This paper describes an interactive personal computer program, ENVIRON, which simulates cooling and ventilating systems on gold mines. An example of the practical application of the program is given and proposed future developments are discussed. The program consists of two main modules, HEATFLOW and VENT- FLOW. HEATFLOW calculates the heat loads and the effect of air coolers, while VENTFLOW estimates the air flow distribution. As the calculation of the heat loads requires a knowledge of the air flow and vice versa, the two modules are run iteratively until the solution converges. The program is written in Pascal and runs on any IBM-compatible personal computer.

In the last decades, the exponential increase in the cells’ volume resulted in significant advantages such as investment costs, footprint and energy savings. However, in larger size cells, despite the increased diameter/height ratio, new constraints arose related to the need for decreasing the larger froth transport distances to enhance the froth recovery. Thus, the use of froth crowders and internal launders became compulsory to maintain the froth transport distances but decreasing the ratio between gas and collected mineral flowrates. Consequently, the bubble load will increase until reaching a critical bubble surface coverage. In this paper, the concentrate carrying capacity (tph/m2) is described in terms of the bubble surface coverage (bubble loading) at the pulp-froth interface and the froth recovery (froth transport) and is evaluated as a function of the cells’ volume and operating variables. A sensitivity analysis, based on industrial operating and design conditions, such as superficial gas rate, particles size, froth crosssectional area and cells’ volume, was developed for evaluating the metallurgical performance of cells from 100 to 630 m3. Results show that limiting carrying capacity can arise for the whole range of cells’ volume, depending on critical operating conditions, particularly in first rougher cells and cleaning stages of industrial flotation circuits. The increase in cells’ volume consistently increases the bubble loading (bubble surface coverage) under all conditions, approaching the limiting conditions more rapidly in the case of cells without internal launders. Otherwise, the limiting condition was achieved when the particle size DPS decreased from 50 to 20 (μm) and for superficial gas rates significantly less or larger than 1 (cm/s). The use of internal launders allows for increasing the range of the operating conditions needed to reach a certain carrying capacity. The purpose of this article is to show how a representative overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) measurement can be calculated for an underground coal mining bord and pillar batch process. The calculation method, the typical losses (which include planned and unplanned availability losses, coal quality losses, and process rate losses) and the underlying logic are presented and discussed. It is argued that the current traditional underground bord and pillar mining process can currently provide a maximum theoretical OEE of only 49 per cent, while a realistic benchmark target should be in the order of 37 per cent, which relates to an average of 2400 t per shift or 1.2 Mt/a. In addition, it is argued that the current bord and pillar process is the current bottleneck to further improvement past the 2400 t per shift benchmark, and that fundamental process changes will be required to eliminate this bottleneck.

This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

"The static recrystallization behaviour of Ti-Nb microalloyed high-strength steel during hot deformation was studied by conducting double-hit hot compression experiments using a Gleeble-3500 thermomechanical simulator. The effects of deformation temperature, strain rate, strain, and initial austenite grain size on the static recrystallization fraction are discussed. The static recrystallization kinetics were modelled, and the results show that the static recrystallization fraction increased with deformation temperature, strain rate, and strain and interpass time. The static recrystallization activation energy Qs was 326.05 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the experimental results and predicted results indicates that the effects of deformation parameters on the static recrystallization in multistage hot deformation are significant. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental results. IntroductionIn hot-forming processes, complex microstructures are often induced by multiple hot deformation mechanisms (Zhang et al., 2014; Liang et al., 2015). The softening behaviour during hot processing has generated considerable interest because component properties are influenced significantly by the corresponding microstructural evolution (Wu et al., 2010). It is well known that dynamic recrystallization (DRX); metadynamic recrystallization (MDRX), which occurs by the growth of DRX nuclei during intervals of deformation; and static recrystallization (SRX), which occurs by nucleation and growth during the intervals of deformation, can significantly alter the austenite grain size (Chen et al., 2015. Chen, Sui, and Cui, 2014; Mao et al., 2014). The long interpass times allow complete SRX to take place if the steel is being rolled above the interpass recrystallization stop temperature (Tnr), i.e. in the absence of carbonitride precipitation (Siciliano, 2000). In recent research, microalloying technology coupled with new-generation thermomechanical control processing (NG-TMCP) has proved efficient in achieving the proper balance between strength, toughness, ductility, and formability by means of a suitable combination of chemical composition and thermomechanical treatment parameters (Shukla et al., 2012; Bandyopadhyay et al., 2011). The alloying elements Nb, V, Ti are widely used in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steel to achieve the desired strength and toughness properties with solid-solution strengthening, precipitation hardening, grain refinement, and dislocation strengthening (Opiela, 2014; Chen and Yu, 2012). The wide applicability of alloying elements in HSLA steel is due to the fact that heat treatments are not required after forming of the parts, which results in time and cost savings."

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

Gold extraction from double refractory ores using conventional cyanidation has proved challenging due to the presence of carbon within the ore. Carbon particles may adsorb leached gold resulting in gold losses to tailings, i.e. preg-robbing the gold. Some of the preg-robbed gold may be recovered by the application of the HiTeCC process on CIL tailings. The process developed by Metso Outotec involves caustic conditioning of the tailings followed by high temperature desorption and simultaneous adsorption onto virgin activated carbon of the aurodicyanide. The aim of this paper was to develop a model for the HiTeCC process which could be used to support design and optimisation of the process, based on the adsorption characteristics of the preg-robbing and activated carbons. It was found that accurate experimental isotherms can be used to predict the behaviour of preg-robbing adsorbents. Comparing the sorption isotherms for preg-robbing ores and activated carbon indicated similar dependencies on temperature and ionic composition. Applying boundary layer diffusion models coupled with experimentally determined isotherms for preg-robbing ore and activated carbon, the HiTeCC process was successfully simulated at experimental and plant scale. Gold recovery of the HiTeCC process is most sensitive to the temperature of desorption and gold loading of the activated carbon, with increased temperature improving recovery. The gold loading of the activated carbon in the process should always be maintained lower than that of the normalised pregrobbing carbon gold loading to ensure favourable conditions for adsorption onto the activated carbon. Caustic conditioning stabilises adsorption and is therefore not necessary during the desorption stages of the process, but potentially improves recovery during adsorption. This paper is the first in a series of three dealing with this subject and also with the rate of oxygen removal from the slags in the presence of solid carbon and with the physicochemical properties of the reduced slags. For selected members of the system, the melting temperatures and primary crystallization products were determined. as were the viscosity and the electrical resistivity of the corresponding melts. All the experiments were conducted in a neutral atmosphere. Where determined, the primary phase was found to be either perovskite or magnesium aluminium titanate. The composition variable exerting the most pronounced influence on viscosity or resistivity was found to be the basicity expressed as the mass ratio (CaO + MgO)jSiO,. The ratio CaOjMgO became important only at Iow basi<:ity values. Although generally there is a direct proportionality between log (viscosity) and log (resistivity), slags h&apos;lving either a very high silica content or a very high titania content have anomalously Iow electrical resistance.

"Rockbursts continue to be a major contributor to mine accidents and cause of damage to mine excavations, particularly at great depth. The problem of rockbursts has also escalated in civil engineering tunnels driven at depth, due to high levels of in situ stress at such depths. Attempts have been made in the past to mitigate the impact of rockbursts, with rock support remaining the ultimate method for providing stability in rockbursting environments. However, records show that, on many occasions, conventional support elements such as rockbolts, wire mesh, shotcrete, and lacing fail to withstand severe rockburst events.Recently, a support method termed ‘sacrificial’ support was proposed as a potential additional method to prevent rockburst damage, based on observations made after rockburst events in a mine. The philosophy behind a sacrificial support system is that, under dynamic loading conditions, support in the form of a liner must fail; leaving behind, undamaged, what was previously supported rock mass. The sacrificial support concept reported herein is applicable in situations where the source (i.e. seismic event) of the rockburst is located remote from where rockburst damage is likely to occur.Spalling tests based on the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) technique were conducted to study some aspects of dynamic rock fracturing in tension at high strain rates and the role a sacrificial layer plays in combating dynamic rock failure. A single Hopkinson pressure bar, with a long cylindrical intact rock specimen attached at the bar free end, was impacted by a striker on the opposite free end in order to generate a dynamic stress pulse responsible for spall failure upon reflection from the specimen free end. Different liners and liner combinations were then introduced at the specimen free end as support. Such a simple, yet robust, experimental set-up allowed the potential benefits and failure mechanisms associated with sacrificial support under dynamic loading to be demonstrated and compared with ‘sacrificial support’ behaviour observed in real rockburst events in a mine. Analysis of the results revealed that varying liner thickness and mechanical impedance between rock and support liner play a significant role in limiting rockburst damage."

Yeast-derived bola-amphiphiles have attracted considerable attention for their applications in various industrial sectors in recent years. However, only a few studies on this class of surfactant were reported to be relevant to mineral processing applications. In this paper, one of the novel surfactants, acidic glucolipid obtained from Candida bombicola sophorolipids and modified by using Penicillium decumbens naringinase substrate has been evaluated for its interaction with chalcocite and calcite minerals because of a new Cu-ore Nussir deposit in Norway containing calcite impurity. The interaction of glucolipid biosurfactant with copper sulphide and carbonate minerals was investigated with zeta potential, adsorption and FTIR studies, and also by Hallimond tube and bench scale flotation tests using pure minerals and Nussir copper ore, respectively. The results illustrate collector adsorption and flotation of copper sulfides at neutral pH. The bench-scale flotation results demonstrate that copper sulphides can be selectively floated from carbonate and silicate gangue minerals. "To be able to responsibly develop a multiphysics model of the steel belt sintering (SBS) process used to sinter chromite fines, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the process. This understanding was gained through a site visit, observation of the process in operation, and interaction with the operators. Material characterization will also reveal much about the process that is not yet fully understood. A well-defined and representative mass and energy balance will also give valuable insight into the process. The plan for the multiphysics model aims to combine a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model with a discrete element method (DEM) model.To obtain a more accurate mass and energy balance representation of the SBS process, it was decided to develop a dynamic distributed parameter model of the mass and energy balance. This model will be used to gain better understanding of the SBS process so that a more complicated multiphysics model can be developed later. The reason for this is because the SBS process is very dynamic, with a large temperature distribution throughout the length of the process. In its current state, the mass and energy balance model is capable of handling solid and gas material packages and exchanging heat between these packages where they are mixed, and is able to model the heating of the gas by burning CO gas. The next step in the development of the model will involve enabling it to handle evaporatoin of liquid water, burning of solid carbon in the pellets, reduction of iron oxide in the pellets with the CO gas formed from carbon combustion, and then oxidation of the reduced iron in the oxygen-rich cooling zones."

"In previous work by the authors, it was established that additions of 0.2 at.% Ru to an Fe-40 at.% Al alloy improved the corrosion and oxidation resistance of the alloy. The alloy was produced by mechanical alloying and spark plasma sintering and the work showed that nonequilibrium processing was able to significantly refine the grain size of the material. The sintered material had a higher hardness than the as-cast material and the change in grain size did not significantly affect the oxidation and corrosion. In the present research, the mechanically alloyed powder was coated onto a mild steel substrate using cold-spray coating at a gas pressure of 10 bar and a temperature of 500°C. The coatings were found to be 5–10 um thick, although thicknesses of up to 30 um were observed. The coated materials were subjected to oxidation and corrosion tests to determine the effectiveness of the coating in increasing the oxidation and corrosion resistance of mild steel. This was done to determine the effectiveness of cold-spray coating as a technique to coat these mechanically alloyed powders. IntroductionPrevious work conducted by Mintek (Couperthwaite et al., 2013, 2015) investigated the effect of precious metal additions on the structure, oxidation and corrosion properties of an Fe-40 at.% Al (Fe- Al) alloy. Initial work determined that additions of more than 0.5 at.% precious metal did not improve the oxidation and corrosion properties of the materials and in some cases even decreased the resistance to corrosion. Further work identified Pt and Ru as beneficial additions to the FeAl alloy. Four alloys were then produced by mechanical alloying and sintering (FeAl–0.2 at.% Pd, FeAl–0.2 at.% Ru, FeAl–0.5 at.% Ag, FeAl–0.5 at.% Pt). These alloys were all successfully produced by melting and casting and mechanical alloying sintering and it was found that the nonequilibrium processing greatly decreased the grain size of the materials compared to the ascast materials. It was found that the additions of Ru and Pt were still the most beneficial to the oxidation and corrosion properties, with Ru being considered the most beneficial."

The successful commissioning of the Cerro Verde project in Peru at the end of 2006 marked the culmination of the efforts of many in the industry over many years to have high pressure grinding roll technology recognized and accepted as a legitimate alternative to the conventional approach to large-scale hard rock comminution circuit design. Other hard-rock projects that have recently adopted HPGR include Freeport (Indonesia), Boddington (Australia) and Amplats Potgietersrus (South Africa). With the increasing acceptance of this technology, the need for technical presentations and articles exhorting the industry to adapt has diminished somewhat, and it is considered appropriate now to shift the emphasis to the provision of information for those considering embracing change. This article endeavours to answer frequently asked questions on the subject of high pressure grinding roll technology, with particular reference to its application in the hard rock minerals processing sector.

ABSTRACT The recently introduced concept of negative taxation complicates estimation of the distributable profit of certain South African gold mines, and an assisted mine could operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. A simple diagram is presented from which the approximate working profit or loss, taxation payable or tax credit received, and the distributable profit of an assisted mine can be estimated directly for any combination of the four main variable operational factors: tonnage milled, recovery grade, unit cost and capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION The effects on the working profits of South African Gold mines caused by changes in unit working costs, recovery grade, tonnage milled and capital expenditure are readily estimated. For normal tax- and lease-paying mines the distributable profit is related to the working profit and the latter is a commonly accepted comparative measure of the profitability of an operation. However, the recently introduced concept of State assistance in the form of negative taxation1, i.e. a tax credit, for mines with a life of less than eight years complicates such estimates. A requirement of State assistance is that an assisted mine must lower its normal pay limit by 16 to 20 per cent, and it will be possible for a mine to operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. In the case of an assisted mine it is therefore necessary for management to judge the effects of changes in unit costs, grade, etc., in terms of distributable profit instead of working profit. This will require repeated calculation of tax to be paid or tax credits that will be received under the numerous possible combinations of the four main variable factors. However, with the aid of the diagram illustrated in Fig. 1, it is possible to assess at a glance the practical effect of these variables on the distributable profit of an operation not subject to tax on the normal formula, or small mine formula, with sufficient accuracy to decide whether a detailed analysis is required. USE OF THE DIAGRAM From the central point &apos;X&apos; in Fig. 1, a range of tonnages milled per annum has been plotted along the north-bearing axis, a series of costs per ton milled in the northwestern quadrant, recovery grades in the northeastern quadrant, and capital expenditures in the southwestern quadrant. Starting from the tonnage milled per annum, a line is drawn east and west across the two northern quadrants up to the points where it reaches the desired cost- and grade-lines. From these points two north-south lines are drawn into the southern quadrants. A further line is drawn to the east from the point where the western north-south line crosses the desired capital expenditure. In recent years, rapid depletion of the higher grade reserves, allied to decreases in paylimits, has led to the exploitation of secondary, erratically mineralized placer horizons on various marginal and low grade gold mines. On Blyvooruitzicht Mine, the rich Carbon Leader Reef has limited reserves, necessitating exploration of the lower grade Middelvlei Reef. This placer has always presented evaluation and exploration problems, to such an extent that it was, at one stage, considered uneconomic. Despite an extensive underground drilling programme no ore reserve targets of reasonable size were apparent. However, when a certain degree of parallelism between sedimentological trends in the Middelvlei Reef and the underlying Carbon Leader was recognized, a meaningful exploration model could be developed. Firstly, all historical sampling records for the Carbon Leader were entered into a computerized system; the database comprised in excess of 340 000 data points. Variables captured consisted of gold value, uranium value, con- glomerate thickness and total reef thickness. The raw data were then averaged into blocks, and plots of different variables were computer-generated for further analysis. This enabled the Carbon Leader to be modelled sedimentologically and, thereby, exploration targets for the Middelvlei Reef were generated, based on the Carbon Leader facies trends. Geostatistical analysis of sampling data in exposed areas of the Middelvlei Reef underground has confirmed the sedimentological breakdown of the placer into distinct facies areas. A facies model relating value distribution patterns to depositional trends, both for the Carbon Leader and the Middelvlei Reef, has thus been incorporated into a mine planning strategy.

A theoretical comparison is made between point-attack and wedge-shaped picks in regard to their cutting efficiencies in coals having different strength characteristics. With specific energy as a criterion of cutting efficiency, it is shown that a mathematical expression can be derived for the assessment of the relative performances of these two groups of picks as a function of coal-strength parameters and pick-tip angle. The ratio of tensile to compressive strength of coal is found to play a significant role in the determination of relative cutting efficiencies, lower ratios favouring the use of point-attack picks.

SYNOPSIS This paper demonstrates that the horizontal stresses induced by the creation of a tabular scope in a single mining step are always tensile at the centre of the stope span, but that compressive stresses are actively generated in hangingwalls and footwalls during sequential mining. A stress-distribution mechanism is introduced, and is used to explain the results for elastic behaviour, and for inelastic behaviour both during a single mining step and during multiple mining steps.

"SynopsisThe availability of advanced characterization techniques is integral to the development of advanced materials, not only during development phases, but in the manufactured components as well. At Necsa, two modern neutron diffractometers equipped with in-situ sample environments, as well as complementary X-ray diffraction instruments, are now available as User Facilities within the National System of Innovation in support of the South African research and industrial communities. Neutrons and X-rays, owing to their different interaction mechanisms with matter, offer complementary techniques for probing crystalline materials. Both techniques enable nondestructive investigation of phenomena such as chemical phase composition, residual stress, and texture (preferred crystallite orientation). More specifically, the superior penetration capabilities of thermal neutrons into most materials allows for the analysis of bulk or localized depth-resolved properties in a wide variety of materials and components. Materials that can be investigated include metals, alloys, composites, ceramics, and coated systems. In particular, depth-resolved analyses using neutron diffraction complements surface investigations using laboratory X-rays in many scientific and engineering topics. The diffraction techniques can add significant downstream value to the anticipated nuclear industry development activities.IntroductionMaterials characterization is central in understanding the relationship between the structure, properties, and performance in order to engineer materials that fit the performance criteria for specific applications. The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

In order to obtain a more suitable separation medium for fine coal, in this paper a pulsed fluidised bed was used to measure the pressure fluctuation, density characteristics, bubble diameter and rising velocity of Geldart A and B particles in the bed by controlling the pulsation frequency and gas velocity, in order to study the fluidisation effect and two-phase distribution of the bed. The results indicated that with the increase of pulsation frequency, the breakthrough point on the fluidisation characteristic curve caused by particle adhesion disappeared, and there was an optimal frequency, which made the minimum fluidisation velocity of particles reach the minimum. In addition, the bubble rising velocity was also simulated. The relationship between them was established using a model, and the error was within 5%. This provides an effective way to predict the bubble velocity, study the distribution of bubble phase, and improve the stability of bed density.
