INTRODUCTION A physical separation partitions a stream of particles into two streams - one containing a concentration of a desirable constituent; the other containing a defficiency - on the basis of a difference in physical properties. Separating ores into concentrates of increased grade and gangue minerals has been practiced for thousands of years. Physical properties of materials which have been used to achieve separations include size, relative density, shape, magnetism, surface charge, color, characteristic emission, resilience and strength. The study of physical separations has also been termed attribute tracking. The term attribute is used to describe the content of the material of interest, or, sometimes, properties not used as a basis of the separation. Borehole mining, as a viable concept for recovering deep sedimentary mineral resources, historically has been long on promise but short on results. Application of the technology seems best suited for recovery of Miocene phosphate resources on the East Coast of the US. These deposits are potentially enormous in scope and underlie sections of the coastal plain and the near offshore continental shelf. The landside portion of these deposits is generally too deep to mine using conventional open pit methods. Recovery of these minerals requires development of alternative mining systems. A significant proportion of the offshore resources appear to occur at depths below the practical limits of cutter suction dredges and may even exceed the limits of bucket ladder dredges. In most cases, these deposits are covered by overburden that must he removed and redeposited before the mineral section can be mined. The depth, thickness, composition of overburden and environmental sensitivity of a particular location would greatly impact mining system selection. It is probable that dredging would not be an environmentally acceptable mining method in many of the areas underlain by this phosphate rock. In cases such as these, new processes such as borehole mining must be evolved or the resource will remain undeveloped. A borehole mining test program, using an existing prototype borehole system, successfully extracted Miocene phosphate in northeast Florida in 1984-1985. The top of the main mineral zone was 80 m (261 ft) below the surface. Based on the results of this test program. plus subsequent laboratory testing and engineering studies, a new prototype borehole mining system was designed in 1986. This design incorporated several innovations of offering potentially higher productivity and lower power consumption than was achieved with the previous test unit. Economic restraints at that tine prevented the actual construction and testing of this new design.

Methane drainage methods can be broadly classified as surface or underground. Surface methods make use of vertical and slant holes. The underground method discussed in the present paper involves horizontal drilling from shaft bottoms and from locations along the periphery of mines. Every foot of hole drilled in coal from under- ground locations is productive and gas flows increase as hole length increases. Therefore, underground techniques have a great potential for producing large-volume flows of methane. Pumps to dewater the horizontal holes are not necessary because gas pressure forces the water out of the hole. Methane can be recovered through the use of a simple and inexpensive gas-water separator. Hydraulic fracturing, which has been used successfully to stimulate gas flows from vertical holes, has not proved practical in the case of horizontal holes.

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

Cyanide is a conventional lixiviant for gold extraction but its' toxicity is a major concern for the environmentalist. There are many alternative non-cyanide lixiviants, such as thiourea, thiosulphate, chlorine and hypochlorite etc., which may reduce environmental sensitivity. This paper will discuss the leaching characteristics of gold in hypochlorite leaching solutions. The dissolution of gold in a hypochlorite solution not only depends on the concentration of the hypochlorite but also on other variables, such as hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride and temperature. The dissolution rate of gold in hypochlorite solution is much faster than other lixiviants. Due to the interference of impurities, gold extraction from an ore under ambient conditions requires large quantities of reagents. However, refractory gold ores may be successfully pressure oxidized in an autoclave at reasonably low reagent levels. Gold extraction to the pressure oxidation leach solution is rapid and complete in one stage, thus eliminating the need for further cyanidation.

External control of the electrochemical potential of a bed of mineral particles was investigated by the US Bureau of Mines as a method for controlling particle interaction with organic collectors and, thus, flotation response. A cylindrically shaped, 200- to 300-g bed of sulfide mineral particles was used as the working electrode in an electrochemical-flotation cell. In a pH 9.2 sodium tetraborate buffer, chalcocite floated with ethylxanthate at applied potentials [=] - 0.25 V (versus the standard hydrogen electrode) ; pyrite floated at potentials [=] 0.15 V. Differential separation of a chalcocite-pyrite mineral mixture was obtained by controlling the potential, but the flotation response of the mixture did not follow the behavior predicted from measurements on the individual mineral beds. Chalcocite dissolution products had a deleterious effect on chalcocite-pyrite separation by activating pyrite so that it floated below the potential (~ 0.13 V) at which xanthate is oxidized to dixanthogen. A pyrite bed activated with a copper(II) sulfate solution exhibited a flotation response with a potential dependence between that of chalcocite and pyrite. Pyrite dissolution products had no effect on chalcocite flotation.

Two automated fire detection system configurations have been used successfully in underground mines: the pneumatic "tube bundle" approach and the electronic telemetry approach. The electronic telemetry approach is more widely used, owing to its greater speed, flexibility, and capacity to both monitor other underground conditions, and remotely control underground equipment. However, depending on specific mine conditions and layouts, pneumatic detection, or a combined pneumatic/telemetered system may offer significant advantages over the telemetered approach alone. This paper describes research by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to design and in- mine test a rapid response pneumatic fire detection system tailored to the unique requirements of multilevel metal mines. The relative merits of pneumatic detection are discussed in the context of typical multilevel mine layouts and environments. A Bureau developed proto- type system is described with emphasis on design features which counter commonly perceived and/or experienced pneumatic detection system operating problems. Finally, the results of a 3-yr in-mine performance evaluation of the prototype hardware are discussed. Included are descriptions of system layout and coverage, response time, tube leakage, sample dilution, elimination of accumulated water from sample lines, and system maintenance and reliability.

Red bauxites from Breadnut Valley, Clarendon Parish, Jamaica, are very homogeneous in texture. Bauxite minerals are uniformly distributed in a groundmass, the predominant grain size being smaller than l um (Figure 1 Although the deposits have a massive, non-stratified structure, they all seem to have been affected by postformational faulting which is evidenced by shear zones running subvertically through the deposits. These shear zones stand out very clearly because of a yellow staining along their faces. Often yellow zones, ranging from a few m to several cm in thickness, have developed. When the shear zones are cut at an angle, they appear as yellow veins. Near the surface of the deposits, yellow material forms shallow irregular lenses (Figure 2). In most cases, tree roots (hair roots), or their imprints, are associated with the shear zones or stained areas. In fact, the yellowish color is especially pronounced along these roots and often disappears where the roots end (Figure 3). The mineral composition and texture of red groundmass and yellow zones are markedly different. Secondary phosphate minerals and a higher goethite to hematite ratio characterize the mineral composition of the yellow zones. It should also be noted that Al-substitution in goethite from these areas is significantly higher than in goethite occurring in the groundmass (Figure 4).

This investigation involves the development of a two-dimensional continuum model for the description of jointed media. Specific application of the model developed here is for the potential geological disposal of radioactive waste in the layered sequence of fractured volcanic tuffs under Yucca Mountain, Nevada. This is currently being considered by the Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations Project, administered by the Nevada Operations Office of the U. S. Department of Energy. The work is a direct extension of the previous constitutive model by Thomas (1982) based on the work of Morland (1974). The main feature of Thomas's model includes two parts: a continuum approximation based on average discontinuous displacements across jointing planes within a representative elementary volume, and a material constitutive description based on linear elastic matrix material behavior and nonlinear normal and shear joint behavior between jointing planes. The mathematical descriptions by Morland based on strain partitioning among matrix material and joint sets allow multiple joint sets to be included in the model. However, the initial effort by Thomas to implement Morland's mathematical model included only a single set of joints. To make the material model reflect more realistically the field characteristics, the current work extended Thomas's model to include orthogonal sets of joints. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior is retained in the present model. Joint shear response was treated as linear elastic in the shear stress versus shear displacement relationship prior to attaining the stress level governed by the Coulomb friction criterion. Beyond this critical stress value, a horizontal line is assumed in the work of Thomas for the shear stress versus slip displacement relationship such that the shear stress remains constant while the slip displacement increases. Motivated by experimental observation, the current work generalized the shear response to allow a line with finite slope to govern the slip behavior beyond the critical stress level. The inclusion of an orthogonal joint set led to a fourth order algebraic equation for the calculation of stress increments as compared with a second order equation obtained by Thomas. The nonlinear elastic normal joint behavior provides criteria which allow the selection of the root that yields result consistent with the loading condition of the problem. The addition of one more set of joints provides the potential to more completely study the interaction of various parameters representing the characteristics of jointed media behavior. Material responses to various loading conditions based on the present constitutive model have been obtained. These results and their comparisons to single joint set results are presented. Silicon oxynitride, Si2N20, has many of the intrinsic properties of a potential high temperature engineering ceramic material. Some of these properties are similar to those of silicon nitride, which has been more intensively studied. However, although silicon nitride ceramics are approaching a state of microstructural refinement for various engineering applications, silicon oxynitride has received little attention. This has been mainly due to a lack of an economical and reproducible method of producing pure crystalline Si2N2O. Several reports exist on the preparation of crystalline Si2N2O from SiO2 and Si3N4, yet very little kinetic data exist. Even less is known about the carbothermic reduction of SiO2 in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce Si2N2O. In this paper, a review of the properties and methods of preparing silicon oxynitride will be presented. In addition, results obtained by reactively sintering SiO2 and Si3N4 will be discussed. In many of the lignite mines in Greece that supply the nearby power plants, the lignite deposits are multilayered and faults destroy the spatial continuity. This fact complicates lignite exploitation and the profitability evaluation of each layer. The location of a lignite layer could be so deep compared to other layers, that its exploitation would not be profitable. The purpose of this paper is the development of a suitable profitability index to help with the evaluation of the profitability of separate lignite layers. The definition of the profitability index is given and an algorithm is formulated that calculates the profitability index and evaluates whether each layer should be mined by comparison with a critical threshold value. The profitability index algorithm is applied to the multilayered lignite deposit of Amyndeo mine. It should be noted that the proposed index could be used in any kind of multilayered deposit, not just lignite.

The Umuna epithermal precious metal deposit has provided the target for a simulated rock geochemistry exploration program, directed at bedrock exposed in the drainage system of eastern Misima Island. A geochemical halo to the deposit is readily recognised in the mafic meta-volcanic country rock. This halo is defined by anomalous results for both major (K, Na, Ca, Mg) and minor (Au, As, Sb, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ba, Rb, Sr, Cs, Bi, Ga, S) element geochemistry, extending further than 1km from the deposit. Such halos are sufficiently extensive to provide adequate exploration targets in the search for epithermal mineralisation, complementing mineralogic and secondary media geochemical investigations.

The multicomponent reactive transport model MIN3P can be used to simulate the evolution of pore water, pore gas, and the mineralogical composition in mine waste environments. The model is formulated for variably-saturated conditions, considers transport of dissolved and gaseous species, and describes geochemical reactions based on a partial equilibrium formulation. Reaction processes included are complexation, oxidation-reduction, ion-exchange, mineral dissolution-precipitation and gas exsolution- dissolution reactions. An example application, describing the generation of acid mine drainage and subsequent reactive transport for a ID-vertical profile in a tailings impoundment near Elliot Lake, Ontario, is provided.

"INTRODUCTION Tunneling and underground excavation is related to handling of uncertainties, risks associated with geological conditions are significant and ‘unexpected geological conditions’ often claimed. This fact was brought to the table long ago, and ITA (the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association) published its 25 Recommendations on Contractual Sharing of Risks in 1988 (Ref. 1). This public-cation constitutes an important asset to the tunneling industry in terms of being a guideline for those working with contractual issues, even today almost 30 years after being published. A more recent document is the ITIG code of practice for risk management of tunnel works from 2015 (Ref. 9). Various countries or geographical regions have their own view and tradition on risk sharing and tunnel contracts. In Scandinavia unit rates contracts are most commonly used with bid-build model, it shares risk between owner and contractor, owner retains the risk for geological conditions while contractor carries risk for performance efficiency. Rock strengthening is determined assessing rock mass quality encountered at tunnel face. Grouting is applied to stem water. Actual quantities may differ from the contract’s BoQ but a flexible contract with remuneration is installed to enable adjustment of actual quantities. Variations of quantities involve a clause to adjust construction time. Unit price contracts deals with expected and foreseen still ‘unexpected geological conditions’, if the ‘unexpected’ element results in variations in quantities. Work activities have quantities and ‘standard capacities’ for regulation of construction time. Variations in quantities are expected in tunnelling and hardly deserve the term ‘unexpected’. If truly unforeseen geological features necessitate work not included in the BoQ, then the contract must be supplemented and can be said to be inappropriate. Fixed price contracts may not provide the intended predictable cost and is as such also inappropriate in the view of a risk sharing principle, once the geological baseline proves to be incorrect. ‘Adjustable fixed price’ contracts, combining unit rate and fixed price, may prove suitable."

Roadheaders, also called Boom Miners or Boom-type Tunneling Machines have been in North America since 1968, when first introduced by Willy Kogelmann, the founder of Alpine Equipment Corp. (?Alpine?). Roadheaders were invented in Europe in the late 1940s. Machines with in-line, axial cutter heads were developed in the former Soviet Union. The British Dosco DRCL is based on the Russian PK-3 roadheader. Roadheaders with transverse ?ripper? cutter heads were invented in Hungary (1). The Austrian-made Alpine Miners of VOEST-Alpine, purchased by Sandvik AB, are based on a 1965 Hungarian license. Roadheaders are widely used in the mining and tunneling industries because they can excavate drifts, entries and tunnels with cross sections of any shape and size, can handle mixed faces, work on steep grades, and negotiate tight curves and cross-cuts. A roadheader?s only major limitation is the strength and abrasiveness of rock and minerals to be excavated. This paper covers roadheader selection criteria, improvements in reliability, attachments for flexibility (Multi-Tool Miner), and automated support systems for increased cutting time for increased shift production.

Iron ores may be upgraded by flotation of iron oxides or siliceous gangue using either cationic or anionic collectors. The electrostatic mechanism of adsorption can account for the complex chemistry involved. In industrial practice, only cationic silica flotation is used at present in North America. Some of the seemingly paradoxical phenomena of cationic silica flotation behaviors in meeting the demand for low silica concentrates are reviewed.

Lack of understanding the major process parameters and inadequate scale-up factors have led to the belief that fundamental knowledge is not important for successful flotation plant operations. Flotation of simple and easy to process ores may not require a strong fundamental knowledge base for day to day operations. However, as low grade complex ores are mined and process control is integrated into flotation schemes, it is imperative for a plant operator to acquire a strong background in the basics of the flotation process at hand and/or have access to such a knowledge base at short notice. In order to meet the challenges of unexpected changes in the feed, reagent quality, water chemistry, physical, mechanical and hydrodynamic conditions, the flotation plant superintendent/chief metallurgist must have a strong background in the flotation fundamentals.

The paper presents the outline of the results in the algorithms and software of the microprocessor-based system for the powerful drugline bucket automatic motion, as well as the technological process control and functional diagnostics of the electrical equipment. The system is, aimed at the increasing both the draglines' working efficiency and the professional, competence of the operators. The excavator-dragline, equipped by the automatized operation, diagnostic and information processing system, possesses considerable technological: flexibility, which can widen therefore its field of application. The tasks of the dragline bucket motion optimal operation, programming of the excavation and overburden dumping processes, as well as the tasks of the control and the analysis of the technological parameters and the diagnostics of electrical equipment conditions, are defined in the paper. In our paper we present the results of these tasks being solved, providing the algorithms of the main mechanisms for the automatic operation for the swinging bucket controlled motion, the algorithms of the statistical analysis of the working efficiency parameters the algorithms of the diagnostics for electrical driving systems. The algorithms of the motion operation are constructed using the predicting dynamic models. The diagnostic algorithms at the normal working conditions form a number of algebraic invariants always equal to Ø with the accuracy up to when the electrical equipment is parametrically adequate. The algorithms of evaluating and analysis of the excavation efficiency make use of the direct measurement and analytical identification. The working condition and quality of the operation and control algorithms are investigated by simulation and natural testing. The results of the mathematical simulation of the bucket motion (with the 20 m3 capacity) of the excavator-dragline with the boom of 90 m in length are given in the paper.

The successful management of large dispersed mineral operations is dependent upon accurate and timely decision making. The plant locations providing the data to support the decision making process are generally separated by distances which elongate the time required to accumulate the data at a central focus. The need exists to examine operational data in context with total mining operations, and in relation to target projections and historical trends. The use of microcomputers for local information tasks is an established capability. Grouping microcomputers into local-area networks is rapidly becoming established. Interconnecting multiple local-area networks to provide a free flowing stream of information between all operational locations of a mining enterprise is possible with use of some emerging technologies. The benefit of the potential interconnections and rapid transfer of information can readily be seen from a production reporting perspective. Numerous other advantages exist' by providing routing to enable a workgroup to be established between separated work functions.
