The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).

In open pit mine design, it is customary for geotechnical engineers to define the appropriate slope design angles within practical limits. The conventional approach to slope angle design is based on the comparison of calculated stability indicators, such as the factor of safety (FS) and the probability of failure (PF), with generic acceptability criteria not directly related to the impacts of failure. A major drawback of this type of approach is related to the difficulty of defining meaningful acceptability criteria. An alternative methodology of pit slope design is proposed, where the economic impacts of potential slope failures are calculated and used as the elements on which to apply the acceptability criteria for design. The methodology is based on the construction of a graph, referred to as a risk map, that relates the probability of exceeding the economic impact of slope failure to the magnitude of the impact measured in monetary terms. The process includes the analysis of a selected number of representative years of the mine plan and slope sections of the pit areas to define the required inputs for the construction of the risk map. The paper discusses the concepts used in interpreting the probability of slope failure, and describes the approach followed for the estimation of the economic impacts of slope failure and the construction of the risk map. Finally, the two main uses of the risk map are discussed, including the comparison with acceptability criteria for the evaluation of a specific open pit design and the comparative analysis of open pit design options in terms of value and risk to identify optimum pit layouts.

During the late 1990s Anglo American PLC was evaluating the Gamsberg zinc deposit in the Northern Cape Province. As the primary South African metallurgical technology provider, Mintek became involved in the evaluation of a pyrometallurgical process for the recovery of zinc from the Gamsberg deposit. eloping DC arc furnace technology for the metallurgical industry. This includes the patented Enviroplas® process for the treatment of zinc bearing waste materials. As a consequence Mintek has developed extensive expertise in the pyrometallurgical processing of zinc bearing materials. However, Mintek?s technologies stopped with the production of Prime Western Grade (PWG) zinc. Early on in the evaluation of the Gamsberg project, it became evident that the refining of PWG zinc would play an important part in the economic viability of the project. At the time the only pyrometallurgical technology available for the refining of PWG zinc to Special High Grade (SHG) zinc was the New Jersey process. This process represents 50-year-old technology and has not undergone significant refinement since the technology was developed. In order to provide a complete pyrometallurgical flow sheet for possible implementation at Gamsberg, Mintek assessed the New Jersey process with a view to either improving the technology or developing a new technology appropriate to the 21 century. In 1998 Mintek convened a consortium consisting of Mintek, the University of Cape Town, Eskom Enterprises, Bateman Metals and Anglo American PLC. The consortium successfully applied to the Innovation Fund for funding to develop a new process for the pyrometallurgical refining of PWG zinc to SHG zinc. The main aims of the project were to develop a new technology for pyrometallurgical zinc refining that conformed to the following: ?Decrease the production cost of SHG zinc metal to stimulate the development of the Gamsberg deposit. ?Be compatible with the current Enviroplas® process, preferably as an add-on to that process. ?Should use electrical energy to benefit from local price tariffs. The project commenced at the beginning of 2000 and consisted of three phases: ?an initial technology search and assessment of the fundamental aspects of zinc distillation. ?the design of a pilot plant for zinc refining. ?the manufacture, commissioning and operation of the pilot plant. A new technology based on a DC arc boiler feeding a packed distillation column was developed and during 2003 the project culminated in the successful operation of a 200 kg/h pilot plant. Ultimately, all of the aims of the project were met and the main outcome is that an advanced process for the pyrometallurgical refining of zinc (the Zincref process) has been developed. The main innovation of the technology was the switch from an energy transfer limited process to a mass transfer limited process (for which a patent has been registered).

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Chlorine-containing minerals are commonly present in coal. Associated minerals such as pyrite can undergo exothermic reactions. Consequently, it is of great significance to study the effect of inorganic chloride on the spontaneous combustion of coal. In this study, the effects of five inorganic chlorides (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride) on the spontaneous oxidation of coal were investigated. Analysis of the gaseous products of coal oxidization at low temperatures (323K to 453K) showed that the presence of inorganic chlorine in coal markedly decreases O2 consumption and the generation of CO and CO2. Samples of raw coal and chlorine-loaded coal were oxidized for 36 hours under the same experimental conditions. Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that inorganic chloride can inhibit the oxidative decomposition of some functional structure components (methyl, methylene, methine, and hydroxy) in the coal. The influence of inorganic chloride on the oxidation characteristics of the functional groups in coal during spontaneous combustion was investigated using benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylpropanol as model compounds, which were tested under the same experimental conditions as the coal samples. The oxygen consumption of model compounds with and without the addition of inorganic chloride further suggested that inorganic chloride may hinder the oxygenolysis of these structures during low-temperature oxidation. This phenomenon can be attributed to the radical reaction from the perspective of radical chemistry. It can therefore be concluded that inorganic chlorides play an inhibitory role in the spontaneous combustion of coal.

Particle morphology is a term that is used to describe the overall external shape and appearance of particulate solids. From the physical point of view, a precipitated solid is characterized primarily by the size and morphology of the particles (Sohnel andGarside, 1992). If the morphology of the crystal structures is to be related to the processing conditions, then the morphologies need to be quantified in some way. This can be achieved by using surface area measurements as well as fractal dimensions. The key idea is that rugged and indeterminate systems can be described by using a fractional number that describes the ruggedness of the system (Kaye, 1989). In other words, when the complexity of a structure, such as an agglomerate, increases with increasing magnification, it is useful to employ fractal dimensions to describe the structure. Fractal geometry proposes that, instead of attempting to measure the length of an irregular boundary, the rate at which the length of the boundary approaches infinity with increasing resolution should be calculated. Cross-sectional profiles of rugged particles can thus be quantified using the fractal dimension, and a measurement of the ruggedness of the morphology obtained. One of the additional uses of measuring the fractal dimension is that the measured value can be related to the physical properties and formation characteristics of the particle (Kaye and Trottier,1995). The morphology of nickel crystals was quantified with fractal dimension calculations of particle cross-sections. Particle cross-sections were obtained by mounting the particles in resin and polishing back. These were then photographed using Scanning Electron Microscopy and the resulting profiles analysed using the structured walk technique.

Technical publications in the field of mining and metallurgy have existed for a long time. Recent developments in electronic publishing on websites make it possible to disseminate information more widely and cost-effectively than before. Professional societies have an opportunity to serve their members and their industry by publishing high-quality peer-reviewed papers on their websites as well as in printed form. Older publications can be scanned, and optical character recognition used to provide searchable text. Various business models exist around this process. This paper outlines the approach used by the Southern African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) to provide free open access to their journal papers and conference proceedings, as well as the work being done by OneMine.org to collect technical papers from a number of international societies and make them available to subscribers via a large database. An approach is outlined that should be of benefit to authors, readers, and society at large.

Silicomanganese is widely used as a complex reducer and an alloying addition in the production of various grades of steel due to its economic and metallurgical advantages. It is also used as a semi-product in the manufacture of medium- and low-carbon ferromanganese and metallic manganese. Manganese-rich slag, resulting from high carbon ferromanganese production, has the advantages of high manganese content, high Mn/Fe ratio, low excess oxygen, low phosphorus content, low fine content and low cost. Such slag seems to be very attractive to use as raw materials for the production of silicomanganese alloys. In the present study, experimental heats were designed and carried out to optimise the factors affecting the production process of silicomanganese using manganese rich slag in the charge. The results of pilot plant experimental heats showed that the optimum metallic yield and recoveries of manganese and silicon are obtained with initial slag basicity,(CaO + MgO) / (Al2O3), equals 1.8 by using dolomite as fluxing material and charging quartzite and fluorspar in percentage of 25% and 4% of the blend, respectively. The results showed also that an amount of 30% of coke in excess of the stoichiometric amount should be added. These result are relative for the specific high Al2O3 ores used.

There are practical indications that flotation recovery of palladium bismuth tellurides is poor. This work tested whether this can be caused by a lack of interaction of the collector with the telluride. Impedance measurements, voltammetry and Raman spectroscopy were performed to determine the interaction of dithiocarbonate collectors (KEX) with Pd-Bi-Te. Impedance measurements showed lower capacitance values in solutions containing KEX indicating the formation of a continuous surface layer. Anodic and cathodic polarization diagrams show the mixed potential tobe higher than the reversible potential of the xanthate-dixanthogen equilibrium reaction; hence the formation of dixanthogen on the surface is possible. Electrochemically controlled in situ Raman spectroscopy did indicate the presence of bulk diethyl dixanthogen on the surface. Raman spectroscopy has confirmed the co-presence of xanthate with dixanthogen, indicating that xanthate retains its molecular integrity when it adsorbs on the surface of the Pd-Bi-Te. As a result, the mineral surface is expected to be hydrophobic and a lack of collector interaction with the mineral is not the reason for low PGM recoveries experienced. Laser surface alloying was used to develop copper and molybdenum aluminides by injecting premixed copper and molybdenum powder particles into a laser-generated melt pool on an aluminium substrate. Different laser processing parameters were used to produce the composite thin layers on the substrate material. The microstructure and phase constituents of the composite layer were studied by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. Experimental results show that the matrix structure of the metal matrix composite layer consists of ?-CuAl2and MoAl5. Surface hardness was increased by a factor of 3.

Discussion by P.J Lloydt Broekman and Penman describe (J.S. Afr. Inst. Min. Metal., vol. 91, Aug. 1991, p. 261) the addition of sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate to the flotation feed at Prieska. They note that for 'safety sake, lime was added to the rod mil to raise the pH to 9,5', and that 'personnel working in the vicinity of the rod mil were required to wear gas masks'. Author reply to P.J. Lloyd We thank Dr Lloyd for his interesting contribution. As he correctly points out, the Prieska float had run with cyanide solutions at pH values of 6,4. In fact, it ran safely for extended period with the pH slightly below 6.

Ferroalloy production is an energy-intensive industrial sector with significant CO2 emissions. In this paper the current situation in ferroalloy processes is discussed from the standpoint of global environmental issues, trends and development. Progress and data of ferroalloys production are frequently compared with the steel industry, which is a closely related sector and the main user of ferroalloys. Emission factors of processes and electricity production are examined as well as possibilities and future scenarios of how to diminish CO2 emissions. As a part of this study a questionnaire was submitted to experts in the field of ferroalloys worldwide to survey opinions on the ferroalloy industry today and in the near future (2020). Eighteen questions concerning raw materials, energy, environmental aspects, by-products and economic aspects were responded to by seventeen experts, the answers were analysed and conclusions were drawn. The safety of mining operations is significantly influenced by the in situ stress fields in which the mining excavations are created. From the point of view of planning of mining operations, the in situ stress field is a most important input parameter for valid modelling of excavations. Many in situ stress measurements have been carried out for mining and civil engineering projects in southern Africa over the past 30 to 40 years. A database of in situ stress measurement results and observations has been compiled. This paper presents results extracted from the database which are considered to be of particular interest to mining areas in South Africa. The database will permit the estimation of likely stress conditions in new areas of mining, provide a basis for evaluation of results from future in situ stress measurement programmes, provide a basis for comparison of observed behaviour with expected behaviour, and provide a source of data on which realistic design and layout analyses can be based. The information contained in the database indicates that horizontal to vertical stress ratios in the Carletonville, Klerksdorp and Rustenburg areas are significantly higher than the value of 0,5which is commonly used in mine layout planning.

This study investigates the use of dense convolutional neural networks to estimate bubble size distributions in flotation froths. 20 videographically captured images of froths from an industrial platinum flotation plant in South Africa were labelled semantically with an image annotation tool, LabelMe (https://github.com/wkentaro/labelme). As a result, pixels in the images could be categorized into three classes, namely ‘bubbles’ (class 0), ‘bubble boundaries’ (class 1) and ‘background’ (class 2). A U-net architecture with a ResNet34 backbone was trained to segment the images via classification of the pixels in the images. 5 of the 20 images were used to validate the performance of the neural network. Explicit inclusion of the bubble boundaries as a class proved to be significantly more effective than training the network with two classes only (i.e. bubbles and background). However, the thickness of the boundary layer regions were critical. If too thin, it was difficult to distinguish between some contiguous bubbles and if too thick, some fine bubbles may not be identified. The results were promising, although there is still significant scope for improvement, among other by making use of more images for training and validation. This study investigates the feasibility of using waste iron slag, the by-product from a mineral sands processing works, in road construction. The study includes the different options investigated for the treatment of a leachate that is produced during the cooling of the iron slag, prior to processing. It also reviews the reasons for choosing the current treatment option that is being trialed. Cooling the iron slag with water results in the formation of a leachate with a high pH and high sulphide concentration. This leachate can seep into the ground and, over time, it will contaminate the ground water. A system was designed to collect and treat the leachate to prevent contamination of surrounding natural water sources. Numerous leachate treatment options were investigated to find cost effective method of treatment After cooling, the iron slag is passed through an iron recovery plant and the unsaleable product is placed on a dumpsite. Rain percolates through the dumpsite, which can result in the formation of a leachate that can contribute to a contaminated plume. After extensive testwork, it was found that the dumpsite, which was leached of contaminants, could be screened and used as a G5material (specifications in Table II) in road construction. The initial challenge was to establish that this material was environmentally safe for use in this particular application. Approval from the Department of Water Affairs (DWAF) was required for the testwork and then for the long-term use of this material in the construction industry. The following challenge involved establishing a market for the material. Construction companies in the area were reluctant to change to a new product that was not naturally occurring. The economics of this project are extremely sensitive to transport costs and hence only projects within a specified radius can be supplied with the Black Top Gravel (BTG). This project is not are venue generator, but it does save the money that would be required to manage the dump, and it reduces the closure costs.

The storage capacity of any given tailings storage facility (TSF) is a function of the volume available for the tailings, for which the geometry of the final upper surface of the tailings is most important. One of the advantages that can be obtained from thickening tailings prior to discharge is that the tailings can be stacked at a steeper beach angle than is obtainable with conventional low-density slurries. However, there is at present no universally accepted method available for the accurate prediction of tailings beach slopes. This paper examines the current situation with the objective of putting the quest for a method for the accurate prediction of beach slopes into perspective. The paper references published reviews of the best-known beach slope prediction methods. However, there do not appear to be any independently verified projects or published references to projects on which a Class A prediction has been validated for any of these approaches, and in those instances where projects have been implemented correlation of actual with predicted slopes has been poor - often due to differences between the properties of the tailings assumed in the design and those actually achieved in the field. The author also concludes that flume-scale testing cannot be taken as a reliable indicator of full-scale performance, and suggests that the outcome of any current predictive method should be used by experienced practitioners as only one of a range of indicators in order to suggest a range of slope angles likely to result for any given operation. Practice has shown that it is possible to manipulate beach slopes by changes to the disposal technique, such as limiting the rate of discharge per discharge point and by increasing or decreasing yield stress, but the impact of these changes cannot readily be predicted. There are also newly emerging technologies, such as the injection of a polymer into the tailings at discharge, that will enhance the dewatering of tailings and hence expedite the consolidation of the tailings, that could well facilitate the development of steeper beach slopes. The overall conclusion is that with the current state of knowledge, the accurate prediction of beach slopes is not possible. Furthermore, in view of the inherent variability of the tailings parameters from any operation, it may well be of more value to concentrate on developing an understanding of the means by which the tailings parameters may be manipulated by the operators to achieve a given beach slope than to concentrate wholly on developing a generic beach slope prediction model.

The occurrence of fracturing due to high stress levels is a major factor in hangingwall stability in deep level gold mine stopes. However, rock falls cannot be the result of these fractures alone. Rock falls can result only from the occurrence of unstable rock blocks defined by the interaction of the stress induced fractures and naturally occurring geological planes of weakness. These planes include bedding planes and joint set planes. However, there is a general lack of information on the characteristics of these planes (orientations, spacings and lengths)?it does not appear that any such systematic and quantified information, if collected, has been published. To remedy this situation to some extent, joint mapping exercises have been carried out in several geological environments in two gold mines. The data collected on joint geometry included orientation, spacing and length, and this information is included in the paper. In addition, the paper describes the use of the data collected to evaluate the potential for rock falls and the probability of failure of stope support

This paper traces the rise of South Africa's mining industry in the context of the different state forms that oversaw its development. It commences with the mining-led industrial revolution through four periods of conflict, each of which contributed to a deepening of the industrial base, with constant battles between domestic and foreign capital and labour, and the rise of both Afrikaner and African nationalism. The role of state-owned enterprises has been crucial in shaping this dynamic so that at its peak the public sector and leading mining houses constituted two massive centres of power. This was followed by a thirty-year period of neo-liberal experimentation. The current debate on the 'developmental state' is an attempt to reconstruct the state as a counterweight to capital. It is argued that while the country has moved toward inclusive political and economic institutions, these are both limited by deep 'extractive' characteristics. This transformation failure provides a fertile ground for populism that presents one of the biggest threats to inclusive growth. Cited examples point to the many ways that states have sought to deal with the bonanza that conversion of mineral non-resources into resources brings. Such greenfield resources on state land, or in areas where the state holds monopoly rights, do not present ownership issues. It is suggested that this is the route that South Africa should follow, as the alternative will be conflictual.
