Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

An approach for scheduling the mining of ore and waste blocks in a surface mine is presented. While mathematical programming approaches have been developed to solve this problem optimally, they are difficult to implement and understand. The more simplistic approach presented here achieves practical mining schedules, taking into account both long- and short-term considerations. The key to the approach is use of the concept of ranked positional grade. The program can determine a complete schedule for a specified time period, or it can be used interactively as a guiding tool for the engineer.

Quebrada Blanca (QB) is a copper project located in the semi-arid Andean highlands of northern Chile. The operation is situated 170 km ( 105 miles) southeast of the port of Iquique and 30 km (18 miles) west of the border with Bolivia, at an altitude of about 4300 m (14,000 ft) (Fig. 1). The QB ore body is a secondarily enriched porphyry copper deposit containing reserves of 85 Mt (93 million st) grading 1.3% copper. Underlying the enriched zone is a significant primary ore zone containing several hundred million tons grading about 0.5% copper. In the late 1970s and early 1980s Falconbridge and its affiliates spent $20- $30 million exploring the deposit and conducting feasibility studies. Falconbridge, however, decided not to develop the property. It was returned to its owners, Empresa National de Mineria (ENAMI), a Chilean state mining corporation. In 1988, ENAMI announced its intention to privatize the property through public bidding. Cominco Resources, then 61% owned by Cominco Ltd., examined the property and the extensive data base developed by Falconbridge. In conjunction with its parent company, Cominco Resources submitted a proposal to ENAMI to construct an open- pit mine, with heap leaching and solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX-EW) processing facilities. The plan would use patented heap leaching technology developed by Sociedad MineraPudahuel (SMP), a privately owned Chilean mining company. At that time, a $150-million project that would produce about 45 kt/a (50,000 stpy) of cathode copper was envisaged.

This is a description of the efforts of a research project intended to demonstrate methods of alleviating pollution from coal mine refuse piles and slurry lagoons. These are mainly derelict barren sites. Some are burning and some are vulnerable to wind erosion which causes air pollution. Some occupy valuable land near metropolitan areas. They are an integral part of the landscape of the Appalachian and Midwestern Coal Fields. They are important in the light of growing civic awareness of the great general problem of waste disposal and environmental improvement. In the V-shaped valleys of the Pocahontas Region, they continue to be piled higher and higher. In flatter topography, they tend to form broad, flat ridges. Some contain more metal forms than others and some have a minimum of metal, but weather to a fine talc, which chokes streams with a fine particle suspension. Most are burning or have burned, but burning or weathering, most all are sources of pollution to the atmosphere and to adjacent waterways. This demonstration project is being carried out at an abandoned mine near the town of Du Quoin in southern Illinois. It is jointly sponsored by the Truax-Traer Division of Consolidation Coal Company and by the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration of the Department of the Interior. The site area is a refuse pile and slurry lagoon, each of fifty acres. It is hoped that basic data from this study will be generally applicable to other sites and will provide a basis for rational and efficient engineering design of future reclamation projects. Most refuse piles have extremely long term capabilities to produce highly potent acidogenic oxidation products typifying the more serious aspects of acid mine drainage contamination. Numerous sites remain where the abandoned mine no longer discharges acid waters, but its associated refuse pile continues to generate significant quantities of acid and other oxidation products even after many years.

Radiation protection in uranium mines and nuclear reactors is compared, with the objective of determining if any radiation protection practices which have worked well in one area can be adapted to the other area, especially from reactors to mines since radiation protection is more highly developed in reactors. Several areas are identified where improvements can be made in radiation protection in mines, the most important being improvement in ventilation at the workplace, greater attention to special monitoring during upset conditions, and a need for a substantial increase in radiation protection staff. It is concluded that, although considerable room exists for improvement, the general approach to radiation protection presently being followed seems appropriate for the circumstances encountered in mining.

Resource Technology Associates (RTA) has developed a flocculation-flotation process that increases phosphate recoveries from current operating plants. A major advantage of the process is the ability to float the phosphate from the matrix without a preliminary separation to remove the slimes. A majority of the material that is now discarded in the slime fraction will be recovered in the new process. The process can also be used to recover phosphate material from current slime ponds either as a separate feed or mixed with matrix material. Flotation tails from the process demonstrate improved dewatering characteristics then those seen from conventional float tails.

Differential settlement on reclaimed land presents a particular problem when the land is to be used for row crops. The poorly drained depressions caused by differential settlement restrict crop yield resulting in additional costs to alleviate the problem. Potentially more serious is the threat of failing to meet target yields due to settlement: related reductions. Because the mechanism by which the problem occurs is not well understood, a physical model study was conducted to investigate the importance of several factors. Although the importance of such factors as the relative amounts of rock and unconsolidated overburden in the undisturbed condition and the size distribution of rock fragments were considered, the analysis concentrated on the causes of settlement in the reconstructed soil layer above the rock spoil.

Ion flotation is a process in which ions of interest are complexed with a suitable surfactant molecule. A dilute solution containing these complexes is then aerated, under which circumstance the surface-active complex concentrates at the air-water interface and is transferred to a froth. The present work describes some of the phenomenology of this process and experimental work leading up to the design and use of a pilot scale laboratory facility. Early experiments suggest that selective recovery of gold can be obtained in a manner at least equivalent to conventional CIP processing at low capital cost. Under favourable conditions, upgrade ratios of gold ions of the order of 180: l have been achieved from reclaimed residue dam water with as low an initial gold level as 0.2ppm. Successful development of countercurrent ion flotation for concentrating solids-free gold solutions may offer a lower cost alternative to existing gold ore processing technologies, or in more secondary applications such as concentrating dilute gold solutions or heap leach runoff. The technology may also have more generalised applications to other heavy metal processing.

While the oil shale resources of the US are becoming increasingly known, few people in this country are aware of the extensive worldwide occurrence of this resource. Two recent international conferences* confirmed the growing worldwide interest in oil shales, both as future and current energy sources. The 1981 conference noted the difficulty in characterizing worldwide oil shale resources because of lack of common terminology in reporting both assay value and resource potential. Assay value is variously reported as: •US gallons per short ton; •Imperial gallons per metric ton; •Liters per metric ton; •Liters per cubic meter; •Weight percent oil; and •Volume percent oil. Oil shale resources are variously reported in barrels, short tons of oil shale, metric tons of oil shale, and cubic meters of shale oil. Worldwide petroleum shortages sparked interest in alternate energy resources including oil shales. While petroleum supplies appear to have stabilized, at least for a while, high costs are affecting the balance of payment index of many countries, resulting in a continued search for local energy resources. Kerogen is the organic constituent of oil shale and may be the most abundant form of hydrocarbon on earth, possibly exceeding coal occurrences and far more abundant than naturally-occurring petroleum resources. Oil shale, by one name or another, is widespread and is known to exist in more than 38 countries (Table 1). Oil shale industries have existed in at least 14 countries at one time or another. Many predated the Drake oil discovery in Pennsylvania in 1859, and most were unable to compete with natural oil; these operations either converted to its use or closed. At the present time shale oil is being produced on a commercial scale only in the USSR and in China. Only very rough estimates of grade and quantity are available for most of the worldwide shale occurrences since only a few deposits have been thoroughly explored. The Green River Formation of Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming is an exception. For many years this oil shale deposit has been described as the largest single concentration of hydrocarbon material in the world. With increasing world interest, larger deposits may yet be found. In 1965, the US Geological Survey published an in-place world oil shale estimate. This study, while made some 16 years ago, is still a reasonable order-of-magnitude estimate. Although exploration and evaluation are underway and a few oil shale deposits have been appraised, information on which to evaluate most worldwide oil shale occurrences has improved little since 1965. This paper describes the application of a cyclonic flotation column (CFC) for coal cleaning. A CFC makes use of centrifugal force to create a density gradient in a column to augment the froth flotation process. In a CFC, a series of angular helical inserts is attached to the wall of a conventional column, and coal slurry is mixed with a series of impellers attached to a central shaft. The hydrophobic froth concentrates near the center shaft and moves upward, while the relatively heavy hydrophilic particles concentrate near the wall and are guided downward by the helical inserts. The results of pyritic sulfur removal from an Upper Freeport coal during CFC flotation are discussed.

Ion flotation of gold is a process continuing to be developed to selectively beneficiate dilute aurocyanide liquors using a novel surface­active complexing agent. Aeration of these liquors causes accumulation of the precious metal species in the froth concentrate produced in a flotation column. Successful development of ion flotation for concentrating solids-free liquors would offer a low--cost method for recovering specific metals from heap leach runoff or waste tailings solutions. The cost of constructing and operating a 100 tph gold ion flotation facility has been compared with the relevant carbon adsorption plant costs. Reductions in operating costs of 25% and installed capital of 40% are possible in relevant expenditure areas. For an 'average' processing plant, this equates to annual operating savings of A$ 170 000 and a capital saving of A$ 515 000, with a three-point increase in total (mine and plant) site DCF ROI. High gold inventories are eliminated and the number of processing steps is reduced. The application of gold ion flotation will initially be confined to heap leach operations in the western U.S.A., although use of the process in mine abandonment programmes elsewhere is also an area of future development.

During recent years, S0 2 consumption and distribution patterns have resulted in renewed interests for liquid S0 2 and on site gaseous S02 manufacturing facilities. one relatively new use for S0 2 in the Mining Industry is its use for cyanide detoxification. Each year approximately 5,000 tons of a sulfide concentrate grading 1 ounce gold per ton are produced at this operation. The material is refractory and as shipping costs and custom smelter charges increase, options to process it on site are becoming more attractive. Three methods of treating the ore have been investigated in detail. The first option of ultra fine grinding the concentrate produces a 35% gold recovery with relatively low capital and operating costs. A second option of pressure oxidation is very capital intensive and has high operating costs but recoveries in the order of 95% are achievable. The final option, biological leaching offers both capital and operating costs which are less than pressure oxidation, while still achieving 90% gold recoveries. Bioleaching of gold concentrates has been gaining acceptance but there is a risk factor associated with this or any emerging technology.

About 100 years ago the acid and chlorine oxidation routes for gold extraction were abandoned in favour of cyanide/ oxidation processes. Now a return to acid processing is in progress. One publication in particular led HM C Technology to investigate the reaction of dilute nitric acid and alkaline metal chlorides with refractory gold ores.(l) The one stage system of gold and silver recovery from sulphidic ores is described below. It is rapid and does not use large or expensive plant or special pressure equipment. It eliminates calcining followed by cyanidisation and shows a simple way of recovering the gold directly. Patents have been granted in some countries (2).

Yet, major advances in design methodologies have occurred in other branches of engineering. Is creative design in mining a myth only? Are we deluding ourselves when we talk about innovative mining design of today? What is the reality of the situation? This paper explores the methodology of creative engineering design as a new recognized discipline. It warrants applications in mining since design experts are sometimes unaware of their own decision-making processes.

The requirements placed on belt conveyors grow increasingly complicated No longer is it sufficient for the conveyors to merely move material from "Point A" to "Point B. " Now these systems must be able to produce a specified flow, guaranteeing a plant can operate as scheduled without peaks and valleys in material flow and production rate. In addition, the conveying system must provide effective control, to minimize the problems and costs associated with the escape of fugitive material these problems include unscheduled shutdowns, premature equipment failures, regulatory headaches, poor neighbor relations, and health and safety issues. The key to accomplishing these goals is the loading and discharge of the conveyor belts. Fortunately, new designs for the chutes that accomplish conveyor loading and discharge can move material efficiently, without blockages and while minimizing the amount of dust generated This innovation is the development of engineered flow chutes

Development of computer-based information systems is predicated on the merger of rapidly developing computer technology and growing managerial demands for information. The focus of this section is on managing the development and implementation of information systems for the 1980's. It is the experience of the majority of contributors to this volume that among unresolved problems of major dimensions in a mineral organization are those of managing the computer-based information systems resource itself. There are three major reasons for this: (1) mineral information systems are relatively new to the senior management of a mining company or a mineral organization; (2) problems are compounded by a developing technology, a new type of personnel with a changing experience/education mix; and (3) an organizational structure and location which, in many organizations, are still being examined. The three authors in this section present aspects of managing the information systems function which, based on their experience, are common to the solution of the problem. The premise that the information systems function has been placed appropriately within the entire business plan of the firm has been made by the authors in their discussion of the various aspects of the management process.

The Solution Mining review arrived too late to appear in the May issue. Solution mining, in its broadest definition, includes all forms of leaching where a lixiviant solution is brought into contact with a metalliferous or non-metallic ore and the resulting pregnant solution is processed for recovery of the valuable soluble material. Technologies such as dump leaching, heap leaching, stope washing and in situ lixiviant solution injection and recovery fit into this definition of solution mining. A publication entitled the US Gold Industry (Dobra and Thomas) reflects the major impact that solution mining techniques have had on precious metal recovery. In 1989 (the last year for which statistics are available), the United States passed Australia to become the third largest gold producing country in the world after South Africa and the Soviet Union. It is estimated that when the final figures are in for 1990, the US will probably pass the Soviet Union in gold output. If the state of Nevada is ranked as a separate country, it will rank fourth in the world in gold production for 1990. A good proportion of this increase in gold production over the past few years can be attributed to the application of solution mining technology to low-grade, precious-metal-bearing material. Solution mining techniques have also made inroads in copper production. Many operations located at former underground mine sites employ in situ leaching as an adjunct to conventional dump and heap leaching practices.
