Fragmentation analysis is an essential part of the optimization process in any mining operation. The costs of loading, hauling, and crushing the rock are strongly influenced by the size distribution of the blasted rock. Several direct and indirect methods are used to analyse or predict fragmentation, but none is entirely applicable to fragmentation assessment in sublevel caving mines, mainly because of the limitations imposed by the underground environment and the lack of all the required data to adequately describe the rock mass. Over the past few years, measurement while drilling (MWD) data has emerged as a potential tool to provide more information about the in-situ rock mass. This research investigated if MWD can be used to predict rock fragmentation in sublevel caving. The MWD data obtained from a sublevel caving mine in northern Sweden were used to find the relationship between rock fragmentation and the nature of the rock mass. The loading operation of the mine was filmed for more than 12 months to capture images of loaded load-haul-dump (LHD) buckets. The blasted material in those buckets was classified into four categories based on the median particle size (X50). The results showed a stronger correlation for fine and medium fragmented material with rock type (MWD data) than coarser material. The paper presents a model for prediction of fragmentation, which concludes that it is possible to use MWD data for fragmentation prediction.

Noise is a form of pollution arising mainly from the activities of man. One such activity is mining, in which man, as in many of his other activities, uses machinery of various kinds to achieve safe, healthy, and economic production. Trackless mining makes use of an advanced state of technology over that required In traditional mining methods. One of the advantages of the former, as distinct from any disadvantages it may have, is a reduction in noise levels, the number of people exposed to noise, and the duration of their exposure to noise. This paper briefly examines why noise is a problem and what various countries are doing about it in terms of standards, codes of practice, and regulations. It also investigates the extent to which noise is a problem in mining and how trackless mining alleviates this problem. The question is then posed as to whether South Africa is not setting too high a standard at this stage of its national development by comparison with what is being done by other, more-advanced countries.

This article captures the intrinsic differences of thermal coal products, their utilization and their substitution characteristics. South Africa produces approximately 245 million tonnes of coal annually. Eskom consumes 46% (approximately 112 million tonnes), 26% (approximately 65 million tonnes) is exported, and SASOL Synthetic Fuels consumes 18% (approximately 44 million tonnes) and a further 9% (approximately 22 million tonnes) is consumed by domestic users in various different industries. Marketing theory contributes significantly to understanding the importance of technical product and quality appreciation and comprehension, encompassing elements of price, distribution, and promotion. Coal product specification is determined by the inherent geology of a resource and the number of complex actions to market the product to a specific consuming market. Sampling, analyses, beneficiation application, and an array of parameters contribute to matching thermal coal products to the value-in-use it provides to the different markets and its consuming industries. Coal producer shave come under increased scrutiny since South Africa has been experiencing electricity shortages since early 2008. General misunderstandings were declared on public forums and in the media by both legislators and the South African public since a perception developed that South African coal producers are exporting coal that could be utilized by Eskom.

Calls for transformation in the mining sector are legislated. Whilst the composition of boards in terms of gender diversity and equal representation has improved, little is known on how women directors experience boardrooms. This research investigated the experiences of South African women in male-dominated mining boards. It questions why women remain marginalised in boardrooms, even when they are qualified as the men in their respective fields. The experiences of South African women on male-dominated mining boards were investigated by means of a multiple case study using a qualitative research methodology. Interviews were conducted with 16 women and 12 men serving across six JSE-listed South African mining companies. The findings show that irrespective of their qualification and experience, women,s, contributions are often ignored, and they are assigned to more social roles. Regardless of race, all women experienced gender stereotyping. Strategies are required to ensure that board cultures embrace female talent, where women can effectively contribute to decision-making and maximize their talent. It is argued that gender and identity should be studied in relation to post-colonial history in African countries. Women have multiple, varying identities, and their experiences require a unique investigation that would enable strategies to overcome barriers, through the implementation of an appropriate diversity management programme.

Permitted explosives in South Africa are those explosives approved by the relevant State authority for use in fiery coal mines. The main tests that an explosive must pass for this approval are the gallery tests derived from the Buxton (U.K.) classification. These tests are described briefly. In addition, the safety of permitted explosives is affected by their ability to deflagrate, and to produce a naked flame after blasting, rather than to detonate fully. Tests done on this phenomenon are discussed. A further potential hazard of explosives is after-blast fume. The testing and behaviour of several permitted explosives in this respect are covered, both in the laboratory and in the field. Performance testing of permitted explosives, specifically the double-pipe, underwater, and ballistic mortar tests, and their relationship to field use, are considered in some detail. The application of traditional and new tests to permitted explosives leads to guidelines for the safe and efficient formulation and use of these products.

Hulamin Rolled Products (Ltd) developed a high Mn and Si containing alloy, EN 4017 as a scrap consuming alloy from the waste generated in producing their range of clad products for brazing of inter alia automotive heat exchangers. The multifaceted composition of this alloy (Al -1.2 wt% Si -1.1 wt% Mn -0.2 wt% Mg-0.26 wt% Cu) suggested that it might display some degree of strengthening via precipitate formation of the Mg2 Si-types. The aging isotherms constructed showed that EN 4017 with 0.19% Mg reached a lower peak strength (YS~210 MPa and UTS~260 MPa)compared to the EN 4017 material with 0.43% Mg (YS~270 MPa and UTS~325 MPa). The higher Mg variant of EN 4017 was comparable with the age-hardenable reference alloy EN 6061. Selected area electron diffraction (SAED) studies proved that the microstructure of age hardened EN 4017 contained a combination of ß', ß" and U2 phase after being aged at 175ºC for 65 h. The general microstructure contained precipitate free zones as well as grain boundary Si films, although these did not lead to significant embrittlement. The role of Mn dispersoids in the fracture mechanism of 4017 is also discussed. The article will compare the behaviour of EN 4017 with that EN6061. A new shaft system was required to replace stope face for the North Section of Harmony Mine and to allow for systematic opening up of the North Eastern Section. Owing to the economic circumstances at the time the project started, it became vital to alter the original planning and to sink the service shaft first. The MATLA coal-sinking headgear, a novel presinking arrangement, allowed sinking to continue to 108 m concurrently with the erection of the permanent sinking headgear and sinking winders. It is estimated that this arrangement resulted in a saving of two months on the overall project.

Leinster Nickel Operations, located in Western Australia, consists of an underground and three open pit mines in relatively adverse ground conditions. This paper reviews our ground control practices in the open pits, covering aspects of ground support, wall control and monitoring. These methods have been effective in allowing mining operations to continue beneath unstable slopes. In particular, the use of Groundprobe?s Slope Stability Radar has enabled the Harmony Open Pit to safely operate for months following indication of failure from traditional methods. This case study highlights the benefits of investing in appropriate slope stability monitoring systems.

"Developing a greenfield mining project is a complex exercise: doing so in an increasingly volatile, uncertain, and ambiguous global economy adds significantly to this complexity. In the context of an elevated cobalt price, this paper outlines the metallurgical and process development of the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project for copper cathode and cobalt hydroxide production in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Chemaf has a long production history on the Copperbelt, a region widely perceived to be tough to operate in. This history stretches back to 2001, during which time the company has developed two copper–cobalt processing facilities. The experience gained in the development and operation of these two facilities has been used extensively in the Mutoshi copper–cobalt project. The metallurgical test work, process design, and project delivery approach are presented. Additionally, the decisions taken to minimize risk and maximize upside to the project are discussed. IntroductionChemaf (Chemicals of Africa), a mining company located in Katanga province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has been operating since 2001 with two major copper– cobalt processing facilities: the Usoke and Etoile plants. In 2016, Chemaf acquired the Mutoshi mine, which belonged to Gecamines and had been explored by Anvil Mining since 2004 under a joint venture with Gecamines. Chemaf appointed African Mining Consultants Ltd (AMC) to undertake a preliminary economical assessment, then develop a JORCcompliant Mineral Resource estimate and finally a full life-of mine feasibility study. Both a Mineral Reserve and Mineral Resource were developed and the final life-of-mine feasibility study is to be published shortly. A metallurgical test work programme was initiated and carried out by Chemaf’s research and development laboratory with assistance from the Chemaf process team. After completion of the initial test work, Chemaf developed a process design criteria document for a 20 kt/a copper cathode and 8 kt/a cobalt in hydroxide production plant, followed by a flow sheet and supporting METSIM mass balance. As the drilling progressed, the plant design capacity was revised to 16 kt/a cobalt production. The life of the mine at this production rate is over 40 years."

Zincor uses O2 enrichment (up to 26% O2 in the fluidizing air) to increase the processing rate of zinc concentrates in the fluidized bed roasters. The aim of this study is to determine whether O2 enrichment can be reduced by introducing micro-pelletized concentrate into the feed blend, while maintaining current roaster feed rates and calcine quality. It was found that, with a load of 20% micro-pellets introduced into the feed blend, that O2 enrichment could be reduced by 60%. It was determined that entrained particles spend on average between 0.46 hour and 2.44 hour in the roaster, compared to particles remaining between 3.93 hour and 4.00 hour in the bed overflow. This compares well with a radioactive tracer test performed by Spira. The required reaction time for micro-pellets was found to be less than the residence time inside a Zincor roaster. The result achieved indicated that the average particle residence time inside the roaster was increased successfully in order to compensate for the longer reaction time required to roast micro-pellets at lower levels of O2 in the fluidizing air.

The selection of an underground mining method stems from a multivariate analysis that considers geomechanical, geological, economic, and operational parameters. Even after identifying the most compatible method, there is no assurance that the mining company will achieve the best performance. The geological complexity of some deposits requires adaptations of methods described in the literature to obtain more selectivity and reduce mining waste. There are some studies on geometry of underground structures, but a methodology that describes an adaptation of a room-and-pillar mining method for ore bodies with down-dip varying from 20° to 25° is novel. The present work aimed to reduce dilution by adapting the traditional room-and-pillar mining method (TRP) to inclined ore boLittle attention has been paid to the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa after their lifespan. This paper aims to explore management gaps in legislation that have resulted in the non-rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa. There is growing evidence that supports the distressing effects of mining on people living around these mines in the North West Province. This paper was motivated by the current socio-economic status quo of old mining towns, the influx of illegal miners (Zama Zamas), severe environmental damages, and the violence associated with derelict mines. Underpinning this research was an ecosystem approach and integrated resources management principles, which formed the foundation for the decision-making process.The researcher used a mixed-method approach and employed convergent techniques. A semi-structured instrument was used to collect data from 200 respondents. The results indicated that there is a dire need for community-based consultative processes, and an absence of clear guidelines for derelict and ownerless mines to pressure mine management to adhere to rehabilitation standards. Moreover, the mining charter is ambiguous regarding policy implementation, budgetary allocation, and duration of the rehabilitation of these mines. The paper concluded that management challenges associated with derelict mines can be reduced if all stakeholders follow the guidelines as outlined in the environmental legislative framework (NEMA) of South Africa while being open to innovations in line with international best practices. It also contributes towards the development of guidelines for the management and implementation of legislation related to derelict and ownerless mines in South Africa from a philosophical, theoretical, and policy perspectivedies. This new method is entitled short-hole room-and-pillar (SHRP). The equations that measure the dilution are defined according to the geometry of stopes and openings. The results comprise comparative analyses of the operational and planned dilutions to measure the performance of the SHRP method. The average operating dilution of the SHRP method was more than five times lower than the planned dilution according to the TRP method. Low operational dilution indicates high selectivity of the method and its potential to reduce underground mining tailings.

A two-dimensional numerical scheme for the simulation of the plastic stress-strain properties of rock, and the various components of rock reinforcement and shotcrete, was used to rigorously determine the characteristics of tunnel support under squeezing conditions. D-shaped tunnels varying in size from 2,8 to 6,5 m in height and width were considered. The four main mining stages in the BAS block cave on Premier Mine were simulated as alternative sets of field stresses. The rock reinforcement comprised 1,8 m long fully grouted rockbolts and 6,0 m long fully grouted cable anchors at various spacings, and of various tensile and bond strengths. Various thicknesses of shotcrete and footwall support configurations were also considered. It was found that shotcrete and rock reinforcement, owing to inherent differences in stiffness, do not function in unison. As monolithic application, shotcrete has an overriding avidity for the imposed loading and destructs itself unless of extraordinary thickness. Under squeezing conditions, it accordingly supports the excavation surface while the rock reinforcement contains on-going convergence. The loads in the various support components can be determined only by simulation of the shotcrete as a stress-relieved medium to represent its broken condition in the field. The loads in the rock reinforcement vary around a tunnel and are the largest in the sidewalls. The loads increase with an increase in tunnel dimensions, the increase in load in the sidewall due to an increase in height being larger than that in the hanging- and footwalls due to an increase in width. Depending on the strength of the rock, the loads in the rock reinforcement become prohibitively large beyond a certain size of tunnel. The reinforcement of footwall rock can be omitted without adversely affecting that in other walls, provided the tensile and bond strengths of the reinforcement are not limited. The resulting footwall heave may, however, result in undermining of the reinforcement in the adjoining walls. A relative depth of anchor of 1,37 provides adequate bond strength in the larger sizes of tunnel, whereas, in smaller tunnels, anchor length is determined by the allowable convergence. The lack of fun column grouting adversely affects the efficiency of rock reinforcement to a major extent. The loads in rock reinforcement are very sensitive to the strength of the rock. Owing to a lack in refinement and calculational rigour, empirical classification systems are an inappropriate means for the design of tunnel support in squeezing conditions and, as a result, grossly unclear-estimate the support requirements.

It is of great importance to prevent a leakage of hazardous substances from underground storage plants, because this certainly leads to a fatal disaster for human societies. Therefore, effective grouting system needs to be developed, which can inject cement grout into low-permeable rock masses. Authors have carried out a series of laboratory injection tests using a fracture model and field tests in low-permeable rock masses. In these tests, not only was the superiority of dynamic grouting confirmed, but also the relationship between grouting-efficiency and injection parameters was investigated. In this paper, the results of laboratory injection tests and field tests together with theoretical approaches to them are mentioned. Par conséquent, un procédé d’injection efficace doit être mis au point, qui peut injecter du coulis de ciment dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Les auteurs ont effectué une série d'essais d'injection en laboratoire en utilisant un modèle de rupture et d'essais sur le terrain dans le rocher ayant une perméabilité basse. Dans ces essais, était non seulement la supériorité du l’injection dynamique confirmée, mais aussi le rapport entre l’efficacité de l’injection et les paramètres d'injection a été étudié. Dans cet article, les résultats des essais d'injection en laboratoire et des essais sur le terrain ainsi que les méthodes théoriques pour les essais sont mentionnés. Es ist wichtig, Durchsickerns gefährlicher Substanzen aus unterirdischen Lagerstellen zu verhindern, weil dies für die menschliche Gesellschaft unter Umständen zu verheerenden Unfällen führen kann. Daher muß ein effizientes VerfugesSystem entwickelt werden, welches erlaubt den Mörtelschlamm in wenig durchlässige Felsenmassen einzuspritzen. Die Autoren haben eine Serie von Laboreinspritzungsversuchen mit einem Bruchmodell und Feldversuche an wenig durchlässigen Felsenmassen durchgeführt. "Prior to operating a non-recovery coke pilot plant oven, it was essential to ascertain coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) coal cake into the cold pilot-plant oven by a pusher mechanism. Previously established laboratory-scale compaction parameters, to obtain coal cakes with sufficient stability, were employed during the loading tests of the coal cakes. Two different coals were evaluated, namely Waterberg semi-soft coking coal (sscc) and Oaky North hard coking coal.It was demonstrated that lower applied compaction forces (14%) can be utilized during 1 m3 compaction, in comparison to laboratory-scale tests, to obtain similar wet cake densities, owing to differences in the effect of frictional forces. Wet cake densities for Waterberg sscc improved slightly (3%) to 1.13 t/m3 when utilizing 79 t/m2 applied force for a 1 m3 coal cake, in comparison to laboratory-scale tests. Similar results were obtained for Oaky North hard coking coal, with a 6% density increase to 1.27 t/m3 at a similar applied force. Porosities decreased by 13% and 32% for Waterberg sscc and Oaky North coal, respectively, when 1 m3 compaction was compared to laboratory-scale tests. An opportunity exists to further decrease the porosities of Waterberg sscc during compaction, whereas acceptable compaction parameters were achieved for Oaky North hard coking coal. Most major vertical cracks and the partial collapse of coal cakes were mitigated, and high-stability coal cakes were obtained that could be successfully loaded into the pilot-plant coke oven by a pusher mechanism.Factors contributing to the instability of the coal cake during loading into the oven, such as vertical cracks, are (i) the cubic geometry (1 m3) of the coal cake, (ii) friction exerted by the oven floor, and (iii) mechanical problems, such as a misalignment between the pusher machine feeder plate and the oven floor. IntroductionOperation of the stamp-charging horizontal 1 t electrically heated coke pilot-plant oven at Exxaro Resources requires coal cake stability during the loading of a 1 m3 compacted coal cake into the oven. In this case, a pusher plate is utilized to push the coal cake into the oven over the oven floor. This is in contrast to a ‘spoon’ or bottom plate feeding mechanism as found in industrial horizontal coke ovens. The pusher plate loading mechanism dictates that the coal cake should possess high stability and inherent strength owing to frictional forces exerted by the oven floor. In order to obtain a coal cake of acceptable stability for the 1 t coke oven, various compaction parameters need to be verified and established."

It is a great honour to officiate at the celebration of the centenary of the South African Institute of Mining and Metalurgy. Tonight's festivities bring back happy memories of my association with South Africa's mining industry during my tenure of office as Minister of Mineral and Energy Affairs. They also remind me of the illustrious personalities who have preceded me on this podium. The Pioneers They include Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, who spoke in 1909 on the eve of the Union, General Smuts, and, on many occasions during the 1920s and 1930, Jan H. Hofmeyr. The basic issues addressed by them continue to enjoy the Institute's attention today, namely the optimal and safe exploitation of our country's mineral resources and cost-effective extraction of minerals from their ores. Translated into the Institute's key objective it reads: To initiate and give effect to the means whereby the requirements for technology and scientific knowledge if the minerals and metals section if the South African economy is satisfied.
