In the sintering of iron ores, the partial substitution of anthracite coal for coke breeze has been considered to be an effective way of reducing emissions and improvement in sintering properties. In the present study, the combustion characteristics of the anthracite coal and coke breeze were investigated and its influence on product sinter quality and sinter flue gases is being monitored. Pot trials are carried out with different coke breeze ratios, 0%, 40%, 50%, 60%, and 100%. It is found that as the percentage of anthracite coal is increased from 0 to 100%, the sintering time decreased from 24 to 20 min, and the productivity increased from 2.25 to 2.60 t/h/m2. Up to 60% anthracite coal substitution Tumbler index (+ 6.3 mm%), Product yield (+ 5 mm%), and fines generation (− 5 mm%) is found 62.29%, 85.17%, and 15.33%; moreover, hematite ( Fe2O3), magnetite ( Fe3O4), calcium ferrite phases ( CaFe2O4, CaFe3O5), and Silico ferrite of calcium and aluminum (SFCA) are major mineral phases found during microstructural analysis of product sinter. Water occupies a dual role in our industrial society. It is the indispensable raw material, essential to life itself. It is equally an industrial nuisance, interfering with the production of industrial minerals, making construction difficult, flooding valuable land, and generally producing problems because it is in the wrong place at the critical time. The legal position of water as a nuisance, and the counter measures to be taken, have been well established procedures for determining the responsibility for damage caused by water, and the organization of drainage districts and flood control and levee districts have been legally tested many times. Thus there is rather adequate legal doctrine concerning water, the common enemy. But recently efforts have been made to regularize the position of water as a useful, industrial, commodity. Such laws are not new to the West, where the doctrine of appropriation for beneficial use is slowly becoming the water law. Elsewhere the University of Michigan has produced a "model" water law and efforts are being made to induce all of the states to use this law, or a slight variation of it, as the basis for legislation. There are many serious criticisms of the proposed "model"-law, and the writer strongly opposes many of the provisions. But the fact remains that water is, in itself, so useful and essential that laws have been, and will be, passed to insure the orderly development of our water resources and to prevent waste. The, most important aspect of these "water-use" laws is that, wise or unwise, the existing laws and the proposed laws have been "water oriented". "Water oriented" means that it has been tacitly assumed that the beneficial use of water, either surface water or ground water, is the overriding consideration.

Basic laboratory tests initiated the. Rock Mechanics program. The stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio, the uniaxial rock strengths, Mohr's envelope, the stress at failure, and creep were investigated. A series of underground problems were then approached using this information; and various field measuring devices, most of which were developed by the Bureau of Mines. Initially, stress concentrations near mine openings were evaluated using the stress relief technique. This required an accurate determination of the pre-mining stress field. Later, stress concentrations associated with the cave line .sere studied. After about thirty stress reliefs over an appropriate time interval the effects of one type of mining could be compared against another. The microseismic technique was used to investigate a possible application of warning devices near the cave line. A study of mane reorientation was made Problems related to the shape and size of pillars and barriers were studied. Partial extraction mining systems were evaluated. The effectiveness of roof bolting patterns were examined. Control of roof stresses was attempted. A new system of mining in heavy ground has been developed using the information secured in the Rock Mechanics program without this system, mining in more than one instance would Nave been next to impossible. Indeed; from this one discovery alone, the Rock Mechanics program has paid off in improved safety as well as in dollars.

The application and use of steel fibre reinforced concrete in precast tunnel lining design is a growing trend due to its advantages in performance over plain concrete, and ease of manufacture compared to traditionally reinforced concrete. However, the design process and performance characteristics of the material are poorly served by current codes and standards. This paper provides some basic design guidance for segmental linings, and compares the material properties for the different material options. A typical example is considered to compare the possible results of lining arrangement and thicknesses for a plain, reinforced, and fibre reinforced design solution.

I have been asked by the Society of Mining Engineers to present a paper on Inco Limited's Indonesian nickel project as a case study in the financing of large overseas mining projects. I welcome this opportunity It is a story worth telling not only because the project itself represents a significant human achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. The paper will be divided into four sections: (i) a brief history of the project, (ii) a critical appraisal of the project's financing plan in terms of the goals that we sought to achieve, (iii) some comments on certain factors underlying the relative success of the financing plan, and (iv) the contributions that the engineering staffs must make to a successful financing plan. The paper will not present a technical assessment of the project since Inco Limited has been asked to submit a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of the AIME in February 1979.

Ceremonies for the induction of four mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be held Saturday, Sept. 22, 2007 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion (Museum Convention Center) in Leadville, CO. The four inductees are James Harold Courtright (1908-1986), Dr. Howard L. Hartman (1924-2002), Charles Washington Merrill (1869-1956) and Kenyon E. Richard (1915-1993). The inductions will bring to 197 the number of mining “greats” whose engraved photographs and biographical sketches are installed in the National Mining Hall of Fame.

Metallurgical evaluation of autogenous grinding of Anaconda's Berkeley Pit ores indicated that tonnage throughput increases, at a finer flotation feed size, were possible by converting autogenaus mills to steel ball mills. In addition, initial test work showed that the improved grind resulted in slight recovery gains in subsequent flotation processing.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

Roof bolting typically follows the extraction of a commodity to help keep the roof from collapsing. During 2004 to 2013, roof bolter operators had the highest number of machinery-related injuries, accounting for 64.7 percent, at underground coal mines. This paper analyzes U.S. roof bolter fatal and nonfatal lost-time injury data at underground work locations for all commodities from 2004 through 2013 and determines risk indices for six roof bolting tasks. For fatal and nonfatal incidences combined, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were bolting, handling of materials, setting the temporary roof support (TRS), drilling, tramming, and traversing. For fatalities, the roof bolting tasks in order of the highest to lowest risk index were handling of materials, setting the TRS, bolting, drilling, traversing, and tramming. Age was found to be a significant factor. Severity of injury, indicated by days lost, was found to increase with increasing age as well as with increasing experience, largely due to the confounding of age and experience. The operation of the roof bolting machine used in underground mining should be a research priority given the high frequency and severity of incidents. The results also suggest that temporal factors may exist, so additional research is warranted to better understand these factors and potentially develop interventions. This research provides a datadriven foundation from which future research can be conducted for safety interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of incidences involving the roof bolter activities of bolting, handling of materials, and setting the TRS.

This research sought to facilitate improved stakeholder analysis in mining by providing further insights into the preferences of local community members using discrete choice theory. While recent research has demonstrated the usefulness of discrete choice theory in mining stakeholder analysis, no previous work has examined which discrete choice model (DCM) is most suitable. This paper provides a research note on a case study in a mining community that was performed to compare three DCMs. After a thorough examination of the benefits and deficiencies of all models, this study concludes that the conditional logit model stratified by questions is the most useful DCM for mining stakeholder analysis. The recommendation is based on the usefulness and accuracy (ability to match the survey data) of this model.

Joined modeling of stressed state and induced seismicity is a means to join geomechanics with seismic observations. When applied to quantifying rockburst hazard, it provides, on one hand, estimations in terms of mechanics, such as stress concentration, and, on the other hand, in statistical terms of the risk analysis developed in mining seismology. The modeling became possible due to progress in computers and numerical methods. However, despite tremendous increase of computational abilities, the joined modeling is still quite time expensive. To make it available for wide use and real time simulations, there is need to reduce the time cost of its key stages: calculation of stresses, caused by mining, and simulation of seismic events, induced by these stresses. The present work aims to decrease the time cost. The stages are time costly because of the same reason, which is a very large number N (up to millions) of elements, representing rock structure, openings and flaws. This leads to immense computational complexity (roughly of order N2) of conventional accounting for pairwise interactions between the elements. The complexity may be notably reduced, when employing the fact that interactions decrease with growing distance between elements. Specifically, the fast multipole methods (FMM) avoid the complexity N2, by employing translations of far-fields from whole collections of sources. This reduces the complexity to the order 22, where p is the number of terms involved in a single translation, is the number of translations, and is the dimension of the quantity translated. Still, for conventional FMM, the complexity remains too high to routinely perform joined modeling of stresses and seismicity.

In this study, the effect of colemanite and calcined colemanite (CC) addition on the properties of iron ore pellets is studied. The pellets are prepared in a lab without and with 0.2% colemanite and varying amounts of CC from 0 to 1.0 wt%in steps of 0.2%. A reference pellet is prepared under typical plant conditions, and the properties of the reference pellet are considered as the base value for improving the cold compressive strength (CCS) while maintaining the other parameters at an acceptable limit without altering the pellet. The study also aims to provide a detailed characterization of colemanite and calcined colemanite to better understand their behaviour during firing. The lab-scale results show that the CCS of pellets made with 0.2% colemanite was reduced by 222 points (60%) as compared to the reference pellets due to crack formation during firing. The results show an improvement in the CCS of the indurated pellets with CC dosage up to 0.4%, and decreasing strength is noted thereafter. It is observed that the swelling index increases with the increase in calcined colemanite dosage. To simulate plant conditions, reference pellets and pellets with optimized CC dosage were fired in a plant furnace.

Rolling disc cutters are the business end of hard rock and mixed face tunnel boring machines (TBMs). Since their first successful employment on a TBM over fifty years ago, disc cutter technology has constantly evolved, allowing modern TBMs to excavate very hard and abrasive rock efficiently. Disc cutters have also been employed successfully on earth pressure balance (EPB) and slurry machines, cutting rock under water and ground pressure. The range of materials excavated by machines today is broader, excavation rates higher and cutter costs lower than ever before, proving the value of investment in cutter development. This paper describes recent improvements in disc cutter components including cutter ring materials and processing, as well as improvements in lubricants, bearings, seals and cutter condition monitoring. These developments have resulted in more reliable cutters capable of operating in a wide range of geological conditions. Ultimately these improvements result in a better value for both contractors and project owners.

"Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of standing support and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data.INTRODUCTIONA hydraulic load cell, more commonly known as a flat jack or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of the roof-to-floor supports. These standing or roof-to-floor supports include, but are not limited to pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports.Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. Preloading helps to keep the supports, such as timbers props and cribs, in place during the dynamic loading associated with blasting (Barczak and Tadolini, 2004).Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application; common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed, as shown in Figure 1. These load cells are produced in South Africa and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the application (Barczak, 2003). The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19-gauge or 1.11 mm (0.04 inch) thickness; the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance-seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow fluid to fill the unit, and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1,724 kPa (250 psi), the pressure relief valve keeps the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure.The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements, a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump, or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells."

Each year, hundreds of mine workers are involved in machinery-related accidents. Many of these accidents involve inadequate or improper use of lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. To mitigate the occurrence of these accidents, new safety methods are needed to monitor access to hazardous areas around operating machinery, improve documentation/monitoring of maintenance that requires shutdown of the machinery, and prevent unexpected startup or movement during machine maintenance activities. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is currently researching the application of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to provide intelligent machine monitoring as part of a comprehensive LOTO program. This paper introduces NIOSH’s two-phase implementation of an IoT-based intelligent machine monitoring system.

Because shape is an assessment of the three-dimensional form of a particle, it may be described in terms of sphericity (?), which is a measure of how closely a particle approaches a spherical configuration. In this study, Darcy?s law and the Kozeny-Carman model for fluid flow through porous media were applied to packed beds to determine the sphericity (?) of apatite particles. The beds were composed of glass spheres or particles of apatite (igneous from Brazil and sedimentary from the United States) of three classes of size (Class 1: -297 +210 µm; Class 2: -210 +149 µm; Class 3: -149 +105 µm). Glass spheres were used to validate the model because of its known sphericity (? = 1.00). Apatite particles, either igneous or sedimentary, showed very close values for particle sphericity (? ? 0.6). Observations on particle images conducted by scanning electron microscopy illustrated that igneous (? = 0.623) and sedimentary (? = 0.644) particles of apatite of Class 2 predominantly exhibit elongated shape. The close value of particle sphericity (? ? 0.6) showed by either igneous or sedimentary apatite may be justified by the similarity in particle shape.

An 8.5-km (5-mile) conveyor has gone into operation in western Turkey to eco¬nomically transport crushed lignite from the mine area to a power plant. This conveyor has replaced trucks as the principal mode of transporting the lignite. One principal element of Turkish govern¬ment policy is the country's commitment to increase electricity supplies for mining and other industries. Lignite is an important source of electric power supply in Turkey. Production was about 48 Mt (53 million st) in 1987, amounting to more than 20% of the total power supply in Turkey. In the western Anatolia supply network, it plays a major role for power generation. Deposits are located in the Soma region of western Turkey. The lignite is of low quality, deposits are scattered, and the terrain is dif¬ficult and hilly. These conditions demand an economical and technically feasible method of transporting the raw material from mining areas to the central thermal power plant. The Soma power plant is located about 120 km (75 miles) northeast of Izmir, near the coast of Aegean Sea. An overland conveyor of a unique design has gone into commercial operation at the Soma power plant facilities of the Turkish state electricity organization, Türkiye El¬ektrik Kurumu (TEK). The conveyor re¬places truck transport to ensure economical use of the lignite deposits. Computer-aided design (CAD) added more precision, qual¬ity, and flexibility of engineering in design activities. It also helped quick realization of the project that was executed in cooperation with the German company Krupp Industri¬etechnik and the Turkish firm Gama Endüstri AS. Unique features The conveyor includes several major features rarely combined in a single flight: Overland long distance conveyor. • Horizontal curves. -Steep vertical concave and convex curves to match the difficult terrain. Down-hill conveying. Frequency converter drives with vari¬ able belt speed. Generating operation mode to backfeed the energy to the network. Layout The 8.5 km (5 mile) long conveyor takes the -200 mm (-8 in.) lignite from the primary crushing plant located near the mine to the central, final crushing plant located in the stockyard area near the power station. The drive and belt tensioning assemblies are situated near the tail end of the flight. The high voltage switchgear is housed in a room in the primary crushing plant build¬ing upstream from the conveyor flight. The frequency converters are installed in the low voltage switchgear room located below the control room within the primary crushing plant building. During the preliminary design stages of the Illinois Division of Natural Resources(DNR) building, it was discovered that an old coal mine was present some 70 m (220 ft) beneath the building site. The new DNR building to be constructed is 36 m (120 ft)wide and 134 m (440 ft) long. It has three stories above grade and abasement level. The building is oriented north-south and has east and west ponds next to it (Fig. 1). The building is located on the State Fairgrounds in Springfield, IL. Given the history of surface subsidence of these underground coal mines in the Springfield area, there was concern about the potential for future subsidence at the building site. Mine subsidence events in the area have resulted in more than 0.9 m (3 ft) of settlement and have caused significant structural damage.
