When the Trelleborg Divisions of Boliden Allis and MPSI merged, a unique opportunity occurred for two independent mill fabricators to compare various design procedures and the research upon which they were based. This paper documents such a comparison in the structural design area. Several SAG mill analyses are compared using both Boliden Allis and MPSI methods. The differences and similarities are then utilized in a correlation of critical stress definitions and the acceptable design and inspection criteria.

In grinding-classification circuit, overgrinding, resulted from the fact that hydrophobic materials have higher density than hydrophilicmaterials, has been known as a knotty problem. By using of the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) as classifier, in this pair, the overgrinding of hydrophobic materials has been successfully minimized. Compared with the conventional hydrocyclones, the ASH has less fine hydrophobic particles in the underflow and less large particles in the overflow, which shows that the recovery of fine hydrophobic particles in the overflow has been improved in the ASH.

For variable speed mills, the operating range for mill speed has to be defined so that mill power/torque requirement can be matched by the motor power/torque capability. This paper will describe how this relationship can be influenced by ore grindability.

Distribution of temperature within the lithosphere can be significantly affected by the movement of ground water. Stallman (1960) presented the basic equation for the simultaneous transfer of heat and fluid in a porous medium and first used earth temperatures to determine aquifer permeability. Subsequently, studies of rock and soil temperatures were used to determine the flow of water through clay layers separating aquifers (Bredehoeft and Papadopulos, 1965; and Sorey, 1971), and to locate shallow aquifers (Cartwright, 1968; Birman, 1969). Cartwright (1968) showed that shallow aquifers maintain a nearly constant temperature throughout the year and that heat is exchanged between the aquifer and land surface. These temperature data also suggest that shallow aquifers hydrologically connected to surface-water systems have significantly greater effect on temperature distribution than aquifers in the deep artesian basins. Water wells developed in the shallow glacial and dolomite aquifers to depths of over 122 meters (400 feet) in northern and central Illinois produce water at temperatures very close to the mean annual air temperature. An analysis of the character of the rocks and soils suggests that the tem¬perature gradient should, and does, vary according to changes in thermal conductivity due to changes in lithology. This is because, under conditions of steady and uniform flow of heat from the earth's interior to the surface, a greater temperature gradient is required in poorly conductive rocks than in highly conductive rocks to transmit the same quantity of heat. INTRODUCTION The requirements of mine ventilation demand the constant attention of the mine operator. Just as the physical mine structure changes with time, the ventilation requirements of a particular mine change considerably from season to season and even from day to day. No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; and all systems require monitoring and adjustments to achieve proper ventilation. Instead of being given fore- thought and planning, mine-ventilation systems too of- ten are erected hastily, merely to correct an already un- healthy situation. The usual result is an inefficient and costly system that, in some instances, may prove in- effective in providing fresh air to the point of need. The ventilation of mines is a combination of both art and science. The fluid that must be moved is in- visible; its properties change drastically with temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity; and the methods of measurement are not precise. In part, ventilation engineering must rely upon the art of good industrial ventilation experience and sometimes even the trial-and- error method. However, the properties of air can be determined with relatively inexpensive equipment; with some care, measurement accuracies within 5% of the actual values can be obtained. Thus the art of ventilation gradually is being supplanted by improved engineering practices. Although the direction of flow and the volume may not be predicted correctly by airflow equations in every situation, it is better to try to predict the behavior of a given ventilation before installation than to proceed blindly with a system design. When used with the discretion that comes from education and experience, the basic laws of ventilation can provide sub-stantial insight into the design of an air-handling system; and they can prevent wasteful or even dangerous designs from being installed. Since the mine operators who read this text will have varying amounts of exposure to ventilation theory, the basic laws of airflow and of mechanical ventilation are presented in the first section. The emphasis has been placed on the interpretation and use of fan characteristic curves that are supplied by fan manufacturers. Considerable information can be obtained from these fan curves, particularly when they are used with a graphic model of the mine, drift, or duct in which the fan or fans are to be installed. A few minutes spent comparing the various characteristic curves can help the designer obtain the correct fan for the job. However, the under- standing of a few fundamentals is necessary; and this text has been prepared to provide ample and understandable information in a "how-to" style. In subsequent sections of this text, more down-to- earth subjects will be covered, including the problems of air recirculation, relative merits of installing fans in series or in parallel, expected maintenance requirements (vibration, lubrication intervals, etc.), fan noise and some remedies, effect of an inlet bell on the fan per- formance, basic air-measurement techniques and equipment, and similar miscellaneous items. Although this text is not intended to be a comprehensive bible of mine ventilation, it has been prepared as a guide that provides some useful information to individuals responsible for the quality of the underground environment. Every person working underground is en- titled to the safest environment that can be provided within the limitations of existing technology and at a reasonable cost. 4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

The reagents commercially used in coal flotation and their roles are reviewed and discussed According to their function the reagents are divided into often overlapping groups: 1. Collectors 2. Frothers 3. Conditioning Reagents Frothers have by far the largest effect on the amount of coal recovered They act not only in their traditionally accepted function of “bubble makers”, but in coal flotation they serve in a seldom acknowledged role of collectors. A lab flotation study on four samples of different coal ranks shows how these react to various frother families and proves that no froher is the optimum reagent for all types of coal. The advent of new technology in flotation equipment in the past decade has resulted in various novel designs of column cells, Jameson and Centrifloat™ cells, air-sped hydrocylones, etc. All should require special frothers or blends of frothers to meet their specific needs.

Accurate modeling of the semivariogram is an extremely important step in the geostatistical analysis of mineral deposits. Automatic fitting of a mathematical model is often possible but not necessarily desirable. Significant geologic and statistical information must be taken into account in the fitting process, which is not always available to the computer. Manual fitting of the model is, on the other hand, extremely time consuming. Interactive graphics are best suited to optimize the process. A number of interactive methods are described, which are adapted to the modeling of semivariograms in one-, two-, or three-dimensional environments.

The pressure of military use of quartz resonators led to efforts to Grow high, grade quartz crystals in Germany and in Great Britain during 19)3-25, and was responsible for a series of U.S.A. The technique of growing crystals from the melt, such as KI, NaBr, was already commercially inuse Quartz could not be so grown, since its utility depends on the form stable below 573°C, and, even if it could be grown from an extraordinarily viscous melt, the higher form passing through this transition becomes twinned. Again, several crystals were being grown commercially from water solutions; quartz, however, is listed in the common literature as being insoluble in water. Fused quartz, or vitreous silica, was chosen as raw mater¬ial by the European experimenters because of its thermodynamically lesser stability than quartz, and various alkaline solutions were tried for the purpose of enhancing the solubility.

(1) A great deal of experimentation has been carried out by the Wet Process Cement Manufacturers in connection with additives which make possible the production of a pumpable slurry at reduced moisture contents. We ourselves have made dozens of tests both at Laramie, Wyoming and Monolith, California. (2) The viscosity or pumpability of a slurry at a definite moisture content and fineness seems to depend on two basic phenomena. One is the physical structure of the raw material itself, which on fine grinding may or may not be excessively hydrophilic (water adsorptive). Usually crystaline or glassy raw materials are non- hydrophilic. The fine grained amorphous raw materials such as shales and clayey limestones very frequently are, however. (3) The second basic phenomenon affecting the hydrophilic tendencies of the raw material is the presence of certain soluble salts, especially gypsum and small amounts of alkalin carbonates or oxides. (4) Various soaps, and phosphates can be used to produce a pumpable slurry of low moisture content when using hydrophilic raw materials as well as can other proprietary materials such as certain long chain carbon compounds. Too frequently however, the price of such additives in conjunction with the amount required prohibits their use in the cement industry.

The water treatment industry has historically been involved with reducing or inhibiting the inherant scale forming or fouling tendencies of natural waters associated with large industrial cooling water systems. Fouling is an extremely complex phenomenon. From a fundamental point of view, it may be characterized as a combined momentum, heat, and mass transfer problem. Chemical reaction kinetics is involved, as well as the solubility characteristics of salts in water and corrosion technology. It is a routine practice to over size pumps, piping and heat exchangers to compensate for fouling.

A series of batch flotation tests was performed on chalcopyrite-quartzite, pyrrhotite-quartzite, and on chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-quartzite mixtures. Pulp potential measurements in the flotation tests of single sulfide minerals indicated that each sulfide mineral had its own optimum potential range for flotation. When these results were used to select the potential ranges for the separation of the two minerals from their mixture, their flotation responses changed and the selectivity of separation was adversely affected. A possible mechanism involving surface alteration through galvanic interaction is discussed. A method to improve the selectivity of flotation separation was proposed.

Industry requires higher speed sheet stacking. High speed sheet stacking requires equipment and techniques to solve several inherent difficult problems, such as the tendency for sheets to sail, and the need for a means to absorb the kinetic energy of the sheet without damaging the sheet. Accurate alignment of the sheets on the stack is another problem difficult to solve. The paper first analyzes the process of sheet handling into its basic elemental steps. It then describes equipment and techniques presently used for moderate sheet handling speeds, with emphasis on how each step in the stacking process is accomplished by the present equipment. The limitations to speed-up of present equipment is discussed. New high speed equipment, either recently introduced to the market, or in the process of development, is described. Magnetic, air float and vacuum conveyor stackers are compared.

Tool and cutterhead wear is a crucial issue in soft ground tunneling, especially because tool inspection, maintenance, and replacement are done under difficult conditions, and often under pressurized faces or under ?hyperbaric interventions?. Overall, tool inspection and changing is a time consuming and costly step, which needs to be quantified and the related costs accounted for in any construction contract for scheduling and costing of the tunnels at design stage or bid preparation. However, lack of a universally accepted index or measure for soil abrasivity in the geotechnical reports has made it difficult, if not impossible, to define cutter wear for this purpose. Soil abrasion and its impact on cutting tools for tunneling machines under dry or wet conditions have recently been under spot light due to construction claims in several of the recent tunneling projects. The objective of this paper is to examine soil?s physical, mechanical and tribological properties related to the interface of the soil and excavation tools and discuss ways to measure soil abrasivity in a quantitative and repeatable manner. The paper will discuss the efforts that are underway to develop a new soil abrasivity index and the fabrication of a new testing device for this purpose.

As one of the major suppliers of the chestnut Ridge energy center, Rochester and Pittsburgh Coal Company continues the search for more efficient haulage systems. This search is one that is essential in providing coal to the Keystone and Homer City power plants at the most economical cost. These two electrical generating plants located in west central Pennsylvania are part of the energy center which consists of four generating stations. Prior to the time the two stations were put on line, August, 1967 for Keystone and August, 1969 for Homer City, our company made the decision to rely on belt conveyors from the section to the surface to provide for continuous main line haulage. The proximity of these generating stations to proven reserves allow for minimal truck haulage and minemouth setups. With the addition of seven new mines, in the past ten years, revisions have been made on the original setup to interconnect the haulage of several mines to deliver the product by belt to the power plants.

The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

Digital photography combined with three dimensional models of topography, mining operations and restoration plans can lead to extremely realistic images and animations of the current and future states of a mine or quarry. The amount of work and the time required for the successful modeling of a mine and its restoration plan are surprisingly low nowadays. All this means that the visual impact of mining and quarrying operations can be easily assessed using common computer hardware and some dedicated software packages. LAVA Mining and Quarrying SA is a company committed to strive continuously for the highest possible environment protection at the company?s quarries. The pozzolanic rock quarry located at Xylokeratia is one of the company?s quarries on the island of Milos and the subject of the study presented in this paper. A thorough restoration plan of the Xylokeratia quarry is being completed by the company. For its purposes, a complete visual impact assessment study was performed at the Department of Geotechnology and Environmental Engineering of the Technological Education Institute of Western Macedonia. The procedures used in this study and the produced visual results are presented in this paper.

In order to plan the most efficient mine installation, a company should take advantage of all available information and tools. One of the first factors of a coal reserve that needs to be determined as accurately as possible is the quality of coal the mine will have access to during the life of the installation. With the aid of many types of well logs and computor analysis, we are investigating several methods of log correlation to determine such data as moisture, ash, sulphur, and BTU on an in place basis. It may be possible to determine this data more accurately in this manner than by using diamond drill cores for analysis and thus allow for a more profitable mine installation. The production of an underground mine is based on many factors, two of these being roof control and line water, where present either in the roof or coal seam. Using many of the same logs obtained from reserve and active mine areas, we have attempted to determine roof and floor characteristics such as strength, lithology, and moisture properties. Using data obtained from this program, we will make comments on possible length of bolt to be used, possible mining width, and pillar size as they would pertain to these reserves and active mine areas.

Although past investigations (2, 5)have been conducted to determine crushing relationships, no program which covered a broad range of crushing conditions had been conducted. The previous studies appear to concentrate on small segments of the overall picture and did not fullfill our desired information objectives. The Crusher Variables Research Program conducted at the Mineral Research and Test Center (MRTC) of Rexnord, due to the broad range of variables utilized in a production size crusher, is believed to be the most comprehensive study of its kind as of this date. The principles developed by the Symons brothers in 1925, when they patented the cone crusher as we know it today, are still being used in the machine known as the Symons Cone Crusher, During the development of this novel crushing concept, a technique known as the fall of material (called the Bouncing Ball Theory1 by some) was used to determine an idea as to the proper head angle, eccentric and speed of eccentric rotation, The final variables used for the Symons Cone Crusher design were, therefore, the logical conditions to start with and use as a reference against which other variables could be compared.

The selective adhesion of hydrophobic Mycobacterium phlei to coal particles is responsible for flocculation of fine coal from associated ash forming minerals. The driving force for the differential adhesion is the hydrophobic interactions between the fatty acid surface of the organism and hydrophobic nature of coal. The effect of Mycobacterium phlei on surface hydrophobicity, surface charge and mechanism of adhesion on coal and associated minerals are controlled by several factors including hydrophobicity and surface and solution chemistry of the system. Adhesion measurements indicate that maximum adhesion occurs below the isoelectric point (IEP) of the coal particles. While massive adhesion of Mycobacterium phlei is observed on coal, however, negligible amount of Mycobacterium phlei attaches to mineral pyrite and quartz.
