Geologic structures in mine roof rock contribute to many roof falls in Appalachian coal mines. These structures include paleochannels, scours, pinch-outs, slickensides, clay veins, and cravasse splays consisting of thinly interlaminated sandstone and shale. These structures often can be identified during, and sometimes before, development and mine projections can be revised to reduce the adverse effects of discontinuities in roof structure. Large areas of roof consisting of laminated sandstones or incompetent strata generally can be delineated from exploratory drill-hole data and the need for supplementary support can be anticipated. Because an accurate description of roof geology also provides some indication of optimum length and type of roof bolts that should be installed, this Bureau of Mines paper describes the hazardous roof structures most commonly encountered in the Appalachian coal region.

Acquisition of coherent and representative data about the state of processes remains a major problem of process control. This paper proposes an approach that ensures coherence in measurements on an operational industrial process. The basic technique employed relies on balance equilibration of resource mass flow. An interesting particularity of the set up is the ease with which it can be adapted to check productivity or detect sensor failures. In the case of sensor failure, it suffices to examine the evaluations before and after balance equilibration. The algorithm was tested by means of computer simulation using data from an industrial metallurgical flowsheet.

This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle's initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

"Acid mine drainage (AMD) has become a serious environmental problem in the mining industry in the last decade. Many efforts have been made in an attempt to find a better method to manage this problem in a proper manner, both through prevention and mitigation. One of the methods to prevent AMD generation is a dry dump cover system that has been proposed to minimize oxidation of sulphide waste rock in dumping sites. The performance of this system depends on the physical and geochemical stability of a barrier layer to minimize water and oxygen influx. In the mining industry, this barrier layer is formed by using Inert/Non Acid Forming (NAF) waste rocks to cover Potentially Acid Forming (PAF) underneath. However, the availability of NAF waste rocks, due to the geological condition, mining sequence and capability of equipment, is limited in some mines. This paper will discuss the acid generation mechanism, application of a cover system and its problem being faced in an Indonesian coal mine, and describe a preliminary laboratory result of a multi layer cover system in an attempt to overcome this problem."

Los métodos de desmuestre para estudios de viabilidad dependen de las características geológicas del yacimiento que ha de ser evaluado. Se requiere un estudio geoestadístico preliminar, teniendo en cuenta los aspectos de autocorrelación de las variables sometidas a estudio, con objeto de que el plan de diseño de muestras pueda ser optimizado para producir las estimaciones de ley y tonelaje dentro de los límites de errores establecidos. En general, debe de tenderse a una distribución regular de muestras para ello, y longitudes regulares de las mis¬mas (a partir de los testigos o cortes, por ejemplo) son preferidas con objeto de facilitar los análisis estadísticos. Los planes de desmuestre son modificados y mejorados (bien técnica o económicamente) a medida que avanza el programa y es obtenida información adicional. Las muestras a granel para pruebas metalúrgicas pueden ser evaluadas en término de va¬riaciones señaladas por todas estas muestras en un depósito y la variabilidad de la ley dentro de las mismas. Una atención adecuada sobre estas fuentes de variabilidad asegurará una evaluación adecuada de los resultados de las pruebas piloto de las muestras a granel. Por otro la¬do, un estudio mineralógico general del yacimiento es un requerimiento importante, a veces ignorado, en una evaluación más general pero semicuantitativa de la representatividad de una muestra a granel; y, además, proporciona una información muy útil para optimizar el diseño de la planta.

A flotation process has been developed to successfully treat ore from the Santo Domingo phosphate deposit in Baja California Sur. The ore contained less than 4% P2O5 with quartz, silicates, and carbonates as gangue minerals. Flotation of the low- grade feed in seawater required that the conventional Crago process, comprising direct anionic flotation, deoiling, and inverse cationic flotation, be augmented by an anionic cleaner flotation step, phosphate depression, and a calcite flotation step.

It shortly describes some of the most known classification systems, CMMI and UNFC, and their features, and discusses their advantages and weaknesses. Author also tries to define all the properties, a system should have to be declared as "World Code". Perhaps the ,integration of both systems would best accomplish the task and leave the “interest groups" the freedom to use only those parts of the system, they are interested in.

The nickeliferous laterites of Soroako are described in their setting in the huge Cretaceous ultramafic complexes of central Sulawesi, Indonesia. The ore bodies occur on spurs, ridges and hill flanks beneath remnants of extensive erosional surfaces. Weathering pro- files that have developed on unserpentinized harzburgite and on strongly serpentinized lherzolites show distinctive laterite structures, mineralogy and chemistry. The former are unique to the Soroako area and permit an unusual degree of upgrading by rejection of unserpentinized peridotite boulders. A mass balance calculated for a selection of profiles indicates that in situ leaching of a column of peridotite 20-50 meters thick has taken place with only minor lateral migration of nickel in solution.

The 4000 acre historic Robinson Mining District outside Ely, Nevada hosts a continuum of oxidelsulfide waste rock dumps of different ages. In an effort to develop a paradigm to explain past, existing, and future conditions at the site profiles of oxygen, pH, temperature, and specific conductivity were collected from various waste rock dumps using a hand-driven soil gas probe and a down-hole sampling device. The resulting data are useful in interpreting the fate and manner of pyrite oxidation within the dumps and in identifying waste rock dumps that may require remedial measures compared to those that require only minimal action prior to closure.

The history, current applications and future of biotechnical developments in the metals' extraction industry are reviewed. Bioleaching of copper minerals continues to be the most significant application. Uranium bioleaching was successfully demonstrated at industrial scale. Developments are now being made in biooxidative pretreatment of refractory gold concentrates, ores and low-grade materials. Advancements are forthcoming in water and solid mine waste bioreclamation, including metals' biosorption, wetland treatment of acid mine drainage, and biodegradation of cyanide in spent, heap-leach operations. Better understanding of the types and functions of microorganisms involved in metal interactions could advance genetic engineering applications in bioleaching and bioreclamation.

A kinetic model for the batch leaching of various metals using different lixiviants was developed. The overall material balances for the reactants and products at the solid/ liquid interface were formulated for various types of heterogeneous reactions at the interface. The solutions to these mass balances are identified analytically, as well as numerically. Applications of these numerical solutions to various leaching systems using rotating discs or powders are discussed. The metal-dissolution systems addressed include cobalt, nickel and copper in acid, cyanide and ammoniacal solutions.

Outokumpu developed TankCell flotation cell technology beginning in 1990, following 35 years of successful flotation cell experience and application. In 1994, Outokumpu proved favorable operating success of 100-m3 (3,500-ft3) TankCells for porphyry copper and zinc flotation. In 1995, evaluation of a 150-m3 TankCell led to the successful application of these large cells in several operations. More than 350 TankCells of 100 m3 and larger in volume have been installed and are in operation. Key features of the Outokumpu TankCell design will be described. In addition, discussion of operating data from various metallic mineral flotation operations worldwide will be presented. Large flotation cell development continues today, with operating cell volumes of up to 160 m3 (5,500 ft3) in operation.

INTRODUCTION At present, the capability of production planning software based on Linear Programming (LP) is still limited to the optimization of the single LP-run. This is due to the LP-model itself which cannot consider the interdependencies between individual LP- runs. With regard to planning of selective mining this limited way of optimization frequently leads to situations, where the remaining and accessible ore blocks do no longer allow to produce ROM-ore in the qualitative composition required by the ore processing plant. However, many of the aspects taken into consideration when setting up production plans built from mutually dependent LP-runs cannot be modelled in a system of linear equations. They are thus unsuited for treatment with LP and have to be taken care of by the planning engineer without any assistance by the system. The KBS currently under development is intended to assist the planning engineer in designing a production plan under special consideration of the combination of consecutive LP-runs and blending beds. It is not necessarily intended to find the optimum solution within a given planning situation which is, anyway, hard to determine due to the multitude of influences. The objective is rather to work out a good and - from the practical point of view - feasible production plan. The new aspect with respect to mine planning is the integration of expert knowledge and experiences via the KBS into the planning process in order to support the planning engineer. The planning system is being developed in close cooperation with an iron-ore open pit mine. COMPONENTS OF THE PLANNING SYSTEM The software is being developed on a workstation under UNIX and comprises the components LP, CAD-module and the KBS. The applied multi-goal LP-algorithm is an in-house development of the Department of Mining Engineering at Technical University Berlin. It was already successfully implemented within other mine planning programmes and was only slightly adapted to the specific needs of the present system. Within individual LP- runs it finds the optimum qualitative composition of ore production in the sense of the selected optimizing criterion and under the given restrictions: i.e. it determines tonnages to be mined from blocks in order to optimally meet the requirements of the ore pro- cessing plant. A CAD-module based on the commercial SURPAC package in combination with a simulation device is used to graphically depict the block model and progress of mining. Both LP-algorithm and CAD-package are integrated in the KBS. It has been decided to use the shell NEXPERT OBJECT as it is a hybrid system which supports both rule-based and object-oriented knowledge representation. MINE-MODEL AND LP-MODEL KBS have to be tailor-made for specific planning problems. Therefore, it had to be decided which specifications of the iron-ore mine should be represented in the model. As the limited possibilities of a university institute do not allow to develop a KBS for mine planning which is ready to use in industry, it was decided to concentrate on those characteristics that can be regarded as typical for iron-ore surface mines and that seemed to be suited for treatment with knowledge-based techniques. The following chapter summarizes the most important features of the mine model. The description of the requirements to the mine's sales products is followed by an outline of the applied LP-model. Mine model • The model of the mine as it is used for planning consists of • the block model of the deposit, • the mobile equipment, • stockpiles and blending bed and • the requirements to the sales products. The deposit is described by a block model which contains data on the chemical composition, LOI, grain size and tonnages. Grain size was included as it is important for the two sales products of the mine. Furthermore, it is known whichs blocks require and which don't require blasting; this is relevant to the assignment of loading equipment to individual blocks. The blocks are devided in three categories: • ore, which will directly be taken to the blending bed; • waste, which will be put on the waste dump; and • blocks which will be either transported to the blending bed, to stockpiles or to the waste dump depending on the specific planning situation. This decision is made during planning. Neighboring blocks are combined in mining areas to which the loading equipment is individually assigned. Mobile equipment comprises shovels and wheel-loaders as well as trucks. The characteristics of the loading equipment are important for their ability to load different blocks and for the permissible degree of their re-positioning etc. The mine disposes of a blending bed for homogenization of the production, of a waste dump, and of several stockpiles with different ore qualities. The requirement to make only limited use of the stockpiles for economic reasons is included in the KBS. According to long term planning two commercial products have to be produced, which differ both in grain size and qualitative composition (TABLE 1). Their mass-proportions in the blending bed have to be within a fixed range. Not considered in long term planning is the occasional need for lump ore, which occurs at very short notice and has to be produced in a "campaign-like" manner. The comminution laws The grindability of the ores or minerals is an important factor that could not be deduced from their mineralogical characteristics (Testut, 1958). Many theories have been proposed to determine the amount of work required in a comminution operation as a function of the nature of material, size and shape of the minerals before and after of comminution. The most important laws are proposed by Rittinger, Kick and Bond. According to Rittinger (1867), the work is directly proportional to the new surfaces produced during the comminution. Kick (1885) believes that the work needed to produce similar modification is proportional to the volume or mass of the material. Bond, during his 25 years of experience and research, reached to the conclusion that on the average the energy required for a known comminution is between the Rittinger's and Kick's laws (Bond, 1952). According to Bond's Third Theory, the work input is proportional to the new crack tip length produced during the particle breakage, and equals the work represented by the product minus that represented by the feed. The work input is given by the following equation: [111W = 1 Owi( FP FF(1)] where W is the The energy input to the mill, (kWh/st); F is the Feed size based on 80% passed, (µm); P is the Product size based on 80% passed, (µm); and W; is the Work Index, (kWh/st) Methods to determine the Bond Work Index Various methods have been proposed by Bond to determine the Work Index. There are some problems with the Standard Bond Grindability Test: •Requiring a special mill. •Requiring a relatively large amount of sample. •Being relatively time consuming and tedious. [ ] During the recent years, numerous attempts have been made to install faster and easier methods to determine the Work Index. A complete description of these methods is presented by Yap et al. (1982). Determining the Bond Work Index by a new size ball mill During the recent years, researchers at the University of Tehran determined the Bond Work Index, using the Anaconda simplified methods by its Denver 305- x 127-mm (12 x 5-in.) laboratory wet ball mill. The equation used to calculate the Work Index for the above mill containing 16.12 kg (35.5 lbs) of steel balls is as follow: [1 _ 1-1W;=0.54x [P [)(2)] In addition, an attempt has been made to determine the Bond Work Index similar to standard Bond ball mill procedure but by a different ball mill, smaller and in consequent portable and less laborious than the Bond ball mill. Method description Just as the standard Bond grindability test, this method is a locked-cycle dry grinding and screening process that is carried out until steady state condition is reached. Test equipment The test is conducted in a special ball mill, called the New Size Ball Mill (NSBM). The mill is scaled down with a coefficient of two-thirds from the standard Bond ball mill. It measures 200 x 200 mm (8- x 8-in.) inside (instead of 300 x 300 mm or 12 x 12 in. in Bond ball mill). Just like the Bond

"During the design of a typical modern subway, engineering aspects prevail since underground structures remain hidden to most humans. Aligning the advanced architectural concepts with the engineering requirements of the Naples Metro Line 1 (Italy) called for a thorough rethinking of the design process so that the engineering could be kept aligned with the architecture, integrating seamlessly the two with the construction methods, standards and technology.The preliminary design process consisted of three major phases: •,geotechnical and geological issues, preselection of construction methods; •,functional scenario based on engineering and construction requirements; •,review and merging of the architectural concept with the functional and engineering aspects. The last phase proved the most demanding one, matching the first outline sketches with the applicable construction methods. This required continuous alignment of approaches, eventually leading to the design consistent with the original architectural vision, yet fully compliant with the engineering and construction framework. At the beginning general information on Line 1 will be provided, followed by some main features of the construction work along the Dante – Garibaldi section both for the tunnel and the stations. At the end, the selected methodology and the related consequences on the functional, technical and architectural design will be outlined.City of Naples current municipal transportation plan envisages a circle ring line for the metro line M1. Actually it’s open to public the segment Piscinola – Dante – Garibaldi run by AMM, municipal company. This ring segment has been built by Metropolitana di Napoli, while Napoli Metro Engineering (company belonging to MMspa Group) is in charge for the planning of entire system and construction management. The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

The price of copper has gone into the tank. So has gold. Environmental regulations are more restrictive. Global warming has world leaders and environmental groups seeking international regulations to keep the planet from heating up - mostly by restricting the use of fossil fuels. And the US Secretary of the Interior wants to make it more costly -prohibitively so for smaller companies - to mine hard rock metals in the United States. By rights, miners should be carrying around a pessimistic attitude about their industry. But miners are an optimistic lot, always believing that things will improve. That optimism was in evidence in Tucson, AZ in early December, when about 620 miners met at the Double- tree Hotel for the Annual Meeting of the Arizona Conference, put on by SME. Attendees listened as a United States congressman commented on the recent tax cut bill, mining regulations and the continuing need for the mining industry to improve its image in the eyes of the general public. Session speakers discussed how improved technology has made their processing operations at Sierrita and Morenci more efficient and cost-effective.

Several processes involving injection of sorbent and humidification water downstream of the air preheater in a coal-fired boiler unit, are being developed as low capital cost retrofit S02 control options. Extensive laboratory work, pilot plant programs and larger scale programs have developed performance data and design information. Many of these programs were supported by the U. S. Department of Energy (DOE) as "proofs-of-concept" of three different processes proposed by Dravo, Bechtel and General Electric. Based on these project results, DOE formulated a comprehensive in-duct sorbent injection development program to fully commercialize the technology by 1992. Also, EPRI will conduct a 4 MWe pilot program to develop its HYPAS process. The Consol Coolside process is scheduled for utility demonstration in 1989 on a 104 MWe unit at the Ohio Edison Edgewater Station under partial sponsorship of the DOE Clean Coal Technology Program.

Mine managers need useful data to support production and maintenance decisions; for example, to evaluate the performance of replacement components. Today, managers rely solely on past experience, supervisors, opinions, and time studies. Our paper describes the concepts and algorithms we are developing for an automatic, intelligent decision support system (IDSS) that will aid managers by reducing and analyzing large amounts of, monitoring system sensor data and report only key production and maintenance information.. IDSS contains a pattern recognition, subsystem (IDSS/PRS) prototype to report graphical trends in traditional time study elements. We are designing. and prototyping a knowledge representation subsystem, using Knowledge Craft Tools, that will learn and adapt to the dynamic mine environment and reason about the recognized patterns using representations of manager's knowledge, equipment, capabilities, and mine layout and operating procedures. This subsystem will reduce, large quantities of time study type information to key issues that interest different managers.

The authors have been interested in stress measurements in the rock mass for a long time. This paper describes the development of new apparatus for stress measurements in a rock mass. The principle of stress measurement by this device is based on the relief method as applied on the conical shaped surface of the bottom of a borehole. The design started based on the experience of K. Sugawara and Y. Obara who have been using the compact conical borehole over-coring system (CCBO). The conical shape of the strain gauge probe CCBO makes the fixation of the probe in borehole easy and, also, makes the measurement of stress in independent directions possible. The principle of the measuring method, the preparation of the borehole, the design of the probe for continuous measurement of stress during the course of overcoring are described. Also, a simplified version of the probe for long term monitoring of stress variations in the rock mass by means of the inserted body method and the initial laboratory results and in-situ testing of the development sample are described. Additionally, testing was done regarding the possible glues in relationship to the creep effect for this case.
