A review of real-time particle size analysers A. L. HINDE,. B.Sc., A.R.C.S., D.I.C., Ph.D. The physical principles of different sizing techniques are critically examined in order to evaluate the suitability of the techniques for real-time particle size assessment. Examples of both successful and unsuccessful attempts at producing an acceptable real-time sizer are described in order to delineate the difficulties involved in making rapid and accurate size measurements. Only two of the examples described have proved to be suitable for on-line particle size monitoring, namely the "MintekjRSM Onstream Slurry Sizer" manufactured by Cartner Group, Ltd., and the "PSM System 100" made by Autometrics Co. Both these commercial systems are capable of assessing particle size with an accuracy comparable with that obtained by routine sieving and weighing. The "PSM System 100" has been used successfully for automatic control of grinding circuits. Economic benefits derived from this system, operating under rigorous plant conditions for several months, have proved that real-time size analysers are of significant value to the mining and metallurgical industry.

Research into the ferrous metallurgy of Rhodesian Iron Age societies M. D. PRENDERGAST (Visitor) Iron-working was a widespread economic activity in Iron Age Rhodesia, and merits historical and metallurgical investigation. However, the research done so far has been incidental and poorly disseminated. This paper reviews the available evidence and the ways in which it can be interpreted by archaeologists and historical metallurgists. Particular attention is paid to smelting techniques and current metallurgical research, and brief suggestions are made for future research. v074n06p254.pdf

Changes in the pattern of computer systems for mine planning and geologic evaluation are occurring as a consequence of the introduction of 3-D high performance graphics terminals. The VULCAN system is described and an outline of its functionality is discussed. Increasingly, the integration of both database systems and graphics and databases will occur, allowing a greater degree of information access to mine operators. The system covers areas of database, drillhole graphics, mine design and layout, surface and solid modelling as well as reserve inventory generation. The design of the software is such that it is fairly commodity-independent and entirely menu-driven, to enable non computer-trained personnel easily to access the system.

One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. The incorporation of individual cooling in a compressed-oxygen closed-circuit breathing apparatus by E. SHVARTZ, M.Sc. (U.C.L.A.), Ph.D. (U.S.C.) (Visitor) and N. B. STRYDOM, M.Sc., Ph.D. (Illinois) (Fellow) A conventional compressed-oxygen breathing apparatus, which did not include provisions for dehumidification of the inspired air at high environmental temperatures, was tested at these temperatures with and without conductive cooling in the form of 2 kg of pre-frozen ice placed inside the breathing bag of the apparatus. The pre-frozen ice provided conductive cooling of the soda lime and of the chest and abdomen of the subject, who performed moderate work at 50,1 "c. Without cooling, the subject was exhausted after 35 minutes because of a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of 46"c. With cooling, the subject finished 2 hours of work. This was possible by keeping the soda lime at a relatively Iow temperature, which resulted in a wet-bulb temperature of the inspired air of only 42 °C after 2 hours, and by conductive cooling of the chest, which resulted in the maintenance of a relatively Iow heart rate and rectal temperature.

The South African coal-mining industry uses a uniform safety-factor formula for non-squat pillars, incorporating a coal-strength constant that was derived empirically by Salamon and Munro in the 1960s. The constant is 7,2 MPa. Since that time, collapses of pillars at relatively high safety factors have occurred in the Vaal Basin. Analysis of the post-1960s' collapses indicated that the strength constant for the Vaal Basin is 4,5 MPa. A crude method for the prediction of the minimum life span of pillars in the Vaal Basin is presented.

D. Savile Davis* (Member): The members of the Chamber of Mines Research Laboratories, headed by Dr Cook, indeed deserve all the plaudits that have been given for the original conception of the rock-cutter, and for the research work that has gone into designing the equipment now being tested. Underground trials with the rock-cutting machines at the Doornfontein Gold Mining Company Limited have been encouraging to the extent that 29 square fathoms of rock have been cut in the past three months with two modified prototype machines. Both the hangingwalI condition of the stope and the control of stoping width have been excellent. So far, however, the rate of production has been too slow and does not compare with conventional stoping methods, due firstly to the time-consuming operation of moving the machine forward and resetting it in its next cutting section and secondly to mechanical defects. Although great strides have been made in improving the tungsten carbide cutting tool, further progress is dependent upon engineering development in the design of a more reliable and versatile machine within economic limits. Commenting briefly on the experiments that have been carried out on the Gold Fields mines, the rock-cutter, when used at the Luipaards Vlei mine, some 600 ft below surface, cut very nearly perfect slots above and below the reef on a stope face but was unable to cut slots in the reef itself. At the Doornfontein mine, however, where the tests are currently being carried out at a depth of 8,000 ft below surface and where there is a much greater pressure acting on the rock face, vertical fracture planes can be clearly seen in the hangingwall running parallel to the face. Owing to the presence of these fracture planes it has been found impossible to cut slots of any depth and the action of the machine is more one of spalling than of cutting, resulting in slabs of combined reef and waste falling from the face as the cutting tool advances. This is accentuated by the existence of a well-defined hangingwall parting plane. Most of the slabbing takes place from the slot cut below the reef to the hangingwalI of the stope. Since waste sorting in narrow conditions and poor lighting is not an efficient operation, the reef together with a proportion of waste rock, has to be removed from the stope. The ripping action of the machine as opposed to slot cutting under these particular conditions may not be a great disadvantage, as the volume of waste which can be packed depends on the ratio of reef width to stope width and with a narrow reef body some waste has to be removed to the surface. In these circumstances mining at depth with this type of machine should not be viewed as selective mining but more correctly mining without explosives. Another type of rock-cutter is being tested by the Gold Fields Group, consisting of a diamond studded rotating disc, which has, to date, cut slots 10 ft in length and averaging 7 1/2 in. in depth. It is, however, too early to comment on the practicability and economics of such a cutter. The great interest that is at present being shown in breaking rock without the use of explosives warrants comment on the Robins raise-borer, recently introduced into South Africa, and used for the first time with great success at the Doornfontein mine.

Mechanisms in the autogenous mill and their mathematical representation by G. G. STANLEY, B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits.), M.E. (Queensland), Ph.D., (Fellow) The special characteristics of the autogenous mill are stated, and a suitable type of model for the mill is presented. Details of the test plant and experimental techniques for obtaining the data for model development are next given. followed by a discussion of the methods developed for the computation of the model parameters, namely the appearance matrix, the abrasion and crushing breakage-rate functions, and the discharge-rate function. Examples of results obtained with the model are given, and finally there is a brief account of confirmatory work on a fullscale autogeneous mill.

Design criteria and recent developments in large-capacity Wemco flotation cells by P. KIND, Ph.D. (Clausthal), B.Sc. (Visitor) The scaling-up of the large flotation cells that have been developed during the past few years has been based on hydrodynamic considerations and has resulted in a 500 ft3 cell unit. Plant results on a porphyry copper ore show that the 500 ft3 unit is equivalent to the previously used 300 ft3 model.. . Plant tests on the use of 300 ft3 flotation cells for the recovery of phosphate, particularly from the coarse size fractions, are also described.

These effects were investigated in batch flotation studies, and by the measurement of rest and pulp potentials. At Iow additions of sulphurous acid as the pH regulator, flotation rate increased with increasing concentrations of dissolved oxygen. The recovery of chalcopyrite dropped significantly below a pH value of about 6,5 at 25 p.p.m. of dissolved oxygen, and below a pH value of about 6 at a dissolved-oxygen concentration of 8,2 p.p.m. The rest and pulp potentia Is measured indicated that dixanthogen is the dominant species formed on chalcopyrite surfaces during flotation with sodium ethyl xanthate. The results suggested that the same species might have formed on galena surfaces in the pulp after the ore had been milled in a ceramic mill under nitrogen. Increased additions of sulphurous, sulphuric, and hydrochloric acids increased the rest potentia Is, while the addition of sodium sulphite decreased these potentials.

Visit to the Datsun Nissan Company's body pressing and assembly plant at Rosslyn, Pretoria, and the Claremont-Danville Tunnel on 27th February, 1970. The excursion arranged for the 27th February to the Datsun Nissan motor car assembly plant at Rosslyn, near Pretoria, in the morning and the Claremont-Danville tunnel in the afternoon was well supported by some 43 members. The visitors were met at the factory by Mr Rademeyer, the Industrial Relations Manager, and members of his staff and were taken to the artisan training centre for light refreshments. There is a well-equipped training section with an air-conditioned lecture hall; we were told that such training facilities were important because of the cosmopolitan nature of the artisan staff. The visitors were divided into small parties and taken to the tool die and jig-making section, which is perhaps the key department for a factory of this nature. There the many dies for the presses in the body pressing section, as well as the complicated jigs for body welding are made. The technique for making the castings for the dies is interesting. A polystyrene model of the casting is embedded in moulding sand. In a neighbouring foundry molten metal is pressed into the headers and burns away the polystyrene, which leaves no residue, and this exactly fills the space occupied by the model. This rough casting is then machined in large copying machines (costing as much as Rl80 000). An exact plastic model of the surface of the pressing required, set up in juxtaposition to this casting is traversed by a master stylus which operates the slave milling cutter, thereby machining the surface to close tolerances. The machined casting is cleaned up by hand and finally finished in large spotting machines, using a blue dye to show up high spots, to the fine degree of accuracy required. The body pressing section was next visited. There the large number of pressed parts which make up a vehicle body are pressed out of special deep drawing steel plate. Some of the largest presses were capable of applying a pressure of 1 200 tons and cost as much as Rl85 000 each. The visitors then followed through to the assembly section where jigs are used to hold together the many pressings, which are then spot welded into body frames. The frames go to an assembly line where they are finished to the stage for painting. The continuous crawl painting assembly line carries the frames through all the stages of prime coating with zinc phosphate sprayed on in a tunnel, followed by immersion of the lower parts in a priming bath, then drying and spray painting and baking in tunnels. The body frames, after painting, join another assembly line, where the doors, upholstery and many fittings are attached. After this stage the completed bodies are lowered onto and attached to the chassis units which are largely assembled from imported parts (engines, transmission units, etc.). From the end of the line the completed cars are driven off to the trial track and then pass through a tunnel with powerful water sprays to detect leaks in the body work. The proportion of locally made parts is just on 45 per cent. An interesting aspect of the assembly organization is that, of the 140 or 160 cars completed each day there may be included some of each of the Datsun model as well as some Renault and Alfa Romeo models models which are assembled by this company. The change from one model to another several times a day does not present any difficulty to the organization. Each section of the assembly plant 'buys' the units from the preceeding section and 'sells' to the succeeding section. This means that the responsibility of each section ends when the unit is sold to the next section. The cost of repairing any faults found subsequently is charged to the section where it is found, which puts a powerful emphasis on meticulous inspections between sections to safeguard their costs. After the tour the parties assembled at the lecture hall where a lavish cold buffet luncheon was provided by the company. After luncheon Mr A. R. C. Fowler, on behalf of the Institute, thanked the Managing Director, Mr W. J. Wilson and his staff for this most interesting and well organized visit. The party then left for the Claremont-Danville tunnel. The tunnel is being driven by General Mining Federale Kontrakteurs through the Daspoort Range, Pretoria, to link the suburbs of Danville, near Iscor, and Claremont, which at present can only be reached by a nine mile detour. It is estimated that some 6000 vehicles per day will use the tunnel. Before entering the tunnel a short talk was given by Mr Ross who is in charge of operations. "Tenke Fungurume Mining Company (TFM), located in Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), began production of copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide in March 2009. Copper production capacity was 115 000 t/a utilizing a semi-autogenous grinding, agitated leach, countercurrent decantation process followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW). Cobalt production capacity (as cobalt hydroxide) was 8000 t/a utilizing a three-stage purification/precipitation process treating raffinate from the copper SX-EW process. Recently a phase II expansion was completed, in which copper electrowinning capacity was doubled and four stages were added to the SX plant. Corresponding enhancements were made to mining, milling, and processing to bring production to 195 kt/a copper and 15 kt/a cobalt. An additional sulphuric acid plant is currently being constructed, adding 1400 t/d sulphuric acid to bring total acid production to 2250 t/d for use in leaching at TFM.Initial copper electrowinning results were satisfactory, but cathode quality and current efficiency decreased as copper production increased. The Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) Technology Centre and TFM personnel began operation of two bench-scale copper electrowinning cells in the tankhouse to diagnose chemistry effects on the cathode and anode. The results indicated an excellent electrolyte chemistry, producing finely crystalline copper at 430 A/m2 current density with 98% current efficiency. Attention next turned to the physical factors of the electrowinning cells, including electrode insulator geometry and performance. A demonstration cell was selected in the tankhouse and was operated with varying cathode and anode insulator geometries. Operation of the demonstration cell with a three-side cathode edge strip, A-style anode insulators, and an improved cell furniture design increased current efficiency from 77% to 89% at 400 A/m2 current density. Cathode quality improved correspondingly. TFM is now operating at 92% current efficiency."

A new model for hollow rock bolts which comprises rock material, hollow bolt material, bolt/rock interface, is developed on the base of the composite element method (CEM). The main advantage of the new model is that it can be incorporated into the conventional finite element analysis. So the mesh generation of bolted rock structures becomes more convenient and feasible, which is very important in the optimisation of reinforcement design: the mesh can be kept unchanged when the number and orientation of bolts are adjusted. The comparison of the calculation results with a conventional FE approach shows the robustness of the proposed method. Un nouveau modèle numérique de boulons creux comprenant la roche, le matériau du boulon creux et l’interface roche / boulon est développé sur la base de la méthode des éléments composites (CEM). L’avantage principal du nouveau modèle est la possibilité de l’incorporer dans une analyse aux éléments finis conventionnelle. Ainsi la génération du maillage d’une structure rocheuse ancrée devient plus simple ce qui est très important pour une optimisation du projet : en cas d’ajustement du nombre et de l’orientation des boulons, le maillage reste inchangé. La comparaison de résultats de calcul avec ceux obtenus par un code aux éléments finis conventionnel montre la robustesse de la méthode proposée. Auf der Grundlage der Verbund-Element-Methode (CEM) wird ein neues Modell für hohle Reibungsanker entwickelt, das den Fels, das Ankermaterial und die Kontaktfläche Fels / Anker umfasst. Der Hauptvorteil des neuen Modells ist die Möglichkeit, es in eine konventionelle FE-Analyse einzubetten. So wird die Netz-Generierung für verankerte Fels-Bauwerke einfacher, was für die Optimierung des Verankerungs-Projekts von Wichtigkeit ist: wenn Zahl und Orientierung der Anker variiert werden, bleibt das Netz unverändert. Der Vergleich von Rechenergebnissen mit solchen aus einer konventionellen FE-Rechnung zeigen die Robustheit der vorgestellten Methode.
