacific have produced over 1.3 million tons of finished fluorspar products from 2.3 million tons of ore. Approximately 80% of this production was of acid-grade and 20% of metallurgical-grade fluorspar. Production of ceramic-grade was negligible. Through the years substantial production has come from eight mining districts. Five of these have produced metallurgical-grade and three acid-grade. The best-known fluorspar producing area in the West is the Jamestown Mining District. It was one of the first producers of fluorspar in the western United States and is estimated to have produced over 500,000 tons of finished fluorspar from over a million tons of ore. The district encompasses approximately 36 square miles in central Boulder County, Colorado, about 9 miles northwest of the City of Boulder. Although small shipments were made from the district as early as 1873 or 1874, significant sustained production was not achieved until 1940 when the General Chemical Company, now a division of the Allied Chemical company, acquired the Alice, Burlington, Chancellor,

The use of cyanides in the extraction of gold and silver is well known.1 Such extractions employ con¬centrations of cyanide in the range of 0.02-0.25 % sodium cyanide equivalent in leaching cycles of 24-48 hours and frequently longer. Copper minerals, even though minor components of precious metal ores, dissolve in these cyanide leaching solutions, consume cyanide, cause fouling of mill solutions, and thus interfere with the precipitation and recovery of gold and silver. 2,3,4 This paper presents a summary of laboratory investigations on the use of cyanide solutions as extractants for copper from various copper-bearing ore fractions. In view of the metal contents involved, it will be apparent that larger quantities of cyanide are required to extract copper than for the extraction of precious metals. In cyanide solutions of concentrations generally favorable to copper extraction, sulfide and oxide copper minerals were found to dissolve rapidly at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. For example, on products in the flotation size range, the major portions (e.g. 65-85%) of the extractable copper frequently dissolved in 2-10 minutes. At coarser grinds, e.g. 100% minus 28 mesh and 100% minus 10 mesh, 75-85% of the total copper was extracted in 30 minutes.

The widespread and increasing use of electrical power for mechanized power has made a tremendous impact on the coal mining industry. It is probably the single most important factor influencing the productivity of a coal mine. In fact, as a part of a study of 62 coal mines in Pennsylvania and northern West Virginia, plus information that was obtained from other sources, it was possible to show a direct correlation between the rise in the use of electrical power and mine productivity, Figure 1. This increased power demand has not always been achieved through proper planning and a careful evaluation of all design parameters, many of which are not even recognized. The result has been increasing problems in power distribution and utilization establishing the need for scientific studies including considerable underground measurements. Because the cost of power for ton of coal produced is generally a relatively low value, inadequate attention is paid its distribution and utilization. Furthermore, a poor system of records and a lack of adequate measurements add further to a paucity of statistical evidence that would permit a rational analysis of overall power costs. However, the direct cost figure alone is highly deceptive; of much greater value is the indirect costs associated with the use (or misuse) of electrical power underground. Success in highly mechanized mining correlates directly with equipment utilization. Today's machines have tremendous potential capacities but profits are measured in terms of performance and not potential. Thus the reliability of electric motors is an extremely important factor for consideration and the effects of all parameters should be carefully evaluated. Thus while studies are continuing on the evaluation of primary and secondary mine electrical systems with interesting results, this paper will be limited to reporting on the results of a study of a specific motor application.

Anaconda's experience with percussion longhole drilling in Butte, Montana, has consisted of six phases: 1. Drilling horizontal blast holes in stopes with push feeds. 2. Ring and parallel blast hole drilling in longhole stopes with bar mounted as well as skid jumbo mounted longhole drifters. 3. Ring and parallel drilling in raise climber shrinkage stoping using special raise climber drilling decks designed and built in Butte, Montana. 4. Parallel longhole drilling in horizontal cut and fill stopes with monorail jumbo. 5. Drilling water drain holes between mine levels. 6. Drilling leach holes through caved zones into old stope workings for leaching purposes. 7. Sample hole drilling.

C. W. Hunt I wish to register strong disagreement with the choices of drilling sites chosen by the Continental Scientific Drilling Committee, while endorsing the stated objectives. Of special significance is the lack of any site involving the metals most needed today in the US, while 9 to 13 km of drilling are allocated to gold and silver districts and 11 to 17 km to base metal (mainly copper) districts. Why is nothing proposed for platinum group or chromite? Is this because the committee did not know of such a site? If so, I offer such a site in California (see Fig. 1). The mineralization shown in Table 1 occurs in a large peridotite body in western Tehama County, CA. Petrography has demonstrated unequivocal evidence of migrated PGE deposited in peridotite and chromite of hypabyssal nature. Active diapirism (due probably to serpentine buoyancy) above a reactivated mantle to surface conduit marks the position of the conduit. Young explosion breccia cemented loosely by volcanic glass and tuff demonstrates the significance of the conduit as the prime source of the various emissions. Deep drilling could result in major metals discoveries as well as shedding light on the grand questions of platinum group mineralization. What role water has played in this occurrence is not yet certain; but chlorine and asphaltite have been detected in and adjacent to native PGM, suggesting a major role for water. The explosion breccia suggests that this excellent site could overlie entrapped geothermal steam.

8.1 INTRODUCTION Under room and pillar mining if the extraction ratio is low, (i.e., < 50%) a pillar can support the overburden without collapse and there will be no surface subsidence whatsoever. In other words, if the pillar sizes are properly determined to support the overburden weight, the roof strata cannot cave and there will be no surface subsidence, provided the entry width is small and properly reinforced so that a continuous roof fall leading to piping or the total collapse of the roof does not occur. Under the prevailing mining conditions in the US if only development mining is em¬ployed in room and pillar mining (i.e., no pillar extraction), the extraction ratio is usually less than 50% and generally no surface subsidence will occur. If pillar mining is employed, surface subsidence may occur, depending on the extraction ratio and the size of the remnant pillars (or stumps) left in the gob. The higher the extraction ratio, the smaller the stump pillars left behind in the gob. As the size of the stump pillars becomes smaller, the possibility of their support¬ing the roof without collapse is smaller. If all stumps are crushed completely, the roof will collapse and surface subsidence will occur. Again, whether surface subsidence occurs, it depends on whether the remaining stumps can support the overburden or not. Therefore, since the weight of the overburden which the stump pillars have to support is proportional to the mining depth, a fixed¬size stump pillar can support the overburden at a shallow depth, but will collapse under greater depths. In this context extraction ratio is not the only parameter for determining whether surface subsidence will occur. Furthermore, during pillar mining a pillar can be cut away in many ways to finally reach the same extraction ratio. Therefore, the safest way to determine whether or not sur¬face subsidence will occur in room and pillar mining is to compare the strength of all stump pillars in the panel of interest with the weight of the overburden that the pillars have to support. If they are too small to support the overburden, surface subsidence will occur. Under normal mining practices the characteristics of surface subsidence profiles vary with methods of mining. In the US there are two types of coal mining methods, i.e., longwall and room and pillar mining. Longwall mining is indisputably a total extraction method, but different percentages of coal recovery are achieved in room and pillar mining. Recovery is much higher for sections with pillar extraction than those without pillar extraction. For those without pillar extraction, coal recovery increases with increasing entry width or decreasing pillar size. For those with pillar extrac¬tion, the total coal recovery depends on the amount of coal ex¬tracted from each pillar which is in turn dependent on the roof conditions and methods of pillar extraction. Bauer and Hunt (1981) analyzed the characteristics of the subsidence profiles due to the three types of mining methods in Illinois. Fig. 8.1 shows the range of locations associated with the following profile features: profile edge, maximum tensile curvature, maximum slope, maxi¬mum compressive curvature, and maximum subsidence. The scat¬ter of the data increases with decreasing percentages of extraction. The profile is much sharper for longwall mining and becomes milder as percentage of extraction decreases; for longwall mining the profile edge is always beyond the opening, while in room and pillar mining it may fall within. The location of maximum tensile strain moves outward, while that of the maximum compressive strain moves inward as the percentage of extraction decreases and the maximum subsidence decreases with decreasing extraction ra¬tio. The general concepts discussed in this chapter may not apply to the entry development sections between two longwall panels where roof caving in both panels are very severe and overlap each other. Consequently, it must be treated differently. 8.2 CASE STUDIES Kohli et al. (1982) described several case studies on surface subsidence due to room and pillar mining with pillar extraction. In one case, the seam was 6 ft thick and ranged from 650 to 800 ft deep. The panel was 720 ft wide (Fig. 8.2) and was developed with seven entries. Each entry was 18 ft wide and the pillars were driven at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Dur¬ing retreating, two additional pillars (pillars J and K) were devel¬oped, two blocks ahead of the pillar line, to take the barrier pillar, 160 ft wide, between panel No. I and No. 2. Pillar extraction began by taking a central slice across the whole panel, beginning from pillar 0 through J. After that, each pillar was sliced by 6 wing-slices, 3 on each side, leaving 4 stumps, 2 on each side. One of each pair was triangular shaped approximately 6 ft wide by 26 ft long. The other was trapezoidal, 26 ft long by 16 ft and 10 ft wide at the upper and lower bases, respectively. This resulted in a total extraction ratio of 85% within the panel. Obviously the stump pillars were not large enough to support the overburden and col¬lapsed completely. The final subsidence profiles were rather smooth, just like those under total extraction (Fig. 8.3). The max¬imum subsidence on Lines A and B was about 3 ft for an average mining height of 6 ft, but the locations of the maximum subsidence were skewed toward panel No. 1. Along Line D, the central por¬tion was flat-bottomed, but the maximum subsidence was only 2 ft, mainly because Line D was only two blocks from the right-side edge. Notice in every profile there was heaving of as much as 0.3 ft, beyond the edges above the solid coal. In another case (Fig. 8.4), the seam was 6 ft thick under 650 to 850 ft cover. Three panels, 710, 400, and 350 ft wide, respec¬tively, were extracted side by side. The entries were 18 ft wide and the pillars at 88 ft center-to-center between entries and crosscuts. Pillar extraction was practiced the same way as described previ¬ously. According to the mine maps, there was no barrier pillar left between the adjacent panels. Thus after extraction the three panels formed a common gob of more than 1460 ft wide. This was re¬flected in the development of the subsidence profile along the county road. After Panel No. I was mined, the maximum subsi¬dence of 1.2 ft occurred at Monument No. 1. This was increased to 1.6 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 2 and went to a further 1.8 ft after the extraction of Panel No. 3. The final maximum subsidence of 4.3 ft occurred at Monuments No. 6 through No. 8, while the remaining portion of the county road showed rebound. However it must be noted that the subsidence profiles were rather bumpy and fluctuated, perhaps an indication of the irregular stump pillars that were left and crushed at various time after mining. Underground mining environments bring with them occupational health and safety issues with some severe dangers, such as mine explosions. During such events, miners may escape using main access openings or find a safe haven like a refuge alternative (RA) to wait and be rescued and evacuated to the surface. In this paper, RAs are explained with their early and current applications. A classification as permanent and portable is detailed, depending on conditions and abilities. This classification is followed by the utilization and survivability of RAs with the requirements and recommendations of the main mining countries. Based on the utilization and survivability constraints, basic human requirements, waiting for a rescue team, and the required physical specifications of RAs during the events are analyzed in detail for various countries with their regulations. Among these, the specification of resistance to explosion is discussed in particular, and studies in the literature are examined in terms of structural deformation.

Seventeen percent of US coal production now comes from the 19 surface coal mines in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming. The Powder River Coalfield, which coincides with this topographic and structural basin, is unique to the conterminous US, in that it contains an estimated 934.4 Gt (1.03 trillion st) of in-place coal resources. At least 13.2 Gt (14.6 billion st) is a compliant, strippable reserve base. In 1993, an estimated 162 Mt (179 million st), or 98% of the coal mined in this Wyoming coalfield, came from the thick - average 30.5 m (100 ft) - subbituminous, Wyodak coalbed, or from the Anderson and Canyon coals in the one mine where the Wyodak is split into two separate coalbeds. The other 2.7 Mt (3 million st) of coal mined in the Powder River Basin in 1993 came from the School, Badger, Monarch and Deitz No. 3 coalbeds. In this "world class" coalfield, there are at least 13 other persistent, 3 to 15 m (10 to 50 ft) thick, coalbeds as well as the Big George and Lake De Smet coalbeds, which are each 61 m (200 ft) or more thick in places. None of these latter 13 coals are mined at this time.

The title of my talk today might lead you to two logical conclusions: The industry is faced with a problem that requires a solution and after discussing the problem I will offer a solution. The first conclusion is painfully accurate. One need only look at the accident statistics to be aware of the problem. During the eight-year period 1954 through 1962, the United States Bureau of Mines reports that falls of rock and coal accounted for 1,435 of the 2,516 fatal injuries that occurred in underground bituminous coal mines. Some improvement was made during 1962. For the first time since records have been kept, falls of rock and coal accounted for less than 50 per cent of the underground fatal injuries. The 105 deaths recorded in 1962 indicate that a great amount of work remains to be done in this area. As to the second conclusion, let me assure you at the outset that I have no panacean solution; however, I do propose to discuss some aspects of the problem and some possible methods of solution. What methods of solution are now, or have been employed in attempting to solve the problem? More specifically, what methods have you and your associates used? Has it been an orderly well thought out approach to the entire problem, or has it been a somewhat piecemeal approach which tackled the immediate problem and left the total problem for another day? Perhaps a new approach may be in order.

The general theory for the description of seismic sources is briefly discussed. The effect of excavations on seismic radiation is considered. Expressions for seismic source mechanisms in terms of the geometrical and mechanical parameters of source processes are provided for the following cases: fault slip and shear failure in a confined environment, dynamic stress fracturing around a tunnel, rock fall, landslide and sudden subsidence. A classification of seismic events in mines based on source mechanisms is introduced. The classification separates blast-, slip- and crush-type events. Various approaches of analysis of source mechanisms involving forward modelling and inversion are discussed. The following examples demonstrating the utility of source mechanisms in mining are presented: forensic analysis of damaging seismic events, assessment of the increase in the depth of failure for dynamic stress fracturing around tunnels and its duration, examination of the rockmass deformation regime, assessment of deformation around tunnels using crush-type events, identification and parameterisation of weak geological structures, stress inversion from slip-type events. Finally, the requirements for seismic data to ensure high quality source mechanism solutions are briefly reviewed and future challenges in the interpretation and utilisation of seismic source mechanisms in mines are speculated on.

The open stope room and pillar method of mining is used throughout Ozark Lead Company&apos;s underground mine located at Sweetwater, Missouri. This method of mining produces an approximate overall ore extraction of 80%. Pillar recovery, on a limited and experimental basis, was started in January of 1979 to determine the maximum size underground opening that could be mined safely. Monitoring the roof and surrounding pillars for potential failure during this pillar recovery process was accomplished by utilizing a simple rod extensometer to measure roof sag. Boreholes 7.5cm in diameter were drilled 3.5m into the roof to spot any separations or cracks that might have propagated between the bedded layers of rock. Underground openings 85m in length by 46m in width have been mined successfully without roof or surrounding pillar failure. Continued measurements to establish long term results will be necessary.

Both hydrometallurgical and vapometallurgical processes often involve ores that have been previously ground and size classified. When the valuable mineral is substantially liberated, the chemical reaction is likely to occur on the particle surface and the particle core will shrink as the reaction proceeds. If the chemical reaction products are solid materials then a solid shell, usually porous, will form around the shrinking core. This is known as the core/shell or topochemical reaction model. Using a spherical approximation for the particles, equations have been developed to express the extent of chemical conversion of the particle, depending on which one of the following process or mass transport steps is rate controlling:1 (1) chemical reaction at the particle surface, (2) diffusion through the thickening reaction product shell or (3) mass transport through a boundary layer surrounding the particle. In a previous paper2 these equations were coupled with the Gates -Gaudin-Schuhmann equation 3 4 describing the distribution of particle sizes resulting from comminution of rocks and other brittle solids to develop reaction yield curves expressing the weight fraction of metal or other valuable component of the feed that was chemically converted as a function of residence time. This was done for (a) batch, (b) continuous plug flow and (c) continuous back-mix flow (continuous stirred tank) reactors or process vessels. To make the curves of general rather than special utility, the residence time (average residence time for back-mix reactors) was normalized to a dimensionless time by dividing by the time required to completely chemically convert the largest particle in the feed to reac-

Production at Freeport Indonesia&apos;s Ertsberg open pit copper-gold mine started in 1972 at a rate of 7.5 kt/d (8270 stpd). Mill throughput remained at that rate for several years until the discovery of the Ertsberg East (GBT) ore body. This discovery prompted three succes¬sive expansion stages from 1981 to 1988 that boosted production to 20 kt/d (22,000 stpd). In 1988, the discovery of the huge Grasberg porphyry copper deposit launched an era of much larger expansions. The first of these was the installation of a fourth primary mill in 1989 that increased throughput to 32 kt/d (35,270 stpd). That was followed by an expansion of the crushing and screening plant and in 1991 the addition of a new south concentrator to bring production to 57 kt/d (62,830 stpd). The addition of a primary ball mill and the changeout of the original Denver flotation cells in 1993 brought production to its current level of 66 kt/d (72,750 stpd).

Ten years ago, only 3% of Consol&apos;s underground coal production resulted from using the longwall mining method. Today, that figure has grown to 45% and has helped the Pittsburgh-based concern fuel an upswing in productivity. The company reported that productivity at its underground mines, excluding labor strike periods, increased 24% between 1978 and 1981. Last year, an additional 8% increase was achieved. Efforts such as improved safety, training, engineering, and maintenance programs as well as the closing of unproductive mines has contributed to these gains, according to Joseph M. Richards, Consol&apos;s executive vice president of operations. But, Richards adds, a great part of the credit goes to longwall mining. What is Longwall Mining? To fully appreciate the advantages of longwall, one needs an understanding of how mining is done by other methods. For instance, in both conventional and continuous mining, rooms or tunnels are dug in the coal seam. Pillars of coal are left standing to support the roof as mining moves forward in the seam. In conventional mining, a slot is cut in the base of the seam and holes for blasting are drilled. After blasting, the coal is loaded. A more efficient method - continuous mining - uses a machine that combines cutting and loading. Longwall mining, by contrast, works backwards from the end of a panel. Two parallel sets of tunnels (development panels) are cut into a seam with continuous mining machines, then connected with a set of crosscuts at the far end. Min¬ing then proceeds back toward the entrance. Longwall mining employs some very productive machines. Large drum shearers, for example, run on a track along the length of the coal face for some 150-180 m (500-600 ft). The shearers cut the coal which falls onto a conveyor system or pan that also runs the entire length of the face. The longwall crew works under a roof of heavy steel supports called shields. As the coal is removed, shearers, pans, and shields are moved forward by hydraulic rams. The roof is allowed to collapse behind the shields. In addition to increasing production, longwall mining is considered to be safer because the miners work under strong steel shields. New designs have made them more rugged and maintenance free, as well as more stable on soft mine floors. Early roof supports, called chocks, had gaps in the roof canopies. The new roof shields now cover the entire working area and are better able to prevent roof material from falling into the working area, thereby improving safety and productivity. Longwall mining also results in a cleaner product in many mines. If the first layer of rock over the coal seam is thin, it might have to be removed with the coal in a room-and-pillar operation so a

The possibility of using surfactants as wetting agents for the suppression of sulphide ore dust has been investigated. Numerous surfactants were examined to determine their characteristics and to investigate their ability to improve the wetting of the sulphide ore dust. However, the surfactants selected as suitable dust suppressors proved to have a negative effect on the flotation of the ore contaminated with such reagents. A method was developed to eliminate the detrimental influence of dust-suppressing surfactants. It consisted of surfactants adsorption on activated carbon and separation of loaded carbon prior to flotation. The technique is simple and requires minimal changes in the plant flowsheet.

For mineral processing spirals, mathematical force equilibrium models are sought to extend the spiral performance envelop. In Part 1 of this report, a complete geometric description of the helical spiral and its trough or channel contour is provided. The secondary circulatory fluid motion in the transverse direction that develops when water flows down a tightly turning curvilinear path and its implications for gravity separation are discussed. Different forces that act on the particle during its passage through the spiral are enumerated and quantified for a better appreciation of their relative contributions and roles in the separation process. Three force equilibrium models from the hydrology literature on sed iment transport are employed to simulate a typical spiral. While the results are promising in that the models mimic the broad performance characteristics of the spiral, what is needed is a more general spiral model taking explicit cognizance of the missing components essential to the spiral description. These are such components as centrifugal force and the steep tangential slope of the channel deck. Results of this latter exercise are deferred to Part 2.

The Lafayette Bluff tunnel, currently under construction for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), will be among the widest highway tunnels in the United States. The 199-meter tunnel is being constructed in a closely jointed, variably weathered diabase rock mass. Cover above the tunnel crown ranges from 4 meters to 27 meters, and is less than the tunnel excavated width of 18.3 meters for about 60 percent of its length. These factors dictated special support and lining design, limitations on excavation sizes and required sequences for support installation. Tunnel excavation is by controlled blasting, with multiple top headings and bench. Rock support and lining consists of external portal beams, rockbolts and reinforced shotcrete. A final concrete lining provides structural support for the rock mass and the membrane waterproofing system.

A variety of grades of very white muscovite mica are now being produced from sedimentary sands and clays in Central Georgia. The mica is naturally concentrated near the base of the lens-shaped kaolin deposits and also disseminated in associated quartz sands. The same weathering and bacterial alteration processes which have transformed the kaolins from dark organic muds to white pigment-grade industrial clays have also removed discoloring iron from the micas and developed unusually white muscovite. Further, chemical alteration has removed some potassium from the muscovite atomic structure, resulting in an easily delaminated mica which can be cleaved to unusually fine, high bulking, high aspect ratio products. The peculiar alteration history of these sedimentary micas enables production of some of the whitest, finest particle size, and thinnest aspect ratio muscovite mica products on the world market today. Raw mica feed is obtained from kaolin and sand processing by-products, and also from beneath the useful base of abandoned kaolin mines. The processed ultrafine and filler grade muscovite mica products are used for paint, plastics, cosmetics, mold release, thermal and electrical insulation, epoxy, and dry wall joint cement markets.

Introduction Coal is the US&apos;s largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country&apos;s electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. During its modem era, the southern Powder River Basin (PRB) in Wyoming has grown from meager origins in the early 1970s to become one of the most important coal-producing regions in the United States. In 1993, production and sales of southern Powder River Basin coal exceeded 190 Mt (209 million st), or about 20% of the US coal industry. Despite the remote location of the PRB relative to its potential markets, most coal industry observers anticipate continued strong growth to meet utility compliance plans for Phases I and II of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA). This article is an overview of supply and demand issues concerning the marketing of southern PRB coal. It reviews the events leading up to the recent run on spot coal and offers a forecast of demand and prices.
