Today, I would like to talk about ways to maximize the efficiency of surface coal operations. I doubt I will present any startling new ideas, but my comments may, hopefully, stimulate some conversation today and later back at your own operations. Strip mining is a very old technique used by ancient societies. Only with the coming of the machine age in the early twentieth century did we attempt to increase the magnitude of our operations. The industry, as we know it today, really only got started in the early 1900s with the advent of steam shovels. In the first portion of this presentation, I will attempt to show that we have, in many cases, not changed the basics of strip mining, only the scale. In doing so, quite often we have complicated the operations to the point of being unmanageable and unprofitable.

Mine and tunnel contractors face a complex environment-one in which economic risks are high, operating costs grow ever higher, ore grades are lower or recovery more difficult, and civil construction projects are intensely competitive on a world-wide scale. Within the context of this environment, the risks and rewards of proper machine selection for rock excavation have become proportionately large. Speed, depth and scope of analysis, and extensive supporting information are indispensable in the selection process. Equipment designs and their applications are also myriad and diverse. Several equipment alternatives and excavation techniques may have to be evaluated at once to choose the most cost-efficient approach. The following examples are typical of the current demand for more detailed equipment analysis: • An aggregate supplier starts a new quarry. He knows his targeted tonnage, blasting restrictions, and previous operating costs from other quarries. But he must improve on his old costs. What drill pattern, hole size, and bench height will give lowest cost per ton? How many crawler drills and what type will produce this tonnage most efficiently? • A mine is using a fleet of twin pneumatic ring drills for long hole drilling to initiate their cave. The mine is facing both air shortages and increasing operating costs with decreased efficiency in the ring drill fleet. If they invest in new hydraulic long hole drills, what impact will each drill unit have on production? Each twin drill unit? What configuration gives best operator efficiency and subsequent reduction in manpower? Which configuration gives the best return on investment? • A tunnel contractor is bidding a long straight water tunnel by conventional drill and blast methods. What is the optimum number of drill booms for the tunnel cross section and excavation schedule? How many rounds per day can he achieve? What are his total project drill, blast, and muck costs? In the past, such questions could be answered, but only approximately at best. One good prediction could involve many hours of laborious calculations that had to be repeated each time a new parameter was introduced or an existing parameter changed. In 1980, increasingly complex analysis, coupled with increasing need and quick response times demanded by industry, led Atlas Copco's project department to turn to the computer. New computer programs based on theoretical considerations and three decades of worksite performance data were developed for evaluating mine and tunnel contractors' equipment needs, productivity, and partial or total operating cost calculations for most conventional drill and blast excavation techniques-including shot rock loading and transportation. This Computerized Analysis of Rock Excavation-or CARE-program has since been available to the mining and construction industry. From each program specific results can be pre- dicted, including: • Productivity Calculations-Rock drill penetration rate for a given drill, hole size, and rock type, optimized for the best drill steel life; net machine productivity (drill-out time or drill meters-footage-per shift); total drill round time, including charging, blasting, loading, and haulage; suggested drill pattern, computer printed, including hole size for a given rock drill, rock type, and associated blasting restrictions for either drift rounds or benching applications; long-hole drill meters (ft) per drill shift; breasting down (upper drilling) drill meters (ft) per drill shift; and comparison between continuous loading machine capacity and LHD capacity. • Operating Cost Calculations-Operating costs expressed as cost per drill meter (ft), cost per cubic meter (cubic yard) of excavated rock, and cost per meter (ft) of tunnel advance. These costs may be calculated using as many cost centers as the mine, quarry, or tunneling contractor wishes. Specific operating costs may cover drill rig operating costs only, less capitalization; drill rig operating costs, including amortized equipment investment; drilling and blasting costs; drill, blast, load, and haulage operating costs; long-hole drilling operating costs per drill meter (ft) or per blasted cubic meter (cubic yard) of rock; and loading and transport operating costs. In all the above cases, any number of cost and capacity calculations may be run by simply changing important cost center variables to judge their net effect. Accuracy as a Function of Input Data and the Statistical Data Base Accuracy of a projection clearly depends heavily on the data base from which the projection is drawn.

The Norwegian contracting firm A/S Høyer-Ellefsen has for the last 2.5 years carried out substantial pregrouting in a 7600m long tunnel just outside the city of Oslo. This has been done to avoid groundwater lowering and consequent damage to surface structures. A WIRTH TBM is used in combination with a 2 boom Atlas Copco hydraulic jumbo for the drilling of groutholes in front of the machine. The detailed procedure for the drilling and grouting will be discussed, and the results obtained will be presented.

For the past four years the U.S. Bureau of Mines has investigated the early detection of insulation failure in squirrel cage induction motors. Data modeling techniques based on values calculated from a motor's voltage and current phasors were used to produce a pair of polynomial equations that calculate a motor's insulation leakage current and power. This paper describes a prototype system using these models that monitors six motors on a continuous miner for insulation leakage in order to anticipate insulation failure. The system consists of a motor-data system for each motor on the machine, a control computer located some ' distance from the miner, and a serial bus to interconnect these items. Each motor-data system consists of an analog interface to the motor's voltages and currents, a single-board computer that reads digitized data and calculates voltage and current phasors, and a bus node that interfaces the single-board computer with the serial bus. The control computer can request and receive phasor data from any motor-data system on the bus. Using models developed at the Bureau, the control computer calculates and displays two deterioration values for each motor, one for leakage current and the other for leakage power. These values are then stored into a database from which the user can display them over time.

The development of precious metal recovery processes using chloride systems has mostly evolved from the development of chloride based treatments for base metal concentrates or ores. The recovery of silver from chloride solutions within a process designed for the treatment of base metals usually is part of a solution purification stage. This paper discusses the development of the silver recovery stage used in the GCM HydroCopper process.

This paper deals with the responsibilities of an operating geologists and the relationship of operations to exploration. It should be of interest to those soon to enter the profession, those new to pining geology and as a review to more experienced geologists. Subjects discussed include detailed geologic mapping, sampling, core logging, assaying, selection of proper map scale, posting geological and assay data, section preparation, identification of ore controls, delineation of development drill targets and geologic hazards, models and the very important topic of salesmanship. Methods and ideas, proven valid in vein, pyrometasomatic replacement and porphyry copper deposits are presented. Hopefully, these will smooth the path for new members of our profession.

For our company, S&B Industrial Minerals S.A., restoration of areas which were mined and the effort for bringing up again a balance of nature is an important priority over the last 3 decades. The successful qualitative results of restoration works have delivered to nature over 1.700.000 m2 of surface after mining activity. Our fundamental method in order to achieve the best results for restoration of mined areas is the use of local plants (bush or tree type). Grass and herbs are installed by using the method of hydroseeding. Small trees and bushes are produced and they grow up at our fully owned Milos nursery and they are installed during winter when weather conditions are suitable. During the initial stages of restoration activities a great amount of surfaces, adequately shaped, are delivered by the mining department covered with top soil. These surfaces are suitable not only for the local nature community but also for a combination between natural and agricultural environment. The above fact was a great chance to create small horizontal agricultural cultivations as pilots inside the restored areas. At the beginning the agricultural items that could potentially be installed in these pilot areas were studied and examined analytically. The following agricultural items were finally qualified to be furthermore researched: 1) Vineyard (Vitis vinifera ) 2) Prickly pear (Opuntia ficus indica) 3) Jojoba (Simmonsia chinensis) 4) Olive tree (Olea europea)

Title IV of the 1977 Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) provides for an abandoned mine reclamation fund. This fund, taken from fees collected from operating coal mines, provides capital for the reclamation process. The Act directs the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to collect the fees based on coal production. Monies from the abandoned mine lands (AML) fund are distributed through two programs. The first provides OSM with capital to use in emergency situations resulting from abandoned mine sites and reclaiming high priority sites in states without established AML programs. The second distributes the money through a state's AML program in the form of grants. To provide for a flexible and customized selection procedure for AML projects, a management information system (MIS) that combines scientific selection procedures is being developed. This system employs objective and subjective methods developed in systems research in recent years. The MIS component is an essential part of any selection process involving large numbers of potential projects. It must contain all the necessary project parameters that can be applied to the selection of projects whether or not they are to be used in the immediate selection criteria. In addition, variable selection criteria will allow ‘what if’ types of inquiries for comparison of differing selections and benefits.

The basic transportation planning process consists of: 1. Inventories and analyses of existing conditions. 2. Estimates of future growth. 3. Determination of future travel demand. 4. Testing alternative systems to satisfy future travel demand. The many modeling techniques used in the transportation planning process are well known, commonly accepted, and thoroughly described in readily available literature. This paper will concentrate on the fourth step of the planning process, specifically the development of alternative systems for testing, and will discuss some of the factors which should be considered during the development of alternative systems. There are many factors which require consideration and which have a bearing on the configuration of alternative test systems. These comments will be limited to the influence of geographic, demographic, geologic, and economic factors. Although addressed separately, the four are to a great extent related and have a significant effect on each other. The objective of examining these factors during the early phases of system planning is to assure that more detailed corridor studies will not be stymied by considerations which could have been anticipated and accommodated at an earlier time. The Doe Run Co. emerged from the depressed lead market of the mid-1980s as North America's leading lead producer. Doe Run was lean and mean but quickly recognized that technology had advanced while the company was held to the belt tightening slump. With the 1990s approaching, Doe Run moved quickly to update its technology and control equipment to ensure its position as an industry leader. Doe Run was formed in 1986 when Fluor Corp. and Homestake Mining Co. combined their lead-zinc-copper assets in Missouri to form a joint venture. Doe Run is now owned by Fluor Corp. A rich history of mining, milling and smelting started in Missouri in 1862 when the St. Joseph Lead Co. was founded. Subsequent acquisitions led to the formation of St. Joe Minerals, which was later purchased by Fluor Corp. Six mines, four concentrators and two smelters are presently being operated, and a secondary lead smelter was recently commissioned. The Viburnum, Buick and Fletcher operations are lead, zinc and copper flotation concentrators, while the Brushy Creek plant is set up to process high copper-low lead ores. This article looks primarily at the process control installation at the Fletcher concentrator.

The results of an experimental and theoretical research study into the spatial and temporal behavior of dust in mine airways is summarized in the paper. Experiments were performed in mine airways under both controlled and normal operating conditions. The controlled experiments included the documentation of the concentration and deposition patterns for two types of dust under three different velocities. Real-time dust concentration data were obtained using Real-time Aerosol Monitors (RAM-I) to determine the dispersion coefficient in a mine airway. On the theoretical front, a convection-diffusion model of the dust flow phenomenon in mine airways was developed considering dominant mechanisms affecting dust transport and deposition in mine airways. Mechanisms modeled include turbulent and gravitational deposition, coagulation, and dispersion.

In recent years a great number of papers have been presented at symposiums and have appeared in the literature relative to geologic prediction for rapid excavation and tunneling. Many of these papers describe research projects now underway to investigate tunnel site selection by remote sensing techniques, seismic holography, electro¬magnetic pulse sounding, optical scanning for structural features, and many other exotic geophysical techniques. While it is possible that this research will produce techniques that may prove to be very useful, it appears for the present at least, and perhaps for another decade, that there still will be no substitute for conventional exploration methods such as coring boring, geologic mapping, studies of existing wells, and proven geophysical techniques. Nevertheless, there is still room for tremendous improvement in the conventional techniques for geologic prediction in tunneling. These include: more rapid and accurately aligned coring borings drilled parallel to the tunnel alignment; improved geophysical surveys both prior and during construction; improved methods for predicting ground¬water inflows and water pressures, both of which can greatly influence the cost of driving tunnels. Geophysical techniques can also be ap¬plied to locate deeply incised glacial troughs or ancient buried stream channels that might cross the tunnel alignment. In the meantime, while some researchers continue their efforts to¬ward a breakthrough in new techniques for geologic prediction, it is recommended that other researchers direct their efforts toward sol¬ving specific problems such as accurately predicting ground-water conditions, determining locations of high geostatic stresses, and locations of major fault and shear zones.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has conducted tests to determine the effectiveness of two methods for reducing diesel particulate emissions in underground coal mines. Both methods involved collection of the particulate material before being released into the environment. One method utilized a disposable pleated paper filter attached to the tail pipe; the other utilized a reusable wire mesh screen attached to the tail pipe. This paper describes the instrumentation and testing used to evaluate both control methods. Results of respirable dust and diesel particulate measurements made underground are presented and analyzed.

Precious metals exploration is increasingly involved with concealed, deeper-seated gold-silver deposits which exhibit considerably more challenges to the geologist than near-surface, oxidized ores. "Design of effective mine water treatment plants depends on the ability to reliably predict treatment outcomes, but systems with multiple chemical and physical treatment processes and recycle loops can be difficult to model. GoldPHREEQC is a modeling framework that integrates mass and flow routing capabilities of GoldSim software and water quality calculations provided by PHREEQC, and is well-suited to modeling parameters of interest in the mining industry, especially metals and sulfate. Physical processes such as membrane separation and greensand filtration are modeled by defining mass rejections for each parameter and flow routing based on vendor projections and bench- or pilot-scale equipment testing. GoldPHREEQC models chemical precipitation processes such as HDS metals removal and gypsum precipitation by (1) performing surface-aging and solubility calculations in PHREEQC and (2) using the GoldSim framework to direct supernatant and precipitate to subsequent process steps. Users can apply this modeling framework to predict effluent water quality, chemical requirements, sludge production, and required equipment capacity to support design, troubleshooting, and cost estimating. Skam deposits considered as porphyry copper deposits have been classified into three basic prospecting models: (I) the skam deposit associated with a mineralized intrusive (Pima-Mission), (2) the deposit associated with a barren igneous stock (Ertsberg), and (3) mineralized rock that seems to have no clear association with apluton (Phoenix). Pima-Mission, Christmas, and many other copper-bearing skarns developed in carbonate sequences near mineralized intrusives form an important part of the deposit. Historically, copper derived from the mineralized intrusion accounts for less than half of the metal produced by most porphyry mines, as most mineralization occurs in the intruded rocks. Skam mineralization is an important part of wall-rock metal deposition, because carbonate sequences are preferentially replaced by sulfide and skarn minerals. Exploration for skam mineralization is an important phase of porphyry copper exploration. Impure carbonate beds can become better host rocks for skam deposits than pure carbonates, and these in particular should be included in porphyry-exploration programs if the impure strata are cut by the stock. Skam deposits can also form near stocks that are barren of sulfide. In this model, the two best ore guides are strata favorable for mineralization (usually impure carbonate beds) and the intrusive contact. Faults can also act as important ore controls. Some skarn deposits form that have no clear genetic connection with a stock, although intrusive rocks are known in the district. In such cases, the best ore guides are strata and district-wide faulting. Dikes and sills are also common and mineralization can locally prefer their contacts even though the igneous rocks are barren. Skam minerals are influenced by the chemical composition of the carbonate. Forsterite, brucite, tremolite, and talc are common in skams developed in dolomitic beds. Skams derived from calcic beds often contain wollastonite, calcite, stilbite, or idocrase. Diopside, however, is a common accompaniment of copper sulfide in skam regardless of the original composition of the carbonates. Tremolite and possibly other amphiboles and chlorite can occur significantly in the zinc-lead portion of skams. Gamets occur in magnetite, copper, and zinc-lead zones of skams, but are not as diagnostic as diopside for the copper zone or tremolite for the zinc-lead zone. A general desciption of skam-deposit mineralogy can be used to construct prospecting models of porphyry copper skams. An abstract of such a description follows.

The stability of underground openings and mining systems is closely related to the in situ stress field. This paper presents a short discussion of the three-component borehole deformation gage and overcoring technique which the Bureau of Mines uses to measure in situ stresses, and a summary of stress data that the Bureau has gathered in the process of evaluating ground control problems. Specific ground control problems and stress distributions are discussed as examples.

The accurate estimation of mining-block grades continues to be a challenging task for ore reserve practitioners. The estimation method used and the variability of the mineralization in the deposit are two factors that affect the accuracy of the estimates. The objectives of this study are to determine how different estimation methods perform on a given deposit and to determine the impact that the nature of the mineralization has on the results. A comparison of several estimation methods for prediction accuracy is performed based on conditional simulation results.

Not everyone understands the concept of mineral royalty. Mineral royalty is a fee paid to a landowner by someone who extracts a mineral commodity from the owners property. The royalty contract between the lessor and lessee contains clauses and conditions that are significant to both parties, e.g., annual m1n1mum, escalation factor, duration of the lease, reclamation and assignability. Comparison of royalty rates requires knowledge of many conditions that influence the value of a given deposit. People in several different professions benefit from shared royalty information.

Conveyor belt haulage has become the preferred mainline transport method in under-ground coal mining, especially for multi-unit mines. Optimum designs for belts (width and speed) and surge bins (placement, capacity, and discharge rate) are necessary for minimizing haulage cost. Two computer simulation models, CMaCS and BELTSIM, available for optimizing these designs are compared. These comparison include: modeling, input data requirements, statistical flexibility, accuracy of simulated loading, and execution time.
