Some aspects of the mechanical behaviour of chromium-containing dual-phase 3CR12 steel were investigated as a function of the temperature and strain rate. The yield stress was found to depend on both the temperature and the strain rate, with no substantial differences between the longitudinal and the transverse directions. The strain-rate sensitivity decreased with increasing temperature. The yield stress could be presented as a function of a temperature-strain-rate parameter. Impact test results showed substantial differences between the energy absorption of the transverse and longitudinal specimens above the ductile-brittle transition temperature. Changes in energy absorption with temperature were gradual for specimens in both orientations, and the transition from ductile to brittle behaviour occurred between 373 and 173 K. Strain rates ahead of the tip of notches with different geometries were calculated and measured experimentally.

Geological mapping makes an important contribution to orebody knowledge during the evaluation of structurally controlled gold veins. Orebody knowledge comprises an understanding of mineralization characteristics relevant to evaluation, mining, processing and environmental issues and allows project expectations to be realistically set. Structural interpretation to define continuity and mineralization controls is a key part of geological risk reduction and the reporting mineral resources using the JORC and other codes. The Dolgellau gold belt is a small British field that produced an estimated 150 000 oz from narrow quartz veins. Historical records, recent exploration and production data, published material, and accessible surface and underground exposure provide a valuable case study. Previous mapping has shown the general geometry of vein systems, but tends to accentuate gross geological continuity. Recent work has attempted to determine internal vein architecture and examine the significance of the historical views of ore shoot controls. The work resulted in the definition of vein continuity scenarios for the gold belt and evaluation expectations associated with each. This has, in turn, led to a realistic view of what can be achieved from an evaluation and project development perspective.

A fuel cell is an electrochemical engine that converts the chemical energy of a fuel, such as hydrogen, and an oxidant, such as oxygen, directly into electricity. The emerging fuel cell industry may represent a major opportunity for the global platinum mining industry. This is because low temperature fuel cell systems use platinum group metals as catalysts. Fuel cell vehicles may become the most important driver of future platinum demand within years of their commercialization. A great number of factors impact on and drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicle innovation. Such drivers range from energy security to environmental concerns and the technological development of fuel cells and systems. Such factors and drivers of fuel cell vehicle diffusion are combined with the generic ?body of knowledge? on ?technology forecasting? and ?diffusion of innovation? to design a framework that provides a holistic approach to the analysis of this complex enterprise. An attempt is made in this paper to address the following questions: Which types of fuel cells require platinum group metals? Which types of fuel cells will achieve dominant design status? Will fuel cell vehicles diffuse successfully? How big will the impact of successful fuel cell vehicle diffusion be on future platinum demand? How well do fuel cell vehicles compete with incumbent technologies such as spark-ignited and compression-ignited internal combustion engine-driven vehicles? How soon will oil depletion start to drive the diffusion of fuel cell vehicles? How important is hydrogen as a fuel? What impact does the inadequate hydrogen fuelling infrastructure have on fuel cell vehicle diffusion? The paper contains some initial results of a research project that has the aim of producing a schedule of future platinum demand generated from fuel cell vehicles. Fresh water conservation efforts and strict environmental regulations have forced the mining industry to reduce freshwater consumption and effluent discharge. This is achieved by recycling process water back to mining processes. The performance of flotation circuits depends on the pulp chemistry. When process water is recycled to flotation cells, organic and inorganic species that have accumulated over time alter the pulp chemistry. The presence of accumulating ionic species such as SO4 2- and S2O3 2- has been found to hinder the adsorption of collector ions onto mineral surfaces. Sulphide minerals are semi-conductors; electrochemical reactions take place on their surfaces. The adsorption of collectors onto mineral surfaces takes place via electrochemical reactions. This study, therefore, aims to investigate how the presence of accumulating ionic species at varying ionic strengths affects the adsorption of sodium ethyl xanthate onto chalcopyrite from an electrochemical perspective. Synthetic plant water comprised of single salts with varying ionic strengths was used. Rest potential measurements were conducted to investigate collector-mineral interactions in the presence of these ionic species. Microflotation tests were performed to determine whether the presence of these ionic species affects mineral floatability. Higher chalcopyrite recoveries were achieved in the presence of SO4 2- than in the presence of S2O3 2-. Rest potential measurements were found to successfully predict microflotation performance in the presence of the ions of interest. A study of the end effects in specimen cores under compression tests, with a view to the elimination of these effects by A. L. PAINTING (Student) It is well known that a cylindrical rock specimen tested under uniaxial compression in conventional fashion is subject to end effects; that is, towards the end of the core, the stress and strain distribution becomes non-uniform. The experiment described illustrates such end effects with an aluminium core between steel platens. An attempt was then made to nullifythese effects by compressing the core between pads of mercury. The resulting stress and strain distribution was significantly more uniform, but a slight over-correction was introduced.

Scrap printed circuit boards were selectively smelted at 1 200°C to produce a metallic alloy having three phases. These phases were identified as a lead-rich phase, a low tin content alpha bronze phase, and a high tin delta phase. Electrochemical leaching studies on this alloy were done in 1 mol/dm3 sulfuric acid or in 2 mol/dm3 hydrochloric acid (adjusted to an ionic strength of 3 mol/dm3). The lead rich phase was more strongly passivated in sulfate media, and in this medium the high tin content delta bronze was more resistant to corrosion than the lower tin alpha bronze phase. In chloride medium the lead phase and both bronze phases corroded readily, but with current densities about an order of magnitude lower than in sulfate medium (static conditions) for the bronze phases. The high tin delta bronze phase was found to form a passivating layer in sulfate media. A similar layer was not seen in chloride medium. The leaching studies in sulfate medium also showed the existence of an alpha bronze phase of lower tin content in the centres of the alpha phase grains. This phase was quite resistant to leaching in sulfate medium.

An electrochemical technique based on the solid oxide galvanic cel Mo / Mo + MoO2/ ZrO2-MgO / Fe + (FexO)slag + Ag / Fe was used in a determination of FexO activities in liquid slag systems. The emf measurements, scanning electron microscopy, and microprobe analysis of the cross-sections of the electrolyte tubes used in direct contact with the slag melts indicated that slag attack did not affect the open-circuit emf values during normal cell operation, The reliability of the cell was confirmed by the good agreement between the standard free energy of formation of liquid Fep obtained in the present study and those reported in the literature, The FexO activities were determined in FexO -CaO and FexO-SiO2 slags at 1673 K, and are in good agreement with those measured by the conventional gas-equilibrium technique. The experimental technique was successfully extended to the measurement of Fe2O activities in the complex slags that are used for the external desilliconization of the hot metal product of the blast furnace.

The influence of Harold Hotelling?s work in the field of mineral economics is both unusual and outstanding. In the 66 years since its development, theory surrounding the economics of exhaustible resources has only been significantly researched since the early 1970s. At that time a wave of research into the economics of exhaustible resources arose from the threat of global resource scarcity and continued into the late 1990s. Current East Asian and global demand for natural resources as well as mineral and metal commodities, has stimulated interest in the optimal and sustainable exploitation of exhaustible resources to the point that the subject is worthy of review. Hotelling?s theory and the assumptions that he made in establishing a model for the optimal exploitation of mineral resources at the industry level and at the level of the individual mine owner, are examined. He showed that the rate of increase inexhaustible resource prices should be equivalent to the market rate of interest and that in a market with rising prices the rate of extraction should be constant. In markets where demand is stable optimal exploitation requires that the rate of extraction should decline over time, while in a monopoly market he showed that the rate of extraction is retarded. In addition, the effects of cumulative production on costs and prices, the uncertainty associated with estimates of the resource stock, the impact of exploration and issues of intergenerational equity are examined. An analysis of the optimal price path, extraction costs and mineral rents at an industry level is presented as a model. An analysis of the rates of production and optimal benefits at the individual mine level including total, average and marginal costs on the optimal rate of production, is considered. Optimal extraction rates for a mine with a clearly defined concave positive cost equation vary according to the position on the marginal cost curve. The influence of discount rates and the size of the ore reserves on the rates of mineral extraction are also examined and could define the frontier of usefulness for the ?economics of exhaustible resources?.

Project evaluation is completed through individual studies covering technical and financial aspects of the mine to market. These studies are completed at various levels of detail depending on where the project evaluation is in the project's life cycle. The competency of the studies varies in relation to the quality of data, level of the skills employed, control, management and reporting structure. The focus of this paper is managing elements of the study, looking at the cost of opportunity to influence the project, against the value added. Selection of the study manager and study teams is central to getting an integrated project evaluation addressing the correct issues completed on time. Retention of key personnel can reduce rework which, in turn, can reduce time and cost impacts. It is important to have a work breakdown structure at the outset so that the study teams have a common numbering and naming system that will integrate areas, equipment, budgets estimates and accounts. Having set up the evaluation groups and provided training in the study procedures, understanding the scope and schedule are vital elements in producing a project evaluation that addresses the opportunities and the risks of the final project. Arriving at an accurate capital budget requires integration of the research controlled through common systems. Project evaluation process must also address how the project is to be delivered.

The dual-electrode direct current (DC) arc furnace uses two graphite electrodes, one connected as cathode and one as anode. Such an arrangement avoids some of the design difficulties associated with the anode hearth traditionally used in single-electrode and twin-cathode DC furnaces, but can introduce other design and operational difficulties including deflection of the arcs toward the furnace walls. Counter-intuitively, both arc jets in a dual-electrode furnace travel from the electrode down to the bath surface, despite carrying electric current in opposite directions?this is suggested in the theory of the governing equations of arc formation, and confirmed by experiments using high-speed photography. The dual-electrode arc system at small pilot-plant scale is studied using a transient magnetohydrodynamic model capable of predicting arc deflection and interaction from first principles, and the results are compared to the behaviour of twin-cathode systems at similar power. Finally, a simple arrangement of the furnace busbars, M configuration, is shown to provide some passive protection against arc deflection.

Platinum base alloys are very corrosion resistant and have got a high melting point. Similar to Ni-base superalloys, which are used for jet turbines, the hardening effect of the intermetallic L12Pt3Al phase is used to receive a material that is creep resistant at high temperatures. Chromium is added to the alloy system to stabilize the L12phase down to room temperature. With the right amount of nickel the misfit and shape of the precipitates can be controlled. Various alloy compositions have been melted and analysed. With scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) a microstructure can be observed, which is very similar to the one in Ni-base superalloys. To support alloy development with simulations, a thermodynamic database of the Pt-Al-Cr-Ni system is about to be established. The SEM and EDS measurements provide useful input to the thermodynamic optimization. Also many data from the literature have been used to receive the best approximation. The Cr-Pt binary phase diagram has been reassessed and the latest results of thermodynamic modelling are presented.

The world?s second largest producer of platinum, Impala Platinum Ltd, approved two new twin shaft projects at the end of September 2004, Nos. 16 and 20 Shafts. Both shaft projects are stand-alone entities and are being sunk from surface. Previously Impala had embarked on a strategy of extending the life of its third generation shafts by means declines. No. 16 Shaft is the first of a new fourth generation shaft complex, while No. 20 Shaft is the last of the third generation type shafts in the so-called shallow to intermediate mining zone. This paper details the basic designs of each project and covers the initial implementation. Although both projects are twin shaft systems, the access methods from the shafts to the reef horizon differ. Initiatives implemented to speed up the projects are also briefly covered.

Expert Systems Technology (EST) is becoming more and more widespread in both its range of applications and the public interest. It appears to be capable of performing tasks unmatched by other techniques. Within the mining industry a large body of unsolved problems now appear to have a solution. This paper examines the current state of EST both in the context of the history of Artificial Intelligence and current efforts at building mining expert systems. It provides recommendations for those wishing to get involved, and outlines the problems for those who believe that expert systems are capable of anything and everything. The paper also provides a detailed analysis of limitations of current EST that must direct research into more fundamental, commonsense areas than have been extensively covered before.

The depletion of favourably located and higher-grade mineral deposits, combined with more favourable metal prices and higher capital costs, has stimulated research into heap leaching of lower grade ores and wastes. This has resulted in renewed interest in heap leaching of uranium ores, and in the development of processes for the bacterial heap leaching of low-grade chalcopyrite ores and the acid heap leaching of nickel laterites. A complete programme of heap leach testwork typically involves a sequence of bottle roll tests and column tests, followed by piloting on test heaps. The initial testwork is aimed at determining the amenability of the ore to heap leaching, which depends on the characteristic of the ore with respect to porosity and permeability to leach liquor, acid consumption, metal recovery and percolation. Subsequent phases of the testwork focus on the development of the process design criteria for the treatment of the ore. Basic techno-economic models have also been developed as a tool for the initial estimation of heap leach viability. Mintek has also developed in-heap monitoring probes, coupled to an operator guidance system, in order to assist the operator in achieving optimal conditions for bacterial growth and heat preservation during pilot-plant operation.
