Seismic risk in the deep gold mines of South Africa has been studied for many decades. A clear understanding of the effect of geotechnical conditions on the seismic hazard nevertheless remains elusive. Certain reef types seem to be associated with a higher risk of rockbursts. The stability and deformation behaviour of excavations on the different reef horizons are affected by the rock types and the varying strength properties. The seismic response to mining is therefore also expected to differ according to the geotechnical conditions. As a case study of this behaviour, the seismicity at Mponeng mine was investigated. On the VCR (Ventersdorp Contact Reef) horizon, two areas can be delineated. On the eastern side of the mine, the footwall is shale, and on the western side it is a strong brittle quartzite. More large-magnitude events occur in the area with the shale footwall than the area with the quartzite footwall. Moment tensor analyses indicated that the majority of the large-magnitude events are not related to geological structures, but are face-related, implying that shear failure of intact rock is occurring ahead of the mining front. Preliminary modelling indicated that the closure volume for the shale footwall may be higher than that for the quartzite footwall, providing a possible explanation for the observed difference in seismic response.

"South Africa’s Northern Cape Province hosts semi-precious and gemstone occurrences that are sporadically mined on a small scale by local communities. Tiger’s eye, a gemstone known for its chatoyancy properties, is found in important deposits located near the town of Prieska, where is it intermittently mined. Challenges faced by small-scale and informal mining include mining without proper permits, risky mining practice in dangerous terrain, and illegal export of raw material without concerted effort at domestic beneficiation. As part of a study aimed at job creation and social upliftment in the region, tiger’s eye deposits in the Prieska area were assessed to assist small-scale miners to understand tiger’s eye grades and their distribution. This will allow not only more efficient and safer mining of these deposits, but also beneficiation of the raw product into tumbled stones, cabochons, jewellery, and other small artefacts for sale. A hub established in Prieska by Mintek trains locals in the beneficiation of tiger’s eye. Supply to the hub must make use of a consistent grading system, which is discussed in this paper. Together with proper mine licensing, such an approach will develop mining and beneficiation skills, and create and sustain employment for the local community. IntroductionTiger’s eye is a semi-precious stone known for its chatoyancy property, which is caused by parallel, silicified asbestos fibres that impart a silky lustre to specimens. Deposits of tiger’s eye in the surrounds of the town of Prieska, Northern Cape Province, formed the focus of a study aimed at small-scale mining and beneficiation of this commodity. The Prieska tiger’s eye deposits are located along the N10 route to Upington (Figure 1). Tiger’s eye is unevenly distributed and occurs as lenses of various sizes, interbedded in gently folded metasedimentary rocks of mostly banded iron formation (BIF). The tiger’s eye occurrence in the Northern Cape Province, especially in the Prieska area, has not been extensively researched. There is thus limited information available in the public domain. The lack of knowledge on tiger’s eye distribution has resulted in local small-scale miners adopting a trial-and-error method of mining. Basic geological mapping and field evaluation of the deposit, coupled with professional judgement, are important aspects of any small-scale mining operation and can contribute significantly to the formulation of various acceptable and equally viable mining methods and practices."

Low-grade, complex mineral deposits have resulted in the need for complicated large-throughput processing plants delivering increased productivity, reliability, and utilization, together with reducing operational costs. Complex mineralogy has resulted in complicated process flow sheets designed to recover minerals as efficiently as possible. In addition, the remote location of many minerals¬-processing plants, continuously rising energy costs, and fierce competition pose significant challenges to the modern mine, compounded by a global scarcity of qualified and experienced operational personnel. Over the last decade the Internet and automation technologies have undergone major advancements. Automation technologies, solutions, and concepts that existed, but were considered risky or unreliable prior to the year 2000, have now gained acceptance and matured. Furthermore, new technologies and different collaboration schemes have appeared, offering innovative solutions to the mining industry to address many of the challenges described. These advancements in reliable remote systems that access technology through the Internet provide significant opportunity to support mining operations, enhance process performance, provide engineering services, and proactively anticipate and execute maintenance services. This paper references a global survey of automation trends in the mining industry and the potential for an intelligent collaborative environment using automation technologies to exploit opportunities in operating the plant of the future, increasing effectiveness, and reducing operational costs. A variety of possibilities are described, including asset management solutions, remote access capabilities, performance monitoring solutions, advanced process control technologies, and the formation of an intelligent collaborative environment. A real example where this technology is used to support the operation and maintenance at a cement plant in Egypt is given to underpin the concepts described in this paper.

The influence of solution treatment on the phase evolution and tensile properties of Ti-Mo alloys was investigated to assess their potential use in biomedical applications. Phase formation and microstructural evolution were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The mechanical properties were characterized by means of tensile tests and bending strength. XRD analysis showed that solution treatment increased the volume fraction of β phase and supressed the α" phase. The microstructures of the as-cast alloys consisted of β equiaxed grains with sub-grain structures of different sizes, while the solution treated alloys comprised β equiaxed grains only except for Ti- 10.02Mo, which comprised needle-like α" structures. EBSD showed an increase in the volume fraction of the ω and α" phases in all the alloys after solution treatment. The elastic modulus and UTS of all the alloy significantly decreased after solution treatment, except for Ti-15.05Mo,whereas the elongation significantly increased. A conceptual scoping study was conducted to investigate pre-concentration options for upgrading ore from an Ag-Pb-Zn deposit. The low grade of the ore would result in only modest economic returns, given current market conditions. Several pre-concentration options were considered. These included: selective mining, crushing and pre-screening (following either standard or high intensity selective blasting), bulk ore sorting, particle sorting, jigging, dense medium separation, or combinations of these approaches. Flowsheets were developed for each option, and the upgrade performance was modelled using Limn to determine mass balances and stream tables. Due to the limited availability of test work data, the models were based not only on what test data was available but also on case study data found in the literature. The Bazin technique was used to derive assay by size data for different streams following crushing. Equipment lists and preliminary layouts were established based on the stream tables, and capital and operating costs were estimated for each flowsheet. This information was used to carry out a preliminary economic evaluation using net present value and sensitivity analysis. In this case, the most economically attractive process was found to be particle sorting; although further benefits may be realised by combining with bulk sorting. This account of his contributions to the mineral industry and associated organizations is presented as a tribute to all his hard work and dedication. Mineral processing The Fourteenth International Mineral Processing Congress, sponsored by the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, is to be held in Toronto from 22nd to 27th October, 1982. The theme of the meeting is 'Worldwide industrial application of mineral technology'.

A three-day symposium on the production of clean steel organized by The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was held in September 1995 at Vanderbijlpark. It was attended by 151 delegates, who represented the whole of the steel industry in South Africa: Iscor Works, Saldanha Steel, Columbus Stainless, Highveld Steel & Vanadium, Iscor Research & Development, University of Pretoria, and Technikon Witwatersrand, as well as the users of steel products were represented. Professor Allan Cramb held the delegates attention with well-presented research and practical information. He obtained excellent interaction with the delegates by responding in depth to the questions put to him during the Symposium. In summary, he emphasized the following aspects of the elimination of defects during the processing of steel in continuously cast materials.

"The chromium (Cr) content of stainless steel originates from recycled scrap and/or ferrochrome (FeCr), which is produced mainly by the carbothermic reduction of chromite ore. The oxidative sintered pellet production process is one of the most widely applied FeCr processes. The supplier of this technology specifies that recycling of chromite-containing dust collected from the pellet sintering off-gas and fines screened out from the sintered pellets (collectively referred to as pre-oxidized chromite fines) should be limited to a maximum of 4 wt% of the total pellet composition. However, the results presented in this paper suggest that recycling of such fines up to a limit of 32 wt% of the total pellet composition may improve the compressive and abrasion strengths of the cured pellet. In addition, electron microprobe and quantitative X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses demonstrate that chromite grains present in the pre-oxidized chromite fines consist, at least partially, of crystalline phases/compounds that will improve the metallurgical efficiency and specific electricity consumption (i.e. MWh/ton FeCr produced) of the smelting process. Introduction Stainless steel is a vital modern-day alloy that is well-known for its corrosion resistance, which is mainly due to the inclusion of chromium (Cr) (ICDA, 2013). Stainless steel is mostly produced from recycled scrap and ferrochrome (FeCr), a relatively crude alloy of Cr and iron (Fe). FeCr is predominantly produced by the carbothermic reduction of chromite, a mineral belonging to the spinel group characterized by the unit formula [(Mg,Fe2+)(Al,Cr,Fe3+)2O4] (Haggerty, 1991; Paktunc and Cabri, 1995; Tathavakar, Antony, and Jha, 2005). Although Cr can occur in 82 different minerals, chromite is the only source of new Cr units that can be exploited in commercial volumes (Motzer and Engineers, 2004). Approximately 95% of mined chromite is used in the production of various FeCr grades, of which high-carbon and charge grade FeCr are the most common (ICDA, 2013)."

The demand for rare earth elements has increased around the world due to their application in a variety of technological advancements. Previous studies have evaluated the potential of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY) hosted within the Permian coal deposits of the main Karoo Basin (MKB) in Southern Africa. However, not a lot of scientific research has gone into the Triassic coal deposits. The Triassic coals in South Africa were the first coals to be exploited for their thermal use in the 1880s, but the discovery of the higher rank and more abundant Ecca coal deposits led to the Triassic coals remaining largely unexplored. The demand for rare earth elements has sparked interest in these coal deposits as potential sources for valuable minerals. Late Triassic coal deposits in Lesotho have previously not been well documented and these low-rank coals can be a potential source of rare earth elements. This study aims to characterize and evaluate the potential of REY in the Taung coal deposit, southwest of Lesotho. Coal and associated argillaceous samples from the Taung coal deposit were analyzed using microscopic petrography for coal characterization and an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the amount of rare earth elements. Taung coal is classified as middle medium rank D bituminous coal. The total REY content in Taung coal and its associated rocks range from 162.9 ppm to 855.1 ppm, which is significantly higher than the upper continental crustal (UCC) average. The average critical REY concentration of samples from the Taung coal deposit is 189.4 ppm, which is three times higher than that of the Chinese Bayan Obo deposit. Samples classified as very promising and promising because of their outlook coefficients, are found to contain up to 77% of critical REY. It is envisioned that the area could be a prime deposit for these REY.

"The purpose of this study is to prepare a new activated carbon from olive stones for use in gold recovery by carbon-in-leach (CIL) and carbon-inpulp (CIP). The preparation method chosen was physical activation using steam. The effect of four process parameters: the residence time for carbonization, the activation temperature, the residence time for activation, and steam flow, were studied by the mean of response surface method (RSM) in order to optimize the yield, iodine index, and attrition characteristics. These two last responses were used as primary indicators of gold recovery capacity and mechanical strength. The results obtained show that optimal activated carbon can be prepared under the following conditions: a carbonization time of 157 minutes, activation at 921°C for 53 minutes, and a water vapour flow of 0.18 mL/min. This optimum carbon has an iodine value greater than 1100 mg/g and an attrition index in the order of 0.74%. These values reflect the quality of the precursor (olive stones) as a raw material for the development of an effective new activated carbon for the gold mining industry. IntroductionActivated carbon is an effective adsorbent widely used in industry due to its high surface area, well-developed reproducible microporous structure, and high degree of surface reactivity and adsorption capacity. World consumption of activated carbon is steadily increasing. It is primarily used in industrial wastewater and gas treatment and also for silver and gold recovery from cyanide solutions (Syna and Valix, 2003; Soleimani and Kaghazchi, 2008; Buah and Williams, 2010; Eddy et al., 2011). However, activated carbon is expensive and it needs to be regenerated after each adsorption cycle. In order to decrease the cost of manufacturing activated carbon, low-cost forest and agricultural wastes are considered promising new materials. In recent years considerable research has been reported on activated carbon from agricultural wastes, such as olive stones (Yavu et al., 2010), acorn shells (Sahin and Saka, 2013), peanut shells (Wu, Guo, and Fu, 2013), grape seeds (Jimenez-Cordero, 2014), coconut shells (Yalcin and Arol, 2002; Gratuito, 2008), palm shells (Sumathi, 2009), cherry stones (Jaramilloa, Gomez-Serrano, and A´lvareza, 2009), macadamia nut shells (Eddy, 2011), apricot stones (Soleimani and Kaghazchi, 2008), and bagass (Syna and Valix, 2003)."

The pre-concentration process of magnetic coarse particles can discharge waste rock or liberated gangue before milling, which is an effective means to reduce cost and increase the efficiency of the concentrator, but the weakly magnetic ore doesn’t have the effective separation method of coarse particle such as hematite, limonite, ilmenite and so on, Because the composite iron minerals contain both strong and weak magnetic elements, the pre-concentration process cannot be applied, or the existing pre-concentration process has problems of complicated configuration and high operation cost. By researching a new type of external magnetic separation technology, the pre-concentration process of composite iron ore was realised by single equipment, which can have a good recovery rate with simple arrangement. In this paper, the separation principle and structure characteristics of the external magnetic separator were researched, and the magnetic circuit characteristics of the external magnet were analysed. The laboratory tests of vanadium titanium magnetite were conducted, and the test results proved that the external magnetic separator can be applied for the pre-concentration process. The industrial application shows that a product of TFe 24.76% with 90.08% recovery, TiO2 10.10% with 91.78% recovery can be achieved from the feed of TFe 20.67%, TiO2 8.33%. The Bafokeng Rasimone Platinum Mine (BRPM) is a joint venture between Rustenburg Platinum Mines Limited and Royal Bafokeng Resources (Pty) Ltd (Bafokeng). The mining lease has been granted over Boschkoppie 104JQ and is located approximately 10km south of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The Merensky Reef, which constitutes the principal ore body, is geologically complex. A relationship between its geological variability and the associated mineralisation has been established by defining a number of facies types. The Merensky Reef has been sub-divided into seven distinct facies types: the pegmatoidal facies, contact facies, FW1 pothole facies, FW3pothole facies, FW6 pothole facies, and FW7 pothole facies. The Merensky Reef, which does not form part of the potholed reef, has a large component of footwall mineralisation. The pothole facies, in contrast, has mineralisation located in the hangingwall. Statistical analysis of the facies types indicates that they are unique populations and hence need to be evaluated independently. The mining lease has distinct structural domains that have added additional complications to evaluation of the Merensky Reef. The Merensky facies on BRPM exhibit unique geological and statistical characteristics within well-defined structural blocks. Due to the extreme variability of the Merensky Reef on BRPM a unique approach has been developed, within Anglo Platinum, to evaluate the deposit. Mining cuts are defined and composited for the individual facies types, and then modelled individually by applying known geological controls. The resultant grade models are weighted based on statistical and local geological knowledge. The object of weighting the facies is to replicate the variability observed in the ore body. The introduction of stringent geological controls to the evaluation process has resulted in increased confidence in the in situgrades estimated as an input to the mine planning process

Modelling and scheduling for Grootegeluk coal mine, situated in the north- western Transvaal, is by means of a series of modular systems. Modelling of the multilayered body, which is part of the Waterberg coalfield, was based on a detailed study of the behaviour of coal and waste qualities and the sub- sequent use of standard geostatistical techniques. A notable improvement on previous methods was attained. Scheduling procedures and systems were developed to model a multibench pit producing coal for several metallurgical plants as well as a power-station. Scheduling was done by producing a series of longitudinal cuts, the cuts being subdivided into increments. By allocating cuts to certain periods, the resulting calculated product tonnages were com- pared with production targets, and by iteration a final scheduling sequence was determined.

Rössing Uranium Mine operates a recovery circuit with continuous ion exchange followed by solvent extraction. Serious organic degradation problems were encountered during 1985/6, 2000 and 2005 in the solvent extraction plant. The preferential loss of the tertiary amine extractant was observed during the above-mentioned period. Previous investigations revealed that the tertiary amine was breaking down to nitrosamine, which cannot take part in the exchange reaction with U3O8. A reduction in the redox potential of the solvent extraction plant feed to below 500 mV halted this preferential loss. A lot of effort has been made to try and understand the actual mechanism for nitrosamine formation. Current understanding for the degradation is that formation is due to high nitrates on the strip side of the circuit emanating from nitrates from the precipitation process using ammonia. It is the current belief that pH lower than 3.7 on the strip side results in loading of nitrates onto the solvent. If oxidizing conditions prevail on the extraction side of the solvent extraction circuit, the tertiary alamine will then degrade into nitrosamine. This phenomenon is yet to be established and verified. It has, however, been established that the above process is brought about the following conditions ?High redox potential greater than 550 mV predominately caused by a high Fe3+/Fe2+ratio (4:1) ?Perception that if Fe2+<0.5 g/lit will contribute to high redox ?High concentrations of NO-3 in the conc eluate (feed to SX)/ammonium sulphate (NO-3> 4 g/l based on historic values) ?Presence of Mo as a catalyst ?Tests also have proved that the presence of nitrous acid in a concentration of 1 g/lat 550 mV leads to formation of nitrosamines from alamine.

Tunnel 99’, the Swedish National Road Administration´s (SNRA) general technical specification for road tunnels requires that the load bearing system must be designed to withstand specified design explosion loads. This paper presents the results of an SNRA study to provide a perspective of design analyses tailored to comply with the new requirement. The paper provides an example of a design analysis for assumed tunnel conditions using a numerical model. Dynamic predictions of potential damage to the rock mass and ground support system (rock bolts and shotcrete) from the specified explosion loads are presented including the nonlinear response of the shotcrete. “Tunnel 99”, qui fixe les règles de l’Administration nationale suédoise des Routes (Vägverket) concernant la conception et la construction des tunnels routiers, requiert entre autres que la structure porteuse soit capable de résister à certaines contraintes spécifiques résultant d’explosions. Cette étude présente les résultats d’une étude effectuée par Vägverket en vue d’obtenir une perspective d’analyses de conception spécialement élaborées pour se conformer aux nouvelles règles. Il contient un exemple d’analyse en fonction de conditions déterminées, basée sur un modèle numérique. Des prévisions de’études dynamiques de dommages potentiels subis par la masse rocheuse et les systèmes de soutènement (boulons d’ancrage et béton projeté) du fait des contraintes libérées par la force d’explosion spécifiée sont également présentées, y compris dans le cas d’une réaction non linéaire du revêtement en béton. “Tunnel 99” - die Vorschriften für Strassentunnel der Nationalen Schwedischen Behörde für Straßenwesen - (Vägverket) - fordern vom Tragsystem eine Auslegung in der Form, dass es spezifischen Explosionsbelastungen standhält. Dieser Artikel präsentiert die Ergebnisse einer Studie der Behörde, um einen Ausblick über konstruktive Auslegungen zu geben, die geeignet sind, die neuen Vorschriften zu erfüllen. Der Artikel zeigt ein Beispiel einer konstruktive Auslegung für eine angenommene Tunnelsituation mit Hilfe eines numerischen Modells. Voraussagen unter Beachtung der vollständigen dynamischen Berechnung zu potentiellen Schädigungen des Gebirges und des Ausbaus (Anker und Spritzbetonauskleidung) durch die spezifizierten Explosionsbelastungen, einschließlich des nichtlinearen Verhaltens der Spritzbetonauskleidung, werden gezeigt.

Means for the scaling up of such mills are suggested, and tests on a prototype mill are described. Despite the high lining wear in the centrifugal machine, which reduces its productive availability, its other advantages suggest that there is merit in pursuing its further development.

Because of the volatility of zinc chloride. this liquor presents difficulties when processed in a conventional pyrohydrolysis acid-recovery unit. (Pty) Ltd. which involves the use of continuous ion exchange for the separation of the zinc from the pickle liquor. and the use of liquid-liquid extraction for the conversion of zinc chloride eluate to salable zinc sulphate. A description of laboratory and pilot-plant tests is given. and the approach used in the design of a full-scale continuous- ionexchange plant is outlined.

The ferrite-pearlite microstructure is the most popular microstructure for alloys used in structural applications, including railway wagon wheels. These alloys have been designed through alloying and thermo-mechanical processing to have a refined microstructure. Ferrite-pearlite alloys are low cost, weldable, have good fabricability, and are reliable under extreme conditions. Given these performance attributes, it seems unlikely then that their dominant position as structural steels would ever be challenged by alternative microstructures. One major achievement in the development of ferrite-pearlite steels has been in the refinement of their interlamellar spacing to very fine distances of the order of < 0.3 µm. A refined microstructure increases the hardness of the alloy, thus increasing its life under wear conditions. The interlamellar spacing in pearlitic steels has, however, been refined almost to its theoretical limit. The increasing demand for speed and increased axle loading on railway wagons requires the use of stronger, tougher, and more durable materials. This has opened the window for the development of novel bainitic steels. Bainitic alloys have a higher level of microstructural refinement than pearlitic ones. They have shown to have good wear resistance and rolling-contact fatigue resistance, and high toughness. This paper will discuss the progress to date on the development of bainitic railway wheel alloys. Four alloy chemistries have been chosen for possible further development.
