Truck/shovel systems are a major form of materials handling in open-pit mines in spite of the high associated capital and operating costs. Mine management is usually faced with a decision to purchase new equipment in order to support the steadily increasing on production. These decisions involve a high degree of uncertainty with respect to future demands and technical developments. This paper describes a computer simulation model for evaluating the optimum equipment fleet in an open-pit mining operation. The system is based on a stochastic simulation program which accounts for the various mining and economic parameters. It calculates the type of equipment and the optimal number of trucks needed to meet the production targets. Two types of selection criteria: maximum rate of production or minimum cost can be applied.

For the past few years Caro's acid has been used for the treatment of cyanide containing slurry effluents, providing a feasible alter­ naive to other slurry treatment processes including !NCO SO2 / Arr and ferrous sulfate. Presently, mines using Caro's acid gen­erate their own Caro's acid onsite making a relatively low quali­ty product. It was at this point where we, at Degussa Corporation, decided to focus our efforts on engineering a Caro's acid genera­tor capable of cost effectively producing a high quality Caro's acid solution, thus reducing operating costs significantly. Caro's acid or peroxymonosulfuric acid is not a new chem­ical nor is it new to Degussa. The product was named after Heinrich Caro (1834-1910), a German chemist who first described its synthesis and its oxidizing properties in 1898. Degussa has been producing the potassium salt of Caro's acid as the triple salt, 2KHSO5 - 2KHSO4 - K2SO4, called Caroat®, for over 30 years. Caroat® is used for household and denture cleansers, as a bleaching agent in dish washing detergents, in printed circuit board etching and for cyanide destruction in the plating industry. From our experience in producing Caroat® Degussa developed its new Caro's acid based DegOX™ technology for the treat­ment of cyanide containing effluents from gold and silver mines.

Chemical problems associated with surface mining, such as acid generating materials, are important and well documented. However, reclamation research has shown that poor soil physical condition is the most limiting factor to successful row crop production on reclaimed mined land. Critical to success are selection of the best available soil materials used in soil construction and a material handling method that minimizes soil compaction. Excellent corn and soybean yields have been achieved on low strength soils both in high weather stress years as well as low stress years. Total crop failures have occurred on high strength soils in years of weather stress. Some deep tillage practices have been successful in improving compacted soils, but it is preferable to avoid compaction when the soil materials are handled. Soil strength measurements with a cone penetrometer have proven to be a useful tool in evaluating rooting media and reclamation practices. Research has shown that surface mining can be a short term land use that may be followed by productive farmland, if reclamation is done correctly.

The principal factor that must be determined for the effective design of a coal mine roof bolt support system is the maximum stable tension that can be developed with a given bolt assembly in a particular roof rock. There are four basic types of roof bolt anchorage techniques available: (I) the splitwedge; (2) mechanical expansion units; (3) resin point anchors or grouted expansion units; and (4) the cone shell which is placed in a reamed hole. A study of this problem has been made which includes theoretical analyses, laboratory experiments and field tests. A static free-body analysis of each of the anchorage techniques has provided formulas for predicting the anchorage capacity for a particular rock from the results of standard pull tests. The formulas also provide an insight into the anchorage mechanism of technique and allow for a comparative evaluation of the methods for design purposes. The theoretical analyses also indicate clearly the pertinent variables affecting the anchorage mechanism of each method.

Miners working in underground mines where diesel equipment is used are exposed to exhaust pollutants. These include carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO,), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), hundreds of different hydrocarbons (HC) and particulate matter. Evidence from animal inhalation studies and limited epidemiological investigations have led the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to recommend that ‘... whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a potential occupational carcinogen ...’ NIOSH further stated that ‘... the excess cancer risk for workers exposed to diesel exhaust has not yet been quantified, but the probability of developing cancer should be decreased by minimizing exposure…’ The International Agency for Research on Cancer(IARC) reached a similar conclusion, saying that ‘... diesel engine exhaust is probably carcinogenic to humans.’ Before these declarations, there was insufficient evidence concerning the carcinogenicity of diesel exhaust. It was well known, though, that diesel exhaust caused less severe problems, such as headache, eye irritation and unpleasant odors. In 1988, a milestone was reached in the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulatory process. An advisory committee recommended a three-tier approach to regulating diesels used underground-approval of diesel equipment, safety and health. Diesel particulate matter may be specifically regulated. In addition, ambient air quality standards are being proposed that will establish a new standard for CO2 and lower the permissible exposure limits for the NO2, CO, SO2 and formaldehyde emissions that originate from diesels and other sources. Additional safety and emission restrictions are also proposed for diesel engines in coal mines. The goal of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) diesel engine research program is to minimize the health and safety problems associated with underground diesel equipment use. Part of this program is focused on reducing exhaust emissions from diesel-powered equipment used in underground mines.

As part of the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), a large-scale column test utilizing bacteria and a sulfide ore was conducted at McClelland Laboratories, Inc., in Sparks, Nevada. The MWTP is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and is jointly administered through an interagency agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The project was intended to illustrate the viability and feasibility of biodegradation technologies to reduce the cyanide to the regulatory level of 0.2 parts per million (ppm) within an acceptable time frame and with low operational costs.

This section describes two exploration models currently used in the search for porphyry exploration deposits: the hood and the vertical cylinder. Each has alternate names within industry and in the literature. The hood is also known as the Climax or Henderson and the vertical cylinder has also been called the Mt. Pleasant model. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) refers to the vertical cylinder as the zoned model in reference to the horizontal sulfide and silicate zonation evident in and peripheral to the vertical cylinder of molybdenite mineralization. The distinct ore body geometry in each model type necessitates differing drilling and exploration strategies. Drilling for a hood shape is clearly different from drilling for a vertical cylinder type target. The paper by Wallace et al. (1968, abstract herewith) on multiple intrusion and mineralization at Climax, CO, well describes the hood model. That description is supplemented by the paper by Wallace et al. (1978, abstract with Chap. 37) on the geology of the Urad and Henderson deposits. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) describes the vertical cylinder model.

The potash review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. Potash is a general term that includes several water soluble potassium salts: potassium chloride (muriate of potash), potassium sulfate (sulfate of potash), potassium magnesium sulfate (sulfate of potash-magnesia), potassium nitrate (niter) and sometimes potassium carbonate. Potassium carbonate was the original potash when it was leached from wood ashes and dried in large, cast iron pots to black-to-gray crystals (ash) to form "pot ash." "Pearlash" was potash roasted to white crystals. In modern terminology, the great preponderance of "potash" is the mined forms. It is estimated that 95% of the potash mined around the world is used as fertilizer. In 1840, Justus von Liebig demonstrated to the scientific community the importance of potassium to the growth of plants. But there was no low-priced source of potash available at that time. Previous efforts to remove and concentrate heavy-metal ions from wastewater streams via metalloprotein affinity metal chromatography (MAMC) were limited to the metal transport protein transferrin. Extension of the technique to the enzymes carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase A, which possess different metal affinity properties, is described. Preliminary results indicate that the technique is capable of selectively removing and separating late first-row transition metal ions from aqueous solution. The results suggest that by properly choosing the matrix, i.e., protein or enzyme, MAMC may he applicable to problems involving a wide range of heavy-metal-hearing aqueous solutions.

The problem of how to handle heterogeneous populations in an ore reserve global estimation arises in many geostatistical studies. In some cases it is possible to split data into different significant types of ore in such way that non-overlapping subpopulations are obtained, and a separate study is possible. In other cases the subpopulations are intermingled and a set of nested structures may model the spatial variability of the ore. Finally, one of the populations, consisting of a small proportion of high grade values of economical meaning, may disturb the structural analysis. In this paper, some methods are proposed to cope with these kind of problems and typical case studies are presented.

Introduction The recovery of precious metals from ore can generally be accomplished using either gravity concentration, flotation, and/or hydrometallurgical (leaching) techniques. The objective of this paper is to show why gravity concentration can be an important part of recovery systems which employ leaching as the primary unit operation. The state of Illinois is committed to direct support of the Illinois coal industry. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs’(DCCA) Office of Coal Development (OCD) provides incentive programs for coal and energy development. Illinois coal programs include tax and financing incentives for new coal-fired generation, infrastructure grants to expand coal mining and transportation systems, research and development grants to initiate and advance clean-coal technologies and demonstration grants to bring advanced coal utilization technologies to commercial-scale readiness. As a result of these efforts, the Illinois coal industry is reinventing itself and is now more productive and competitive than ever before.

Outokumpu has developed the HG or High Grade flotation cell over the past decade. This machine gives upgrading and selectivity performance superior to conventional mechanical cells while maintaining their simplicity, ease of operation and recovery characteristics. The HG design is available in a tank cell configuration which provides a number of benefits in plant design and operation. This paper will describe the HG Tank Cell and the "Virtual Column" concept. Results are given from the operation of the HG Tank Cells at Lac Minerals - Est Malartic in Quebec, Canada. Further discussion of applications for gold recovery is also provided.

In a large surface mine design, different kinds of mining equipment can be selected. Even though the major purpose of capital investment is to get more profit from mining activities, there are some other complicated factors which influence the selection of mining equipment must be considered as well. A fuzzy evaluation model with fuzzy set theory is proposed in the paper to make a good selection of mining equipment in which different kinds of factors including quantitative and nonquantitative ones can be taken into account at the same time. With the model, mining equipment selection of a large surface mine can take into consideration not only economic factors but also some other factors which play important role in mining system.

"The Vermilion range extends from the vicinity of Tower to and beyond the ""international boundary, crossing into Canada at the eastern end of Hunter's Island. The strike is about east and west and the dip approximately vertical, with a westerly pitch. The underground workings at this mine are some 4,500 feet in extent east and west, and over 1,500 feet in depth. The structure here is probably the most complex in the Lake Superior iron districts. Above the iron bearing formation, geologically, comes the basal conglomerate of the Lower Huronian, carrying large boulders and Masses of the iron bearing rocks."

Recently in Germany, novel artificial humus in combination with water-storing hydrogels has successfully been tested as soil improving material in pot experiments. The novel artificial humus (NOVIHUM®) is derived from lignite through oxidative ammonolysis. The product contains c. 5.5% nitrogen. Using NOVIHUM® as fertiliser, variable amounts of the contained nitrogen are gradually available to the plant, depending on the hydrolysis rates of the different N-compounds. NOVIHUM® is a unique combination of long-term fertiliser and stable humus. The tested hydrogel is a polyacrylate/poly-amide copolymer, which is able to improve the water holding capacity of the soil and to retard significantly desiccation. In May 2000, in Germany (Aue region), an experimental site was set up under extremely difficult growing conditions for trees (Quercus petraea) on a uranium spoil pile of the mining company WISMUT Ltd. The oak plots treated with NOVIHUM® and hydrogel showed increased total increment-values, which mainly are the result of the second growth phase. Obviously, these plants profit from the favourable physical parameters of the substrate and the use of the novel artificial humus as nitrogen source. The oak trees can better use the plant-available NH4-nitrogen released from the artificial humus during the planting year. In Greece, an experiment was set up in December 2000 aiming to the afforestation (Pinus nigra, Abies cephalonica) of a bauxite spoil pile of SILVER & BARYTE ORES MINING Co. S.A., on the Parnassus Mountain. The scope was to demonstrate, that the above soil improving materials are also appropriate for the recultivation of sites under extreme climatic and orographic conditions. The first results revealed, that where NOVIHUM® and hydrogel were combined, plant growth was greater than the average. The one-year results of the experiments fulfil our expectations concerning the application of NOVIHUM® in combination with hydrogel for the afforestation of problematic sites, such as the south-exposed steep slopes of the spoil piles of uranium mining. They may represent the most detrimental sites for afforestation in Europe.

Progress, future challenges, and the continual search for more efficient and rapid methods of excavating underground openings and shafts were main themes at the 1983 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) held June 12-16 in Chicago, IL. The event, jointly sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Engineering Institute of Canada, offered a diverse program for both civil and mining engineering disciplines. Although all papers given at the three-day conference were noteworthy contributions, and each is included in the conference proceedings currently available from SME, there were a few sessions that had particular mining-related interest. Research, Acceptance Needed for Water-Jet Technology Water-jet-assisted rock excavation is seen by some as a technology moving from the prototype phase to a fully developed, accepted system within the next decade. For an industry that is traditionally fairly slow in accepting significant changes, this development appears especially noteworthy. However, speakers at the water-jet technology session generally agreed that many large US manufacturers are not viewing water-jet-assisted equipment as viable replacements for all-mechanical systems. This, they fear, may mean some US manufacturers will lose a significant share of certain equipment markets to foreign competitors who are moving aggressively ahead in this area. Despite the advantages of increased cutting rates, reduced power requirements, less dust, prolonged bit life, and reduced sparking in many cutting situations, water-jet technology applied to mining is apparently having some acceptance problems in the US. R. J. Evans, professor of industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, noted that there are several perceptual barriers to water-jet coal cutting; such as uncertainties concerning the fu¬ture demand for coal and the reliability of equipment, apprehensions that jet-assisted equipment will make the mine operator dependent on specific types of hard-to-obtain equipment, and fears about accessibility of the equipment for repairs. Evans also said numerous parameters need defining before taking advantage of water-jet-assisted cutting systems in under-ground coal mining in the US. For the cutting head, information must be obtained on optimum bit geometry and spacing, and maximum and minimum torque requirements. For a complete US water-jet cutting system, Evans added, research is needed to establish optimum jet pressures, jet powers, number of jets per bit, and location of jets relative to the bit. Recent mining regulations have increased the need for detailed engineering and environmental information pertaining to the hydrogeologic environment in mining areas. The cost of obtaining such hydrogeologic information has also increased. After mineralization of potentially economic grade ore and tonnage has been identified, and after completing preliminary mining feasibility studies (suggesting that development is merited), a second exploration phase can incorporate a simple, cost-effective baseline hydrogeologic data reconnaissance program that is limited but useful. Using exploration drill holes only, this program can provide a direct indication of where ground water is encountered. Also, reasonable estimates can be made on the relative production of water from various water-bearing strata, a composite potentiometric surface map can be prepared, and the general chemistry of the ground water can be characterized. This article outlines what typical baseline hydrogeologic data are needed and describes how it can be easily obtained during exploration drilling. Introduction Major engineering and environmental ground water parameters can be identified early in a project by using, drill hole data obtained from a mineral exploration program, designed by the mine geologist and hydrogeologist. Most importantly, data obtained in the exploration drilling program can be used to design a logical, defensible, and cost-effective baseline ground water data reconnaissance and monitor well program, which would be required for mine design and ultimately for mine permit approval. Drilling Where possible, exploration drill holes should be drilled with conventional rotary drilling equipment using air or, if necessary, water as the drilling fluid. Rotary air or water drilling generally allow good delineation of the first major saturated or water-bearing zone. If mud must be used during drilling, distinct hydrogeologic zones can still be defined, although the task may be considerably more difficult. Water Levels Static water levels can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes at specific depths while additional boreholes are drilled. Such measurements should not, however, be conducted until the hole has been developed with air (no water) and has stabilized at each of the depths to be measured. Such water-level information can be particularly useful when more than one aquifer exists. Where mine development is eminent, the hydrogeologist should install 50-100 mm (2-4 in.) diameter PVC casing in select drill holes. The PVC should be slotted, gravel packed, and properly sealed so additional hydrogeologic data can be collected for specific hydrogeologic zones at a later date. Such data could include water level information, permeability estimates based on injection and /or pumping tests, and water quality data. Where casing is not installed in drill holes, or when the drill holes are abandoned, the holes should be properly grouted and back-filled to the ground surface to prevent potential future ground water contamination. Monitoring Air Lift Water Production Estimates of the relative production from various water-bearing strata can be obtained from selected exploration drill holes. If ground water is encountered, its air lift (ground water flow) production can be measured at distinct intervals using a surface water flow measuring device, such as a portable Parshall

The mine characteristic curve represents the relation between the airflow in a system and the pressure drop across the system. In a single fan system, this relation can be easily drawn by assuming different values of the airflow and calculating the corresponding pressure drop according to Atkinson’s law. In a multiple-fan system this cannot be done for each fan simultaneously. However, an alternative mathematical method for plotting subsystem characteristic curves on subsystem quantity coordinates is outlined here that achieves this objective. The Hardy Cross algorithm has been combined with a switching-parameters technique and has been used to trace subsystem characteristic curves. An example using four fans in a complex network is presented here. This example illustrates the nature of the problem and the difficulty of detecting unstable conditions in this type of network.

From the experience of the authors on recent large infrastructure Design-Build projects this paper reviews major lessons for Contractors and Owners in the delivery of large Design-Build infrastructure projects and some major pitfalls and warnings to both Owners and Contractors. The paper is written from both the Design and Construction perspective. A case history is presented that details the approach employed to ensure a quality project consistent from the initial design phase through construction and outlines the strategy used to guide the Design-Build process to an acceptable completion. Suggestions are made for Contractors and Owners for handling the Design and the Construction elements of Design-Build contracts.
