In the fourteen years that Rössing Uranium Limited has been in production, the metallurgical operations and controls on the leaching plant have evolved through four basic stages. Initially, the emphasis was placed on the achievement of consistent plant operation by overcoming severe startup difficulties. The second stage involved the attainment of the design operating targets, and also the commissioning of the ferric-leaching reactors in order to achieve a ferric ion concentration of more than 3,0 g/l. Improvements in control then became the priority, with the emphasis on consistently achieving the target concentrations of ferric ions, total iron, and terminal acidity. The latest phase has concentrated on the optimization of costs by means of adjustments to the historically established operating parameters in order to achieve large savings on consumables while maintaining the leaching efficiencies. Apart from the obvious incentive of reducing costs in an inflationary economy and a depressed uranium market, impetus for this work was given by a change in the type of ore from the open pit, which has the effect of reducing the extraction efficiency while increasing the consumption of consumable materials. These problems and their solutions are discussed in detail, and the importance to cost-effective optimization of an accurate, up-to-date cost-reporting structure is stressed.

The production of iron and steel generates various types of waste materials containing oxides, carbon, and flux material. Usually, these materials are land-filled at the plant site or are hauled away for disposal. Some of these waste materials are hazardous, and they must therefore be recycled or disposed of properly. The influence of different waste materials in iron-ore sinter blends on the quality and operational parameters in sinter production is described. The recycling of waste materials such as dolochar, scrap fines, mill scale, electric-arc furnace slag, basic-oxygen-furnace mud via the sintering process can achieve a saving in the cost of the raw materials (for example, fuels and flux) and a reduction in pollution. A comparison of a typical sinter with a sinter produced through the utilization of waste materials shows a distinct correlation between certain types of waste material and some metallurgical properties and operational parameters. Dolochar (and arc-furnace slag) in a sinter blend acts as part of the fuel and flux that are normally added to a sinter mix. In general, dolochar improves the quality of the sinter and decreases the consumption of coke. Other waste materials adversely influence the quality of the sinter, but not necessarily the operational parameters such as the production rate. At Vanderbijlpark, approximately 15 kt of various waste materials per month are successfully recycled in the sinter plant. Investigations into the handling and recycling of other waste materials may indicate that even more waste materials can be utilized.

This paper presents an integrated pipeline transport system for thickened coal sludge, which combines pretreatment and pipeline transport with combustion techniques of thickened coal sludge. The pipeline can transport thickened coal sludge with a sufficiently high solids content (about72%?77%) and high apparent viscosity (about 1 000Pa?S?3,000 Pa?S) directly by pipeline having neither use for water nor an addition agent. The transport distance can be as high as 1 000 metres. In particular, the operating principles, key equipment and technical parameters of this integrated system are examined in this paper. The integrated system effectively causes no pollution to the environment because it is completely sealed, and conserves energy over traditional conveyer designs. In his inaugural lecture (delivered in Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria on 16th February, 1995), Professor Dippenaar defends his doctrine, philosophy, objectives, and methodology, as was required of a newly appointed professor in the days of old. Briefly, he recounts the growth and achievements of the Department of Material Science and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Pretoria; he sketches its strategic guidelines and the obstacles encountered; he outlines the opportunities for the metallurgical industry in South Africa and the need for environmental control; and he describes how modeling techniques, together with expert systems, can aid both the industry and the community. He ends on an optimistic note, saying that his Department will continue to strive to transform adversities into opportunities, and to give its students a view of new horizons beyond the foundations laid by their teachers.

SYNOPSIS Many tabular mining problems can be modelled effectively by displacement-discontinuity techniques, which can be extended directly to represent fracturing on discrete planes and movements on planes of weakness. This paper presents a unified method for computing the energy changes that occur when multiple discontinuities intersect and are extended incrementally. It shows how this method can be used to deduce energy-release information for standard layout problems and, in addition, how the technique can be incorporated in numerical procedures based on the displacement-discontinuity method. Examples are given to demonstrate the effects of off-reef fracturing and the importance of stope-fault intersections during seismic events.

The Third International Conference on Coal Research was held in Sydney, Australia, in October 1976. The papers and proceedings of the Conference will be published in Australia on behalf of the International Committee for Coal Research in April 1977. The papers deal with the economics and practicability of coal conversion, coal winning, resources assessment, safety and dust, and coal and power generation, together with an appreciation of coal potential by the deputy chairman of the U.K. National Coal Board. Recent experiments and analyses have provided greater understanding of friction losses for the size distribution of the particles forming the slurry. Wilson and Sellgren (2001), Wilson et al. (2006) and Sellgren and Wilson(2006) have proposed a multi-component model consisting of carrier fluid and pseudo-homogeneous, heterogeneous and fully stratified solids. The technique presented here was found to estimate friction losses well when compared to reported experimental results with pipelines with diameters mainly from 0.2 to 0.5 m for various mixtures of fine sand to coarse gravel and products from mineral processing and phosphate mining.

In the past few years Orapa and Letlhakane Mines have investigated various new technologies to enhance and improve production. The goal has been to improve productivity, reduce operating costs and make the mines more profitable The advent of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in the early ’80s brought about the realization of this concept. Orapa and Letlhakane Mines started using GPS in 1999 and it is now used atLetlhakane mine for surveying, vehicle tracking and dispatching and for floor control system. Orapa Mine uses GPS in surveying, floor control and drill navigation. It will also be used for vehicle tracking and dispatching in mid-2001 following the installation of a fleet management and control system. The introduction of GPS at both Orapa and Letlhakane mines have improved productivity and reduced operating costs in the areas of drilling, topographic survey and floor control. In vehicle tracking and dispatching GPS has allowed for real-time information management for timeous decision-making which optimized fleet run time hours.

Centrifugal slurry pump station and deposition sites are a common feature of many mines and mineral processing plants. Yanacocha Mine has completed the design of a pump station consisting of two trains of four pumps each. A number of trade-off studies was conducted to optimize the pump station design. The most significant of these was determining the drive types for the slurry pumps. The pump station duty can vary considerably due to the number of deposition points round the disposal site. The standard solution to this problem on a multi-stage pump train is to install one pump with a variable speed drive to control the pump station output by varying the speed of this pump and stopping and starting other stages. However, there are a number of negative impacts associated with this approach. These include head losses through pumps that are stationary or ?wind-milling?, different wear life on pumps that are running and pumps that are stationary, and slower response to the control system with the possibility of hunting. The use of variable speed drives on all the pumps was considered as an alternative to the standard solution. The factors considered in comparing these options were the control and operational differences, the pump efficiencies and absorbed power, the expected pump wear life, the impact on pump maintenance and the cost of the drive options. For this project the option of using all variable speed drives was selected. The paper presents the following aspects of the study: ?Description of the various options investigated. This includes a discussion on the required duty and the drive options. ?Technical comparison between the options. ?Description of the factors influencing pump performance and life.

Modern soil mechanics is generally considered to have begun in 1925, when Karl Terzaghi published his book Erdbaumechanik auf bodenphysikalischer Grundlage (Earthwork Mechanics based on the Physics of Soils). These theories were applied to rocks more than 20 years later and the science of rock mechanics became established. Methods of analysis and design have been introduced and applied, and have evolved over time. More recently, the rapid growth in computing power has resulted in more sophisticated analyses, and together with improved monitoring techniques, our understanding of geomechanics has grown considerably. Despite this, geotechnical failures with major consequences still do occur. This is partly due to failure to transfer and apply the knowledge that has been gained, but also there are aspects of geomechanics that are not well understood.

Because composites offer new solutions to materials problems, they are currently the focus of intense research and development worldwide. However, the natural tendency of users is to remain with tried materials in every situation of material selection. This approach ignores the tremendous advances that have been made in composite materials and their application. These advances enable engineers to tailor composites to suit specific applications such as the demanding needs of mining and industry in South Africa. However, the application of composites, where new and improved components and products are needed or are being developed is often hampered by the limited knowledge and experience of the engineers concerned. This paper presents some of the basic information needed for an appreciation of the terminology, definitions, and properties of various types of composites. It also reviews recent developments in manufacturing technology and product development that may find application in local industries and mining.

Growing use of deionised water in surface coating techniques by w. F. LORCH Production engineers in the metal plating, paint, plastics-coating and printed circuit industries are increasingly aware of the cost of sub-standard or blemished items which have been poorly processed. An area where quality control can quickly produce higher efficiencies is in the choice of suitably purified water for making up solutions, for rinse baths and 'drag-out' baths, for cleansing lines and electrophoresis tasks, for maintaining electrolyte density and hence consistency, and for facilitating the recovery of valuable minerals. The author of this article examines the general problems of using nonpurified water, and shows how purified water has become accepted by the principal surface coating industries to improve processes and effect economies.

Coalbrook Collieries has produced approximately 2 million tons of coal by retreat longwalling since April 1976. Strata control. support. stone intrusions. coal conveyance, and the inflow of goaf and water between the face supports have been the major operational problems experienced to date. The progressive percentage availability of the total system (moves between panels excluded) for the first three panels mined was 40 per cent. Satisfactory solutions have been evolved for these problems. and the availability in the present panel (fourth panel) has increased to approximately 60 per cent. It is envisaged that longwalling will become the most economical method of ensuring optimum heat values, greater recovery. and reduced geographic expansion. as well as safer roof conditions. at Coal brook.
