Pyrite cinder is generated by roasting pyrite for sulfur dioxide production. It contains up to 62% iron, but also may contain other hazardous or toxic materials such as Zn, Pb, As, T1, Cd, Cu, Sn and S. Furthermore, the physical characteristics are not properly suited for conventional sintering. As a result pyrite cinder is considered to be unsuitable for iron and steelmaking or for outside storage because of its potential for causing environmental problems. In recent years industrialized nations have put increasing pressure on the manufacturers to either use such waste products or properly dispose of them. In this study, solutions to both the iron recovery and disposal problem were attempted by pelletizing the pyrite fines with internal carbon. The pellets, after hydrothermal hardening, were reduced and melted in a furnace for hot metal production. Hot metal of usuable quality was produced and the hazardous materials were either collected with the fumes or in the slag.

In a mineral processing plant, the determination of a preventive maintenance schedule is one of the most important maintenance policies. In this study, to determine the preventive maintenance schedule for the Emet Colemanite Mineral Processing Plant in Turkey, a mean quality control chart was constructed using the historical concentrate B2O3 grade data. The effect of preventive maintenance scheduling on B2O3 grades was monitored using the mean quality control chart. It was determined that recovery increased after each preventive maintenance scheduling. Close examination of the mean quality control charts indicated that there were three periods that showed different grade characteristics. These were identified as the period ?prior to preventive maintenance,? the period ?after preventive maintenance? and the period ?requiring preventive maintenance.? These periods were compared as two independent samples by using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. Application of this test for interpretation of the mean quality control chart enabled the authors to analyze the system effectively, and it showed that the preventive maintenance for this plant should be scheduled at four-month intervals.

Collaboration between education providers is the key to long-term sustainability and improved quality in mining education. The mining industry is now, more than ever, an industry doing business on a global basis. Staff are recruited by global mining companies in many different countries and can find themselves deployed anywhere in the world. The mining engineer of tomorrow must be willing to take on this international challenge, and must be educated to a level where he or she has a comprehensive grounding in technical aspects of mining engineering, but also a well-founded appreciation of management, social, environmental and cultural issues that may be encountered around the world. In order to deliver such an education, academic providers must collaborate at both a national and international level. This paper provides an overview of progress that has been made in Australia through the national joint venture ? Min¬ing Education Australia (MEA). Supported by the mining industry in Australia, through the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA), MEA has been operational since 2007 and is seeing the development of a range of innovative courses and delivery methods, together with a high level of staff cooperation across the country. MEA has also commenced some international teaching initiatives that are seen as a catalyst for a far greater degree of international collaboration in the future. Such activity is not only to the benefit of the students who are taught by experts from around the world, but it also ensures that individual univer¬sity programs remain viable in terms of staffing numbers and financial performance. The paper also presents some statistics on recent upward trends in mining engineering student numbers from around the world, in response to the global shortage of mining engineers.

China has made great progress in thick coal seam mining, commonly characterized by longwall top-coal caving mining and single-pass longwall mining with a large cutting height. At present, the maximum mining thickness of longwall top-coal caving reaches 20 m while that of single-pass longwall mining approaches 8.8 m. The top-coal caving–related technologies have significantly improved the mining efficiency of thick coal seams and have also made a great contribution to the centralized underground mining of coal. Thus, the number of underground coal mines is greatly reduced in China. However, due to the increase of the mining height and the changes in mining operations, the overburden movement caused by the mining of thick coal seams is more intense, and the influence scope is larger, which brings a series of new problems on ground control of longwall faces. Unfortunately, the term "control" has a negative connotation in the minds of many of our operating plant personnel. Whereas the opposite is true of those associated with research and technical centers in our industry. The magnitude of this difference in opinion and actual experience has often proved to be a major factor influencing the success or failure of process control applications. Through the years, many plant people have endured a number of unsuccessful attempts by "outside" people to "optimize" their plants; and these experiences have proved to have had quite a callousing effect on them. On the other hand, in many plants, successful process control efforts have made firm allies of the operating personnel, and have increased the number of metallurgical people who are well qualified and experienced in process control. The instrumentation industry, computer industry, and the mining industry's ability to quantify what is really happening in our processes have grown and developed rapidly since the first control efforts were made in the 1930's (1). Because of this-,: new control opportunities are becoming increasingly more feasible and older well established ones are becoming even more practical and necessary with regard to the economic s of our industry.

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. Sixteen companies mined fuller’s earth in 11 states during 2004. Production during 2004, based on a preliminary survey of fuller’s earth producers, was 3.96 Mt (4.3million st) valued at $340 million. This compared with3.6 Mt (3.9 million st) during 2003, valued at $346 million. The 3.96 Mt (4.3 million st) probably includes some crude clay tonnage. And production of finished product probably was closer to 3.2 Mt (3.5 million st) in 2004. Georgia was the leading producer state of attapulgite-type fuller’s earth, followed by Florida. Georgia also was the leading producer state for montmorillonite-type fuller’s earth. It was followed, in descending order, by Mississippi, Missouri, Florida, Virginia, Illinois, California, Tennessee, Kansas and Texas.

Limestone-based technology for arsenic removal from water is an innovative and promising method. The technology offers the potential for low-cost disposal of a stable waste product after arsenic removal, either in an ordinary landfill or by encapsulation in concrete. Leaching research described in this paper shows that the limestone waste, after encapsulation in concrete, passes the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Leaching was less than 0.05 mg/L, which is 1/100 of the U.S. EPA?s standard for disposal of arsenic in a landfill. Disposal of arsenic-enriched waste is critical for commercial viability of arsenic-removal technologies. Low-cost disposal gives the limestone-based method an advantage that could help communities meet the new maximum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion for arsenic in drinking water. The ability to recycle the waste material in concrete could add a significant economic benefit, further reducing overall costs.

Concentradora "Dana Aida" (100 t/d capacity) was built in 1971-1972 to treat dumps and ores containing mixed oxide-sulfide copper-gold-silver minerals from two veins. The veins, Don Felipe and aria are about 150 m apart, but are distinctly different mineralogically. The deposit is near San Juan de Guadalupe, Durango. Mexico. All new process equipment was manufactured locally, in or near Torreon, Coahuila. Sampling, ore testing, flowsheet design, plant design, drawings purchasing, financing, etc. was planned and directed by two engineers. Construction was executed by local miners and common labor (largely agricultural). The paper presents detailed costs for equipment and construction. The subsequent breaking-in operation is discussed.

In late 1989, LAC Minerals purchased 65% of Bond International Gold and as a result became controlling shareholder of the El Indio Mine through Bond and San Jose. El Indio is a world class, complex sulphide gold deposit located in the hydrothermal alteration belt of the Andes mountains in the 4th Region of Chile. The mine is located in the high Andes about 185 km east of La Serena at an elevation of 4000 meters. The 1450 workers at El Indio live in the mine camp at 3200 m and on days off are bussed to La Serena. The El Indio mine was started in 1979 by St. Joe Minerals Corp., bought by Bond in 1987 and subsequently by LAC in 1989. The mine has produced 2.7 million oz. of gold, 9. 5 million oz. of silver and 170,000 t of copper since start of operation. The mill is currently operating at a rate of 2850 t/d and producing a copper/gold concentrate which is roasted to produce a copper/gold calcine and high quality, saleable crude As203• A small proportion of the precious metals are also produced as bullion from the leach circuit. Total production during 1989 was 224,197 ounces of gold, 1,309,342 ounces of silver and 26,968 tonnes of copper. The average cash cost of production for the period was U.S. $96 per ounce of gold, net of by-product credits. The average realized price was $5.30 per ounce of silver and $1.14 per pound of copper.

Deepwater discharges of sulfide flotation tailings have been practiced for several decades. Oxygen penetration and organic matter content in such environments are the two major factors that determine their reduction-oxidation condition and hence the rate of sulfide mineral dissolution under such discharge environments. In this study, the effects of solution redox potential and pH on the dissolution of some heavy metals from sulfide flotation tailings were examined. Zn, Pb and Cu concentrations in solution were all higher at a higher redox potential and lower pH. Dissolved Zn concentrations reached 100 ppm even at a low redox potential of 105 mV and near neutral pH after 33 days. Pb concentrations were below 2 ppm at 105 mV and near neutral pH after 165 days. At 105 mV, the Cu concentrations were below 0.2 ppm at near neutral pH after 165 days. At pH 2.3, the Fe concentrations were higher at 420 mV than at 105 mV. But at pH 6.8, the Fe concentrations were lower at 420 mV than at 105 mV, due to the oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+ and the subsequent precipitation of ferric hydroxide. Arsenic concentrations in solution were all less than 0.002 ppm. For Zn, Cu and Fe, no significant differences were observed between the tests in solutions prepared using seawater and those using distilled water. However, Pb concentrations reached higher levels in solutions prepared using seawater.

Extensive testing in the past ten years has shown that where a uniform natural gamma background is present in the strata bordering the seam, the thickness of the boundary coal left in place after mining can be determined by measuring the attenuation of that radiation (Nelson and Bessinger, 1989). Measurements made by the authors in underground mines in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, and Kentucky, and by others in Wyoming and New Mexico, have shown the presence of such a gamma background (Nelson, 1989). Natural gamma coal thickness sensors of several configurations have been tested in mines owned and operated by the Consolidation Coal Company in Pennsylvania and west Virginia (Nelson and Bessinger, 1988).

The mining industry continues to underpin the regional economy. Australia, benefiting from a weak currency, receives 27% of the total goods export value from non-energy mining lead by aluminium, iron ore, gold and nickel. Consolidation has eliminated CRA, Comalco, North, Savage, Acacia, Ashton, Great Central, Aberfoyle, Placer Pacific, Plutonic, Normandy and RGC leaving Rio Tinto, BHP-Billiton, WMC, MIM and, increasingly, the South African companies Anglo, Gold Fields and Harmony as dominant players. Exploration stagnates with expenditure dropping 40% in Australia and 80% in PNG from peak levels. Major new regional developments include Rio’s West Angles iron ore project, Newcrest’s Ridgeway gold-copper mine and Inco’s Goro nickel-cobalt project in New Caledonia.

In the 1980&apos;s the Canadian surface mining industry was confronted by declining competitiveness in the face of low cost foreign producers and alternative materials. Low metal prices undermined profits for many mining companies. Restructuring, rationalization, capacity reduction, technology transfer, as well as favourable currency rates and higher commodity prices, helped revitalize the industry by the close of the decade. Now in the 1990&apos;s, however, the need to improve competitiveness for profitability has re-emerged in greater intensity. In the current climate it is considered that there are three strategies available to industry to ensure profitability: continued rationalization and restructuring; optimization of operating practice; and technology development and transfer.

Four companies mined ball clay in four States during2004. They were H.C. Spinks Clay (owned by Franklin Minerals) Kentucky-Tennessee Clay (owned by Imerys),Old Hickory Clay and Unimin. Production was estimated to be 1.46 Mt (1.61 million st) valued at about $56.9 million, based on a preliminary survey of the ball clay industry. In 2003, production was 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) valued at $56.2 million. Tennessee was the leading producer state with 61 percent of production. It was followed by Texas, Kentucky and Mississippi.

TBMand roadheader are two dominating excavation machines in underground tunnelling projects. The performance of these two tunnelling machines has been reviewed and analysed individually by many researchers from multiple points of view. However, there are almost no studies that have made an extensive comparison between these two machines, mostly from financial points of view. The current study is intended to characterize both financial and technical status of these two mechanical tunnelling machines in one of the biggest coal mines in Iran. The main objective of this study is to define the best method and equipment that meets a predefined economic goal, which is mainly to maximize the net present value. To this end, a technical and financial model based on the geomechanical and financial parameters involved in the project has been prepared and the financial part of the project has been carried out by applying COMFAR III financial analysis software. Subsequently, a sensitivity analysis of the model was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of involved parameters on the project. According to the results, a roadheader has better economic justification than a TBM, while the TBM has a better advance rate than the roadheader.

The total value of coal, FOB mine, consumed in the United States was $21 billion in 1985. Roughly $6 billion was spent to transport coal from the mine to the consumer by rail. This indicates the impact railroad transportation has on the competitiveness of U.S. coal as an energy resource. Actually, this is just the tip of the iceberg. When you consider the largest U.S. reserve of coal, the Powder River Basin, which is possibly the lowest cost coal in the U.S., or maybe even the world, the transportation cost is the overriding factor in developing competitive pricing. Rail transportation costs from Powder River can be multiples of 2, 3, or even 4 times the cost of coal FOB mine. About sixty percent of all U.S. coal is shipped by rail. In the case of Powder River Basin coal and many other reserves there are no current alternatives to rail. Are there feasible alternatives to rail transport?

Effective gas management in coal mines, as well as proper ventilation design, is very important for maintaining the safety of underground coal miners. Advances in numerical modeling techniques have enabled evaluations of the coal mining environment using advanced grid designs and computed gas distributions through detailed mathematical models. These models help engineers to see the unseen areas of the mine through visualization of the data and ultimately help improve worker safety. This paper summarizes the modeling efforts conducted by NIOSH in the U.S. and CSIRO in Australia to address various gas management issues encountered in longwall mines. The modeling studies involved two of the most widely used grid-based techniques, namely computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and numerical reservoir modeling. This paper discusses the application of these techniques for gob inertization and gas control for spontaneous combustion, pre-mining degasification of coalbeds, gob gas venthole design and performance evaluation in longwalls, and gas management during development mining.

Mineral liberation data are routinely obtained for a wide variety of applications, including ore characterization and characterization of various metallurgical test products obtained in bench-scale laboratory testwork. Newmont Mining Corporation owns several properties in the Carlin Trend containing refractory gold ores. These ores are generally difficult to treat and have to undergo several processing stages for gold recovery. At Carlin?s Mill 5 operation, flotation is used to pre-concentrate some of these difficult ores to produce a sulfide concentrate to feed the roaster. It is of interest from a flotation perspective to be able to study the floatability of pyrite, arsenopyrite and arsenian pyrite, since these minerals all have different quantities of gold associated with them, and have to be recovered to ensure a successful separation has been achieved. In this paper, a detailed MLA study on several Carlin ores was undertaken on samples from flotation tests, using air or nitrogen as flotation gas, specifically to study the differences in floatability characteristics, which ultimately impacts overall gold recovery. INTRODUCTION It was not very many years ago that tunneling machine manufacturers spent considerable time trying to convince contractors and mine operators of the advantages of mechanical tunnel boring over conventional drill and blast methods. Today there are few doubters left. There is universal agreement that, not only are tunneling machines here to stay, but the ratio of bored rock tunnels to blasted rock tunnels is increasing at an accelerated pace, and within the next twenty years I predict almost all tunnels will be bored by machine. I believe we are today at a very important mile-post in the development of tunnel boring systems. Felix Gaye stated in his recent article (1) "It is important to disseminate between the efficiency of cutting tools and the overall efficiency of the boring operation". Mechanized tunnel boring in the past placed almost total emphasis on the rock cutting and boring ability of the tunneling machine. With advancements in technology and better solutions to the problems of rock fracture, steering control, and structural design, the emphasis today can be placed on the total-system concept. Tunneling machine design, as one of the key elements in the overall system, presents many problems that are not totally solved today. These design problems are, in the most part, not related with rock fracture, but rather with criteria associated with the over-all operation.
