"The accurate modelling of geometallurgical data can significantly improve decision-making and help optimize mining operations. This case study compares models for predicting copper recovery from three indirect test measurements that are typically available, to avoid the cost of direct measurement of recovery. Geometallurgical data from 930 drill core samples, with an average length of 19 m, from an orebody in South America have been analysed. The data includes copper recovery and the results of three other tests: Bond mill index test; resistance to abrasion and breakage index; and semi-autogenous grinding power index test. A genetic algorithm is used to impute missing data at some locations so as to make use of all 930 samples. The distribution of the variables is modelled with D-vine copula and predictions of copper recovery are compared with those from regressions fitted by ordinary least squares and generalized least squares. The D-vine copula model had the least mean absolute error. IntroductionIn this paper we compare the use of D-vine copula, generalized least squares (GLS), and ordinary least squares (OLS) for modelling geometallurgical data from an orebody in South America. The first objective is to construct models for predicting copper recovery (Rec) from the Bond mill index test (BWi); resistance to abrasion and breakage index (A*b); and semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) power index test (Spi). This involves fitting a D-vine copula and regression models fitted by OLS and GLS. The second objective is to investigate the performance of the fitted models for predicting Rec (Willmott and Matsuura 2005).Traditional resource model approaches either ignore the mineral processing characteristics of extracted tonnages or treat processing as an independent component of a mining operation. The net present value (or any other objective) can be truly optimized only by considering the mining operation as an integrated system in which net value is defined as the end-product that the company sells. This approach requires the resource model to be extended to include all relevant rock properties and processing responses."

Dry coal processing is becoming increasingly favoured as a fine coal beneficiation technique. The decline in suitable good-quality coal, as well as the ongoing decrease in usable process water, makes dry beneficiation of the fine coal fraction even more crucial. Dry fine coal beneficiation is a relatively young process with most of the methods still in the developmental phase. Additionally, many of the dry processing options available are better suited for coarser (+6 mm) and easy-to-beneficiate coal. Air winnowing for fine particles has been established in both agricultural and pharmaceutical industries, which indicates that the method can be used to separate smaller particles on a density basis and therefore, may prove effective in the coal industry as well. A proof of concept study was conducted using both computer-based simulations (which do not form part of this paper) and physical experiments. The initial winnowing unit consisted of a closed box with a horizontal air stream flowing through the top section. Coal particles were injected into the air stream and displaced horizontally across a distance (x), depending on the particle size and density, thus actuating a separation based on these two parameters. For this study particle sizes of 6, 4 and 2 mm were used all with a density ranging from 1200 kg·m-3 to 2000 kg·m-3. The simulation in Star CCM+ confirmed the findings of the mathematic behavioural model and provided a virtual representation of the separation using streamlines and particle tracks. The coal tests prove that size separation can be achieved at an airflow velocity of 21 m·s-1 and the density cut-point can also be predicted by using the prediction matrices constructed as part of this study. The results show efficiency values (EPM) of 0.11 and 0.09 at density cut-points of 1400 kg·m-3 and 1500 kg·m-3 respectively. The data obtained from the study indicates that air winnowing can be used to separate fine coal particles based on both size and density. However, in order to achieve an efficient density separation, a narrow size range is required. With some improvements to the model, simulation, method and design, the separation efficiency can also be improved. The next phase of testing will include the upscaling of the process to a demonstration plant, optimising the separation unit and testing the method on different qualities of coal. High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) as an efficient grinding technology plays a major role in mineral processing plants. Investigating the effects of this technology on different parts of mineral processing circuits reveals this technology’s capability. In this paper, HPGR grinding effects on an iron ore beneficiation circuit, in comparison with conventional crushing systems were studied. A representative feed sample was taken from an iron ore beneficiation plant, then crushed to minus 6 mm in a laboratory by two methods: HPGR and cone crusher, and finally a concentrate plant circuit was simulated. Plant simulation was performed by doing laboratory tests consisting of grinding, magnetic separation, flotation and filtration on HPGR and cone crusher products, respectively. According to comminution tests results, in particle sizes smaller than 6 mm, a cone crusher product is coarser than an HPGR product. Also, the Bond ball mill work index of the HPGR product was 10% less than the crusher product. Therefore, based on the Bond formula in applying HPGR, ball mill power consumption decreased by 12%. After ball milling to minus 100 microns, magnetic separation tests results showed that the recovery of the cone crusher circuit output was 90.8% and the product Fe grade was 66.4%. For the HPGR circuit these figures were 87.6% and 67.3%, respectively. Therefore, by using an HPGR, a higher Fe grade of the final concentrate was achieved. A flotation test was then performed on the magnetic separation concentrate, where the results showed that the crusher circuit recovery and the sulfur grade of the product were 96.5% and 0.192%, respectively; whereas the HPGR circuit recovery was 97.2% with a sulfur content of 0.185%. Findings revealed that flotation performance in the HPGR circuit was more efficient than the crusher circuit. Vacuum filtration tests on concentrate produced through the HPGR circuit resulted in a moisture content of 12% that was 2% higher than the crusher circuit’s concentrate in the same condition. A decision by joint-venture partners Anglo American, Gencor, and the Industrial Development Corporation to proceed with the expansion of the Columbus Stainless Steel plant in Middelburg will contribute significantly towards the economic growth that South Africa needs so desperately. The expanded facility, expected to come on-line in 1995, will be the largest single-plant producer of stainless steel in the world, and the company will rank sixth overall in world production.

"A methodology is proposed to develop an optimization model to understand the impact of transporting minerals, from mines to the final destination, on air quality. Recently, there has been increasing concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years, and the regional environmental changes brought about by a single project. Environmental issues in the iron ore industry have highlighted the need to broaden the cumulative impact assessment. In this study, we simulated the optimal routes and quantity of materials needed to meet the destination plant demand based upon environment constraints (level of air pollution), as well as the cost of transportation and availability of materials. Multiple scenarios were developed to analyse the effects of changes in routes, alternative transport system (or multi-modal split), traffic congestion, and the cumulative impacts on air quality. The air quality impact zones of the study area were demarcated using a GIS technique. The expected outcome of the study is the selection of a suitable transport system for a particular site with the least impact on air quality, including the transportation route, relative to the minimum cost of transportation of the minerals from the mines to their final destination. The proposed methodology is evaluated with a case study. IntroductionIn India, the process of environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been focused primarily on the local impacts of projects, without considering regional environmental effects. Environmental clearances for proposed projects are based on reports of local impacts. However, any developmental project poses a potential risk to the environment as a whole, and not just in the immediate vicinity of the project. Recently, there has been increased concern about the combined effects of multiple activities over many years—the regional environmental changes due to development of a single project (Dutta, Mahatha, and De, 2004). Environmental issues throughout the country, particularly in the iron ore industry, have emphasized the need to broaden the analysis to include the combined impacts, or those forecast for a proposed region, on an existing environment. The most significant adverse environmental consequences of iron ore transportation are the deterioration of biodiversity and air quality (Kumar and Ajay, 2015)."

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

The proper understanding of the functioning of ground support under dynamic loading and the current approaches to designing of dynamic support are plagued by a great deal of uncertainty and lack of knowledge. This applies equally to the understanding of the support capacity as well as the demand placed onto the support due to dynamic loading. This lack of understanding currently leads to a case of design indeterminacy. This paper does not aim to solve this problem of design indeterminacy but to explore some of the issues that need consideration to obtain a better understanding of the dynamic demand on ground support systems. The effects of utilizing recycled tailings pond water from the flotation plant at the Mining Company of Guemassa (MCG) on galena recovery and selectivity towards chalcopyrite (RPb-Cu) , sphalerite (RPb- Zn), and pyrrhotite (RPb-Fe) were studied at bench scale. The results showed that recycling the tailings pond water in the lead circuit without addition of fresh water gave a good flotation performance in terms of lead recovery (Rpb) (75%) and selectivity towards the other metals: RPb-Cu (54%), RPb-Zn (60%) and RPb-Fe(65%). This allows the water to be recycled at least four times. However, increasing the d80 from 100 μm to 160 μm currently used at the MCG plant had a negative effect on the lead flotation performance.

The dispersion of mature fine oil sands tailings (MFT) by the addition of sodium lignosulfonate was studied using contact angle measurements, optical scattering, and particle size measurements. Lignosulfonate caused the release of residual bitumen to the slurry surface and settlement of fines. Dynamic contact angle by captive bubble measurements were carried out on bitumen to determine the effect of the dispersant on the wettability of bitumen. Lignosulfonate caused a change in the aggregation state of the MFT and increased sedimentation of particles, as indicated by optical scattering measurements. Zeta potential measurements indicate that this change was caused by an increase in adsorption of lignosulfonate onto particles, which caused improved settling of the colloid. Ultraviolet Visible (UV) spectrophotometry and organic carbon content measurements showed that only a small amount of the reagent remains in the aqueous phase of the tailings, which is critical for decontamination of recycled water. MASON*, Ph.D. (Visitor) The work being done on Iron Age sites in the Transvaal is described, with particular reference to the finds at Olifantspoort and Broederstroom. The material so far found provides evidence for the production of iron and copper, the farming of cattle and sheep, and the construction of large villages by people who were probably ancestral to the present Bantu population. The material dates from as early as A.D. 270, but clear indications occur from AD. 460 onwards.

"The most commonly used high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) is the hypoeutectic white cast iron that contains 2–3.5 wt.% C and 10–30% Cr. This type of material relies on hard, brittle M7C3 carbides to impart good wear resistance. Due to its good wear resistance, this material has found application in the mining industry and cement industry. However, it has low fracture strength and this challenge led to research aimed at refining the microstructure. This was done by the addition of niobium in the range between 0.1 and 0.6 wt.%. In the as-cast condition, the addition of niobium was found to increase the fracture strength due to the finer eutectic microstructure. The hardness was also found to have increased slightly compared to the reference alloy with no niobium additions. Low fracture strength after heat treatment was observed in the Nb-added HCWCI, which is believed to have been caused by the precipitation of secondary carbides and the transformation of the matrix from austenite to martensitic. IntroductionFor the past few years Mintek has been involved in a project in which a number of alloys have been identified for grinding media applications. The high-chromium white cast iron (HCWCI) alloys were among the alloys researched for this application. The knowledge acquired from the grinding ball media research has now been extended to mill liners, which have traditionally been made of manganese-, chromium- and chrome-molybdenum steels. The replacement of worn mill liners costs the mining industry a significant amount of money and this has led to a need for continuous research to prolong the life of the liners. During milling operations, liner wear has an adverse effect on the capacity of the mill, the energy efficiency and milling efficiency and finally leads to relining, to replace worn liners."

This paper presents the development of a regrind facility design at BHP Billiton's Leinster Nickel Operations (LNO) in Western Australia. The recovery opportunity was identified from an analysis of plant operating data together with scanning electron microscope (SEM) measurements on relevant tailings streams from LNO. A laboratory procedure was developed to determine the potential recovery improvement of installing a regrind facility at LNO. The last step in formulating the process flow sheet and defining the process design criteria was to construct and operate a pilot plant, which incorporated four banks of flotation cells and an Xstrata M20 Isa Mill. Pilot plant on/off trials were used to define the expected metallurgical benefit. A prefeasibility engineering design and cost estimate was completed. Following a successful internal business evaluation, a feasibility study is currently underway.

"A method of optimizing the design of a processing plant has been developed which minimizes capital and operating costs for average stripping ratios and ore characteristics. Models were developed to describe the operating characteristics and costs involved in various operations such as up-grading, leaching and solid-liquid separation.The options available in up-grading policy and the relation between the cut-off grade and the costs incurred subsequently in the treatment of the ore formed the basis of the optimization. To arrive at an optimum plant configuration and a set of operating parameters, the interrelation between grinding size, leaching temperature, leaching time, and various plant recycle options was investigated."

Historically the insurance industry's involvement in any project has been relatively late in the process. Often it was a case of the last item to be ticked off the checklist has been to ensure that the insurance is in place. However, in more recent times insurers have imposed more restrictions on the cover they are prepared to provide, which has in some cases necessitated a change in the contracting structure to accommodate the insurance policy(ies). In addition, changing contractual practices have changed the allocation of risk between the various parties involved. This calls for a more proactive approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for both the construction and operational phases of any resource project. This paper explores how a risk managed approach to the design and implementation of an insurance program for a resource project can align itself with current management approaches to project development. From the authors' experience, this approach is best adopted early on in the project (often in conjunction with the bankable feasibility study) and follows AZ/NZS4360 to objectively examine and compare a wide range of risk exposures of the project in a time-effective manner across the following areas: ? personnel; ? environment; ? general management; ? compliance - legislation, systems, protocols; ? asset management; ? change management; ? financial impacts to the organisation; ? products/services; ? service delivery; and ? technology. Having identified and then analysed the risk exposures according to common consequence and likelihood ratings the next step is to develop a risk map of all considered exposures. The true value of this approach lies in the development and implementation of a risk treatment plan for identified exposures where the exposure is unacceptable. The plans will lead to the optimal solution to the appropriate risk prevention, risk mitigation and risk transfer options available. This paper also examines other benefits to the project that may arise from adopting a risk managed approach in addition to the ability to design an insurance program which recognises the exposures and the ability of the organisation (and other project parties) to retain risk.

Various models of near-surface kimberlite pipe emplacement have been proposed over the years. These include a top-down, phreatomagmatic model, a bottom-up, embryonic pipe model and three top-down explosive dyke models. AU of these models consider kimberlites as essentially the same rock type. However, different kimberlites have different pipe shapes and contain different rock types with very specific mineral assemblages and textures and therefore are likely to have been emplaced by different processes. Some authors have considered local geological differences as the principal reason for the contrasting geology but others argue that, while geological differences might contribute locally the petrographic peculiarities of particular kimberlites may be due mainly to inherent compositional differences specifically in the ratios of juvenile CO2 and H2O.

JoughinProduction planning is a subject that lies at the interface between the computing centre and mine management. Discus¬sion during this session was thus largely concerned, directly or indirectly, with communication between computing and mining personnel, and as such was relevant to the symposium as a whole.Mr A. Weiss set the tone of this discussion by referring to `user-orientated systems'. He congratulated Mr Burne in this regard, pointing out that his long-term production scheduling program, as a computer system, was similar in approach to the manual system it replaced, and was therefore easily understood by planning engineers. He asked whether the schedule engineer had his 'hands on' the system, to which Mr Burne replied that the engineer did in fact spend several days running alternative schemes through the computer. Mr Weiss commented on the advantage of having terminals on site for this sort of engineer-computer interaction. He also commented on the flexibility of Mr Burne's approach to scheduling and how preferable this was to a one-step optimization package. This was brought home by a question from Mr H. D. Small: Mr Burne's program sometimes found it necessary to temporarily halt an advancing face, and he asked whether the logic of the program could be altered to avoid this (e.g. by suitably slowing down the rate of face advance). Mr Burne replied that it was in fact easier for the planning engineer to sort this problem out manually. The way in which the computer results were presented made it particularly simple for the production engineer to see how to avoid or remedy a stopped face.On the technical side, both Mr Weiss and Mr H. M. Wells questioned Mr Burne on the handling of grade control by his program. From answers by Mr Burne and his colleague Mr K. H. Thomson it emerged that a spot-check on grade every now and then was all that was necessary at Mufulira, and that the idea of actual grade control was more a question of short-term than of long-term planning."
