Professor D. G. Krige, of the Department of Mining Engineering of the University of the Witwatersrand, received the degree of Doctor of Engineering (honoris causa) from the University of Pretoria at the Autumn Graduation Ceremony in April 1981. He was honoured an outstanding engineer for his world-renowned pioneering work in the field of statistical methods of ore valuation, or geostatistics as it has become known. Metalliferous Ore Deposits A short course on the 'Evolution of Metalliferous Ore Deposits' will be held at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, from 8th to 13th February, 1982.

This paper describes briefly a computerised model of the South African electricity system which has been developed jointly by the Atomic Energy Board and the Electricity Supply Commission. The results of an analysis of this system have been subjected to a fairly extensive sensitivity analysis which reveals that up to the year 1990 between 680 and 700 million tons of coal will be required for electric power generation, together with between 7 000 and 10 000 tons of uranium. This result is fairly insensitive to data variations, but the prediction of a cumulative requirement up to the year 2000, of between 1 300 and 1 800 million tons of coal and 25000 to 70000 tons of uranium, proves to be very data-sensitive.

Estimating the strength of rock materials by Z. T. BIENIAWSKI, Pr.Eng., D.Sc.(Eng.) (Visitor) A practical approach for estimating the strength behaviour of rock materials is presented. The demand for data on rock properties in engineering design is considered, and it is shown that, based on the trends observed in the South African mining industry during the last twenty years, simple and easy-touse methods for the estimation of the uniaxial and triaxial strength of rock materials are needed. It is shown that the uniaxial compressive strength of rock can be conveniently determined from the pointload strength index, which is obtained underground on unprepared rock cores. The triaxial strength of rock can be estimated for most practical purposes from empirical strength criteria. Two such criteria are proposed that allow estimation of the triaxial strength for rock materials to about 10 per cent. The only input required for these criteria is the uniaxial compressive strength. The validity of the practical approach outlined in this paper is confirmed from the experimental tests conducted on some 700 rock specimens representing five rock types. A practical example for the prediction of rock strength is given.

A Seminar to discuss 'Reactivity of Line in Steel Making' was held in the auditorium of Iscor's Headquarters Building in Pretoria on the 5th August, 1971. The Institute organised this Seminar on the occasion of the visit of Dr Obst of the Rheinische Kalkstein Werke GMBH, Wuelfrath, West Germany. The latter is one of the largest lime companies in the world and Dr Obst is in charge of their research laboratory. He and his co-workers have earned a reputation for their research into reactivity of lime in steel making. This work is also of great importance to the steel industry in this country, particularly with the changes which are occurring with the introduction of basic oxygen furnaces. Some 80 persons representing most of the major steel companies attended this Seminar. Dr Obst presented his most interesting paper which he illustrated with projector slides. This paper is printed in full in this journal. This was followed by several contributions and active discussions. The first contribution was made by Dr T. B. Beeton of the Research and Development Department, Iscor. He gave a brief summary of the studies on reactive lime carried out at Iscor since 1968. Their work was particularly related to the selection and definition of the various reactivity tests and the correlation of these with plant results. He demonstrated that the DIN methods, particularly the Din (40°) test, gave the best results and reported that good agreement had been reached between Iscor, Highveld and Northern Lime on future test procedures. Mr B. Lowther of The Northern Lime Company then dealt with problems associated with the production of high reactive lime. The rotary kilns at The Northern Lime plant at Lime Acres are particularly suitable for the production of high-reactive lime, because this type of kiln lends itself to accurate control of temperatures and retention times. Several problems, however, exist. Because of the long haul distances and the deterioration of reactive lime by absorption of CO2 and water, high reactive lime is not suitable for most customers. To constantly be changing kiln conditions to produce relatively small quantities of high-reactive lime, therefore, causes problems. Highveld Steel at present is the only company requiring high-reactive lime and a satisfactory product is now being produced at a cost because kiln capacity is reduced and fuel costs are higher. Dr P. R. Jochens, of the National Institute for Metallurgy then submitted data to show how the reactivity of soft burnt reactive lime deteriorated due to long railage hauls. Detailed sampling of trucks had been carried out leaving the lime works and on receipt at Highveld and it was demonstrated that there was deterioration in the top layers of the truck. This top layer protected the balance of the lime which is still in good condition on arrival at Highveld. Exposure to atmosphere by further handling and storage into the bunkers at Highveld, however, resulted in further severe deterioration in the lime reactivity and the lime when finally fed to the Basic Oxygen Furnace is reduced to one third to one quarter of the original reactivity value. The same deterioration does not occur with normal run of kiln lime, which is burnt harder, but still has a satisfactory reactivity for most purposes. Mr A. A. Hejja of the Department of Metallurgy, Witwatersrand University then made a contribution on the metallurgical aspects of the use of lime of different reactivities in the Basic Oxygen Furnace and the effect on desulphurization efficiencies. He gave a wealth of data on actual tests which had been carried out and came up with the surprising conclusion that the deterioration of high-reactive lime due to transport did not have as serious an effect on the efficiency of desulphurization as one would have expected. The efficiency was good provided high-reactive lime in the first instance had been produced, irrespective of whether it had deteriorated thereafter. Poor efficiency was obtained only when the lime in the first instance was produced in an unreactive form. The temperature rise in the Basic Oxygen Furnace also has a definite effect. If lime is introduced when the temperature is too high, soft burnt reactive lime becomes hard burnt and unreactive before it can dissolve in the slag. Use of ferromanganese slag assists dissolution of lime. There was a great deal of discussion following these contributions. Particular interest was expres8ed in the special lime described by Dr Obst. This consists of a mixture of fine lime which is premixed with fluxes and either briquetted or pelletised. The question of injecting finely ground lime as an alternative was also discussed. Both these systems eliminate the necessity for highly reactive lime. With smaller lime particles, larger surfaces are exposed thereby ensuring more rapid dissolution in the molten slag. The discussions generally were lively and informative and all present derived benefit from learning of the experiences of others. The valuable contribution made by our German visitor, Dr Obst, was particularly appreciated. The instantaneous English-German translation service which was provided, greatly facilitated discussions.

In this investigation, the effects of different coal chemical properties were studied to estimate the coal Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) values index. An artificial neural network (ANN) method for 300 data-sets was used for evaluating the HGI values. Ten input parameters were used, and the outputs of the models were compared in order to select the best model for this study. A threelayer ANN was found to be optimum with architecture of five neurons in each of the first and second hidden layers, and one neuron in the output layer. The correlation coefficients (R2) for the training and test data were 0.962 and 0.82 respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that volatile material, carbon, hydrogen, Btu, nitrogen, and fixed carbon (all on a dry basis) have the greatest effect on HGI, and moisture, oxygen (dry), ash (dry), and total sulphur (dry) the least effect. The present study investigates the feasibility of using some materials as start-up slags for the extraction of magnesium metal from Egyptian dolomite ores by the Magnethermic technique. The reduction of roasted dolomite (dolime) takes place in a closed evacuated electric arc furnace (small Magnetherm reactor) using ferrosilicon as a reducing agent and liquid start-up slag as a reduction bath under an inert atmosphere. The operational parameters affecting the stabilization of the start-up slag composition and the extraction of magnesium such as reducing agent stoichiometry, reduction temperature, and time were investigated. The dolomitic charge was in the form of sintered briquettes. The charge was reduced under an argon atmosphere in the Magnetherm reactor for constant period and constant temperature. The results showed that the clinker can be used as a start-up slag for the magnethermic process. Also, the optimum conditions for the extraction process were found at 2XSi stoichiometry to give maximum reduction of 80% after 15 minutes reduction time at a temperature of 1550°C. XRD and XRF measurements were used to determine the phases present and the extent of reduction of magnesium, respectively. The mineral exploration environment has observable economic characteristics, the assessment of which provides guidelines for exploration planning in the mining company. The long-term survival of the mining company is directly dependent on successful exploration. Exploration planning contributes to successful exploration through the development of exploration strategies. The objective of exploration planning is to select exploration environments which will enable the mining company to realize best possible profit and corporate risk conditions. Thus, the formulation of exploration strategies is based on profit and corporate risk criteria. Strategic considerations include the selection of commodities as exploration targets, geographic concentration of exploration effort, the realization of acceptable survival conditions, and the structuring of an exploration programme to optimize the economic benefits of the exploration investment process.

The impoved densification of sludge from neutralized acid mine drainage. by D. J. BOSMAN, B.Sc., (Member) The paper describes an investigation aimed at finding a solution to the accumulation of acid mine drainage in the old workings at Coronation Collieries, Kromdraai. The problem involved the neutralization of the acid in the water, without the large volumes of sludge and the large amounts of dissolved solids that usually result from neutralization. Pilot-plant work on the site using a limeneutralization process developed at Bethlehem Steel Corporation (U.S.A.) showed this to be a feasible method. A sludge of 22 per cent density was obtained under optimum operating parameters. The amount of suspended solids in the overflow water was very high, but this does not give rise to concern because the full-scale plant at Kromdraai will practise secondary sedimentation by running the thickener overflow through large dams with a theoretical retention time of 25 days. An analysis of the theory underlying the process is also made.

This paper describes pilot-plant tests on the recovery of apatite from a hitherto untapped material. This materialhydro- separator overflow-is very fine (80 per cent smaller than 45 µm and 32 per cent smaller than 10 µm). . The pilot-plant tests proved that the recovery of apatite from this material is economically and technically viable. This was confirmed by plant trials, which, in the early stages, produced concentrate assaying 36,6 per cent P2O5 at a recovery of 65,5 per cent.

In this paper the process of sampling and assaying as it relates in particular to the platinum group elements (PGEs) is presented. A discussion of the geology of PGE deposits is included to provide an understanding of the mineralization that is considered necessary prior to sampling, as this has a direct bearing on the mineral resource estimate and also the selection of an appropriate mining cut. The discussion includes the selection of the sampling technique (drilling or face sampling), the size of the sample relating to the requirements of the laboratory, the potential mining cut, as well as a reference to sampling theory. The selection of an assay technique that is appropriate and will yield the optimal result based on sample turnaround, precision, accuracy, and cost is then considered. Examples are drawn from work undertaken on the Bushveld Complex (Merensky Reef, UG2 Chromitite Layer, Platreef) and Great Dyke (Main Sulphide Zone). Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley ('nail' ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known 'Blaauwberg Ingot' was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

The last seven hot rolling passes of the ferritic stainless steel AISI430 were simulated on a Gleeble-1500D® thermo-mechanical simulator to investigate the effect of temperature, strain rate, and interpass time on the texture. The compression tests were carried out over a wide range of strain rates (0.1 s-1 to 5 s-1) and temperatures (1100°C to 820°C) with different interpass times (2, 10, 20, and 30 seconds). The dynamic recrystallization to dynamic recovery transition temperature was determined from examining the relationship between the mean flow stress and the inverse of the deformation temperature in multi-pass tests. It was found that the texture in the central layer of the compressed sample is a strong recrystallization-type. The through-thickness textural and microstructural banding, to a large extent, were found to be weakened by hot deformation in the two-phase (a+ ?) region, as opposed to the single-phase (a) region.

In order to meet society’s ever-increasing demand for metals and address the numerous technical, economic and environmental challenges within the current mining context, a holistic approach to process design, which is grounded in mineralogy, is needed. This would ensure that the impact of varying process mineralogy (and associated chemistry) on technical considerations and the associated economic implications and environmental consequences are taken into account upfront. This investigation focuses on the commodity zinc due to its strategic value coupled with limited resource availability and the wide variety of substantially different process technologies in existence. As the most commonly processed zinc ores contain zinc sulphides, the mineralogy/chemistry of these ores and their associated process routes will be discussed. The findings have been generated through the analysis of two case studies, Teck’s Trail Operations (British Columbia, Canada) and Hudbay Minerals’ Flin Flon Operations (Manitoba, Canada). The flotation of zinc sulphide ores to produce concentrates with varying mineralogy, represents the starting point for both case studies. The hydrometallurgical process routes for the further refining of zinc and other valuable metals include roast-leach-electrowinning (RLE), and zinc pressure leaching (ZPL). The effect of process route choices on primary metal recovery (Zn), coproduction of other base metals (Cu, Pb), potential for other valuable metal production (Ag, Au) including less well known, but increasingly important trace elements (In, Ge), and the production of other by-products (H2SO4, S0) are discussed. The economic and environmental implications of these aspects will also be considered. It is concluded that a quantitative modelling approach must be taken where waste management is integrated into process system design and simulation as a key unit operation. Methods based on regionalized variables theory, commonly known as geostatistics, have been widely used since more than three decades to predict/estimate spatial distributed data, namely mineral resources, with quite good results. However, some restrictive theoretical assumptions, such as the need of some kind of stationarity of data and the linearity of the predictor/estimator, are often wrong options in many applications. An alternative approach based on a finite mixture modelling, or cluster weighted modelling (CWM) technique, is presented and compared, in its theoretical and practical aspects, with the geostatistical methodology. CWM is a general non-linear framework based on the estimation of joint density functions allowing the calculation of the conditional probability function of the target values given their locations. Validation tests are performed in a 2D case study, where testing data proceeds from a soil contaminated by a heavy metal. The results of ordinary kriging and CWM estimations show a very good agreement with actual data. Contribution by W.D. Ortlepp In the Journal of May 1994, the authors first presented the concept and analysis that formed the basis for a design approach for deep tunnels, now expressed more explicitly in the present paper (March/April 1996). In a contribution in the Journal of March/April 1995, I expressed a certain disquiet about the validity of their original approach. The authors responded to these criticisms in the same issue. It is apparent to me now that both the contribution and its rebuttals were written, probably for different reasons, in such an obscure and pedantic way as to further confuse the reader rather than provide enlightenment. My concern still persists. But in order to avoid further confusion I will attempt to pose my uncertainties and difficulties in a much more direct way. On page 98 (top of 2nd column) in the earlier paper, an important statement concluded as follows: '. . . the horizontal ellipse requires 140 per cent less force for equivalent stability'.

Treatment of tailings is an integral component of mineral processing. Tailings with a high clay content are a challenge for the mineral processing industry; e.g. the clay slimes produced from production of phosphate in the mid-western United States and the fine tailings produced from oil sands production in western Canada. Dispersants are a commonly used process aid, but their impact on the structure and settling properties of high clay content tailings is not well understood. The paper describes the changes in composition and bitumen release that occur when mature fine tailings (MFT) are treated with a polymeric dispersant (lignosulfonate.) Synchrotron-source computed tomography (CT) was used to obtain high-resolution 3D images of samples prepared at varying dosages of dispersant. The CT method permits a powerful visualisation of the internal structure and composition of the samples. These insights will enhance our understanding of the structural characteristics of mineral tailings relevant to solid-liquid separation by flocculation and thickening. 'Gee Whiz', a nationwide schools' science and technology competition, is being screened on SATY1 on Friday evenings at 18:00. Twenty-seven schools from al over South Africa are taking part in the series, which will run for 13 weeks. The participating schools were selected on the basis of their performance in the National Youth Science Olympiad and in Mintek's Minsa science competition, which has been organized on an annual basis since 1988.

Abstract In the Kiirunavaara underground mine, crude ore is transported through ore passes from the production levels to the main haulage level. Failure and stability problems have occurred in some of these ore passes, with increasing frequency as mining depths increase. In this paper, selected results are presented from a research project run by LKAB. The presentation focuses specifically on stability analysis. Numerical models were used to identify failure mechanisms, in conjunction with empirical data and engineering judgment. The most important controlling factors governing failure and damage in ore passes were quantified. A causative model was established in which failure mechanisms and failure development were described. This model was used to formulate a prognosis of future ore pass stability, and for recommending remedial measures. Résumé Le transport du minerai entre les niveaux de production et le niveau principal de transport, à la mine de fer de Kiruna, se fait par des passes à minerai. Avec la profondeur d'extraction grandissante, les problèmes de stabilité au niveau de ces passes à minerai se sont multipliés. Les résultats d'un programme de recherche sur la stabilité des passes à minerai à la mine de fer de Kiruna sont présentés dans cet article. Les mécanismes de rupture ont été identifiés à l'aide de modèles numériques, de données de terrain et du jugement empirique des ingénieurs. Les facteurs principaux controllant l'instabilité des passes à minerai ont aussi été quantifiés. Un modèle a été établi dans lequel les mécanismes de rupture et le développement des dommages ont été décrits. Ce modèle a été utilisé à fins prédictives et remédiatives. Zusammenfassung In der Grube Kiirunavaara wird das gewonnene Erz über Sturzschächte von den Abbauebenen zu der Hauptförderebene gefördert. Mit zunehmender Tiefe des Abbaus sind vermehrt Standsicherheitsprobleme in den Sturzschächten aufgetreten, die teilweise zu Verbrüchen geführt haben. In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden ausgewählte Ergebnisse einer Forschungsarbeit des LKAB präsentiert. Dabei wird der Schwerpunkt auf die Standsicherheitsuntersuchungen gelegt. Zur Ermittlung der Bruchmechanismen wurden numerische Modelle in Verbindung mit empirischen Daten angewendet. Die wichtigsten Einflußfaktoren für das Versagen der Sturzschächte wurden ermittelt. Es wurde ein Modell zur Beschreibung der Bruchmechanismen und des Versagensablaufs aufgestellt. Dieses Modell wurde verwendet, um die Standsicherheit zukünftiger Sturzschächte zu prognostizieren und um Sanierungsmaßnahmen zu erarbeiten.
