The platinum group metals (PGMs) palladium, platinum, and rhodium represent the key materials for automotive exhaust gas treatment. Since there are currently no adequate alternatives, the importance of these metals for the automotive industry is steadily rising. The high value of PGMs in spent catalysts justifies their recycling. The state-of the-art technology is to melt the ceramic carrier and collect the precious fraction in a liquid metal bath. As the feed material has quite high melting points, huge amounts of energy are required for this process. Hydrometallurgical treatments of the spent catalysts offer the possibility to recycle the PGMs with less energy and time demands. Moreover, automotive catalysts contain further valuable materials to improve the exhaust gas treatment. These compounds, like cerium oxide, cannot be recovered in pyrometallurgical processes. This paper deals with a special process that uses hydrometallurgical principles to recycle the valuable metal fraction from spent automotive catalytic converters. Hydrochloric acid in combination with hydrogen peroxide is used as leaching agent. This combination selectively dissolves the PGMs and the cerium, which can be recovered in separate steps. As the leaching solution is regenerated and reused, wastewater generation is minimized. Furthermore, the process residues constitute potential byproducts.

Effective communication is a sought-after non-technical skill in the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) function and is fundamental in achieving an organization’s safety objectives. While different channels are used to communicate HSE matters, many organizations employ posters, videos, and/ or signs containing images to convey information. Communication through signage and graphical hazard symbols has been regulated in standards, but vast sections of HSE communication are bespoke communications and exist outside the sphere of standards. Effective HSE communication through images requires an understanding of the organizational culture in which the images will be used, as well as an understanding of the semiotics of the images themselves. Creative interpretation within HSE communication can create situations where the message that was received is not the message that was intended, leading to confusion and misinterpretation. This paper is aimed at elucidating the semiotics of South African HSE visual content. It was found that the indexical mode of images was most preferred in visual communication, and text-only designs the least preferred. Senders and receivers of messages differ in their opinions on the complexity of HSE communication.

In a flotation process of copper ore three factors were measured: copper grade in concentrate (β), copper grade in tailings (J) and recovery of copper in concentrate (e). The experiment was conducted by means of the Jameson cell. The factors influencing the quality of the process were particle size (d), time of separation (t), type of the collector (k) and dosage of the collector (s). The considered vector function was then [β(d, t, k, s), J(d, t, k, s), e(d, t, k, s)]. Optimisation achieved was based on determining the values of the adjustable factors (d, t, k, s). The goal was to obtain the highest possible values of functions β and e (maximum) and the lowest possible values of function J (minimum). To this purpose the taxonomic methods were applied. In many automated mines, multi media video and audio funtionality has to be combined with sensor information or steering commands, which is the idea of a new, PC based integrated and multi media capable control system. The new control system (Multimedia Control - MMC) bases entirely on TCP/IP networking and internet technology. For the first time, this enables the ‘intelligent’ use of video and audio information: pictures and voice sequences may be forwarded on request only, they may be stored if particular events occur (e.g. video black boxes) and sensor signals as well as actions from the automation system can directly be assigned with multi media sequences. MultiMedia Control entirely bases on object oriented software. It uses most modern software technology. As user interface, only a standard web browser is required. This makes the handling of different machines easy. By using mobile web pads, dedicated local operator interfaces are not required any longer. The service staff just connects to the automated equipment by – wireless –LAN to make required adjustments. Customization is easy using an open Application Programming Interface. Software modules may be added to the system without touching or recompiling existing components. The system was prototyped in 2000 using a demo-application. The performance tests showed very positive results both regarding the control system behaviour and the speed/latency timing behaviour of the multi-media information processed. The system now is slightly reshaped to completely meet the final product requirements. It is expected to be available by the end of 2001. Not all the recommendations made by the various commissions are recorded here, but those which are included highlight the fact that many of the problems that plagued the industry during those years, whether economic or labour matters, are still troubling the industry today.

Antimony oxide ores are important antimony resources, but their recovery is still a problem. In this paper, the adsorption behaviour and mechanism of dodecamine and quaternary ammonium salt on the surface of cervantite and quartz were investigated. The flotation behaviour of cervantite and quartz using quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine as collectors was studied by single mineral flotation experiments. The adsorbed amount was measured and infrared spectroscopy was used to study the ability of several cationic collectors to float cervantite and quartz. The results show that quaternary ammonium salts can simultaneously float the cervantite and quartz. It is difficult to achieve separation of the two minerals using quaternary ammonium salts as collectors. At pH>10, dodecylamine can float quartz but not cervantite, which can achieve reverse flotation separation of the two minerals. The difference between the abilities of quaternary ammonium salts and dodecylamine to float cervantite and quartz lies in the different ionisation properties of the two reagents. Quaternary ammonium salt is a strong electrolyte that is completely ionised in the pulp and exists mainly in the form of quaternary ammonium ions. This paper deals with procedures used for designing pillar systems in hard-rock tabular mines operating at shallow depths, typically less than 1000 m. A comprehensive review if current practice identifies four types if pillars, namely non-yield, yield, crush and barrier pillars, and the main principles for designing these pillars are outlined. It is shown that the current design methods for pillar systems in South Africa are mainly empirical, each mine developing its pillar-design methods based largely on practical experience. This results in varying pillar layouts, even between neighbouring mines, despite similarities in geology, and depth if mining. It is suggested that some current layouts may fall short if being the best as regards safety, the maximum safe extraction percentages, or flexibility in accommodating future mining scenarios in deeper or otherwise different geological conditions.

Uncertainty with regard to estimated grades and tonnages of a mineral deposit demands risk assessment in order to build investor confidence and attract the interest of other stakeholders in the success of a project. Uncertainties associated with Mineral Resource estimates can lead to unreliable production schedules and unpredictable cash flows. However, the techniques used in the mining industry to determine these uncertainties are inconsistent, because the important decisions taken in the process are solely dependent on the responsible Competent Person (CP), without limitations. This leads to disparities between different CPs’ results, using data-sets from the same drill-holes. The various standard codes for public disclosure provide guidelines and recommendations for the classification of Mineral Resources and Reserves but do not provide details on, for example, the amount of geological and geostatistical information needed to qualify for each category of Resources and Reserves. The parameters used to generate the classification categories are subjectively assumed by the responsible CP. In this paper we investigate the impacts of different CPs’ judgements on resource classification, using the same data-sets. The results underpin the need for the mining industry to develop a uniform Mineral Resources and Reserves classification framework that can minimize or avoid significant discrepancies that lead to potential misleading public disclosures.

A nutating grinding mill, exemplified by the commercial HICOM mill, achieves efficient particle size reduction through the accelerated motion of the material charge within the nutating chamber. This design, characterised by high particle velocities and rapid charge circulation, offers a compact solution compared to tumbling mills. There have been concerns regarding the mechanical reliability of kinetic joints for certain specialised mining applications. Recognising the need to model internal forces in such systems, this study focuses on the uncoupled simulation using multibody dynamics and the discrete element method. The investigation employed a small-scale experimental test mill, referred to as the NuMILL, featuring a cylindrical chamber (140 mm internal diameter, 245 mm height, 6° nutation angle). Instrumented with an array of sensors, the NuMILL provided internal load data for validating the simulations. Experiments were conducted with an empty chamber or filled with charge material. Charge materials included coarse sand or steel pellets with a charge-to-chamber mass ratio of 0.25. The mill speed ranged between 100 to 700 RPM. Multibody dynamics modelled resultant inertial and frictional loads within 5%, while the discrete element method simulated the internal material contact loads with accuracies ranging from 1% to 19%. The combined simulation approach predicted the resultant forces in the critical kinetic joint within a 20% margin. Representing the charge using rigid lumped mass elements was also studied. The presented simulation techniques, validated against experimental data, offer a robust foundation for analysing larger systems, including the industrial-scale HICOM.

The main challenges in most low grade iron ore deposits are finding the optimum flowsheet for beneficiation to achieve a final concentrate from both technical and economic viewpoints. Dry preconcentration techniques are being used to assist in reducing the amount of ROM feed to the plant. In this paper the benefits of utilising a dry cobbing magnetic separation technique for upgrading the product of HPGR in a closed circuit with dry screen 4 and 1.4 mm by performing a pilot scale test work was investigated. The experimental test work was done on two sample types of Yogi BIF magnetite iron ore located in Western Australia. Prior to magnetic separation studies, detailed characterisation of the feed materials including physical, chemical, mineralogical and magnetic properties were carried out. Furthermore, the effects of process parameters: drum rotation speed (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 m/s), magnetic field intensity (1100 and 3800 gauss) and feed size (minus 4 and 1.4 mm) were investigated. The results revealed that sample type1 with 33.90% Fe could be upgraded to 41.51% Fe by using a stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator with 69.12% weight recovery and 84.36% Fe recovery at a size of 4 mm. Also for sample type2, it is possible to increase Fe grade from 29.84% to above 36.68% with 75.58% weight recovery and 90.32% Fe recovery by applying one stage of 1100 gauss dry magnetic separator to a 4 mm size sample. The goal of the study described here is to develop objective. quantitative methods for estimating the outcome probabilities of exploratory oil wells. The study employs the 're-experience' approach, in which historical data are used in a manner which attempts to recreate the past. Our past experience, of course, is the principal guide to the future. To appraise present-day oil prospects, however, we must analyze prospects that have been drilled in terms of how these former prospects were interpreted before they were drilled. An analysis of how they are interpreted after they were drilled is an inadequate guide to the future because our hindsight knowledge is superior to our foresight knowledge. Objective calculation of future outcome probabilities, then, requires that we attempt to treat past information in a manner analogous to that in which we must treat present information in forecasting future outcomes.

Palabora Mining Company is one of the largest low-grade copper mines globally. The mine uses block caving for the extraction of the orebody. This paper enumerates the drawpoint loading strategies for the overall head grade improvements, particularly for a block that is nearing depletion. A comprehensive literature review of various considerations relating to improving productivity in block caving is presented to contextualize the draw control in caving. From this study, an optimized draw control strategy is presented, which focuses on three parameters that include grade distribution, loading compliance, and tonnage splits per sector. An empirical method based on the relational study between various parameters is used to outline the key criteria to be used in the optimization of drawpoint loading in block caving.

ABSTRACT: The Berg Bock Freeway Tunnel represents the southernmost link of the "Thuringian tunnel chain" of the new freeway A71 located in the eastern part of Germany. It comprises two tubes each 2700 m in length. From north to south, it passes through the Suhl granite, the base sediments and the porphyrite of the New Red as well as the layers of the Middle Bunter. The two tunnel tubes were driven by the shotcrete method within appr. 10 months. With four tunnel faces, maximum performances totalling appr. 30 m/d were attained. Additional, supplementary demands on the safety conception, resulting from the findings from and the analysis of fire accidents in tunnels in recent years, had to be fulfilled in the execution planning at short notice. The inner lining is largely constructed using non-reinforced concrete. Reinforcement is only installed in the portal zones, in tunnel sections in less stable rock and in areas with a special cross-section as for instance cross connections and niches. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Der Autobahntunnel Berg Bock stellt das südlichste Glied der "Thüringer Tunnelkette" auf der Autobahn A71 dar, die im Osten von Deutschland liegt. Er besteht aus zwei Röhren von je 2700 m Länge. Vom Norden nach Süden durchörtert er den Suhler Granit, die Basissedimente und den Porphyrit des Rotliegenden, sowie die Schichten des Mittleren Buntsandsteins. Die beiden Tunnelröhren wurden in Spritzbetonbauweise in einer Bauzeit von etwa zehn Monaten aufgefahren. An vier Vortriebsorten wurden Spitzenleistungen von insgesamt etwa 30 m/d erzielt. Ergänzende Anforderungen an das Sicherheitskonzept, die sich auf der Grundlage der Auswertung der in den letzten Jahren aufgetretenen Brandunfälle in Tunneln ergeben haben, wurden im Rahmen der Ausführungsplanung kurzfristig berücksichtigt. Die Tunnelinnenschale wurde weitgehend aus nicht bewehrtem Beton hergestellt. Nur in den Portalzonen, in Tunnelabschnitten mit weniger standsicherem Fels und in Bereichen mit speziellen Querschnitten, wie beispielsweise im Bereich von Querstollen und Nischen, wurde bewehrter Beton ausgeführt. RÉSUMÉ: Le tunnel d'autoroute de Berg Bock représente le plus méridional maillon de la "chaîne thuringienne de tunnels" sur l'autoroute A71 dans l'est de l'Allemagne. Il se compose de deux tubes d'une longueur de 2700 m chacun. Du nord vers le sud, il traverse le granit de Suhl, les sédiments de base et le porphyrite du Rotliegendes, aussi que les strates du grès bigarré intermédiaire. Les deux tubes étaient creusés en méthode de construction de béton projeté dans une période de construction d'environ dix mois. À quatre fronts de taille rendements maximaux collectifs d'environ 30 m par jour étaient obtenus. On a eu égard à court terme dans la conception d'exécution à des demandes supplémentaires vers la conception de sécurité, qui ont résulté sur la base de l'interprétation des accidents d'incendie dans des tunnels dans les années dernières. La paroi intérieure était construite largement de béton non armé.

The reprocessing of tailings resources to extract gold on an industrial scale has become common practice. While these projects are common in the Witwatersrand basin, similar low-technology processes are not operational in smaller goldfields. This study explores the possibility of reclaiming the tailings dump of the Louis Moore Mine in the Giyani Greenstone Belt, investigates potential hazards to communities in the vicinity, and identifies mitigation strategies. Auger samples were taken from the Louis Moore tailings at depths of up to 5 m. Aqua regia leach analyses show Au concentrations of up to 1 g/t. Inferred estimations based on ordinary kriging (OK) and inverse distance weighted (IDW) methods put the residual Au resource in the Louis Moore tailings dump at 0.20 t. Reworking the tailings is viable, although a potential environmental risk exists in the form of elevated arsenic concentrations. Further exploration is required to determine the mineralogical associations of Au and As. Tailings reworking would assist in raising funds for mine rehabilitation. The secondary tailings could potentially be repurposed, which would provide employment and facilitate community development, as well as deliver environmental benefits.

A research project was carried out on a gold mine in the Vaal River region of South Africa (Witwatersrand Basin) to evaluate the effect of two particular aspects of rockbolt installation – the angle of inclination of the bolt relative to the orientation of the rock surface, and the protruding length of the bolt – on the mine’s gully support system. A keyblock analysis approach indicated that these factors do not have an adverse impact on the stability of the strike gullies. This was confirmed by extensive empirical data collected from the case study mine. While safety is the primary concern, cost saving opportunities can be realized through reconsidering historically inherited support standards that are perceived to be correct and appropriate. The research described in this paper sets forth a practical approach, that is easy to implement and repeatable, to evaluate the role of rockbolts in stoping gullies.

The objective of this paper is to share the optimisation journey of a pilot Reflux classifier (RC) circuit in the Exxaro GG1 plant, at Grootegeluk beneficiation complex in Lephalale, South Africa. The RC circuit was commissioned in 2016 to produce semi-soft coking coal at its fines circuit; however the stability of operation as well as the quality control of the coal product was not fully achieved. Various test campaigns and optimisation studies were conducted to understand and optimise the RC circuit at GG1. The studies revealed circuit design inefficiencies; provided an improved technical understanding of the current pilot circuit and the parameters required for the circuit to reach a stable operation. The operation was stabilised with its current inefficiencies to produce an average 12.5% ash semi-soft coking coal product for sustained periods, above the initial target of 10.3% ash. The research described considers whether the variability in coal material strength, as derived through a series of uniaxial compressive strength (UCS) tests, could be used to indicate the variability in coal pillar strength. The aim is to be able to use a distribution of UCS tests as input into the coal pillar strength calculation. This will allow the pillar design to be expressed in terms of a probability of failure rather than as the commonly used safety factor. To achieve this, the bulk strength factor associated with commonly used pillar strength formulae was replaced with a distribution of UCS results divided by an adjustment factor. The factor was determined so as to ensure that the resulting bulk strength does not deviate from the statistically determined bulk strength published in the original formulae. This approach enabled pillar strength distributions to be obtained using industry-accepted strength formulae, subsequently allowing for a probability of failure to be calculated for a specific pillar design. Using a regional coal material strength curve as a baseline, coalfields in which the coal is stronger than the regional mean can be identified and the pillar designs optimized. This is based on the stronger coals achieving lower probabilities of failure at similar safety factors. The research has considered actual UCS data from multiple mines in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa, and has proved that the variability in material strength between coalfields could allow for some optimization using the proposed approach. Based on the data used in the study, a 2.78% increase in extraction could be achieved. However, further research will be required to validate the results of the study in an underground environment.

Energy & Densification Systems (EDS) has developed patented new technology crushing/milling equipment. The EDS Multishaft Mill is a compact vertical mill – utilising high-speed impacts to break down particles with large reduction ratios, low energy consumption and improved liberation. The milling action combines several processes to provide a multitude of output products to satisfy various specifications. Comminution often accounts for more than 60% of the total power consumption on a mine. Two of the key problems to be solved in comminution is to bring down the specific energy required to reduce particle sizes; and to improve liberation or improve the efficiency of the beneficiation and recovery of the required elements. The EDS Mill has shown extensive improvements in both these areas with energy efficiencies up to 75% better than conventional milling equipment and improving liberation beyond the standard beneficiation processes. Conventional comminution equipment requires massive, heavy parts to be moved or rotated, consuming a lot of energy in doing so and not inputting that energy into the breakage of particles. In the EDS Mill, ramping up the relatively small shafts to speed is all that is required. Once at speed, the momentum, together with the minimal amount of constant drive required, means that the energy can be transmitted directly and efficiently into breaking down the particles. The high-speed impacts allow for a shattering effect of the particles and this quickly generates a high ratio of fines. Furthermore, the single impact force breaks particles in a very different manner to conventional compressive force breakage. With compressive force breakage, the particle breaks from point to point. With high-speed impact force breakage, the force tends to migrate through the weakest areas of the particle, which tend to be the mineral boundaries. This, therefore, means that when the particles break, the various minerals are exposed and hence liberated. Keywords: Comminution, high-speed impact, liberation, energy efficiency, novel comminution
