It is shown that the profiles of beaches of hydraulic-fill tailings dams can be predicted with good accuracy the use of small-scale laboratory deposition tests on materials from a prototype tailings dam. Although the slope of a tailings beach at any point is related to the shear strength of the settled slurry, are severe practical difficulties in the prediction of beach profiles from shear strengths measured in the laboratory. The hydraulic sorting of particle sizes that occurs on a tailings beach results in a gradient of permeability the beach, and this gradient has the significant effect of lowering the phreatic surface in the tailings dam.

INTRODUCTION Some years ago the authors proposed a modified procedure1 for carrying out micum index determinations2. The modifications consisted of using a drum of 50 cm internal length, i.e. half the length of the standard micum drum (a modification also adopted by the B.S.J.3), and the use of a + 25 mm coke instead of + 60 mm coke for the test. The proposed modified test and formulae for converting results obtained from it to standard micum test results and vice versa were based on the results obtained during the investigation of about 200 test cokes made in ovens of the South African Steel Industrial Corporation Limited (Iscor), the Fuel Research Institute co-operating with the experiments. Extensive testing of cokes has since been done at the Fuel Research Institute using both the standard and the modified procedures. The numerous test results obtained during this trial period fully support and strengthen the confidence originally expressed by the authors in the modified testing procedure. The scope of the modified micum index determination has in the meantime been extended by applying the testing procedure also to test cokes made in the Institute's experimental coke ovens, and also in this case the modified procedure has proved its usefulness. A difficulty is that when comparing the characteristics of cokes made in the Institute's two experimental coke ovens with each other and with those of cokes made from similar blends in commercial coke ovens, for example those of Iscor, the index values obtained invariably do not check exactly due mainly to inherent differences between the different types of oven4. For instance, resistance to abrasion of a coke made in Iscor's ovens is always appreciably higher than that of a coke made from the same blend (and having a similar moisture content) in the experimental ovens. This makes direct comparisons and the prediction of quality to be expected from commercial products, based on experimental coke oven results, difficult. It may also be added that workers in Great Britain some years ago reported a similar experience5. In the authors' opinion the main reason for the discrepancy is the relatively low height of the experimental ovens resulting in a much lower static pressure on the charge during coking than that obtaining in a commercial oven. The difficulty was pointed out and briefly discussed in a publication4 which appeared at a time when the micum test for coke evaluation had only just been introduced at the Institute, so that only B.S. shatter and abrasion test results were available for discussion in the publication. Needless to say, the introduction of the micum test by no means solved nor even alleviated the problem. On numerous occasions during the past few years the Institute has had to conduct contract investigations in its experimental coke ovens on behalf of companies which invariably desired an indication of the quality of coke likely to be obtained from certain coals or blends when coked commercially, more particularly in Iscor's type of coke ovens. It was, therefore, essential to accumulate statistical data which would enabe the prediction to be readily made. Fortunately the compilation of comparative coke-quality index values for the three types of oven under consideration has become possible as a result of coking investigations conducted in co-operation with Iscor over a number of years. During this period Iscor, on numerous occasions, kindly made available to the Institute portions of coals and blends coked in the Corporation's coke ovens, thus enabling parallel coking tests to be carried out in the Institute's experimental ovens. In this way enough statistical data became available to establish relationships between coking results obtained in Iscor's ovens and results obtained on similar coal charges in the Institute's ovens. The most practical and acceptable method of overcoming the problems of finding a suitable and simple basis enabling direct comparison between the cokes of the different origins mentioned to be made, is the assignment of descriptive arbitrary quality ratings, as indicated below, to the cokes obtained, it being argued that the quality rating assigned to coke made from a given coal or blend in the different coke ovens under standardized conditions should be the same, irrespective of differences in the index values obtained when subjecting the cokes to the usual coke evaluation tests. The system, which should enable the sponsors of coking investigations in the Institute's experimental ovens to make their own interpretations of the results obtained, is explained below. ARBITRARY QUALITY CLASSIFICATION OF COKES The Ml0m index1 (percentage material smaller than 10 mm after the test) of a blast furnace coke is a measure of its tendency towards breeze formation during handling -a low value indicating a low tendency. This is generally of greater importance under ruling South African conditions, than the M'40 index1 (percentage material larger than 40 mm after the test), which can be regarded as a measure of resistance to shatter. In fact, if the M10m value of a coke as made in Iscor's ovens is higher than about 11, the tendency of the coke to form breeze during handling and in the blast furnace is relatively so high that hardly any notice need be taken of its M'40 value, even if this is comparatively high. The selection of the most suitable mechanized mining strategy has to consider the geotechnical environment in which it will be operating. A mechanized mining method or machine is designed to a given set of specifications to work within an environment. The geological conditions that define this environment are fixed—detailed information of these conditions for design specifications is thus critical. Two major classes of geotechnical parameters are defined—critical and design. The critical controlling factors are a result of mineral composition, size, shape, abundance, assemblage and associated texture, as well as discontinuity type and orientation. Design parameters are specific to each deposit, and their nature cannot be broadly described, as with the critical factors. It is shown that for major deposits in South Africa, namely the Witwatersrand Basin (gold), the Bushveld Igneous Complex (PGEs) and the Karoo Coalfields that by incorporating geological and geotechnical information that appropriate mechanized mining methods can be deduced, and that the performance and design parameters of specific technologies can be determined

For many of us, formal academic education slows abruptly when we leave a tertiary institute of learning. We start applying and connecting newly acquired knowledge with the practicalities of a career, and begin to think in a manner that is technology-oriented. Subsequent vocational advancement is offered by the .many mining and professional journals that circulate through departments, and by conferences and schools that are organized in-house and via the SAIMM and other professional institutions. The importance of these schools cannot be overstated: they combine people and developing technology to the benefit of the industry as a whole.

This paper was presented at the Coloquium on Management Techniques in the Mining and Metallurgical Industry, which was organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and held in Pretoria during June 1988. The author asks whether technical audits are of any use to management. Technical auditing he defines as an evaluation undertaken by an outsider of whether a technical activity is being carried out correctly. After examining the types of technical auditing, and its prerequisites and procedures, he describes its application in regard to quality, and to production processes and their adequacy. He then answers his question by saying that, not only are technical audits very useful, but they form an essential element in the provision of quality products. In addition, they give management the opportunity of testing whether the activities of the organization are being conducted correctly. This is their most important function in that they alert management to areas of potential growth, modernization, and innovation. However, the use to which technical auditing is put remains the key to its value; that is, its value depends on the positive action that each manager takes as the result of a technical audit.

They are the particle-size grading for maximum density, the water content for pumpability, settlement after placing, compression and drainage under stress, shear strength, and resistance to shock loading.

Kovohute Pribram is a plant recycling lead wastes, lead acid batteries in particular. Relevant new recycling technologies are being gradually developed. Outdated technology of smelting lead plates has been replaced by a new technology based on processing of entire batteries in a blast furnace according to the process developed by know-how of German Varta company. The classical Harris refining has been substituted by the oxygen refining. New technologies aimed at utilization of related wastes arising from refining lead bullion in Kovohute Pribram are being developed in house. At present, a new technology of utilization of spent battery acid for extracting zinc from various wastes has been developed. Zinc oxide dross from alkaline refining of lead bullion, during which residual zinc from the preceding vacuum de-zincing is removed as well as waste zinc galvanic sludges (a product of neutralizing precipitation of metals from industrial wastewaters with lime) were treated. In this study, the new developed technology yielding basic zinc carbonate - a valuable raw material for zinc electrowinning, is described together with the first experience of applying the developed method to processing zinc wastes on a pilot scale. Most of the equipment used in the past to regenerate alkali solutions originating from Harris refinery was utilized in the practical realization of this new technology.

This paper considers the probability of the occurrence of potential rockfals in deep-level gold mines where there is point support (props, pipesticks, and timber sticks). The investigation described gave rise to the following implications: natural joints subparalel to the direction of strike have a controlling influence on the potential occurrence of rockfals; with discrete types of support such as props at typical sparings, there is a significant probability of the occurence of potential rockfals; the use of headboards oriented in the direction of strike reduces the probability; and loss of support from a prop increases the probability.

Mine management by objectives By A. A. HAZELL The author discusses the objective areas of mine management. Setting objectives is seen to be a conscious process which starts at the highest level of management. This enables clear objectives to be set at each lower management level. The methods of setting objectives in the areas of stope production, productivity and manager performance are set out in detail. In the area of manager performance emphasis must be placed on the practice of management. It is concluded from results obtained that "management by objectives" produces better than average perormances.

(Visitor) The significance of ;n situ tests on large coal specimens is briefly reviewed. Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.

The relationships between coal properties, the strength of coke, and the performance of a blast furnace were investigated by means of correlation studies, and a linear programming model was developed for the prediction of a coal blend based on these relationships. The unique feature of this approach is that it utilizes a knowledge of the minimum blast-furnace coke requirements, rather than the maximum attainable coke quality. The model predicts the least expensive coal blend that would still comply with the minimum coke-quality requirements of blast furnace. The study also confirms the existence of a relationship between the rank and caking parameters of coal, and the hot strength of coke. The effect of coke-oven operating parameters on coke quality is also discussed.

In the process described, hydrogen is used to generate high-temperature steam and oxygen in the molten bath. Steel is decarburized to low levels to produce a pearlite-free steel suitable for deep drawing. The process makes use of the favourable thermodynamics in the reactions between steam, carbon, and iron, as well as providing high-temperature oxygen for the decarburizing reaction. The process can easily be incorporated in existing BOF (basic oxygen furnace) plant but can also be contemplated as a greenfield process.

Blasting in a gold mine has to satisfy the following set of techno economic conditions: good fragmentation, minimum stopped width, minimum number of rock falls, cost effectiveness. Results of a comparative study of the performance of a Low Density Anfo (LDA) and a conventional Anfo (ANFEX) are discussed. LDA appears to be more cost effective. The same borehole volume can be charged with material of reduced specific gravity. The velocity of detonation (VOD) is increased in the case of LDA resulting in more breakage as a result of shock energy than from the energy in the gas phase. This leads to less damage to the excavation and more favourable breakage of the excavated rock. As a result the overall economics of the mining operation is improved.

In this publication he identified the need for a basic, simple book on miningpractice to provide new students of mining with a backgroundto their studies. He also designed the book to providea background to persons operating on the fringesof the industry such as students of economics and journalists.The text extends to only some 120 pages, and containsa sufficient number of monochrome sketches, diagrams,and photographs. It is written in a straight-forward, easyto-read style. The book contains an index and elementarytable of conversion from imperial to SI (metric) units,and there is also a glossary of mining terms that mostreaders would find useful.The author has succeeded in keeping the contentssimple, as indicated by the title. However, after each chapter, there are references to further recommendedreading. The book could be useful in the South African context, although the coverage of coal and opencast mining operations is slender.

The possibility that type 430 stainless steel can become sensitized during annealing after hot-rolling was studied by simulated cycles of continuous-annealing heat treatments, and by calculation of the carbon solubility. It was found that the lower-carbon steel could be sensitized at lower annealing temperatures than the higher-carbon steel, which is in line with plant experience. The difference in sensitization behaviour is ascribed to the lower rate of recovery of the lower-carbon steel during cooling, since recovery is sensitive to the grain size. At practical heat-treatment temperatures, austenite formation does not play a role.

The extent of ground movements and stress concentrations in the vicinity of the reef in the deep mine-shafts used in the South 4frican gold-mining industry have led to the requirement that special tower structures be developed to span the reef intersection zone in several new shafts. So that structural engineers are able to design these towers, it is necessary to model the dynamic behavior of conveyances traversing them in some way, to provide a means to determine the magnitude of the forces generated. This paper describes the development of two such procedures. The first is a numerical method, utilizing a step by- step integration technique to track the motion of a conveyance through a tower. This technique has been implemented in a computer program, and some results are given.

A system of artificial support for shallow mines is described, analysed, and evaluated. The system can be designed rationally to support a predetermined overburden load, and tests have shown that the design theory gives accurate predictions of strength. The support system, consisting as it does of two basic materials, reinforced granular material and reinforced cemented material, is flexible and can be varied to suit changing requirements of height and load. The system of preloading to the design load by jacking off the roof ensures that the walls are both stiff and prooftested.

New trends and developments in the production of ferro-silicon, ferro-manganese and ferro-chrome alloys are discussed, with emphasis on the general trend to the adoption of large production units. Problems which arise, both of a metallurgical and an electrical nature, due to the use of large electric furnaces, are outlined with specific reference to the limitations imposed by the power carrying capacity of Soderberg electrodes, the furnace resistance and the furnace reactance. The implications of combining high resistance within the furnace with good metallurgical operating conditions are illustrated by considering the production of ferro-silicon and ferro-manganese. The possibility of replacing electric furnaces used for ferro-manganese production, by large low shaft blast furnaces using oxygen enriched blast, is mentioned. The continued use of small electric arc furnaces for ferro-chrome production is also mentioned, and is ascribed to lack of ore suitable for treatment in large furnaces. Agglomeration of chromite ores appears to be a possible answer to this problem.
