The Bureau of Mines has studied the impact of shuttle car movement on face ventilation. Real-time measurements of air velocity, methane gas, and respirable dust were recorded and compared with a time study of face shuttle car movement. Work was conducted in a blowing face ventilation section where a scrubber-equipped mining machine operated. Air velocities decreased by an average of 35% as the shuttle car entered the face, restricting air flow, and increased by an average of 35% as the shuttle car pulled away from the face, drawing with it additional air. Return air methane levels follow the face air flow volumes, decreasing as air volume increases. The surge of air created as the shuttle car leaves the face helps to dilute methane. Respirable dust levels, however, were found to increase as the air flow increased and decreased the scrubber capture efficiency.

The Crago “Double Float” process is widely used in upgrading phosphate ore. This process is inefficient, as it floats about 30-40% of the sands in the flotation feed twice and requires a deoiling step. This paper summarizes several research projects on improving phosphate flotation. The University of Utah investigated a new flotation chemistry for efficient flotation of phosphate in a single step. The Florida Institute of Phosphate Research developed several single-collector, all-anionic flotation flowsheets using various sizing schemes. In addition, Eriez invented the HydroFloat separator, which demonstrated great potential for processing coarse flotation feed in one step.

The United States produces approximately 40 mil- lion tons of phosphate rock per year. Most of this rock is converted to diammonium phosphate and used as a fertilizer component for the domestic and international agricultural market. Much of this phosphate rock production is concentrated in the southeastern United States, with about half coming from washing and screening operations and half from flotation separation from sand and clay. This paper summarizes current operating practice in the industry and touches on some of the emerging technologies required to solve the problems associated with a diminishing high- grade reserve and the need to implement dolomite/francolite separations on a commercial scale.

The annual rainfall at Minera Yanacocha's gold mining operations in northern Peru averages 1.2 meters. The influx of water into the operations is higher than losses to evaporation and by ore absorption which results in a positive water balance. To minimize water intake and maintain a balance, some special operating procedures are required, and a system involving diversion ditches, storm ponds, heap skirting and detoxification and treatment of excess water is practiced. An operation background is also reviewed at the beginning of the paper.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program that has been developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The resulting network problems are solved analytically. With this program, the size of fans can be determined in order to reduce the total leakage and minimize the flow recirculation. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain Project, Nevada.

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

The liquid-phase mixing within CANMET's Western Research Centre's (WRC) 0.76-m-diem pilot-plant flotation column was characterized using a salt tracer. The process variables studied were frother addition and, gas and liquid flow rates. The response of the column to a tracer pulse was monitored at three axial and two radial locations. The results showed that the 2-tph flotation column was well mixed. Discussed are the implications of this observation to column design and scale-up.

Acid resistance, zeta potential and ESCA (electron spectroscopy. for chemical analysis) experiments were performed on emperador marble and four calcium carbonate samples (onyx calcite, travertine calcite, Iceland spar calcite and aragonite). Six fluorine-containing reagents were used to treat the surfaces of these materials: magnesium hexafluorosilicate, zinc hexafluorosilicate, sodium fluoride, zinc fluoride, strontium fluoride and stannous fluoride. The acid resistance of treated samples proved to be much higher than that of their untreated equivalents. The isoelectric point of treated samples approaches the isoelectric point of fluorite. Also, the fluorine content, as measured by ESCA, of a marble surface treated with magnesium hexafluorosilicate is much higher than that of an untreated sample. The binding energy off of fluorine and calcium the treated marble is consistent with the formation of calcium fluoride.

A method has been developed in the USSR for processing the low-grade high-silica raw material by sintering the aluminacontaining mixes, which is widely used both as a principal process and in combination with the Bayer process. The process parameters were obtained on the basis of a study of interaction and equilibrium states of the individual profiles of a multi-component system Na20-A1203-Fe203-CaO-Si02 at the sintering temperatures. The compositions and melting temperatures of eutectics of the individual profiles are given. It is shown that the most easily meltable mix is one having a red mud as the main component. The variations are given of the sinter physical characteristics and recovery of the useful components with the sintering temperature. Considerations are given on selection of a sinter leaching flowsheet and directions are shown for improving a series method of processing the low-grade raw material.

The paper describes industrial size experiments with a 100 m3 flotation cell validating the Size Specific Flotation concept and the Tank Cell design. It discusses some variables affecting the flotation of coarse particles. The results were good. The flotation recovery of coarse particles increased up to 50%. In finer sizes the flotation improvement was 5-15% The enhanced flotation of especially the coarsest particles increased the total recovery close to 10%-units compared to conventional cells in a porphyry copper flotation. The related power draw was only 50-80% of the power of conventional cells.

In 1990, the United States became only the second country (after China) to produce more than 900 Mt (1 billion st) of coal in a single year. US production of bituminous and subbituminous coal, lignite and anthracite totaled 933.5 Mt (1.029 billion st) in 1990, 5% more than in 1989. The production gains were largely due to the rebuilding of depleted coal stockpiles by electric utilities and a surge in US coal exports. Domestic coal consumption essentially remained at its 1989 level. A slight increase in electric utility coal consumption was partly offset by a decline in metallurgical coal use. The use of coal in other industries and in the residential-commercial sector remained virtually flat.

Stirred ball mill feeds used for ultrafine grinding applications require a fine size separation step to avoid overgrinding. This paper presents the selectivity curves obtained for oil shale and complex sulfide ore using a 460-mesh (30-µm) Derrick vibrating screen. The selectivity curves generated from the experimental data show increasing selectivity with larger size for the oil shale but not for the sulfide ore. These unusual selectivity curves are similar to the mechanical air separator, fishhook selectivity curves described by Luckie and Austin. A two-stage, in series, classification model describing the fishhook selectivity curve has been used in proposing the classification mechanism for fine vibrating screens when a heterogeneous, multicomponent sulfide ore undergoes size separation.

The effects of harmonic resonance between the supply impedance and power factor correction capacitors on systems with large harmonic sources, such as mine winders, are well known. The similar effects of resonance with cable capacitance are not commonly encountered and, hence, are not always considered in the design of medium-voltage networks. This article considers some of the aspects of resonance between the supply impedance and the cable capacitance and presents one successful approach to solving the problem.

Beat exchange in an open air-water system is considered. The system incorporates a vertical cooling tower, and a horizontal multi-stage spray chamber with unlimited number of stages. Mixing of two streams of both water and air is permitted. A spread-sheet implementation estimates temperatures of outgoing water and air for given mass flow of water and air, factor of merit for heat exchangers, barometric pressure, wet- and dry-bulb temperatures, and the temperature of incoming water.

Discussion of concept Breakage of rock by machine is one of the major methods of excavation. With the development of modern engineering techniques, the advantages of using this method have become even greater. Improving efficiency and reducing the cost of rock breakage is the main goal of mechanizing the rock-breaking operation. For a given stratum, the efficiency of a machine excavation depends, to a large extent, on the design and method of application of the tools used. In a planetary cutter head, the subcutter heads move like planets around the main drive shaft. The general structure of the cutter head is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in this illustration, the main drive shaft (1-1) is connected to the tie bar (1) and, thereby, to a gear (5) that meshes with a fixed-gear ring (2). The subcutter head (4) is rigidly connected to the gear (5) by the subcutter-head axis (2-2). When the main drive shaft (1-1) rotates, the subcutter head (4) rotates around the axis (2-2), under the action of the tie bar and with the help of sleeve pipe (3). At the same time, axis (2-2) also rotates around the main shaft (1-1). As shown in Fig 1, [a] is the angle between the main shaft and the subcutter-head axis. This angle determines the shape of the drilling face. If [a] equals zero, the drilling face will be a flat surface (Fig.1 (a) ), and if [a] is greater than zero, the drilling face will be a spherical surface (Fig. I (b)). For a planetary cutter head, the most important design parameter is the transmission ratio (i), which is defined as [i = (0210)1(1)] Where [(a] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter heads around their individual axes, and [o] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft. In Eq. (1), i is positive if the direction of rotation of a subcutter head around its axes is the same as the direction of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft (see Fig. 1(b)). Conversely, i is negative when the two directions are opposite (see Fig. 1(a)). When i is positive, the cutters on the subcutter heads form epicycloid paths on the drilling face, as shown in Fig. 2(a). A high shear treatment step was observed to improve flotation of coal. The effect of high shear treatment (HST) was a strong function of coal rank, however. For the low rank coals the HST produced loose, open-structured agglomerates which decreased the entrapment of ash minerals. For the high rank coals, the high shear treatment promoted detachment of low-floating particles from the agglomerates that ordinarily formed in a flotation cell. The extent of agglomeration and detachment of particles from the agglomerates was a function of the amount of dodecane and coal rank. To obtain desired efficiency of separation ethylene-propylene oxide block co-polymers were used. The results showed that the HST-flotation technique increased the ash rejection considerably for both high and low rank coals, though the mechanisms were different.

INTRODUCTION Following the world stock market debacle in October 1987, it would have been foolhardy to expect that securing equity funding in 1988 would be easy. Indeed, major equity financing's for gold mining companies have until recently been few and far between in the weeks and months following Black Monday. As a result, gold bullion loans have taken on an increasingly important role among producing firms in the industry. During 1988, the role of bullion loans has become increasingly complex and controversial. Some observers herald the emergence of a new breed of bullion loans - such as the 1,000,000 ounce loan to Newmont Mining, and the 400,000+ ounce facilities drawn down by Bond International Gold and Placer Pacific - as both increasing the public's awareness of the technique, and representing the dawn of a new age of gold financing. But are these recent loan facilities significantly different than those issued worldwide during the early to mid 19801s? Similarly, observers have voiced concerns regarding the role that gold loans play in the world's bullion markets, specifically in relation to their impact on prices. Have the new generation of mega-loans depressed current and future prices? Has the current surge of bullion loans irrevocably changed the nature of the gold market? Is there an upper limit on the number and size of gold loans?
